The DuPage County Election Commission has announced a partnership with Scytl to implement a new scalable Election Night Reporting (ENR) system on the Commission website.

The new system provides each user the ability to customize their viewing experience to fit the size of any viewing screen and the ability to select “My Favorite Races” to track.

Visitors will also have access to a graphical view of in-depth county results, including a breakdown of votes received by contest, candidate, and Precinct. Downloadable reports, custom filtering, and maps illustrating Precincts reporting, voter turnout, and results are also available.

The Commission will begin to upload results to the new page at approximately 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 20, election night. Updates will occur every 15 minutes throughout the night until all polling locations have reported.

Additionally, voters will have access to archived election results for each DuPage County election through 2011. Additional results will be made available following the March Primary Election.

Fenton girls basketball team wraps up successful season Bison quadruple conference win total

It was quite the turnaround for the Fenton girls basketball team this season under firstyear head coach Dave Mello.

The Bison finished 9-17 overall and ended 4-8 and in fourth place in the six-team Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division. More importantly, Fenton quadrupled its win total in the conference from the previous three seasons where it was a combined 0-36 in MSC Blue play.

Fenton’s nine wins were its most since the 2013-2014 season.

Individually, the news was just as good.

Amari Benbow led the Bison at 12.2 points per game and also was tops in rebounding at 8.9 per contest. She also led the team in assists at 4.7 per game. Ashley Lira and Joni Lucas each averaged 0.5 blocks per game.

Ashley Milano led the team with 33 threepointers. Julia Kaspari hit 32 threes, while Jamie Minard and Joni Lucas each had 28 threes. Mackenzie Miller led the team with six charges taken.

Fenton finished the season with 250 made 3s, which ranks seventh all-time in IHSA single-season history.

Benbow and Lira were all-MSC Blue selections.

“The biggest strength of this team is that they were a team,” Mello said. “They really enjoyed being around each other every day.

They are each other’s biggest fans.”

Mello said his players took to his teachings throughout the season, another key to the program’s advancement in such a short amount of time. “They improved at running our system,” he said. “At the beginning it was foreign to them. A couple girls got it right away, then a couple more. By the end of the season, it was something great to watch.

“I always will remember this team for buying into what we were selling. We asked them to run a system they had no idea about and we asked them to believe that they could be successful. They did that and more.

Secondly, I always will remember how much they enjoyed playing for one another.

They didn’t worry about who was doing the scoring, they celebrated for that girls like it was them who had just scored. There are so many moments on film where the bench is going absolutely crazy for something that

happened on the court. It didn’t matter if it was the first quarter or the final minutes of the game.”

Mello said another root cause for the quick program progress was the team’s culture.

“It was the culture the girls established, toughness, hard work, integrity and selflessness,” he said. “They held each other accountable. It didn’t have to always come from the coaches.”

Mello also was thrilled the amount of different contributions the team received throughout the season and particularly over the latter part of the schedule. “It absolutely was a team effort,” he said. “The last three weeks of the regular season we dressed 19 girls and they all got rotations. In our final regular-season game vs. Elmwood Park, 15 of the 19 scored. Any girl who was healthy enough to dress got playing time.”

Mello added the memories that stick out in his mind are too many to list, through there are a few that stand out, he noted. Fenton trailed Chicago Westinghouse 24-2 after missing its first 22 threes. “And before you know it we are leading,” he said.

Fenton also trailed by 19 against Timothy Christian. “We were down against a really good Timothy Christian team,” Mello explained. “We were sticking to our plan

and eventually took the lead before faltering late.”

Mello terms the team’s regional game against Hoffman Estates as “the lasting moment. “Nothing would fall in the first quarter, we only had four free throws,” he said. “We started to score but still were down by 15 with just over four minutes to go in the game. The girls looked at each other and said, ‘It’s only five shots.’ Even down 10 with 2:30 remaining, not once did they think we were done. And wouldn’t you know it, we had one last chance to tie it at the end.

It’s a cliché, but they never ever gave up.”

Mello said there is plenty to be excited about the future of the program. “It’s going to be an amazing journey,” he said. “We return 13 of the 19 girls. We actually will have a summer camp, summer league and summer shootouts together. They will be familiar with the system. They are very excited to continue what we started this season and not let us take a step back. The culture has been set and it’s up to all of us to continue building. We were at the 3-point shooting contest at Lake Park before the sectional final and we were talking about how great it is going to be to play in that game one day soon.”

Fenton High School releases 2017-18 First Semester Honor Roll Fenton Community High School has named 882 students to the first semester honor roll for the 2017-18 school year, based on their exemplary academic performance.

Students achieving a 3.5 or higher are recognized with High Honors and students achieving a 3.0 – 3.4999 grade point average are recognized with Honors.

Winter Olympics – big thrills and big air The Winter Olympics officially ended Feb. 25. Sigh. It’s been a good (sleigh) ride.

If you’re like me, the Winter Games provide opportunities to develop an interest in and become an expert on sports not typically televised during prime time.

Let’s start with curling, which as far as I can decipher has nothing to do with anything curly, especially hair.

It involves large round granite disks – called stones – that slide across the ice toward a target. It’s sort of a cross between bowling and shuffleboard, but with brooms and on ice.

I’ve watched some curling matches (are they called matches?) and still don’t understand the intricacies of the game. I have been intrigued and drawn in by the propensity of players to yell unique – and dare I say odd – phrases

during the course of the “slideshow.”

I’m not sure if they are shouting at each other, their opponents or the stones. Either way, their outcries are entertaining not to mention loud.

A sport with a name like skeleton has to be dangerous. And it is. Skeleton racing involves plummeting headfirst down a steep and treacherous ribbon of polished ice on a tiny sled at speeds over 80 miles per hour. Racers do wear

cool looking helmets, so there’s some amount of comfort in that.

Equally thrilling, the luge is like the skeleton except backwards. Riders hurl themselves down a slippery ice track, feet first and face up, one or two persons to a sled. The two-person model requires one racer to lie atop the other in a decidedly awkward pile-up of muscles and spandex. Awkwardness aside, it still looks dangerous. I think I’d take a pass – better make that a double pass for doubles luge (which is only available for men at this point anyway).

Bobsleighing (the official Olympic term) has one, two and four-person events. The one-person race is known as the monobob, which like curling has nothing to do with hair.

Bob sledders ride down a winding, narrow and icy track in brightly colored go-karts powered by gravity on steroids (the sleds, not athletes). The ride looks to be kidney jarring in an extreme way.

But hey, if the outcome is a gold medal maybe a little trauma to your internal organs is the price you pay.

New this year, big air is exactly as its name implies. Athletes fly down a ski ramp that curls at the end and shoots snowboarders into the sky to heights formerly known only to people wearing parachutes. Is big air dangerous?

Do snowboarders fly?

The Winter Olympics hosts a total of 15 sports and is basically a junior version of the Summer Games, which boast an impressive 42. This is further compounded by the fact that just one summer category, called “athletics” is comprised of 47 different track and field events and could practically qualify as an Olympics on its own.

To increase the fairness quotient, especially for those of us suffering living in colder climates, I propose adding new Winter Olympic sports, with events potentially even more dangerous and exhilarating than skeleton or big air.

Notoriously perilous and known for its edge-of-your-seat hysteria, ice fishing is a prevalent reality for many cold-climate folks. Ice fisher-people have actually been angling for years to get their chance at Olympic gold.

If this occurs, fisher-athletes would be required to test clean for various drugs and steroids. Thankfully, beer would not be on the list of banned substances.

Other sports that might be medal-worthy include passing a snowplow on black ice during a snowstorm at rush hour, pushing a full shopping cart through four inches of newly fallen snow across the official Olympic parking lot, snow shoveling the front steps with a non-motorized metal shovel while wearing choppers and finally, the most obvious, Zamboni speed driving.

The Winter Olympics are great as is, but they could be even better with increased competitive options. And more medals, duh. I’m sure we can come up with even more super-extreme sporty ideas. We’ve got four years to think about it.

Lake Park 5th grade creates interactive wax museum Mrs. Poremba’s and Mrs. Groth’s 5th grade classes researched, wrote scripts, created posters, and wore costumes to create a biographical interactive wax museum at Lake Park School on Wednesday, Feb. 21.

Each student selected an influential historical character to portray—including George Washington, Harriet Tubman, Ben Franklin, Clara Barton, Sojourner Truth, Pocahontas, and Francis Scott Key. The students studied their characters and created posters for displaying in the

museum.

In order to give the effect of a wax museum, each student also worked to develop a still pose that they would be able to hold while waiting for visitors to approach. Each student had a “Press Here to see me come to life” button that visitors could touch in order to make that character share information.

Parents, teachers, and Lake Park students from the lower grades enjoyed visiting the museum and learning history in an interactive setting.

This Lake Park 5th grader stands very still as a wax museum statue before being “brought to life” as Patrick Henry, who gave the famous “Give me liberty or give me death” speech.

DuPage County and SCARCE are now accepting project proposals from local high school students for the 12th annual Sustainable Design Challenge. Scheduled for Tuesday, April 17, the Sustainable Design Challenge encourages students to construct building and landscape models using environmental and water-friendly design practices.

“This really is a fun event every year at the County,” said DuPage County Stormwater Management Committee Chairman Jim Zay. “Not only do we learn from these students about innovative design techniques, but we are also able to see how much the building models progress year over year. At this point, I don’t doubt some of the designs will one day be implemented.”

In addition to inspiring students to explore careers in urban planning, architecture and engineering, the competition promotes environmental and stormwater education within Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) curriculum in local high schools.

SCARCE Founder and Executive Director Kay McKeen emphasizes the importance of STEM education both in and out of the classroom.

“It’s great that students are receiving STEM education in the classroom, at all ages,” said McKeen. “However, I think relating it to the real world in such a handson manner is what helps grow students’ passion for STEM fields and industries.”

All DuPage County high schools are encouraged to participate. Frequent competitors include students from Wheaton Warrenville South (Wheaton), Wheaton North, Naperville North, Glenbard South

(Glen Ellyn), Glenbard East (Lombard), Addison Trail, College Preparatory School of America (Lombard), Neuqua Valley (Naperville), York High School (Elmhurst), Willowbrook (Villa Park), Downers Grove North, Downers Grove South, Hinsdale Central, Hinsdale South (Darien) and Lake Park (Roselle) high schools.

Willowbrook boys basketball team heads into playoffs on high note Warriors defeat York in WSC crossover game

The Willowbrook boys basketball team brought some hard-earned momentum into this week’s Class 4A playoffs.

The Warriors wrapped up the regular season with a victory over York in the second-place game in the West Suburban Conference annual crossover series.

The win pushed Willowbrook to 23-5 overall and gave it its fourth win a row heading into the regional.

Willowbrook finished second in the WSC Gold Division with a 9-3 record, behind league-champion Hinsdale South.

Stubblefield has been with the varsity squad since being called up seven or eight games ago, Perkins said.

Perkins noted the root cause of the recent winning streak has varied.

“Every game is something different,” he said. “We are doing a good job of moving the ball and playing together on the offensive end of the floor. We’re scrappy and we play hard on the defensive end. I like where we are at and hopefully we can sustain that and keep going in the playoffs.”

Sitting at 23-5 and the No. 5 seed in the sectional, Perkins said his squad has plenty of motivation.

“The kids are very motivated,” he said. “Mostly the whole lineup experienced what it was like last year to have an early exit from the playoffs. Hopefully they have a chip on their shoulder.”

Perkins added he’s confident his team is battle-tested based on its usual tough schedule inside and outside the WSC Gold.

“Our schedule and our conference play is pretty solid,” the coach said.

“It should have us ready for what we are going to see in the playoffs. It comes down to us keeping our composure and executing on both ends of the floor.”

And Perkins likes the fact his team continues to receive help from many sources. “It’s a different person every game,” he said. “It depends on who has the hot hand, but we like that it’s different guys each game.”

Willowbrook opened play in the Class 4A Hinsdale South regional against either No. 21 seed Lake Park or No. 11 Metea Valley earlier this week. If Willowbrook won its regional semifinal game it either will play host and No. 4 seed Hinsdale South, No. 13 DeKalb or No. 20 West Chicago Friday for the regional title in Darien. The winner heads to the Class 4A Glenbard East sectional next week.

Quite a year for Timothy Christian girls basketball team Trojans break 20-win mark and advance to sectional championship game

The Timothy Christian girls’ basketball team turned up the jets and then some once the calendar turned to 2018.

From January forward coming back from the school’s Renew term break, the Trojans lost only two games and finished the season with a 20-10 record.

“I love the sound of that,” said Timothy Christian coach Michele Strube.

The Trojans won a Class 2A regional title and advanced all the way to a Class 2A sectional title game where they lost to Chicago Harlan.

Timothy also finished 8-4 in Metro Suburban Conference Red Division play.

Timothy’s 20 wins are the most since Strube’s second season at the helm where the team went 15-13 after going 5-22 the previous year. Last year, the Trojans finished 13-15 for a second year in a row.

“I’m beyond thrilled,” said Strube, who coaches the team with her husband, Jon Strube. “It was a great end to our season.

We played fantastic against bigger teams.

The girls proved to themselves that they

have potential and talent. All they had to do was believe in themselves. They just had to go out there and lay it all on the court. They brought it on the court every night. And if they did that I told them they would be hard to stop.”

Timothy loses only seniors Olivia Schuringa and Emily DeBoer from this year’s team.

“It’s going to be hard losing Olivia and Emily,” said Strube. “Olivia has been consistent and strong for us all year and Emily DeBoer really came on the last three weeks. That was fun to see from her. We will have a different dynamic next year.

It’s going to be hard losing those two, but we are going to be able to fill in what we are losing with some sophomores.”

Freshmen Hannah Schuringa and Sureya Alex both played key roles for the Trojans this season. “Hannah will be a beautiful player,” said Strube. “She will break records. Sureya also had a great season.

Both of them stepped right in this season and helped us.”

Two other freshmen, Sarah Carstensen and Greta Hookstra, also were brought up to the varsity at the tail end of the season and will provide further reinforcements next season, Strube noted.

The stellar results this season did not surprise Strube. “Jon and I always hoped

with this group,” she said. “We have really great potential. It took a lot of work and constant coaching and instruction. But the girls work so hard and listen so well. They trust us and believe in us and they kept working and working. I love the hard work and all the time they put in over the last four months. There were times when we were going six days a week. I couldn’t be prouder of this group. All their hard work showed on the court. It stinks when you lose by one or two points. There are some games from the beginning of the season that we would like to play again because we played so well the last month of the season.

“We always knew there was potential here. It’s fun to see it finally show on the court. These are amazing young women who come from fabulous families. It’s nice that it all came out on the court. They showed their talent.”

Strube was impressed with how the team played in the regional title game against Lisle.

“I always love defense and it’s fun to see the different defenses we played and see them pay off,” she said. “We held Lisle’s big scorer to seven points. She had 30 points against Westmont. She didn’t make one basket against us, it was all free throws. We lost to Lisle in overtime last

year and to do what we did on the court against them was a great moment for the girls.”

Strube noted Heidi Westra and Abby Carstensen provided the defensive help in the Lisle game. “That girl was 5-4 and Heidi is 6-2 and Abby is 5-4 so we put height and speed on her and it worked,” she explained.

Strube tipped her hat to Chicago Harlan, which won the sectional title and went on to place second in the state in Class 2A. “Harlan was fabulous,” she said. “I’m not ashamed of how we played against them. We played the best we probably could. We were nervous and turned the ball over 26 times. You cannot do that in the sectional championship game. They had four players in double figures. They were a good team. Their coach knew what to do to us. They saw us play in the previous game and Olivia had 21 points and Emily had 16 points. Against Harlan it was three and five points. He shut them down.”

Strube is already looking forward to what is ahead. “We can come back and do good things,” she said. “We saw that against Harlan. What happened this season is a great sign for our future.”

Addison Trail boys basketball team wraps up regular season AT-Willowbrook boys swimming 200 relay team third at sectional; Burns seventh in 50

The Addison Trail boys basketball team concluded its regular season with a recent 58-57 loss to Lyons Township as part of the West Suburban Conference crossover series.

It was Addison Trail’s third onepoint loss of the season to a WSC

team. Addison Trail also lost 44-43 to Downers Grove South in WSC Gold Division play and 50-49 to Leyden in another Gold game. Addison Trail’s lone conference win this season came against eventual conference champion Hinsdale South (52-50).

The Blazers opened up Class 4A postseason play earlier this year at their own Class 4A Addison Trail regional against Downers Grove South.

Downers South was the No. 15 seed in the sectional, while Addison Trail was the No. 17 seed. If the Blazers won that game they faced No. 2 sectional seed Benet Academy this past

Tuesday.

Freshman Kyle Haake was 12th in the 200 with a time of 1:54.92.

Zimmerman placed 12th in the 200 IM with a time of 2:08.44. Thomas Holmes was 18th at 2:19.33.

Burns placed seventh in the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.50, while Jacob Grygo was 11th in the 50 with a time of 23.63.

Phillip Campbell was 16th in the diving competition with 173.15 points.

Thompson finished 14th in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:00.85. Salvatore Ciaccio was 18th in 1:04.05.

Burns tied for ninth in the 100 at 50.09, while Mikey Strycharz was 12th at 51.05. Haake took 10th in the

500 with a time of 5:14.20. Sean Pienkos was 18th at 5:44.70.

AT-Willowbrook was third in the 200 relay with a time of 1:30.56.

State-qualifying time was 1:27.71.

That team included Zimmerman, Grygo, Strycharz and Burns.

Zimmerman was 11th in the backstroke with a time of 59.07, while Thompson was 12th in 59.79.

Nichols finished 18th in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:08.35.

AT-Willowbrook was seventh in the 400 relay with a time of 3:29.56 with Jack Wentworth, Lucas Walsh, Strycharz and Grygo.

The win was IC Catholic Prep’s third regional crown under coach TJ Tyrrell. This was the Knights seventh regional-championship game appearance in a row, the past six coming under Tyrrell’s direction.

“It was a huge win,” said Tyrrell. “It felt good to avenge the loss to them earlier in the season and to walk away with the hardware.”

IC Catholic Prep lost at Timothy Christian earlier in the season. “The last time we played them it was at their home gym and we had a very

slow start,” said Tyrrell. “In that game, Timothy started very quick and shot the ball very well. We were down 20-6 after the first quarter. We battled back and won the next three quarters combined, but lost 50-42.

Losing that game actually was a good thing to help us to really look at areas we needed to improve on and prepare for against Timothy.”

Tyrrell said an adjusted game plan worked well in the regional title game. “I thought we came in with a very good game plan,” he said. “We wanted to slow the pace down and really throw them off with our zone defense. We scored a quick basket early and then they scored the next

six points. We called a timeout and didn’t want a repeat of last time.

That settled our guys down and they scored only four more points in the half. It was a very low-scoring game in the first half.”

IC Catholic Prep led 10-8 after the first quarter and 16-10 at halftime.

“We held them to two points in the second quarter,” the coach pointed out. “We felt we were in a very good spot at halftime being up and having that lead. That was a good place mentally for us.”

Tyrrell felt a key turning point in the game in the fourth quarter was a possession where the Knights ended up scoring five points via a combination of a shooting foul and a technical foul. a sudden Timothy started battling back. In the fourth quarter they were shooting a lot of threes to try and cut the lead down. They had it to within five or six points with three minutes to go after we were up by 12.”

That’s when the free throws started piling up for the Knights. “They fouled us quite a bit to slow the game down and try and cut down the lead and we kept answering back,” said Tyrrell. “Somebody said that from the four-minute mark of the fourth quarter until the end of the game took about 45 minutes to complete.

It probably was the longest four minutes of a game in my life. We were trying to hold the lead and then they battled back and picked up the pressure. Our guys remained resilient.”

Nico Gaudio made 8 of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter. “They chose to foul Nico when he caught the ball,” said Tyrrell. “We were very confident in him because he had been shooting free throws well.”

Gaudio finished with 10 points, all coming in the fourth quarter. Cheng finished with four points from the field and made 10 of 15 free throws, including 5 of 8 in the fourth quarter.

He ended with 14 points.

Tyrrell also lauded the play of senior Kris Askew who had 12 points.

“Kris probably played the most important game of his career,” he said. “He started big for us. Timothy went with an isolation defense on Kevin and Alex Meurer to try and keep them out of our offense. Kris knocked down two big 3s to get us going early. He did a really good job defensively as well. I was very proud of Kris.”

Meurer finished with nine points.

He had two field goals and was 3-for-4 from the foul line, including 2-for-2 in the fourth quarter. “They did a pretty good job limiting Kevin and Alex,” said Tyrrell.

Timothy played without Khali Saunders, who was out with a hand injury sustained in an earlier game against Wheaton Academy. But Tyrrell noted the Knights still were strong in the post with sophomore Ryan Wojtalewicz, Nico Gaudio and Dom Gaudio.

“This was a really good opportu-

nity for Ryan and he stepped up for us,” said Tyrrell. “He played pretty much the whole game. Nico, Ryan and Dom played post for us against a very talented Brandon Orange, who was averaging a double-double.

I thought all those guys did a good job. Ryan was put on the line several times and finished 6-for-9 from the free-throw line and they all came in the third and fourth quarter when we really needed it. Dom Gaudio didn’t take any shots until he hit the biggest shot of his young career so far when he knocked down a 3 in the fourth quarter when we really needed one.”

Tyrrell noted Timothy stepped things up from the 3-point line late in the game. “In the fourth quarter they hit five 3-point baskets to keep the game close,” he said. “They didn’t hit any 3s in the first half and made two in the third. Just when we thought the lead was comfortable, they would come down and hit a quick 3. And then with them fouling, that slowed the game down. Our guys did a good job of figuring it out and grinding it out and keeping the belief that they could win. Overall, a lot of guys contributed for us. It was a battle.

We knew coming in that they were a very talented team. They finished with 22 wins. We knew we knocked them out of regionals last year in the last few seconds and that they would be motivated and fired up. It was a great game. It was a really cool environment. It was a well-coached game on both sides. It’s nice to be part of another regional championship.”

Tyrell also applauded his team’s bench. “Our bench was outstanding again,” he said. “They had great energy throughout the game and kept things positive and helped us keep focused on what we needed to do.

It’s neat to see this great group of seniors succeed. I’m really excited for them getting this regional championship.”

IC Catholic Prep played Chicago Clark on Tuesday in one semifinal of the Class 2A Timothy Christian sectional in Elmhurst. If the Knights won that game they will play either Chicago Uplift or Chicago Orr for the Timothy Christian sectional title Friday at 7 p.m.
