Volunteers turn out to support Matt Toole, family

This group of smiling people were just some of the friends and families who joined the 6th annual No Frills Fun Run that took place recently to raise money for the family of Matt Toole, an Elmhurst resident living with ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease. More than 400 runners and walkers, nearly 100 more than last year, signed up for the event that raised more than $50,000 for the Tooles. Since its inaugural run, the No Frills Fun Run has raised nearly $150,000; this year’s event raising the most funds yet.

By Illinois News Network Gov. Bruce Rauner is appealing to the Illinois Supreme Court a lower court’s ruling blocking him from implementing his last, best and final contract offer to the state’s largest public employee union. Earlier this month, The 4th District Appellate Court sided with AFSCME in a legal battle over whether the union and governor were at impasse over contract negotiations. “After 67 days of negotiation, the Administration presented AFSCME with a contract that reflects our last, best, and final offer. This is as far as we can go, and it is time to implement it,” Rauner General Counsel Dennis Murashko said in a statement released by the governor’s office. “Every day we don’t costs our taxpayers more than $2 million, which is why we are asking the Illinois Supreme Court to resolve this case quickly. The taxpayers deserve a contract substantially similar to the one ratified by 20 other unions and includes earning overtime after 40 hours, implementing merit pay, and using volunteers.” AFSCME has been without a contract since July 2015. The union is seeking salary increases and other benefits that would cost Illinois taxpayers more than $3 billion over the life of a new four-year contract. Rauner’s final offer includes a salary freeze for workers, who are the highest paid in the U.S. when adjusted for inflation. He also wants employees to pay more for their health insurance, but give them more options, and work a 40-hour week. Court-ordered spending already has Illinois spending billions more than it’s bringing in.
