County Board approves 2019 budget

No property tax increase for 11th year in a row

The DuPage County Board approved the 2019 budget on Tuesday, Nov. 27, marking the 11th consecutive year the County has passed a budget with no property tax increase.

The 2019 budget is $433.8 million, down $5.8 million from the previous fiscal year. The approved budget includes a full-time headcount of 2,167, which is down from 2,270 in 2010.

The 2019 spending plan includes $38 million in total capital including projects for stormwater, drainage and road construction. The property tax levy remains flat for the 11th year in a row at $66.9 million.

The budget includes a $100,000 allocation to continue the fight against heroin in DuPage County.

The DuPage County budget took effect Dec. 1.

The Elmhurst Artists’ Guild (EAG) will host its Winter Members Show in the EAG Gallery at the Elmhurst Art Museum (EAM), 150 S. Cottage Hill Ave., in Elmhurst’s Wilder Park. The show will feature a wide variety of work from EAG members and runs now through Jan. 4, 2019. An opening reception for the artists will take place on Friday, Dec. 14 from 7 to 9 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.

Charlene Lee Freislinger, president of EAG, urges the community to support local artists this holiday season.

“There’s a lot of new and exciting work from our members,” she said.

One of the many works that will be displayed is Intersection

by Michael Schmidt. The artist proclaims the piece to be as much a painting as it is a sculpture. It is a small, abstract work that incorporates acrylic paint and constructed wooden blocks. Schmidt says making the piece was more experimental for him than others and hopes to make larger works in the future.

Artist Jennifer Starchvill will be showcasing Get Set Go, an abstracted acrylic painting on canvas from her “Glyph” series. She started this series to “depersonalize” her creations, so she could more comfortably part with them after a sale. However, they remain somewhat personal.

Starchvill said.

Light and color inspire artist Terri Shimkus who will be exhibiting her oil painting, Spectrum.

Most of the art in the Winter Members Show is available for purchase. EAG offers art buyers and young collectors the opportunity to acquire original contemporary artwork by emerging, local

artists.

Addison Trail girls gymnastics team Willowbrook opens season at Glenbard West quad girls bowling team Rumps, Theodore, Scarbaggio headline list of returning gymnasts off to hot start Warriors win own quad; Take third at Plainfield Central Invite

By Mike Miazga, CORRESPONDENT The Willowbrook girls bowling team is off to the races.

The Warriors recently won their own quad against Addison Trail, Morton and Metea Valley and also took third in the Plainfield Central invitational.

At Plainfield, Willowbrook was led by Holly Helsper and Katie Pettinger, who had the squad’s top two scores.

“The real great thing about the invite was we were very consistent,” said Willowbrook coach Kevin Allen. “The girls battled all day and were able to jump past York in the last game to finish in third place.”

In the Willowbrook quad, Helsper led all bowlers with a 609 series that included games of 187, 200 and 222. Makaylah Jones bowled a 257 in her last game. “Makaylah had the big game of the day,” said Allen.

“That game helped seal the victory for us.”

Helsper and Jones are Willowbrook’s top two average leaders through late last week.

They were part of a Warriors team that took second in the West Suburban Conference last season. Helsper, a senior, averaged 185 and was third in the WSC last season. She took second in the sectional and was an all-state bowler after placing 11th at the state tournament.

Jones, a junior, averaged 170 a year ago and earned all-conference honors. She won the regional and took fourth in the sectional.

Pettinger, a senior, averaged 172 and was an all-conference selection.

Pettinger won the Leyden 6X6 invite and also had numerous big games for the team, Allen noted. “Katie bowls in the leadoff position and always gives us the spark we are looking for,” he added.

Senior Brianna Bryant averaged 171 and also was an all-WSC performer. She had a 241 game in one of the biggest matches of the season last year for the Warriors, Allen pointed out.

Allen added Willowbrook has a good number of incoming freshmen to the program this season. “We are excited about that,” he said. “The new girls on the team are really taking a liking to bowling and are starting to purchase some of their own equipment. They are dedicated to the sport and are working their hardest to improve throughout this year.”

Willowbrook is experience-heavy in its starting lineup with five senior starters and one junior starter. “All of these girls have been in the program since they were freshmen,” said Allen. “They know the expectations, drills and what it is going to take to be successful. All six girls went down to state last season, which is great experience for the team.

The girls are extremely confident in themselves and never give up. We always are there for each other and we know what it takes as a team in order for us to be successful.”

Allen said Helsper, Jones and Pettinger have been bowling extremely well to start the season. “They are able to throw up big games at any time,” he said. “They work extremely hard at practice and during matches to make the best shots possible. All three of these girls have been able to have success so they know how much work it takes to get to that point. With their confidence and experience they will help the younger girls develop throughout the season.”

Allen said his bowlers have been working hard on keeping the ball in play. “We are trying to make sure that if the shot is tough and we’re having a hard time striking that we are able to get spares and fill frames,” he said. “That is the big motto this year—fill frames and keep us in play,” he said.

Allen added keeping the confidence level high will be a key. “Never lose our confidence and keep working hard,” he said. “We need to make sure we are able to keep working at the game and just keep getting better throughout the season.”

With the amount of experience the Warriors have, Allen said the team feels like “a big family.”

The Addison Trail girls gymnastics team opened the 2018-2019 season by placing third at the recent Glenbard West quad meet.

Coach Kyle Padera’s squad returns senior Maddie Rumps and sophomores Lexi Theodore and Francesca Scarbaggio from last year’s team that placed in the top three in the West Suburban Conference Gold Division. Rumps, Theodore and Scarbaggio all are all-around performers.

Freshman Delaney Gregory is a key newcomer to the squad and also

is an all-around gymnast.

“We have a young team, but an enthusiastic team,” said Padera. “We have a lot of fresh faces in the gym that are working as hard as I have seen in a long time. They are having a lot of fun and learning some gymnastics along the way.”

Padera said the competitive level of this group has taken a step forward. “They have weathered some pretty tough competitions in the past,” he noted. “I think we are getting better at competing and being competitive, which is a great strength.”

Padera said the Blazers are strongest on floor exercise, “probably because it is the least scary,” he said.

Padera added keys to the season include staying healthy and being

mentally strong.

Scarbaggio qualified for sectionals last year as a freshman. “Francesca was our only sectional qualifier last year,” said Padera, who noted Rumps also is another gymnast to keep an eye out for as she starts her senior year. “I hope Francesca is able to build on that success.”

Padera said the mood in the practice gym is yet another big strength of the group. “They are hilarious and are a fun group to work with,” he said.

The coach noted he’d like to see his squad up in that top-three area of the conference again. “I think we will be middle of the pack,” he said.

“We placed in the top three last year at conference and I would love to see us up there again.”

Willowbrook girls gymnastics team kicks off season Warriors Varsity, JV place 4th at invite

The Willowbrook girls gymnastics team placed fourth recently on both the varsity and junior-varsity levels at the Glenbard West Invitational.

Willowbrook also competed in the Hinsdale Central freshman invite where Tess Placek was second on vault with a 9.1 score, eighth on beam at 8.1, sixth on floor at 8.3 and finished sixth in the all-around with a 32.6.

Willowbrook’s top returning gymnast this season is junior Karli Wilson, who qualified for sectionals in the all-around a year ago.

“Karli continues to make her presence known on the team,” said Willowbrook coach Deanna Zuchowski. “She pushes the rest of the team to be better.”

Zuchowski said the practice gym has been filled with excitement since the start of the season.

“The girls are excited to start a new season,” she said. “We have a

few gymnasts back who were injured at the end of the year and are starting with the same drive that they left from their shortened seasons last year.”

Zuchowski lauded the efforts of seniors Caitlyn Owen and Autumn Palacios. “Caitlyn and Autumn have stepped up to manage the team and help with the understanding of success on a young team,” she said.

“These girls have been able to get the girls motivated to practice and explain things that happened last year during the season to help with pushing toward success this season.

Caitlyn Owen knows this is her last year of gymnastics and is very excited to push her skills to a new level.”

Freshman Placek also has shown promise in the early going. “Tess is a new and exciting gymnast to watch,” said Zuchowski. “She is determined to reach her goals and already is adding new tricks and depth to each of her routines.”

Zuchowski added the Warriors are fully engaged in the team concept.

“Team above all else is our motto— to continue the pride of accomplishing something as a team and not as a

lone individual,” she said.

In terms of event strength, Zuchowski said the Warriors are strongest on beam and floor exercise. “Beam and floor continue to be our strongest events,” she said. “The girls are very motivated by each other on each of the events.”

The coach said keys for a successful season include continuing to motivate each other and push each other looking toward the future of the team.

“I have an all-around great group of girls on the team,” said Zuchowski. “Each of the levels have gymnasts who want to work hard and become successful for their teammates. I hear in the gym confidence and assistance to those who need it.

They all are amazing.”

Zuchowski is looking for another competitive year in the West Suburban Conference Gold Division.

“The best part of our conference is it always is competitive in nature at each of the meets,” he said. “Whoever the first-place or last-place team is, they always are striving for perfection and the need to do well in each of the competitions.”

Fenton wrestling team young, but talented Bison looking to continue program’s long tradition of success

Fenton’s wrestling program has a string of recent sustained success that it would like to keep rolling on.

The Bison won the Metro Suburban Conference title for a fifth year in a row last season. Fenton has won 10

of the last 12 conference titles. Additionally, the Bison won the Fenwick regional team title, which qualified it for the dual-team sectional portion of the state tournament.

Fenton finished in the top 16 in the state in Class 2A. The Bison have won three regional team titles in a row. The Bison lost to Antioch in the dual-team sectional semifinals in their attempt to qualify for the dual-team state tournament.
