Transparency group finds pay spiking practices continue to cost taxpayers in Illinois A new report of Illinois public employee pay by government transparency advocate Open the Books shows 144 local government employees in the state making more than $190,000, out-earning every governor.

This is according to records they received from the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund. Some got raises of more than double their salaries from the previous year of work.

“This is purely and simply public employee greed,” Open the Books CEO Adam Andrzejewski said. “Our report shows citizens better start paying attention locally.”

One of the notable public salaries Open the Books found in the IMRF disclosure was Robert Henderson, a cable TV producer for Niles Township High School District 219. In 2016, he was paid $102,766. In 2017, he received $220,542.

Jim Szczepaniak, District 219 Director of Community Relations, said the reason for Henderson’s boost in pay last year was a settlement over unpaid overtime from 2014-15 to the tune of $102,905.05. His base pay is $94,203.20.

In the private sector, the median wage for a producer or director is $70,950, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

Niles Township District 219 will get $2.6 million in state funds in the current fiscal year. The district’s annual budget is $150 million, largely funded by local property taxes.

The district’s contribution to IMRF was $9,924 for Henderson in 2017, according to Andrzejewski’s data.

State law requires Illinois Munic-

ipal Retirement Fund contributions to be paid in full by the municipality, given precedent over basic daily operations.

Andrzejewski said those pay hikes are the responsibility of all Illinoisans because the cities get state money.

“They all receive a portion of the state income tax through the [Local Government Distributive Fund],” he said. “That means all of us across the entire state are helping fund these excessive pay packages.”

Some of the pay spikes resulted from employees logging tens of thousands of dollars in overtime. DuPage County Sheriff’s Deputy Steven Flanagan has a base pay of $163,844.43 but logged a countywide high of $95,719.53 in overtime, bringing his total pay to more than $259,563.96 last year. This is according to the county’s ledger.

DuPage County Circuit Clerk Chief Deputy Dewey Hartman saw a pay increase of $160,000 in 2017, bringing his salary to nearly $325,000. This was the highest pay spike that Andrzejewski’s group found.

The clerk’s office representative, John Larson, said the pay spike was because Hartman is retiring after more than 30 years with the county.

His 2017 pay included a retention bonus as well as cash value for his sick and vacation days.

He cashed out that pay last year to allow that extra money to apply to his IMRF pension, according to Larson.

Any increases in pay in the final three months of employment do not apply to the IMRF retirement rate.

Larson’s last day with the county is March 31.

For the first time in about a decade, identity theft topped the list of consumer complaints filed to the Illinois Attorney General’s office in 2017.

Attorney General Lisa Madigan said she thinks a major national breach might have been the cause for the surge in complaints.

“I think one of the main reasons for that was the really massive Equifax breach that impacted nearly 150 million people across the United States,” Madigan said.

Madigan said more than 2,500 residents filed complaints in 2017.

She said most identity thefts involved unauthorized usage of credit cards through cyber attacks, but also could be people the victim knows.

“The best thing that you can do to protect yourself from identity theft, it would be to put a credit freeze on your credit report; and there are three major credit reporting bureaus in this country,” Madigan said.

Madigan also suggested getting a free credit report, which each American is entitled to, and staggering them to once every four months with the major credit bureaus.

Montini Catholic students visit Chinatown

Montini Catholic students took a very informative field trip to Chinatown on Thursday, March 1. Chinese II, III and IV students, along with teacher Sussy Xu, visited Nine Dragon Wall, Chinatown Gate, Chinatown Mural and Chinatown Zodiac Plaza on their journey.

“We also had some very good and tasty food at Minghin Cuisine,” said Mrs. Xu. “I could write a novel on that day alone,” said junior Shea Slaten, a Chinese II student. “It was actually a lot of fun. We went shopping, I bought this really beautiful silk Chinese-style dress, snapped a chopstick in three when I tried to put my hair up with it!

“There’s so much to do there. It was a great opportunity to embrace my culture and appreciate it while I learn the language.”

The Daley family legacy runs deep in Illinois, Chicago

About 20 years before a certain territory along the eastern banks of the upper Mississippi became a state, a man named Maurice Daly tied his donkey and cart to a fence in the little Irish town of Dungarvan and set off for America. He added an “e” to his last name along the way—and the die was cast for the most powerful political brand in Illinois’ 200-year history.

The Daleys of Chicago ran the state’s largest city for more than 40 years, watching from the fifth floor of City Hall as the city grew from a thriving but unpolished Midwest railroad hub to a sprawling global metropolis.

Whether it’s the skyscrapers that Richard J. Daley so dearly loved, or the wrought-iron fences and European-style greenery pushed by his son, the legacy of the city’s two longest-serving mayors is impossible to avoid.

There are also things not seen, of course. Like Meigs Field, the quirky lakefront airport that the younger Daley brazenly—and illegally—bulldozed in the middle of the night in 2003. And then there’s a trail of Daley pals either shamed or jailed for various corruption schemes, part of a long-tolerated, wink-and-nod “Chicago way” of doing city business.

The elder Mayor Daley struggled to reconcile his neighborhood tribalism with the growing civil rights movement and anti-war protests.

And his son watched grand plans for his city spiral into sweetheart deals and crippling budget deficits.

But the Daley Machine also saw Chicago’s fortunes grow while other Rust Belt cities declined. And they helped elect two Democratic presidents while wielding the kind of statewide clout in Springfield that a small army of Machine-bred representatives and senators can make possible.

Richard J. Daley, great-grandson of Maurice, was born in the city’s

Bridgeport neighborhood in 1902, not far from where he lived when he died 74 years later. He rose through the ranks of Democratic politics by building a reputation as both an oldschool ward heeler and nimble numbers cruncher. Lacking the oratorical flourish of so many politicians of the day, he prided himself on getting things done.

“Good government is good politics,” he liked to say. And he correctly surmised that few would mind if city payrolls were stocked with Daley Machine foot soldiers, so long as the trash got collected and the streets got plowed.

When he arrived at his desk in City Hall every morning, he was greeted with a list of the names of new city workers, along with their political sponsors. His ride home in the evening often took a wandering path, stopping at various wakes and retirement parties, each visit cementing that particular family’s multi-generational allegiance to the Democratic Party.

While the husband was running the city, his beloved wife, Sis, was raising a growing brood of seven children. Little Richie, the first-born son, came along in 1942. Then came Michael, a prominent lawyer and the only son who stayed away from politics (unless, ahem, you count helping clients win city zoning cases political). Then there was John, a former state senator and state representative who is still a Cook County Commissioner. He is also the 11th Ward Democratic Committeeman, a job that has been in the Daley family since the 1940s.

William Daley, the youngest son, is the only one to have officially stepped onto the national political stage, serving as both U.S. commerce secretary under President Bill Clinton, and White House chief of staff under President Barack Obama.

In 2013, Daley briefly ran for Illinois governor, only to drop out of the race a few months after entering it, citing personal reasons.

But it was Richard M. Daley who made the family name synonymous with big city clout, eclipsing even his father’s run on the fifth floor.

Addison March 20 Zitlali Chavarria, 19, of Addison, was charged with unlawful possession of cannabis and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia near Myrick and Alden at around 9 p.m.

Luis E. Kevin Beirne named new principal Area Catholic schools present ‘You’re A Good of Montini Catholic High School Montini Catholic High School in Lombard is announcing Kevin Beirne as their new Principal beginning with the 2018-19 school year. Beirne is replacing Maryann O’Neill who announced her retirement earlier this year after 32 years at the school, fourteen of which she served as principal of the Lasallian college preparatory high school.

Beirne joined the Montini Catholic family in 2008 as an English instructor. From there he was promoted to the Director of Digital Learning Initiative and was instrumental in rolling out the school’s 1-to-1 iPad program in 2014. In 2015 he became Assistant Principal for Student Services, taking over the role vacated by Kathy Filipiak.

As Assistant Principal, Beirne currently works side by side with Montini’s Guidance Department and Deans Office to ensure that the academic and behavioral needs of the students are met. He also works with Assistant Principal of Academics, Sara Lhotka and Principal O’Neill to ensure that Montini Catholic holds itself to the highest standards in their mission to educate the whole child - “heart, soul, mind and body.”

Beirne will become Montini Catholic’s 9th Principal since the school’s inception in 1966.

‘Austin Otto’ character visits District 4 music classrooms Austin Otto, a character from the Quaver Music curriculum used in District 4’s elementary general music classes, visited Fullerton and Lake Park schools on Tuesday morning, March 20, to sing and play music with students.

Otto Gross II is a musician who plays the Austin Otto character in the online lessons. He has an impressive

resume, having toured internationally with musicians including Bobby McFerrin and Branford and Wynton Marsalis, but the fact that Mr. Austin Otto was visiting their school in person is what was really important to the students. He captivated the classes, playing instruments, singing, and leading the students in a variety of rhythmic exercises.

McTeacher’s Night held for Holy Family Catholic School Holy Family Catholic School held their annual McTeacher’s Night Fundraiser at the Elmhurst McDonald’s on York Rd. A McTeacher’s Night is organized to help raise money for local schools by having teachers work at McDonald’s and then giving a percentage of the night’s sales back to the local school. What a great night for Holy Family Catholic School.

On Monday, March 19, the restaurant was taken over by Holy Family teachers and Principal Kelly excited to serve freshly prepared meals to students and their families. Teachers handed out orders, made ice cream treats, served drinks, and sold cookies.

The funds earned from the cookie sales and the night’s sales from the

families will go directly into a general fund to support items needed for the school.

A special thank you goes to parent Griselda Kaiser, who organized the event as well as everyone who worked and attended.

District 4 kindergarten registration continues The final registration event for Addison School District 4’s 2018-19 Kindergarten Registration will be held at Army Trail School, 346 Army Trail Blvd., on Wednesday, April 4 from 4-7 p.m. This is the time to register children who will be five years old on or before September 1, 2018.

Parents are encouraged to pick up a registration packet in advance so they will have time to gather all necessary documents and complete the required paperwork before coming to register their child. Registration packets are available at the District Office, 222 N. Kennedy Drive (Door 18), at each of the school offices, and on the District website at asd4.org.

Parents must register in person.

All kindergarten classes in ASD4 are full-day classes.

Addison Trail boys track team making progress New coach Ziebka lauds athletes’ hard work and willingness to learn

New Addison Trail boys track coach James Ziebka has seen his team progress despite the usual challenges associated with the season starting in the middle of the winter sports season.

“To this point, we have had mixed results,” he said. “The indoor season begins before basketball, wrestling and hockey wrap up so we had some of our key student-athletes get a late start in track and field. We also had a number of athletes in the winter play and in Science Olympiad. So once the outdoor season begins, it

will only be a matter of time before we reach our full potential. I know our student-athletes are anxious to get off the 160-meter track and transition to the 400-meter track.”

Ziebka highlighted a number of strong improvements he’s seen so far, including those of Alvaro Garza, Lukas Rodriguez and Quincy Gunnerson. “Alvaro is our most consistent runner on varsity and brings an outstanding work ethic and attitude to practice every day,” he said. “Lukas is such a competitor. He has a great attitude and keeps things loose in practice. Quincy is only a sophomore. He has demon-

strated incredible gains since his freshman year. His athleticism and his attitude to try new events have been awesome.”

Ziebka likes the fact his athletes are willing to do whatever is best for the team. “Many of our guys are trying new events, wanting extra reps and in some cases working with teammates after practice has ended.”

Fenton boys volleyball team looks to take next step Hill, Bajo lead list of returning Bison players

Sports teams with strong chemistry tend to produce positive results.

Fenton boys volleyball coach Heather Petersen is excited about that very thing with her 2018 team.

“So far I’ve observed a lot of chemistry, which is a great thing for a team to have,” she said.

Fenton is coming off a 2017 season where it went 16-16. The Bison welcome back senior 6-1 setter Andrew Hill, who had 108 kills and 32 aces last year. Also back is 6-0 senior right side Alfred Bajo, who had 74 kills and 17 blocks.

Adam Gebala, a 6-3 junior middle blocker, is a key newcomer to the team.

“We have more volleyball experience this year,” said Petersen. “We have more club volleyball players than we usually have and that’s helped with the team chemistry component as well.”

Petersen likes the fact Hill has numerous options at his disposal. “We have multiple threats from the outside, middle and right side,” she said.

“We typically don’t have all these options. We can go to all three positions confidently.”

At the same time, Petersen said the team continues to work hard at the defensive part of the puzzle. “Defense is something we need to keep working on,” she said. “It’s an area that’s in progress and it’s something we’re still putting together. We need to adjust our defense based on how the other team’s defense looks. We want to

have a stronger defense by the end of the year.”

Having a player such as Hill leading the way is something Petersen is excited about. “Andrew brings a few things to the table,” she said. “He played club this past year, which has helped him significantly. My personal observation is from freshman to senior year he has matured significantly in terms of being a volleyball player. This is his third year on varsity. He displays a lot more maturity.

He knows what to do with the ball and he’s also an offensive threat in the front row. He can put the ball away.”

Petersen, who is assisted at the varsity level by Rich Wiess, said the team is focused on even bigger things this season. “We are hopeful we can improve our record from last year,” she said. “We feel that with more players with more volleyball experience and playing club we’re hopeful (we will) perform better in tournaments and ideally make a better run in the postseason. We’re going to keep building on our team chemistry. I’m confident if we can do that it will give us the greatest chance at success.”

Fenton started the season with a 1-1 mark. The Bison beat Rich East and lost to Maine East in three sets in a close match.

Fenton played over the weekend in the Oswego tournament.

Addison Trail boys gymnastics team begins season Coach Galfi sees potential in numerous events

Addison Trail boys gymnastics coach Mike Galfi is seeing progress in the early going of the 2018 season.

“Our team is developing quickly on floor and vault this year,” he said.

“We have potential to have multiple gymnasts scoring 8 or above. Our strongest events currently are floor and vault.”

Addison Trail took fourth in the West Suburban Conference Gold

Division last year and returns junior Eric Estrada from that team. Estrada competes on horse, rings, parallel bars and horizontal bar.

Freshman Matt Wojdak is a key newcomer for the Blazers. He competes on floor and vault.

“Matt anchors our floor team with a start value of 10.0,” Galfi explained. “He has scored in the 9s multiple times this year already and is working to improve his forms and landings in a hope to make state finals as a freshman.”

Galfi said both Wodjak and Estrada are two gymnasts to keep an eye on, as well as sophomore Jakub Sitko. “Matt and Eric have strong work ethics and are very dedicated to improving their abilities,”

the coach said. “Jakub is a returning sophomore who has improved greatly from his freshman year. He has hopes of qualifying for state on parallel bars this year.”

Galfi said while the majority of the team is new to the sport, he likes what he sees in the practice gym thus far. “The team this year is, generally speaking, very new to gymnastics,” he said. “There is a tremendous amount of excited energy in the gym each day as these gymnasts learn new skills very quickly. The team is very dedicated and the gymnasts work hard every day in practice.

“Our goal for this season is to develop new skills and try to create routines that hit all the element

groups. We have a young team so we are preparing them to be successful in the coming years.”

it placed ninth with a score of 109.25. In a West Suburban Conference Gold Division meet against District 88 neighbor Willowbrook, the Blazers scored a 118.9.

After a rough start to the season, the IC Catholic Prep baseball team righted the ship in a hurry.

The Knights opened the season with a 15-1 non-conference loss to St. Joseph, which jumped out to a 15-0 lead before IC Catholic Prep scored its only run. The Knights were held to one hit and made four errors.

CJ West pitched 3 1/3 innings and struck out three while throwing 14 first-pitch strikes.

After the St. Joe’s setback, the Knights then ran off three wins. In a 4-2 victory over Chicago Holy Trinity, West had two hits, while Tommy Ryan had a hit and CJ Slowinski had an RBI. Ryan turned in three statistically rated quality at-bats.

Andrew Falduto went the distance for the Knights. He threw 15 firstpitch strikes and fanned 11.

The game was scoreless through four innings before Holy Trinity struck first with two runs in the fifth.

The Knights tied it with a pair in the bottom of the fifth and went ahead for good with a deuce in the sixth.

The Knights had six hits in the game.

The Holy Trinity win was followed by a 5-1 victory over Lisle.

Junior Thomas Hilgart had two hits (including a double), scored a run and had two RBI, while Jake Lytton had one RBI. West was back at it on the mound.

He went the distance, scattering six hits over seven innings. He struck out six and allowed only one earned run, while stranding six Lisle runners on base. He threw 18 first-pitch strikes.

IC Catholic Prep moved to 3-1 with a 10-1 non-conference win over Northridge Prep. The Knights led 2-0 after the second inning, 5-1 after three innings and 9-1 after four innings. IC Catholic Prep had a season-high nine hits.

Falduto was again the winning pitcher. He pitched four innings and struck out four, while throwing 13 first-pitch strikes. He allowed only four hits, one earned run and stranded five Northridge runners. Junior Ryan Malek came in relief and allowed one hit and struck out one.

Malek also starred at the plate where he had two singles, scored two runs, walked once and stole a base.

Senior Griffen Eichhorn had two singles, scored two runs and also stole a base. Falduto had a hit, scored a run and drove in three.

The three wins moved the Knights to 3-2 overall.

IC Catholic Prep is in the midst of its spring trip in Spring Hill, Tennessee this week. The Knights opened the trip against Maine West at Summit High School.

IC Catholic Prep softball The IC Catholic Prep softball team moved to 2-0 on the young season after a 2-0 non-conference win against St. Francis in a game played at Ruby Field in Melrose Park.

The Knights led 2-0 after the second inning and 3-0 after three innings. The Knights added a run in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead, however St. Francis came back with three runs in the seventh. IC Catholic Prep won it with a run in the bottom of the frame.

The Knights had nine hits. Josie Lytton had three triples in the game, while Rebecca Cash had a double and a triple.

Kayla Faber-Cournane was the winning pitcher, moving to 2-0 on the season.

Willowbrook alum named CCIW Pitcher of the Week Willowbrook grad Matt Pizur (2016), now a sophomore at Division III North Park University in Chicago, was named the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Pitcher of the Week recently.

The right-hander earned this honor after tossing a complete game shutout for a 7-0 win over Wisconsin Lutheran on Thursday, March 15. His nine-inning performance for the Vikings featured three strikeouts. Pizur only allowed three hits in the contest: He did not allow any walks during the outing.

Pizur currently carries a team-best 1.78 ERA on the season while opponents are batting just .188 against him.

Mariners Swim Team registration begins Apr. 14 Parks and Recreation is holding Priority Registration for the Mariners Swim Team Saturday, April 14 from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. and Wednesday, April 18 from 6-8 p.m.

Representatives from the Mariners will be on hand both days to answers questions. The Mariners swim competitively in the DuPage Swim and Dive Conference, a group of west suburban swim teams including Wood Dale, Carol Stream and Lombard.

The season includes eleven meets, five on Wednesday evenings and five on Saturday mornings, with a season ending conference meet. Practices are each weekday morning at Jefferson Pool and swimmers are expected to attend each practice.

It is recommended that beginning swimmers have previous swim team experience prior to the start of the season. Swimmers must successfully swim one length of the pool using a legal stroke in order to participate.

Younger swimmers, ages 5-8, can participate as a Mini Mariner and compete in the five home meets. Priority Registration fees are $109 per child; $99 additional children and $75 for Mini Mariners. Registration will NOT be accepted prior to April 14/18 and online registration NOT available.
