According to the Bensenville Police Reports this week, there were two separate incidents of bomb threats reported by complainant on Dec. 13. One incident was reported at about 2:05 p.m. in the 1000 block of W. Green St. The second was reported from the 1000 block of W. Irving Park Road at about 3:55 p.m.

In both cases, each of the complainants reported receiving a bomb threat via email if bitcoin ransom was not paid. Both cases remain under investigation.

A similar incident was reported to Elmhurst Police last week as well.

Historic train engine visits area

The Union Pacific Railroad’s “4141” is painted in the colors of Air Force One and the number 4141 is to commemorate President George H.W. Bush as our forty-first President of the United States. This locomotive was used to pull the former President’s funeral train to the George H.W. Bush Library in Texas, where the President was laid to rest. The Union Pacific Railroad will be donating this locomotive to the Presidential Library after it tours the Union Pacific rail network. The engine was seen at the Proviso Railroad Yard (just east of Elmhurst) where employees and their families were allowed an up close viewing.

Grammy-nominated guitarist, composer and performer Tommy Emmanuel will perform a special concert on Monday, Jan. 28, 2019, at 7:30 p.m. at Elmhurst College to benefit a scholarship fund named for his family. The concert will be held in Hammerschmidt Chapel on the campus of Elmhurst College.

The Emmanuel Family Guitar Endowed Scholarship at Elmhurst College was established earlier this fall in memory of Emmanuel’s sister, Virginia, and his brother Phil.

The scholarship was created through the generosity of Fred and Dinah Gretsch and the Gretsch Company and will benefit Elmhurst guitar students. All proceeds from the concert will be donated to this scholarship.

The first recipients will be selected in the spring of 2019.

“We’re overwhelmed by the generosity of Tommy Emmanuel and the Gretsch family,” said Peter Griffin, chair of the Department of Music at the College. “It’s an honor for us to house this scholarship, which will

support guitar students at Elmhurst College well into the future.”

The Elmhurst College Gretsch Guitar Ensemble will open the concert.

Bond set for man charged with possession of 70 kilos of cocaine DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin announced last week that bond has been set for a Chicago man charged with possessing approximately 70 kilos of cocaine. Jose Mar- Jose Martinez tinez Gomez, 33, of Gomez Chicago, appeared at a bond hearing where Judge Brian Telander set bond at $2.5 million with 10% to apply. Martinez Gomez has been charged with one count of Possession with Intent to Deliver, a Class X felony punishable by up to 15 to 60 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

of Corrections to be served at 75%.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin announced that late last week that Adan Rodriguez, 53, of Carol Stream, was sentenced to 29 years in the IlliAdan nois Department Rodriguez of Corrections for manufacturing child pornography. On Aug. 16, 2018, a jury found

Rodriguez guilty of three counts of Manufacturing Child Pornography, a Class 1 Felony, following a two-day trial. Judge Robert Miller handed down the sentence.

Rodriguez’s sentence stems from charges that in February 2015, Rodriguez directed a victim, who suffers from spina bifida, to send sexually explicit photographs of herself to him, which the victim did. The text exchange was discovered by the victim’s mother who saw the sexually-explicit text messages and

photographs between Rodriguez and his victim on her daughter’s cellular phone. She immediately contacted the Carol Stream Police Department who in turn contacted the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office Children’s Advocacy Center. An investigation conducted by the DuPage County Children’s Advocacy Center resulted in the charges against Rodriguez.

Rodriguez will be required to serve 50% of his sentence before being eligible for parole.

A 31-year-old Villa Park man was charged with two counts of domestic battery in the 600 block of N. Yale at around 11:47 p.m.

Dec. 13 Kyle D. Nilsen, 2, of New Lenox, was issued a local adjunction for possession of cannabis in the 100 block of E. North at around 11:54 p.m.

Two male juveniles from Villa Park were charged with battery at Willowbrook High School at around 2:46 p.m.

Dec. 10 Mario D. Zullo, 48, of Villa Park, was charged with obstructing identification near Jackson and Howard at around 3:45 p.m.

Theft was reported in the 1-100 block of N. Harvard. Police said an unknown suspect stole an outdoor Christmas laser display from the front yard sometime between 8:30 and 11:15 p.m.

Theft was reported in the 300 block of E. North. Police said an unknown suspect stole a cell phone that may have been left unattended on a counter or dropped in the parking lot sometime between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

someone else tried to call they heard a beeping noise called a busy signal and they’d have to hang up and call you later. If you weren’t home, the phone would continue ringing until the person on the other end hung up.

There were no messaging features; no record of missed calls.

When you called someone you had to dial the number manually.

You likely had dozens of phone numbers memorized. There was no auto dial. Your address book consisted of an actual book (can you believe it) where you wrote in the names and numbers by hand.

If you didn’t have a particular number, you’d look in the thick and hefty phone book supplied by the telephone company. Everyone had one. They were valuable and extremely useful commodities. If you needed a plumber or dentist you looked in the phone book. You’d never think of throwing your phone book away or using it as a doorstop.

Calls were limited and defined by distance. If someone lived in

a different state, you had to use a service called long distance. Long distance calls were expensive and were often reserved for holidays and birthdays.

When you left your house – to go to the mall or to school or wherever – your phone stayed tethered to the kitchen wall. If you needed to call someone you used a public pay phone. Calls cost a quarter.

Finally, phones were uni-tasking units. Not even the most expensive phone came with the option of any sort of camera feature and video capabilities were out of the question.

That was then. This is now. While phones are more important (not to mention smarter) than ever, our approach to them has changed.

Today my phone rings in my pocket. My husband is calling. I know this because of the ringtone.

I have different tones programmed for frequent callers, my husband being one of them. He also has his own text tone, as do all the members of my family. Each of us has our own phone and phone number. We couldn’t imagine sharing.

When other friends and family call, their contact information pops up on my screen. If a call comes from an unknown number, I don’t answer it. I don’t want to risk fielding random sales calls.

When I want to call someone, I type the first few letters of their

name into my phone and the number pops up on my screen. I don’t have anyone’s phone number memorized.

Not even my kids’.

Gone are the days of busy signals and pay phones. For the most part long distance is a thing of the past – at least if you keep your calls to the 48 contiguous. The same could (almost) be said of phone books.

They’ve shrunk over the years and are currently almost too slight to qualify as paperweights.

Cords remain the one constant over time. Even smart phones are dependent on them and many a family has been known to experience discord over misplaced, lost, broken or stolen cords.

We may call them phones, but they’ve become much more than that. From cameras to games and music, from maps to payment sources, from weather predictions to location services. And more.

Still, the telephone was created to fulfill our need to communicate and that hasn’t changed. The manner in which we approach this, however, continues to evolve. If you’d like to discuss further, feel free to contact me – via email or text, please. I prefer not to take any calls.

Word of the Year vs New Year’s Resolution The stats show we don’t stick to New Year’s resolutions. We are too vague: “I will lose weight” or “I will get in shape” or “I will lose ten pounds” need an ACTION plan to go along with it. That’s the part we are not so good at.

To lose that ten pounds say you resolve to “exercise more.” That’s still too loosey-goosey. Committing to working out three times a week is better and even that needs to be plotted out: I will go x day at x time.

Schedule it.

When you see the commitment on the calendar, it becomes real. You still may slack off, but seeing the reminder again and again increases your chances that you will exercise more often.

Another way to do resolutions is to pick a word for the upcoming year.

Instead of “I resolve to get out of debt” (which also requires an action plan of paying more than the minimum on the credit cards and cutting back on the splurges), you pick a WORD (or a phrase) to be your

“accountability buddy” for the year.

Choosing a word is easier on our heads and hearts than resolutions. It seems softer perhaps, but can be even more powerful.

For example, let’s say you want less debt. You could resolve to “manage money better” and create an action plan on how to do that. Or you can pick a work to hold you to task.

The “task” is something you desire, something your heart wants. What words feel good around that desire?

You can choose DEBT-FREE if that feels good. You can choose FINANCIAL FREEDOM if that resonates. You can be specific and set a number you want to have in savings at this time next year: $5K.

You can choose another goal word or strong anchor word that will help you manage your spending. Maybe you want to go to Italy. Thinking about going to Italy stirs emotions in you so you choose ITALY as your word. ITALY will be the focus of your money decisions for the next year.

This makes decisions more concrete and more fun.

Write the word and have it in your wallet and other places you will see it.

When you whip out your credit card (or debit or cash) to buy a Cinnamon Dolce Creme Frappuccino, you will now pause. You see your word ITALY. You thus ask yourself: Do I want to spend the money on this drink right now or instead put that money in my savings account and be able to enjoy an amazing drink at an Italian café?

The choice is always up to you.

There is no right or wrong. No mandates, no guilt. Use the word to pull you toward what you desire, something that excites you.

Maybe you have a pair of jeans you love but are too snug right now. Have

your word/phrase be MY FAVORITE JEANS. When faced with a choice on a menu or at the fridge or leaving work and debating about going to work out, you see the words MY FAVORITE JEANS. You can choose to do something that brings you closer to that desire.

Having a word helps us be more mindful of our choices. The word is a reminder, a guidepost, an encouragement.

Everything in life is a choice. We go on auto-pilot too often and forget we can make a new choice. Having a WORD for the year is a gentle way to course correct, day after day after day.

Try it this year and see what happens for you. If you pay attention to your word daily, I guarantee you your life will change.

It is important to evaluate jawbone growth, primary tooth loss, and permanent tooth eruption in order to assess whether both jawbones are correctly aligned, permanent teeth are assuming their proper positions, and upper and lower teeth converge properly. If not, the orthodontist can begin phase I treatment that will make phase II less complex.

Often, your child’s dentist will be the first to notice problems during a regular visit and recommend that you see an orthodontist.

When I was a kid, the telephone was important stuff. Like most families, we had one phone number.

Can you imagine an entire family sharing one phone number? Yet we lived through it.

When the phone rang, it was a mystery. No one had caller ID. You had to answer every call. It was usually a race because we all wanted to be the one to get to the phone first. Phone calls were exciting!

When you got a call, you were stuck – in the room with the telephone. In those days all phones were reliant on a power source known as a cord. These old fashioned cords shouldn’t be confused with charging cords. No. You had to stay plugged into the wall for the phone to function. If your phone was in the kitchen, you were forced to talk to your boyfriend right there – in front of your mom who was stirring up the Hamburger Helper with her big ears all listening.

That wasn’t the only lack of privacy. All the phones in your house were connected. If you were talking in the kitchen, your little sister could pick up the extension in the living room and quietly eavesdrop until you heard her breathing and screamed for her to get off. Things like that used to happen all the time. Really.

While the Addison Trail boys basketball team had a recent threegame losing streak, all was not bleak, as coach Brendan Lyons noted.

The Blazers dropped a 53-49 West Suburban Conference Gold Division game to Downers Grove South, lost 71-45 on the road at York in a WSC crossover contest and lost 44-42 in a WSC Gold battle against Leyden.

“We’ve lost a couple of close

ones,” said Lyons. “We’re not playing bad, but we’re not doing enough to win some of these tight games we’re in now. Our guys compete and get after it and do enough to keep us right there in games and even give us leads late in the games.

But we’ve had a few breakdowns.

It’s a combination of missed opportunities, missed free throws, giving up an offensive rebound at a key time or committing a turnover in a key situation.”

Lyons added Addison Trail, while older on paper age-wise, still is a relatively youthful team. “We are a senior-dominated team, but with only two guys coming back with varsity experience, you hope you

learn from these situations and you improve,” he said.

“With some of the games we have on the horizon for the foreseeable future, we’re anticipating more games just like the ones we’ve played recently.”

Addison Trail is getting strong scoring production from a number of sources. Adem Mehmeti is leading the team in scoring at 13 points per game, while JT Daniels is at 10 points a contest and A.J. Carlson and Sheldon Allgood are right there at 9 points per game apiece.

“You put that all together and that gets you into the low 40s,” said Lyons. “For the year we’re averaging around 54 or 55 points a game.

Those four guys have done the bulk of our scoring and all of them are doing good things on both sides of the floor. I’m very happy with them.”

Addison Trail played a non-conference game late last week against Maine East before opening play in the Glenbard West Christmas tournament. That tournament continues today and Friday in Glen Ellyn.

“Between now and (this week) we will have five more games under our belt,” said Lyons. “I’m excited to see if we can correct some of the things that are holding us back from getting those wins late in games.”

The Blazers were 6-4 through their first 10 games of the year.

“

Willowbrook girls bowling team off to undefeated conference start Warriors rolled past District 88 neighbor Addison Trail in recent action

The Willowbrook girls bowling team is right in the thick of things in the early going of the West Suburban Conference season.

The Warriors were off to a 3-0 start in WSC play and had a 5-1 overall mark in dual meets through late last week.

Willowbrook recently defeated District 88 neighbor Addison Trail 3,197-2,812. Katie Pettinger led all scorers with a 613 series, which included games of 236, 193 and 184.

Paula Williams added a 589 series with two games of 204 and a 181 game to go with those.

“Paula also shot very impressively,” said Willowbrook coach Kevin Allen. “Katie and Paula led the way against Addison Trail. Katie has been extremely consistent and always seems to be throwing it well. Paula has been throwing it very well and is bowling some very nice series.”

Allen noted that Pettinger has broken the 600-series barrier in three matches already this season. Pettinger and Holly Helsper lead the team in scoring average. “Katie and Holly both have been bowling very well this season,” said Allen.

and shot-making has greatly improved,” he said. “We are able to fill frames and grind out games when things are getting tough. That has been something we are working hard on—being able to fill frames and finish games.”

Allen has been beyond pleased with the varied contributions he’s received throughout the roster so far this year. “With our team it always has been next girl up,” he said. “Who is next to have the big day? I believe we have a group of girls that at any moment could be the high series or high game of the match. We have the ability to overcome bad shots and bring back games that might have started slow. We make adjustments when we need and are able to move on to the next shot. We keep a positive attitude throughout the entire match no matter what is happening.”

Through late last week the Fenton wrestling team sported a 5-3 mark in dual meets.

“We are continually working hard and improving,” said Fenton coach Brian Hastings.

Fenton holds wins over Elk Grove, Chicago Mather, Walther Christian, Wheaton Academy and Bishop McNamara. The Bison have lost to Niles West, Nazareth and Glenbrook South. “The matches against Nazareth and Glenbrook South were extremely close losses,” Hastings noted.

Fenton also competed in the Waunakee invitational in Wisconsin where Danny Ramirez placed third, John Quinto took fourth, Jeremy Piskorz took fifth with a 4-1 record and David Burch placed sixth.

On the season, Ramirez was 12-3 at 152 pounds through late last week. Piskorz was 12-4 at 138 pounds, while Burch was 10-5 at 145 pounds, and Quinto was 9-4 at 106 pounds.

Hastings explained Fenton has a relatively young team with seven sophomores and four juniors starting for him.

“Considering this, we are competing well and striving to get better,” he said.

Key newcomers to the team are freshman Olivia Baran and freshman Emily Czyzycki.

“The strength of our team is that each gymnast helps out the other with skill drills and routines,” said Fenton coach Paula Parat.

“As always we have a team with many girls who are beginners and are learning the sport of gymnastics. They are getting better at independently working on routines and drills that have been set up for them.”

Parat, who noted the team is strongest right now on floor exercise and balance beam, said a big key will be staying healthy this season.

“Many of our gymnasts have never trained as an athlete/done sports or gymnastics,” she said. “I love coaching kids who have never participated in the sport before and watch the glow on their faces when they have accomplished a skill, no matter how small.”

County receives Illinois Sustainability Award DuPage County was one of 27 organizations or companies in Illinois that received the award for its significant achievements in protecting the environment, helping sustain the future, and improving the economy.

The winners were announced last week during a ceremony at the Union League Club in Chicago.

The Illinois Sustainable Technology Center administers the awards, which are presented to organizations in Illinois that have demonstrated a commitment to environmental excellence through outstanding and innovative sustainability practices.

DuPage County received the award based on the Vactor Receiving Station, the electric car charging station located on campus, the County’s Sustainability Best Practices Guide, traffic signal upgrades, installation of energy-efficient lighting on campus, and other efforts to reduce waste and increase energy. Thanks to these energy efficiencies, the County saves more than $868,000 annually.

“DuPage County remains committed to being environmentally friendly and finding ways to reduce energy consumption,” said County Board Chairman Dan Cronin. “This recognition demonstrates being energy efficient also benefits taxpayers.”

Any Illinois public or private organization is eligible to apply for the award. Winners are selected through a rigorous process of review and examination by ISTC technical assistance experts.

County’s CRS rating results in discounted insurance rates DuPage County recently earned a rating in the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Community Rating System (CRS) program that can save unincorporated residents up to 20 percent on their flood insurance costs.

The CRS program credits government agencies for efforts that go above and beyond standard flood protection for property owners. Following an evaluation, a community receives a rating on a scale from 1 to 10, and a corresponding reduction in FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program premium is offered to the community’s residents.

DuPage County received a CRS rating of 6, meaning unincorporated residents in floodplains are eligible to receive up to a 20 percent discount on their flood insurance premiums.

DuPage County officially became enrolled in the program Oct. 1.

IHSA abolishes football conferences New districting format approved; to be rolled out for 2021 season

Among the Illinois High School Association’s recent member-school approval of 11 amendment proposals in the annual bylaw referendum that ended Dec. 17, is one amendment approval that will signal a monumental change for high-school football starting in 2021.

Starting in that year, the IHSA is implementing a district scheduling system that will not only abolish the use of conferences in the sport but also will change the playoff-qualification process to where the top 4 teams in each district qualify for the playoffs.

“It is a historic change,” said IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson in a news release. “The narrow gap in the voting indicates that there are pros and cons that impact our diverse football-playing membership in a multitude of ways. We hope that it will effectively address conference realignment and scheduling concerns, while helping create long-term sustainability and growth for high school football in the state.”

Beginning in 2021, the IHSA will assign football teams to eight or nine team groupings (i.e. “districts”) based on classification and geography.

Previously, schools did not officially know their postseason classification until the completion of the regular season, the IHSA explained.

The IHSA will assign each school’s regular-season games against their district opponents. Districts will be set for two years, allowing home and away scheduling within the district. Schools will have the autonomy to schedule their non-district opponents for any open weeks, but those non-district games will not count toward playoff qualification.

The district assigning process will be similar to how schools are assigned to regionals and sectionals in other

IHSA sports and activities, the IHSA pointed out.

“We understand that everyone wants to know what district and class they will be in, but the reality is that we are two years away from being able to tabulate that information,” said Anderson. “Because IHSA districts will operate on a two-year cycle, schools will need the next two years to evaluate their participation.

Some may choose to join coops or disband coops. Some may choose to play eight-man football. Chicago Public Schools will need to determine what schools it will make playoff eligible, and we will also have non-boundaried schools that will change classes in that timeframe as they gain or lose multiplier waivers.”

The IHSA Football Advisory Committee and Board of Directors will work in conjunction with the IHSA staff to begin formulating recommendations on the classification cutoffs for football, the association noted.

“Obviously, the ideal situation would be 64 schools in each class, giving each of the eight classes eight districts with eight teams apiece,” said Anderson. “The IHSA Football Advisory Committee, Board of Directors and staff will work together to create policy that addresses situations with more or less than 512 teams.”

Head football coaches in the Independent readership areas of Villa Park, Addison and Bensenville are, for the most part, taking a wait-andsee approach.

“I really don’t have any comment at this time. I’d like an opportunity to learn more on how this will work,” said Addison Trail football coach Paul Parpet Jr. “I currently do not have any thoughts until the district alignment is completed. Everything else is just speculation,” said Fenton coach Matt Lynch.

Willowbrook coach Nick Hildreth, whose team has gone deep into the postseason the last two years, spoke about the abandonment of the conference format in football. Hildreth

is a graduate of the Villa Park high school that is part of a West Suburban Conference operation that has been a model of member consistency for many years.

“I am opposed to the change,” said Hildreth. “As a 2000 graduate of Willowbrook I grew up in the West Suburban Conference. I take great pride in the West Suburban Conference and it is the only conference I have ever known. It would be a shame to see some of our great rivalries go away.”

A total of 560 IHSA member schools participated in football during the 2018 season. 523 were eligible to qualify for the 2018 IHSA Football Playoffs. The district proposal will not change the IHSA football playoffs materially, as there will continue to be eight postseason classes with 32 qualifiers per class.

Under the current playoff system in effect through the 2020 football season, conference champions in eligible conferences and any eligible team that wins six, seven, eight or nine regular-season games automatically qualifies for the playoff field. A tie-breaker system determines which five-win teams make the field.

Beginning in 2021, the top four teams in each of the eight districts will determine the playoff qualifiers for that class.

“This is the third time (2009, 2014) that a football district proposal has been brought forward to our membership and each time the support has grown,” said Anderson. “It is based on a concept that other state high school associations have used successfully, and we are committed to doing our part to make it successful here in Illinois. The beauty of our legislative system is that our member schools will have input in that process and the ability to offer recommendations on tweaks and changes as we progress.”

A more definitive timeline on the future release dates of districts and schedules will be developed in conjunction with the IHSA Football Advisory Committee over the course of the 2019-20 school year.

Of jingle horses, Hallmark Channel movies and reindeer antlers on cars Random thoughts, observations, musings, peeves and what have you as the holiday season winds down … and The Holiday Lite (93.9 FM) has signed off for another 10 1/2 months (thank goodness!) …

• I tried not to be such a Christmas curmudgeon this season and actually listened to The Holiday Lite periodically the past few weeks (but only at 30-second intervals).

Heck, I even forced myself to listen to callers share their holiday stories with Delilah. (I’m expecting my Man Card to be revoked any day now.) But most every time I turned on The Holiday Lite, the station played the same tunes.

Either “Winter Wonderland (who is Parson Brown?)” “Jingle Bell Rock (what is a jingle horse?) or endless covers of “Sleigh Ride” and “The Christmas Song.”

• The following is a public service announcement for our women readers: The Hallmark Channel is continuing its lineup of holiday-themed romance movies through Jan. 5. (Yup, I looked it up.

• I know the holiday season is all about giving, yet I prefer to have the Do-It-Yourself Messiah done for me.

• According to a story I read in the New York Post, this year’s hot holiday toy was the Poopsie Slime Surprise Unicorn—described as a “doe-eyed doll with loose bowels”—for $49.99. Let’s cut to the chase here: this doll poops glitter. Mom and Dad, please tell me you didn’t stand in line at Target on Black Friday to make this purchase, or force a UPS delivery driver to leave Poopsie Slime on your front doorstep. Here’s hoping your child likes the doll because I couldn’t imagine standing in line to

return it.

• ’Tis the season to be jolly … except when someone who has their nose buried in their smartphone doesn’t bother to look up and nearly walks right into you at the Yorktown Mall.

• Now that Christmas is over—and your car, 4x4 truck or SUV didn’t fly—it’s time for our Rudolph wannabes to take those silly-looking deer antlers off the sides of your vehicle’s front doors, as well as that red nose fastened to the front grill.

• And don’t think I haven’t noticed those of you who display candy canes on the side of each front door and a candy cane on the front grill of your vehicles (or a wreath). Those have got to go, too.

• At least once or twice a week during the holidays, I got calls from people named Scam Likely or Nuisance Likely. I suppose I should add them to my contact list.

• Kudos to those of you who put in the effort to decorate your homes or apartments to the hilt during the holiday season—they look great!

I’m lucky I have enough patience and wherewithal to assemble and decorate a 3-foot artificial tree.

• By the way, let’s not leave our holiday decorations up through the

beginning of spring training, OK? • One new year’s resolution I guarantee I won’t be making in 2019 is to get into shape. It’s taken me a lot of years to get two-pack abs (i.e., one pack rolls over the other whenever I sit down).

• Hyundai Holidays commercials just don’t compare to those Happy Honda Days TV spots a few years ago when crooner Michael Bolton jumped out of the back seat, scared the bejesus out of those sitting in the front seats and started singing.

• Speaking of holiday commercials hawking vehicles, the one that leaves me scratching my head anytime I watch it is the fellow who buys a GMC Denali not only for himself, but for his significant other. (The significant other then insists on driving the black Denali, which was meant for him—“I love it!” she gushes more than once—leaving him holding the keys to the red Denali.) Given that a Denali costs around $40,000, you mean to tell me he’s dropping upwards of $80K on his and hers Denali’s? Oh, puh-leese!

My curmudgeon-ness notwithstanding, I hope that you and yours had a blessed Christmas … and wishing you and yours a happy and healthy 2019.
