Illinois Senate votes to overturn Governor’s veto of MAP grants SPRINGFIELD — On Wednesday, March 2, Sen. Don Harmon (D-Oak Park) joined other members of the Illinois Senate on March 2 in voting to override the governor’s veto of legislation that would provide college tuition assistance through the Illinois Monetary Award Program.

“Today, members of the Senate struck a blow for college students all over the state,” said Sen. Don Harmon (D-Oak Park). “These students and their families find themselves caught in the middle of a budget stalemate that is causing Illinois’ higher education network to unravel.

“Our message today is clear: these students have not been forgotten, and they deserve a chance to continue pursuing their education with the state’s help as promised. Overriding the governor’s veto of MAP grant funding was the right thing to do for the state of Illinois, for its people and for its economy.”

Come to Varble Park for Bensenville Park District’s Annual Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, March 19. The eggs will be hidden by the Easter Bunny and he will start the hunt by having all the children line up along the ribbon. Each child will be allowed to find 10 eggs. There will be 3 golden eggs added to the hunt and 3 lucky kids will win a basket filled with toys.

Children will be able to get their picture taken with the Easter Bunny and play games: ring toss, buckets, guess how many, prize wheel and more. Make sure to bring a camera, or you can purchase an instant print for $2. The egg hunt will be held outside, so dress accordingly to weather, and make sure to bring a basket or bag to hold your eggs. Three candidates are vying for the seat left vacant by Tammy Duckworth in the U.S. House of Representatives in the 8th District. The 8th District includes all of Villa Park and Addison and small sections of Bensenville and of Elmhurst.

The candidates are listed here alphabetically (not necessary as they are on the ballot): Deb Bullwinkel Bullwinkel is currently serving her first term as Village President of Villa Park, prior to that was a Village Trustee also for one term. Her professional backDEB BULLWINKEL ground includes a B. A. in Communications from Eastern Illinois University. She operates her own consulting business for not-for-profits, where she advocates for those with mental illness and developmental disabilities.

She has also worked with small business owners.

Bullwinkel’s platform and pledges: As an advocate for mental health, she pledges to cut healthcare costs and use the savings to protect Medicare; she will protect and support paid family leave; she pledges to ban assault weapons and get illegal guns off the streets; she also plans to expand quality mental health coverage so everyone can afford it.

Personal: After growing up in Bloomington with three adopted siblings, Bullwinkel earned her bachelors degree from Eastern Illinois University. Now 47, Bullwinkel calls Villa Park home along with her husband Michael Erlenbaugh.

Raja Krishnamoorthi A small business owner, Krishnamoorthi has served not only as Deputy Treasurer and Special Assistant Attorney General for the state RAJA of Illinois, but KRISHNAMOORTHI also as the Issues Director for the campaign of then-Senator Barack Obama. Before starting his businesses Sivananthan Labs and Episolar, Inc., he practiced law with the

firm of Kirkland & Ellis. Krishnamoorthi holds a degree in engineering from Princeton and a Harvard law degree.

Krishnamoorthi’s platform and pledges Krishnamoorthi is running for Congress on a progressive platform that includes protecting Social Security and Medicare; passing common-sense gun control; supporting America’s seniors; protecting the most vulnerable populations; working toward a cleaner environment,; protecting the right to choose; increasing access to affordable child care; and election reform.

Personal: Growing up in Peoria, the son of immigrants from India, Krishnamoorthi went to college on scholarships and graduated summa cum laude with a mechanical engineering degree from Princeton. He then graduated with honors from Harvard Law School. Now 42, he and his wife live in Schaumburg with their two children, Vijay, 10, and Vikram, 6.

Mike Noland Noland is a 30-plus year resident of Elgin, a veteran of the US Navy and was elected to the Illinois Senate in 2006. In the Senate, he is considered one of its more progressive members and has been a strong advocate for working families throughout his time in the legislature.

Besides his bachelor’s degree he also

obtained an M.B.A. from UIC and then earned a law degree from John Marshall Law School.

Noland’s platform and pledges: With a reputation for fighting for working families, Noland MIKE NOLAND pledges to create more jobs and increase the minimum wage; protect Social Security and Medicare; improve schools and make college more affordable; assure women’s access to healthcare; and guarantee equal pay for equal work.

Personal: Noland is a life-long resident of Illinois, spending the past 30 years in Elgin. Growing up in a central Illinois farming community, he began to shine shoes at the age of 8 to help his family.

Now a State Senator, Noland and his wife Veronica live on the northeast side of Elgin with their two children. He has placed his law career on hiatus to focus on his legislative duties.

BENSENVILLE — Azcoitia has served as principal at Horace Greeley Elementary School, a top-rated elementary school in Chicago Public Schools, since 2007. Prior to becoming principal at Greeley, he served as the school’s assistant principal for three years. During his time at Greeley, Azcoitia presided over an enrollment increase of more than 200 students and addressed achievement gaps within the school’s different instructional programs.

Rauner asked to ‘do the right thing’ as motion to override heads to House and low-income college students in Illinois benefit from MAP grants, which help to cover the cost of tuition at community colleges and universities statewide.

In Harmon’s district alone, 2,362 students were awarded more than $6.7 million in MAP grants during the 2015 fiscal year.

The Senate voted 37-17 to override Gov. Bruce Rauner’s

veto of Senate Bill 2043, which not only provides money for MAP grants for the 2015-16 academic year, but also includes money for community colleges and career-technical and adult education.

SB2043 passed both chambers in January, but the governor vetoed it in February. The motion to override now heads to the Illinois House for consideration.

Addison March 1 A 23-year-old Addison woman was arrested at around 3:40 a.m. and charged with domestic battery.

Feb. 28 • Nicholas A. Johnson, 25, of Carol Stream, was arrested at a local store in the 1000 block of N. Rohlwing Road at around 10:25 a.m. and charged with retail theft.

• Frank Miller, 59, of Northlake, was arrested near Lake and Villa at around 9:49 p.m. Police said Miller was observed swerving within the yellow median lines. During a traffic stop, it was deter-

mined that Miller was driving under the influence of alcohol, according to police. He was charged with DUI, failure to yield exiting from a private drive and improper lane usage.

Feb. 27 • Angela Nelson, 33, of Itasca, was arrested at a local store in the 1000 block of N. Rohlwing Road at around 8:23 p.m. and charged with retail theft.

Police said Nelson also had an outstanding warrant.

• Gino Panzeca, 44, of Addison, was arrested near Autumn Trail and Grove at around 7:42 p.m. Subsequent to a traffic stop, police said Panzeca drove away. He was stopped again and charged with fleeing and eluding, obstruction of justice and speeding.

Feb. 25 William Siebert, 32, of Hampshire, was arrested at a local food store the 500 block of W. Lake St. at around 5 p.m. and charged with retail theft and battery. Police said as

Siebert attempted to leave the store without paying, an altercation with a store employee reportedly took place.

Villa Park No date given Jason L. Datavs, 27, of Glendale Heights, was arrested at a tobacco store at around 1:30 a.m. and charged with burglary.

Feb. 27 • Tabitha M. Marozza, 29, of Villa Park, was arrested in the 200 block of N. Wisconsin at around 10:14 a.m. and charged with battery.

• Prateeq Ghatak, 21, of Aurora, was arrested near Roosevelt and Euclid at around 1:54 a.m. and charged with possession of cannabis.

Feb. 26 • A 43-year-old man from Villa Park was arrested in the 700 block of W. Roy at around 9:45 p.m. and charged with two counts of domestic battery and one count of damage to property.

• A 20-year-old man from Glendale Heights was arrested in the 100 block of W. North Ave. at around 12:14 a.m. and charged with two counts of domestic battery and unlawful consumption of alcohol.

• Jorge A. Espinosa-Ruiz, 25, of Cicero, was arrested near St. Charles and Highland at around 11:49 p.m. and charged with DUI and improper lane usage.

Feb. 23 • Charles P. Holzner, 32, of Elmhurst, was arrested in the 400 block of N. Addison between Jan. 4 and Jan. 28 and charged with violation of bail bond. The original complaint and arrest warrant was issued Feb. 23.

• Retail theft was reported at a local store at around 12:43 p.m. Police said unknown male suspects removed several boxes of whitening strips and Rogaine® from the shelves and left the store without paying for the items.

• A female juvenile from Villa Park was arrested at a local high school at around 12:05 p.m. and charged with disorderly conduct/fighting.

Watchdog duo: ‘It’s not their money; it’s the taxpayers’ money’

happened to be listening to The Joe Walsh Show one afternoon earlier in the year on WIND-AM 560.

The mere mention of Walsh’s name—he was a one-term GOP Congressman in the 8th Congressional District—usually draws ire from most liberals and admiration from most conservatives who’ve ever listened to his program.

Walsh has hosted events in Elmhurst—his most recent was held in January at the Diplomat West Banquet Hall on North Avenue—and whether you love him or loathe him, there is no gray area with Joe Walsh. You always know exactly where he stands on every issue.

One particular segment addressed a topic that most everyone who pays taxes can agree on, whether you lean conservative or liberal: How taxpayer dollars are spent by public officials not only in Springfield, but also in municipalities and school districts across the state.

Walsh interviewed Kirk Allen and John Kraft who, in 2010, started the Edgar County Watchdogs, which has a website: EdgarCountyWatchdogs. com. (Edgar County is located south of Danville and east of Charleston along the IllinoisIndiana border.). He also had the duo on his program last month.

Allen and Kraft described themselves on the program as “a couple of (military) vets” who were “lied to locally by our public bodies,” so they got together and decided to do something about it.

“We learned the laws that we could utilize to hold them accountable.”

A retired Air Force vet, Allen was serving as a township supervisor, emergency medical technician and a volunteer fire chief in the small community of Kansas, Ill. He described a situation in 2011 that first got the ball rolling to start the Edgar County Watchdogs -- an

Allen responded to a 9-1-1 call from a young parent, but when he got there, the child was fine.

“The child appeared blue because [the child was wearing] a blue nightie,” Allen told the Joe Walsh Show. “I called the dispatchers and said, ‘How come you weren’t on the phone with this person, giving infancy CPR? I go to the 9-1-1 meeting, addressed the Board and they assured me that all of our dispatchers were certified.

“That was a lie. They haven’t been for six years, no license for the 9-1-1 dispatch center.

“I began to look and it’s never stopped,” he said.

They have since uncovered hundreds of incidents of corruption throughout the state and their website gets tens of thousands of hits per month.

The site also has a hotline on which they field between five and 10 tips per day from throughout the state. They try to follow up on those tips as time permits.

“We need a staff to answer all the tips every day,” Allen told the show.

One thing is certain: Allen and Kraft aren’t afraid to confront public officials and governing bodies, which they’ve done frequently.

During the summer of 2014, Kraft even made a citizen’s arrest. He had the entire Clark County Park District board arrested at a board meeting because board members violated the Illinois Open Meetings Act by not allowing public comment at the meeting. (Clark County is located just south of Edgar County.) The sheriff arrived and told the board that Kraft had the right to make the arrest because board members had broken the law.

Closer to home, Allen and Kraft have been on the front lines regarding the more than $700,000 severance package that former College of DuPage President Dr. Robert Breuder was scheduled to receive after announcing in January, 2015, he was going to retire this March. However, the COD board ended up firing Breuder last October and denying him the severance package. Breuder filed a wrongful termination suit shortly thereafter.

Institute Day features program on inclusion at District 4, Addison Trail Led in part by author of book on multi-racial schools ADDISON — Teachers and support staff from four area school districts met at Addison Trail High School on Friday, March 4 for Institute Day. Activities focused on “Working Together for Inclusion, Equity and Excellence.”

Nearly 1,200 staff members from DuPage High School District 88 and the three elementary school districts that feed into Addison Trail and Willowbrook High Schools—Addison District 4, DuPage District 45, and Salt Creek District

48—began the day with Gary Howard introducing the topics of cultural competence and effectiveness in the practice of culturally responsive teaching and leadership. Howard is the author of We Can’t Teach What We Don’t Know: White Teachers, Multiracial Schools.

After the opening session, break-out sessions were led by District 88 facilitators. These sessions gave participants the opportunity to work in smaller groups to discuss diversity issues that occur in their individual schools. The participants returned to the auditorium for a closing session which focused on principles of culturally responsive teaching, including student feedback on what does and doesn’t work in the classroom.

Addison Trail Theatre is starting the celebration this spring by bringing back one of the school’s earliest plays to the stage.

From March 17 to 19, the school will present “Charley’s Aunt,” a farce performed in three acts.

“This show is full of mistaken identities, which is always fun to work with,” said Anna Jakubka, Addison Trail Theatre Director.

“The audience can look forward to pure entertainment and tons of laughs – and a lot of British accents.”

“Charley’s Aunt” is set in the late 1800s and tells the story of Charley Wykeham and his friend Jack Chesney, two college students at Oxford University. They fall in love with two young women, and Charley decides to introduce them to his rich aunt, Donna Lucia d’Alvadorez. But when Charley gets word his aunt has been delayed, he and Jack quickly devise a plan with another friend, Lord Fancourt Babberley (“Babbs”) – and hilarity ensues.

Senior Michael Bellino plays Charley and said he’s looking forward to his last performance at Addison Trail. He said the biggest challenge with “Charley’s Aunt” is the length of the play, but he has enjoyed getting

into character.

Senior Cab Callaway plays Jack and said audience members can expect to feel like they’re part of the show, as the play will be performed in the round (meaning guests will be placed on all four sides of the stage).

“It’s a smaller cast and stage area, so it allows for more natural movement and blocking,” Cab said. “The set design also is unique, and there’s a lot of interesting use of floor space.”

Junior Max Dziabis portrays Babbs and said it is his favorite role to date.

“He’s incredibly charismatic,” he said of Babbs. “Once he enters the picture, the story starts to revolve around him.”

Dziabis added those who come to see the show won’t be disappointed.

“It will be spectacular,” Dziabis said. “Audiences are guaranteed to have a good time enjoying a silly – yet witty – story.”

“Charley’s Aunt” will be performed March 17, 18 & 19 at 7 p.m., as well as 2 p.m. on Mar. 19 in the auditorium at Addison Trail High School, 213 No. Lombard Rd. ADDISON — Last week, students in Addison School District 4 joined millions of their peers across the country in celebrating the 16th annual National Education Association’s (NEA) Read Across America Day on Wednesday, March 2. Read Across America Day celebrates Dr. Seuss’s birthday and the joys of reading.

It was a week of fun events and celebration of reading, as students dressed up as their favorite Dr. Seuss characters, eating green eggs and ham, singing Seuss songs, reading as well as being read to.

Volunteers from DeVry University visited Ardmore, Army Trail, Lake Park, and Stone Schools, as part of DeVry’s nationwide effort to read to 10,000 students on Wednesday. The visitors brought Dr. Seuss books, which they read and then donated to 39 different classrooms.

Last week, the Independent learned that Richard Marshall Cronin, M.D. of Elmhurst had passed away peacefully on the evening of Saturday, February 27, 2016, surrounded by his wife Claire, his nine children, RICHARD M. CRONIN, M.D. and his 38 grandchildren.

A solid legacy began in Oak Park Born in 1926 in Oak Park, he was raised in River Forest by his parents, Dr. John J. Cronin and Rose Ann Fox Cronin, along with his three brothers, Dr. John J. Jr., Thomas, and Robert, all of whom preceded him in death. Dr. Cronin was a scholar athlete at Fenwick High School, graduating in 1944, and went on to study PreMed at the University of Notre Dame, where he also earned a monogram letter in football. He graduated in 1946.

He turned down an offer to play professional football, choosing instead to attend Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine, where he graduated in 1950 and became an Orthopaedic Surgeon. Dr. Cronin completed his residency at the University of Illinois’ Research and Education Hospital in Chicago. He practiced in Elmhurst and at Loyola for 55 years.

In 1954, Dr. Cronin enlisted in the Air Force and worked as an orthepedic surgery resident at the Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul. He began his medical practice in Oak Park, seeing patients at Elmhurst Memorial,

St. Anne’s and Loretto Hospitals. In 1960, the Cronins moved to Elmhurst.

In the early 60s, he and a group of 10 doctors purchased the land at Palmer and Kenilworth in Elmhurst, where they built a medical office building that still stands. In 1986, Dr. Cronin bought out the other doctors and partners and took over full ownership of the building. It became not only an office but also the central campaign office for those who went on to seek political office like son Dan. Heisman winner credits Cronin with saving his career Proud of his ties to Notre Dame, Dr. Cronin became a specialist for injuries suffered by athletes -- in a way, he was one of the first-ever doctors of “sports medicine” as it is known today. A great accomplishment that made him proud was working on Notre Dame quarterback John Huarte.

While playing for the Fighting Irish, Huarte was told by doctors in South Bend he would need surgery after separating his shoulder. Legendary Notre Dame coach Ara Parseghian urged Huarte to drive into Chicago to see Dr. Cronin,

just to make sure the surgery was really necessary -- turns out it wasn’t!

According to Parseghian, Dr. Cronin felt the shoulder would heal itself with rest, so they decided to “let Mother Nature handle it” and it apparently worked out. Huarte, of course, went on to not only win the Heisman Trophy, but also to play in the NFL, including a stint with the Chicago Bears.

He always credited Dr. Cronin for “saving his career.”

Lots of children and grandchildren, lots of success Dr. and Mrs. Cronin boast a long list of successful children, who range in occupation from doctors to lawyers to accountants to pilots to architects and more. At the top of that list is Dan Cronin, former state Senator, now serving as DuPage County Board Chairman – a position considered close to being a governor, due to the size of the County. Also among the high-profile children of Dr. Cronin is daughter Cindy Cronin Cahill, who served as Elmhurst City Treasurer back in the 1980s.

Addison Art Guild welcomes Arlene Tilghman ADDISON — On Thursday, March 10 at 7:30 p.m., the Addison Art Guild will host Arlene Tilghman as the speaker at its next meeting at Addison Village Hall, One Friendship Plaza, room 1301. Her program will be

on the Art of Byzantine Iconography.

The format will include a brief history of icons in regard to their beginning and use in the church, the meaning of icons and what they represent, and the technique of icon painting from the early ancestors to our present contemporary style. The presentation will also include a small exhibit of various samples of her icon

work on display for viewing.

Arlene is a professional artist whose current specialty is in Byzantine Iconography. An artist for more than 45 years, Arlene began her early art career in oil painting and after 20 years of working in the medium, the prompting of her Orthodox parish priest led her into the world of iconography; sacred art in the Orthodox Church. She studied with several local Master Iconographers as well as abroad in Moscow, Jerusalem, and Italy.

Her icon work graces many churches and homes across the U.S., including her own Orthodox parish, Holy Trinity Orthodox Cathedral, built in 1904 by Lewis Sullivan, located on Divi-

sion and Leavitt Streets in Chicago.

When not doing iconography, Arlene draws and sketches a myriad of subjects including portraits, wildlife, scenes, and ancient statues in pen, pencil, or colored pencil; and creates seascapes, wildlife, portraits and landscapes in soft pastels. In May of 2015, Arlene spent two weeks at the Accademia d’Arte in Florence, Italy, attending a pastels workshop, which also incorporated museum visits.

Addison Trail boys basketball team wraps up season Grygo named to all-WSC Gold Division team

The Addison Trail boys basketball team saw its 2015-2016 season come to a close after a 62-48 loss to District 88 neighbor Willowbrook in the quarterfinals of the Class 4A Benet Academy regional in Lisle.

“It was not a good performance for us,” said Addison Trail coach Brendan Lyons.

The teams had split the two regularseason conference meetings.

Addison Trail led the playoff game by two at halftime and was up by six points late in the third quarter.

“We fell apart in the fourth quarter,” said Lyons. “They started knocking down shots and we turned the ball over.”

Addison Trail had 21 turnovers in the contest.

“We couldn’t get anything going,” said Lyons. “We led 38-32 at one point and they closed the game on a 30-10 run. We didn’t like going out like that.”

Jack Kalbas led the Blazers with 15 points. Eric Grygo added eight points and 14 rebounds.

“Eric was scoring consistently for us early and then we couldn’t get him the ball,” said Lyons. “They picked up their pressure game and we turned the ball over. It was tough getting the ball inside to him.”

The Blazers finished the season with a 14-15 record.

Willowbrook boys basketball team splits playoff games Degnan advances in 3-point contest; Zabran girls basketball team’s leading scorer

The Willowbrook boys basketball team split a pair of recent games at the Class 4A Benet Academy regional in Lisle.

Willowbrook opened the playoffs with a 63-48 win over District 88 neighbor Addison Trail. It was the third meeting of the season between the two teams (Willowbrook won two of those contests).

Willowbrook was the No. 17 seed in the Class 4A East Aurora sectional, while Addison Trail was the No. 16 seed.

The Warriors then dropped a 56-46 decision to No. 1 seed Benet Academy. Ethan Schuemer led Willowbrook with 12 points. Matt Meyers added nine points.

Degnan advances At the Benet Academy regional Willowbrook’s Billy Degnan advanced to the sectional round of the Class 4A state 3-point shooting contest. Degnan will compete this week at the East Aurora sectional for a chance to go to the state finals in Peoria next week.

Zabran leads Willowbrook girls basketball Josie Zabran was the Willowbrook girls basketball team’s leading scorer this season at 14.0 points per game.

Zabran also led the team in rebounds at 9.3 per game (4.5 offensive rebounds per game). She also had 29 steals.

Danielle Velasquez averaged 9.2 points per game for the Warriors to go with 3.9 rebounds, 2.6 assists (60 total assists) and 1.9 steals (43 steals) per game.

Alyssa Spada also averaged 9.2 points to go with 4.7 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game. Spada had 22 steals as well.

Kaylin Konrath averaged 8.1 points per game and 7.3 rebounds to go with 21 steals. Grace Chantos averaged 2.6 rebounds and 2.8 assists (66 total assists), while logging 21 steals.

Zabran shot 47 percent from the field, while Konrath shot 42 percent.

Velasquez led the team in 3-pointers made with 22. Spada had 12 threepointers and shot 66 percent from the free-throw line. Velasquez shot 65 percent from the free-throw line (76 made free throws), while Zabran shot 61 percent rom the free-throw line (82 made free throws).

Velasquez led the team in charges taken with 27 and deflections with 33. Zabran logged 11 double-double games (double figures in two statistical categories), while Milena Sogura led the team in blocked shots with 13.

Addison Trail graduates seven seniors in Grygo, Ryan Zygowicz, Zach Novak, Nick Conrad, Nick Fugarino, Mike Tkaczyk and Jon Gonzalez. Five of the seniors were with the program all four years.

“Our seven seniors all were all-academic selections,” said Lyons. “Everybody had a GPA of 3.8 or better. We’re losing a great group of players.”

Grygo also earned all-West Suburban Conference Gold Division honors.

“This is a group of players that had a lot of success for us,” said Lyons.

“They won more than 60 games in their four years here and continued to set the bar higher. We always have talked about continuing to rise. This is three years in a row with double-digit victories. Hopefully the guys coming back and the guys coming up will continue to step up and continue on an upward trend. The bar has been set higher for the future classes. We’ve turned the corner here and now it’s the challenge of the seniors in each group to surpass what has been set before them.”

Lyons noted the program’s lower levels had productive years as well.

“Our lower levels were competitive this year,” he said. “What I like seeing is guys are getting better. Our sophomore team faced some struggles and came back and beat some good teams.

I also liked what I saw at the freshman level. We kept 28 kids, which is good to see. Now we’ll see who puts in the work over the summer and what that translates into.”

The Addison Trail boys basketball team will be well-represented in the state 3-point shooting contest at the Class 4A East Aurora sectional.

The Blazers advanced three competitors to the sectional level out of the recent Class 4A Benet Academy regional in Lisle.

Stevan Jones, Jack Kalbas and Bobby Daniels all will compete in the sectional portion of the Class 4A state 3-point shooting contest this week at East Aurora where berths in the state finals in Peoria will be on the line.

Fenton boys basketball The Fenton boys basketball team concluded its season after a 70-67 loss to Chicago Schurz in quarterfinal action of the Class 4A Chicago Whitney Young regional.

Fenton was the No. 20 seed in the

Class 4A Riverside-Brookfield sectional, while Schurz was the No. 13 seed. Schurz then lost 72-42 to No. 4 seed Whitney Young in the semifinals.

Whitney Young went on to win the regional title.

Addison Trail boys track The Addison Trail boys track team won a recent triangular meet at Glenbard North.

Addison Trail won with 81 points.

Glenbard North was second with 60 points, while Streamwood was third with 27 points.

Sophomore Marco Flores won the 800 run, while senior Darius Perez won the 400 dash. Senior Stefano Favuzzi won the 200 dash.

Junior Chris Purdy won the long jump, while junior Demetrio Cervantes won the 1,600 run.

Addison Trail also was successful in the relays. The Blazers won the 3,200 relay. That team featured Flores, Nick Czorniak, Demetrio Cervantes and Julio Cervantes.

The Blazers also won the 1,600 relay with team members Flores, Darius Perez, Jose Chavez and Ryan Baig.

IC Catholic Prep’s Lyles wins three awards Four-year manager Juan Navarro honored as well

IC Catholic Prep boys basketball player Will Lyles had himself a productive senior season.

And that production was rewarded with a trio of recent honors. Lyles was named to the all-Metro Suburban Conference West Division team. In addition, Lyles was the recipient of the team’s Glue Guy Award and the Hustle Award.

“Will has a big ceiling for his potential,” said IC Catholic Prep coach TJ Tyrrell. “I would say he was our most improved player. He showed big improvement from the beginning to the end of the year in addition to the growth he’s had since freshmen year. He’s going to continue to grow and will be a good player wherever he decides to play next year.”

The Glue Guy Award is voted on by the IC Catholic Prep players, while the Hustle Award is given based on a vote of the coaching staff. “The glue guy holds the team together and does all the little things,” said Tyrrell. “You don’t ask much of him because he does it already.

The kids voted on the hustle award. He probably won every sprint we ran and sometimes he would lap guys because he would go so hard.”

IC Catholic Prep finished the year 13-15 overall and ended 3-9 in conference play. The Knights defeated Lisle in the regional semifinals and lost to top seed Aurora Christian in the regional title game.

“Lisle was a fun game for us,” said Tyrrell. “The kids played great. They locked down and battled and pulled out the win. We got down early against Aurora Christian and couldn’t battle back. We didn’t play as well as I had hoped.”

Tyrrell labeled the season “up and down.”

“That’s how it ended in the playoffs,” he said. “We needed to be more consistent. Still, we saw a lot of encouraging things.”

Tyrrell noted the Knights won the Coal City Thanksgiving tournament and also won the IC-Westmont Christmas tournament.

“We also made it to our fifth regional title game in a row,” he said.

Tyrrell also lauded the program’s underlevel teams. The sophomore team went 26-2 and won the St. Laurence tournament, while the freshman team went 22-4 and won the Lisle tournament.

“We have a lot to be proud of,” said Tyrrell.

Tyrrell cited strong end-ofseason play by Austin Reed and Matt Sutton among others.

“Austin was in the talk for all-conference,” he noted. “He came on strong in the second half of the season. He’s a junior who we expect big things from.

Matt Sutton also came on strong and played better.”

Sophomores Luke Ricobene and Amari Reed were brought up for the playoffs. “Luke and Amari got a little experience and that will help them for next season,” the coach said.

The Knights lose seniors Angel Ramirez, Garrett Cheng, Jack Ricobene and Lyles.

“We’re thankful for our seniors,” said Tyrrell. “They were dedicated to the program over the years.”

Tyrrell also praised the contributions of senior team manager Juan Navarro. “We must say thank-you to Juan Navarro,” he said. “He was at practice and helped out in all the games. He has been with the program for four years and has been an integral part of a successful program. The guys like him. A position like that doesn’t get a lot of glory. It’s a hard job. Practices get long.

The season gets long. It’s rare to have someone stay all four years. Juan did that and was a big part of the team.”

Tyrrell noted Navarro’s brother, Marco, will join the varsity next season. He was the sophomore team manager this year.

With talented players returning and a strong underclass system, Tyrrell is looking forward to the 2016-2017 season.

“We feel good about the future,” he said. “It’s always tough because you don’t want to lose your last game of the season and especially in the regional championship because it takes so long to get there. Our juniors have a year of experience on the varsity and hopefully the sophomores can come up with their energy and enthusiasm and we will do some big things next year.”

veryone looks forward to vacation. For me, the days (weeks, months even) leading up to a 7-day hiatus are filled with ever-increasing amounts of packing-related frenzy, many of which are unneeded and even a little bit whacko. But I do them anyway.

The process starts with organization. Not of the suitcase, but of the every closet, drawer, nook and cranny in the house, vehicle and perhaps even the garage.

I start with clothing. Each garment is assessed for wearability, size and cleanliness.

If something is stained or outgrown, it is discarded. I get rid of heaps of items belonging to my husband and kids. When I get to my closet, however, I struggle with abandonment issues. I keep things I haven’t worn in years because you never know when you might need a brown checkered blazer and it’s a real possibility that shoulder pads might come back in style someday.

One space in particular gets a considerable amount of my time and attention: the swim-

suit drawer. I try on every suit I’ve owned since the 1990s because why toss a perfectly good bikini when it can sit in your drawer for all of posterity? The maternity suits could probably go at this point, but they bring back pleasant memories and throwing them out would seem cruel and uncaring.

Moving to the entry closet: can a girl ever own too many coats (or jackets as the case may be)? Rhetorical question.

I wonder how many I should take for the trip. No need to bring just one when four will do. Maybe better make that five.

Unlike many women, I don’t often give a lot of thought to shoes. I like mine comfortable and casual. I wear a couple different pairs. Until vacation.

Then I feel the need to wobble on heels – on the beach – in multiple colors and styles.

I review my purses and bags and don’t recall purchasing at least half of them. Perhaps they’ve started to self-multiply. Ever gotten rid of a purse just because you don’t use it anymore? Me neither. On my latest audit, I was thorough and inspected the contents of each bag. I found sunscreen and a pack of crackers in one. Great! Unfortunately both were dated 2009. I wonder what 7-year-old crackers would taste like? My husband nearly found out. He fetched the wrapped cracker package from the garbage thinking they’d been tossed accidently by one of the kids. Luckily I caught him in time.

Although I have more swimsuits than days of vacation, when my household reorganization is complete I do the obvious. I shop.

Online. Incessantly, because the items in my closet and drawers, while perfectly fine for regular days at home, are not new and somehow I think I need something new to wear

on vacation.

The same goes for my husband and kids. I feel the urge to buy them sandals, sunglasses and beachwear. I search for coupon codes and free shipping deals and the online shopping continues for days and even though I start out early I delay any purchases until the last minute so I end up spending extra on overnight shipping anyway.

Shopping complete, it is time to get the suitcases. But not to pack. Not yet. The crescendo continues to build. My husband and I take the suitcases out to the vehicle to do a dry run. We know space is at a premium and if left to the last moment before our departure we could realize we have more suitcases than cargo space and would be forced to reassess our priorities and leave one of the kids at home.

I take packing to a whole new level – and that’s before I put one T-shirt into a suitcase.

Which I do get to, eventually, by the way. But usually not until late – on the night before the morning we’re scheduled to leave.

Forest Preserve District, County to collaborate on projects Leveraging staff resources, technical expertise will save money, boost efficiency WHEATON — The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County approved an intergovernmental agreement at its March 1 meeting, which authorizes the District to partner with DuPage County on special projects. The agreement is expected to improve efficiencies and save taxpayers money.

The agreement is expected to be considered for approval by the DuPage County Board on March 8.

Forest Preserve District of DuPage County President Joe Cantore said the agreement between the two agencies was borne out of a commitment to explore cost-saving partnerships, identify efficiencies and reduce costs that the Forest Preserve Board of Commissioners and County Board share.

“This is a powerful tool that will allow the Forest Preserve District and County to serve our constituents in a more efficient and more effective way,” he said. “This provides the outline to allow us to move forward and will serve as a model for other agencies in DuPage County and beyond.”

“This agreement provides a tremendous amount of value to the Information Technology department,” he said. “We’ll be able to partner with DuPage County on projects, initiatives, software and hardware platforms, and short- and longterm planning in order to better serve the people of DuPage County.”

Veterans have greater access to special courts under new proposal SPRINGFIELD — A bill to increase the number of Veterans Courts in Illinois has cleared it first hurdle. House Bill 5003 passed out of committee unanimously on Tuesday, Mar. 1.

Veterans Courts focus directly on the needs of former and current members of the armed forces. Currently, there are 12 Veterans Court programs in Illinois, according to State

Representative Christine Winger (R-Wood Dale). All are limited to veterans with nonviolent records who are struggling with substance abuse or mental health issues. Veterans who qualify and successfully comply with court orders get the treatment they need and can have criminal charges dismissed.

As of 2014, problem-solving courts including Veteran Treat-

ment Courts kept 1,200 offenders out of prison, saving the state of Illinois nearly $20 million, according to Winger.

The bill requires the Chief Judge of each judicial circuit to establish a Veterans’ and Service members’ Court program.

The legislation specifies that the Chief Judge of each circuit has the discretion to decide the format of the program, whether it’s a separate court or a prob-

lem solving court, including but not limited to a drug court or mental health court.

“Men and women who have bravely served our country deserve a chance to get their lives back together,” explained Winger. “Many are in their current situation because they were suffering from the effects of their military service.”

House Bill 5003 awaits a vote on the House floor.
