Household hazardous waste collection event deemed successful On Saturday, Oct. 5, a one-day household hazardous waste collection event was held at the Bensenville Public Works Facility. The event was sponsored by Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) and in partnership with DuPage County and Heritage Environmental Services, LLC. Bensenville’s own Emergency Management Agency provided the necessary traffic control while volunteers from Public Works and the County conducted on-site surveys and facilitated traffic movement. The Village of Bensenville was selected as one of five locations to host a hazardous waste collection event for the fall. Other sites throughout Illinois included Peoria, Quincy, Champaign, and Edwardsville. Materials recycled included flamma-

ble liquids, 1946 feet of fluorescent lamps, acid corrosives, antifreeze, oil based paints, pesticides, and other hazardous materials. It was very well attended with a total of 350 households that took advantage of this free, well-organized event. “Thank you to the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency & the DuPage County for selecting Bensenville to host this event,” said Village President Frank DeSimone. “Removing unwanted harmful chemicals from households in a safe manner is part of our commitment to responsibility and sustainability.” If you missed this event, long term recycling facilities are located throughout Illinois can be found on the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency’s website at epa.illinois.gov.

have outside lights on as a sign of welcome. All children should WALK, not run from house to house and use the sidewalk if available, rather than walk in the street or cut across lawns. Children are cautioned against running out from between parked cars, or across lawns and yards where ornaments, furniture, or clotheslines present dangers. Above all, do everything you can to ensure a safe trickor-treat adventure this year. Happy Halloween.
