Students to showcase their tech know-how Bensenville Elementary School District 2 will host the Students Involved with Technology (SIT) Conference for the first time on Saturday, Feb. 20.

Throughout the day, students will present technology they’ve learned in classrooms and school clubs and passion projects they’ve worked on at home alongside major tech players, including Jason Camberis, who earned a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records for building the world’s largest arcade machine.

Nearly 250 students from Bensenville and surrounding communities have registered for the conference, open to grades three through 12, which will be held at Blackhawk Middle School from 8:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. These students will have the unique opportunity to learn about technology from their peers, making it more accessible and more possible than ever before.

The conference will kick off with a keynote address from Blackhawk Middle School and Fenton High School alum Marcin Kleczynski, who started tech company Malwarebytes at age 18 and was named Forbes’ 2015 30 Under 30 in Enterprise Technology.

President’s Weekend seminar sheds light on Lincoln’s legal career ELMHURST — For 23 years, Abraham Lincoln rode Central Illinois’ Eighth Judicial Circuit, building his law practice and his political base through his relationships with the circuit lawyers and their judge, David Davis.

Abraham Lincoln’s legal career will be the subject of an in-depth seminar at Elmhurst Historical Museum on Saturday, Feb. 13.

A team of lawyers, led by Davis, gained the Republican nomination for Lincoln at the Convention in Chicago in May of 1860. The split of the Democratic Party made the nomination tantamount to election. The circuit, with its leaders and its lawyers, was truly Lincoln’s “ladder to the presidency.”

In honor of Lincoln and in

celebration of President’s Day, the Elmhurst Historical Museum presents an in-depth seminar on Saturday, Feb. 13, titled, “Lincoln on the Eighth Judicial Circuit.”

The Lincoln seminar will feature Guy Fraker, a Bloomington attorney who has made an avocation of following in Lincoln’s footsteps during Abe’s two decades as a circuit-riding lawyer in downstate Illinois. Fraker is the author of Lincoln’s Ladder to the Presidency: The Eighth Judicial Circuit, and he has presented numerous programs throughout the state on Lincoln’s legal career and political climb.

This special presidential learning opportunity takes place at the Elmhurst Historical Museum’s Education Center, located at 120 E. Park Ave. in Elmhurst from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. The cost is $25 for members of the Elmhurst Heritage Foundation and $30 for non-members. Truck arrives at new Elmhurst-Yorkfield Food Pantry building

Volunteers for the Elmhurst-Yorkfield Food Pantry unload a shipment of 4 skids from the Northern Illinois Food Bank. The Elmhurst-Yorkfield Food Pantry opened their brand new facility at 1083 S. York Road in Elmhurst on Jan. 2. The new debt-free facility was made possible by the contributions of more than 500 donors which included individuals, community groups, churches and local businesses.

The planes continue “overhead” and the entire scene evolves into that of what appeared to be a video game. Suddenly, unfamiliar “players” are seen in the planes, preparing for battle as the camera pans over to show

an entire metropolis collapsing all around and into a river or lake. The whole area is ablaze, ships on the water are sinking, and buildings are falling to the ground in large clumps, as the skies rain fire, smoke and whoknows-what toxic chemicals.

Then it becomes a commercial for the movie, as the pilots of those planes fly in to apparently save the day – in 120 minutes.

The bothersome thing was the early presentation of a patriotic message – the football field itself is more or less a symbol for America. Then add the colors of the flag, the uniformed soldiers, the flyover, all to the sounds of our National Anthem. Nothing could be more patriotic. It was disappointing when the camera swooped over into an entirely different commercial – for what appeared to be a videogame. The buildings, the fire and smoke, everything about that scene was done in the graphics of a video

game. The patriotic beginning was in “real life.”

When the commercial began, a thought came to mind. “How nice to see a display of patriotism,” but then again, the Super Bowl and the NFL do always seem to get it right when it comes to remembering those in the armed forces. Some sort of tribute or salute has always taken place, usually before the coin toss, every year we have been at war and at least something in the years between.

Imagine the dismay when the patriotic display evolved into a video game or actually, a movie set. It worried me that our young people may associate graphic shooting from fancy jets with numerous buttons that destroy their enemies with a single tap is what it’s like to serve in the military.

I already worry that young people seem to have less and less regard for the flag and their country. There’s always chatter in the stands during the National Anthem before a football game (and it’s not just the kids). The Elmhurst VFW is already gone and the American Legion is struggling. Members of Color Guard at Memorial Day and Veterans Day get older and older every year. Is there no new blood coming up, bringing up the rear?

No replacement forces?

Maybe it’s old-fashioned thinking, but wouldn’t you prefer patriotism pure in its display?

Let’s keep the graphic shoot ‘em up movies, video games and their subsequent crossover toys, TV series, songs, apparel, jewelry and other endorsement products off by themselves. Lest we get them confused.

Addison Feb. 5 • Manuel Gomez, 21, of Addison, was arrested on the 600 block of No. Highview at about 1:30 a.m. for possession of cannabis. According to the police report, Gomez was issued an ordinance citation and released on an I-bond.

• Richardo Gomez-Gomez, 23, of Addison, was arrested on the 600 block of No. Highview at about 1:30 a.m. for possession of drug paraphernalia.

• Lorenzo Sanchez, 48, of Addison, was arrested near Myrick & Normandy at about 9:15 p.m. According to the police report, Sanchez was stopped for speeding, then found to be driving on an expired license. He as released on an I-bond.

Feb. 3 • Juan Caudillo-Covarrubias, 22, of Chicago, was arrested near Lake & Lincoln at about 9:15 p.m. According

to the police report, CaudilloCovarrubias was stopped for speeding. At that time, it was determined that he was driving on a suspended driver’s license and was wanted on an active Failure to Appear warrant. He was processed for the above charges. Ten percent bond was paid on the warrant and a new court date was issued. An I-bond was issued for the traffic charges and he was released.

• Kevin Palomino, 22, of Elgin, was arrested on the 700 block of W. Army Trail at about 11:30 p.m. According to the police report, Palomino was arrested for unlawful use of a weapon, possession of drug equipment, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and driving with an expired registration plate. It was determined that he had an outstanding warrant from Cook County. Palomino was processed for those charges and then was transported to DuPage County Jail for the warrant.

Senior year: Making memories that last a lifetime

T

his is my third senior year. Fourth if I count my own, but that was eons ago, before I understood the impact senior year could have. My third child and second son experienced his last first day in September and in just few short months (and they will be short) he will graduate from high school. (Oh, I hope so.)

It’s his senior year; a time filled with “lasts,” and even though he is my third, each of his lasts still tugs at my heart as though it is a first. I suppose that’s because senior year is a time like no other. Magical for some; haunting for a few, but a period that will be etched in each student’s memory for eternity, like it is etched in mine and probably yours as well.

worst – of times and as a mom I yearn for the former. Best experiences. Best classes. Best teachers. Best friends. Best sports seasons. Best homecoming. Best decisions. Best report card. (Oh, I hope so.)

shoot hoops in the driveway or work on homework in the dining room. Next year they will scatter across the state or the country in pursuit of education and employment. Each will experience a new and exciting adventure, but certainly not together like they have been for years. I find myself selfishly missing that already.

He and his classmates are at the pinnacle. They are the oldest in the school, with the potential to be leaders there – at the top of their own world.

It is fleeting, but most good things are. I want him – I want all of them – to enjoy this time together, with a carefree abandon, as though it will never end, even though it will before even the most ready of them are ready for it.

I want them to study hard,

but to play hard as well. To be kind and thoughtful to underclassmen, because it wasn’t long ago that this year’s seniors were the young guns (and next year they will be in that position again). To continue making good choices, because the bad ones somehow seem to take on more appeal during the last year of high school.

Senior year. It is a time of freedom, when prom and playoffs take precedence and tuition payments, cell phone bills and doing your own laundry are blips on the radar. It’s when your independence is more about increased privileges than increased responsibilities.

When grown-ups are just that and they still take care of you, for the most part, at least.

All too soon, this year’s seniors will come to under-

stand there is more to cooking than frozen pizza, student loans must be repaid, you can’t go through your entire life borrowing your parents’ vacuum and a car with good gas mileage is a sound investment. They will learn all these serious and important facts of life – eventually, some day, in good time.

For now, those things can wait. It is senior year. Prom is approaching and tennis season will be here before you know it. And I want each of them to enjoy every last second of all the great memories they’ve still yet to make. (Oh, I hope so.)

materialistic. It’s about honoring you and feeling good in your daily surroundings. Functional things can feel good, i.e., the toothbrush. And other stuff you encounter regularly.

My desk is a lovely wood slab, formerly a dining room table.

My paperweight is one I made at glass blowing class with my beloved. My votive candle holder has a blingy heart on it. I drink my endless water from a glass that I bought in France.

None of these items are pricey or any big deal to anyone but me.

This stuff makes me happy. And, newsflash, it is good to be happy.

There’s another proclamation: It is good to be happy.

Somewhere along the way, we have been beaten down to think happy does not matter. It’s pretty much all that does. Baby steps can get you there. Implementing new tweaks to your lifestyle can be just as gratifying as mak-

ing drastic major changes and so much easier. Getting happier starts with these small instances of letting go.

No stranger to waste not want not mentality and the unwritten law of one must use up every last drop of something before tossing it, my letting go changes have been gradual. I had a chapstick that practically tugged my mouth off my face instead of gliding smoothly over my lips and yet it was difficult for me to toss it.

But I did. No one barged in to arrest me for any crime and I was empowered to get a lip balm that feels nice.

Then I attacked the various jars and drawers of pens. If a pen didn’t write, trashed. If it did, but I don’t like how it feels (hmm, smooth gliding is my theme today), then it went to the donation pile. Now every pen I grab will write and will feel good in my hand and on the paper. Little

things mean a lot.

Start small. Lips, pens, toothbrush, tush. Once you get used to little niceties here and there, feel free to go whole hog zipping through the house like Merry Maids on speed doing an overall purge. Love it? It stays. If not, say bye-bye. There is someone else who will appreciate your donations.

Making room in your life for what you love brings more of it.

ove is a word with unlimited applications, and is an incredibly helpful guiding force. When shopping, if I don’t love an item, I don’t buy it. That means I don’t impulse buy shoes, earrings or sweaters anymore. I pause and ponder if I truly love it. I like a lot of things, but love is the deciding factor.

Having love as my barometer also means I love my toothbrush and my toilet paper. If something doesn’t feel good and work well, it does not stay at the Joy House.

Life is profoundly different when you surround yourself with the little stuff that you love. It doesn’t have to be hard to start making progress toward creating your own joy house. Do you like your toilet paper? Ever even

49th Annual Elmhurst College Jazz Festival begins Feb. 25 Each February, the Elmhurst College Jazz Festival welcomes the industry’s top professional musicians and the nation’s leading college bands for three days of performances and education. The college bands take turns performing for some of the greatest names in professional jazz today, who offer critiques and award honors in a variety of areas. Then the professionals conclude each night of the Festival with an exciting performance of their own.

The Festival begins at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 25, with the High School Invitational, and concludes with a performance on Sunday, Feb. 28, by Festival artists/adjudicators with the Elmhurst College Jazz Band.

Beginning at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 26, and Saturday, Feb. 27, award-winning collegiate jazz ensembles from around the country will perform. Friday’s evening session begins at 7:30 p.m. with performances by college

ensembles and will conclude with a performance by Ryan Truesdell’s Gil Evans Project.

Saturday evening’s session begins at 7:30 p.m. and closes with a performance by the Bob Mintzer Big Band.

Sunday’s session begins at 11:30 a.m. and concludes with the Elmhurst College Jazz Band in concert with artists/adjudicators Michael Davis, Donny McCaslin and Scott Wendholt.

January recipient of 88’s Best is Nicole Pudlo ADDISON — Nicole Pudlo has been named as Addison Trail’s January recipient of 88’s Best recognition for her stellar involvement in extracurricular activities. Pudlo, a senior, was recognized during the Jan. 25 District 88 Board of Education meeting.

Even before she became a Blazer, Nicole knew the importance of being involved. Nicole also is successful academically and has taken 12 Advanced Placement (AP)/college-level courses and nine Honors courses. She also speaks fluent Polish and has taken six years of Spanish, making her trilingual.

She has participated in Polish school for 14 years and has earned awards in Polish school competitions. She also was a member of the group of District 88 students who traveled to Spain for an educational trip last year.

But where Nicole has really made her mark is in athletics and activities. Nicole started her involvement at her junior high school, Indian Trail, through peer mediation. Nicole’s involvement and leadership includes volleyball, basketball, Pay It Forward, International Dance, National Honor Society, Student Council, Key Club and Student Advisory Team. She also has had leadership positions in many extracurricular activities, including Historian and Sergeant of Arms for Student Council and Pay It Forward CORE team member and CORE leader. She also has been a Blazer Ambassador, mentoring freshmen and getting them acclimated to high school life.

Pudlo has participated in many leadership conferences as well, namely CORE trainings and many West Suburban Conference Leadership symposiums.

“Pudlo is a stellar student, who excels both in and outside of the classroom,” said Kevin Redding, Director of Guidance. “Her work ethic is second to none among her peers.

However, her strongest asset

is her positive attitude toward life. Her commitment to the classroom is matched by her commitment to extracurricular activities. Pudlo is an extremely likeable student, with innate leadership skills.”

Girls Volleyball Head Coach Dan Styler said Nicole’s ability to stay focused and determined in the face of adversity is an attribute that helps her succeed.

“Pudlo proved to be resilient by overcoming an ACL surgery (after an injury her sophomore year),” he said. “While others would cower away from this setback, Pudlo overcame her fears and was able to embrace competition once again during the latter half of her high school career. The high expectations Pudlo set for herself on the court and in the classroom will guide her path to success beyond the walls of Addison Trail.”

Nicole has applied to many universities, and her current top choice is Northwestern University. Nicole plans to major in kinesiology or exercise science and would like to be a physical therapist. She also has considered teaching, but will wait to start courses to see what interests her the most.

In celebration of Evans’s 100th birthday in 2012, Truesdell recorded 10 such works on the album Centennial: Newly Discovered Works of Gil Evans. A second album of Evans’s music, Lines of Color, was released in 2014 and presents Ryan’s band live at New York City’s Jazz Standard. This new music will be presented in concert at the Festival.

•Scott Wendholt is an articulate, passionate and lyrical trumpeter who approaches music with energy and spirit. He has worked extensively with artists such as Kenny Garrett, Cyrus Chestnut, Christian McBride, Bruce Barth and Vincent Herring. Wendholt also has performed with many of the best big bands in the world, including the Carnegie Hall Big Band, the Maria Schneider Orchestra and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra.

•Under the direction of Doug Beach, the Elmhurst College Jazz Band has earned worldwide acclaim. In June of 2014, the Downbeat Magazine Student Music Awards named the Jazz Band the undergraduate college winner in the Large Jazz Ensemble category. The band has performed across Western and Eastern Europe, as well as in Indonesia, the Bahamas, Canada and in festivals across the United States.

The Addison Trail girls bowling team had plenty to celebrate recently.

At the varsity level, Molly Schmelter was named to the all-West Suburban Conference team after averaging a 156 in league play.

“That honor was welldeserved for Molly,” said Addison Trail coach Steve Gilliam.

“Molly had been sick lately and that brought her average down, but she is on the upswing and has been solid.”

Senior Susana Silva was named to the all-WSC academic team thanks to her 4.03 grade-point average.

Senior Anaitza Roman earned a medal at the WSC tournament for having one of the top nine series.

“Anaitza was consistent throughout her six games in the tournament,” said Gilliam.

“She was picking up spares and putting the ball in the pocket.

She was very solid that day.”

The Blazers’ junior-varsity team also enjoyed success at the WSC JV tournament. Laura Gamble rolled a personal-best 151 game and had a 118 average. Liz Cruz bowled a person-

“This means a lot to me,” he said. “It’s been a goal of mine for a while. All the hard work has paid off. I just went out there and played for my teammates to benefit the team more than just myself.”

Jones, who plans to study psychology, also was impressed with Whitewater’s strong football tradition.

“I love Whitewater’s football program,” he said. “What also drove me there is they have the right mindset to win games.

I’ve been waiting for this for a long time.

Jones said basketball was his original passion when he was younger.

“I’m interested in being a doctor,” he said. “I’m not sure I would enjoy the stress of being a main surgeon, but oral surgery is something that interests me.”

Degnan is following in the footsteps of his father, who played college basketball.

“This means a lot,” he said.

“My dad played college basketball and said he loved the experience. I have the opportunity to play football. Not too many people have that opportunity.”

Degnan, an all-conference and academic all-state selection this past season, saw himself improve in various categories this past season.

“My decision-making got a lot better,” said Degnan, who has a 3.8 grade-point average.

“I felt my arm strength was there and I was making the right reads. I knew the situations and would take what the defense would give me.”

Degnan, who played youth football for the Lombard Falcons for a year and then with the Warriors youth program, also had high praise for the Willowbrook coaching staff, particularly Hildreth and quarterbacks coach Mike Marotta.

“Coach Marotta helped me all four years and helped make me who I am today,” said Degnan.

“Coach Hildreth gave me every opportunity to get to this point.”

The Riverside-Brookfield boys basketball team has been ranked among the best teams in the Chicagoland area for much of the season.

And IC Catholic Prep gave R-B all it could handle and then some in a recent 71-66 Metro Suburban Conference West Division loss.

R-B led 18-14 after the first quarter, but the Knights used a 22-16 second quarter to take a 36-34 lead into halftime. R-B outscored IC Catholic Prep 19-13 in the third quarter and 28-27 in the fourth quarter.

Austin Reed led the Knights with 19 points. He hit five 3-pointers. Will Lyles had 18 points (4-for-5 free throws), while Matt Sutton had nine points (3 three-pointers) and Troy Burrows had eight points (two 3-pointers). Garrett Cheng had six points. The Knights made 10 three-pointers in the game.

coach TJ Tyrrell. “We played one of our best games of the year. We were up two at half and the kids slowed things down and let the game come to them. We had a lot of different guys contribute. They played their hearts out against R-B. I’m extremely proud of their effort and the enthusiasm from our bench. This shows we can play with anybody if we play the game the right way.”

IC Catholic Prep was down by two points with 38 seconds left in the game. R-B missed the front end of a pair of 1-and1 free-throw opportunities and grabbed the rebound both times.

“We had two chances there,” said Tyrrell. “They got the rebound both times and ended up going up by five.”

Reed also had six assists in the game, while Cheng had seven points and four assists.

Jordan Rowell had six rebounds and three assists.

“Even though it was a tough loss, the coaches all are extremely pleased with the effort and focus of the kids,” said Tyrrell. “It was a fun game to be involved with.”

The Knights were 11-11 overall through late last week and were 2-6 in MSC West play.

IC Catholic Prep played Fenton earlier this week and heads to Wheaton Academy for another conference game Friday.

“We have the talent to compete with anybody,” said Tyrrell. “Our regional (Class 2A) is wide open. Getting the guys to believe it and click at the right time is the challenge of the coaching staff and the team. Hopefully we are in line for a strong playoff run here.”

Earlier, IC Catholic Prep lost to St. Edward in a MSC West game in Elgin.

“We got in a hole early against St. Ed’s,” said Tyrrell.

“That was the third time we played them. The first quarter set the pace for the rest of the game. We were able to cut it to five in the fourth, but they knocked down their free throws. It was a tough outing for us. We shot 4-for-28 from three and had 12 turnovers in the first half. We only had two turnovers in the second half.

We played much better in the second half, but the first half put us in a bad situation.”
