After 14 months, remains of missing Elmhurst resident, UA exec found

Contractors make discovery deep in forest preserve where car was located

On the afternoon of Sunday, Oct. 24, the Independent learned the news that the remains of Elmhurst resident and United Airlines executive Jake Cefolia had been Jake Cefolia found deep in the Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve in Lemont, where his vehicle had been abandoned 14 months ago.

According to several news sources, including NBC Channel 5 News in Chicago, DuPage County Forest Preserve Police Chief David Pederson said that on Friday, Oct. 22, contractors were working in the wooded area removing invasive species, when they found what appeared to be human remains hung from a low hanging tree branch.

“The human remains were located in a very thickly covered brush area – extremely -- so you could be 10 feet away and not see it,” Pederson told NBC 5.

According to a release from DuPage County Coroner Richard Jorgensen, a forensic odonatologist confirmed the remains to be Cefolia’s after examining his dental records.

Jorgensen released the identity of Cefolia, 50, after an autopsy was performed on Saturday, although a cause and manner of death have not

yet been determined and remain under investigation, the release said.

The history of a missing person In its Aug. 20, 2020, issue, the Independent brought its readers the news that the then-49-year-old senior vice president of Worldwide Sales for United Airlines had last been seen on the evening of Thursday, Aug. 6. After several family members reported that no response had been received from calls and text messages over a few days, Cefolia’s ex-wife went to his home to check on him and then reported him missing to police.

Cefolia’s Range Rover Sport had been discovered in the Lemont forest preserve parking lot, where he often went for a run or to hike the trails.

Officials from the DuPage County Forest Preserve District began a search for Cefolia, using not only Illinois law enforcement, local police and K-9 units but over 100 volunteers who came out to help. A Facebook page set up for those concerned about Cefolia drew 1,600 members.

The DuPage County Division of Transportation (DuDOT) is seeking input from members of the public as DuDOT staff develop a detailed plan for the County’s regional trail network.

Those who use the County’s trails, including the Illinois Prairie Path, the Great Western Trail, and the Southern DuPage Regional Trail, are asked to share their opinions via a survey at www.dupageco.org/bikeway.

Public Engagement Sessions to begin All Fenton Families and their neighbors received an email and print letter invitation regarding Phase 1 (of a total of four) of our Public Engagement Sessions. The goal of the first phase is to gather feedback from our Fenton community. There will be a total of three public engagements in Phase 1. Participants will be provided a presentation, focused on Fenton’s academic, extracurricular, and community successes, and facility challenges and opportunities. In addition, the participants were provided a tour of our facility and the administrators highlighted the areas of the school that need improvements. The participants had several opportunities to ask questions and provide feedback. Written feedback was collected as well.

The feedback from these Phase 1 Sessions will assist us plan for Phase 2.

The next public engagement session is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. in the Community Room.

A Community Engagement Committee has been formed to provide feedback (verbal and written), similar to the public engagement sessions, so we can better plan for our district’s future. It is composed of 23 members: parents of current students and alumni, alumni, community members, and business owners.

Strategic Plan approved Lastly, the Fenton Board of Education approved the District Strategic Plan last week. A district Strategic Plan acts as our road map for the next three years. DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin has announced that an unincorporated Glendale Heights man charged with attacking, beating and sexually assaulting a 65-year-old woman as she arrived to work early in the morning was sentenced to 33 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Kenneth Hatlen, 55, appeared in court Oct. 15 where he entered a plea of guilty to one count of aggravated

criminal sexual assault (a Class X felony) in front of Judge John Kinsella.

Hatlen was also sentenced to three additional years to be served consecutively after entering a plea of guilty to one count of aggravated battery (Class 2 felony) for spitting on a DuPage County Deputy Sheriff while in custody.

On May 10, 2019, at approximately 4:15 a.m., the victim arrived at a

Before she could open the door however, Hatlen, a former employee at the restaurant, grabbed her and dragged her to a grassy area near her car where he strangled her and sexually assaulted her. After the assault, Hatlen then fled the scene and the victim was taken to a local hospital.

An investigation conducted by the Glendale Heights Police Department

led to Hatlen who was taken into custody the following day in Darien.

He appeared in Bond Court on May 12, 2019, where bond was set at $750,000 with 10 percent to apply.

He has remained in custody at the DuPage County Jail since that time.

Hatlen will be required to serve 85 percent of his Class X felony sentence and 50 percent of his Class 2 felony sentence before being eligible for parole.

• Cefolia was trying to sell his Elmhurst home. It hit the market on June 16, had a price reduction on July 16, and had a further price reduction on Aug. 4, two days before he went missing. It is unknown whether or not this information is significant to his disappearance.

According to a report from the York Township Assessor’s Office obtained by the Chicago Tribune, Cefolia sold his four-bedroom, twobath home in Elmhurst for $523,000 in November after having listed it in June.

It is unclear how Cefolia closed on the sale of his home in November, when he went missing in August.

Another question that remains is that Cefolia was reportedly under some sort of criminal investigation at the time he went missing. Several news sources have reported it but the nature of the investigation was never released by authorities.

• He took no traceable devices with him, as his cell phone and Apple Watch were both found at home. According to the missing person’s report filed by the DuPage County For-

est Preserve officers, his abandoned car contained a COVID face mask, a gray pullover and, in the trunk, a set of golf clubs and $120 in cash.

• On Saturday, Aug. 8, Cefolia was reported missing.

• On Monday, Aug. 10, Cefolia’s family hired a private investigator.

• On Friday, Aug. 14 and Saturday, Aug. 15, extensive searches of the Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve were carried out.

• During the searches, articles of clothing were found, which were turned over to police. The found shoes were confirmed not to be Cefolia’s, but it’s not clear if a shirt that was found belonged to him.

Jewish studies scholar to address Elmhurst University Will present annual Heschel lecture

Malka Simkovich is the Crown-Ryan Chair of Jewish Studies and director of Catholic-Jewish Studies at Catholic Theological Union. The author of The Making of Jewish Universalism: From Exile to Alexandria (2016), Simkovich is involved in numerous interreligious dialogue projects to increase understanding and friendship between Christians and Jews.

On Tuesday, Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m., she will present “The Origins and Significance of Jewish Universalism,” this year’s Abraham Joshua Heschel Lecture at Elmhurst University. The lecture also is part of the University’s Religious Literacy Project.

Simkovich’s articles have been published in journals such as Harvard Theological Review and Journal for the Study of Judaism, as

well as online forums such as The Lehrhaus, TheTorah.com, and the Times of Israel. Her book Discovering Second Temple Literature: The Scriptures and Stories That Shaped Early Judaism (2018) received the 2019 AJL Judaica Reference Honor Award.

The annual Heschel lecture, named for prominent Jewish philosopher and theologian Abraham Joshua Heschel, focuses on the Jewish faith. A colleague of theologian and then-Elmhurst College alumnus Reinhold Niebuhr in New York, Heschel played a significant role in both the civil rights movement and in Christian-Jewish dialogue.

The Heschel lecture will take place in the Frick Center, Founders Lounge. Admission is free but reservations are encouraged, at elmhurst. edu/cultural.

Pedal Power is back

Used bicycle collection returns Nov. 13

From 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Nov. 13, “Pedal Power” will host a charity collection of gently-used, working bicycles at the former Stemples Cycle Center location (at 494 Spring Road in Elmhurst). In addition to the Elmhurst collection, Pedal Power will also be collecting bikes across 8 more collection sites in the Chicago area.

The new owner of the Elmhurst location that formerly housed Stemple’s has generously offered for Pedal Power to continue to use the location as a collection point. The new owner of the site is Roberto’s Ristorante & Pizzeria.

“Pedal Power” was created in 2008 by Nicole and Bennett Basil of Wilmette and involves the collection and distribution of outgrown, unused, and gently used bikes. The bikes that are donated to Pedal Power are inspected and then given to Chicago Public School students in lower income areas as a reward for earning good grades. For many of these kids, this is their first bike.

Over the past 13 years, bike collection points have been established in Wilmette, Palatine, Northbrook, Glenview, Lake Forest, Evanston, Winnetka, Skokie, and Libertyville.

Friends of the Basil’s, Grant and Lauren Schleiter of Elmhurst, decided that they wanted to extend this charity effort to Elmhurst in 2017. Grant, currently a junior at Fenwick High School and his sister, Lauren, a freshman at University of Michigan approached Stemple’s Cycle Center in Elmhurst about serving as a collection point and the bike center happily agreed.

Stemple’s closed in 2020 and the site was purchased by the owners of Roberto’s Ristorante and Pizzeria across the street. The owners of Roberto’s generously offered to allow the site to continue to

Oversight Committee Hearing on postal service delays in Chicago

By U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi I recently participated in an Oversight Committee hearing on the United States Postal Service (USPS) issues and delays in Chicago.

During the hearing, I highlighted the need to support the USPS and solve their problems of understaffing, delayed mail, and poor leadership. The delays in the postal service are significant, as one resident informed my office that their envelope took three weeks to travel from Evanston to Northbrook.

My questioning of Mack Julion, president of the National Association of Letter Carriers Local Branch #11, emphasized the extent to which the postal service has a chronic issue of understaffing. My questioning of Melinda Perez, acting assistant Inspector General For Audit in the Office of Inspector General, revealed that two of the lowest performing mail processing plants in the country are in the greater Chicago area.

During the hearing, I also noted my concern for the recent Oct. 1 service standard changes implemented by Postmaster General Louis DeJoy— which lengthened the delivery time for about 30 percent of first-class mail and packages.

Earlier this year, I introduced the Delivering Envelopes Judiciously Ontime Year-round Act, or DEJOY Act, to require the Postal Service to adhere to its traditional service standards.

I want to see the USPS continue its reliable, patriotic service to the American people.

Advancing and Promoting Programming (APP) Act I’m proud to report that on Oct. 12, I reintroduced the Advancing and Promoting Programming (APP) Act with U.S. Reps. Tom Jay Emmer of Minnesota, Danny Davis from Chicago and Jay Obernolte of California. The APP Act creates a database where Americans can find information on federal funding for the research and development of applications for web and mobile devices.

This legislation will actively

promote technological advancement and help American innovators as they create new applications. Between 2016 and 2026, employment in the computer and information technology field is expected to grow by 13 percent.

As someone with a background in engineering, supporting our future technology leaders is especially important to me. In the post-pandemic economy, the APP Act will be crucial in supporting the innovation and growth of our technology field.

My Veterans Essay Contest and Wounded Warrior Fellowship I am excited to announce the inaugural Veterans Day Essay Contest! My office is asking local students to write a short essay about a veteran who has inspired them.

This can be a veteran from your own life, or one from U.S. history.

This contest is open to students in the eighth-12th grade from schools in the 8th Congressional District.

Our winners will be notified on Wednesday, Nov. 10. This essay contest is a great way to see the writing talent from our students and to honor our veterans.

Cullerton spearheads measure creating Veterans’ Accountability Unit

In response to the preventable deaths in Illinois veterans’ homes from COVID-19 and legionella over the past several years, State Sen. Tom Cullerton (D- Villa Park) sponsored a measure to create the Veterans’ Accountability Unit, which passed the Senate Wednesday.

“After the tragic COVID-19 outbreak at the LaSalle Veterans’ Home last year, it is imperative that the agencies charged with helping our veterans have proper oversight,” said Cullerton, chair of the Senate Veterans Affairs committee. “The Veterans Accountability Unit provides an

extra layer of transparency that can help prevent future issues.”

The legislation, House Bill 359, creates the unit, with offices to be housed in Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs buildings and veterans’ homes. The unit will be tasked with reporting complaints and recommendations from veterans, IDVA employees and other Illinois residents to the Office of the Executive Inspector General for the Agencies of the Illinois Governor.

Additionally, the unit will establish a toll-free helpline and email, maintain regular office hours and

create an annual report that includes a summary of complaints and actions taken in response to them.

“The Veterans’ Accountability Unit will make sure our veterans have even more seats the table when it comes to their care in Illinois,” Cullerton said. “We must continue to do what we can to make sure the veterans who have sacrificed so much are properly supported.”

HB 359 passed the Senate last week and will now move to the House for further consideration.

Bill adds another layer of protection for crime victims More survivors of violent crime will be able to keep their home addresses private as participants in the Illinois Address Confidentiality Program under a new law by state Sen. Suzy Glowiak Hilton (D-Western Springs) that expands protections for survivors of human trafficking.

“Violent crime survivors undergo substantial emotional and mental trauma,” Glowiak Hilton said. “By adding human trafficking to the list of crimes protected by the ACP, we’re offering survivors some peace of mind that their sensitive personal information is safe and protected against abusers.”

Glowiak Hilton’s law strengthens the ACP managed by the Illinois Attorney General’s Office by allowing

survivors of human trafficking to participate and keep their addresses private.

Originally, the ACP was established to protect the locations of domestic violence survivors. Last year, Glowiak Hilton supported a law expanding protections for survivors of sexual assault and stalking, and she has now expanded the law to allow human trafficking survivors to opt in as well.

Currently, the ACP provides survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking and their household members with a substitute address to use in place of their actual home, school and work addresses in public records. This helps survivors prevent their former abusers from

being able to locate them.

For example, the ACP substitute address can be used by participants when creating or updating public records, such as a driver’s license or state-issued identification card.

“Expanding the ACP is an integral part of a safety plan for survivors to feel protected in their communities,” Glowiak Hilton said. “This proposal works to ensure survivors have a sense of security to allow them to heal without fear of retaliation from their abusers.”

Senate Bill 593 goes into effect Jan. 1, 2022.

Addison Library presents its ‘Superfans’ Mom and son get the most out of their local library

(Editor’s note: Today the Addison Independent and the Addison Public Library brings the last installment in its series of stories about patrons of the Addison Public Library who are known as ‘Superfans.’ This effort is to spotlight Library Card Sign-up Month.)

Rosa Biondo recalls going to her local library in Chicago as a child with her mother, who taught herself to read in English and wanted her children to be able to do the same.

Now as a parent herself, Biondo has been finding joy in watching her son John, age 8, grow up with the Addison Public Library.

“He can just exist at the library. He can be loud. He can be himself,” she said. “He loves [being at the library].

It’s really exciting to see.”

Biondo and her son visit the library frequently. When her son was younger, he enjoyed going to story times and listening to audiobooks, especially on long car trips. As John has gotten older, he has explored more of the library’s collection and used the library’s computers, too.

“My favorite books are the zombie books and the Bad Kitty series,” John said. “But my real favorite is the video games.”

This year, the Biondo family participated in the library’s revamped Summer Reading program, in which participants received a tote bag with their selected book—which they got to keep—and other goodies that complemented the story. Biondo read The Sun is Also a Star; her son read Who Were the Tuskegee Airmen.

To go along with his book, Biondo borrowed the movie Red Tails and discussed the history covered in both the film and the book.

Biondo does this a lot for her son,

borrowing books and movies and enjoying them simultaneously to make the books come alive.

“We’ll read the book, then watch the movie and talk about which one was better and do some comparisons,” Biondo said. “My son is a busy kid with lots of questions, so having the book and movie together keeps him guided and focused. It doesn’t matter that we have Hulu, Netflix, and Disney+, we still check out movies from the library.”

Over the years, Biondo has gotten to know the library staff as they worked together to find items that fit reading themes she plans for her son.

“Say we’re doing a cooking theme and need help finding books and movies that work. I ask the staff, and they help me plan,” said Biondo. “There have been certain books or movies I haven’t been able to get from this library, but I could order them from a different library and they’re delivered here. I never knew that was an option. It’s amazing that you’re not limited to what’s in the building. You have access to other libraries too, and to me that is really, really nice.”

Borrowing books and movies from the library and through interlibrary loan is the main way the Biondo family uses the library, but they have come to the library to use the public computers as well.

“For a while, we didn’t have internet access at home, and for a good chunk of time we were without a PC after it stopped working,” Biondo said. “I was working an at-home business at the time, so I needed internet and a computer. I was able to get both at the library and supplement what I didn’t have at home at the time. We don’t need [library

Having used the library in so many different ways, Biondo is no stranger to what the library has to offer, and makes a point to share her knowledge with the community members she meets.

“Addison has such a diverse population, and the library works hard

to appeal to the community,” she said. “I work at a local church, and we work with low-income Hispanic population to find resources for them to learn how to speak English and become citizens, and they offer that [at the library].

“I love that the library has Spanish language material and Polish story times. It’s like the library really embraces the community.”

Biondo encourages everyone to

take advantage of the library and get their library card, even if they don’t have a child in school.

“There are so many different things that are available to you,” she said. “If you use [your library card], it’s a great benefit to have. It’s so worth it.”

Her son John agrees. When asked if other kids should come to the library to check it out, he answered without hesitation: “Yes!”

Warriors finish another perfect conference season

A 58-18 victory at Morton completes Willowbrook’s fifth straight season of undefeated WSGC play; Warriors will open the post-season against Whitney Young

The Willowbrook football completed its regular season with Friday night’s 58-18 West Suburban Gold Conference win over Morton in Berwyn. The Warriors finished the regular season with an overall record of 6-3.

Willowbrook went 6-0 in conference play to win its fifth straight West Suburban Gold Conference title. The Warriors have not lost a conference game since the final week of the 2016 regular season.

Willowbrook will open the IHSA Class 7A post-season with this week’s first-round game against the Dolphins of Chicago’s Whitney Young Magnet High School. The game will begin at 7 p.m. at Knute Rockne Stadium in Chicago.

The Dolphins posted a regular-season record of 7-2.

The winner of the battle between Willow-

brook and Whitney Young will meet either Moline or Hampshire in the second round.

“It’s not an easy feat,” said Willowbrook coach Nick Hildreth of the achievement of winning another conference title. “It’s never easy. It’s a grind. We’ve been really banged up and have lost a ton of guys, so we’ve had different guys step up in different spots. Kudos to all of our guys for the work they’ve put in.”

Willowbrook opened the regular season with a pair of non-conference losses at Providence Catholic and Downers Grove North.

Since then, the Warriors’ only loss was a narrow 14-10 setback against York in Villa Park on Oct. 15.

“Since Week 3, I’ve felt like we’ve really turned it on in practice and just the general approach to everything,” said Hildreth.

Bond denied for man who allegedly shot at Lombard officer Suspect currently on bond for armed habitual criminal felony in Cook

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Lombard Chief of Police Roy Newton have announced that bond has been denied for a Chicago man accused of shootRomaine ing at a Lombard Turner police officer.

Romaine Turner, 21, appeared at a bond hearing where Judge Margaret O’Connell granted the state’s request that bond be denied. Turner has been

charged with one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm (Class X felony), one count of armed habitual criminal (Class X felony) and one count of unlawful use or possession of a weapon by a felon (Class 3 felony).

Turner is currently out on bond for armed habitual criminal, a Class X felony, out of Cook County.

On Oct. 21 at approximately 8:30 a.m., the Lombard Police Department responded to an area in the 1-100 block of W. St. Charles Road for a call of a suspicious incident regarding two males wearing ski masks

going into the 7-Eleven.

Upon his arrival, an officer allegedly encountered Turner and another man outside the 7-Eleven.

While the officer was speaking with the men, another Lombard police vehicle pulled into the parking lot at which time Turner allegedly fled on foot.

It is alleged that one of the officers followed Turner when he fled.

It is further alleged that as Turner ran, he appeared to be holding an object while he was running. It further alleged that Turner ran around the corner of a building and that as the officer rounded the corner, Turner raised a hand gun in the direction of the officer and fired one shot towards the officer.

It is alleged that after firing the

shot, Turner continued to flee. Turner was taken into custody later that morning while officers were conducting a search along West St. Charles Road.

“There is absolutely no reason whatsoever that Mr. Turner should have been given a cash bond the first time he was charged as an armed habitual criminal,” Berlin said. “Providing a twice convicted felon the opportunity to post a relatively small bond, just $2,500 in Mr. Turner’s Cook County case, put the public and law enforcement at great risk, as alleged in this case.

“I commend the Lombard Police Department for their quick apprehension of the defendant in this case as well as the Villa Park Police Department for their assistance.”

“I would like to thank our responding officers for their efforts as well as the Villa Park Police Department for their invaluable assistance in taking the suspect into custody,” Newton said.

“I would like to express my gratitude to the numerous civilians who provided valuable information to our officers which allowed us to quickly apprehend the suspect. I would also like to thank State’s Attorney Bob Berlin’s office for their legal guidance throughout this case.”

Turner’s next court appearance is scheduled Nov. 9 for arraignment in front of Judge O’Connell. Both Class X felonies are non-probationable and if found guilty, Turner faces a penalty of between 10 to 45 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Juvenile charged with carjacking from Willowbrook Target store Accused has multiple pending felonies in other counties

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Willowbrook Chief of Police Robert Schaller have announced that a 15-year-old juvenile charged with aggravated vehicular hijacking with a firearm, a Class X felony, appeared at a detention hearing where Judge Anthony Coco ordered the juvenile to be detained until at least his next court date which was Oct. 21 for status.

The juvenile has also been charged with one count of obstructing justice, a Class 4 felony.

On Oct. 13 at approximately 2:45 p.m., officers from the Willowbrook Police Department were dispatched to the Target store located in the 7600 block of Kingery Highway for a report of a vehicular hijacking.

Upon their arrival, officers spoke with the female victim and initiated an investigation.

It is alleged that after the victim finished loading items into her vehicle, she was approached by the juvenile as she was about to enter the driver’s side door. It is alleged while pointing a gun at the victim, the juvenile told her, “Give me the (expletive) keys” and “look at the gun.” It is alleged that the juvenile continued to demand the keys to the victim’s

It is further alleged that after the victim gave the juvenile her keys, she ran back to the Target store and called 911. The investigation led authorities to a nearby hotel where the juvenile was taken into custody without incident within one hour. At the time of his arrest, the juvenile had

multiple pending forcible felony cases in Cook County and one pending forcible felony out of Will County.

“For the second time, in a brazen display of violence, an innocent person became a victim of a vehicular hijacking from a busy store parking lot in the middle of the afternoon,” Berlin said. “What is particularly disturbing about the allegations in this case is that the accused is a 15-year-old juvenile, who currently has three pending forcible felonies out of Cook County and one forcible felony case in Will County.

“The fact that this juvenile was out on pre-trial release facing multiple felonies and armed with a gun is very troubling.

While it is true that the juvenile justice system is restorative in nature, it is also true that the system must still protect the public at large.

If the allegations in this case are proven true, perhaps it is time to address some of the issues that allow a repeat, violent juvenile offender, as alleged in this case, the opportunity to commit further violent crimes while awaiting disposition on previous pending felonies.

Senior Alex Martinez (No. 519) of the Addison Trail boys cross-country team earned an individual berth in this weekend’s IHSA Class 3A Lake Park Sectional with his 15th-place finish at Saturday’s Proviso West Regional in Hillside. Martinez completed the 3.0-mile race in 17 minutes, 1.4 seconds. Addison Trail finished ninth in the regional’s team standings. DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin has announced that a male Naperville Central High School student has been sentenced to two years of probation and 100 hours of community service for placing a racist ad on Craigslist offering for sale an African American student at the same high school.

On Sept. 1, the juvenile entered a plea of guilty to two counts of felony hate crime and one count of misdemeanor disorderly conduct in front of Judge Anthony Coco, who handed down the sentence. Additionally, Judge Coco also ordered that the juvenile undergo individual and/or

family counseling as deemed necessary by the Juvenile Probation Department and submit a DNA sample to the state’s DNA database.

On Nov. 14, 2019, the juvenile took a photograph of the victim while at school. The juvenile then posted an ad on Craigslist with the photograph of the victim accompanied with the caption “Slave for sale (Naperville)” followed by an offensive racial slur.

On Nov. 18, 2019, the Naperville Police Department became aware of the incident and began an investigation which led to the juvenile as the person who posted the ad.

“Hate crimes have no place in a

civilized society and will not be tolerated, regardless of the accused’s age,” Berlin said. “Studies show that the victims of hate crimes can suffer from depression, increased anxiety, low self-esteem and insecurity among other things. Everyone deserves the right to feel safe and welcome in our communities and my office will continue to charge and prosecute anyone, regardless of age, who engages in this type of behavior. It is my sincerest hope that with the help of our Juvenile Probation Department, the juvenile involved in this incident will mature into a productive member of society.”

The tribute will be held at 12 noon in Hammerschmidt Chapel on the Elmhurst University Campus. The Elmhurst University Wind Ensemble

The Warriors missed the extra-point kick, leaving their lead at 34-3 with about five minutes left in the first half.

Morton scored on its next drive to cut Willowbrook’s lead to 34-10.

The Warriors responded with Palicki’s 32-yard touchdown pass to Tumilty. Palicki ran across the goal line on the two-point conversion play to raise the lead to 42-10 with 1:39 remaining in the first half.

The Warriors had one more offensive possession before halftime.

Morton’s punter couldn’t handle a high snap in the closing seconds of the second quarter. Willowbrook’s offense then took the field at the Mustangs’ 7-yard line with three

seconds on the clock. Palicki tossed a pass into the end zone on the next play, but it was incomplete, leaving the Warriors with a 42-10 halftime lead.

Tumilty intercepted a Morton pass early in the second half and made a lengthy return to the Mustangs’ 25-yard line. The Warriors scored on the ensuing series, with Palicki firing an 8-yard touchdown pass to senior Rocco Luczak.

Tumilty added the two-point conversion run to boost the lead to 5010 with 8:30 left in the third quarter. The lead of at least 40 points triggered a running clock for the remainder of the game.

Sophomore Noah Brockie scored Willowbrook’s final touchdown of the night on a 2-yard run with less than five minutes to play in the third quarter. Sophomore DaeVeon Madison surged across the goal line on the conversion run to give the Warriors a 58-10 lead.

Morton scored a touchdown and added a two-point conversion pass in the game’s final minute.

The Warriors gathered as a team at their stadium on Saturday evening to learn their first-round playoff opponent. (The IHSA released its post-season pairings online on Saturday night.) Hildreth frequently refers to each season as a heartbeat. He said he remembers his college coach (Hildreth, a Willowbrook graduate, played football at Lake Forest College) describing a team’s season as a heartbeat. By making the playoffs, the Warriors extended this season’s heartbeat for at least one more week.

“That always stuck with me,” said Hildreth after giving his postgame speech to the Warriors at Morton. The coach then referred to having at least one more post-game talk with this season’s group after the upcoming first-round playoff game.

“When that last [post-game discussion] one stops, it will never be the same again. Summer camp’s not the same. Off-season workouts are never the same. It’s a different group.”

Heavy workload expected this week as lawmakers cancel Oct. 21 session Lawmakers didn’t take action on congressional maps, abortion notice repeal

The legislative action was light during the General Assembly’s first week of fall session, and lawmakers in both chambers left town a day early after leadership canceled the Oct. 21 session.

That means bigger items, such as a vote on congressional maps and potential changes to the Health Care Right of Conscience Act and a repeal of the Parental Notice of Abortion Act, will have to wait until this week for substantive action.

Republicans used the light legislative days to make a case against one of the main Democratic agenda items and to push for some of their own— including public safety reforms and checks on the governor’s power—in a series of news conferences.

On Oct. 19, the four women in the Senate Republican Caucus made clear their opposition to repealing the Pa-

rental Notice of Abortion Act, which requires that a physician give 48 hours’ notice to a parent or guardian of a person under the age of 18 who intends to get an abortion.

The law does not require the guardian to give consent, and doesn’t apply if an adult family member waives the notice in writing. Additionally, there are exceptions for minors who are victims of physical or sexual abuse or neglect by an adult family member, if the minor is married or emancipated, or if the provider determines there is a medical emergency. A judge can also waive the requirement.

Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, characterized the issue as one of parents’ rights that is independent of “the typical pro-life vs. pro-choice debate.”

Parents should have a right to know when their child is going to undergo a major medical procedure such as an abortion, the GOP senators argued.

Sen. Sally Turner, R-Beason, said

repealing the parental notice requirement “will not help the minor but may harm the minor.” She said a repeal would “make it easier for sexual predators and sex traffickers to abuse our children.”

The ACLU of Illinois countered that claim in a news release, circulating a letter cosigned by several groups that aid sexual assault victims, such as the Chicago Alliance Against Sexual Exploitation.

“Repealing the Parental Notice of Abortion Act in Illinois would not result in more child trafficking,” the groups wrote in the letter. “It would also not impact the ability for child trafficking victims to be identified.”

They said the Republican claims “rely on an erroneous belief that parents and/or social networks are always safe and healthy individuals in a young person’s life and that, if notified, they would assist in an intervention to help the young person.”

“However, what we know is that victims are often lured into a trafficking or exploitative situation because they lack parental and/or familial support,” they wrote in the letter. “Traffickers often come along to fill such a void in the young person’s life. In fact, traffickers can be and often are the young person’s parents or family members.”

Sen. Terri Bryant, R-Murphysboro, however, argued that the existing exceptions in the law are protection enough for minors who have been abused.

Rep. Anna Moeller, D-Elgin, who carries the repeal bill in the House, told Capitol News Illinois she still hopes to call it for a vote this week, although she did not indicate whether she had enough votes lined up in support of the repeal.

Public safety push While Moeller said this week will be a busy one, there’s been no indication that the majority party Democrats will take up the other two matters pushed by Republicans last week: checks on executive authority and public safety reforms.

Republicans from both chambers gathered outside of the Illinois Police Officers Memorial on the Capitol Grounds Oct. 20 to push for a reform package spearheaded by former prosecutor and current state Sen. Chapin Rose, R-Mahomet.

That package includes a bill that would appropriate $100 million to the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board to fund grants to local departments for gang violence,

carjacking and motor vehicle theft prevention, as well as officer staffing.

Another bill would eliminate good time sentence reductions for someone who brought a weapon to a penal institution or attacked a law officer.

Another would require a prosecutor to provide a written explanation if a weapons offense is plea bargained to a lesser sentence.

Rose also touted a “10 and life” provision, requiring a minimum 10-year sentence for aggravated discharge of a firearm, use of a stolen or illegally acquired firearm in an offense, unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, armed habitual criminal offenses or aggravated hijacking or carjacking. A second such offense would come with a life sentence.

“We’re not talking about the so called low-level nonviolent offender,” Rose said. “We’re talking about violent offenders who are walking our streets, gun traffickers, carjackers. …

The brunt of our effort is to take the violent criminals, the gun traffickers the carjackers, the shooters, off the streets.”

The Republicans were critical of a sweeping criminal justice reform passed by Democrats in January that included an end to cash bail in favor of a to-be-developed system that allows pretrial release based on the offender’s threat level.

The sponsors of some of the main provisions in that January criminal justice package—Sen. Robert Peters and Rep. Justin Slaughter, both Chicago Democrats—wrote an op-ed in the Chicago Tribune last week criticizing the GOP’s public safety push.
