Bensenville breaks ground on Holiday Inn Express

BENSENVILLE — On Saturday, November 7, the Village of Bensenville hosted a ground breaking ceremony at 777 East Grand Avenue with developer and hotel owner Sonny Shah for a new Holiday Inn Express Hotel near O’Hare International Airport.

The Holiday Inn Express will have 102 rooms and feature many great amenities such as a business center, fitness center, indoor pool, and breakfast bar.

This hotel will join an existing Country Inn & Suites, which is also owned by Shah. A plan is in place to add an additional hotel as well as a standalone restaurant to create a hotel park on this site. The Village also owns a large portion of remaining land and is actively seeking proposals for development.

This project marks a tremendous investment in Bensenville and continues the revitalization of Bensenville’s East Business District, Village officials said.

“Bensenville’s location has always been great, but we want to be the best place to do business as well. We have worked very hard to do so.” said Village President Frank Soto. “Some of our best promoters are those who have recently located their business here and are now looking for more opportunities in Bensenville, such as Mr. Shah.”

District 88 events recognize Veterans Day

ddison Trail and Willowbrook High Schools hosted several events to recognize local servicemen and women. On Nov. 11, AT shared a video that featured veterans who have a

connection to the school. On Nov. 13, AT invited members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 7446 in Addison, the DeVry Military Resource Club, the Addison Police Department and Fire Protection

District to attend a luncheon in their honor. Students who plan to enlist in the military after graduation also attended.

A collage honoring servicemen and women with a connection to Addison Trail also was displayed in the media center at the school.

Those who drove by Willowbrook on Nov. 11 likely noticed

the Avenue of Flags at entrance to the parking lot in honor of Veterans Day and the school’s symbolic rock was painted as an American flag as well.

Willowbrook also hosted a Veterans Day assembly, where local first responders from the Villa Park fire and police departments were recognized, along with students who plan

to enlist in the military after they graduate. Also attending was State Sen. Tom Cullerton and members of the U.S. Armed Forces.

Several videos were shown to showcase the significance of Veterans Day, followed by a PowerPoint honoring soldiers with a connection to Willowbrook.

Addison Nov. 13 Michael D. Washburn, 22, of Villa Park, was arrested in the 300 block of State Street at around 3:51 a.m. Police said Washburn had a warrant out of the Illinois Department of Corrections. He also was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.

Nov. 12 • Frank J. Mitilieri, 32, of Addison, was arrested at around 9:50 a.m. Police said Mitilieri had an original warrant out of the Addison Police Department.

• Derwin A. Stovall, 47, of Addison, was arrested at a local store in the 1000 block of Rohlwing at around 10:17 p.m. and

charged with retail theft.

Nov. 11 • A 22-year-old Addison woman was arrested in the 100 block of Natalie Lane at around 1:11 a.m. and charged with domestic battery and interference with the reporting of domestic violence. Police said the suspect struck the victim in the face with her fist, and advised the victim not to call the police.

• Isiah M. Hatches-Deganhart, 20, of Addison, was arrested in the 800 block of College Blvd. at around 8:30 p.m. Police said Hatches-Deganhart had an original warrant out of the Addison Police Department.

• Jorge A. Valencia, 39, of Chicago, was arrested in the 400 block of Kay Avenue at around 11:09 p.m. and charged with reckless discharge of a firearm, violating the conceal-carry law.

Nov. 9 • Luis Flores, 18, of Addison, was arrested at a store in the 1000 block of Rohlwing Road at around 12:36 p.m. and charged with retail theft.

• Ernesto Ramirez-Rodriguez, 32, of Addison, was arrested in the 1-100 block of Michael Lane at around 5:50 p.m. and charged with disorderly conduct and obstructing identification.

Police said Ramirez-Rodriguez told his dog to “sic” towards a postal worker, and refused to provide a police officer with identification.

Nov. 7 Marcos E. Cardenas Jr., 20, of Addison, was arrested near 8th and Lake at around 6:24 a.m.

Subsequent to a traffic accident, police said Cardenas was found to be DUI. He was charged with DUI and no insurance, and was additionally cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and driving in the wrong lane.

Villa Park Nov. 6 Police said an unknown male driving a dark-colored 4-door vehicle near Monterey and Park pointed a shiny silver object at a male juvenile riding his bicycle in the area. The juvenile thought it could have possibly been a gun.

Nov. 5 • Alex Benitez, 19, of Addison; Rufus L. Conner, 19, of Addison; Donovan J. Mcleod, 20, of Addison; John N. Pausa, 19, of Addison; Eric P. Schmidt, 23, of Des Plaines; and Robert Schroeder, 35, of Downers Grove; were arrested in the 100 block of W. North Ave. at around 7:25 p.m. Benitez was charged with two counts of battery and mob action; Conner was charged with criminal damage to property and mob action; Schroeder was charged with disorderly conduct; and Pausa, Mcleod and Schmidt were each charged with mob action.

• Jose Gamez, 18, of Glendale Heights, was arrested in the 900 block of W. North Ave. at around 7:01 p.m. and charged with consumption of alcohol by a minor.

Oct. 26-Nov. 5 Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 700 block of S. Summit. Police said that between the above dates, a known suspect rummaged through the glove compartment, scattering its contents on the front seat. Nothing appeared to be missing. Charges are pending.

• James A. Geitz, 21, of Melrose Park, was arrested at a local store at around 11:26 p.m. and charged with retail theft.

• A 37-year-old woman from Villa Park was arrested in the 400 block of N. Gerard at around 12:03 a.m. and charged with two counts of domestic battery, two counts of battery and resisting a police officer.

• A male juvenile from Villa Park was arrested in the 600 block of S. Addison at around 11:43 p.m. and charged with burglary to a vehicle, criminal trespass to a vehicle and possession of tobacco by a minor.

Nov. 3 • Sebastian P. Quercia, 39, of Burr Ridge, was arrested near North and Chatham at around 6:45 p.m. Police said Quercia faced five counts of being wanted on a warrant.

• Burglary to a motor vehicle was reported in the 100 block of E. Madison at around 10:14 a.m. Police said a known suspect entered a victim’s unsecured vehicle while it was parked in the driveway and stole a wallet. Charges are pending.

• Theft was reported in the 100 block of W. Roosevelt. Police said that between 4:50 p.m. and 10:45 p.m., an unknown suspect stole the front driver’s side hub cap from a victim’s vehicle while it was parked in the lot.

• Burglary to a motor vehicle was reported in the 600 block of S. Summit. Police said that between 12:01 a.m. and 8:24 a.m., a known suspect entered a victim’s vehicle that was parked in the driveway and stole a pair of sunglasses. Charges are pending.

• A female juvenile from Villa Park was arrested at around 9:13 a.m. and charged with domestic battery.

Nov. 1 • Christopher Parker, 26, of Villa Park, was arrested near Route 83 and Highland at around 12:11 a.m. and charged with transportation of open alcohol in a motor vehicle, expired registration, driving while license suspended and no insurance.

• JuJuan Smith, 34, of Addison, was arrested in the 200 block of W. North Ave. at around 5:05 p.m. and charged with retail theft.

• Aggravated battery was reported in the 900 block of W. North at around 7:42 p.m.

Police said an unknown male suspect fired a gun towards a group of people in front of some buildings. One person was injured with a gunshot wound to the arm, and one vehicle was damaged. An investigation continues.

Oct. 17, Oct. 24 Octavya L. Feazell, 20, of Bellwood, was arrested in the 200 block of W. North Ave. at 10:27 a.m. Oct. 17 and at 2:28 p.m. Oct. 24 and charged with retail theft.

ADDISON — Lincoln School’s new afterschool math club is such a success this year that they had to open a waiting list for those students who hope to have a chance to participate. Second grade teacher Elizabeth Daily sponsors the Crazy 8’s Math Club, which includes 12 students in grades 3-5 meeting on Tuesdays and 12 in grade K-2 on Wednesday afternoons.

The Crazy 8’s Math Club is the creation of Laura Bilodeau Overdeck, the founder of Bedtime Math, an organization whose mission is “to help kids love numbers so they can handle the math in real life.” The club has students participating in fun activities like building glow-in-the-dark structures, cracking secret spy codes and playing games like Toilet Paper Olympics-- high-octane math activities that are geared to appeal to a wide range of kids.

“Every week after Crazy 8s, students leave excited for what they’ll be doing the next week,” Daily said, asked about the students’ reaction. “They love that they get to take home materials to share with their families. Students have even stopped me in the hallway to tell me they can’t wait for Crazy 8s Club.”

Daily said Glowstick Geometry has been the club’s favorite lesson thus far (see photo).

Each year the Addison School District 4 Board of Education allocates $6000 to be used to help fund afterschool clubs proposed by teachers. A record number of applications were submitted this year and, at a recent meeting, the Board approved the expenditure of $18,300 to fund these extracurricular programs. Fourteen of the 31 clubs approved this year are offered to middle school students at Indian Trail Junior High. One club offers district-wide participation and the remaining 16 clubs/activities are available to grades K-5.

• As a dog lover myself, there’s usually a special bond between dog and owner. That said, is it really necessary to have Fido sitting in your lap while you’re behind the wheel?

• I can’t decide which sight is more disturbing: Older women who wear Love Pink attire or 65-year-old men with long hair in a ponytail.

• As Millennials make their way into the work force over the next several years, I’m convinced all the economy will need in order to function are fitness centers, hookah bars, Panera Bread and Whole Foods outlets, video game, smartphone, skateboard and overthe-knee shorts manufacturers (since I’ve seen youths—and some middle-aged men, for that matter—wearing shorts in 30-degree weather), coffee shops, smartphone dealerships and movie theaters.

• I kind of miss seeing someone standing outside a Liberty Tax Service office trying to drum up business, dressed as the Statue of Liberty.

• I can’t be the only person in the suburbs who’s frustrated that more and more first-run theaters are opting for reserved seating. So much for going to a movie at the last minute and sitting wherever there’s an available seat.

• Watching the last 10 minutes of The Bachelor, to me, is quite amusing. I tune in to find out which women he’s dumped, and then watch these women fall apart as if they’ve dated him for a year.

• Speaking of reality TV, whatever happened to Honey Boo-Boo since her show got cancelled? If she’s looking for a new gig, ABC-TV should consider bringing her on The View as a co-host. Honey BooBoo can’t be any worse than Joy Behar.

• You know things are getting bad with the budget impasse

in Springfield when the state has to delay payouts to lottery winners who’ve won more than $600.

• The next time a stranger hands me his or her smartphone and asks me to take a pic of them and/or their friends, I’ll take the pic, ask for their email address and send them

an invoice for photography services rendered.

• Shakespeare’s opening line from his poem, “All the world’s a stage” needs to be amended.

In 2015, it’s “all the world’s a photo-op.”

• I’ve concluded that I need to buy a rolodex for the dozens of computer and smartphone-

related passwords I can’t ever remember.

• It doesn’t take much to make me happy. Just keep those Dos Equis “Most Interesting Man in the World” commercials coming.

houghts, musings, peeves, observations and what have you as I try to recall how many times I’ve been a victim of microaggression …

• Is it just me, or am I the only one who’s noticed that Marie Osmond is always the spokesperson for any infomercial that happens to promote a meals program to lose weight?

• Here we go again. That annoying 24/7 Holiday Lite station (or whatever they call it nowadays) is back on the airwaves, playing Last Christmas, Jingle Bell Rock, (Simply Having a) Wonderful Christmastime and Merry Christmas Darling, ad nauseam for the next few weeks. Speaking of micro-aggression, I think my eardrums are already a victim of micro-aggression. Is there any way to get the FCC to ban this station?

• I’m all for keeping physically fit, yet I’ll never understand those who jog around their neighborhoods pushing their kids in one of those jogging strollers. Or those who force their dogs to jog with them. And recently, I witnessed a first: a woman jogger who was pushing her kid in a stroller AND having the dog run with her. Talk about multi-tasking.

Sheesh!

• Coinciding with the above item, just when you think you’ve seen everything, the other day in Elmhurst I spotted what appeared to be a teen-ager riding his bike with the family dog on a leash as the poor dog trots in order to keep up with the teen. Whatever happened to taking the dog for a walk?

• Fantasy football, of course, is big business nowadays, but I immediately change the station when sports talk radio programs devote entire segments to fantasy participants calling the station and asking which player, or players, they should put in their lineup.

• What’s with those bathtubs in the Cialis® commercials?

On second thought, I really don’t want to know.

• Don’t you just love standing in line at the 7-Eleven with five people in front of you as the person at the cash register takes forever to purchase 10 different lottery tickets?

• Why is Italian Wedding soup called Italian Wedding soup? I’ve never had this soup at a wedding, Italian or otherwise.

Latino food fest raises $1,800 for scholarships

n Nov. 7, the halls of Addison Trail were transformed into a carnival, filled with vibrant decorations, the sounds of traditional Latino music and the inviting aroma of authentic cuisine.

It was the school’s second annual “Kermes,” a Latino food festival hosted by the Interact Club and Padres Latinos en Acción group.

Nearly 400 people attended the festival, which raised about $1,800 for student scholarships. Along with the traditional Latino dishes and food, attendees enjoyed a disc jockey, silent auction, face painting, pumpkin decorating and more. Addison Mayor Rich Veenstra and his wife Mary Ann were among the guests.

ADDISON — Carole Lago, graduate of Addison Trail High School, showcased her “Flos-saicTM” art and described her career journey to members of the Women’s Club of Addison at their November meeting. Each of her art pieces is composed of patterns of cut glass that reflect light in changing compositions of color and form. They include serving trays, trivets, jeweled boxes as well as framed works and jewelry.

Also at their November meeting, members of the Women’s Club of Addison brought donations of sheets and towels to be given to Lutherbrook Children and Family Services of Addison.

Brent Deers, Executive Director, thanked the members for their donations that evening and for past grants to Lutherbrook and described the impact of these contributions to their mission.

Addison Trail girls basketball team has high hopes

Addison Trail girls basketball coach Rob Schader has a roster of 12 this season.

And he’s not afraid to put any of them into game situations.

“We legitimately have 11 or 12 kids that will play on a given night,” he said.

“We have a four-post rotation and we’ll rotate in the other eight guards. It’s nice to have that kind of depth. I feel comfortable playing all those girls right away.”

Back for the Blazers from last year’s team are seniors Maria Koulogeorgas (guard), Nicole Pudlo (guard), Tegan Graff (post), Ksymena Kwasnik (guard) and Marina Stokes (guard). Senior Symone Jones-Tate (post) is back with

the team after not playing last year.

Newcomers include juniors Alyssa Pham (guard), Diana Graciano (post), Jasmin Mehmeti (post), Diamond Pikulyk (post), Marie Baumgartner (guard) and sophomore Nicolette Scorza (guard).

“We’re going to push the tempo and mix things up defensively,” said Schader.

“We’re extremely tall this season. It’s the tallest we have been.”

Schader compares this group to one of his past team’s (that included standout Jasmine Little) that won 16 games.

“We have more talent than that team and we’re even bigger,” he said. “We should be able to rebound the ball better this year. We don’t have anybody that is 6-foot, but we have girls who are 5-8, 5-9 and 5-10 and they are quick and can get to balls. A girls like Jasmin (Mehmeti)

is quick and can get to those rebounds and Diana works so hard and is physical. Nicole Pudlo, who hurt her knee two years ago, is back on the wing and she’s tall at 5-8. Nicci Scorza is like Gumby out there. It seems like her arms go forever and she’s always getting her hands on everything. She’s good at closing out on the wing.”

Schader likes the junior-senior mix of this group. “It’s a good mix of juniors and seniors and one sophomore,” he said. “The juniors did really well as sophomores last year. They beat Downers Grove South, Willowbrook and Hinsdale South twice.

They played well. We’ll see if it transfers. We’re going to be able to do a lot of things with this group because we can play so many girls. We have kids who can score and they’ve bought into what we are

doing defensively. I think we’re going to be able to shut some teams down.”

Schader said there will be no easy games in the West Suburban Conference Gold Division this season.

“Proviso East is always good and Morton will be very solid. Their sophomores won every game last year,” he said.

“Everybody is tough in the conference.

Our conference is tough in basketball in general. Every night will be a challenge, but I expect us to compete and win games. We are going to be very competitive this year.”

Addison Trail opened play earlier this week in its tournament it co-hosts with Fenton. Addison Trail has games scheduled in the tournament with Lane Tech, Fenton, Elgin and Leyden.

Fenton girls basketball team ready for 2015-2016 season

The Fenton girls basketball team may be short on varsity experience, but veteran coach Tim Anderson is not panicking.

“One of the things you look at is returning varsity experience,”

he said. “We just do not have a lot of it. That will be one of the factors in how we get started. But as the season goes on the other kids on the team will start gaining experience and will improve.

It’s an obstacle right now. There is no substitute for experience.

You have to earn it. Our girls are

working hard.”

Fenton returns seniors Jessica Bango and Courtney Susmarski, along with junior Krysta Wilson and sophomore Jamie Minard.

Morrone was sixth in the breaststroke with a time of 1:09.47. AT-Willowbrook placed seventh in the 400 relay with a time of 3:50.74. That team included Johnston, Obrzut, Ramirez and Koterba.

Fenton girls swimming Fenton junior Cassidy Feddersen qualified for this weekend’s state finals in diving out of the Downers Grove North sectional.

Feddersen finished with 339.30 points.

Fenton took 10th as a team in the sectional.

Fenton’s 200 medley relay was 10th. That team featured Kanah Hori, Lexi Petrella, Feddersen and Jasmin Kon. Agnes Gasior was 21st in the 200, while Justine Petrow was 23rd. Petrella was 21st in the 200 IM, while Emily Jarecki was 22nd.

Hori placed 15th in the 50 free, while Feddersen was 17th.

Emma Butts was 13th in diving.

Alexandra Zimbrakos was 18th in the butterfly. Jarecki was 20th in the butterfly.

Hori was 15th in the 100, while Kon was 23rd. Gasior was 22nd in the 500, while Petrow was 24th. Fenton’s 200 free relay was 10th with Feddersen, Gasior, Petrella and Hori.

Zimbrakos was 22nd in the backstroke, while Butts was 23rd. Petrella was 19th in the breaststroke, while Kon was 22nd. Fenton’s 400 relay team was 11th with Butts, Kon, Petrow and Gasior swimming in that event.

AT-Willowbrook’s Haake qualifies for state swimming in three events

Addison Trail-Willowbrook girls swimming freshman Elissa Haake made quite a debut at the recent Downers Grove North sectional.

Haake qualified for this week’s state meet in three different events. She helped AT-Willowbrook finish sixth as a team in the sectional with 124.5 points.

Haake finished third in the 50 and qualified for state with a time of 24.46. She also took third in the 100 and earned a state berth with a time of 3:53.16.

Haake also was part of the AT-Willowbrook 200 relay team that took second and qualified for state with a time of 1:38.27.

That team also included junior Annalise Morrone, senior Melissa Johnnston and senior Meghan Koterba.

In the 200 medley relay, ATWillowbrook took sixth with a time of 1:52.22. That team featured freshman Anna Christiansen, Morrone, Johnston and Haake.

“We had 12 years of returning varsity experience last year, which is a fair amount,” said Anderson. “We don’t have that this year and that’s what we are dealing with.”

Anderson noted those players with experience will have even larger roles this season. “The kids who have that experience will be the provider of valuable leadership,” he said. “The younger kids will pick up on that. We do have some outstanding leaders. Our two seniors, Jessica and Courtney, are excellent. You want them to be the model of showing this is what it’s like being on varsity. These two are something special. They are doing just that. I couldn’t ask for more from them.

They are going to have to carry the load at the beginning of the season as the others amass experience.”

Anderson said he’s at a big advantage because of the group of girls he has this season. “It’s a great group of girls that works hard,” he said. “As the season goes on we’re going to keep getting better. I think they are up to the challenge. We have a list up on the wall of things you have to have and team chemistry is something you have to have. The chemistry we have right now is good. We know we have some tough parts of our schedule and that’s when you need that chemistry the most.”

Anderson added the team’s character showed during last year’s 7-22 campaign. “If you look at our record, OK it wasn’t

that great,” he said. “It still was an absolutely satisfying season.

They stuck with us the entire season and to me that’s another important way of measuring success. Not everybody can win every game, but everybody can stick together.”

The rest of the team includes Jenny Sanchez (junior guard), Julia DeGuia (junior guard), Danielle Shawaluk (junior guard), Patty Acosta (junior guard), Jezalyn Tapia (freshman guard), Ashley Lira (freshman guard), Jessica McCauley (sophomore post), Erika Vega (junior post) and Giselle Gomez (junior post).

Anderson knows his team will be challenged in the Metro Suburban Conference West Division.

“We found out last year the new conference is tough,” he said.

“Our division was outstanding with a lot of outstanding teams and outstanding players. It’s still going to be extremely competitive.”

Fenton is again co-hosting a tournament with Addison Trail to kick off the season. “What I like about this tournament is it’s perfect for us,” he said. “We play with four teams where in any year, anybody can win this thing.

There’s a lot of balance and that will help get us ready to go into our challenging conference. You can tell the girls about that but they have to get out there and experience it. We’re doing our best to prepare them for that.”

Fenton plays Leyden in the tournament at home at 7:15 p.m.

Thursday and hosts Addison Trail Saturday at home at 6:15 p.m.

These natives called the lake Tyranena, and an old legend claims that a giant serpent protects the sacred stone pyramids.
