Fenton Board moves to proceed with referendum Seeking voter approval for $129.7 million to upgrade high school

At its meeting on Wednesday, March 16, the Board of Education at Fenton Community High School District 100 voted to proceed with a referendum seeking voter approval to modernize and expand Fenton High School.

A $129.7 million community-driven plan will address critical deficiencies in the 1950s school building and the surrounding campus, plus allow Fenton to transform its educational programs to better compete with others in DuPage County, according to Superintendent James Ongtengco.

Approval to begin this plan will appear on the ballot as a referendum in the June 28 primary election. Proceeds from the referendum will only be able to be used for building improvements.

“Investing in schools adds value to a community,” Ongtengco said. “We are witnessing incredible community development all around us, but Fenton itself has not received comprehensive enhancements since taxpayers approved the last referendum in 1975.

Future Bison at Wood Dale Jr. High School recently entered their future city “Greater Papyrus” in the online Future City National Competition. Established in 1992, Future City challenges students to showcase their engineering solutions to a citywide sustainability issue. This year’s theme, Waste-Free Future, tasked teams to design a waste-free city using the principles of a circular economy.

Greater Papyrus and its team of Wood Dale engineers won the Illinois Regional and is now facing 40 teams from schools across the United States. The national champion was to be announced on Wednesday.

County, DuPage Foundation launch new partnership Chairman Dan Cronin and County Board members Don Puchalski, Ashley Selmon, and Sam Tornatore presented a $10.6 million check to the DuPage Foundation at its Feb. 22 meeting. These funds will support a new strategic grantmaking partnership known as the DuPage Community Transformation Partnership.

DuPage County approved an agreement in January to provide $10.6 million in federal COVID-19 relief funding for the Foundation to implement a grant program to support social service not-for-profit organizations helping DuPage County residents most severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The program will focus on providing assistance for food insecurity, housing instability, mental health and substance abuse.

Guidelines will be developed over the next few months and an announcement regarding the application process will be made in spring 2022.

County launches online permitting system DuPage County residents no longer need to file permit applications in-person. On Jan. 31, DuPage County launched its new online permitting system, allowing residents to apply for permits from home.

The new system will allow for electronic submissions of several types of permits, including building permits, highway permits, utility permits, zoning entitlements, and more. It will also allow residents to track the progress of their permit application online as DuPage County moves to a paperless permitting program.

The permitting system will bring the Building and Zoning, Division of Transportation, and Public Works departments into the existing system that has been utilized by Stormwater Management for the past three years.

DuPage County, SCARCE to host 16th annual Sustainable Design Challenge DuPage County and SCARCE are now accepting project registrations from local high school students for the 16th annual Sustainable Design Challenge. Scheduled for Tuesday, April 5, the Sustainable Design Challenge encourages students to construct building and landscape models using environmental and water-friendly design practices.

In addition to inspiring students to explore careers in urban planning, architecture and engineering, the competition promotes environmental and stormwater education within Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) curricula in local high schools. All DuPage County high schools are encouraged to participate.

The district offers two soccer experiences this spring: in-house and inter-village soccer. In-house soccer is geared toward beginners in kindergarten, first and second grades. Practices and games run from April 12 through June 7 at Varble Park. The fee is $45 for residents, $56 non-residents.

Inter-village soccer participants compete in the Mid-Suburban Recreation Soccer League, which has teams in the following divisions: pre-kindergarten and kindergarten, first and second grade, third and fourth grade, fifth and sixth grade and seventh and eighth grade. Each team will practice one or two days a week and play a seven-game Saturday schedule. The fee is $60 for residents, $81 for others.

Spring Tiny Tot T-Ball begins Monday, April 18, and runs through May 9 at Sunset Park. Children learn the fundamentals of baseball, including catching, throwing, hitting and running the bases. The resident fee is $35, $46 for non-residents.

The park district also offers adult sports for those participants aged

18 and older, including men’s soccer, men’s basketball, men’s 12-inch softball and co-ed 14-inch softball. A Co-ed volleyball league is also being formed.

For the first time, the park district is offering an adult men’s soccer league, which begins Sunday, April 3. The season begins Sunday, April 3, and consists of a regular-season schedule followed by a postseason tournament and championship May 22, with prizes going to the winner of each. The entry fee is $325 per team.

The adult men’s basketball league is a competitive, full-court men’s basketball league in which teams of up to 12 players compete in an eightweek, round-robin schedule in addition to a playoff. All games are officiated by Illinois High School Association (IHSA) referees. Prizes go to the first- and second-place teams.

The fee is $550 per team.

The men’s 12-inch softball season runs Tuesday evenings from May 3 to July 12 at Redmond Park. The sixgame regular season is followed by a postseason tournament with prizes awarded to the regular and postseason champions. Registration is $525 per team.

The park district also offers a Friday night, co-ed 14-inch softball league that runs from May 6 to July 15 at Redmond Park. Women are allowed to use gloves while men are not. The six-game regular season is followed by a postseason tournament with prizes awarded to the regular and postseason champions. Registration is $525 per team.

An adult co-ed volleyball league is also being formed. Teams of six are being formed now, and the league will begin once enough teams are registered. The eight-week match schedule will feature rally scoring and will be officiated by IHSA referees. Matches are played at the Deer Grove Leisure Center gym, and the fee is only $325 per team.

Those interested in registering their child for a sports team may do so in person at the Bensenville Park District registration desk at the Deer Grove Leisure Center, 1000 W. Wood Street, 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Mrs. Kulig currently teaches at CICS Northtown Academy High School in Chicago. She graduated from Fenton in 2002 and took several of Fenton’s early childhood education courses, as well as participated in Fenton’s Family Careers & Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) club.

The world of Wordle

There’s a new game sweeping the Internet. It’s called Wordle and the premise is pretty simple. You get six chances to correctly guess, ascertain and or sleuth out a random, fiveletter word. With each guess you are told which letters are in the word, which are not and which are in the right space within the word.

If you correctly guess the word in four guesses or less you earn bragging rights on various social media platforms. Any game that sets up bragging rights on social media is destined for stardom. In that regard, Wordle is already a celebrity.

There are a couple of magical things about Wordle. First, it spans generations. My son introduced me to the game; and I know friends who compete in family challenges with their 90-something grandmothers as well as their 10-year-old fifth graders. There aren’t too many activities that can appeal to boomers, the X, Y and Zers and those who’ve lived through realities like the Great Depression and WWII. Wordle does just that.

Second, you can only play one word each day. You can’t get consumed by it and spend hours on word after word after word. It’s a one and done. You do the Wordle and wait until tomorrow for a new word to become Wordle-able.

Well, unless you are an addicted fanatic, and find the Wordle archive online. Then you’ll have access to all 200-plus Wordle words. It could keep you busy for days—not that I’d know from personal experience.

Wordle may be based on a simple premise, but the way one approaches the game varies from person to person. This reveals a good deal about us as individuals.

There’s been much speculation about how to select the first word for your daily guess. There are two distinct groups of Wordlers in this regard. The first are the foot loose and fancy free. They choose a word based on a feeling or a sign or maybe a dream they had the night before. Every day it’s a different word, because playing any other way would be boring.

Then there is the other group, to which I belong. I call us the rigid Wordlers because we have standard words to start our journey each day. Within my first two words, the goal is to use all five vowels along with a handful of the most popular

consonants. Lately, my first word is “autos.” For the longest time, my second word was “brine,” but a couple of weeks ago I changed that to “diner” because I thought having the “er” at the end might be advantageous.

Within a week of that change, the Wordle for the day was (wait for it…) brine. Exclamation point. So much for the “er” on the end being advantageous. Suffice to say I didn’t do any bragging on social media that day.

Once I start a game, I finish it within minutes. One of my sons will take a guess or two and then ponder it for an hour or more while he goes about the rest of his day. There are as many techniques to Wordle as there are five-letter words in the English language – and that’s a lot.

Some days, the word is tougher than others. This happens (in my opinion) when one letter is used twice in the same word. For instance you know there is an S or a V or an I in your word, but you might not consider two of each of those letters. Consider “vivid,” “eases” and “shush.”

A year ago, Wordle wasn’t in my vocabulary, because it hadn’t been invented yet. Now, according to the New York Times, more than 300,000 people play it daily. I’m one of them. And other countries are jumping on the bandwagon. Canada has its own version called Canuckle.

In times that can seem scary and bleak, Wordle is a vivid bright light. It eases us toward peace, and when we solve, we shush so we don’t spoil the quest for others. It can bring about a sense of pride and unity with other Wordlers. From my perspective, there’s only one thing that could make it more perfect: If Wordle itself was a five-letter word.

But that would be asking a lot – or better put in Wordle terms – heaps, loads and scads.

Congress passes 2022 government spending package

By U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi Congress recently passed the bipartisan government funding package for 2022, which President Biden subsequently signed, and I was proud to support.

Beyond preventing a government shutdown and maintaining vital government services, this legislation included emergency aid to Ukraine as well as crucial investments in our safety net programs. Additionally, the new law included many of my own initiatives to help American consumers and protect our national security while directing funding for important community projects in the 8th District.

Throughout my time as Chairman of the Oversight Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy, I have been fighting big tobacco to end the youth vaping epidemic. E-cigarette companies have been marketing their products to our youth, and now companies have begun to evade FDA oversight of tobacco-derived nicotine through the use of synthetic nicotine.

However, in bringing together U.S. representatives and senators from both parties, I was able to successfully include a provision in the spending package that closed this loophole to ensure that the FDA can regulate synthetic nicotine. The spending package also included funding for which I advocated to expand the FDA’s program to reduce the dangerously high levels of toxic heavy metals in baby food, which is an issue that I uncovered in my Subcommittee investigation last year.

In addition to my initiatives to protect families, the appropriations package included my bills to protect U.S. national security through the tracking

of “gray zone activities”—actions such as disinformation campaigns or terrorist financing – and through the monitoring of the relationship between China and the United Arab Emirates.

The package also included provisions I spearheaded to expand clean energy generation through the solar industry and job training through career and technical education programs, areas for which I have been an active advocate in Congress.

Finally, the government spending package included funding for community projects across the country. I am proud that nine projects in our district that I nominated were approved for funding, bringing over $3.1 million in support for critical local initiatives.

Of that funding, HIRE360 Business Development Center is receiving funding to train workers for 21st century jobs, and the Village of Hoffman Estates Domestic Violence Project and the WINGS Program Inc. of Rolling Meadows will both receive funding to support victims of domestic violence.

The Wood Dale Public Library District and the Chicago/Villa Park YWCA are both receiving funding for early childhood learning programs while the Salt Creek School District 48 is receiving support for its afterschool program.

I’m also proud I was able to secure financial support for mental and behavioral health services through the Village of Schaumburg’s programs as well as the Access Community Health Network. The spending package also includes funding to improve the safety of National Parkway and Higgins Road (IL-72) by improving pedestrian signals. This year’s government funding package addresses a wide range of our community’s needs, and I’m glad I was able to secure these bipartisan provisions to directly help our district.

Update on the situation in Ukraine Russian President Vladimir Putin has continued his barbaric, unprovoked attack on the people of Ukraine.

Each day brings stories of brave Ukrainians throwing themselves in harm’s way to stop Putin’s tanks, disarming bombs, and more broadly defending their nation’s independence. As part of our 2022 government spending package, Congress authorized over $13 billion to support Ukraine by sending U.S. troops to Eastern European allied countries, providing weapons to allied forces, supporting refugees, and enforcing economic sanctions on Russia.

As a member of the House Intelligence Committee, I participated in a hearing last week with top American intelligence officials on the threats our nation faces across the world.

During the hearing, we discussed the importance of President Putin’s domestic unpopularity, the impact of a Russian oil ban, the reaction of the People’s Republic of China to the consequences faced by Russia, and we determined that the city of Kyiv would face serious food and water shortages within two weeks if cut off by Russian forces.

That’s why we need to support a possible Ukrainian insurgency, a policy outlined by my bipartisan Supplying Ukraine with Provisions to Protect against Ongoing Russian Threats (SUPPORT) Act. The effort to preserve Ukraine’s independence is of enormous consequence for the freedom of the Ukrainian people but also for millions of people across the world threatened by autocratic regimes.

Overdose statistics in DuPage County for 2021 DuPage County Coroner Richard Jorgensen, M.D. recently reported the following data concerning overdose deaths in DuPage County for the year 2021.

The epidemic of opioid and other legal and illegal drugs continues to ravage the county.

There was a decrease in the number of opioid related deaths (102 vs.

112 in 2020) but this seemingly good news is tempered by the increase in the total number of overdose deaths (138 vs. 130 in 2020).

Over the past few years there has been a major shift in the types and number of drugs found in blood of the deceased.

Prior to 2015 the drugs found were either heroin or prescription drugs.

Most often there was only one or two drugs in the system.

However, starting in 2015 there was an influx of illicit Fentanyl in the FDA approved form and multiple new isomers.

There was also an increase in polypharmacy, which means that there

were multiple different drugs found in the system. In this past year we saw these trends accentuated. The most important trend is that heroin is a minor drug at this point and fentanyl has become the major drug causing death.

Last year, there was only one death solely due to heroin, 13 due to heroin plus fentanyl and 17 with heroin, fentanyl and cocaine. fentanyl alone caused 29 deaths and fentanyl and cocaine caused 16 deaths. There were 102 opioid related deaths last year and only 36 (35 percent) involved heroin while 83 (81 percent) had fentanyl in the blood.

It must be stated that the analysis of this information is very difficult due to the poly pharmacy. It was very unusual for an analysis to find one or two drugs. Rather, it was commonplace to find up to 15 drugs in the system making it difficult to determine which drug was responsible for the death.

There has also been an increase in non-opioid drugs, especially cocaine

and prescription medications causing or contributing to death. In total there were 26 (vs. 18 in 2020) deaths that were due to non-opioid medications and 9 (vs. 6 in 2020) due to cocaine alone.

The previously noted trend of increasing age of the deceased has continued. In 2013 the most deaths were seen in the age group of the 20s and second most in the 30s. Last year the most common ages were the 30s through the 50s.

WorkNet DuPage announces paid internships available for young adults So far, 18 DuPage County businesses participating The DuPage County Workforce Development Division at workNet DuPage on Tuesday, March 15 announced it is expanding its Youth Employment Program, Make Your Way (MY Way), to offer paid internships for young people ages 17-24.

The program’s expansion will connect the county’s youth to professional opportunities and work experiences of their choice through local employers in the private, nonprofit, and public sectors. The initiative allows young adults

to meet with marketing, nonprofit, and creative professionals, as well as tech, manufacturing, and industrial sectors to explore careers, build critical work skills, network, and gain competitive paid work experience.

Participants receive intensive support throughout the process, including: • Ongoing career advisement and job readiness programming • Active job search help with the guide of a job developer • One year of follow-up services • The option to attend school or a job training program, up to $10,000, ending with a nationally recognized certification.

The pandemic sparked disproportionate economic and mental hardship

among young adults. At a time in life when young adults typically launch a career, many experienced a “lost year.”

Young workers’ already-higher unemployment rates tripled – with people of color most affected. During the pandemic, youth unemployment in Illinois reached a staggering 23.3%.

“As our County bounces back from the COVID-19 pandemic, the young adults in DuPage County need these transformative work opportunities more than ever. I encourage them to explore and take full advantage of this program’s potential,” said DuPage County Board Member Amy Chavez.
