Notice to readers of the Bensenville Independent

The Bensenville Independent, the Villa Park Review, the Elmhurst Independent, along with all other newspapers published by Rock Valley Publishing, will continue publishing under the usual schedule in both print and digital formats.

• Implementation of social distancing strategies, such as maintaining physical distance and avoiding physical contact with others.

• Encouraging residents to mail in payments or utilize our online payment options by waiving all fees.

• The Bensenville Theatre will be closed until further notice.

• The Edge Ice Arenas and Waters Edge programing will also be postponed until further notice.

• Scheduling meetings over the phone whenever possible.

• General inquiries can be made by calling Village Hall at (630) 766-8200.

Reminders to take precautions, listen to experts The Village will be following direction from state and local health officials - including regularly cleaning and disinfecting surfaces and equipment in our buildings, encouraging frequent hand-washing amongst staff and patrons, and making CDC COVID-19 informational resources available online.

The Village would like to remind residents of how important it is to know the symptoms of this virus and to take the appropriate steps to staying healthy. You are strongly encouraged to practice social distancing by increasing physical distance from others and

to staying home whenever possible.

Please remember to also disinfect frequently touched surfaces, wash your hands, avoid touching eyes, nose, or mouth, stay home when you are sick, and cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue.

Symptoms of COVID-19 include shortness of breath, cough, and a fever. If you believe you are developing symptoms, you are encouraged to contact your health care provider. Questions about the virus can be addressed by calling the Illinois COVID-19 ho-

The Fenton boys track team participated in a pair of indoor competitions prior to the state-mandated COVID-19-related shutdown.

While Fenton’s first appearance at the Upstate Eight Conference indoor meet did not occur, the Bison did take part in the Joe Scarpino invitational at Buffalo Grove as well as the Glenbrook South relays.

At Buffalo Grove, Fenton was 10th in the Varsity A flight, ninth in the Varsity B flight and ninth in the Varsity C flight.

Andre Bess took seventh in the A 55 dash with a time of 6.86, while Alberto Gomez was ninth in the B flight at 7.21 and Cole Zellers was seventh in the C flight at 7.59.

Ivan Hampton took ninth in the A-flight 200 dash with a time of 30.56. Bess was seventh in the B-flight at 28.50 and Justin Hall was eighth in the C-flight at 29.94.

Ryan Rebolledo was 10th in the 400 run in the A flight. Juan Carlos Sosa was 10th in the B flight at 1:01.60 and Luis Rivera was 10th in the C flight at 1:31.90.

Victor Vazquez, a freshman, was seventh in the 800 run A flight at 2:22.50. Paul Sofineti was seventh in the B flight at 2:42.10 and freshman Estenan Cerna was sixth in the C flight at 2:39.20.

Sanchez played in 73 sets this season and had 87 kills (1.2 per set). He also had nine service aces and 97 digs.

Raton played in 56 sets and had 46 digs to go with three services aces.

Lozada at Robert Morris Former Fenton standout Isa Lozada is a freshman shortstop on the Robert Morris University softball team in Chicago.

Prior to the season being suspended, Lozada had played in 13 games (12 starts) and had four hits to go with three runs scored. Robert Morris was 1-14 at the time of games being halted.

State Rep. Willis encourages workers displaced by COVID-19 to seek government assistance In response to the COVID-19 outbreak which is forcing small businesses, restaurants, bars and other establishments to temporarily close their doors to the public, state Rep. Kathleen Willis, D-Northlake, is highlighting resources available to help businesses and workers secure assistance.

“Small and locally owned and operated businesses are the lifeblood of our community,” Willis said. “The new reality facing these businesses and workers is a devastating blow to our economy, and we are doing everything in our power to facilitate access to assistance in coordination with the federal government.”

Willis is encouraging small businesses impacted by COVID-19 to submit information to the Illinois

Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO), which is working in consultation with the U.S. Small Business Administration to offer financial assistance during this unprecedented public health crisis.

“The situation surrounding the COVID-19 outbreak is fluid, and guidance from local, state, and federal officials and public health experts is changing by the day,” said Willis. “I am committed to pursuing all available options to leverage resources for businesses and workers to withstand the economic impact of this crisis.”

ICC formalizes order to stop utility disconnections and late payment fees

The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) on March 18 in Regular Open Session voted unanimously to formalize Gov. JB Pritzker and the ICC’s request of Illinois electric, natural gas, water and wastewater utilities to cease disconnections and the threat of disconnections during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) public health emergency.

The order also calls on the utilities to suspend late payment fees until May 1, or the crisis has passed, and to implement flexible utility credit and col-

lection procedures to ensure customers remain connected to essential utility services when the emergency status ends.

Each Illinois gas, electric distribution, water, and sewer utility will be required to file proposed revised credit and collections procedures in this proceeding for the commission’s consideration and approval.

County Chief Justice announces limited court operations

DuPage County Chief Judge Daniel P. Guerin issued an Administrative Order effective Tuesday, March 17, rescheduling civil and criminal cases set in the 18th Judicial Circuit set through April 17, 2020 in response to COVID-19. Cases will be continued for a period between 30-60 days from the originally scheduled court date. The Circuit Court Clerk will notify all interested parties via mail of a future court date.

Pursuant to the Administrative Order, all traffic cases are rescheduled, and the following courtrooms are closed through April 17, 2020: Downers Grove Traffic Court, Addison Traffic Court, and Traffic Courtrooms 1001 and 1003 inside the DuPage Courthouse.

The DuPage County Courthouse is open and will conduct business on a limited scale consistent with the Order. Women’s Club of Addison offers scholarships Deadline is April 6

The Women’s Club of Addison will be accepting applications now through April 6, 2020, for two $1,500 scholarships for the 20202021 academic school year.

They will be awarded to female graduating seniors who have been accepted at an accredited two-or four-year college or university.

Candidates may attend any high school, but must be a current resident of Addison.

purge the public sphere of dissent, censoring news reports, harassing citizen journalists and shutting down news sites,” according to the New York Times.

Similar suppression has appeared in other nations, according to the Committee to Protect journalists. In Thailand, the prime minister has threatened to arrest journalists who publish “fake news” about the virus and Iran detained a journalist for posts critical of the government’s response, according to the CPJ. But even a democracy is going to be tempted to manage the messaging, as the U.S. did by initially channeling the government’s comments through a single spokesman: Vice President Mike Pence. That recently has improved significantly.

When the public is desperate for information, government needs to maximize authoritative information from scientists and experts on the public payroll. That appropriately gives Americans what they need to know, and counters irresponsible pundits who have sought to minimize the threat to score political or ratings points.

Most encouraging, though, has been the response of state and local governments, schools and the private sector. Governments at every level resist disclosure and scrutiny, but this has been a refreshing change, with leaders saying: “Here’s what we need to do, here’s why we’re doing it and here’s how you can find out more.”

Sports leagues and private businesses, not known for transparency, have been refreshingly transparent. How many emails have you received

this week that began “Out of an abundance of caution …”?

There are a lot of institutions making tough decisions these days, but they’re largely doing it in partnership with the American people.

More than anything, else, though, this crisis reminds us of how wise the first generation of Americans was in demanding a free press. Despite the inevitable accusations by some that the news media were “hyping” this threat, traditional media have been measured and thorough in their coverage, making the most of their on-air medical and scientific consultants. Closer to home, local newspapers and broadcasters have devoted extensive resources to reporting how the virus will affect the communities they serve.

President Trump told the nation recently that “we are all in this together” and that’s exactly what needs to happen: the government sharing what it knows truthfully and without spin or bravado, private and public institutions engaging constructively with America’s most pressing challenge and news organizations keeping the public informed in a thorough and even-handed way.

In the end, science will prevail in curbing this virus. Yet the path to that victory can only emerge from true collaboration and collective sacrifice, fueled by a shared understanding of exactly what we’re up against. That can only come from the free flow of information.

It may sound counterintuitive to go out to a blood drive, but we are encouraging healthy donors to give blood. Red Cross has put new safety measures in place to protect staff and donors, including checking the temperature of staff and donors before they enter a drive location, providing hand sanitizer throughout the donation process and spacing beds in accordance with social distancing guidelines. All things new for Addison Trail boys volleyball team Girls varsity coach Styler takes over Blazers program

A lot is new this spring for the Addison Trail boys volleyball team.

For starters, the Blazers have a new coach in Dan Styler, who is not exactly new to volleyball at the school. Styler completed his eighth season as girls head coach this past fall and previously coached in the boys program for nine years prior to departing in 2016 to devote more time to his growing family.

And Styler encountered many new faces during the four days of spring practice the Blazers got in before the COVID-19 crisis forced a halt to all activities and eventually school for an indefinite period.

“It’s been an interesting beginning of the season, to say the least,” said Styler. “We only had four days of practice because boys volleyball starts a week later than baseball and softball. We got four in before the plug was pulled.

“Ultimately, we have a lot of new faces, and we have some guys who saw a little playing time last year as well. We have guys back who had partial playing experience, but we don’t have anybody back who was a consistent starter from start to finish.”

Among those who saw action last year under former coach Chad Grant, who left to start the boys program at Glenbard South (where he coaches two other sports), is now sophomore Basile Vassos, who played with the varsity as a freshman last spring.

season with his ball-control and libero skills,” said Styler. “His skills have grown significantly. He’s only a sophomore and he’s done pretty well so far. He still has a lot of room for growth. For his age level, I think he will be a pretty high-impact player by the end of his high school career.”

Styler also is looking for big things from junior outside hitter Patrick Ptasznik, junior middle blocker Filippo Cacucciolo, junior outside hitter Michal Zdanowicz and sophomore defensive specialist-outside hitter Enzo Ciaccia.

“Enzo floated around between positions and has really good ball control,” said Styler.

“He can play outside hitter and DS. He’s a guy we can put in three or four different positions and he will benefit us.

“Filippo is a guy who floated between outside hitter and middle hitter, he’ll more than likely play middle hitter for us. He has really good, explosive jumping capacity. He gets off the ground well for his size because he’s only 5-10. He has really good timing and rhythm. He will be an impact player for us this year.

“Michal has played a little outside and libero. He more than likely will play outside and right side. We’ll take a look at some options with him. He has gotten a lot stronger.”

In the limited time he’s had with the team in spring practice, Styler has been pleased with his players’ learning abilities.

“They are eager to learn, which is something I significantly appreciate. They

Styler noted Addison Trail is farther along on the defensive front right now.

“We will have to start with the brighter strengths defensively,” he said. “We are still evaluating the setting position right now.

Offensively, I am a believer that teams can execute well offensively, but they are only as good offensively as their setter is.

“We will have some inexperience, but I have seen some nice things. We know it will take time with that youthful inexperience.

Sports Athletes, coaches wait to play ball Pandemic brings much of life, including high school sports, to a standstill STAFF REPORT

Like every other high school softball coach in the area, Willowbrook coach Rachel Karos is used to unpredictable schedules.

When your softball season begins in Chicagoland in March, you expect some games and practices to be postponed by rain, snow and freezing temperatures.

You don’t expect a pandemic that closes school buildings and, in addition to wiping out several games, prevents teams from gathering for any type of indoor or outdoor practice.

The pandemic has shut down a significant amount of routine life, which, for many people, includes high school athletics.

“Our first game is supposed to be on March 23, and as soon as the 27th hit we were going to start playing pretty often over spring break [the week of March 30 to April 3],” said Karos last week.

All K-12 schools in Illinois are closed until at least April 8. Even if regular classes and athletic events start up on that day, a sizable portion of high school teams’ spring seasons will be lost.

“I’m trying to pretend the weather just isn’t allowing us to play this early, like in years past, but it’s definitely weighing on me, thinking about the time I’m losing with the team, not just from the softball side of things,” Karos said. “They are a great group of girls who deserve to have a memorable season.”

Karos and the Warriors held their first official practice of the 2020 season on March 4. Eight days later, the team held what turned out to be its final practice of the month.

“Our last practice was March 12, but it feels like so long ago,” said Karos, who has had almost daily contact with her team. Her connections with the Warriors include providing links to old NCAA games on YouTube, along with posting theme days on Instagram.

“Anything to keep them as close as I can during such a crazy, unpredictable time,” she said. “I know they aren’t just sitting around at home. Many of them are focusing on E-learning, as well as doing any skill training or workout that can be accomplished in their living room or in their own back yard.”

All-conference Warriors Seniors Everett Stubblefield (No. 3-left) and Sam Tumilty (No. 5-right) of the Willowbrook boys basketball team were both named to the West Suburban Gold Conference’s 2019-20 All-Conference team. Both Warriors played in all 33 of their team’s games during the season, which ended earlier this month. Stubblefield averaged a team-leading 21.2 points per game. He made 89 of 273 shots (nearly 33 percent) of his attempts from 3-point range and connected on 94 of 129 (almost 73 percent) of his free-throw attempts. Stubblefield, who became the program’s all-time leading scorer near the end of the season, also contributed 153 rebounds, 101 steals and 73 assists. Tumilty posted Willowbrook’s second-best scoring output, averaging 12.5 points per game. He made 45 of 162 (about 28 percent) of his 3-point attempts.

Tumilty provided 142 rebounds, 82 steals and a team-leading 116 assists during the season. The Warriors finished the 2019-20 campaign with an overall record of 1320. Willowbrook went 4-8 in conference play to place fifth in the West Suburban Gold standings.

Relay for Life fundraiser brings in almost $90,000

Earlier this month, about 500 students from Willowbrook High School and Addison Trail High School took part in the 10th annual Relay for Life of District 88 Youth fundraiser. The students from the two District 88 schools spent the night in Willowbrook’s field house during the fundraiser, which raised money for the American Cancer Society. Before the event, students formed fundraising teams. A team of Willowbrook sophomores—It’s Po22ible—raised the third-most money of all the teams. The students from the Class of 2022 raised over $15,500.
