Park District awarded over $500,000 to renovate Sunrise Park Funds granted from state’s Open Space Land Development program

The Bensenville Park District will receive an award of a $570,100 grant from the State of Illinois’ Open Space Land Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) program as announced the Governor’s Office. The award will help fund the upcoming renovation of Sunrise Park.

“Receiving the OSLAD grant is transformational for the Bensenville

Park District and the community we serve,” said Park District executive director Joseph Vallez, noting the project is one of many capital improvement projects planned for 2024-25 as part of the Bensenville Park District 2.0 capital plan. “The improvements to Sunrise Park will enhance the quality of life for those in our district, allowing those of all

ages and abilities to enjoy new opportunities to get out and play at this renovated space.”

The program, which is administered by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, will distribute nearly $55 million in state grants for 111 local park projects throughout Illinois to help communities acquire land and develop recreational opportunities.

“On behalf of the Bensenville Park District and the residents we serve, we are grateful for the support of the State of Illinois, our legislators— Senate President Don Harmon and State Representative Norma Hernandez, residents and partners for making this possible,” said Park Board president Rich Johnson. “Together everyone achieves more, and we are excited to get started on this project in earnest.”

About the project The proposed Sunrise Park im-

provements include redevelopment of the playground, a futsal court, two pickleball courts, half-court basketball, two soccer fields, a new pollinator/butterfly area with interpretive signage, site furnishings, walking paths and turf restoration. In addition, the proposed accessible play area will provide opportunities for children of all abilities to play in the park.

The accessible walking paths and the poured-in-place rubber surfacing will provide equitable access to the recreational amenities available at this location by providing accessible routes to the playground, soccer fields and courts. The master plan was developed by Des Plaines-based JSD, Inc. The $1.1 million Sunrise Park project will commence in 2024 and should be completed over the course of a year. The project is one of many planned as part of the Bensenville

Park District 2.0 capital improvement program that contains approximately $5 million in community investment directed at neighborhood parks and facilities that directly benefit the populations of Bensenville and Wood Dale the district serves.

Past projects include the completion of the Breiter-Palm Park playground and fitness trail in 2022 and playground construction at Arbor Park in 2023. An update on Bensenville Park District 2.0 is planned as part of the Board of Commissioners meeting Wednesday, Feb. 21 at 5:30 p.m. at the Deer Grove Leisure Center, 1000 W. Wood Street.

Sunrise Park, located at the intersection of Memorial and Marion Streets, consists of 7.3 acres of land in addition to the improvements to the park planned for 2024. The park has a picnic area and shelter available for rentals between May 1 and Sept. 30 each year.

Board of Elections allows Trump’s name to stay on ballot

Hearing officer says constitutional challenges should be decided by courts

Former President Donald Trump’s name will appear on the March 19 Republican primary election ballot in Illinois, barring any extraordinary action by state or federal courts to remove him.

The Illinois State Board of Elections voted unanimously Jan. 30 to deny an objection based on the “insurrectionist clause” of the 14th Amendment, which prohibits former public officials who engage in insurrection or rebellion against the United States from holding public office again.

An attorney for the objectors said in an email that they would appeal the decision to the Cook County Circuit Court.

Board spokesman Matt Dietrich told reporters after the meeting that challenges similar to the one lodged against Trump are “highly unusual.”

“We normally hear things like candidates don’t have a sufficient number of nominating signatures,” he said.

The objectors in Trump’s case argued that his actions surrounding the Jan. 6, 2021, riots at the U.S. Capitol amounted to an insurrection within the meaning of the 14th Amendment.

Trump had encouraged people through social media to come to Washington, D.C., that day to protest the certification of Biden’s win in the 2020

elections. Following a rally Trump hosted outside the White House that day, thousands of protesters marched to the Capitol and stormed through barricades to enter the building, forcing Congress to delay the certification vote.

As part of their evidence, the objectors submitted findings from the U.S. House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol, as well as a December ruling from the Colorado Supreme Court, which disqualified Trump from that state’s primary election ballot.

The U.S. Supreme Court was scheduled to hear oral arguments in a review of the Colorado case on Thursday.

That’s the same day voters in Illinois can begin casting advance ballots in person and the day when local election authorities begin sending out vote-bymail ballots.

Clark Erickson, a former Republican judge from Kankakee County who served as a hearing officer in the objection, issued a report over the weekend concluding that Trump’s actions did constitute an insurrection. But he recommended denying the objection anyway, saying that under Illinois Supreme Court precedents, the board is only authorized to enforce the Illinois Election Code and may not delve into complex constitutional issues.

“There is no question under the law … that this board not only has the authority to determine an objection based on the United States Constitution, but indeed, you have the clear, mandatory duty to do so,” he said.

Attorneys for the Trump campaign made several arguments against the objection. They denied that Trump’s actions constituted an “insurrection” within the meaning of the 14th Amendment and insisted that he had urged his supporters to protest peacefully.

After presentations from both sides and the board’s own general counsel, board member Jack Vrett, an Arlington Heights attorney, made the motion to

dismiss the complaint and overrule the objection. He said he agreed that the board has no authority to decide constitutional questions.

“If we exceeded our authority and went beyond the documents and the nominating petitions and looked at the underlying conduct that was alleged in this case, what I believe you would see is an opening of a floodgate of litigation,” he said.

Board member Catherine McCrory, an attorney from La Grange, supported the motion, but with some apparent reluctance. “I want it to be clear that this Republican believes that there was an insurrection on Jan. 6,” she said.

“There’s no doubt in my mind that

he manipulated, instigated, aided and abetted an insurrection on Jan. 6. However, having said that, it is not my place to rule on that today.”

The board also turned down three objections to President Joe Biden appearing on the Democratic primary ballot, including one that also made a 14th Amendment argument.

That objection argued that various immigration and foreign policy decisions of the Biden administration have amounted to giving aid and comfort to the enemies of the United States.

The board voted unanimously to reject that charge on the grounds that it amounted to a policy disagreement with the candidate.

Man shot and killed after Carol Stream police respond to a report of domestic violence A 30-year-old man died after the Carol Stream Police Department responded to a report of domestic violence early Saturday morning.

According to the Carol Stream Police Department, at about 4:15 a.m. on Saturday, police responded to a reported domestic violence incident at the Village Brook Apartments at 260 E. St. Charles Road in Carol Stream.

According to a statement issued by the department, officers “encountered

a tense, uncertain and rapidly evolving situation, which resulted in officers discharging their weapons at the alleged domestic violence suspect.”

The suspect, Isaac Goodlow III, a 30-year-old resident of the Chicagoland area, was struck and sustained critical injuries. He wans transported to Central DuPage Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No police officers were injured in the incident.

“The department has determined

that two officers discharged their weapons in relation to this incident,” related the Carol Stream Police Department in an additional statement about the shooting. The two officers have been placed on paid leave while the incident is under investigation.

According to the Carol Stream Police Department, officers’ body worn cameras were activated during the incident and will be reviewed as part of an independent investigation.

Bensenville Theatre currently being renovated

The Village of Bensenville has announced that restoration of the historic Bensenville Center Theatre, at 9 S Center St, is on track for an early March completion. As part of an effort to preserve the community’s heritage, the Village embarked on Phase 1 of the renovation project, which aims to restore the iconic 1927 façade and marquee to their original splendor using modern technology.

Phase 1 will focus on revitalizing the Theatre’s exterior, giving it a makeover that carefully restores its original architectural grandeur. This includes the removal of the awning, installation of a new marquee, tuck pointing, and upgraded windows to enhance its historic charm.

Man charged with burglary after allegedly stealing car from Lake St. dealership

while another employee followed the stolen car in their vehicle.

The suspect is believed to have mistakenly turned onto a dead-end street at Mary Court and Junior Terrace. The employee attempted to block the Infiniti with his vehicle, while the suspect accelerated to pass the employee. The vehicles collided and the suspect ran from the damaged Infiniti.

Responding police officers arrived at the scene and set up a perimeter to search for the suspect with the aid of a police K-9 and public safety drone.

At 2:10 p.m. Elmhurst police officers located the suspect at West Ave. and Lorraine St. Officers safely took the suspect into custody and transported him to the Elmhurst Police Station.

While investigating the incident, officers determined the suspect had allegedly burglarized the closed dealership by breaking through a glass door, entering, and removing the vehicle key from inside the building. Further, the dealership security camera system was damaged by the suspect while perpetrating the burglary. It was learned the suspect traveled to the area of the dealership using a rideshare company app and had planned to steal this particular Infiniti.

In consultation with the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, Joshua M. Pickett, 19, of the 1000 block of E. 73rd St., Chicago, was charged with burglary, theft of property-more than $10,000 value, possession of stolen motor vehicle, and two counts of criminal damage to property. He was transported to the DuPage County Jail and was granted pretrial release at first appearance court on Monday, Jan. 29. Pickett’s next court date is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 26, in DuPage County Circuit Court.

The gift of darkness

You know how themes sometimes repeat themselves throughout your day, week, year or life?

It happens to me a lot. At least recently. Or maybe such synchronistic occurrences have always been there and I’ve just recently learned to pay attention to them.

I guess that detail doesn’t matter. What does is that I’m paying attention now. And lately, a common theme has been darkness.

Or more specifically the goodness that darkness can portend.

It seems counterintuitive.

To be extremely succinct, the message I’ve been getting is, “Don’t be afraid of the dark.” But it isn’t like the normal “don’t be afraid of the dark” phrase that you might offer to a child after a bad dream or one that might be whispered during a horror movie?

It isn’t like that. In my lesson (let’s call it that) darkness isn’t the bad guy. Instead, it’s the conduit.

Darkness allows passage into what’s next: into the light. Darkness allows us to understand the light.

Without darkness, light would cease to exist—and vice versa.

Darkness and light need one another.

Over the last three years, I’ve done my best to attempt to describe and define grief. It’s been one of the bleakest, darkest periods I’ve ever experienced. It’s also been one of the most enlightening.

Hence the conundrum and the cadence of the darkness and

My commitment to a two-state solution and peace in the Middle East

By U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi I recently led 43 of my colleagues in the House in sending a letter to President Joe Biden, requesting that the administration outline a strategy toward sustained and enduring peace between the Israeli and Palestinian people through a twostate solution.

The letter comes following Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s public rejection of the prospect of a two-state solution. Without sovereign governments for both Israelis and Palestinians, the endless cycle of violence, terror, and destruction will continue.

While a two-state solution is not possible until those responsible for October’s attack on Israel are brought to justice and the remaining hostages are released, now is the time to begin planning for a day where Israelis and Palestinians can live in peace. This will only be possible through a twostate solution.

On Jan. 23, I spoke with Joy Reid of MSNBC to discuss what a possible path forward to a two-state solution could look like and the steps I would like to see President Biden take next to make sure we work with our partners and allies, including Israel, to make this a reality.

And how do we know if our vote even made it to the polling place? I want to vote in person and watch it placed into the ballot box. Trust, but verify. *** Considering the referendum for District 87, the district wants to update the science labs and the cafeterias. Education is what they learn, not how fancy the labs are; also, the cafeterias at two schools have open campuses, so most of those students go out for lunch. Considering the additional increase on our tax bill, please vote no in the election. Thank you. *** So the former president has already started his SOS; he’s already saying if he loses, then the election was fixed. Sound familiar? Even though this alleged criminal has been able to delay almost every trial, he has been convicted in at least one.

This is putting a strain on our state’s resources, our taxpayer dollars, when we can barely feed and house the poor and the homeless here. The state has proposed $65 million for a shelter? And the mayor of Chicago has plans to evict migrants from the shelters, so where will they go? He said the idea is to get them into other forms of housing, but there is such a shortage of low-income housing for our own residents. The system will keep track of millions of transactions and make the appropriate deductions from each I-Pass account. And yet, on election night, we will be told it will take days to count the votes in some key cities and states. *** It’s interesting how the media quickly dropped its coverage of the seven shooting deaths in Joliet.

In a news report I read, the students were from more than 15 schools and walked out of classes at noon. And the school administrators go along with this? If these students wanted to show their support for a ceasefire, why didn’t they do so after school? If there are ever students who need to be in school for the entire day, it’s CPS students. From what I’ve heard and read, only a small percentage of them can read or do math at their grade levels.

Lombard resident inducted into unique ‘hall of fame’ As a White Castle Craver, that is

Yes, there really is a White Castle Cravers Hall of Fame, and one Lombard resident can prove it.

Don Clelland was inducted on Wednesday, Jan. 31, along with Nick Brow of Schaumburg and the City of Whiting, Ind. As Clelland tells it, “I have a lifetime of stories about White Castle,” especially while growing up in Lombard.

When asked if his childhood includes memories of the restaurant known for its “Sliders,” he responded, “Oh my gosh, yeah. My parents ingrained it in us.”

He said the White Castle he frequented was then located on Highland Avenue and Roosevelt Road in Lombard, and on Sundays getting White Castle “was a tradition in the fall and winter before the Bears games.”

Clelland also remembers that when his father worked a third-shift job, his mom would pack the kids in the car “and bring him a sack of Sliders!”

When the Lombard restaurant closed (now located at Roosevelt Road and Main Street), Clelland would visit the nearby White Castle on Addison Road and North Avenue in Villa Park.

He graduated from Glenbard East High School and went off to college in Iowa, where there were no White Castles. So, he would hit one around here “anytime I was home.”

After finishing college, Clelland lived in Minnesota for a time, and “Thankfully there was a White Castle in Minneapolis!”

Moving back to Illinois, he met his future wife Monika at a party, and discovered that she, too, was a White Castle fan, so it seemed fit-

White Castle has been setting up its restaurants for Valentine’s Day for a number of years now.

“I found a lovely woman who loves White Castle as much as I do,” Clelland said, so he decided to propose at “their” restaurant, using the ruse of stopping for a meal on the way to pick pumpkins.

With the help of a friend, he got a 1970s brown tuxedo and a music speaker to play “My Girl” by the Temptations, which the couple had danced to on their first date.

While his friend went ahead to the Berwyn restaurant with the “props,” Clelland brought with him an engagement ring, all ready to propose.

He made an excuse to use the restroom and when he came out, he was dressed in the tuxedo, playing “My Girl.”

“The look on her face was like, what’s going on?” he recounted.

“Thankfully she said yes!”

The couple even provided White Castle hamburgers as a late snack at their wedding reception, and “Those got ravaged in about 10 minutes!” Clelland said with a chuckle.

After each of their two children were born—both in January—the couple would go to White Castle for Valentine’s Day, complete with the babies in carriers.

Fast forward to living in Lombard with children ages 8 and 11, “It’s a family tradition now.”

Even during the pandemic, the Clellands continued their Valentine’s Day tradition: In 2021 they ordered at the drive-through and set up their dinner at home, complete with a red tablecloth. In 2022, they ordered at the drive-through and sat in their car, with piped-in music on a radio channel provided by White Castle.

Clelland said he subscribes to a White Castle newsletter and found out that the restaurant’s Cravers Hall of Fame was seeking nominees early last year. He decided to enter, and then, “I had forgotten about it.”

He remembers being notified last November that he was a finalist, and then was told in December he had made the Cravers cut.

While he could not be at the ceremony in Columbus, Ohio, he did send in a video from Hawaii, where he was traveling on business.

He said as a Craver, he received “swag” such as a T-shirt and hat, a water bottle, a Yeti cup and a chicken ring pillow, “all in a Craver case!”

Clelland—whose go-to menu item includes a No. 1 combo with extra pickles and a three-piece order of mozzarella sticks—can only

explain his love of White Castle as, “It’s a lifelong passion. Anytime I [see] a White Castle I have to get it.”

And, he concluded, “If you like White Castle you tend to tell everyone you like White Castle!”

According to a press release, the

White Castle Cravers Hall of Fame has been in existence since 2001, “to honor those Cravers whose love for and commitment to White Castle has no bounds.”

Brow’s story was that he and a friend braved a snowstorm in January 2020 to get White Castle, only

a few miles away. The trip ended up taking at least an hour.

The White Castle in Whiting, Ind., was built in 1935, the oldest in the Chicago region. It was torn down and replaced with a larger and more modern restaurant that opened in 2023.

Jim Ilten married Nadine Marie Lindhorst on June 7th, 1957. They have been blessed with four daughters and two son-in-laws: Janet Elise, Julie Marie, Kathleen Louise (Jeffrey) Heller, and Karla Nadine (Gregory) Menze; Nadine and Jim are also richly blessed with four granddaughters; Emma and Elizabeth Heller; Katherine and Caroline Menze.

Pastor Jim is preceded in death by his wife Nadine, his parents, Robert and Hulda; and by his siblings and their spouses: sister Gertrude (LaSalle, ‘Buster’) Schmidt, Eugene (Jane), Robert (Patricia), Philip (Sheila), and young Theodore.

JAMES B. ILTEN James Bruce Ilten, son of Robert and Hulda (nee Brammer) Ilten, was born in Cedar Rapids, IA, on September 29, 1932.

He was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church, Cedar Rapids, IA, on October 23, 1932. He attended Trinity Lutheran Day School, Grades 1-8, and was confirmed at Trinity on April 21, 1946.

James attended high school and junior college at Concordia College, Milwaukee, WI, graduating in 1952.

He attended Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, MO, receiving his B.A. in 1954, Div M., 1957 and S.T.M., 1962. James also did graduate work at the University of Iowa and Chicago Lutheran Theological Seminary.

He completed his residence and course requirements in the doctoral program at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, during the summers of 19671972. Pastor Ilten’s basic training by the Interim Ministry Network was from October 1996 to February 1997.

From 1958-1960 Pastor Ilten served as an instructor in religion at Concordia Teachers College, River Forest, IL. He was ordained into the holy ministry at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Danbury, CT, on November 6th, 1960. Pastor Ilten organized Christ the King Lutheran Church at Newtown, CT, beginning in September 1960, and became her first pastor, serving that congregation

until November of 1968. From 19681978 he served as pastor of Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Michael, Chicago, IL. Pastor Jim was Associate Pastor at St. John Lutheran Church, Lombard IL, from 1978-1997. He served the Northern Illinois District as an International Interim Pastor from 1998-2003 assisting congregations at Waukegan, Burlington and Bartlett. For the next decade, 2003-2013 as Pastor Emeritus, Jim again served at St. John’s, Lombard, as a part time visitation pastor.

During his years in Lombard, Pastor Jim helped organize CROP hunger walks, prayer vigils, retreats, and ministry to college students at DeVry and Natl. College of Chiropractic. He served as the Lombard Police Chaplain from 1991-1997. He was a longtime member of the Rotary Club of Lombard and served on the Board of Directors of the Tri-Town YMCA. He served as the pastoral circuit counselor and as a pastoral advisor for the Lutheran Laymen’s League. For ten years before the Covid pandemic in 2020, Pastor Jim preached twice week-

After a Dec. 7 vote by the Lombard Village Board of Trustees, motorists may now make a right turn on red at the intersection of Hickory and Main streets, just north of the Helen Plum Library.

The Public Safety and Transportation Committee had given its advisory recommendation prior to the board meeting, based on community feedback. The initial no-turn-on-red ordinance was based on “anticipation that landscaping from the new library would have impacted the line of sight,” committee Chair and District 1 Trustee Brian LaVaque said at the meeting. However, “Now that construction’s done, we see the line of sight was not impacted as much as we thought it would be,” he added. As indicated by the new signage, which was installed on Wednesday, Jan. 31, motorists may not turn right on a red light when pedestrians are present.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Oak Brook Chief of Police Brian Strockis have announced that Judge Timothy McJoynt granted the state’s motion Quinton Hicks to deny pre-trial release for a convicted felon accused of leading police on a high-speed chase while in possession of a loaded handgun.

Quinton Hicks, 38, of Chicago, appeared at First Appearance Court and is charged with one count of armed habitual criminal (Class X felony), one count of unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon (Class 2 felony), one count of aggravated fleeing and eluding a police officer (Class 4 felony) and multiple misdemeanor and petty traffic

offenses.

On Saturday, Jan. 27 at approximately 2:56 a.m., an Oak Brook police officer on patrol observed a vehicle, allegedly driven by Hicks, on 22nd Street and Midwest Road reportedly traveling 55 mph in a 35mph zone.

It is alleged that when the officer activated his emergency lights and sirens, instead of pulling over, Hicks sped up reaching speeds of approximately 60 mph and ignored a red light at a traffic control device. It is alleged that Hicks allegedly continued to evade the officer reaching speeds of approximately 70 mph in a 35-mph zone until another officer successfully spiked his tires at Spring Road and 31st Street.

It is further alleged that Hicks continued to drive on flat tires and entered I-294 where he reached speeds of approximately 80 mph

Hicks does not possess a FOID card or CCL. “In DuPage County, we take incidents of fleeing from the police very seriously,” Berlin said. “What is more alarming in this case is that, as a convicted felon, Mr. Hicks is prohibited from owning a firearm, yet he was allegedly found to be in possession of a loaded gun at the time of his arrest. Thankfully, no innocent motorists were injured or worse as a result of Mr. Hicks’ alleged actions.”

Hicks’ next court appearance is scheduled Feb. 26 for arraignment in front of Judge Michael Reidy.

Barring Congressional action, rural, suburban and urban households risk losing affordable high-speed internet

FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel on Feb. 1 wrote to Congressional appropriators to formally inform them that, in one week, the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) will no longer accept new enrollments.

To make clear the real-world impacts if Congress does not renew funding for this critical broadband affordability program, the chairwoman shared enrollment data for every state, territory and Congressional district which show that more than 694,922 households in Illinois could be at risk of losing affordable internet access.

“The Affordable Connectivity Program is connecting millions and millions of households across the country. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law created this program, our largest-ever effort to make broadband affordable nationwide, but we now are on the brink of letting that success slip away,” said Rosenworcel. “Disconnecting millions of families from their jobs, schools, markets, and information is not the solution. We have come too far with the ACP to turn back.”

The ACP is the largest—and most successful—broadband affordability program in our nation’s history. Nearly 23 million households across rural, suburban and urban America rely on the ACP to pay for the high-speed internet service they need for school, work, health care, and more. The ACP supports eligible low-income households struggling to afford monthly broadband service.

In accordance with pre-established wind down procedures, the ACP will stop accepting new enrollments on Feb. 8, and an outreach effort is already underway to tell ACP households about the potential loss of the benefit.

Last week, broadband providers were required to send an initial notice to all of their ACP subscribers to preview the possible end of the ACP and the impact on the households’ broadband bills once the ACP benefit is no longer available.

Following the FCC announcing the official final month of ACP funding, ACP providers must send at least two more notices to households informing them that the ACP is ending, how and when the end of the ACP will impact their bill, and that they may opt-out of continuing service after the end of the ACP or change their service.

As announced in January, ACP funding is currently expected to last through April with only partial support available in May 2024.

Without more funding, nearly 23 million households across the country are at risk of losing internet access. A bipartisan group of senators and representatives have introduced the Affordable Connectivity Program Extension Act, which, if adopted, would provide an additional $7 billion for the ACP. Rams outlast Fenton in triple overtime before losing to Glenbard South Glenbard East hands Bison first Upstate Eight loss; three days later, Rams fall to Raiders

The Glenbard East boys basketball team earned a thrilling triple-overtime Upstate Eight Conference win at Fenton last week. Three days after beating the Bison 57-48 in Bensenville, the Rams lost a 49-38 conference battle to Glenbard South in Lombard.

The Rams held an overall season record of 12-15 and an Upstate Eight record of 10-5 following Friday’s loss to the Raiders.

Fenton entered its Jan. 30 conference game against Glenbard East with an unblemished conference record of 12-0 and an overall mark of 21-3.

The Bison beat the Rams 61-44 in the teams’ first conference meeting of the season on Dec. 15.

“We were motivated; we wanted to knock off a team that’s undefeated in our conference,” said Glenbard East coach Eric Kelly of last week’s battle at Fenton. “We were winning the entire game. We were up 15 in the third quarter. Then we started missing shots, and they [the Bison] started making them.

Our kids were real resilient.”

Sophomore Michael Nee scored 22 points and provided seven assists and six rebounds for the Rams in their Jan. 30 victory at Fenton. Senior Ari Pierson contributed 10 points, 10 rebounds and four assists. Senior Aleks Jajic supplied 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Junior Devin Kraft added eight points and six rebounds.

“We had to score to send it to double and triple overtime,” said Kelly while describing the exciting finish. “Mike Nee made a baseline shot at the end of the first overtime. Devin Kraft made a bank shot [late in the second overtime]

to send it to a third overtime. Ari Pierson made a huge 3-pointer early in the third overtime. Mike Nee made free throws to ice the game.”

The visiting Raiders were in search of revenge during Friday’s conference game in Lombard. The Rams beat Glenbard South 61-49 in the teams’ first conference meeting of the season, which took place on Jan. 13 in Glen Ellyn.

The Raiders never trailed during Friday night’s game, which served as the second half of a girls-boys varsity doubleheader that was played in front of a sizable and enthusiastic crowd.

Glenbard South, which took an early 5-0 lead, held a 12-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Raiders led the Rams 19-16 at halftime and 33-28 at the end of the third quarter.

Glenbard South drained a 3-point shot early in the fourth quarter to take a 36-28 lead. The Raiders led the Rams 40-30 with less than five minutes to play. Nee made a pair of free throws to cut Glenbard South’s lead to 40-32 with 4:45 remaining. Less than 15 seconds later, Nee scored after the Raiders turned the ball over to cut the lead to 40-34.

A three-point play from Nee reduced Glenbard South’s lead to 40-37 with 3:51 to play. The Raiders then closed the game with a 9-1 run.

“They [the Raiders] were ready to go,” said Kelly after Friday’s loss.

“They outplayed us with their energy and their physicality. That was the bottom line.”

Glenbard East entered Friday’s contest with a perfect 15-0 conference record. The Rams edged Glenbard South 39-38 in the teams’ first conference meeting of the season, which took place on Jan. 13 in Glen Ellyn. Both teams entered that game with identical conference records of 9-0.

Glenbard East’s overall season record slipped to 20-8 with Friday’s loss to Glenbard South. The Raiders raised their season record to 20-7 with their convincing victory over the Rams.

With Friday’s victory, the Raiders pulled into a tie with the Rams in the conference standings. Both teams ended the week with 15-1 Upstate Eight records. Glenbard South and Glenbard East will likely share the conference title with identical 17-1 conference records.

Broncos deliver convincing regional victory Ten Montini wrestlers win individual titles at Saint Ignatius; four other Broncos advance to this week’s sectional in Grayslake

The Montini Catholic wrestling team delivered a dominant performance to win the championship plaque at Saturday’s IHSA Class 2A Saint Ignatius Individual Regional in Chicago.

The Broncos won 10 individual regional titles and posted three second-place finishes and one third-place finish at the event. Montini produced a winning team total of 297.5 points at the seven-team regional. Fenwick finished second with its team score of 189 points. Montini’s wrestling program earned its 18th IHSA regional team title with Saturday’s performance.

The top three finishers in each of the regional’s 14 weight levels advanced to this week’s Class 2A individual sectional at Grayslake Central High School. The top four finishers in each weight class at the sectional will qualify for the state meet in Champaign.

All 14 of the Montini wrestlers who competed in Saturday’s regional advanced to the individual sectional in Grayslake.

The Broncos’ victory in the team standings of the regional propelled them to the upcoming dual-team sectional at Wauconda High School, which will take place on Feb. 20. Two teams from that sectional will advance to the IHSA Class 2A dual-team state meet, which will take place Feb. 23-24 in Bloomington.

Montini’s 10 individual champions at Saturday’s Saint Ignatius Regional included: freshman Allen Woo, who won the title in the 106-pound division; freshman Mikey Malizzio, who claimed the title in the 113-pound level, and freshman Isaac Mayora, who

Junior Josh Vazquez (126 pounds), sophomore Kam Luif (132 pounds), sophomore Jeremy Huf (138 pounds), senior David Mayora (150 pounds), senior Harrison Konder (157 pounds), sophomore Santino Tenuta (165 pounds) and senior Mick Ranquist (285 pounds) also won regional championships for the Broncos.

Senior David Hernandez (144 pounds), sophomore A.J. Tack (175 pounds) and junior Jaxon Lane (190 pounds) delivered second-place finishes for Montini at Saturday’s regional.

Freshman Gavin Ericson of the Broncos advanced to the individual sectional by posting a third-place finish in the regional’s 215-pound level.

“We are getting back to full strength,” said Montini coach Mike Bukovsky after Saturday’s championship effort. “We wrestle a very demanding schedule. We’re battle-tested.

A big key for us is trying to get everybody healthy. We’re as healthy as we’ve been all season.”

Based on their school’s total enrollment, the Broncos should be wrestling in the IHSA Class 1A level during the current post-season. But last summer, Montini petitioned the IHSA to be moved up to the Class 2A division.

“We just felt that’s where we belonged,” said Bukovsky of the team’s desire to wrestle against Class 2A competition this season. “It’s no secret that our program struggled a little. We made a bit of a bounce-back last year.

We’re excited about turning it around this year.”

The Rams led the Warriors 42-41 at the end of the third quarter. Carney made a pair of free throws to even the score at 48-48 with 1:38 left in the game. Willowbrook then scored four straight points to take a 52-48 lead.

The Warriors held a 54-49 advantage with less than one minute to play, but Carney’s sixth 3-point basket of the game cut Willowbrook’s lead to 54-52 with 48 seconds remaining.

The Rams inbounded the ball in game’s closing seconds. Carney wound up trying a 3-point shot at the last second. The shot hit the rim and spun away without dropping.

Carney poured in 35 points for the Rams in last week’s battle against Willowbrook. Johnson scored eight points, while junior Veronica Witt provided five points.

One day after losing to the Warriors, Glenbard East routed Fenton 70-28 in a conference game in Lombard. The Rams led the Bison 26-11 after one quarter and 47-16 at halftime. Glenbard East’s lead grew to 63-22 by the end of the third quarter.

Carney and Robbins scored 15 points each for the Rams in last week’s win over Fenton. Carney drained three 3-point shots during the first half. Robbins made a pair of 3-point baskets in the first half and added one more longrange shot in the third quarter.

Senior Gabby Walton provided 14 points for the Rams in last week’s home win over Fenton. Johnson, who made three 3-point shots, contributed 13 points.

Glenbard South’s defense suffocated the Rams in Friday’s conference clash, which was played in front of a large crowd that came to witness a varsity girls-boys doubleheader between the two schools. The Raiders shut out Glenbard East during the game’s opening eight minutes. Glenbard South closed the quarter with a pair of 3-point shots to take a 13-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Rams cut the Raiders’ lead to 21-11 by halftime. Johnson hit a 3-point shot as the first half ended to reduce Glenbard South’s lead to 10 points.

The Raiders delivered a 10-0 run at the start of the third quarter to take a 31-11 lead. Glenbard South led the Rams 38-16 at the end of the third quarter.

Johnson scored nine points for Glenbard East in Friday’s loss. Freshman Teagan Murphy added four points. Robbins and Witt provided three points each, while Carney scored two points.

After finishing their regular season this week, the Rams will open the post-season with a Feb. 13 game against Wheaton Warrenville South at the IHSA Class 4A Bartlett Regional.

The winner will likely meet Batavia in the regional final on Feb. 16.

The Glenbard East girls gymnastics team competed at last week’s four-team IHSA Glenbard West Regional in Glen Ellyn.

Glenbard West won the team title at the Jan. 31 regional with its total score of 139.525. Geneva (137.3) finished second, while Glenbard South (126.875) placed third. Glenbard East delivered a fourth-place total of 113.3 at the regional, which also included gymnasts from Carbondale High School.

Glenbard East senior Olivia Broyles finished eighth in the regional’s all-around competition with her score of 31.95. Broyles tied for eighth on the uneven bars (7.975) and placed 10th on the balance beam (8.125). She tied for 16th on the vault (8.2) and delivered a 17th-place finish in floor exercises (7.65).

The regional’s top five finishers in each event automatically qualified for this week’s sectional at Wheaton Warrenville South High School.

bard West Regional and three additional regionals (Elk Grove, Leyden and Lake Park) earned at-large berths into the sectional in Wheaton. Broyles secured at-large berths in the uneven bars event and in the all-around competition.

Senior Emma Iwaniszyn of the Rams placed 13th in the all-around standings at the regional with her four-event total of 30.75.

Iwaniszyn finished 12th in floor exercises (8.1) and tied for 13th on the uneven bars (7.0).

She claimed 18th on the vault (8.15) and placed 19th on the balance beam (7.5).

Junior Dalia Daoud, freshman Mylee Janisch and sophomore Keira Nelson formed the rest of Glenbard East’s regional lineup in last week’s event in Glen Ellyn.

Daoud finished 16th in the meet’s all-around standings with her total of 26.825.

Janisch (23.225) and Nelson (20.45) placed 17th and 18th, respectively, in the Glenbard West Regional’s all-around standings.

Broncos finish second at GCAC Tournament Montini beats Mother McAuley in the semifinal round before losing to undefeated Loyola Academy in the title contest

The Montini Catholic girls basketball team advanced to the championship game of last week’s Girls Catholic Athletic Conference (GCAC) Tournament. The Broncos, who won three straight tournament games to earn a berth in Saturday’s title contest, faced the undefeated Ramblers of Loyola Academy in the championship game at Mother McAuley High School.

Loyola Academy defeated Montini 76-57 in Saturday’s tournament championship battle. The Ramblers closed out their regular season with the victory, which raised their record to 31-0.

The Broncos’ overall season record fell to 24-6 after Saturday’s loss.

Montini finished its regular season with a game at Benet Academy earlier this week.

The Broncos opened the GCAC Tournament by posting two convincing home victories over De La Salle Institute and Trinity. Montini pounded De La Salle 59-15 on Jan. 29. One day later, the Broncos earned a 72-45 win over Trinity.

Montini faced Mother McAuley in a tournament semifinal battle at Loyola Academy on Feb. 1. The Broncos defeated the Mighty Macs

70-57 to advance to Saturday’s championship game against the Ramblers.

Two months ago, Montini suffered a 63-45 loss at Mother McAuley during the GCAC season. The Broncos avenged that Dec. 6 setback with their performance in last week’s semifinal.

Montini held a 19-8 lead after one quarter of last week’s first-round game against De La Salle. The Broncos expanded their lead to 40-10 by halftime. The lead grew to 54-14 by the end of the third quarter.

Junior Nikki Kerstein scored 13 points for Montini in last week’s first-round victory over the Meteors.

Junior Audrey Kinney provided 12 points for the Broncos, while senior Alyssa Epps contributed nine points.

Senior Victoria Matulevicius supplied six points for Montini. Juniors Peyton Farrell and Maggie Nielsen added five points each.

Montini led Trinity 20-14 after one quarter of last week’s second-round

game in Lombard. The Broncos led the Blazers 38-27 at halftime. Montini outscored Trinity 24-9 in the third quarter to boost their lead to 62-36 with eight minutes to play.

Matulevicius scored a team-leading 22 points for the Broncos in their Jan. 30 win over Trinity. She scored 18 of those 22 points during the first half. Kerstein added 21 points in Montini’s win over the Blazers. Epps contributed nine points. Juniors Shea Carver and Lauren Mellish netted six and five points, respectively.

The Broncos led Mother McAuley 16-10 after one quarter of last week’s semifinal contest. Montini owned a 33-25 halftime lead. The Broncos led the Mighty Macs 47-35 at the end of the third quarter.

Kerstein, who did not score in the first quarter of the semifinal game against Mother McAuley, piled up a team-leading 30 points in the victory. She made three shots from 3-point range and scored 10 points

in the second quarter. After scoring two points in the third quarter, Kerstein supplied 18 of Montini’s 23 fourth-quarter points. She made 14 of 16 free throws during the last 3:16 of the game. Kerstein stepped to the foul line with 3:16 to play. After missing her first attempt, she made her next shot to raise the Broncos’ lead to 53-45.

Kerstein made 10 straight free throws from the 2:41 mark in the final quarter until the 1:09 mark. She closed out her 30-point performance on a driving layup with 25 seconds to play.

Matulevicius made nine field goals and scored 20 points for the Broncos in last week’s win over Mother McAuley. Epps and Carver provided seven points each. Farrell tallied four points. Senior Riley White contributed two points with a third-quarter basket.

The Broncos led Loyola 21-16 after one quarter of Saturday’s cham-

pionship game. The Ramblers rallied to take a 34-33 halftime lead. Loyola led the Broncos 58-49 at the end of the third quarter.

Matulevicius scored a team-leading 17 points in Saturday’s contest.

Carver, who made three 3-point shots in the first quarter, provided 16 points. She made her fourth 3-point field goal of the day during the fourth quarter. Farrell supplied 11 points, while Epps and Kerstein scored eight and five points, respectively.

Montini is the No. 1 seed in the Glenbard South Sectional in the upcoming IHSA Class 3A tournament.

The Broncos will begin the post-season by hosting next week’s regional in Lombard. Montini should pick up two wins to claim the regional title and advance to the Glenbard South Sectional. If the Broncos earn two victories in Glen Ellyn to claim the sectional title, they would advance to a super-sectional at Concordia University in River Forest.

Rams and Warriors take part in Class 3A regional at Glenbard West The Glenbard East and Willowbrook wrestling teams competed in Saturday’s IHSA Class 3A Glenbard West Individual Regional in Glen Ellyn.

Marmion Academy won the team title in the event with its total score of 212 points. Glenbard West finished second with 156 points. Batavia (126 points) and Downers Grove North (122 points) placed third and fourth, respectively.

Glenbard East delivered a fifthplace finish with its total of 93

points. Lyons Township (83 points) landed in sixth place, while Wheaton Warrenville South (46 points) claimed seventh.

Willowbrook posted an eighthplace finish with its total of 37.5 points.

Willowbrook will compete in this weekend’s Glenbard East Sectional at Bowlero in Glendale Heights. The top four teams at the 12-team sectional will advance to the IHSA state meet, which will take place Feb. 16-17 at the Cherry Bowl in Rockford.

The Warriors won the regional title in Westmont with Saturday’s total pin count of 4,992. Morton (4,823) finished second, while York (4,776) placed third. Glenbard East (4,670) secured a fourth-place finish in the regional to earn a berth in this weekend’s sectional. St. Charles North (4,493) finished fifth at the regional.

The top four teams in each of the state’s 18 regionals earned sectional berths. There will be six sectionals this Saturday, Feb. 10.

Senior Jacquelyn Porro led Willowbrook to its regional title by winning the event’s individual championship with her six-game total of 1,204.

Porro opened Saturday’s event with a 199 in her first game. She rolled a 233 in her second game before posting a 191 in her third game. Porro completed the regional with scores of 197, 200 and 184 in her final three games.

Senior Lauren Carson of Willowbrook delivered a ninth-place finish in the regional’s individual standings with her six-game score of exactly 1,000. Carson bowled her best game of the regional in her second game, when she fired a 220.

Senior Annabelle Thompson contributed to Willowbrook’s regional title with her six-game score of 904.

Thompson placed 20th in the regional’s individual standings.

Senior Maddie Wolf bowled four games for the Warriors at the regional.

She supplied a 170 in her best game of the event. Senior Emma Anderlik of Willowbrook bowled two regional games in the event. She tallied a 143 in her top game of the competition.

Warriors earn another win over the Rams Bruschuk scores 29 points in Willowbrook’s win in Lombard; Warriors then finish their conference season with a win over Leyden and a loss to DG South

The Willowbrook girls basketball team won two of three games last week to improve its overall season record to 13-17. The Warriors went 1-1 in West Suburban Gold Conference play last week to conclude their conference season with an 8-4 mark.

Willowbrook opened the week with a 54-52 victory over Glenbard East in a non-conference game in Lombard on Jan. 29. One night later, the Warriors edged Leyden 52-50 in a conference battle in Villa Park.

Willowbrook completed the week with Friday’s 55-33 conference loss at Downers Grove South.

The Warriors finished third in the seven-team conference standings. Hinsdale South and Downers Grove South shared first-place honors with identical 10-2 conference records. Willowbrook secured a solo third-place finish with its 8-4 record.

Morton and Leyden both posted conference records of 5-7. Proviso East and Addison Trail both went 2-10 in conference play.

Senior Elle Bruschuk scored 29 points to lead the Warriors to last week’s win at Glenbard East. Bruschuk made five 3-point shots during the victory.

Willowbrook led the Rams 15-13 after one quarter of last week’s contest, which was a rematch of a Dec. 13 battle in Villa Park. (The Warriors prevailed 48-30 in the teams’ first game of the season.) Glenbard East owned a 32-28 halftime lead. The Rams led Willowbrook 42-41 at the end of the third quarter.

Bruschuk sank a 3-point shot early in the fourth quarter to give the Warriors a 44-42 lead. The game was tied at 48-48 when junior Ayaani Gusman of the Warriors went to the free-throw line with 1:24 to play. Gusman made her first free throw and missed the second attempt. Bruschuk grabbed the rebound of the missed shot. She scored a basket and was fouled on the play. Bruschuk made the ensuing free throw to give the Warriors a 5248 lead with 1:23 on the clock.

Bruschuk made two free throws with 57.7 seconds to play to push Willowbrook’s lead to 54-49. The Rams made a 3-point shot to cut the Warriors’ lead to 54-52 with 48 seconds remaining.

Glenbard East tried and missed a 3-point shot in the game’s final seconds.

Senior Lillian Vish scored nine

points for Willowbrook in last week’s win at Glenbard East. Junior Loralai McIntyre, who made a pair of 3-point shots, added eight points. Gusman scored six points, while senior Seyna Fall contributed two points.

The Warriors struggled in the first half of last week’s conference home game against Leyden. The visiting Eagles led Willowbrook 13-4 after one quarter and 32-19 at halftime.

The Warriors cut Leyden’s lead to 36-35 by the end of the third quarter.

Willowbrook took the lead in the fourth quarter and held a 50-47 advantage with more than one minute to play. The Eagles sank a 3-point shot to tie the score at 50-50 with 1:05 remaining.

Senior Kalina Henry gave the Warriors the lead when she scored an inside basket—her only basket of the game—off an inbounds pass from Bruschuk with 18 seconds to play to give Willowbrook its 52-50 lead.

Leyden missed a last-second shot that could have tied the game. Senior Tia Kelly grabbed the rebound for Willowbrook and was fouled with 3.4 seconds remaining. The Warriors then inbounded the ball to Bruschuk, who was fouled with 2.0 seconds to play. Willowbrook inbounded the ball one more time and ran out the clock.

Bruschuk scored 20 points in last week’s win over Leyden. She connected on two shots from 3-point range and made eight of nine attempts from the free-throw line.

Gusman, who made three 3-point field goals, supplied 15 points for the Warriors in last week’s win over the Eagles. Vish added six points, while McIntyre contributed five points, including a 3-point basket that tied the score at 46-46 with 2:45 left in the game. Kelly, Fall and Henry provided two points each.

Willowbrook defeated Downers Grove South 65-63 in double overtime in the teams’ first conference meeting of the season on Dec. 15.

The Mustangs gained some revenge on the Warriors in Friday’s rematch.

Downers Grove South led Willowbrook 12-2 after one quarter, 22-14 at halftime and 41-29 after three quarters.

A driving basket from Bruschuk cut the Mustangs’ lead to 41-31 with 7:30 to play. Downers Grove South outscored 14-2 during the rest of the game.

Willowbrook will begin IHSA Class 4A post-season play with a Feb. 12 regional semifinal against Glenbard West on the Hilltoppers’ home court in Glen Ellyn. The winner can expect to face Geneva in the regional final on Feb. 15.

Warriors lose a pair of conference battles The Willowbrook boys basketball team fell to 3-6 in West Suburban Gold Conference play following last week’s losses to Leyden and Downers Grove South.

The Warriors lost 59-53 at Leyden on Jan. 30. Downers Grove South beat Willowbrook 84-55 on Friday in Villa Park.

The Warriors’ overall season record fell to 8-19 after Saturday’s 6929 non-conference loss at Christ the King.

Sophomore Otis Powell scored 23 points for Willowbrook in last week’s loss at Leyden. Senior Noah Boyd contributed 16 points for the Warriors.

Senior Kenyon Rhodes provided five points and six rebounds. Senior Andrew Ciesinski tallied three points, eight rebounds and four blocks.

Willowbrook led Leyden 15-12 after one quarter. The Eagles held a 25-20 halftime lead. The Warriors

owned a 41-40 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Downers Grove South led Willowbrook 25-14 after one quarter of Friday’s conference meeting. The Mustangs held a 52-24 lead at halftime and a 76-45 edge at the end of the third quarter.

The Warriors’ schedule this week includes this Friday’s conference home game against Proviso East, along with Saturday’s conference contest at Addison Trail.

Plan will be the product of the community, with a vision and recommendations guided by valuable input received from residents, business owners, community leaders, and other stakeholders. Over the next year, residents should stay active and aware of the project as it progresses by tracking it through the project website, which will be available through elmhurst. org/downtownplanupdate. Additionally, stakeholders can access the online survey and create their own map with issues and opportunites for Downtown Elmhurst through this website.

The purpose of this listening session is to establish a dialogue and obtain feedback from those members of the business community that have a unique insight and perspective, and whose assistance and involvement is crucial to the Downtown Plan’s ultimate success.

Downtown Plan Public Workshop

Tuesday, February 13th from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at City Hall This event will allow residents and stakeholders to provide input before any plan recommendations are formulated.

Attendees will learn about the planning process to be undertaken and the project schedule. The project team will give a presentation and conduct a Downtown issues and opportunities activity with attendees.
