Copays take effect for immigrant health programs as cost estimates continue to decline Expected program expenditures have declined by $60 million since August

Cost estimates for a pair of state-funded health care programs serving certain low-income noncitizens have declined by tens of millions of dollars in recent months as the state rolled out new copay and co-insurance requirements earlier this month.

The Health Benefits for Immigrant Adults and Health Benefits for Immigrant Seniors programs provide state-funded Medicaid-like benefits to individuals aged 42 and over who would otherwise be eligible for the federal low-income health care program if not for their immigration status.

That includes those in the U.S. without legal permission and those who have obtained a green card but not yet completed a five-year waiting period to earn federal benefits. Individuals who have applied for asylum or sanctuary in the U.S.—which includes many of the more than 34,000 migrants bused to Illinois from Texas in the last year-and-a-half—more likely qualify for other preexisting state or federal benefits.

Advocates for the programs contend they are not only lifesaving but also cost-saving in the long-run as they give individuals access to preventative care rather than making them reliant upon expensive emergency room visits to treat conditions that worsen due to lack of care.

Opponents of the programs, namely Republican lawmakers, have criticized them as an expensive entice-

ment for people illegally residing in the U.S. to relocate to Illinois.

The programs, originally launched for those aged 65 and older in 2020 then expanded in waves, became a sticking point in state budget negotiations last year when Gov. JB Pritzker’s administration projected their single-year costs to exceed $1 billion.

But current estimates now project the programs will cost $773 million in the current fiscal year. Those estimates, however, have declined by $60 million since August, the month following the Pritzker administration’s initial announcement of certain cost-saving measures.

Cost-saving measures Ultimately, the contentious budget negotiations ended last year with lawmakers allocating $500 million in funding to the program from the state’s General Revenue Fund and giving the Pritzker administration authority to limit program enrollment and costs.

The administration in turn paused enrollment in HBIA as of July 1 and in HBIS as of Nov. 6. The two programs now collectively serve about 69,000 people aged 42 and older, and enrollment remains paused.

In January, the administration also began moving enrollees to the state’s Medicaid managed care program, which connects individuals with private insurers who contract with the state to oversee routine and follow-up health care.

The Department of Healthcare and

Family Services, which administers the programs, expects the managed care transition to be complete in April.

After months of delays, the department announced that copays and co-insurance for certain services went live Feb. 1.

“Most services covered by the HBIA and HBIS programs … will continue to be free for customers, including primary care visits, prescription medications and vaccinations at a pharmacy or doctor’s office,” the department said in a news release.

“The new copays and co-insurance will apply to the use of non-emergency hospital or surgical center services, like nonemergent elective surgeries, physical therapy and lab work.”

Enrollees may see a $250 copay per nonemergency inpatient hospitalization and a 10 percent charge for nonemergency outpatient services or care received from ambulatory surgical treatment centers. It’s a major difference from the federally funded Medicaid program, which does not require copays.

Whether individuals are subject to those copays and co-insurance requirements will depend on if they have already been enrolled in managed care and which managed care organization is serving them, according to the department. The state reimburses managed care organizations at a specified rate, giving the MCOs authority to charge copays or co-insurance without requiring them to do so.

where most program enrollees are located, is waiving all copays and coinsurance requirements, per the department.

The department announced it no longer plans to issue a copay for emergency room visits.

The Healthy Illinois Campaign, a statewide coalition of immigrant and health care advocates, has pushed for an expansion of the program and fought any efforts to limit it or install cost-sharing.

The group’s director, Tovia Siegel, praised the administration’s decision not to charge a copay for emergency room care but said the other copays “place a significant burden on both providers and patients, limiting access to healthcare for Illinois’ immigrant community.”

The copays, advocates noted, are charged to medical providers by MCOs, but the providers are required to collect them from patients, creating an administrative burden. As well, they warned that individuals may choose to defer certain “elective” procedures, such as a colonoscopy, due to the copay requirement, potentially undermining the program’s preventative care goals.

“We urge the Department of Healthcare and Family Services and Managed Care Organizations to reconsider implementing these charges, which will generate a relatively small amount of money but can be the difference between life and death for low-income Illinoisans,” Siegel said in a statement.

Costs declining The programs’ cost estimates, meanwhile, have been on the decline amid the administration’s savings measures. In September, an HFS analysis estimated the programs’ 12-month cost to be $832 million for

the fiscal year that ends June 30.

But the department’s latest estimate, published Jan. 9, now projects the programs will cost $773 million.

In total, the state has spent nearly $330 million collectively on the programs in the first six months of the fiscal year, per the January estimate.

The department’s data shows average monthly costs for the programs decreased steadily between August and December, from $72.7 million to $45.3 million.

When the state announced its enrollment caps, it noted per-enrollee costs were higher among the HBIA and HBIS populations “due to more prevalent, untreated chronic conditions and higher hospital costs.” With the caps in place, the program is now populated with individuals who’ve been receiving routine care, rather than a steady stream of new enrollees who are more expensive to insure.

Thus, the per-patient monthly costs have also declined. In August, per-patient costs reached $1,232 for enrolled individuals aged 65 and older, $1,295 for those aged 55-64, and $844 for those aged 42-54. In December, those numbers declined to $778, $805 and $541, respectively.

Advocates pointed to those declines as evidence that the programs are accomplishing their intended goal of replacing costly emergency care with more cost-efficient preventative services.

“While there are several potential explanations, cost decreases in the HBIA and HBIS programs can be an indication that enrollees are receiving more preventative care and therefore needing less intensive, expensive care,” Siegel said. “However, the implementation of copays could threaten these gains as enrollees are dissuaded from receiving this cost-saving preventative care.”

After failing to pass a child tax credit last year, advocates returned to Springfield last week to propose a scaled back version of the policy which they say would still reduce child poverty and spur economic growth.

The proposal, contained in House Bill 4917 and Senate Bill 3329, would create a $300 per-child refundable tax credit for families who earn less than the state’s median income—about $75,000 per year for couples and $50,000 for single parents.

The policy would cost the state about $300 million, according to Erion Malasi, Illinois policy director for the Economic Security Project, an advocacy group backing the proposal.

A January report from the Illinois Economic Policy Institute, a unionbacked think tank, found that a $300

tax credit would cost the state about $471 million, although that estimate doesn’t account for cost reductions in other state programs, like the earned income tax credit or the supplemental nutrition program for women, infants and children, known as WIC—and it assumes that 100 percent of eligible families will claim the credit.

Frank Manzo, an economist with ILEPI and co-author of that report, said a $300 per-child credit would be lower than in the other 15 states that have similar policies. Utah, Minnesota and Oregon, which enacted a similar credit last year, all offer $1,000 or more in credits.

“But it does comport with some budgetary realities in the state of Illinois,” he told Capitol News Illinois on Wednesday.

Welcome to the jungle of online dating

Editor’s note: Previously published columns by Mike Sandrolini are being re-published periodically on the Opinion page. This column was originally published in 2014.

You love her … but she loves him … and he loves somebody else; you just can’t win. And so it goes ’till the day you die; this thing they call love, it’s gonna make you cry.

I’ve had the blues, the reds and the pinks …One thing for sure: Love stinks These opening lyrics from a 1980s song, “Love Stinks” by the J. Geils Band were made popular in the 1998 movie, “The Wedding Singer,” starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore.

I use “Love Stinks” as a segue into today’s epistle that addresses a popular, yet often vilified, option singles employ in their seemingly endless search for that elusive Mr. or Ms. Right: Online dating.

There are success stories, your perfect soul mate and/or God’s match for you out there, if commercials for Match.com, eHarmony and Christian Mingle are taken at face value. However, I’d bet the rent that for a majority of singles, online dating can best be summed up by lyrics from an old Guns N’ Roses tune: “Welcome to the jungle; we’ve got fun and games.” Or if you’re really down on the online dating scene, “Welcome to the jungle, it gets worse here every day.”

An experience earlier this year for me with regard to online dating falls under “we’ve got fun and games.”

One weekend, I contacted a woman who resides in a state that neighbors the I-Pass Republic of Illinois and whose town is a reasonable driving distance from me. We corresponded regularly for the next couple of days and exchanged phone numbers.

Then things got interesting.

One afternoon, she mentioned in a post she was going out for dinner and drinks with a friend that evening. While out, she sent me a flurry of texts.

“I looked at your pics all day,” she gushed in one of her texts. “You probably noticed. I can’t wait to meet you.”

Well, if it’s true what they say about how people get better-looking at closing time, then that must have been the case with her looking at my pics as the evening progressed. The next day (a Thursday), she admitted she had had a drink or two too many, yet insisted she meant every word in her texts.

We talked on the phone for about an hour that night, and agreed to

meet on Saturday. I called her Friday night to shore things up, but no response. You probably have a good idea where this is heading, right?

To make a long story short (it would take another 200 words to explain all the details) the date never took place and I ended up not hearing back from her. Oh, well … If I may borrow the line made famous by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the movie, Terminator 2: Judgement Day: “Hasta la vista, baby.”

Admittedly, we men are guilty of playing games far more than the opposite sex, and for misrepresenting ourselves online.

According to what female friends tell me, some fellows play fast and loose with their marital status; post photos of themselves when they were 20 years younger, 50 pounds lighter and had full heads of hair; strike a pose with their vehicles and houses (and/or with the fish they caught on their last fishing trip); or post selfies in front of the bathroom mirror shirtless.

Fair enough. I’ll take their word for it since I don’t look at men’s profiles. However, I’ve spent plenty of time combing through profiles of single women; thus, I’ll utilize the remaining space allotted to pass along some tips and suggestions that will hopefully help all the single ladies out there snag Mr. Wonderful: • One of the quickest ways to have someone bypass your profile is to put something in it that’s, well, over the top. One woman, for example, (I kid you not) had a selfie with a Crayola Crayon sticking out of each of her nostrils as her main profile pic. I recall another profile in which a woman shared with prospective suitors that her father is a Willie Nelson impersonator. (So let me guess: After a couple months of dating, she brings you home to Luckenbach, Texas, to meet Waylon and Willie and the boys.)

• Most women’s profiles I’ve viewed are upbeat and well done.

However, some insist on using their profiles to chastise and/or bash men, which begs the question: How’s that empty inbox under “new messages” working out for you?

Glenbard superintendent discusses District 87 referendum, facility needs

These sorts of problems need to be fixed before the issues grow larger.

In a similar vein, our four Glenbard high schools—which range in age from 51 to 101 years old—have numerous capital improvement needs.

On the March 19 election ballot, Glenbard Township High School District 87 has a referendum seeking to secure funding necessary to make crucial facility improvements.

Our 10-year facility master plan will address prioritized needs in the following areas:

Classroom and science lab improvements • Upgrade out-of-date science labs.

• Add windows and replace lighting and flooring where needed.

• Align classroom design with current best practices in curriculum and instruction.

Infrastructure • When crucial infrastructure ages and becomes inefficient, operating costs increase, taking money away from instructional priorities.

• Continue to upgrade and renovate infrastructure items like roofs, windows, doors, electrical systems, plumbing, and heating and cooling systems.

Overcrowding • Upgrade cafeteria space to eliminate overcrowding and provide flexible learning and program spaces.

Access to student support services Safety and security • Relocation of commons areas • Upgrades are needed for safety to increase accessibility for student and security systems to keep up with support services such as social worktoday’s best practices. The safety of ers and counselors.

Referendum summary • On the March 19 election ballot, Glenbard District 87 will ask voters to approve a $183 million bond issue to fund its new 10-year facility master plan.

• If approved, the referendum will cost the owner of a $300,000 home about $4 per week.

• Over the next 10 years, the district will fund an additional $129 million of improvements from its operating budget. This amount combined with the referendum proposal comes to a total of $312 million for facility projects.

• The proposed improvements would address facility needs in our four high school buildings—which are between 51 and 101 years old.

We must make sure our educational spaces support today’s best practices in curriculum and instruction.

Did anyone else read the story about mail-in voting that was in the Feb. 1 Lombardian? A Democrat state representative from Urbana is pushing a bill that would give local officials in Illinois the authority to mail ballots to all voters in their jurisdiction, whether or not voters ask for one. This one-sided story from Capitol News Illinois doesn’t provide any criticism of the proposal to flood the state with mailin ballots. According to the story, mail-in voting is safe! It’s secure!

It saves money! What the story doesn’t mention is what everyone with common sense knows: mass mail-in voting is an invitation to fraud. Capitol News Illinois is not an objective news source. *** I read in the Daily Herald about Naperville Councilman Josh McBroom suggesting residents sign up to house migrants, and while he had a few supporters among fellow council members, it was axed as a future meeting item for discussion.

He admittedly called it a “polite challenge” to residents who support open borders. Residents then spoke out at a later meeting saying they were insulted, calling his challenge a “political stunt” and “disingenuous.” It is one thing to feel like one is “supporting” the cause by donating food, water, warm clothing, etc., so I think the councilman has a point. McBroom was quoted in the article: “Many of my colleagues and fellow residents are quick to support the idea of welcoming and supporting new migrants, but no one is willing to invite them into their home. And my statement

YVONNE A. SEPERICH, 94 Yvonne Adele Seperich (nee Maisey), 94, a long-time resident of Lombard, passed away in Denver, Colorado, on December 25, 2023, with family at her side.

The beloved daughter of the late Robert and Ruth Maisey, the Maiseys moved to their home on Lewis Avenue in 1930 during the Great Depression where she attended York High School. A few short years after graduating, she met the love of her life, Richard Seperich, and they were married in the spring of 1950. While raising a family in Lombard, Yvonne became an active member of the Lombard United Methodist Church.

Often dressed in lilac apparel, her favorite color and flower, she was known to volunteer for many civic organizations in the Lilac Village and eventually was named Executive Director of the Lombard Chamber of Commerce. She was also selected as Lombard’s Woman of the Year in 1982.

Upon their retirement to Fairfield Glade, Tennessee, Yvonne and Richard continued to be active in the Methodist church while volunteering for local community organizations that included recycling and other environmental preservation programs.

As avid golfers, she and Richard enjoyed playing the many courses nearby. Richard passed away shortly after they celebrated their Golden anniversary and several years later, Yvonne relocated to Colorado to be close to family where she continued to volunteer at the Children’s Hospital and serve her church. She is survived by sons Gary (Dori), Scott (Janie) and Randy (Cheri), eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Richard) DeWitt, fourteen nieces In 1941, shortly before the U.S. entry into World War II, 18-yearold Dorothy Kett began working as a bond clerk at the Federal Reserve Bank in downtown Chicago, commuting daily from Lombard. In the 1950s she left the bank, cashing out her accrued pension funds to attend Loyola University, where she earned a college degree, leading to her next profession as a public school teacher and librarian. She retired from teaching in 1980.

An avid sailing and fishing enthusiast, Dorothy purchased a summer cottage on Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, in the early 1960s, maintaining her own sailboat and a full tackle box.

She also traveled extensively across the U.S. with her circle of friends, and ultimately visited some of the Canadian provinces, as well as Ireland and several other European countries.

Music was a vitally important part of Dorothy’s life, and two of her closest friends, Geri Alt and Mary Rosso, were parttime professional musicians and entertainers with a female combo known as the Melo-Dears. Dorothy herself played violin and piano, and regularly attended concerts and nightclub performances at venues such as Mister Kellys in downtown Chicago. Among Dorothy’s favorite performers was Fats Domino, whom she was able to see live at a club in New Orleans; his $ “Blueberry Hill” was one of her favorite recordings, along with Linda Ronstadt’s version of “Blue Bayou.”

Addison man accused of aggravated DUI, fleeing and eluding

Court grants state’s motion to deny pre-trial release

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Addison Chief of Police Roy Selvik have announced that Judge Joshua Dieden granted the state’s motion Ivan Carrillo to deny pre-trial release for an Addison man accused of leading police on a high-speed chase after he had been drinking.

Ivan Carrillo, 25, appeared at First Appearance Court and is charged with one count of aggravated fleeing and eluding (Class 3 felony), one count of aggravated DUI (Class 4 felony) and one count of aggravated driving while license suspended (Class 4 felony) and a dozen misdemeanor and petty traffic offenses including reckless driving and unlawful possession of cannabis by driver.

On Thursday, Feb. 8 at approximately 10 p.m., Addison police officers on patrol entered a shopping

center parking lot located in the 100 block of N. Swift Road where they allegedly observed an individual, later identified as Carrillo, exit Game Time 190 Bar and Video Gaming, enter a 2002 Toyota Camry and drive away.

A short time later, officers allegedly observed Carrillo disobey a red light at Lake Street and John F. Kennedy Blvd. It is alleged that Carrillo then accelerated at a high rate of speed on Kennedy Blvd. onto westbound Army Trail Road, where he disobeyed a red light at Mill Road before entering northbound I-355.

Officers pursued Carrillo with their emergency lights and sirens onto northbound I-355 where Carrillo allegedly reached speeds of approximately 95 mph while weaving in and out of traffic. Officers ultimately terminated pursuit due to safety concerns.

A short time later, at approximately 10:36 p.m., officers observed Carrillo jogging through a park near his

home. He was taken into custody at that time. It is alleged that at the time of his arrest, Carrillo’s eyes were glassy and bloodshot, his speech was slow and there was an odor of alcohol emanating from his breath.

“The allegations that Mr. Carrillo not only led police on a high-speed chase, but did so after he had been drinking, are outrageous,” Berlin said. “Our public roadways are used by hundreds of thousands of people each day and we will not tolerate any type of behavior that puts innocent motorists at risk. Thankfully, Mr. Carrillo’s alleged actions did not harm anyone. I thank the Addison Police Department for their work and good judgement on this case.”

“Mr. Carrillo put lives in jeopardy with his reckless actions and complete disregard for the safety and well-being of others” Selvik said.

Carrillo’s next court appearance is scheduled Monday, March 4 for arraignment in front of Judge Daniel Guerin.

Jazz Festival welcomes orchestras of Count Basie, Maria Schneider Elmhurst University’s 57th annual event coming Feb. 22-25

Two internationally renowned jazz ensembles, the Legendary Count Basie Orchestra and the Maria Schneider Orchestra, will head to campus soon to perform at the Elmhurst University Jazz Festival, one of the oldest and best-known collegiate festivals in the country.

The lineup of acclaimed guest artists also includes trumpet player Orbert Davis, trombonist Marshall Gilkes, baritone sax player Gary Smulyan and guitarist Anthony Wilson. They all will also serve as adjudicators at the Festival, which takes place from Feb. 22–25.

Now in its 57th year, the Elmhurst University Jazz Festival welcomes top college and university jazz bands from across the country to take part in four days of performances and education. The bands take turns performing for some of the greatest names in professional jazz today, who offer critiques and honors, and then give a performance of their own.

The Festival schedule is: • The Jazz Festival kicks off on Thursday, Feb. 22, with the High School Invitational, made possible with the generous support of the Sylvia and William W. Gretsch Memorial Foundation.

• College and university band performances begin on Friday, Feb. 23. That evening’s feature performance will be given by The Legendary Count Basie Orchestra, directed by Scotty Barnhart with guest vocalist Carmen Bradford. Fresh off a 2024 Grammy win for Best Large Jazz Ensemble, for Basie Swings the Blues, the Count Basie Orchestra has continued to thrive even 40 years after the passing of its iconic founder. The orchestra has won more than 18 Grammy Awards and performed sold-out shows at every major jazz festival and concert hall in the world.

• On Saturday, Feb. 24, a clinic and master class with Maria Schneider begins another day of college performances, followed that evening with performances by the Elmhurst University Jazz Band and the Maria Schneider Orchestra. Critics have described Schneider’s music as “evocative, majestic, magical, heart-stoppingly gorgeous, imaginative, revelatory, riveting, daring, and beyond categorization.”

She is among the few to have received Grammy awards in multiple genres, including jazz and classical, and for her work with rock legend David Bowie.

• On the final day of the Festival, the program features more college and university performances and concludes with a performance by Davis, Gilkes, Smulyan and Wilson with the Elmhurst University Jazz Band.

Glenbard East sophomore Nadiia Shymkiv qualified for the IHSA girls wrestling individual state meet with her championship effort at the Schaumburg Sectional.

Shymkiv won the title in the sectional’s 105-pound weight class.

She won three matches at the sectional, which ended on Saturday, to improve her overall season record to 18-0.

Shymkiv delivered a major-decision win in her quarterfinal match in Schaumburg. She won her semifinal match with a third-period pin.

Shymkiv earned her victory in the 105-pound level’s first-place match with a second-period pin.

The top four finishers in each of the sectional’s weight levels qualified for the individual state meet, which will take place Feb. 23-24 in Bloomington.

Bell won her first two matches at the sectional before losing in the semifinal round.

Rams nearly reach the 100-point mark in win over East Aurora Glenbard East erupts for 38 third-quarter points in its 94-76 victory

The Glenbard East boys basketball team won two of three games last week to improve its overall season record to 14-16. The Rams posted two Upstate Eight Conference wins during the week to raise their conference record to 12-5.

Glenbard East began the week with a 69-38 non-conference loss at Deerfield on Feb. 5. The Rams earned a 94-76 conference win over East Aurora on Feb. 7 in Lombard. Glenbard East won a 71-62 conference battle at Elgin on Friday.

The Rams threatened to reach the 100-point mark in last week’s home game against East Aurora. Glenbard East trailed the Tomcats 21-18 at the end of the first quarter. The Rams owned a 41-36 halftime lead.

Glenbard East then exploded for 38 points during the third quarter to build a 79-55 advantage with eight minutes to play.

The Rams made seven shots from 3-point range during the third quarter of their Feb. 7 win over East Aurora.

Sophomore Danny Snyder made four 3-point attempts and scored a team-leading 18 points for the Rams in last week’s win over the Tomcats.

Snyder made three 3-point baskets during the third quarter.

Junior Devin Kraft added 16 points for Glenbard East. Senior Aleks Jajic provided 15 points. Sophomore Michael Nee and senior Ari Pierson contributed 13 and 12 points, respectively. Senior Gavin Bellezza supplied his team’s sixth double-digit scoring output of the game by pouring in all

11 of his points during the fourth quarter. Bellezza’s sudden 11-point burst included a pair of 3-point field goals.

Glenbard East sophomore Norman Loechel made two 3-point shots to score six points during the 94-point barrage against the Tomcats. Junior Mateo Villalvazo of the Rams contributed three points with a 3-point basket during the third quarter.

“That game was due,” said Glenbard East coach Eric Kelly after the Rams’ 94-76 win over East Aurora.

“We hadn’t been shooting the ball well. We can really shoot the ball. Tonight was a night where we had multiple guys making shots.”

Jajic scored a team-leading 21 points for Glenbard East in Friday’s conference win at Elgin. Nee supplied 15 points, while Pierson tallied 13 points.

The Rams led Elgin 31-23 at halftime. Glenbard East built a double-digit lead with a strong third quarter. The Maroons reduced Glenbard East’s lead during the fourth quarter, but the Rams hung on to earn the victory. Nee helped to seal the win with a pair of late free throws.

The Rams finished their regular season earlier this week with a conference home game against Bartlett.

Glenbard East will open the IHSA Class 4A post-season with a Feb. 21 game against Wheaton North at the Glenbard North Regional. The winner of that contest will face either Glenbard North or Addison Trail in the regional final on Feb. 23.

Broncos close out their regular season with a loss to Benet Academy Montini is hosting an IHSA Class 3A regional this week

The Montini Catholic girls basketball team completed its regular season with last week’s 63-58 loss to Benet Academy in Lisle.

The Broncos finished their regular season with an overall record of 24-7.

Benet led Montini 14-12 after one quarter of the Feb. 5 contest. The Redwings led the Broncos 33-25 at halftime and 44-42 at the end of the third quarter.

Montini senior Victoria Matulevicius scored a team-leading 23 points in last week’s loss at Benet. Junior Nikki Kerstein provided 18 points for the Broncos. Junior Shea Carver contributed nine points for Montini.

Senior Alyssa Epps and junior Lily Spanos supplied three points each.

Senior Riley White and junior Peyton Farrell scored one point each.

Rams qualify for the IHSA state meet Jenna Pitts wins an individual sectional title to lead Glenbard East’s team to a state-meet berth in Rockford

Glenbard East’s girls bowling team is headed for the IHSA state meet.

The Rams earned a berth in the state meet with their strong performance in Saturday’s 12-team Glenbard East Sectional at Bowlero in Glendale Heights. Competing at their home venue, the Rams delivered a third-place finish at the sectional to qualify for the state meet.

Glenbard East junior Jenna Pitts led the Rams to their third-place finish by winning the sectional’s individual title.

The top four teams in each of Saturday’s six sectionals qualified for the 24-team state meet, which takes place this Friday and Saturday at the Cherry Bowl in Rockford. The top 12 teams from this Friday’s action in Rockford will advance to this Saturday’s team finals.

South Elgin won the team title at the Glenbard East Sectional with its overall total of 5,512. Addison Trail posted a second-place score of 5,358. The Rams secured a thirdplace finish with their total pin count of 5,314. Morton earned a state-meet berth with its fourth-place score of 5,283.

Pitts fired a sensational six-game total of 1,347 at the sectional, which resulted in an average score of 224.5 per game. Pitts opened the event with a 202 in her first game. She then bowled a 206 in her second game before posting a brilliant 266 in her third game. Pitts closed out the sectional with scores of 200, 246 and 227 in her last three games of the day.

Senior Alexis Clayton of the Rams contributed a six-game sectional score of 1,076. Clayton began the competition with a 165 in her first game. She rolled her best game of the day—a 223—in her second game.

Clayton completed the sectional with games of 199, 167, 176 and 146.

Glenbard East freshman Zoey Poling compiled a six-game total of 1,056 at the sectional. After opening the event with a 164 in her first game, she bowled a 211 in her second game. She closed out the sectional with scores of 165, 154, 194 and 168 in her final four games.

Senior Nicole McCombs bowled five games for the Rams at Saturday’s sectional. She posted her best game of the day—a 191—in her fourth game.

Glenbard East senior Julianna Vasicek competed in four games at the sectional. She rolled her finest game of the event when she posted a 185 in her second game.

Freshman Jenna Pope bowled three games for the Rams at Saturday’s sectional. She turned in her best game of the event with a 158 in her second game.

Glenbard East’s team qualified for Saturday’s sectional with its fourthplace finish at the Hinsdale Central Regional on Feb. 3. The top four teams at the regional advanced to the sectional at the Rams’ home venue in Glendale Heights.

The Willowbrook girls bowling team, which won the championship at the 12-team Hinsdale Central Regional, posted an eighth-place finish at Saturday’s Glenbard East Sectional. The Warriors earned a team score of 5,024 at the sectional in Glendale Heights. That total was slightly higher than their first-place regional score of 4,992 at Suburbanite Bowl in Westmont on Feb. 3.

Willowbrook senior Jacquelyn Porro earns an individual berth in the state meet Senior Jacquelyn Porro of Willowbrook, who won the individual title at the Hinsdale Central Regional, finished second in the individual standings at Saturday’s sectional.

Porro earned an individual statemeet berth with her performance at the sectional. The event’s top five individuals who weren’t members of state-qualifying teams advanced to this week’s state meet.

Porro edged Pitts in the battle for the individual title at the Feb. 3 regional. Porro posted a six-game regional total of 1,204, while Pitts fired a second-place score of 1,192.

While Pitts amassed a first-place individual total of 1,347 at the sectional, Porro turned in a second-place score of 1,266—an average of 211 per game. Porro started the sectional with a 226 in her first game. She fired a 224 in her second game before rolling another 226 in her third game to deliver an excellent three-game score of 676.

Porro closed out the sectional with scores of 194, 203 and 193 in her final three games.

Willowbrook freshman Elizabeth Pettinger bowled a six-game sectional score of 1,056. She opened the event with a 199 in her first game.

After shooting a 137 in her second game, Pettinger completed the sectional with scores of 181, 180, 181 and 178 in her final four games.

Senior Lauren Carson rolled a six-game sectional total of 959 for the Warriors. She bowled her best game—a 200—in her final game of the day.

Willowbrook senior Annabelle Thompson bowled a six-game score of 955 at Saturday’s sectional. She fired her best game of the event when she rolled a 180 in her third game.

Senior Maddie Wolf of the Warriors competed in four games at the sectional. She turned in her best score of the day with a 158 in her first game. Senior Emma Anderlik participated in two sectional games for Willowbrook. She bowled a 142 in her best game of the day.

Senior Ciara Johnson, freshman Lilly Carver and freshman Teagan Murphy contributed nine points each for Glenbard East. Senior Livia Robbins supplied eight points. Junior Taylour Hodges tallied three points, while junior Erin Brown, junior Veronica Witt and sophomore Sarah Crocker scored two points each.

The Rams led East Aurora 16-2 after one quarter of last week’s meeting. Glenbard East’s lead grew to 33-12 by halftime and 52-16 by

The Warriors raced out to an 11-1 lead in the opening minutes of last week’s game against York. The Dukes rallied to cut Willowbrook’s lead to 15-13 by the end of the first quarter.

Omar Castro, 22, appeared at a bond hearing where Judge Michael Reidy set bond at $100,000.

when the officer located the vehicle, later determined to be driven by Castro, Castro put his car in reverse and proceeded southbound on Route 83. It is alleged that as the officer pursued, Castro reached speeds of approximately 107 mph in a 45-mph zone and disobeyed three traffic lights.

It is alleged that near 16th Street, Castro completed a U-turn and continued driving northbound on Route 83 reaching speeds of approximately 100 mph in a 35-mph construction zone, at which time the pursuing officer lost sight of the vehicle.

A short time later, the vehicle was located abandoned in a school parking lot. Officers responded to the school parking and at approximately 8:42 p.m., located Castro approximately one block away from the school. He was then taken into custody after a brief struggle with the officers.

Castro’s next court appearance is scheduled July 27 for arraignment in front of Judge Telander.

Willowbrook sophomore Otis Powell scored a basket to cut York’s lead to 42-39 with 3:26 left in the third quarter. The Dukes then closed the quarter with a 12-0 run to take a 54-39 lead with eight minutes to play.

Powell scored 27 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Warriors in last week’s loss to York. He made 11 of 18 field-goal attempts and sank all five of his shots from the freethrow line.

“Out of nowhere, there was a major gunfight for like 30 seconds,” eyewitness Bartosz Majerczyk told ABC 7 Eyewitness News. “I’d say, 60 plus rounds. You could tell it was two different groups of people shooting at each other.”

Another witness, who said she was at the celebration, told ABC 7 Eyewitness News “everybody started running” when the gunfire erupted.

“There was a man,” she said. “He fell on top of me. He had a gunshot wound to his leg. It was like something you can’t imagine.”

In a statement, Governor JB Pritzker said he is closely monitoring the shooting.

“Gathering for a holiday celebration should be a joyful occasion, not a time when gunfire erupts and families are forced to run for safety,” Gov. Pritzker said. “As I’ve said time and

health emergency in this country and I remain committed to banning these dangerous weapons and making our state safer for everyone.”

Meadows was described as a “devoted father whose life was tragically taken from us amidst a Juneteenth celebration” on a GoFundMe page set up to provide support to his two young children, RJ and Gabby.

Meadows was “a beacon of love and strength, who fell victim to a devastating crossfire incident that shattered the peace and joy of what should have been a day of celebration.

“Amidst the chaos, Reggie tragically lost his life, leaving an indelible mark of grief on his family and community. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the other victims who were injured, as we mourn the loss of Reggie, a remarkable individual who touched the lives of many.”

Florida man charged with leading police on high-speed chase

when the officer located the vehicle, later determined to be driven by Castro, Castro put his car in reverse and proceeded southbound on Route 83. It is alleged that as the officer pursued, Castro reached speeds of approximately 107 mph in a 45-mph zone and disobeyed three traffic lights.

It is alleged that near 16th Street, Castro completed a U-turn and continued driving northbound on Route 83 reaching speeds of approximately 100 mph in a 35-mph construction zone, at which time the pursuing officer lost sight of the vehicle.

A short time later, the vehicle was located abandoned in a school parking lot. Officers responded to the school parking and at approximately 8:42 p.m., located Castro approximately one block away from the school. He was then taken into custody after a brief struggle with the officers.

Castro’s next court appearance is scheduled July 27 for arraignment in front of Judge Telander.

The Willowbrook girls basketball team wrapped up its regular season with last week’s 87-45 loss at Lyons Township in La Grange. The Feb. 6 game was a matchup of teams from the West Suburban Conference’s two levels, with Willowbrook representing the Gold level and the Lions representing the Silver level.

Lyons Township led the Warriors 18-10 after one quarter and 46-20 at halftime.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Villa Park Chief of Police Michael Rivas announced that bond has been set for a Florida man accused of leading Omar Castro police on a high-speed chase.

Omar Castro, 22, appeared at a bond hearing where Judge Michael Reidy set bond at $100,000.

Castro is charged with two counts of aggravated fleeing and eluding a police officer (Class 4 felony) and multiple misdemeanor and petty traffic offenses including two counts of aggravated speeding in a construction zone, reckless driving and driving while license suspended, all Class A misdemeanors.

Blazers’ girls bowling team qualifies for the IHSA state meet Addison Trail turns in a second-place finish at the Glenbard East Sectional

The Addison Trail girls bowling team will compete in this week’s IHSA state meet.

The Blazers earned their berth in the state meet with their second-place finish in Saturday’s Glenbard East Sectional at Bowlero in Glendale Heights.

The top four teams at the section-

al qualified for the state meet, which takes place this Friday and Saturday at the Cherry Bowl in Rockford.

The meet will feature a total of 24 teams—the top four teams from each of Saturday’s six sectionals.

Broncos pick up three straight victories Petersen connects on nine 3-point shots and scores 31 points in Saturday’s win

The Montini Catholic boys basketball team won three straight games last week to improve its overall season record to 13-18.

The Broncos opened the week with a decisive 66-17 victory at Providence-St. Mel on Feb. 6. Montini earned home wins on Friday and Saturday. The Broncos defeated Aurora Central Catholic 64-34 on Friday. Montini beat Lombard’s College Preparatory School of America (CPSA) 61-41 on Saturday.

The Broncos took an early 12-0 lead in Friday’s game against Aurora Central Catholic. Montini led the visiting Chargers 15-4 at the end of the first quarter. The Broncos owned a 25-17 halftime lead. Montini’s lead grew to 45-27 by the end of the third quarter.

Senior Danny Petersen made three 3-point baskets and scored 17 points for the Broncos in Friday’s victory.

Junior Jack Barrett, who made a pair of 3-point shots, added 11 points for Montini. Senior Nick Lombardi sank two 3-point attempts and contributed eight points. Junior Drew Church, who drained a 3-point attempt in the first quarter, supplied seven points.

The Broncos led CPSA 14-10 after one quarter of Saturday’s contest.

The visiting Thunder took a 22-20 lead during the second quarter, but Montini went on an 8-0 run to take a 28-22 halftime lead. The Broncos’ lead expanded to 49-34 by the end of the third quarter.

Petersen delivered a red-hot performance from 3-point range during Saturday’s win. He sank nine 3-point attempts and scored 31 points to lead the Broncos to the victory. Petersen made a pair of 3-point shots in the first quarter. He connected on three 3-point attempts in the second quarter and made three more 3-point baskets in the third quarter. He tacked on one more 3-point field goal early in the fourth quarter.

Montini senior Maddox Shepherd provided 12 points in Saturday’s win. Senior Tyler Pavlik added eight points.

The Broncos will begin post-season play with a semifinal game at the IHSA Class 2A Northridge Prep Regional in Niles on Feb. 21. If Montini wins the regional semifinal, it will likely face Northridge Prep in the regional final on Feb. 23.

The 12 Broncos earned their trips to the state meet by posting top-four finishes in their respective weight levels at the Class 2A Grayslake Central Individual Sectional, which ended on Saturday.

Four Montini wrestlers won championships at the sectional.

Four other Broncos qualified for the state meet with third-place finishes.

Senior Olivia Broyles of the Glenbard East girls gymnastics team concluded her season by competing in last week’s IHSA sectional at Wheaton Warrenville South High School. Broyles competed in the sectional’s uneven bars event. She also participated in the Feb. 8 sectional’s all-around competition.

Broyles is pictured during her sectional routine on the uneven bars, which earned a 31st-place score of 7.625. Broyles finished 28th in the sectional’s all-around standings with her total of 31.4.
