Athletico Physical Therapy opens in Bensenville On Friday, Nov. 9, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held for Athletico Physical Therapy to celebrate the opening of their brand new facility located at 460 W. Irving Park Rd, Suite G, in Bensenville.

Athletico Bensenville offers a variety of physical therapy, rehabilitation and work conditioning services.

This new location is one of more than 425 facilities located throughout 11 states.

The event offered attendees the opportunity to explore the new space while also getting to meet the Athletico team members.

“I am looking forward to making Athletico Bensenville an integral, beneficial member of the Bensenville community,” said Facility Man-

ager Sarah Glawe. “I look forward to making an impact on the Bensenville community by improving the health, wellness, and quality of life for residents of all ages and needs.”

Those in attendance included Village President Frank DeSimone, members of the Bensenville Chamber of Commerce, Athletico representatives, and Village staff.

“With Athletico committed to becoming a central member of the Bensenville community, I wish Sarah and the rest of the Athletico team the best of luck,” said Village President Frank DeSimone. “It is my hope that this new location will make it easier for residents to get the physical therapy treatment they need right here in Bensenville.”

Zoning Hearing held to support Comprehensive Plan

This public hearing is part of several public outreach events that have taken place in the last few months to give residents the opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback.

Those who attended the meeting included CDC members, elected officials, Village staff, Bensenville residents, CMAP representatives and additional stakeholders including local businesses and taxing bodies.

On Tuesday, Oct. 30, the Village of Bensenville Community Development Commission held a public hearing to address the adoption of a new Village Zoning ordinance. Approximately 60 residents attended the meeting where they provided comments and asked questions regarding the updates.

This project is a partnership between the Village of Bensenville and the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP). The goal of the new ordinance is to modernize regulations to make them more user friendly, retain character of established neighborhoods, address areas of change and align development regulations with recently adopted plans.

EMH Foundation’s Reindeer Route Housewalk coming Friday, Dec. 7 The Elmhurst Memorial Hospital (EMH) Foundation will host its 42nd Annual Reindeer Route Housewalk on Friday, Dec. 7. Sponsors of the event include the Elmhurst Memorial Hospital medical staff, the Jel Sert Company and the SEI Institutional Group.

A portion of proceeds from the 2018 Reindeer Route Housewalk will benefit the Teen Volunteer Health Profession Scholarship fund, which also includes the Marilyn A. Graber Teen Scholarship. The scholarships are for EMH teen volunteers interested in pursuing a career in healthcare.

The Housewalk, with two sessions, from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. and from 6 – 9 p.m. and features seven Elmhurst homes decorated for the holidays by local florists: • 203 E. Edward-Elmhurst Health honored more than 40 employees, physicians and volunteers who are active duty or retired military veterans at a Veterans Recognition Breakfast on Nov. 13 at Elmhurst Hospital. Each was presented with a mug with an American flag that reads, “We Honor Our Veterans.”

EEHealth honors its own veterans 13 at Elmhurst Hospital. Those who attended were presented with a mug featuring an American flag with the words, “We Honor Our Veterans.”

In all, EEH employs more than 150 veterans.

Employee acknowledgement is just one aspect of Edward-Elmhurst’s Veterans Recognition Program, which began in 2016. The system also honors patients who are military veterans with an American flag pin,

bedside thank you card, door hanger placed outside the patient’s room to identify him/her as a veteran and meals delivered on trays with specially designed place mats and table tents.

Obama’s political career in Illinois helped shape his presidency

A decade ago, he claimed victory in the presidential campaign from Grant Park in Chicago.

He announced his run — and later his running mate — on ground trod by Abraham Lincoln at the Old State Capitol.

And, yes, he also quoted Ronald Reagan on occasion.

Like the first two, Barack Obama wasn’t born here, but chose to live in Illinois and make his reputation within these borders.

While his post-presidency may not — at least for now — feature a Chicago address, his time in Chicago and its politics helped clarify his presidential character to the world, and prepare him for the task.

So, too, did the world under the

“I think coming from an industrial, agricultural state with a lot of cultural diversity was such a great learning experience for him,” says Ray LaHood, Obama’s former secretary of transportation.

That experience started in Chicago, and it began at a fortuitous moment.

The diagnosis from an end-of-presidency analysis by Chicago magazine points to Obama’s arrival on the Windy City scene at

the right time, during the mayoralty of Harold Washington, and his growth in the political world during the election and term of Sen. Carol Moseley Braun — two trailblazing African-American politicians.

Obama himself noted much the same about the connection to Washington’s era, writing in “Dreams of My Father” that his election as the city’s first African-American mayor “had given (the) people a new idea of themselves. Or maybe it was an old idea, born of a simpler time. Harold was something they still held in common: like my idea of organizing, he held out an offer of collective redemption.”

U.S. Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., greets a large crowd gathered at the Old State Capitol in Springfield on Feb. 10, 2007, moments before announcing his candidacy for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination.

His nature as something of an outsider — at least not someone raised from birth in Chicago’s political culture — also may have helped Obama.

“A traditional Chicago pol, tainted by the alliances and the deal-making of the city’s shady political culture, could never succeed on a national stage,” the piece notes.

Most people know Obama’s thumbnail-sketch biography: community organizer, president of the Harvard Law Review, state legislator, U.S. senator, president. But one initiative that gets less attention now is one that helped propel him to local fame.

After law school and before the Legislature, during those few years of private legal practice that fly under the radar, Obama led a major voter registration drive — the biggest in Chicago history to that point.

Project Vote put more than 125,000 more voters on the rolls in 1992, many of them minorities, and it got people talking about a possible political future for him.

Weeks later, the man whose 2008 presidential candidacy would later be credited with spikes in minority and youth voting said in a Chicago magazine story on the registration effort, “I think it’s fair to say we reinvigorated a slumbering constituency. We got people to take notice.”

That’s one of many themes he later took to a national campaign and the presidency that were first sounded in the Windy City.

When he first ran for the Legislature, he said this about his organizing efforts in a 1995 interview with the Chicago Reader: “In America, we have this strong bias toward individual action. You know, we idolize the John Wayne hero who comes in to correct things with both guns blazing. But individual actions, individual dreams, are not sufficient. We must unite in collective action, build collective institutions and organizations.”

And this, too, in the Chicago Reader, from a man whose presidential campaigns grew leaders from the grass roots.

“Three major doubts have been raised,” he said. The first is whether in today’s political environment — with its emphasis on media and money — a grass-roots movement can even be created. Will people still answer the call of participatory politics?

“Second,” Obama said, “many believe that the country is too racially polarized to build the kind of multiracial coalitions necessary to bring

about massive economic change.

“Third, is it possible for those of us working through the Democratic Party to figure out ways to use the political process to create jobs for our communities?”

Other experiences along the way also helped him develop beyond those early days – not only living in a city “with its politics 24-7,” but the personalities that it contains helped prepare him for that world, LaHood says.

So, too, did his single loss, taking on U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush for a seat in Congress in 2000.

“I think the fact that ... he lost his election in the congressional race was probably as good a lesson as you can learn in politics on what to do and what not to do,” LaHood said.

“That was, while probably painful, a good lesson for him to learn.”

So was learning about the state that exists beyond the borders of Cook County.

Once in the Senate, Obama got to know lawmakers from all corners of the state, including Sen. Denny Jacobs in the Quad Cities and Sen. George Shadid from Peoria.

“He learned a lot from George Shadid and central Illinois – and I’m sure that was true of all senators,” LaHood says, pointing to the reunion Obama staged with former colleagues after a valedictory visit to the Illinois Legislature late in his term to visit with longtime pals under the dome.

Some of those friendships made it easier to run for U.S. Senate, already having an understanding of downstate interests and priorities. And geographic proximity helped when he turned his eyes to the presidency.

“When he started running for president, you didn’t have to show him where Davenport was, having represented the Quad Cities. Or Muscatine, having been to Quincy,” LaHood says.

One more legacy, too, that Obama took from his adopted state and his early political career.

He and LaHood played golf earlier this year, and the latter says that Obama’s love of the links developed in the statehouse.

On slow session days, LaHood relates that the young senator noticed colleagues clearing out of the Capitol in the late afternoon, and learned that many were adjourning to golf courses in town. So he took up the sport himself.

“He really learned how to play golf on courses in Springfield,” LaHood says.

Bond set for two men charged in West Chicago murder DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and West Chicago Chief of Police Michael Uplegger announced last that bond has been set for two men accused of killing 26-year-old Alexander Nicolas in West Chicago late last week. Juan Calderon, 21 (d.o.b. 9/27/1997) of Aurora, and Emilio Guillen, 27 (d.o.b. 1/28/1991) of Rockford, appeared before Judge Jeffrey Mackay who set bond at $4 million with 10% to apply for Calderon and $2 million with 10% to apply for Guillen. Both men have been charged with

one count of First Degree Murder.

According to the State’s Attorney’s report, on Friday, Nov. 9, at approximately 7:34 a.m., West Chicago police responded to a 9-1-1 call of a man found lying on the ground in the 600 block of E. Forest Avenue. Upon their arrival, officers found the victim, Nicolas, lying face up with blood coming from the back of his head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

With assistance from the Major Crimes Task Force, the West Chicago Police Department immediately initiated

an investigation. It is alleged that at approximately 11:19 p.m., on Nov. 8, the victim was near his vehicle on E. Forest Avenue when he was approached by the defendants and another man, co-defendant Fredi Bautista, 26, of West Chicago. It is further alleged that the defendants attacked and ultimately shot the victim in the head. It is alleged that Guillen gave the order to shoot the victim and that upon receiving the order, Calderon allegedly shot the victim in the head.

It is further alleged that following the murder,

the three men got into Guillen’s car and fled the scene. The investigation led to the three defendants. Calderon was taken into custody on Nov. 12 at his home. Guillen was taken into custody on Nov. 10 at his home. Bautista is currently in custody and was expected to appear in Bond Court the following morning.

He has been charged with one count of First Degree Murder.

Members of the public are reminded that these complaints contain only charges and are not proof of the defendants’ guilt.

VFW Post 7446 members visit Army Trail 4th graders Members of Addison’s Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7446 visited 4th grade students at Army Trail School on Wednesday, Nov. 14 to commemorate Veterans Day. The local VFW members, Post Commander Mike Henkelman, Glen Thomas, John Gardner, Jim Stepuncik and Charlie Harrell, demonstrated the memorial folding ceremony of an American flag.

They then spoke with the students about their service in the military during the Vietnam War, answering questions about which branch of the military they’d served in, the draft, and the conditions under which they served.

The VFW members also brought Buddy Poppies for each of the students. These small artificial flowers

are hand-made by disabled veterans and the sale of the flowers helps the VFW support disabled veterans.

Mrs. Joanne Bezad, an aide at Army Trail, showed students the poppies, as well as a book, The Poppy Lady: Moina Belle Michael and Her Tribute to Veterans, that she donated to the Army Trail School library. The Poppy Lady tells the story of how Moina worked to establish the red poppy as a symbol to honor and remember soldiers.

The 4th grade classes presented the visitors with cards and thanked them for their service. Before they left the school, the VFW members also visited 5th grade classes to talk to and take pictures with students they’d met with at this same event last year.

Resident urges opposition to The FIRST STEP Act I am asking my neighbors and elected representatives to oppose The FIRST STEP Act, which may make its way to the U.S. Senate soon, after passing the House this summer.

Any feeling person would be drawn to the humane aspects of the Act that seem to call for an end to, for example, shackling women during childbirth. Unfortunately, the language in the Act provides so many exceptions that would still allow for restraining a woman during labor, that I suspect that there could be no reduction in this horrific practice. This is just one example illustrating that a careful reading of the Act will show it’s not designed to accomplish its purported mission.

The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights—including ACLU, NAACP, NOW, and SPLC— oppose The First Step Act. According to the Leadership Conference, “the Act falls short on its promise to ‘meaningfully’ tackle the problems in the federal justice system - racial disparities, draconian mandatory minimum sentences, persistent overcrowding, lack of rehabilitation, and the exorbitant costs of incarceration.”

Importantly, the Bureau of Prisons already has broad authority to make the majority of the promising changes through administrative action.

What The FIRST STEP Act would

accomplish, however, is an expansion of the cruelties of e-carceration, “reforms” that use electronic monitoring and other forms of often-privatized surveillance to build digital prisons that line the pockets of prison telecommunication companies while further extending control into people’s homes and daily lives. Further, the Act contains plenty of measures to expand the demand for federal prison labor. This should alarm us all, as we witness incarcerated people in California—including children— battle fires while making dollars a day and being ineligible for firefighting employment upon release due to their status.

We shouldn’t pretend that prison labor gives people skills they can use open release, when that is oftentimes not the case. Another troubling aspect of The FIRST STEP is that many groups—including undocumented immigrants—are ineligible for the programs and benefits (including free phone calls home and extra family visitation) provided by the Act. I understand why many kind people are drawn to supporting The FIRST STEP Act. But I ask people to investigate further, and ultimately join me in opposing the Act. Elizabeth Collins

Nicor Gas joins effort for National Utility Scam Awareness Day Last week, the Independent received the following release from Nicor Gas: We hold ourselves accountable to the customers and communities we serve first and foremost. That’s why Nicor Gas is joining other U.S. and Canadian companies to protect natural gas customers against utility scams.

The Utilities United Against Scams consortium has designated Nov. 14 as Utility Scam Awareness Day. This initiative supports a weeklong campaign designed to expose the tactics scammers use to steal money from customers and provide advice on how they can protect themselves.

Although there are several scam

tactics, a common one involves unsolicited phone calls to customers by an individual who falsely claims to be a company representative. The scammer warns that the company will disconnect the customer’s natural gas service if a payment is not made within a short timeframe.

Other common tactics include impostor utility scams that duplicate a company’s upfront Interactive Voice Response system, so when customers call back phone numbers provided by the scammer, it appears to be legitimate.

Some of these scammers also use caller ID spoofing to replicate a company’s customer service number.

Below are additional tips to help identify and protect against scammers:

Red flags for scam activity • The individual becomes angry and tells the customer his or her account is past due, and service will be disconnected if a large payment isn’t made – usually within less than an hour.

• The individual instructs the customer to purchase a pre-paid debit or credit card – widely available at retail stores – then call him or her back to supposedly make a payment to the company.

• The individual asks the customer for the prepaid card’s receipt number and PIN number, which grants instant access to the card’s funds.

Customers who suspect or experience fraud or feel threatened during contact with an individual posing as a company representative, should contact local authorities, and then the customer care center phone number listed on their bill.

Glenbard East student charged with threatening school Threats to school not a joke: Berlin DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Lombard Chief of Police Roy Newton announced on Tuesday, Nov. 13, that a male Glenbard East student had been charged with posting a threatening Snapchat video directed at his school. The juvenile appeared in Juvenile Court on that afternoon where Judge Robert Anderson ordered the juvenile be released to the custody of his parents on home detention.

On Monday, Nov. 12, 2018, Lombard police received information regarding a threatening Snapchat video post in which a male was allegedly seen holding a gun while threatening, “1, 2, 3, all the kids will leave. They’re not so cool because I’ll shoot up the school.” [Ed. note: Names of juveniles 17 and younger are not published.]

An investigation into the post conducted by the Lombard Police Department led to the juvenile as the person who allegedly made the post. He was taken into custody later the same day without incident.

“As I have said many times in the past, students have got to learn that

any threatening message directed at a school is not a joke,” Berlin said.

“Any threat made against a school, whether made in jest or not, will be taken seriously and thoroughly investigated. Make no mistake, once

we identify the source of any threat, charges will be filed accordingly.”

The juvenile has been charged with two counts of False Report of a Threat to a School, a Class 4 Felony.

His next court appearance was

scheduled for Nov. 21, 2018 in front of Judge Anderson.

Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the juvenile’s guilt.

Local blood bank to support Northern Illinois Food Bank

Addison Trail boys basketball team looking to take next step Mehmeti, Daniels now three-year varsity players for Blazers

Versatility is the name of the game this season for the Addison Trail boys basketball team.

Coach Brendan Lyons, now in his 12th season at the helm, likes the depth of his team and his ability to put players in different positions as need arises.

“We have the ability to go with a couple different looks,” said Lyons.

“We don’t have great size, but we have some size and can put lineups out there with guys who are 6-2 to 6-4. The big picture is we have some returning guys, some transfers and some other seniors coming back so we like to think we have some good depth.”

Addison Trail went 11-20 last year and 1-11 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division play.

Back for the Blazers are a pair of three-year players in shooting guard Adem Mehmeti (6-4, senior) and

small forward JT Daniels (6-3, senior), who was an all-WSC Gold pick last year.

Junior AJ Carlson (6-2, guard) is back after moving up to the varsity late in the season last year as a sophomore.

“We have 10 seniors on the team and a lot of guys who played JV last year that we expect will contribute,” said Lyons. “We also have two senior transfers who will play for us out of the gate.”

Those senior transfers include point guard Sheldon Allgood (5-7, guard), who previous played at Oak Park-River Forest. “We’re excited about what Sheldon brings. We’ve lacked depth at the point-guard position in the past. He’s explosive in the open floor and can penetrate and shoot. We expect good things from him at that position.”

Senior small forward K’Vhon Pounds (6-5) transferred from Chicago Noble Charter. “He’s a guy who can go bigger than his size,” said Lyons. “He’s good on the perimeter and athletic.”

Sophomore Robert Roszkiewicz (6-6, forward) will help in the post,

but he is recovering from a foot injury and isn’t expected back until after the Thanksgiving holiday.

“We’ll look for him to contribute as the season progresses,” said Lyons of Roszkiewicz.

Other key contributors will include seniors Terry Thompson (511, guard), Justin Werderitch (6-3, forward) and John Baumgartner (64, forward). Lyons said Thompson and Werderitch will be in the starting lineup to start the season, while Baumgartner works his way back from an injury. “Terry and Justin will be in there and will get first crack at it,” said Lyons. “I like our versatility at both ends of the floor. I think, at times, we could play five guards and not be overmatched with size.

We also have the option to play big depending on the opponent.”

Lyons said success this season will boil down to some key tenets he speaks of each season. “The deal for us every year is offensively can we commit to what we are doing and executing it whether it’s set plays or being in the half court,” he said. “Defensively we have to be adaptable to a variety of teams we will see in the

league and throughout the year. On paper when we are healthy I like our depth and I like or versatility to have guys in different spots. We’ll see how things shake out.”

Addison Trail opened play in the Elmwood Park Thanksgiving tournament earlier this week with games against Chicago Foreman, Chicago North Town and Elmwood Park. The Blazers will play a crossover place

game against a foe from the Ridgewood Thanksgiving tournament on Saturday in Norridge.

Addison Trail has won the Elmwood Park tournament the last four years. “Hopefully we can get off to a quick start and see our returning guys take the next step in the game as leaders and our newcomers get their feet wet with varsity competition,” said Lyons.

Fenton boys cross country team made strides this fall

The Fenton boys cross country team created a number of key highlights during the recently completed fall season.

The Bison finished fifth overall in the Metro Suburban Conference. Junior Sam Elizondo and sophomore Matt Sisto earned all-MSC honors.

Elizondo took seventh at the conference meet with a time of 16:41, while Sisto took 11th in 16:52.

“Sam has been the top Fenton fin-

isher at every meet this year,” said Bisons’ coach Patrick Fritsch. “He continued to improve heading into the IHSA state series.”

Elizondo took third at the St. Viator regional with a time of 16:34 and helped Fenton take fourth as a team and advance to sectionals. At the sectional meet, Elizondo finished third with a time of 16:09 and earned a spot in the Class 2A state finals meet in Peoria where he took 66th with a

York Hockey hosts Spirit Night and fight against cancer The York Hockey Club has been busy both on and off the ice recently.

When not battling opponents from the always-tough Scholastic Hockey League (SHL), the club has been working to support two worthwhile causes.

On November 9th, the club hosted it annual Spirit Night. The event included not only games from the Varsity and JV squads, but also an off-ice raffle

featuring themed gift baskets and other items donated by families and area vendors. This year’s “Puck Cancer” themed night enjoyed record setting attendance. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Matt Haller Family.

Haller is a York Hockey Club Alumni, and the money will go in support of his continued fight against cancer. Funds will also be donated to the not-for-profit organization CancerResearch.org

“The York Hockey Club takes pride in doing our part to give back to the community,” said York Hockey Club President Jamie Ray. “We just wrapped our annual Spirit Night which was a huge success and our biggest turnout ever!”

With one successful charity event in the books, Duke players are now turning their attention to the Club’s annual Toys for Tots event, set for Friday,

Dec. 7, when the Dukes host SHL rival Barrington Hockey Club at the Addison Ice Rink. The Varsity game is set for a 7:10 p.m. puck drop. The J.V. game follows at 9:00 p.m.

Players are currently soliciting donations of new and unwrapped toys from family, friends, neighbors and businesses to bring to the rink on Dec. 7th. The toys will be displayed and presented to representatives from the

U.S. Marine Corps who will be on hand for the game. The Marine Corps will distribute the toys to local children in need.

Addison Trail-Willowbrook girls swimming standout Haake ends high-school career at state finals

Time flies when you are having fun.

That certainly has been the case for Addison Trail-Willowbrook coop girls swimmer Elissa Haake.

Haake, a Willowbrook student, wrapped up her high-school swimming career recently by competing the girls state swimming finals in Evanston where she took 10th in the state in the 200 freestyle and also competed in the 500 freestyle.

Haake ends her AT-Willowbrook career as a four-time state qualifier.

She’s headed to Division I Purdue University to swim next season.

For Haake, success in the 200 this season came via increased strength training. “Last year I kind of realized I needed more leg strength,” she said.

“I needed to be strong throughout the race. I started lifting a lot more and

working on my kick work more in practice. My kick became so much more powerful. It turned into sprinting more than pacing.”

Haake went into the state finals meet in Evanston two-tenths of a second off her personal best time.

“Considering I’m not tapered yet, that’s very exciting,” she said earlier last week.

Haake pointed out her best in-season time this year was a 1:54 and last year it was 1:56. She ended up going 1:51.28 in the state prelims last weekend and finished at 1:52.43 in the finals.

“It shows some of the leg work I’ve done and the strength I’ve gained,” she said last week. “It’s the little things. I feel a good drop (in time at state) coming on for sure.”

Haake’s foray into the 500 freestyle has an interesting story to it.

“I’d never done the 500 in high

school before this year,” she said.

“I was real excited to try it. In club I was doing it more and more often. At a travel meet in Indianapolis, I hadn’t swam it in nine months and dropped five seconds. That was cool. I kept doing it and slowly decided to do it in high school instead of the 100.

When I was a freshman I did the 50 and 100. Over time the coaches told me I was way more of a 200 and 500 swimmer. My stroke was so much more a natural fit for the 2 and the 5.

Again, Haake swam two-tenths off her personal best time in the 500 at the sectional this season at 5:04.29.

In state prelims this past weekend, Haake finished at 5:03.73 and took 16th in the state.

In addition to making state in the 50 and 100 and the 200 relay as a freshman, Haake qualified for state in the 200 and 100 as a sophomore and junior.

During the recruiting process I was looking for a school that had a really great family and team environment and was competitive as a whole and also offered great academics. Originally I looked into the Ivy League schools, but those are way far away.

Purdue is two hours from home and it’s actuary science program (which she plans on majoring in) is No. 1 in the country.”

Haake took a visit there last February and came away immediately impressed.

“I just knew that was the team I was supposed to be with,” she said.

“They were so open and amazing.

I’m so excited to be there. The coaches care about you and want to know you as a person. Purdue is where I’m supposed to be.”

The season is a short amount of time. It’s so much more intense. I love it. But, it has been four years and it’s time to move on.”

Future bright for Fenton girls swimming program

Fenton girls swimming coach Dan Hennebry has plenty of reasons to be excited about his program.

Fenton wrapped up the season at the varsity level with a seventh-place conference finish, earning the exact same point total as the previous year at 69 points. The Fenton junior-varsity team took fifth at conference, its highest finish in recent years “due to the strong group of developing freshmen swimmers,” said Hennebry.

Sophomore Izabella Niemczuk had a strong conference meet. She had personal bests in the butterfly and breaststroke. In the breaststroke, Niemczuk was Fenton’s lone medalist with a fifth-place time of 1:12.85.

Junior Gabby Molinaro had personal-best times in the 50 and 100, scoring key team points. Other varsity and JV swimmers with best times and contributing to the team scoring included Abby Niehoff, Kylie Peterson, Emily Trzmielewski, Marry Connor, Emily Grimaldo, Jennifer Quintanilla, Sophia Guadarrama, Hannah Ceaser, Alexandria DeVito and Kim Wolf.

Fenton finished 4-6 overall, including dual and triangular meets.

Hennebry lauded seniors Kim Wolf, Jessica Cox and junior Molinaro for providing leadership and guidance to the team over the course of the season.

Hennebry noted Fenton has a strong foundation in place at the underclass level. “The strength go-

“Sam had an amazing sectional race and once again handled the early fast pace at the state meet to finish 66th,” said Fritsch.

Looking back on the season, Fritsch noted the strength of the team lies in its depth. “After Sam finishing as our No. 1 runner, the rest of our top 7 was pretty fluid,” said Fritsch.

“This helped a lot of younger runners gain some valuable experience; especially with having five underclassmen competing in the state series.

This opportunity for the younger guys to compete on the varsity really helped the freshmen and sophomores buy into our training program. We had a lot of younger guys step up and run on our top seven this season.”

Fritsch added sophomores Chris Kovich and Juan Sosa along with freshman Aaron Paz all were thrust into varsity roles due to injuries to a few of the team’s upperclassmen.

“While the season may not have ended in our ultimate goal of the team qualifying to the state meet, it still was successful in other aspects,” said Fritsch. “We had multiple freshmen runners, some unable to run three miles at the start of the season, improve their three-mile personal best to under 19 minutes. The athletes and coaches still have a lot of growing to do, but the foundation has been set for great success going forward. We need to continue to strengthen and lengthen our roster. Cross country always is accompanied by stories of diamonds in the rough that are just in need of discovery.”

Hennebry also is excited about the program’s diving component. “Diving is a sport that is an opportunity for students with athletic skill but no formal training to be part of the Fenton swim and dive team,” he said.

“This year’s team had the welcome addition of junior Emily Trzmielewski as our ‘new’ springboard diver.

Emily contributed strongly to team scoring. Emily also is a gymnast and runs track. Her athletic skills enabled

her to also swim freestyle to help our team scoring. Her continued development and the addition of new divers is a team goal. If you haven’t picked your sport yet or are thinking of a change, accept the challenge and come out for diving next year. There is unlimited opportunity as we teach you to be a competitive diver.”

Hennebry noted Niemczuk continues to lead the team by her “consistent performances and hard work,” he said. “Junior Hannah Tibbetts also is notable by using all her talents and leading by example.”

Where does Hennebry see his program headed? “The outlook is potentially strong with the returning group of underclassmen, along with the dedicated work going forward from Gabby Molinaro, Hannah Tibbetts, Hannah Ceaser, Emily Trzmielewski, Izabella Niemczuk, Kylie Peterson, Jenny Dutan, and our freshmen eight of Abby Niehoff, Jenny Quintanilla, Sophie Guadarrama, Emily Grimaldo, Jessenia Loya, Alexandria DeVito, Emily Heath and Mary Connor.”

Back to state title game for IC Catholic Prep football team

Black Friday for the IC Catholic Prep football team has taken on a new meaning in recent times.

Instead of hitting the stores to kick off holiday shopping this season, the Knights will do what they have done for the past three years now—attempt to procure another state football championship.

The Knights were 28-9 winners at home against Richmond-Burton in one Class 4A state semifinal contested at Lewis Stadium at Plunkett Athletic Complex. IC Catholic Prep is the No. 1 seed in the top half of the Class 4A bracket. Richmond was the No. 3 seed.

The win sends IC Catholic Prep back to Memorial Stadium in Champaign Friday where it will attempt to win its third state championship in a row and fifth in program history. The Knights face familiar foe Bishop McNamara in the final starting at 7 p.m.

Bishop McNamara, the No. 3 seed in the bottom half of the Class 4A bracket which lost to IC Catholic Prep 21-20 in Elmhurst early this season, was a 52-42 winner over No. 4 Rochester (11-2) in the other Class 4A semifinal.

IC Catholic Prep (13-0) is shooting for its first Class 4A title. The 2002, 2016 and 2017 titles were won in Class 3A, while the 2008 title was won in Class 2A.
