Suspect was on parole, pre-trial release denied

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin, Addison Deputy Chief of Police Roy Selvik and FBI Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago Field Office Robert “Wes” Wheeler have announced that Judge Michael Fleming granted the state’s motion to deny pre-trial release for one of several individuals suspected of robbing at gunpoint two BMO Harris branch offices located in DuPage County.

Kenneth Eggleston, 30, appeared at First Appearance Court and was charged with two counts of armed violence (Class X felony), two counts of armed robbery with a firearm, (Class X felony), one count of attempt armed robbery with a firearm (Class 1 felony), two counts of financial institution robbery (Class 1 felony), two counts of possession of a stolen motor vehicle (Class 2 felony), one count of possession of a firearm by a felon (Class 2 felony) and four counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon (Class 3 felony).

It is alleged that on July 19 at approximately 9:30 a.m., two armed, masked men entered the BMO Harris Bank located at 320 W. Diehl Road in Naperville. It is further alleged that once inside the bank, the men ordered the customers and employees to the floor, took two bank employees at gunpoint to the vault and ordered them to open it.

It is alleged the men then took approximately $95,716 from the vault and put it in a bag that they

had brought with them. It is further alleged the men then exited the bank and fled the scene in a car that was reported stolen out of Chicago on July 9. It is furKenneth ther alleged that Eggleston two days later, on July 21 at approximately 9:08 a.m., two armed and masked individuals entered the BMO Harris Bank located in the 1300 block of W. Lake Street in Addison.

It is alleged that once inside the bank, the defendants ordered the employees and customers to the floor.

It is further alleged that one of the defendants jumped over the counter and ordered the tellers to open the drawers and put cash into a garbage bag. It is further alleged that once the drawers were emptied, one of the defendants ordered employees to the back vault at gunpoint and demanded they put more cash into the bag, it is further alleged that the duo then fled the area with approximately $172,152.

It is alleged that approximately one week later, on July 28 at approximately 9:53 a.m., two masked and armed men approached the entrance of the BMO Harris Bank located in the 2400 block of 75th Street in Wo-

Lawmakers decline to extend private school scholarship tax credit program Veto session adjourns without renewing Invest in Kids Act

Illinois lawmakers adjourned their fall veto session Nov. 9 without renewing a controversial program that provided indirect state support for students attending private and religious schools.

The Invest in Kids program will sunset as scheduled on Dec. 31, meaning donors to six state-approved private school scholarship funds will no longer be able to claim a 75 percent tax credit for their donations. The program has been capped at $75 million annually since its implementation in 2018.

Advocates for the program say without the tax incentives, the scholarship

organizations won’t be able to raise the money they have in recent years, and an estimated 9,600 students who currently receive those scholarships may have to find another way to pay for their education or transfer to their local public school.

Lawmakers passed the Invest in Kids Act in 2017 as part of a bipartisan package that also included an overhaul of the way Illinois funds public preK-12 education. The scholarship program was considered necessary in order to get then-Gov. Bruce Rauner, a Republican, to sign the public school funding overhaul.

Supporters of the program argued that it gave children from lower-in-

come backgrounds the ability to attend schools that would otherwise be available only to wealthier families.

But opponents, including teachers’ unions and other advocates for public education, argued that the tax credits siphoned money out of state coffers that could have been used to support public schools.

Last month, state Rep. Angelica Guerrero-Cuellar, D-Chicago, introduced House Bill 4194, which would have renewed a scaled-back version of the program. But that bill was never called for a vote.

One question that remained unanswered about the program is whether students who received private school

scholarships performed any better academically than their peers who went to public schools.

The 2017 law required students receiving the scholarships to take the same standardized tests that public school students take each year, and it called on the Illinois State Board of Education to publish an analysis of that data.

But ISBE has not yet published that analysis. Officials at the agency said they were unable to collect reliable data during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021. An analysis using 2022 and 2023 test results is scheduled for release later this year or early in 2024.

Throughout the veto session, dozens of supporters of the program converged on the Statehouse wearing blue t-shirts and waving signs that read, “Protect our scholarships.”

House Republican leader Tony McCombie, of Savanna, told reporters Nov. 9 that she believes the program still has bipartisan support, and she said its backers will continue working to have it reinstated.

“It certainly will continue to be a priority of the caucus, and it certainly will be a priority of several of the Democrats in the House as well as, I believe, in the Senate,” she said. “I don’t think it’s going to be something that they’re going to want to just stop.”

25th annual Shop With a Cop takes place Dec. 2

This year marks the 25th anniversary of Lombard’s Shop With a Cop program.

The purpose of Shop with a Cop is to help bring Christmas gifts and joy to less fortunate children and their families who live in the community, while fostering positive relationships with law enforcement.

Lombard police officers pick up the children from their homes and bring them to Lombard Village Hall, where they are escorted in a convoy of squad cars to go Christmas shopping at Dick’s Sporting Goods and Yorktown Target store.

The children go shopping for gifts for their parents and family, with help from Lombard police officers, while other volunteers pick out gifts for the children.

Members of the Lombard Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association help wrap the gifts and host a lunch.

At the end of the event, the children are driven home in squad cars filled with gifts, cookies and gift baskets. This event is made possible by fundraising efforts of the Lombard Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association, Lombard FOP #270, and donations from local businesses and individuals. To date, the program has served and helped over 250 families.

Anyone wishing to make a donation to this year’s Shop With A Cop can do so by dropping the donation off at the Lombard police station, or mailing it to the Lombard Police Department at 235 E. Wilson Ave., Lombard, IL, 60148.

“Violent gun crimes, as alleged in this case, will not be tolerated in DuPage County and will be met with the full force and effect of the law,” Berlin said. “We are all very grateful that no employees or customers at the banks were physically harmed during these alleged robberies. The apprehension of the first of several individuals who allegedly committed these crimes sends the message that we will

use all tools available to us, including assistance from the federal government and air support if necessary to hold accountable anyone suspected of this type of behavior.

“I thank the Addison Police Department for their efforts in this case as well as the Naperville, Woodridge and Chicago police departments for their work as well.”

“This was a tremendous and lengthy investigation involving several agencies and our partners at the FBI,” Selvik said.

Eggleston’s next court appearance was scheduled Nov. 13 for arraignment in front of Judge Margaret O’Connell.

Slices of life

Part 2: If trees could talk, surviving a great fire In part one, Tree grew tall and firm in the forest in the mid-1800s, only to be felled by a human and cut into boards used to build a house. While most would see boards and call them such, Tree continued to see itself as a tree, because one never travels far from ones roots.

Whereas bunnies, squirrels and deer used to encompass Tree’s days, now interests included humans called Dad, Mom and a very small seedling referred to as Mary. Tree watched little Mary grow taller. And soon another little tree-human named Mikey was added to the mix.

Tree was fond of these beings and took pride in keeping them safe from heat and cold and rain and snow. Tree loved the laughter in the house and found it hard to remember the days when rabbits and squirrels were the height of its existence.

This all happened around 1910 to 1918. Life was good during those years. And then came The Fire.

Tree didn’t know much about the fire until it was right upon them.

The early evening went from windy and dry to fiery and dangerous. Tree didn’t even consider its own wellbeing. It was concerned about the humans, especially Mary and Mikey.

But there wasn’t much it could do, being a tree and all.

Dad doused the roof and perimeter of the house with water before leaving with the rest of the humans.

Tree understood Dad wanted to protect its walls and was glad. Then all Tree could do was wait.

It was a scary time. The minutes ticked by. Then hours. The wind whipped this way and that and the great fire reciprocated. Tree watched as neighboring houses succumbed to the blaze, lighting up the night sky.

Tree was sad.

Tree had lost neighbors and family.

What had been such a happy time became sorrowful. Devastating, even.

The days ticked by slowly. The fires dissipated and finally became smoldering piles of lost dreams.

Tree was despondent.

And then, there was movement on the street outside—familiar movement. It was the humans called Dad and Mom and best of all they had with them Mary and Mikey.

It was the first time, and perhaps the only time, tree wished it had a voice. It would have called out to its humans - to welcome them back. To say thank you for the water, which had undoubtedly saved its wooden being from being taken by the fire.

Instead, tree stayed silent, and gave thanks for the humans who loved him (and who Tree loved in return.)

Mary and Mikey grew to be teenagers (a hilarious yet trying time for Tree). They moved out of the house. Shortly after, Dad and Mom left and another set of humans (Tree had learned they are called family) inhabited the house. They had little humans of their own, and tree grew to love them nearly as much and maybe even more than Mary and Mikey.

This happened over and over.

Humans replaced humans. Tree was amazed and saddened at the brevity of human life. One just gets to know the humans inhabiting itself and they up and leave or, worse yet, die.

Tree witnessed three humans die and felt immense sadness when this happened, while understanding this was how it is supposed to be. Death here on earth is only a rebirth of some sort, much like Tree’s rebirth and metamorphosis from branches to boards.

Tree has cultivated the ability to sense when a human death is near and has come to realize that death is not ugly, but beautiful. The humans witnessing the death don’t typically see this, so Tree employs a tactic it has come to know as “pray” to connect with its roots and the humans in proximity. Tree prays for the humans to see the unfolding of the universe’s grand plans—including the beauty of death and a celebration of a life well-lived.

If trees could talk, the tree at 758 Lilac St. could recite volumes. But that’s not how it’s supposed to be.

Trees don’t talk.

But they can stand near. They can shelter. They can witness. They can love.

And they do.

They see comings and goings.

They see life and death. They see the world at its best and its worst.

They can grow toward the clouds or they can be cut to their quick.

Through it all they stand by us and support us, albeit silently.

As Tree at 758 Lilac has done—for generations—and will continue to do.

As Tree only hopes.

Transforming pretrial justice for people, systems and communities Editor’s note: The opinions expressed in this op-ed are those of the author.

By Alison Shames The week of Oct. 22-Oct. 28 marked the first 30 days of the Pretrial Fairness Act, which is transforming pretrial justice in Illinois.

When the law was enacted one month ago, it made history by eliminating money bonds. Instead of the arbitrary practice of wealth-based detention, Illinois put in place sensible legal standards for intentional pretrial release and detention decisions based on the law and evidence.

Plenty of work still lies ahead, but we should acknowledge those whose efforts during the past two years helped ensure that the implementation of the law would positively impact people, systems, and communities.

More than 100 people throughout the state participated in the Pretrial Implementation Task Force. They represented law enforcement, courts, state’s attorneys, public defenders, pretrial services, victims’/ survivors’ rights advocates, and other community and justice system stakeholder groups—and dedicated countless hours to lay the groundwork for the law’s success.

While the state’s elimination of financial release conditions has generated the most attention, the Pretrial Fairness Act upended decades of questionable practices and operations. But what is remarkable about the law —especially regarding its potential impact nationwide—is that it reconnected pretrial practices with foundational American legal principles.

More than 30 years ago, the U.S. Supreme Court was unequivocal in declaring that “In our society, liberty is the norm, and detention prior to trial or without trial is the carefully limited exception.”

But this explicit statement was overlooked during decades of

outdated practices, including the default setting of financial conditions of release (commonly referred to as “money bond”), which led to pretrial decisions that were neither careful nor limited.

These practices undermined the presumption of innocence. Instead, financial conditions resulted in the detention of people without access to money—and the release of others, even if they posed a danger to community safety or of willful flight from prosecution.

By abandoning the arbitrary use of financial conditions, Illinois has adopted a commonsense legal framework that honors and operates consistently with the presumption of innocence and liberty.

In this respect, while remarkable, the Pretrial Fairness Act isn’t groundbreaking. It follows other states and jurisdictions that have moved away from financial conditions of release and toward reasoned, evidence-based, and legally justified decisions about who should be detained, who should be released, and under what conditions.

With the new law, Illinois joins New Jersey, New Mexico, and the District of Columbia in requiring substantive hearings to determine who should be detained and ensures that courts are taking the time necessary for decision makers to review each case and its circumstances properly.

Where these reforms have been implemented, data and research show that they are working: The majority of people attend their court hearings and remain arrest-free.

The Pretrial Fairness Act’s accomplishments go beyond its alignment with foundational pretrial legal principles. The new law requires a comprehensive collection of relevant data to be analyzed and shared with justice system professionals and the public. Reliable data is essential for reviewing pretrial

outcomes and measuring how a system performs as a whole; it will also contribute to more constructive and evidence-based discussions about the impacts the new law has on people, communities, and the court system.

Because the new law is complex and comprehensive, it required counties to do something that many justice systems don’t naturally do: work together across disciplines and functions. System stakeholders and community members collaborated in a well-structured process that helped them identify and better understand the changes they needed to make to their pretrial practices. This requires removing the traditional barriers in the criminal legal system that can divide system stakeholders from the community members they serve.

These collaborations should continue and include representatives from all agencies with pretrial responsibilities and directly impacted people, victims and survivors, and their families.

The people working in the state’s criminal legal systems—judges, state’s attorneys, defense counsel, law enforcement, court clerks, pretrial services officers, and many others—deserve recognition for their extraordinary efforts to uphold the letter as well as the spirit of the new law.

Change is never easy. But the Pretrial Fairness Act puts Illinois on the path to upholding foundational legal principles and the integrity of its system of justice. This important undertaking is off to a positive start.

A local church has two parking lots. And on Sunday, one parking lot is completely empty; all the parishioners park at the nearby curb. You have a hard time going south on one street because of the cars parking in the street. You have parking lots, so use them. Also, to the man who gave me the finger on Sunday morning, I’m sure your parents would be very proud of you doing something like that to a 95-year-old grandma. Bye. *** I agree with the caller about raking leaves and other yard waste into the street. I recently saw it in several places around my neighborhood; I even saw a guy in the act. I have a family member who lives in a town where they do rake leaves into the street and a truck comes along and vacuums up the leaves. However, he said the leaves often blow back into the yard when it’s windy, creating more work, and they clog the drains.

I have already done my share of raking up leaves from all over the block.

Please show some consideration for your neighbors and bag them up. *** I agree with the senior citizen’s comment about digital coupons in the Nov. 2 edition of Speak Out. Can’t stores just put items on sale without forcing us to download apps, sign in and “clip” digital coupons? It’s not convenient at all.

And it’s great that one of our area churches is offering free workshops about using smartphones, but a lot of senior citizens don’t want to be forced to use smartphones just to save a few dollars at the store. *** I just finished reading Speak Out

for this past issue and can’t understand how anyone can vote Republican anymore with all of the lying, cheating and illegal activity going on in the Republican Party. We are now down to just one realistic party to vote for. It’s a very sad situation for the United States. *** Black Lives Matter is a far-left outfit that has taken in millions of dollars from corporate America.

Where has all of that money gone? *** I agree with the caller about “digital” coupons and store deals.

I have only so much room on my phone, and apps take up space. I liked when grocery store chains had a “loyalty card” that was scanned, like the one I use at the gas station, to get deals. There has to be a happy medium for people who either don’t have a smartphone or can’t/don’t want to use up megabytes with apps. But I guess using those apps lets a business track our buying habits, and can further target us with ads. *** Did you see the story about a judge ordering a new primary mayoral election in Bridgeport, Connecticut? The incumbent mayor won a Democrat primary by 251 votes, but a judge ruled that two women made, or were directly involved in, 15 incidents of drop boxes being stuffed with ballots.

Amazing. I thought our elections were safe and secure. I’m sure the media will tell us this was an isolated incident. By the way, have you also seen the story about an election fraud case in New Jersey, where a city council president al-

There’s a way to enter the U.S. and apply for status without breaking our laws or disappearing into our land. Migrants are given medical treatment, food, shelter and in some cases an education at taxpayers’ expense. What about America’s poor homeless and some vets? *** As for the end of the grants to allow school choice, it is my understanding that while the money itself does not come from the state, it is the loss of revenue because of tax credits to donors that hurts the state. I think all kids deserve the chance to get a good education, no matter where they live, although there is also the issue of separation of church and state. Maybe there should be a lottery so that any child living in a targeted area could have that same opportunity.

Or better yet, how about using that money to fix the school systems that are failing our children? I read that in Texas, seniors 65 and over get a “freeze” on taxes paid to the school district(s). That is a great idea for those of us on a fixed income. I know we all “benefit” for educating the future generation, but I have paid into the schools for 40

years and the school taxes make up at least 70 percent of my tax bill.

And how much of that goes into the classroom, or to the exorbitant salaries the top-heavy administrators make? And don’t forget their pensions. *** Oh boy another union debacle.

The president of the school teachers union is living in Indiana. I guess Chicago is not good enough.

Pritzker gave them a pay raise in January, and they voted themselves another pay raise in June. Now they’re each getting almost $90,000 a year. What are we, the taxpayers who pay their salaries, getting for that? Not much, if you ask me. Apparently, these hard-working lawmakers didn’t have time during the fall veto session to call proposals to the floor to extend the Invest in Kids scholarship program. That program benefits low-income students, and will now expire at the end of the year.

I bet these lawmakers would have found time during the veto session if a deadline for legislation pertaining to cannabis, casinos, gun restrictions or those sacred abortion rights were staring them in the face.

Retro Glow Cycles to host Prairie Path Pop-up Nov. 25 Owners want to show support for other local businesses

Brian Kalbfleisch says he is grateful to the local community and businesses for the support they’ve shown after a fire forced his new business to close.

And now, he wants to return that support.

That is why he is hosting a Prairie Path Pop-up small-business event on Saturday, Nov. 25, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at his place of business, Retro Glow Cycles, 307 S. Main St., Lombard.

As Kalbfleisch tells it, Retro Glow Cycles “first did a soft opening in August 2022, then we had a grand opening in October.”

However, “Two weeks later, a customer’s e-bike battery blew up and burned out the inside of the store,” he recounted.

Although it was a brand new business for him and his wife Amy (Minster), bicycling was in his blood, Kalbfleisch continued, and apparently in his wife’s as well.

“My wife’s grandpa had a bike shop in the 1950s and 1960s,” called Jack’s Bicycle Shop, he said. It was first located on St. Charles Road, near where Billy Bricks Wood Fired Pizza is located today.

Later, the shop moved to the northeast corner of St. Charles Road and Main Street, he continued, after which it closed in the mid- to late1960s, according to family history.

Two of Jack Minster’s bicycles are on display with the Lombard Historical Society, he noted.

As for getting into the bicycle business himself, Kalbfleisch explained, “I was a software engineer for over 30 years,” and as an avid bicyclist, “I started fixing bikes in my garage” during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Word got around and “One day there was a line of kids wanting me to fix their bikes,” he said with a chuckle, adding, “It kind of lit the spark. I really enjoy doing it.”

Saying that repairing bikes became “kind of my passion,” Kalbfleisch decided to change careers and get into the bicycle repair business, during which time “I learned about the cool bikes my grandfather-in-law [had been] working on … that were in various states of disrepair.”

Kalbfleisch also studied to become a certified bicycle repair technician, because, he quipped, “I didn’t just want to be a YouTube hero.”

He and Amy decided, then, “We’re going to open up [a bike shop] in Lombard and see what happens.”

The fire at his shop did not deter Kalbfleisch from being visible in the community. He worked out of his Lombard garage, and had a booth at the farmer’s market in Lombard over the summer, where he sold accesso-

BOBBIE ROESKE Long-time Lombard resident Bobbie Roeske died Monday, November 6th, 2023, in her home of 55 years after a valiant battle with ALS. She was an active gardener and member of the Lombard Garden Club, enjoyed traveling, and her passion, Dachshunds. She could frequently be seen around the neighborhood walking her beloved dogs Milo & Pebbles, or foster dogs.

She received a BA in Education from Elmhurst University and an MS in Education Leadership from Northern Illinois University. She was a teacher for over 33 years; 25 years of those were spent at Glen Crest Middle School in Glen Ellyn.

She is preceded in death by her husband Rodman Roeske, survived by her daughters Holly Roeske and Dana Roeske (Paul Mateja); and her brother, Steve Szymanski of Glen Ellyn.

After her retirement, she was representative and foster mom for Midwest Dachshund Rescue. Over the years she fostered and helped to place many dogs in their forever homes.

PATRICIA POSKOCIL Patricia (Pat) Stange Poskocil, a beloved wife, devoted mother, cherished grandmother, loving sister, successful business executive, curious world traveler, passionate philanthropist, and esteemed academic, passed away on Wednesday November 8, 2023.

Born on November 30, 1935 to the late Raymond and Cecelia (En-

gelbrecht) Stange, in Henry, Illinois, she leaves behind a legacy of love, determination, and impactful contributions.

Pat was a shining example of academic excellence from an early age. She earned the prestigious title of valedictorian at Henry High School, serving as a testament to her dedication and intellectual prowess. She continued to pursue her passion for education, obtaining a bachelor’s degree in education from Illinois State University, a bachelor’s degree in business from Elmhurst College, and an MBA from Northwestern Kellogg University, where she graduated with honors.

Beyond her academic achievements, Pat was deeply committed to giving back to her community.

She was appointed as a commissioner of the Lombard Historic Preservation Commission in 1972 and served until her death. During her tenure she served as Chairman for several years. She was a driving force behind the founding of the Lombard Historical Society in 1970 and the establishment of two museums in Lombard—the Victorian Cottage and the Sheldon Peck Homestead.

The Victorian Cottage illustrates life at the turn of the century. The Sheldon Peck Homestead is a verified stop on the Underground Railroad and was accepted into the National Park Service’s Network to Freedom. Sheldon Peck was an abolitionist and an itinerant folk artist. Pat was also on the committee responsible for creating “Footsteps on the Tall Grass Prairie,” Lombard’s historical account published in 1976.

She, along with her husband Frank, dedicated numerous volunteer hours to tape memories of Lombard’s longtime residents and the descendants of its settlers.

In 2017 Pat received the William J. Mueller Lombard Heritage Award. In 2018 Pat was awarded the Lifetime Volunteer Award of Distinction by the Illinois Association of Museums for service to the Lombard Historical Society, the Lombard Historic Preservation Commission and the Sheldon Peck Homestead. LHPC Chair Rita Schneider stated “Without Pat’s energy and dedication, we would not have the Peck Homestead. Her focus on its importance in Lombard’s history was unending.”

Pat was also actively involved in the American Association of University Women (AAUW), where she found great joy in empowering women and promoting education.

Additionally, she was active in the Lombard Garden Club and the Philanthropic Educational Organization (P.E.O.).

Her dedication to these causes earned her the title of Woman of the Year in Lombard, Illinois, a well-deserved recognition for her outstanding contributions.

In line with her passion for academics, Pat began her career as a

grade school teacher specializing in Art Education. Later she transitioned to the business world with various roles in sales education and training. Pat traveled the world as a sales executive of AT&T and Lucent Technologies.

Post retirement, Pat and Frank moved to Beacon Hill where they enjoyed living amongst many of their lifelong Lombard friends as well as kindling new friendships.

Pat touched the lives of many with her quest for inclusiveness and infectious enthusiasm. She was preceded in death by her husband Frank Poskocil. She is survived by her daughters, Cynthia Bonura (Ken Olinsky) and Julia Lohrmann (John), and her granddaughter, Angela Bonura.

She is also survived by her siblings Rita Simpkins (the late Lewis), Margi Koors, Sharon Bumgardner, and Raymond Stange (Debbie).

She was preceded in death by her sisters Jean Davis (Earl) and Jan Simpkins (Tom).

Pat Poskocil’s impact and influence extended far beyond the achievements she accomplished.

She will be remembered as a remarkable woman who dedicated her life to education, community service, and making a positive difference in the lives of others.

In celebration of Patricia’s life, a visitation and memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 25, at 10 a.m. at St. John XXIII Church (formerly St. Mary Catholic Church) in Henry, Illinois, as well as a celebration of life on Monday, November 27, at noon at Beacon Hill in Lombard Illinois.

Ralph was born in Elmhurst, July 24th, 1930, to August and Emma Schweppe. At an early age he began working in the family Tavern Supply business in Elmhurst. 1950 the business moved to St. Charles Road in Lombard.

While working for his dad, he met the love of his life, Elaine.

Ralph enlisted, 1952, in the Army Reserves at Ft. Sheridan, IL. Ralph and Elaine then married and were immediately stationed in El Paso, Texas, where he proudly served his country there until 1954.

Ralph and Elaine moved back to Lombard and started their family in 1955. They had three children: Jeffrey, Randy, and Julie. Ralph’s career in the family business continued and he eventually became the owner of Schweppe & Sons Food Service Equipment and Supplies on North Ave. in Lombard. Ralph carried his business character with dignity, honesty and high ethical standards. He was highly respected by his peers, his business associates, and customers.

Ralph also worked an active role as a Volunteer fireman for the Lombard firefighters where he was named Assistant Fire Chief in the late 1960s.

Ralph was an active member of the Lombard Rotary Club and the Elmhurst Memorial Hospital Governors Board.

Ralph and his family were longtime members of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Lombard.

loved his family. His life was centered around loving his dear wife, Elaine. They had many friends and a fulfilling social life. He loved his neighborhood on South Craig Place in Lombard, and he was a kind and helpful neighbor.

They traveled around the world together, with friends and family, including hosting several trips to Mexico with his children and grandchildren.

Ralph and Elaine enjoyed entertaining their friends and family in their homes in Illinois and Wisconsin. He enjoyed telling stories, playing bridge, fishing and watching the Cubs.

Ralph was the loving father of Jeffrey (Laura) of WI, Randy (Julie) of GA, and Julie (John) Sprague of Carol Stream, IL; proud grandpa of Brian (Steffanie) Schweppe, Brett Sprague, Melissa (Kyle) Vesta, Kelly Sprague, Carly (Mason) Madej, Caylee Schweppe and the late Christopher Derby; great-grandfather of Cassidy, Madison, Kade, Tatum and Coen; Dear brother to Bud (the late Marleah) Schweppe.

A visitation and private interment were held Tuesday, Nov. 14, at Chapel Hill Gardens West, Oak Brook Terrace.

RALPH A. SCHWEPPE Ralph A. Schweppe, a longtime Lombard resident and business owner, died 12:30 p.m.

Ralph died peacefully of natural causes under hospice care at his Lombard Beacon Hill Health Care residence.

He and his late wife Elaine moved to the Beacon Hill residence center in April 2012. Ralph was diagnosed, 2017, with Alzheimer’s/ Dementia and was admitted to the Beacon Hill Alzheimer’s/Health Care facility where he was visited by family, wrapped in love, and gently cared for until the end.

THEODORE ‘TOD’ KICMAL Theodore “Tod” Kicmal of Lombard passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories. His gentle, fun-loving nature endeared him to all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

IHSSCA names Addison Trail’s Vega Assistant Coach of the Year Addison Trail’s Angel Vega has been named as an Assistant Coach of the Year by the Illinois High School Soccer Coaches Association (IHSSCA). One of just 12 assistant coaches in Illinois to win this award, Vega was recognized and honored on Monday, Oct. 16.

Vega has been the assistant varsity coach of the Addison Trail boys soccer team since 2014. During that time, he has helped Addison Trail win three Regional titles (in 2016, 2018 and 2022) and a PepsiCo Showdown tournament championship in 2016.

“Vega continues to influence the growth of soccer in Addison,” said Ryan Dini, AT boys soccer team head coach. “He volunteers with TOPSoccer, organizes the team’s participation in the annual Addison-Medinah Shriners Parade, runs open gyms, coaches summer league teams and gives countless hours to reviewing video on Hudl. when the officer located the vehicle, later determined to be driven by Castro, Castro put his car in reverse and proceeded southbound on Route 83. It is alleged that as the officer pursued, Castro reached speeds of approximately 107 mph in a 45-mph zone and disobeyed three traffic lights.

It is alleged that near 16th Street, Castro completed a U-turn and continued driving northbound on Route 83 reaching speeds of approximately 100 mph in a 35-mph construction zone, at which time the pursuing officer lost sight of the vehicle.

A short time later, the vehicle was located abandoned in a school parking lot. Officers responded to the school parking and at approximately 8:42 p.m., located Castro approximately one block away from the school. He was then taken into custody after a brief struggle with the officers.

Castro’s next court appearance is scheduled July 27 for arraignment in front of Judge Telander.

“Out of nowhere, there was a major gunfight for like 30 seconds,” eyewitness Bartosz Majerczyk told ABC 7 Eyewitness News. “I’d say, 60 plus rounds. You could tell it was two different groups of people shooting at each other.”

Another witness, who said she was at the celebration, told ABC 7 Eyewitness News “everybody started running” when the gunfire erupted.

“There was a man,” she said. “He fell on top of me. He had a gunshot wound to his leg. It was like something you can’t imagine.”

In a statement, Governor JB Pritzker said he is closely monitoring the shooting.

“Gathering for a holiday celebration should be a joyful occasion, not a time when gunfire erupts and families are forced to run for safety,” Gov. Pritzker said. “As I’ve said time and

time again, gun violence is a public health emergency in this country and I remain committed to banning these dangerous weapons and making our state safer for everyone.”

Meadows was described as a “devoted father whose life was tragically taken from us amidst a Juneteenth celebration” on a GoFundMe page set up to provide support to his two young children, RJ and Gabby.

Meadows was “a beacon of love and strength, who fell victim to a devastating crossfire incident that shattered the peace and joy of what should have been a day of celebration.

“Amidst the chaos, Reggie tragically lost his life, leaving an indelible mark of grief on his family and community. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the other victims who were injured, as we mourn the loss of Reggie, a remarkable individual who touched the lives of many.”

Florida man charged with leading police on high-speed chase

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Villa Park Chief of Police Michael Rivas announced that bond has been set for a Florida man accused of leading Omar Castro police on a high-speed chase.

Omar Castro, 22, appeared at a bond hearing where Judge Michael Reidy set bond at $100,000.

Castro is charged with two counts of aggravated fleeing and eluding a police officer (Class 4 felony) and multiple misdemeanor and petty traffic offenses including two counts of aggravated speeding in a construction zone, reckless driving and driving while license suspended, all Class A misdemeanors.

On Friday, Nov.17, from 9:30 a.m. until noon, and Thursday, Nov, 30, from 5-8 p.m. handmade merchandise will be available for purchase at the Sunset Knoll Recreation Center, 820 S. Finley Road, Lombard. There will be quilts for kids and adults, baby bibs, microwave bowls, phone holders, and many other items available for purchase. These fabric products have been made by the quilting club that meets every Friday morning during the year. The Meadowlark Quilt Club constructs quilts and other items to donate to various groups in Lombard and the greater DuPage area. Each year more than 1,000 quilts are provided to the various charities supported by the group. Most of the fabric is donated by people in the community. This is a self-sustaining program in the park district. Additional funds are required to purchase various supplies and to provide timely repairs and maintenance for sewing machines. Proceeds of the sale will enable the club to purchase additional materials.

NIFB kicks off annual Holiday Meal Box Northern Illinois Food Bank kicks off the season of giving with its 24th annual Holiday Meal Box program to ensure all neighbors can enjoy a special holiday meal with their loved ones.

This year, with the support of generous sponsors and volunteers, the Food Bank will be providing 50,000 Holiday Meal Boxes to neighbors facing hunger across 13 counties in suburban and rural Northern Illinois.

Each Holiday Meal Box serves a family of six to eight, and is packed with traditional trimmings for a complete holiday meal including: Stuffing, turkey gravy, whole kernel corn, green beans, dry pinto beans, dry potatoes, white rice, pears in juice, cranberry sauce, hot cocoa, dessert mix, and canned yams.

Neighbors will also receive either a turkey, ham or meatless option— items vary by location. The holiday meals will be distributed in Novem-

ber and December by local food pantries.

“The Food Bank’s mission is about more than food. It’s also about community and connections. Holiday Meal Boxes start with the community,” said Julie Yurko, president, and CEO at Northern Illinois Food Bank. “Our donors help to fund them, and our volunteers help put them together! These food boxes are one of the ways we help neighbors feel connected to their community and celebrate holidays, which can be a precious time with family.”

Rams can’t keep pace with the Ironmen Normal’s Community High School rallies for a 45-28 quarterfinal win in Lombard; Rams finish their season with a 10-2 record

The Glenbard East football team’s 2023 season ended with a 45-28 loss to Normal’s Community High School in Saturday’s IHSA Class 7A quarterfinal playoff game in Lombard.

The Rams finished their season with an overall record of 10-2.

Community High School improved to 12-0 with Saturday’s win at Glenbard East. The Ironmen will face Downers Grove North (10-2) in this week’s Class 7A semifinal matchup in Downers Grove. The winner will meet Batavia or Mt. Carmel in the Class 7A state-championship game in Normal on Nov. 25.

The quarterfinal battle between the Ironmen and Rams featured some wild momentum swings. Community High School—the No. 1 seed in the 32-team Class 7A playoff field— scored two quick touchdowns to take an early 14-0 lead. Glenbard East, the No. 9 seed in the Class 7A level, then scored four first-half touchdowns to take a 28-14 halftime lead.

Community High School responded to the Rams’ 28-point surge by scoring 31 unanswered points during the second half.

“Coming out of halftime, we’re up 28-14,” said Glenbard East coach John Walters after Saturday’s season-ending loss. “They [the Ironmen] are the No. 1 seed. We knew they were good. They finished it off in the second half, and we didn’t.”

The Rams took the game’s opening kickoff and punted after three plays from scrimmage. The Ironmen then drove 67 yards for a touchdown on just four plays—all running plays.

They finished the drive with a 10yard scoring run and made the ensuing extra-point kick to take a 7-0 lead with 9:22 left in the first quarter.

Moments later, the Ironmen intercepted a Glenbard East pass and raced 34 yards for a touchdown. The extra-point kick gave Community High School a 14-0 lead with 7:53 remaining in the opening quarter.

The Rams’ next offensive possession yielded a 60-yard touchdown drive. Senior quarterback Blake Salvino fired a 21-yard touchdown pass to junior Chris Renford with 3:15 to play in the first quarter. Senior Ryan Snell made the extra-point kick to cut Community High School’s lead to 14-7.

Glenbard East’s next offensive drive featured just one play—a 50yard touchdown pass from Salvino to junior Amonte Cook. Snell added the extra-point kick to even the score at 14-14 with 1:39 left in the first quarter.

Cook caught a short pass on his scoring play. He broke a tackle and raced down the field and into the end zone.

Glenbard East senior Matt Larson broke a 68-yard run on the Rams’ next offensive drive. That run ad-

vanced the ball to Community High School’s 10-yard line. A couple of plays later, Larson delivered a 4-yard touchdown run that gave Glenbard East its first lead of the game. Snell made the extra-point kick to push the Rams’ lead to 21-14 with 7:57 left in the first half.

It looked like Glenbard East might hold a 21-14 advantage at halftime.

But with the ball at their own 18-yard line, the Rams tried a pass play in the closing seconds of the half. Salvino threw the ball toward Renford, who made a catch around his team’s 40yard line. When the Ironmen’s defender on the play fell down, Renford sprinted into the end zone for an 82-yard touchdown reception with 7.3 seconds remaining in the first half. Snell tacked on the extra-point kick to give the Rams a 28-14 lead.

The Ironmen didn’t need much time to stage their second-half rally. On the third quarter’s first play from scrimmage, Community High School delivered a 65-yard touchdown run. The successful extra-point kick reduced the Rams’ lead to 28-21 with 11:44 left in the third quarter.

On the game’s next play from scrimmage, the Ironmen intercepted a Glenbard East pass and made a short return to the Rams’ 28-yard line. A few plays later, the Ironmen produced a 6-yard touchdown run.

The extra-point kick evened the score at 28-28 with 9:01 left in the third quarter.

Glenbard East’s next drive ended with a punt. The Ironmen blocked that punt and recovered the ball in the end zone for their third touchdown of the third quarter. The extra-point kick gave the Ironmen a 35-28 lead with 5:47 to play in the quarter.

“They get a long touchdown run; we throw an interception, then they block a punt,” said Walters while discussing the decisive third quarter. “That kind of turned the tide for them. We had a lot of momentum going into halftime, but it didn’t carry over in the second half. We got buried under 21 quick ones. We tried to dig ourselves out and couldn’t get it done.”

Community High School’s defense made a fourth-down stop late in the third quarter to end a Glenbard East drive near midfield. The Ironmen stopped Larson short of a first down on a fourth-and-two run.

The Ironmen pushed their lead to 38-28 by making a 29-yard field goal with 9:18 left in the game.

Community High School finished its second-half scoring surge with a 24-yard touchdown pass with 5:27 to play. The extra-point kick moved the Ironmen’s lead to 45-28.

Salvino completed 13 of 25 pass attempts for 200 yards and three touchdowns. He threw three interceptions.

Cook brought in four receptions for 61 yards and one touchdown. Larson rushed for 133 yards and one touchdown on 23 carries.

While their season ended with a disappointing loss, the Rams can be proud of their 2023 accomplishments. The team went 8-1 during the regular season and won a share of the Upstate Eight Conference title.

Glenbard East then won two playoff games to advance to the IHSA quarterfinal round for the first time in 24 years. The Rams’ 1999 team won three post-season games and advanced to the semifinal round of that year’s Class 8A playoffs.

“It’s tough because our season just ended,” said Walters. “But when you win 10 games, win a conference championship and you get a quarterfinal plaque, that’s a pretty special season.”

Broncos beat Princeton to earn spot in Class 3A semifinals

The Montini Catholic football team will face Byron in this Saturday’s IHSA Class 3A semifinal playoff game in Lombard. The Broncos haven’t played a semifinal playoff contest at home in eight years. On Nov. 21, 2015, Montini faced Prairie Ridge in an IHSA Class 6A semifinal battle in Lombard. The field was clear on the morning of the game, but a heavy snowstorm covered the turf during the first half. The field was plowed at halftime, and the snow subsided in the second half. The Broncos defeated Prairie Ridge 35-27 to earn a berth in the Class 6A championship game.

Montini defeated Crete-Monee 38-15 in the title contest at Northern Illinois University on Nov. 28. The Montini football program won its sixth IHSA state title in 2015. The Broncos also won state championships in 2004, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012. There won’t be any snow on the field in this Saturday’s semifinal game in Lombard, which will begin at 1 p.m. The forecast calls for sunny skies and a high in the mid-50s.

The Montini Catholic football team advanced to the IHSA Class 3A semifinals following Saturday’s 27-9 quarterfinal victory over Princeton High School in Princeton.

The Broncos will face undefeated Bryon (12-0) in this week’s semifinal contest in Lombard. The game will begin at 1 p.m. this Saturday, Nov. 18.

The winner will meet Mount Carmel or Roxana in the Class 3A state-championship game in Normal on Nov. 24.

Byron is the No. 1 seed in the 32team Class 3A playoff field. Princeton was the No. 2 seed. Montini, which improved its overall season record to 9-3 with its win in Princeton, is the No. 6 seed in the Class 3A level. Roxana (12-0) is the No. 3 seed. Mount Carmel (11-1) is the No. 4 seed.

Princeton kicked a 31-yard field goal on the final play of the first half to take a 3-0 halftime lead over the Broncos in Saturday’s game, which took place in clear weather on the Tigers’ shaggy grass field. Montini’s offense came to life in the first minute of the second half, when junior Santino Florio took and handoff and broke a 69-yard touchdown run. Senior Cole Stumbaugh added the extra-point kick to give Montini a 7-3 lead with 11:04 remaining in the third quarter.

Junior defensive back Max Bell of the Broncos recovered a Princeton fumble later in the third quarter.

Bell made the recovery at the Tigers’ 39-yard line. Moments later, Montini senior Alex Marre ran 29 yards for a touchdown to extend the Broncos’ lead to 13-3 with 2:48 left in the third quarter. Stumbaugh missed the ensuing extra-point kick.

Montini junior defensive back Isaac Alexander recovered another Princeton fumble late in the third quarter. He made the recovery at Montini’s 47-yard line.

Marre delivered a 21-yard touchdown run with 11:22 left in the fourth quarter. Stumbaugh added the extra-point kick to push the Broncos’ lead to 20-3.

Princeton scored its only touchdown of the game on a 1-yard run with 5:24 to play. The Tigers tried a two-point conversion run, but the Broncos stopped the ball carrier short of the goal line.

Marre scored his third and final touchdown of the day on a 38-yard run with 3:59 remaining. Stumbaugh added the extra-point kick to account for the game’s final point.

Marre ran 21 times for 183 yards and three touchdowns in Saturday’s quarterfinal victory. Junior quarterback Gaetano Carbonara completed six of 11 pass attempts for 57 yards.

He didn’t throw any interceptions.

Five of Carbonara’s completions went to senior George Asay, who made five receptions for 50 yards.

“Our guys did a good job,” said Montini coach Mike Bukovsky while discussing the Broncos’ performance in Princeton. “It was a good win for us. Our guys were a little frustrated at halftime, but we started to get things rolling in the second half. Our running game was working, and our defense played really well and forced some turnovers in the second half.”

If Montini can beat Byron this Saturday in Lombard, it will secure the program’s first state-championship game appearance in five years. Joliet Catholic defeated the Broncos 35-27 in the Class 5A title contest in 2018.

Montini’s program has won six IHSA state football titles—one at the 4A level, four at the 5A level and one at the 6A level. The Broncos won their most recent state championship in 2015, when they beat Crete-Monee 38-15 in the Class 6A title game.

“Byron is a challenge,” said Bukovsky of this week’s semifinal opponent. “They’ve got a lot of good things going on over there. We’re excited to be able to play at home for a chance to go downstate. That’s what it’s all about. I’m really happy for this group, especially our seniors.

They’ve had a great bounceback.

They’ve had to deal with COVID and some down years we really aren’t used to having. But they stayed with us. I can’t say enough good things about these guys.”

Warriors claim third-place trophy in Normal Team finishes historic season with a 40-2 record

The Willowbrook girls volleyball team completed its spectacular 2023 season by winning the third-place trophy in the IHSA Class 4A state tournament, which ended on Saturday night in Normal.

The Warriors defeated Barrington 25-20, 23-25, 25-17 in Saturday’s third-place contest at Illinois State University’s CEFCU Arena (formerly known as Redbird Arena).

Willowbrook finished its season with an overall record of 40-2.

“That feels great; absolutely amazing,” said Willowbrook coach Irene Mason while describing the satisfaction of winning the thirdplace contest. “I told these girls that two teams in the state get to end on a win, and we were going to be one of them. It feels good. These girls played great. They believed. They worked together.”

The Warriors won their first 19 matches of the season before suffering a loss. They then won 20 straight matches on the way to earning regional, sectional and super-sectional titles and advancing to the Class 4A semifinals in Normal.

Willowbrook’s 20-match winning streak ended with Friday’s loss to Benet Academy in a semifinal battle.

The Redwings edged the Warriors 25-19, 24-26, 25-16.

Mother McAuley beat Benet 2522, 18-25, 25-16 in Saturday night’s Class 4A state-championship match, which was a rerun of last year’s title contest. One year ago, the Mighty Macs beat Benet in a three-game slugfest in the 2022 Class 4A state final. Mother McAuley finished second (to Metea Valley) in the 2021 Class 4A state tournament.

Mother McAuley finished its 2023 championship season with a 38-4 re-

cord. Benet completed the season with a 39-3 record.

The Warriors had to wait until the end of the Mother McAuley-Benet match to receive their individual medals and third-place trophy. Willowbrook finally received its trophy at about 11:45 p.m.

The Willowbrook girls volleyball program never won an IHSA regional title until two years ago, when the 2021 Warriors won regional and sectional championships before losing a super-sectional match (to Mother McAuley). One year ago, the 2022 Willowbrook team won a regional title before losing in a sectional final.

One of the 2023 team’s goals was to produce the program’s GOAT (Greatest of All Time) season. This year’s Warriors clearly achieved that

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Villa Park Chief of Police Michael Rivas announced that bond has been set for a Florida man accused of leading Omar Castro police on a high-speed chase.

Omar Castro, 22, appeared at a bond hearing where Judge Michael Reidy set bond at $100,000.

Castro is charged with two counts of aggravated fleeing and eluding a police officer (Class 4 felony) and multiple misdemeanor and petty traffic offenses including two counts of aggravated speeding in a construction zone, reckless driving and driving while license suspended, all Class A misdemeanors.

On Thursday, June 22 at approximately 8:28 p.m., an Elmhurst police officer responded to a call of a stolen motor vehicle near Route 83 and North Avenue. It is alleged that

when the officer located the vehicle, later determined to be driven by Castro, Castro put his car in reverse and proceeded southbound on Route 83. It is alleged that as the officer pursued, Castro reached speeds of approximately 107 mph in a 45-mph zone and disobeyed three traffic lights.

It is alleged that near 16th Street, Castro completed a U-turn and continued driving northbound on Route 83 reaching speeds of approximately 100 mph in a 35-mph construction zone, at which time the pursuing officer lost sight of the vehicle.

A short time later, the vehicle was located abandoned in a school parking lot. Officers responded to the school parking and at approximately 8:42 p.m., located Castro approximately one block away from the school. He was then taken into custody after a brief struggle with the officers.

Castro’s next court appearance is scheduled July 27 for arraignment in front of Judge Telander.

Reggie Meadows, died after suffering a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

Deputy Chief Eric Swanson of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office said in a news conference Sunday, June 18 that at least two other victims were in critical condition.

“The motive behind this incident is unclear,” Swanson said. “This is still an active investigation.”

“We are working around the clock to bring those responsible to justice,” the sheriff’s office said in a recent post on Twitter, urging anyone with information to call 630-407-2343.

The Juneteenth celebration started at around 6 p.m. Saturday, June 17.

According to the Daily Herald, DuPage County Sheriff’s deputies had been monitoring the celebration, but responded to a 911 call of a fight that had broken out nearby.

While deputies were investigating that call, they heard gunshots and

“Out of nowhere, there was a major gunfight for like 30 seconds,” eyewitness Bartosz Majerczyk told ABC 7 Eyewitness News. “I’d say, 60 plus rounds. You could tell it was two different groups of people shooting at each other.”

Another witness, who said she was at the celebration, told ABC 7 Eyewitness News “everybody started running” when the gunfire erupted.

“There was a man,” she said. “He fell on top of me. He had a gunshot wound to his leg. It was like something you can’t imagine.”

In a statement, Governor JB Pritzker said he is closely monitoring the shooting.

“Gathering for a holiday celebration should be a joyful occasion, not a time when gunfire erupts and families are forced to run for safety,” Gov. Pritzker said. “As I’ve said time and

Meadows was described as a “devoted father whose life was tragically taken from us amidst a Juneteenth celebration” on a GoFundMe page set up to provide support to his two young children, RJ and Gabby.

Meadows was “a beacon of love and strength, who fell victim to a devastating crossfire incident that shattered the peace and joy of what should have been a day of celebration.

“Amidst the chaos, Reggie tragically lost his life, leaving an indelible mark of grief on his family and community. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the other victims who were injured, as we mourn the loss of Reggie, a remarkable individual who touched the lives of many.”
