“We genuinely hope AFSCME leadership will choose not to strike against taxpayers and work with us on implementing common-sense proposals like overtime after 40

hours, not 37.5,” Rauner’s General Counsel Dennis Murashko said in a statement released Tuesday morning. “However, we must be prepared to continue government operations

and provide services that citizens deserve and expect.”

AFSCME has not responded to the website launch as of last Tuesday morning.

Future leaders attend Student Government Day

On February 24, Bensenville students participated in the annual Student Government Day Program held by the Village of Bensenville, along with other village taxing bodies. The program was established in 1990 with the intention of stimulating interest in civic engagement and developing the leadership skills of local students. Students were assigned to certain taxing bodies, and then, were introduced to the basic structure and operations of that local government in the Bensenville community. Following the program, students have the opportunity to attend a board meeting for the taxing body they represented and can watch and participate in the decisionmaking processes of the real local elected officials. Since the program was established, over 1,100 students, ranging from 7th to 12th grade, have participated.

BY ILLINOIS NEWS NETWORK Gov. Bruce Rauner took a big step toward preparing for a labor strike, launching a website seeking potential replacement workers if AFSCME decides to strike.

The site, statejobs.illinois.gov, allows visitors to submit basic personal and contact information and includes a dropdown menu of specific jobs that they might be interested in doing.

“You have reached Working for a Better Illinois,” a message at the top of the website reads. “This website allows citizens of Illinois who are interested in working for the State to provide their contact information, along with the type of work and location where they would like to work. In the event of a labor strike, the State will use this information to match citizens’ interests with the State’s needs.”

AFSCME, the state’s largest public employee union with about 38,000 members, voted last weeks to authorize its leaders to strike if they can’t agree to a new contract with Rauner.

The vote doesn’t guarantee a strike, but it gives union leaders the ability to call one if they see fit. The union’s executive director, Roberta Lynch, has said she is hopeful that the union and Rauner will resume negotiations.

AFSCME has been without a contract since July 2015. In November, an arbitrator awarded Rauner the ability to implement his “last, best, and final offer,” but AFSCME has been challenging that ruling in court.

The union is seeking salary increases and other benefits that would cost Illinois taxpayers more than $3 billion over the life of a new fouryear contract. Rauner’s final offer includes a salary freeze for workers, who are the highest paid in the U.S.

ed the clippers. The third such fundraiser hosted by Mazzie proved to be another success, with more than $1,500 being raised for St. Baldrick’s Foundation.

This year there was a twist: Mazzie himself went under the clippers! A fellow barber from his shop did the honors and Mazzie joined Jackson, Davide and several others in showing off their newly-clean shaven pates- and their huge hearts!

College been so strong,” Daniels told the group of about 125 people from all walks of life in the community who were invited. “We are so proud of the spirit of community and all it represents.”

The Elmhurst Jazz Combo performed briefly at the beginning of the program to the delight of all the guests. Desiree Chen, Senior Director of Communications and External Relations for Elmhurst College, showed a newly-created video that offered the latest information about the college, its classes, students, faculty, programs and activities, and its current financial status. The college currently has about 3,300 students and offers 61 majors, 17 graduate programs and 100 organizations, teams and clubs.

Dr. VanAken began his comments noting that although he’s only been in his position officially since July 1, it was about a year ago at this time that he and Annette flew here to look over the campus — in the cold and snow. But the weather did not keep them away.

“It feels like home,” he said.

“Annette and I are both here because we feel it is our calling in life to get involved with young people at this very important time in their lives. We want students to live their best-possible life in the future. And the best possible life always begins with a good education.”

After calling attention to ELSA, the college’s Elmhurst Learning and Success Academy, which serves 42 people, another short video was shown, this time from the parents of a young lady receiving her acceptance letter to attend ELSA classes. It was a heart-warming scene, watching her jump up

The President went on to other community endeavors such as the upcoming recycling event, the lecture series and other cultural events, the Center for Professional Excellence, which currently has an endowment fund of $2.25 million, and many others. He also looks forward to the college playing an active role in hosting next summer’s Cycling Classic.

In pointing out some exceptional accomplishments by students and faculty at Elmhurst, he said one professor had been named a Fulbright Scholar and will be spending four months in India. He talked about Glenn British, an All-American middle linebacker who was attending the NFL-NFCA Coaches Academy. There are two students who are currently finalists for the Fulbright Scholarship as well.

was looking forward to celebrating the school’s 150th anniversary, its Sesqui-centennial. They are currently planning for it during 201718, then will implement the plan in 2018-2020 and the Sesquicentennial year is 2021.

Following the President’s address, Elmhurst Mayor Steve Morley was invited to the podium to reflect on the past year with the VanAkens coming to Elmhurst College and into the community.

“What I really noticed was that these people [the VanAkens] are all about the student,” Morley said.

“If he’s not in his office, he’s likely out mingling with the students on campus. He has infectious enthusiasm and is a prodigious fundraiser as well.”

It was noted that after receiving $2.8 million in gifts and pledges for FY16, there is already $6.1 million so far in 2017 Year-ToDate.

“It’s easier to sell something if you believe in your product and Dr. Troy VanAken does just that,” Morley said. “The College is truly a jewel in the crown that is Elmhurst.”

Conroy’s organ donation bill gets closer to passage Marking one step closer to saving more lives by expanding organ donation registry access to 16 and 17 year olds, State Rep. Deb Conroy, D-Villa Park, passed House Bill 1805 out of a House committee last week.

“Every year in Illinois, 300 people die waiting for an organ. The wait for a kidney in this state is 5 to 7 years,”

Conroy said. “So many families, including my own, understand the reality of these statistics when a loved one needs a lifesaving organ, a gift of life.”

In Illinois, there are over 5,000 people waiting for a lifesaving or-

gan transplant. However, only half of the eligible adults in the country are registered organ donors. House Bill 1805 allows 16 and 17 year olds the opportunity to add their name to the registry when they apply for an Illinois driver’s license or state iden-

While serving as chair of The Chicago Community Trust’s executive committee, Mr. McCormick partnered with local civic leader Mary Eleanor Wall and others in 1986 to create DF, a 501 (c)(3) public charity focused on raising the quality of life throughout DuPage County through its grant-making, special initiatives, and charitable services to donors.

More than 30 years later, DF has grown to more than $65 million in assets and granted nearly $30 million on behalf of DuPage County residents and the causes that matter most to them.

Mr. McCormick served as a member of DF’s Board until 1992 and remained one of our strongest benefactors until his passing in 2006.

Notably, DF was not the only local charity that Mr. McCormick helped create. In 1972, he was a founding member of the Forest Foundation of DuPage, which later became The Conservation Foundation (TCF).

Today, with the support of more than 4,000 members and 500 volunteers, TCF preserves and restores open space and natural lands, protects rivers and watersheds, and promotes stewardship of our environment in DuPage and other nearby counties.

It is fitting that as we celebrate Mr. McCormick’s birthday, DF and TCF are strengthening their relationship.

This month TCF will establish an agency fund at DF to support TCF’s long-term goals. We think Mr. McCormick would be pleased.

District 4 celebrates 20th anniversary of ‘Read Across America’ This week, volunteers from DeVry University helped students at Army Trail, Lake Park, and Wesley Schools celebrate the 20th anniversary of Read Across America on Thursday, March 2. As part of the DeVry Education Group’s goal of reading to 10,000 students, local volunteers visited 20 District 4 classrooms, reading favorite Dr. Seuss books to 400 stu-

dents. When they were finished, the volunteers distributed stickers to the kids and donated the books they read to the classrooms they visited.

Montini Catholic celebrates annual Mother Son Brunch It was a very special Sunday on February 5 as mothers and sons spent the morning together at Montini Catholic’s annual Mother Son Brunch held at the Drury Lane in Oakbrook Terrace. The brunch has become a much cherished tradition at the Lasallian high school and is held to honor Montini’s mothers while thanking them for their influence in their sons’ lives as they navigate through the many victories and challenges of high school.

As with each year, the morning began with a special Mass celebrating the mother/son relationship. Seniors presented their mothers with a special rose in commemoration of their last year as high school students.

“This event is always a great opportunity for our mothers and sons to spend quality time together,” said President Jim Segredo.

“It is also a great opportunity for mothers to meet each other, share stories and perhaps

build new and lasting relationships with one another.”

“The mother/son brunch is the most lovely of events sponsored by Montini,” said Gail Casey, of Villa Park, who attended with son, Liam (sophomore).

“I have attended with both of my sons in different years, and the experiences were just as memorable each time - you always find yourself among friends.”

Addison Trail boys basketball team reaches regional title game Blazers defeat Willowbrook in regional semifinals

The Addison Trail boys basketball team engineered a strong playoff run recently.

The Blazers advanced to the Class 4A Batavia regional championship where it lost 71-51 to Naperville North.

Addison Trail was the No. 12 seed in the Hinsdale Central sectional.

Naperville North was the No. 4 seed in the sectional.

Addison Trail advanced to the finals after defeating District 88 neighbor Willowbrook in the regional semifinals at Batavia. Willowbrook was the No. 5 seed in the sectional.

Addison Trail had lost twice to

Willowbrook earlier in the season by scores of 74-51 and 50-38.

The Blazers opened the postseason with a 50-43 win over Waubonsie Valley in a Batavia regional quarterfinal game.

Addison Trail finished the season 18-12 and played in its first regional championship game since 2001.

The Willowbrook boys basketball team was upset by District 88 neighbor Addison Trail in the semifinals of the Class 4A Batavia regional.

Willowbrook came into the regional as the No. 5 seed in the Hinsdale Central sectional. Addison Trail was the No. 12 seed. The Blazers defeated the Warriors by an 81-67 count.

Willowbrook had beaten Addison Trail twice during the West Suburban Conference Gold Division portion of the season by scores of 74-51 and 50-38.

Willowbrook, which set a program record for wins in a season, finished the year 24-5 overall and shared the WSC Gold title with two other teams. The Warriors lost their last three games of the season.

Willowbrook advances two in 3-point contest Two Willowbrook boys basketball players will continue their seasons in the Class 4A state 3-point shooting contest.

Sikander Zafar and Matas Masys both advanced out of the Class 4A Batavia regional and will shoot at the Class 4A Hinsdale Central sectional this week for an opportunity to qualify for the Class 4A state finals in Peoria at Carver Arena.

Willowbrook baseball A pair of Willowbrook baseball players announced their college plans recently. Senior Ben Espinoza is headed to the University of Wisconsin-Plateville.

Amari Benbow named all-conference for Fenton girls basketball team Wilson competes in state 3-point shooting finals

A pair of Fenton girls basketball players received some good news at the tail-end of the season.

Amari Benbow was named to the all-Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division team after a strong season.

“Amari led us in scoring, rebounds and steals,” said Fenton coach Tim Anderson. “She had a great year. As the season went on she kept getting better and better. We’re real excited about her continued improvement next year. She was very difficult for people to guard.”

Krysta Wilson finished her senior season at the Class 4A three-point shooting finals at Illinois State University in Normal. Wilson made seven 3-pointers and did not advance out of her preliminary pool.

“Krysta did fine downstate,” said Anderson. “She looked good out there and didn’t look nervous. That’s a tough thing down there. You have 32 girls shooting and you have to be in the top four to advance. It was a great experience for her. She was our leading 3-point shooter this year. It was fitting for her.”

Fenton wrapped up its season with

a playoff loss to Addison Trail by a 64-30 count.

“That was an interesting game,” said Anderson. “We played probably our best quarter of the year. We were up 18-14 after the first quarter.

We came out blazing. But we didn’t shoot well the rest of the way. It got away from us in the second half. I was happy with how the girls came out. They weren’t nervous and they looked so good in that first quarter.

We couldn’t sustain. Addison Trail was the better team that night.”

Overall, Anderson saw plenty of positives over the course of the long season.

“We had an exciting season,” he said. “It was a very rewarding season. I’m very proud of our girls. We have a lot of them coming back next season, which is a good sign. These girls stuck together the whole season and that’s something that stands out.

I’m there with them every day and watching their progress. I couldn’t be more proud of them. They are a great group of kids.”

Anderson noted a particular change in the team’s progress around December.

“The first few games of the season wasn’t what we were expecting,” the coach said. “And then before Christmas the light went on. If you look at the grand total of what’s going on and where we were at the beginning of December to where we were at

Wilson, Jenny Sanchez and Patty Acosta are the three seniors on the team.

“Those three young ladies showed some great leadership that is very much appreciated,” said Anderson.

“We tell them life is full of challenges and it’s what you do about those challenges that matters. Those three girls are exceptional models of how to approach challenges. They are great.”

The Fenton boys basketball team saw its season come to a conclusion after a 59-55 loss to Chicago Prosser in the quarterfinals of the Class 4A Fenton regional in Bensenville.

Oak Park-River Forest went on to win the Fenton regional with a 69-56 victory over Chicago St. Patrick.

Fenton was the No. 18 seed in the Class 4A Proviso East sectional.

IC Catholic Prep boys basketball team loses in sectionals

Knights enjoy another outstanding season; Sutton headed to state 3-point shooting finals

The IC Catholic Prep boys basketball team ran into a tough Chicago Orr team and dropped a 66-44 decision in the semifinals of the recent Class 2A Guerin Prep sectional in River Grove.

Orr went on to defeat Chicago DePaul Prep for the sectional title and played in the Class 2A Joliet Central supersectional earlier this week for a chance to compete in the Class 2A state semifinals this weekend in Peoria.

“Orr is extremely athletic and had several guys who could jump out of the gym,” said IC Catholic Prep coach TJ Tyrrell. “They are a very physical and aggressive team with their pressure and traps. They have the firepower inside and out.

My guess is they will be the Class 2A state champions before this is all finished. We started out a little slow against them and had several opportunities to keep it close. We didn’t hit some shots early on and had some unforced turnovers that led to momentum going in Orr’s favor. The closest we got was 14 in the second half.”

Tyrrell noted Luke Ricobene, Matt Sutton and Amari Reed all had strong games against Orr. “Luke, Matt and Amari really battled against Orr,” he said. “Things are very encouraging for us next year.

We graduate only three seniors and four of our starters are juniors this year.”

Tyrrell thanked Sutton, Tony Gaudio and Galvin Gecsey for their contributions as senior leaders.

“We owe them a big thank-you,” he said.

The Knights finished the season 21-8 overall. IC Catholic Prep won

the Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division title for the first time in that setup and won their third league title in five years. IC Catholic Prep also won its second Class 2A regional title in the last four years.

IC Catholic Prep’s sophomore team finished 17-7 overall, while the freshman squad was 18-9.

“The future is bright,” said Tyrrell. “The program is healthy and I’m very encouraged moving forward.”

Alex Meurer, Kevin Cheng and Reed earned all-MSC Blue hon-

ors—all three are juniors.

“Alex really stepped up for us down the stretch,” the coach pointed out. “He came into his own. In those close games he was in there getting rebounds and doing all the little things we needed to win.”

IC Catholic Prep also won the Coal City tournament this season.

“We had a very good year,” said Tyrrell.

Against Orr, Ricobene had 13 points, while Reed added 12 points.

Sutton finished with 10 points.

“This is absolutely the toughest Class 2A sectional in the state,” said Tyrrell. “Chicago Uplift lost

to Orr and those teams were first or second in the Class 2A state rankings. It’s how it works out. I had a feeling with us hosting regionals that we would head toward the city this year. It was a great experience for us. Overall, this year was great and I’m thankful for the opportunity to coach these boys and be part of this program.”

Sutton’s season will continue later this week in Peoria. He was one of four competitors at Guerin who advanced to the state finals of the Class 2A three-point shooting contest. Sutton will shoot at Carver Arena in Peoria.

Andrew Perun, 7th grade student at Holy Family Catholic School in Bensenville, has been notified by the National Geographic Society that he is one of the semifinalists eligible to compete in the 2017 Illinois National Geographic State Bee. The contest will be held at at the Braden Auditorium,on the campus of Illinois State University on Friday, March 31.

This is the second level of the National Geographic Bee competition, which is now in its 29th year. School Bees were held in schools with fourth through eighth-grade students throughout the state to determine each school champion. School champions then took a qualifying test, which they submitted to the National Geographic Society. The National Geographic Society has invited up to 100 of the top-scoring students in each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Department of Defense Dependents Schools and U.S. territories to compete in the State Bees.

Each state champion will receive $100, the National Geographic Concise Atlas of the World, 4th Edition and a trip to Washington, D.C., to represent their state in the National Geographic Bee Championship to be held at National Geographic Society headquarters, May 14-17.

The national champion will receive a $50,000 college scholarship, a lifetime membership in the Society, including a subscription to National Geographic magazine, and an all expenses paid Lindblad expedition to the Galápagos Islands aboard the new National Geographic Endeavour ll. The Elmhurst College Governmental Forum is one of the region’s most widely respected venues for the discussion of the vital economic and governance issues facing Illinois. John Cullerton In previous years, the Forum has welcomed Zachary Fardon, U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Illinois; former Illinois governors Jim Edgar and James Thompson; former U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk; Business Roundtable President John Engler; Speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives Michael J. Madigan and many others.

The Forum will be held on Friday, March 31, at the Drury Lane Conference Center, 100 Drury Lane, in Oakbrook Terrace, Ill. The Forum begins with networking at 11:30 a.m.; lunch and the program begin at 12 noon. Admission is $25 and includes lunch. The public is invited to attend.
