Board of Education president Wedemann wins Equity Award from ISBE
The Illinois State Board of Education selected Fenton School Board President Paul Wedemann as the 2020 recipient of the Thomas Lay Burroughs Award, which recognizes one elected official per year who demonstrates extraordinary leadership on behalf of education at the local level. The award specifically focuses on leadership that closes achievement gaps, expands educational opportunities for underserved students, and results in more equitable outcomes during a crisis. Created in 1991 in memory of the late ISBE Chairman Tom Burroughs, the award is presented each November at a conference hosted jointly by the Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB), the Illinois Association of School Administrators, and the Illinois Association of School Business Officials. That conference was cancelled this year. Wedemann was honored during the November 19 ISBE virtual board meeting. In his acceptance speech, he shared the recognition with current and past Fenton 100 school board members, as well as current and past employees who all brought valuable recommendations or performed many of the challenging tasks. “Finally, I want to share this award with our amazing students, their parents, and the community members who embraced The Bison Way and supported our efforts through thick and thin,” Wedemann said. “In fact, this is less of an award and more of a sign that we at Fenton High School are on the right track.” Wedemann, who has served on the Fenton Community High School District 100 Board of Education since 2015, said there is still a lot more work to do in creating and maintaining a fair and equitable school for every child in Bensenville and Wood Dale.

This monthly event rotates between Fenton, Bensenville School District 2, and Wood Dale School District 7. When at Fenton, Food For Families will operate like other drive by events: cars will drive through our bus lane and pop their trunks as they approach the teams.

Bensenville welcomes holiday season
The village of Bensenville welcomed the holiday season with its annual Holiday Tree and Lights Spectacular held Sunday, Nov. 22 at the Town Center. The Spectacular featured Santa Claus, the lighting of the village Christmas tree as well as special holiday light displays around the Town Center. Adhering to COVID-19 safety guidelines, the village was unable to have its traditional Holiday Magic celebration this year. This year’s celebration consisted of a self-guided tour of Bensenville’s decorated homes and ended with a drive down Center Street to view the holiday light display and receive a free ornament gift.
