St. Baldrick’s: A true pot of gold

BENSENVILLE — If enthusiasm was available in cans, Evan K. Summers could fill an entire pantry until it was flowing in the streets.

That’s the first thing you’ll notice about Summers, who sat down with The Independent last week to talk about his new position and his plans for the Village – his seemingly endless enthusiasm. None of those plans include curling up and allowing O’Hare to bulldoze right through the town square, nor driving residents and visitors away with excessive noise.

“I’m so excited about working with this huge industrial park Bensenville has right here next to the airport,” he said.

“There are so many interesting things that are done or made right here, it’s fascinating.”

Summers pointed out that Bensenville manufacturers provide the little pieces that are vital to the operation of other kinds of equipment that we as consumers use every day.

Brings enthusiasm to job, plus experience that began at age 8 piece is manufactured right here in Bensenville,” he said. “There is also a piece of housing for the gears of the ‘Jaws of Life’ – that piece of housing is also manufactured here and the Jaws of Life – as important as they are to saving lives – could not function without that piece, without the housing.” (Jaws of Life is the name of an apparatus, which can cut through metal to remove a car accident victim from a mangled vehicle.)

“I don’t think people even realize all the things that are made here in Bensenville and we should be proud.”

With a degree in public management and government finance from Indiana University, Summers went on to Purdue to obtain his MBA, with a focus in economic development. Prior to accepting the position with the Village of Bensenville, he has been working in Berwyn for the past eight years as an assistant city administrator.

The Independent posed a question: Did you have any reservations about accepting the position, knowing O’Hare Airport was right next door and was often threatening to virtually push Bensenville out of its way? Summers’ reply was “absolutely not.”

While he recognizes the delicate balance between Village and O’Hare Airport, he quickly adds that it’s better to find a way to work together rather than fight it at every turn.

“It’s here to stay,” he said about the airport. “We have to accept that. We have to work together and it’s definitely a balancing act. Bensenville is here, that is,

its manufacturers are here because of the close proximity to O’Hare. But the airport has to work with us, too.

We cannot allow O’Hare to threaten our quality of life.”

He said plans were to continue working with the AirEVAN K. port Authority to mitigate SUMMERS the noise Bensenville residents deal with every day.

“We want to work with the Commission on possibly rotating the flight patterns or moving the plans for new runways farther to the north, where there are fewer residences to disrupt.”

Besides the business, industrial and economic facets of the Village, Summers also appreciates the Village’s connection to the world of hockey through The Edge ice arena. “To have an ice rink that’s actually earning revenue, that’s very nice for our community,” he said. “There is a great deal we can build upon to maximize those facilities.”

Summers and his wife currently live in Chicago, where she is a first grade teacher.

He plans to move soon just to avoid the commute.

As far as experience, Summers can go all the way back to his first time speaking in a public forum – when he was 8 years old.

“My father was the budget director for the City of San Antonio while I was growing up,” he explained. “My first time speaking in public was before the San Antonio City Council about the baseball fields I played on. I was 8 years old at the time!”

It may be a few years later but that experience clearly set up Evan Summers for a long career in Village management that Bensenville is lucky to have.

No appointment is necessary for the Clinic, which is open seven days a week, Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. and Saturday – Sunday, 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Addison March 18 • Nadia H. Qtaishat, 44, of Broadview, was arrested at around 12:50 a.m. Police said Qtaistat had an original warrant for theft out of the Addison Police Department.

• Joseph A. Rodriquez, 25, of Westchester, was arrested near North and Route 83 at around 12:24 a.m. and charged with DUI, speeding, no valid registration improper lane usage and failure to signal when required.

March 17 • Christopher M. Becerra, 19, of Addison, was arrested near Byron and Addison at around 8:30 p.m. and charged with

theft. Police said Becerra took a victim’s cell phone from her vehicle.

• Francisco Landa, 29, of Addison, was arrested near Fullerton and Stewart at around 7:44 p.m. Police said Landa had a failure to appear warrant out of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office. The suspect also was charged with no valid driver’s license and no insurance.

• Stephanie Morales, 22, of Addison, was arrested near Lincoln and Michael at around 4:27 p.m. and was charged with possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia.

• Justin I. Pawlarczyk, 29, of Elgin, was arrested near Addison and Wrightwood at around 10:12 p.m. Police said Pawlarczyk had a failure to appear warrant for DUI out of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office. He also was charged with driving with a suspended license and registration.

• A 57-year-old Addison man was arrested in the 600 block

of N. Katherine Lane at around 7:43 p.m. and charged with domestic battery and interference with the reporting of a domestic battery.

• A 58-year-old Addison man was arrested in the 200 block of Mill Road at around 3:57 p.m.

Police said that while performing a warrant service on the suspect for an original warrant out of the Lagrange Park Police Department for domestic battery, he was found to be in possession of cannabis and drug paraphernalia.

March 16 • Joshmar Flores, 19, of Lombard, was arrested near Lake and First at around 10:27 p.m. and charged with possession of cannabis and failure to signal.

• Tanya A. Miciels, 42, of Lombard, was arrested at a local store in the 1000 block of N. Rohlwing at around 4:50 p.m. and charged with retail theft.

March 15 • Antonio Morante-Lopez,

18, and Jorge L. Vargas, 19, both of Addison, was arrested in the 600 block of Lincoln Ave. at around 10:16 p.m.

According to the police report, officers stopped vehicles traveling at a high rate of speed.

Vargas was found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia and had two failure to appear warrants out of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Department for battery and consumption of alcohol by a minor; and, a failure to appear warrant for reckless conduct out of the Chicago Police Department. Police said Vargas was also in possession of cannabis.

• Martin Silva, 20, of Villa Park, was arrested in the 100 block of W. Michael Lane and the 500 block of Valerie Lane at around 6 p.m. and charged with criminal defacement of property, unlawful use of a weapon and disorderly conduct.

March 14 Steven M. Impastato, 55, of Northlake, was arrested in the 900 block of W. National Ave. at around 4:58 p.m. and charged with possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia.

March 13 • William C. Canty III, 33, of Chicago, was arrested near Lake and Rohlwing at around 1:22 a.m. and charged with DUI, improper standing on a roadway and no insurance.

Police said Canty was found asleep in the roadway while operating a vehicle.

• Mitchell K. Geng, 36, of Addison, was issued a citation for retail theft at a local store in the 1000 block of N. Rohlwing Road at around 11:02 p.m.

• Kimberly D. Loggins, 34, of Chicago, was issued a citation for retail theft at a local store in the 1000 block of N. Rohlwing Road at around 7:57 p.m.

• Oscar Mendoza-Gomez, 42, of Addison, was arrested in the 100 block of S. Lincoln at around 12:24 p.m. and charged with aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

March 10 Lee S. Alexopoulos, 27, of Addison, was arrested in the 1-100 block of W. Lake St. at around 11:16 p.m. Police said Alexopoulos had an original warrant out of the Franklin Park Police Department for forgery.

March 9 Angel L. DeJesus, 21, of Elgin; Brayan J. Hernandez, 20, of Elgin; Jose C. Ramirez, 19, of West Chicago; and Luis N. Ramirez, 20, of Hanover Park, were arrested in the 300 block of Spencer St. in West Chicago at around 7:35 p.m.

The suspects were picked up at the West Chicago Police Department and transported to the Addison Police Department, according to police. Luis Ramirez was charged with burglary and possession of burglary tools; DeJesus, Hernandez and Jose Ramirez were charged with residential burglary.

• Criminal damage to a vehicle was reported in the 200 block of Kenilworth at around 8:12 p.m. Police said an unknown suspects(s) in a red, older model vehicle threw a beer bottle out of the vehicle and shot soft pellets at a trailer, causing damage.

• Theft of services was reported at a restaurant at around 6:52 p.m. Police said a female suspect ordered a meal for pickup. When she picked up the order, police said she left the restaurant without paying.

ndian Trail Junior High sixth graders participated in a collaborative language arts/social science unit on Julius Caesar. On Wednesday, March 16, the students held debates with four students from each language arts class participating as debaters, arguing whether Julius Caesar’s murder was justified or not. At the end of each debate, the students in the auditorium voted with a thumbs-up to determine the winner of the debate.

Teachers Terra Henry, Kathy Brown, and Christina Vasilakos set the tone for the event with music and decorations. They— and many students—dressed in togas.

This first grader in Mrs. Rose’s class at Army Trail School shows cards used in the understanding of wants vs. needs, one of several topics discussed as part of the “JA in a Day” program held recently. Volunteers brought the Junior Achievement lessons on financial literacy skills into classrooms for a one-day learning experience. In addition to wants vs. needs, the lessons covered topics of salaries and taxes, and work-readiness.

EMT students, one from WBHS, named state HOSA champs

VILLA PARK/ADDISON — Two high school students enrolled in the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program at Technology Center of DuPage took first place at the 2016 HOSA State Leadership Conference in Decatur on March 9-11. HOSA is the Health Occupations Student Association, a national leadership organization for students in health education classes. Five students from TCD’s medical science programs participated in the conference and qualified through written examination to compete in several contests.

Joseph Egan, a Villa Park resident and student at Willowbrook joined Matthew Slonoff of Hinsdale Central, to take first place in the EMT competition.

Both seniors are now eligible to compete in the International HOSA Leadership Conference on June 22-25 in Nashville.

Marynels Garcines, a senior in TCD’s Nursing Assistant Training Program, placed among the top ten in the state for the Medical Terminology contest. Nursing Assistant students Chloe Purpura, a senior, and Shane Fredericks, a junior at Fenton High School in Bensenville, competed in the Nursing Assistant contest.

The scenario Egan and Slonoff were given during competition was that of a badly-injured motorcycle rider. The team had to respond appropriately, stabilize the scene, remove the helmet, identify life threats, then prioritize and treat the patient.

They were also judged on how effectively they communicated with each other, the assisting caregivers, and the test proctor.

Egan admitted to being very nervous at first, but then his skills kicked in.

“I thought we did pretty well,” he said. “The worst part was waiting for the results.”

The HOSA Illinois conference brings high school students from across the state to participate in health and safety symposiums and leadership experiences. TCD students were

hese Lincoln 5th grade students are using Lego WeDo construction sets purchased with Foundation mini-grants that were awarded last spring. Thanks for the grant, teachers Rhea Heggaton and Megan McGuire were able to purchase five Lego sets that allow ten students to work in pairs to create dynamic projects with motion and sound. They provide students with a hands-on opportunity to develop STEM skills, including engineering and computer programming.

Fenton sophomore Riley belts grand slam in Bison win Addison Trail boys track team first at Morton Invitational

The Fenton softball team had the bats out in full force recently.

The Bison pounded out 15 hits en route to a 21-3 five-inning non-conference victory over Chicago North Grand.

Fenton scored five runs in the first inning, six in each of the second and third innings, and four more in the fourth inning.

Sophomore Rose Riley hit two home

runs, including a grand-slam, and drove in seven runs. She finished 3-for-4 and scored four runs.

Freshman Isa Lozada went 3-for-5 and scored three runs, while freshman Payton Pugliese was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and a triple.

In the pitching circle, Pugliese, in her first varsity start, pitched three innings and struck out three to earn the win.

Addison Trail boys track The Addison Trail boys track team placed first at the recent Morton invitational.

The Blazers won the meet with 120 points. Riverside-Brookfield was sec-

ond with 11 points.

Marco Flores won the 600 run, while Julio Cervantes was the winner of the 3,200 run. Rayan Baig took first in the 400 dash.

The four-lap relay team of Baig, Anthony Pizzo, Chris Purdy and Stefano Favuzzi placed first, while the 1,600 relay team of Jordan Carr-Jones, Demetrio Cervantes, Julio Cervantes and Marco Flores also was victorious.

Willowbrook softball The Willowbrook softball team is coming off a 2015 season where it went 24-11 and won a regional game.

The Warriors return the likes of seniors

Zoe Dannenberg (pitcher), Jordan Marczewski (CF) and Kalyn Schuda (1B) along with sophomore shortstop Jiana Funteas.

Key newcomers to the team are seniors Meghan Koterba, Alexa Henderson and Sabrina Conforti, juniors Veronica Swan, Megan Talan and Emily King, sophomore Katie Smith and freshman Brianna Richardson.

“We lost 12 seniors last year so we had a lot of spots open on varsity,” said coach Rachel Karos. “With that brings some young talent but not a lot of varsity experience yet. This team is hardworking and determined. I’m confident with each game we will get better.”

Willowbrook baseball team looking for big things in 2016

The Willowbrook baseball team set a school record for wins last season with 26.

A year later, the Warriors still are sitting in good shape with 20 of those 26 wins back on the mound.

Coach Vic Wisner welcomes back college-bound pitchers Cam Zunkel (Illinois-Springfield), Matt Garbacz (Roosevelt University) and Matt Pizur (North Park). Zunkel and Pizur were all-West Suburban Conference Gold Division selections last season.

“We bring back almost 100

innings of experience from last year,” said Wisner. “You don’t see that all the time. We’re excited to have those guys back.”

Willowbrook also returns senior TJ Geritano (CF), who is at full strength after not playing much last year coming off a football knee injury. Geritano is headed to Trinity Christian University to play baseball.

“TJ is back and he’s a bat we didn’t have last year,” said Wisner.

Wisner also has high hopes for junior second baseman Kyle Ferguson, who batted north of .400 last year as a 10th grader

on the big club.

“I think Kyle is going to jump out this season,” said Wisner.

“He’s worked so hard in the offseason and gained strength in the weight room. I think he’s going to shock some people.

He batted over .400 last year so I don’t know how much he will shock people. He’s going to have a breakout year.”

Willowbrook did lose McHenry County College signee and pitcher Joe Strem toTommy John surgery.

“That’s a major blow for us,” said Wisner. “It’s going to be hard to replace Joe. He’s a leader and a senior. We’re

going to have to have some younger guys step up.”

Wisner noted juniors Alex Michaelson and MJ Ranieri are vying for innings on the mound.

Offensively, Wisner likes what he’s seen in the cage inside, in outdoor batting practice and in two intra-squad games.

“We’ve looked good,” he said. “We have a lot of speed and contact at the top with TJ and Cam Zunkel. We have some power in the middle of the order with Chris DeSalvo, Kyle Martyniuk and Mark Molitor. We’re in good shape.”

Track team wins Metro Suburban Conference indoor title

The Fenton girls track team punctuated its start to the 2016 season by winning the Metro Suburban Conference indoor championship held at Glenbard South in Glen Ellyn.

Fenton won the team title with 96 points, ahead of host Glenbard South, which had 87 points.

Fenton’s Katrina Krebasch won the high-jump title with a leap of 5-0. Skylar Dolecki tied for 11th at 4-3.

Krebasch was second in the pole vault with an effort of 7-6. Kaitlyn Jordan took fourth at 6-6.

Emmy Burris won the long jump with a leap of 17-1 1/2. Hanna Matuszewski was eighth at 14-1 3/4.

Krebrasch won the triple jump with a mark of 32-3 1/2. Ashley Lira was 10th

at 27-10.

Maria Trentaude was second in the shot put at 33-8, while Danielle Ferbrache was 13th at 26-4 1/2.

Fenton took fifth in the 3,200 relay with a time of 10:58.68. That team included Alexus Petrella, Jessica McCauley, Cassidy Kelly and Marisol Garcia.

Charity Bullis was fifth in the 3,200 run at 13:21.51, while Kathy Dominguez was ninth at 14:49.42. Jordan took 13th in the 55 hurdles with a time of 10.92. Dulce Garcia was 14th at 11.04.

Burris won the 55 dash in 7.41. Sarah Mason took eighth in the event at 7.89.

Petrella was sixth in the 800 at 2:49.44.

Fenton won the 4-by-160 relay with a time of 1:28.24. hat team included Nina Bush, Matuszewski, Mason and Burris.

Kelly was third in the 400 with a time of 1:06.42. Gianna Caliendo was fifth at

1:07.96.

Jessica McCauley placed seventh in the 1,600 with a time of 6:07.24. Matuszewski was third in the 200 with a time of 28.30, while Mason was fifth at 28.70.

Fenton placed third in the 1,600 relay with a time of 4:31.68. That team included Kelly, Marisol Garcia and Caliendo.

The MSC indoor meet featured 13 teams.

Martyniuk and Danny Olson will handle the catching duties.

“This is the first time we haven’t had a returning catcher,” said Wisner. “Dom McDonnell was a three-year player. We’ll be in good shape with Kyle and Danny. We’ve really been stressing defense. When Cam Zunkel doesn’t pitch he’ll play shortstop and then you have Kyle Ferguson up the middle and TJ in center. We know we have to pick it up on defense.”

Willowbrook will encounter numerous tough teams in the WSC Gold, including Hinsdale South and defending conference champion Downers Grove South, which hasn’t lost a Gold game in two years.

“There is a lot of good baseball in our conference,” said Wisner. “Last year we set a school record for wins and we have 20 wins back on the mound. We have high expectations and so do the kids. They want to win some hardware and make a deep postseason run.

It’s a super group of guys who are very coachable. The guys before them set the bar high and these guys don’t want to let them down. They are working incredibly hard every day.”

Willowbrook was scheduled to open the season earlier this week against Naperville North and Glenbard South. The Warriors have a first-week WSC Gold bye and don’t open the conference season until Saturday, April 9 against Leyden.

Kalbas competes in Class 4A state 3-point shooting contest Junior looking forward to his final season of Blazers basketball

Addison Trail junior Jack Kalbas found himself in the most competitive of the Class 4A state 3-point shooting finals brackets recently.

Kalbas made 10 three-point shots in Group 2 of the preliminary round of the finals held at the Peoria Civic Center’s Carver Arena.

Kalbas was one of three in his group to make 10 shots, but 11 was the cutoff in his bracket. Group 2 featured seven of the eight entrants making 10 or more shots. No other grouping had more than three players make 10 or more shots.

“Making state means a lot,” said Kalbas earlier last week.

“I’ve been working on my shot for a long time. It’s an awesome experience to be able to go down there.”

Kalbas said he takes about 200 shots a day. “I take 3-pointers or I’m working on things like dribbling and shooting,” he said.

Kalbas advanced to the state

finals by making nine shots in the regional final and nine shots in the sectional final.

“I did good on the first two racks at sectionals and then I struggled on the last one,” he said. “I could have made more.

The key is to get that last rack down. That’s the end of the balls. It’s important to get into a rhythm right away. You get 15 balls and they go by quick.”

Kalbas said the entire 3-point contest is unnerving in general.

“It’s pretty nerve-racking,” he said. “You are out there and all the people are watching you.

I’m always a little nervous.”

he enjoys following professional teams. He’s a Bulls and Toronto Raptors fan on the NBA front and enjoys the Pittsburgh Steelers during football season. These days his attention has turned to the Cubs.

Kalbas, who made the honor roll in his most recent semester at Addison Trail, likes where the Blazers’ basketball program is headed.

“Over the past couple years we’ve gotten a lot better,” he said. “We’ve had back-to-back seasons now where we’ve won 15 games, which is very nice.”

And Kalbas will be part of next year’s team that will try and make it three years in a row.

“I did pretty well,” said Kalbas, who has played AAU basketball in the past with the Carol Stream-based F3 Hoops program. “At the end of the year I really started picking up my game. I let the game come to me at the end.”

Kalbas’ beginnings in the sport can be traced back to his grade-school days. “I love everything about basketball,” he said. “I’m always having fun when I am playing—no matter what. It’s the only sport I play besides baseball (Kalbas also plays on the Addison Trail baseball team).”

Celebrate National Library Week in Bensenville National Library Week will be observed April 10-16, 2016 with the theme, “Libraries Transform.” This is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association and libraries across the country each April. It is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation’s libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support.

During National Library Week at the Bensenville Community Public Library, one way that staff members will be celebrating is by dressing up and “transforming” into their favorite superheroes, favorite book characters, and more. Stop by each day of National Library Week to see their transformations!

There are many ways that the Bensenville Library is encouraging patrons to get involved during the celebration week. In honor of National Library Week, the Library will once again run the popu-

From April 10 through April 24 the Library will waive fines in exchange for nonperishable donations for the Bensenville/Wood Dale Food Pantry. Each one can or box you donate equals $1.00 of overdue fines.

Examples of their book spine poetry will be used in Bensenville Public Library’s upcoming social media campaign celebrating National Library Week.

Tioga students raise nearly $4,000 to empower Nicaraguan peers Members of the Tioga Elementary School Helping Heroes Service Club sold 726 pulseras, or bracelets, during February to empower their peers in Nicaragua, raising a grand total of $3,930.

The Tioga initiative, which sold 30 purses as well, is part of the Pulsera Project, a national, nonprofit organization formed by students in 2009. The Pulsera Project buys bracelets from Nicaraguan artisans, many who are youth, at fair trade prices and sells them through school organizations such as Tioga’s Service Club. The funds raised go back to the Pulsera Project, which supports Nicaraguan youth through scholarships, housing programs, workers’ rights advocacy, shelter support and alternate energy programs.
