After years of testing, deliberating and negotiating, the Interim Nighttime Fly Quiet Runway Rotation Plan at O’Hare International Airport was slated to begin Sunday, Nov. 3.

The goals of this plan are to provide nearterm relief, increase predictability, and reduce impacts to the highest impacted communities. The IFQ will be in place through May 16, 2020, when work is scheduled to begin on Runway 4R-22L pavement rehabilitation.

During that construction, operations will revert to the original Fly Quiet program. IFQ will resume in September 2021 and will be in place through February of 2021, when construction of the Runway 9R extension will necessitate a return to original Fly Quiet.

The IFQ features an eight-week runway rotation plan. For each week, a primary and secondary runway use configuration is provided to accommodate potential changes in wind direction. The runway use configurations have been determined and approved by the ONCC to balance noise exposure to the extent possible.

The Village of Bensenville is continuing its efforts towards noise mitigation as an active member of the O’Hare Noise Compatibility Commission (ONCC) and Suburban O’Hare Commission (SOC). Bensenville serves as a member on the ONCC Fly Quiet Committee, Residential Committee, is chairman of the Technical Committee, and is co-chair of the Governance Committee. The ONCC Fly Quiet Committee is currently discussing a long-term rotation plan to be implemented following the completion of the O’Hare Modernization Plan (OMP) slated for completion in 2022.

County’s PLT receives funding to continue work on youth substance use The DuPage County Prevention Leadership Team (PLT) has been awarded a Drug Free Communities (DFC) Grant, which will provide the coalition with five more years of funding to continue working to prevent youth substance use.

The DFC Program provides grants to community coalitions to strengthen the infrastructure among local partners to create and sustain a reduction in local youth substance use. Recognizing that local problems need local solutions, DFC-funded coalitions engage multiple sectors of the community and employ a variety of environmental strategies to address local substance use problems.

“The renewal of the Drug Free Communities grant indicates both the impact of the PLT over the past five years as well as proving the need to continue working to prevent youth substance use in DuPage,” said Karen Ayala, Executive Director, DuPage County Health Department.

Since the PLT received its first DFC Grant in 2014, significant strides have been made in youth substance use prevention. The rate of DuPage County 12th graders reporting past30-day alcohol use decreased six-percent from 2014 to 2018. During the same time period, according to data collected through the Illinois Youth Survey, the number of 12th graders reporting past-30-day use rates of prescription drugs not prescribed to them decreased two-percent.

The PLT has also advocated for many prevention policies, such as Tobacco 21 and civil-style social host ordinances to reduce underage drinking parties. Recently, the coalition has focused on the prevention of youth vaping and marijuana use and has worked with many local policymakers regarding recreational marijuana prevention policies.

County Health Department offers Open Enrollment workshops to enroll in a health insurance plan. Anyone who registered for insurance through the Health Insurance Marketplace in the past, must review and renew their current health insurance plan during Open Enrollment.

By law, each health insurance plan must cover (at a minimum) essential health benefits, including hospitalizations, doctor visits and prescription medicine. Financial assistance is still available to help lower costs of insurance for individuals meeting the income eligibility criteria.

On Thursday, Oct. 24, the White Pines Golf Club Banquet Hall was filled with more than 100 volunteers for the Village of Bensenville’s annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner.

This annual event gave thanks and recognition to those who dedicate countless hours giving back to the community throughout the year.

Village President Frank DeSimone began the night by thanking all volunteers in the community for their time, commitment, and dedication to the Village.

“Whether you are a board member or participate in a community group, it would be extremely difficult to have Village events such as Music in

the Park, Libertyfest, and other special events without your volunteerism,” he said. “I personally want to acknowledge and thank each of you for your support.”

DeSimone also recognized each organization in attendance, which was followed by a round of applause for their efforts. Special recognition was made to the Emergency Management volunteers and Bensenville Police Department leadership for their long hours of dedication.

This year’s Breiter-Cuvala Volunteer of the Year award winner was Fenton High School senior Victor

Aristakessian. Victor has displayed exemplary volunteerism by accumulating more than 175 hours of community service. He is also the first student to receive this award. Victor has dedicated his time and talents to his church, school, community events, and the local food pantry.

Willis sponsors proposal to cap insulin prices Fighting to make health care more affordable and accessible, state Rep. Kathy Wills, D-Northlake, is backing new legislation aiming to lower the high costs of insulin, a necessary medication that helps diabetes patients fight back against the condition.

“Insulin is a life and death choice for those who need it, and making sure that it does not cause financial ruin when patients buy it is critical,” Willis said. “This is very personal to me and my family, as my daughter has diabetes and I do not want to imagine a world where she, or anyone else, cannot get the medicine they need.”

Willis is sponsoring Senate Bill 667, a new proposal seeking to caps patients’ insulin payments at $100 a month. This bill is addressing the massive spike in insulin prices, which between 2002 and 2013, outof-pocket costs for insulin increased almost 300%. There are 1.3 million

adult diabetics in Illinois, many of whom regularly rely on insulin to maintain their health and quality of life.

Capping inulin costs for the millions of adult diabetics in Illinois follows Willis’s pledge to build a stronger Illinois, which includes more affordable health care for families.

This year, Willis supported major legislation that requires Illinois insurance companies to cover the cost of EpiPens for people under the age of 18, helping remove another huge financial burden for families with children who suffer from food allergies.

“I am fighting for my daughter and every Illinoisan who lives with diabetes to make their health care more affordable,” Willis said. “Preventing massive price increases on insulin is not only the right thing to do, but the moral one. People’s health should always take priority over insurance company profits.”

Duckworth, Durbin announce more than $11 million in funding for firefighter resources

U.S. Sens. Tammy Duckworth and Dick Durbin recently announced that more than $11.1 million in federal funding would be granted to communities in the Chicagoland area through the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG)

Program.

The AFG program provides first-responder organizations access to much-needed emergency response equipment, personal protective equipment, firefighting and emergency vehicles and training in an effort to create safer, more prepared communities.

“Firefighters risk their lives and run toward danger when others run away,” Duckworth said. “We owe it to them to make sure they have the best equipment and training, and I’m proud to join Senator Durbin in announcing this funding to help ensure our firefighters have the resources they need to keep their communities

in the Chicagoland area safe.”

Roesch nominated for 2020 TIME Dealer of the Year Award Dan Roesch, president of Larry Roesch Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram in Elmhurst, is among a select group of 49 automobile dealers across the country nominated for the Dan Roesch 2020 TIME Dealer of the Year Award, which will be announced at the 103rd Annual National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) Show in Las Vegas on Feb. 15, 2020.

Now in its 51st year, the TIME Dealer of the Year Award, , is one of the automobile industry’s most prestigious and highly-coveted honors, recognizing both the community service and industry accomplishments of the recipients.

Roesch, 58, was chosen to represent the Illinois Automobile Dealers Association (IADA) in the national competition by IADA President Pete Sander.

“I was 13 when I knew what I wanted to do for the rest of my life: be a car dealer,” Roesch said of his early days visiting the dealership of his father, Larry. “And I believe the best thing that the industry has brought to me is the flexibility to do the things that make a difference in so many lives.”

More about Dan Roesch After graduating from Northwood University in Midland, Mich., in 1981 with a degree in automotive marketing, Roesch set out to achieve his dream at his father’s company, which grew from a single DeSoto store founded by his grandfather in 1923.

“I started out as a porter at age 14 doing all the dirty grunt work no one else would do,” he said. “It did not matter to me, as I was at the dealership around all the shiny cars. I later

worked in the body shop, parts room, used vehicle reconditioning and went on to selling vehicles during the summer of my freshman year at college.”

Roesch worked side by side with his father and eventually became a car dealer. Today, he oversees Roesch Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram and Roesch Ford in Bensenville.

“My father and I were very close,” Roesch said. “He was always enthusiastic about charity events and helping others, and when he passed away in August of 2013, people waited an hour and a half to pay their respects.

One man relayed a story of how my father gave him a car when he was homeless so he could get a job, and that he has been giving back ever since.

“My father believed that we are given the opportunity to make a difference in someone’s life, so we do.

It can be as small as a phone call or a monetary contribution in a person’s time of need. I am blessed to be in an industry that allows me to act upon the instinct that was ingrained in my upbringing.”

About Dylan’s Dream Team And Roesch has made a difference, particularly through his commitment to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

“At age 3, my son Dylan was diagnosed with the genetic disease, cystic fibrosis,” he explained. “I was devastated and didn’t know what to do. I thought to myself, I am not a doctor but a really good car salesman, and I know many wealthy people and vendors. If I can get them all involved and raise a boatload of money, maybe the scientists can find a cure.”

He jumped into action and started Dylan’s Dream Team with the focus of providing funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in Chicago.

Going home

Nearly a decade ago, my 80-yearold dad sensed quiet and a lack of activity upstairs and felt a worried edginess creep under his skin. He headed up the basement stairs and was about halfway toward the top when the doorbell rang.

Standing outside were his neighbor and my mom. The neighbor found her wandering next door, on his driveway, appearing lost. She had her purse, but wore only slippers on her feet. Although it was December in Minnesota, she had no coat. When the neighbor asked what she was doing, she told him she was just going home.

When the neighbor pointed toward my mom’s own front door, she showed no recollection of familiarity. She looked at the building and saw a strange house, not home.

Home. It’s a concept we all understand. Everyone wants a home to go to. A place to call one’s own. A place to feel safe. Home is a comfortable haven.

Even in advanced stages of Alzheimer’s disease, my mom understood the concept of home. And, she knew with certainty she wanted to go there. Trouble was, she was technically home; she just didn’t recognize it. To this day, that knowledge breaks my heart.

Alzheimer’s is a disease known for robbing one’s memories, but it takes so much more. Memories constitute our concept of family, friends, life, home – the things that make us who we are.

My mom understood to the very core of her being that she needed to go home, but she didn’t know how to get there. The nice elderly gentleman she found living with her (my dad and her husband of 49 years) couldn’t seem to help her.

So, when he wasn’t looking, she grabbed her purse and exited out the front door, looking for a location that didn’t exist– yet did exist all at the same time – which is about as illogical and confounding as Alzheimer’s.

The situation became unsafe, and we found a new place for her to live.

It was beautiful. It was safe, and the people there were equipped to provide the care she needed. We called it her new home, but she didn’t buy our rhetoric. God bless her for

that. The Alzheimer’s stole nearly everything, but it couldn’t steal her spunk. She knew when she was being conned.

By this time, she believed she was a young girl – her home was back on the farm where she grew up. She shared memories and stories related to her days there until they were reduced to one incident when she was nearly run over by a tractor.

She told us about it over and over; each time like it was the first telling. I imagine it ran over and over in her mind, like the cheese that stands alone: the one memory that remained.

We, her family, were foreign to her. When we visited, she knew we belonged to her, somehow. She knew we were familiar, but as a young girl longing to return home to the farm, she simply had no place for a husband, daughters and grandchildren.

Still, she asked, every visit, for us to take her home. “I just want to go home,” she’d say. And my heart would break a little each time because I understood Alzheimer’s had stolen any home on earth from her.

While here she’d never get there.

And as the disease took over, we had to let her go, as painful as that was. We had to say goodbye – for now.

It’s been more than nine years she’s been gone. And I can finally write about it.

Because as much as I miss her, I believe she did go home. She is home. She found the refuge she so stubbornly sought. And, finally, in that realization, I have found a sliver of peace.

Lizzadro Museum celebrates grand reopening in Oak Brook New location features more space for exhibits, activities, special events The Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art, a longstanding fixture in Chicagoland’s cultural landscape, is reopening to the public on Tuesday, Nov. 12 in a new and improved space at 1220 Kensington Road in Oak Brook. Pressure on property taxes mounts for towns across Illinois amid pension burden Editor’s note: This story, provided by the non-partisan Better Government Association—a non-profit news organization based in Chicago—focuses on how pension burdens are putting pressure on property taxes and the ability to provide services in Illinois municipalities.

In the heart of Illinois, the city of Peoria cut its workforce by almost one-fifth to pay its annual obligations for police and firefighter pensions. In northern Illinois, Waukegan is selling bonds to keep the city operating.

In the east, Danville closed one of its four fire stations following mounting pension bills. And in the state capital, Springfield—for the first time—is pouring every dollar it collects in property taxes into public safety pensions.

All across Illinois, in many of the small towns and larger cities that manage some 650 independent police and fire retirement systems, those funds have placed an increasingly tightening vise on municipal finances.

Much of the focus on the pension problem in Illinois has been on the massive liabilities facing the five statewide funds as well as Chicago’s citywide pensions. But in many ways, the more pressing pension

issues can be found in the towns in every corner of the state.

In Illinois’ 28 largest cities beyond Chicago—those with populations of 50,000 or more—the rate of pension payment increases has outstripped the growth of property tax revenue by a factor of about 10 since 2012, a Better Government Association review of financial and pension documents shows.

Five cities saw a net decline in property tax revenue between 2012 and 2018, while eight reported a cumulative gain of less than 10 percent.

During the same time period, the median increase of pension payments to the police retirement systems jumped roughly 53 percent; for firefighters it was about 58 percent.

Illinois has imposed a structure for police and firefighter pensions that is inherently inefficient but also distinct from the problems facing the statewide funds. Some cities, many downstate, are hampered by declining tax bases as people and jobs leave. A town’s hands are tied with how it invests pension cash as well as the small size of its pension pools.

“No one would set up a system like this if they had it to do it again,” said Brad Cole, executive director of the Illinois Municipal League.

On average, the pensions are funded at 55 percent, which is 21 percentage points below the 2000 average.

There is no single city that perfectly

exemplifies Illinois’ pension predicament. There is, however, a common bottom line: mounting pressure on property taxes.

‘Completely unsustainable’ National surveys have shown Illinois near the top in terms of property taxes, mostly the result of the state being near the bottom in supporting public education. Pension demands are putting even more pressure on property taxes, forcing city leaders to make tough choices about cutting back on services or adding to the tax bills.

“There’s not enough natural growth in our revenue sources to keep up with pension costs, and, at some point, citizens say enough is enough and you can’t raise taxes,” said Bill McCarty, who as Springfield’s budget director for more than eight years has seen up close the slow strangulation of the city’s finances.

Last year every dollar of property tax revenue collected in Springfield went into the pension funds. Next year the bill will go up another $1.4 million, he said. Over 20 years, the cumulative effect of pension obligations is projected to exceed property tax collections by nearly $270 million.

“That’s completely unsustainable,” McCarty said.

Amid the increased pressure on municipalities, Gov. J.B. Pritzker

earlier this month proposed a partial solution: consolidate the investment operations of the funds, with the intent of saving money and improving the financial returns on investments.

The current system, the governor said, reveals the individual funds, on the whole, are “underperforming by nearly $1 million per day. That’s not just a missed opportunity — that’s a hole these funds are digging deeper every year.”

State lawmakers are expected to consider the measure during the fall veto session, which started Oct. 28.

While many mayors and budget officials applaud the governor’s bill, there is a general belief that this step is not the cavalry coming to the rescue. The numbers—unfunded liabilities, annual cost increases, state-mandated funding targets, longer life expectancy—are too daunting to be tamed by consolidation alone.

“You need to have structural reform to what the pensions look like going forward if there’s any chance for the municipalities to survive and not end up like the state of Illinois, where you’re dropping into 20 or 30 percent for the funding level,” said Reid Ottesen, the longtime village manager in suburban Palatine.

Amanda Kass of the University of Illinois at Chicago, who for years has been monitoring the performance of police and firefighter pensions, notes

that while the state has its own serious problems with more than $130 billion in unfunded liabilities and an average funding level of about 40 percent, one of the lowest among the states, local governments have fewer tools to maintain the public safety pensions. The urgency, for them, is greater.

‘A hornet’s nest with a snake inside’ “It’s a hornet’s nest with a snake inside,” said Kass, associate director of the Government Finance Research Center at UIC’s College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs.

“If total revenue isn’t keeping pace with the year-to-year increase,” Kass said about the strain on municipalities, “we know that more revenue is having to be devoted to making pension payments. Which means service cuts, or not addressing service or infrastructure needs.”

What’s more, the obstacles are rooted in the demographic and economic disparities that define Illinois, a state where nine out of 10 counties are losing population and job growth is increasingly gravitating to metropolitan Chicago.

In Rockford, the city’s cost to maintain the police pension fund jumped 82 percent between 2012 and 2018, according to Rockford’s finan-

cial reports. The firefighter payments doubled.

In 2012, the city was spending $9.6 million on public safety pensions. In 2020, the budgeted amount is $20 million, Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara said. In 2025, he said, it will rise to $26 million. And by 2030, it will consume all of the city’s property taxes, which is the primary revenue source of the general fund.

The city implemented a utility tax to help relieve the pressure, but it’s not

enough.

Throughout the past seven years, McNamara said, the property tax levy has remained flat and now the city is approaching a breaking point.

“Something has to be done in the short term and long term to allow municipalities that are the size of Rockford to have some breathing room or some relief from these pension obligations,” McNamara said.

“They’re growing at an exponential rate that we just simply can’t keep

up with. We can only cut so much staff before we have to cut core city services, which we don’t want to do.

We’ve got a lot of work ahead of us.”

Farther south in Peoria, which in 2017 saw the headquarters of Caterpillar Inc. leave for the Chicago suburb of Deerfield, the pension squeeze was already tight before the company left town.

In the past five years, Mayor Jim Ardis said, the city workforce has been cut by about 18 percent, to 650.

The majority of the cuts came from the ranks of police and fire, he said.

The city outsourced engineering services and eliminated animal control.

Early retirement offers are common, and many vacancies go unfilled, Ardis said.

In a controversial move, Peoria enacted a public safety pension fee—about $25 per property owner—which Ardis said should generate about $1.7 million annually.

“There’s no such thing as a fee.

People know it’s a tax,” Ardis said.

“It doesn’t matter what you call it.

People know it when they see it.”

“It’s been a constant tightening of the belt across the board in Peoria for the past decade, really,” Ardis said.

“More people are retired than working. It’s a bad situation. It’s a perfect storm.”

Paying city operating costs through bonds Waukegan, the old port city, used to boast industrial prosperity. Today its industrial legacy includes multiple Environmental Protection Agency Superfund sites. It has near-

ly $170 million in unfunded public safety pension liabilities and the city’s 90,000 residents feel the effects of budget austerity as pension costs soar.

For a decade, none of the money collected through the property tax levy has been spent on day-to-day services, said Tina Smigielski, the city’s finance director. Services such as residential garbage collection have been contracted out. Layoffs and early retirement have brought the employee count down from a decade ago. Money from a proposed casino won’t help until the doors are opened.

So, the city has paid its operating costs through bonds, said Mayor Sam Cunningham, who is aware of the long-term risks. “We can debt ourselves right out of business if we borrow rather than pay for services on an annual basis.”

“We want to take care of those who provide services to our communities. I would feel like a jerk if I wasn’t able to provide for their retirement after they put in their blood, sweat, tears and love into the city,” Cunningham said. “But we also have to balance what we have to do today.”

Even towns seeing a growth in population are feeling the pension reality bearing down.

Naperville, for instance, puts more money into the two funds than is required and has been able to maintain the police system at 77 percent funded and the firefighters at 75 percent. That’s not great but it’s near the top among all funds, nearly all

of which are financially weaker than they were 15 years ago. Naperville’s population and economic prospects have soared since 1990, with the residential count increasing by nearly 75 percent to 148,000.

Northwest suburban Elgin has seen growth but it hasn’t kept pace with pension demands.

Despite a recent bump in population, Elgin Mayor Dave Kaptain said property tax revenue and riverboat casino earnings aren’t the reliable cash registers they used to be. As a result, the city borrowed $25 million a few years ago because it was behind on street repairs and pension costs were partly to blame, Kaptain said.

Across the state since 2004, there has been a nearly 54 percent increase in the number of retirees collecting pensions while the number of public safety employees paying into those systems has flatlined.

Some smaller communities face even greater financial peril, Kass said, because they don’t have the tax base to meet pension funding obligations and, because their pension systems are smaller, they are restricted in the kinds of investments they can make.

Danville, population 31,000, closed one of its four fire stations in 2017 amid mounting pension pressures. It enacted a special tax assessment devoted specifically to public safety retirement systems. The firefighters’ pension in Danville is 16 percent funded while the police is at 28 percent, according to state records.

Addison Mayor proclaims October ‘Arts DuPage Month’ Kip Pasta presents keynote address at special event

At a recent Village meeting, Mayor Richard Veenstra proclaimed October “Arts DuPage Month” in Addison.

“The Abstract Sculpture of Kip Pasta” was the Arts DuPage Month event at the Addison Center for the Arts. This was the second year that Arts DuPage and its partner art organizations like Addison Center for the Arts showcased the rich artistic community in Addison and throughout the County.

On Oct. 19, Pasta gave a keynote address at the Addison Center for the Arts for Arts DuPage Month.

He explained how he got his start in making miniature facades of old buildings and then transitioned to his signature towering wood constructions he creates today. Pasta took several questions from the audience and gave everyone a glimpse into what makes an artist tick.

“The Abstract Sculpture of Kip Pasta” was on display at the ACA from Sept. 25 through Nov. 2.

Senate president pushes flavored nicotine products ban CAPITOL NEWS ILLINOIS

Legislation banning retailers from selling flavored nicotine products in Illinois will likely come before lawmakers in mid-November, its sponsor said Oct. 29 after a preliminary hearing.

Senate President John Cullerton’s “Flavored Tobacco Ban Act” bill is one of six pending in the General Assembly that would ban flavored products including cigarettes and electronic vaping pods. The Chicago Democrat’s bill, however, has the highest-profile backing.

His measure would place a wholesale moratorium on the sale of any product made from or containing tobacco with a flavor added, and is targeted at restricting minors’ access to such goods, according to a news release.

One of the stakeholders who testified before state senators about Cullerton’s bill was Ruby Johnson, an activist with Parents Against Vaping E-Cigarettes.

The oldest of her seven children was hospitalized with a lung-related illness resulting from vaping.

She said she favors curbing access

to flavored tobacco products because “our kids’ health and safety isn’t a fight we can afford to walk away from.”

“These products were allowed to flood the market without anyone knowing how they would cause damage, and now we’re trying to clean up a mess. We have a generation of teens addicted to nicotine, people continuing to get sick, and according to the (Centers for Disease Control) no definitive answers as to the culprit responsible for these cases,” Johnson said.

“With youth tobacco rates at an alltime low, kids who would have never picked up a traditional cigarette instead started using flavored e-cigarettes — proprietary flavors that are cocktails of known toxins in devices that are easily tampered with and adulterated,” she added.

In Illinois, more than 150 people have been sickened with lung injuries resulting from the inhalation of chemicals from vaping, according to the state’s Department of Public Health.

Warriors kick off playoffs with a win Three touchdowns apiece for Tumilty and Geanes; Warriors will play a second-round home game against Yorkville on Saturday

The Willowbrook football team opened the 2019 post-season with Friday’s 48-21 victory over Moline in an IHSA Class 7A contest in Villa Park.

The Warriors, who have won nine straight games, improved to 9-1.

They will play another home playoff game this Saturday. Willowbrook will face Yorkville (8-2) in Villa Park. The kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. Yorkville advanced to the second round with a 37-0 victory over Thornton Fractional South.

If the Warriors beat Yorkville, they will earn the program’s fourth straight trip to the quarterfinal round of the playoffs. Willowbrook would face either Hersey or Lake Zurich in this year’s quarterfinals.

“We came out and set the tone right away,” said Willowbrook coach Nick Hildreth after the first-round win over the Maroons.

Senior quarterback Sam Tumilty and senior running back Ta’Vion Geanes each scored three touchdowns in the win over Moline (5-5).

The Warriors held a 14-0 lead after

one quarter. Their lead stood at 28-14 at halftime. Willowbrook scored the first two touchdowns of the second half to hike its lead to 41-14.

Tumilty piled up 222 rushing yards against Moline. Geanes picked up 138 rushing yards.

“Both of them ran well,” said Hildreth of the two seniors. “Sam did a good job improvising when things break down, which he always does.

Ta’Vion really came on strong and ran the ball hard as the game went on.”

Geanes scored the Warriors’ first touchdown on a 7-yard run. About two minutes later, Tumilty broke a 55-yard touchdown run. Sophomore kicker Izzy Manning, who made six of seven extra-point attempts during the game, added the conversion kick after Tumilty’s long run to push the lead to 14-0.

Moline scored its first touchdown on an 85-yard pass in the second quarter; the extra-point kick cut the Warriors’ lead to 14-7. Tumilty helped the Warriors regain the momentum by breaking his second 55yard touchdown run of the night.

Moline scored a touchdown with about two minutes left in the first half to cut Willowbrook’s lead to 21-14. Tumilty broke a run of about 40 yards on the ensuing drive to set up his third touchdown run of the night—a 1-yard run with about 45 seconds left in the first half. Manning’s extra-point kick gave the Warriors a 28-14 advantage.

Tumilty threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to senior Everett Stubblefield with less than five minutes left in the third quarter. Geanes scored on a 1-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter to increase the Warriors’ lead to 41-14.

“I think it’s great that we have both our run game and our pass game going,” said Tumilty following the win. “It all starts on the front line.

We have some great linemen setting everything up for us.”

Moline scored its third and final touchdown of the night with about three minutes left in the game. Moments later, after senior Alessio Battaglia recovered Moline’s onside kick, Geanes broke a 45-yard touchdown run down the middle of the field.

Tumilty has now passed for 2,039 yards (21 TDs, 5 interceptions) and run for 1,146 yards (15 rushing touchdowns). Geanes is up to 631 yards and eight scores. Tumilty’s two favorite receivers are seniors Everett Stubblefield III (46 catches, 934 yards, 11 TDs) and Deandre Holliday (33 catches, 649 yards, 7 TDs).

The Yorkville Foxes play out of the Southwest Prairie Conference West Division. The Foxes did not win the conference, finishing third behind champion Minooka and second-place Oswego. Of the Foxes’ eight wins, five came against teams with regular-season winning records. In fact, their last five games have been against teams with winning records (3-2 record in that span).

Thornton Fractional South, Yorkville’s first-round opponent, was 6-3, but had only played three teams with winning records during the regular season.

Up next: The winner of this game heads to the 7A quarterfinals against either No. 4 seed Hersey (9-1) or No. 20 seed Lake Zurich (7-3). Either way, if Willowbrook wins this contest, it will head to Arlington Heights or Lake Zurich in the quarterfinals. Hersey will have hosted only once and would be the higher seed (4 vs. 5) and Lake Zurich will have hosted only once compared to Willowbrook’s two home playoff games. Lake Zurich upset No. 13 Andrew 14-7 in the first round. Hersey steamrolled No. 29 Rockford Auburn 49-0.

Willowbrook girls volleyball team wraps up 2019 season

Warriors win 20 games; Ceh reaches 500-dig mark; future bright

The Willowbrook girls volleyball team concluded its 2019 season after a 25-20, 25-14 setback to Hinsdale Central in the semifinals of the Class 4A York Regional in Elmhurst on Oct. 29.

“We started off great,” said Willowbrook coach Irene Mason. “We were winning all of the first set until about point 19. They had a little run and won 25-20 and then we came out flat in the second set. Hinsdale is a strong team. We came out and got behind and tried to make a comeback.”

Willowbrook finished the season with a 20-16 record.

“I’m absolutely happy,” Mason said. “We had a lot of girls improve throughout the season.”

One in particular was junior Stephanie Dasbach.

“She’s a middle for us and is a good athlete,” Mason said. “At the beginning of the season she was a little raw when it comes to volleyball skills, but the more she worked the better she became. She had a lot of growth to the point she is someone we can very much count on.”

Senior libero Payton Ceh had an outstanding season, finishing with an even 500 digs out of the back row.

“Payton was a standout for us,” said Mason. “To finish with an even 500 digs is amazing, plus she also had 105 kills as a libero.”

Mason also lauded the development of junior Grace Reckamp.

“Grace Reckamp not only showed a lot of improvement from last year, but also became a leader. She led us in multiple areas. She led us in kills, assists and service aces and with her natural leadership ability through her personality. She’s back for us next year and that will be huge.”

Mason said the Warriors will be in a good place next season with a key core of experienced players returning.

“The future for us is very strong,” she said. “We do lose four seniors, including Ceh and Alondra Mendoza, who played very key roles for us.

Payton is a huge loss and someone will have to step up and fill those shoes, but we do have a lot of returners. I expect they will play a lot of volleyball, condition and work hard over the next few months. They will continue to improve. We’re very hopeful for next year. We lost eight seniors last year so four doesn’t seem so bad.”

Mason pointed out sophomore Elizabeth Bruschuk will return after missing the entire 2019 season due to injury.

“Elizabeth will be completely healed and will return,” she said.

“She started practicing with us at the end of the season. She will be ready for her club season and come back as a junior next fall with us. We expect big things next year. When Payton went down last year, Lizzie stepped

Freshman Natalie Cipriano finished second on the varsity in kills and also is back for the 2020 campaign.

“Natalie did great for us,” said Mason. “We have a lot of kids returning in key roles.”

In the Hinsdale Central contest, Reckamp finished with six kills, eight assists and two digs. Cipriano collected four kills and Dasbach had three. Ceh totaled 19 digs, while Linnig racked up eight digs and four assists. Ostrowski had three digs.

Sanfilippo becomes first Addison Trail girls cross country runner to qualify for state

Sanfillippo, a junior, became the first Addison Trail girls cross country runner to qualify for the state finals meet.

Sanfilippo was one of seven individual state qualifiers out of the Class 3A Lake Park Sectional held at Lake Park East Campus in Roselle. She covered the East Campus layout in 18:30.5 and kept a 6:11-mile pace.

She will run Saturday in the Class 3A state finals meet at Detweiller Park in Peoria.

Sanfilippo was 11th at the Glenbard West regional and was the top individual qualifier there.

Addison Trail sophomore Maddie Ford finished in 105th place at the sectional with a time of 21:34.5.

Addison Trail-Willowbrook girls swimming The Addison Trail-Willowbrook coop girls swimming team placed second at both the varsity and junior varsity levels at the recent West Suburban Conference Gold Division meet held at Downers Grove South.

AT-Willowbrook was second in the 200 medley relay (2:02.48) with Delaney Gayon, Carly Zaprzal, Nancy Obrzut and Jessica Pociecha.

Pociecha took fourth in the 200 at 2:11.58. Caitlin Brennan was eighth in the 200 IM at 2:53.63. Obrzut end-

ed fifth in the 50 with a time of 26.58.

Zaprzal grabbed fourth place in the butterfly in 1:07.18.

Gayon was third in the 500 with a time of 5:52.45, while Pociecha was fourth in the same event at 5:57.53.

Kaitlyn Jaskier placed sixth in the 100 (1:01.68).

AT-Willowbrook took second in the 200 freestyle relay with DeAnna Tate, Cara Burns, Zaprzal and Obrzut swimming 1:51.36.

Gayon ended up fourth in the backstroke at 1:08.77. Zaprzal swam to a third-place finish in the breaststroke with a time of 1:13.66.

AT-Willowbrok was second in the 400 relay with Tate, Burns, Gayon and Pociecha going 4:05.27.

The squad finished with 216 points at the varsity level. Host Downers South won the conference title with 351 points.

In the athletes with disabilities division, AT-Willowbrook’s Mary Hassler took first in the 50 (41.96), 100 (1:34.82) and breaststroke (2:20.95).

The Warriors ran to a 10th-place finish in the team standings. The top five teams at the sectional advanced to the state meet, which takes place this weekend in Peoria.

Freshman Amelia Barrington led Willowbrook at the sectional with her 59th-place time of 20 minutes, 4.1 seconds in the 3-mile race. Junior Melissa Martinez (20:06.3) and senior Madeleine Wilkie (20:07.06) finished 61st and 62nd, respectively.

Sophomore Madeline Barrington (20:25.5; 71st) and senior Michelle Villalobos (20:45.3; 83rd) delivered the Warriors’ fourth- and fifth-best times at the sectional. Sophomore Lily Weder (21:19.2; 99th) and junior Daylee Braden (21:43.7; 110th) completed Willowbrook’s sectional lineup.

The three Willowbrook boys runners who qualified for the Lake Park Sectional as individuals also completed their season on Saturday. Junior Tyler King negotiated the 3-mile course in an 81st-place time of 16 minutes, 51.5 seconds. Senior Brandon Heselton completed the race in a 93rd-place time of 17:08.2, while junior Ben Cunneen (17:39.2) finished in 116th place.

Addison Trail girls volleyball team reaches regional title match Blazers turn in 23-win campaign

The Addison Trail girls volleyball team had an exciting finish to its 2019 season.

The Blazers reached their own Class 4A regional title match at home where they dropped a three-set contest to fellow West Suburban Conference Gold Division entrant Downers Grove South.

Downers South won the regional title by a count of 25-20, 15-25, 28-26.

DGS won the WSC Gold title this fall with Addison Trail finishing second.

“We had played them earlier in the season and were familiar with their lineups,” said Addison Trail coach Dan Styler. “It was a dogfight in the regional. It was an unbelievable match and I say that from the losing side. The victorious side would say the same thing as well. It was back and forth. We lost the first one and then beat them 25-15 in the second and lost in extra points.

“It was an epic battle in the third game. We cannot hang our heads. Our kids played as hard as they could. It was one of those matches that came down to that one extra play or that one extra ball moving a couple extra inches in our favor. Our kids played so hard. I’m very proud of their effort.”

Addison Trail opened regional play with a 25-23, 23-25, 25-16 triumph over Wheaton North.

“To Wheaton North’s credit they played significantly better than the first time we played them this season,” said Styler. “It took us a little time to get settled into the first set and that carried into the second set. We finished with a strong effort in the third set. It was really good to see us put the

pressure on. We served well and that put pressure on Wheaton North. That changed the trajectory.”

Addison Trail finished the season with a 23-14 mark.

“We will take it,” Styler said. “20win seasons are not easy to come by and this one was not by accident. We put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into this season.”

The Blazers will graduate six seniors off this year’s roster, including Amy Reyes, a three-year varsity setter, Jessica D’Ambrose, a four-year varsity starter, Katrina Bielanski, a three-year varsity player, plus backrow anchors Nicole Bartosik and Pauline Wirbicki, along with defensive specialist Rachel Verdi.

“Those six will be missed,” Styler said. “It was a great group of seniors and ambassadors for this program.”

Styler said Addison Trail will retool for next season.

“The cupboard is not bare,” he said.

“We have some holes to fill, but we have three starters back.”

That trio includes versatile Mia Johnson, a junior who moved to rightside hitter this season, and Ally Severino, another junior who played in the middle. Sophomore middle Diana Villegas also started all year for the Blazers. Johnson and Severino have been on the varsity since sophomore season.

Addison Trail’s sophomore team went 25-5 this fall.

“Flexibility will be a key for us next year,” said Styler. “We have Mia, Ally and Diana back, plus the sophomores have a great season. There are some nice players on that team. We know they will go through a little bit of a learning curve with the varsity game.

We think through hard work and trial and error we have some nice players who will add to the varsity team.”

Fenton’s Elizondo headed to state cross country Krebasch, Zaggoti earn all-UEC girls volleyball honors

The Fenton boys cross country team will have representation at this weekend’s Class 2A state finals meet in Peoria.

Fenton senior Sam Elizondo earned one of seven individual qualifying positions out of the Class 2A Fenton sectional in Bensenville. Elizondo, now a three-time state qualifier, will run in Saturday’s Class 2A state meet at Detweiller Park in Peoria.

Elizondo earned his state ticket after finishing eighth overall in the sectional in 17:35. His time was second-fastest of the seven individual state qualifiers. He averaged 5:52 per mile.

Elizondo also qualified individ-

ually for state as a junior where he finished 66th. He also was part of the Fenton 2017 team that qualified for state. He finished 176th in state that year.

As a team, Fenton took eighth with 237 points and did not qualify for state.

Senior Jimmy Palumbo was 30th with a time of 18:18.7. Junior Matthew Sisto finished 57th with a time of 19:00.3, while junior Juan Sosa was 67th with a time of 19:08.

Freshman Victor Vazquez was 79th with a time of 19:27.5 and classmate Emilio Sanchez was 98th with a time of 20:21. Sophomore Konstantinos Papadopoulos finished 106th in 20:53.6.

Girls volleyball The Fenton girls volleyball team wrapped up its season with a recent 25-13, 25-19 loss to Trinity in the semifinals of the Class 3A Fenton regional in Bensenville.

Fenton was the No. 8 seed in the Vernon Hills sectional, while Trinity was the No. 8 seed.

The Bison closed out the 2019 season with a 17-17 mark.

Fenton finished the regular season with a 25-15, 25-21 non-conference win against Elmwood Park and lost 25-13, 25-12 to West Chicago to close out Upstate Eight Conference play. Fenton finished 3-6 in UEC action in its first year in the conference.

Heading into the playoffs, Julianna Krebasch was leading the Bison in kills and blocks, while Noha Zaggoti was the team leader in service aces, assists and digs.

In fact, Krebasch and Zaggoti were recently named to the all-UEC team.

“We felt really good getting two girls recognized in our first year in that conference. Both are very deserving,” said Coach Kelly Torres. “Setting has been a strength of ours all season. We know Noha will be ready to go.”

A bill allowing college athletes in Illinois to be paid for the use of their image, name and likeness passed the state House Oct. 30 with broad bipartisan support after lengthy debate.

Rep. Emanuel “Chris” Welch, D-Hillside, pushed ahead with House Bill 3904 despite an Oct. 29 announcement from the NCAA which said it would “start the process” of changing its rules to allow athletes to profit from their name and likeness.

During floor debate, Welch called the NCAA statement a “PR stunt” which “completely lacks substance.”

“Our bill has substance. Theirs is just a recommendation,” he said.

In its release, the NCAA said it directed each of its three athletic divisions to “immediately consider updates to relevant bylaws and policies for the 21st century.”

The board asked each division to create any new rules no later than January 2021, but it is not yet clear how or when those changes will be implemented.

Welch’s bill would allow collegiate athletes to be paid for the use of their name and likeness and would prohib-

it the NCAA from punishing students who take part in the payment or the universities they attend. It would not allow for payment of salaries by universities.

“This is the right thing to do today, because it’s about equity and fairness,” Welch said, also calling the bill an “economic tool” for Illinois universities.

During floor debate, Welch took more than an hour of questioning from supporters and opponents of the bill, with many calling for greater discussion of protections of athletes and added language prohibiting unseemly endorsements, such as those from gambling companies. Welch committed to discussing follow-up legislation before his bill’s implementation in 2023.

Rep. Jeff Keicher, a Sycamore Republican who voted against the bill in committee, voted in favor of the measure on the floor. He questioned whether it would prioritize athletics over academics at the collegiate level.

Rep. Anthony DeLuca, a Chicago Heights Democrat, went a step further, calling the bill “a dagger in the heart of amateur athletics.”

But Rep. Steve Reick, a Woodstock Republican, said the NCAA essential-

ly serves as an “unpaid minor league system” for pro sports. He said prohibiting students from profiting from their likeness outside of the sports arena is “a little crazy,” and he voted for the bill.

“If you get recruited to play quarterback at the University of Alabama, Clemson, University of Georgia, … you’re going there to further your education as a football player. Let’s not pretend, let’s not put some sort of a cover over this,” he said.

Rep. Tom Demmer, a Dixon Republican, said he would like to see follow-up legislation protecting students from entering into predatory contracts which could force them to give up naming and likeness rights for years down the line.

Welch said the bill requires any endorsement contract to be disclosed to universities and requires agents to be licensed with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulations.

The bill passed 86-25 with three present votes and will head to the Senate for further consideration when the General Assembly returns for the final three days of the veto session beginning Nov. 12.
