Join Make A Difference Day Oct. 26; Random Acts Of Kindness Day Nov. 2 Volunteers of all ages are invited to help local habitats by removing litter on “Make a Difference Day” Oct. 26 East Branch Forest Preserve and “Random Acts of Kindness” Saturday, Nov. 2 at Hidden Lake Forest Preserve. Both cleanups are 9 a.m. – noon.

Individuals and families as well as school, church, Scout and other groups are invited, but adults must accompany children under 18. Participants can register for Make a Difference Day and Random Acts of Kindness online or by calling 630-2069630. Volunteers should dress for the weather and wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, waterproof boots and gloves as they will be cleaning

along shorelines and trails.

“East Branch is a beautiful preserve to visit in the fall to see the colorful prairie grasses, enjoy a picnic outdoors or drop a line in Rush Lake,” said District Volunteer Services coordinator Deborah Brooks.

“We hope that volunteers feel good knowing their efforts will help keep the environment clean and healthy for all to enjoy.”

Elmhurst College sees another strong enrollment year Elmhurst College is experiencing strong enrollments again this year.

The overall enrollment of about 3,500 students includes 1,263 new students, along with a higher retention rate of returning students than in previous years.

A variety of other initiatives, in-

Among the returning students, the retention rate—the percentage of first-year students who went on to their sophomore year at Elmhurst— rose this year to 82.5%, indicating a higher likelihood of graduation among those students. Another indicator that students will stay until graduation is the campus housing occupancy rate, which reached 98% this fall.

“The high retention and housing occupancy rates are powerful signs that more students are engaging in the life of the campus, both in and

beyond the classroom,” said President Troy D. VanAken. “We’re very pleased to see this, and are continually working to improve the student experience.”

As part of a partnership between Elmhurst College and DuPage High School District 88, just over 30 students from Addison Trail and Willowbrook High Schools are enrolled in advanced mathematics classes at Elmhurst. They will receive credit for the courses at Elmhurst.

Elmhurst’s high enrollments this year mark the third straight year of similar growth at Elmhurst, and come at a time of continued financial strength and the launch of several initiatives aimed at enhancing student success.

This fall, the College launched two new academic programs, in environmental studies and digital media. Elmhurst also recently was awarded $2.75 million by the National Science Foundation to support students, especially from historically underrepresented groups, who are studying in STEM fields.

The College’s ongoing efforts to become a more global and diverse campus also are reflected in the current class of new students. The class includes 22 new international students from several countries, including Vietnam, Greece, India, Australia and China. About 28% of the first-year class is Latinx; and more than half of first-year classes include first-generation college students.

Village senior services luncheon draws 130

On Tuesday, Oct. 1, more than 130 seniors attended a Special Senior Services Luncheon at Monty’s Elegant Banquets hosted by the Village of Bensenville. The event was very successful with approximately 16 businesses that attended to promote their senior services or programs.

The event also featured the Illinois Secretary of State’s Mobile Unit, which provided an opportunity for seniors to renew licenses, state ID’s, and more.

“Thank you to all the local businesses, the Secretary of State, and Senator Don Harmon for attending this event,” said Village President Frank DeSimone. “It provided an opportunity for seniors to learn about resources and programs offered locally that they may not have known about beforehand.

“We are also very thankful to Senator Don Harmon’s office for facilitating the Secretary of State’s Mobile Unit. Having the mobile unit come to Bensenville is a tremendous help to those who have difficulty getting around and waiting in long lines.”

Elmhurst College Bands to give fall concert on Oct. 20 The Elmhurst College Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band will present their Fall Band Concert on Sunday, Oct. 20 at 2 p.m. with guest artist Josh Wirt, professor of tuba at the College.

Under the direction of John Heath, the Symphonic Band will perform The Sinfonians by Clifton Williams and feature others works, such as Christopher Tin’s Sogno di Volare and John Barnes Chance’s Incantation and Dance, and end with Jeremy Bell’s Celtic Wedding.

The Wind Ensemble, under the direction of James Hile, will open its portion of the program with Gavorkna Fanfare by Jack Stamp and Magnolia Star by Steve Danyew. Wirt will be the guest artist on Edward Gregson’s Concerto for Tuba. Other

featured works include Don Gillis’ Shindig and the third movement of David Maslanka’s Symphony No. 7.

The concert is in memory of Ross Kellan, former Elmhurst College professor, music department and music education division chair, and conductor of the Symphonic Band.

Donations will be accepted for the Ross Kellan Memorial Scholarship fund, established to honor the legacy of the late professor.

(StatePoint) As America’s opioid epidemic continues to impact communities large and small, new trends are raising new challenges for doctors and policymakers.

While opioid-related overdose remains a top concern, the epidemic is now driven by illicitly manufactured fentanyl, heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine. In 2017, more than 70,000 people died from drugrelated overdoses, according to the U.S. Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, the bulk of which were from illegal drugs.

Since its founding in 2014, the American Medical Association (AMA) Opioid Task Force has sought ways that practicing physicians could play a role in helping end the epidemic. The task force’s recommendations include urging physicians to enhance their education, as well as advocate for comprehensive care for patients in pain, and for those with a substance use disorder.

Perhaps thanks in part to these efforts, more than 700,000 physicians and other health care providers took courses related to opioids in 2018. What’s more, between 2013 and 2018, the number of opioid prescriptions decreased by more than 80 million — a 33 percent decrease nationally — with every state indi-

vidually decreasing opioid prescriptions over the past five years.

When it comes to helping patients with substance use disorder lead satisfying, productive lives, the science shows what works: medication prescribed by a physician or dispensed at special opioid treatment centers, combined with behavioral counseling and other services.

Despite certain positive trends and clear science, of the 20.3 million people nationwide with a substance use disorder, 90 percent receive no treatment, according to federal officials.

“The opioid crisis today is a national tragedy that requires the same resolve we have mustered for other public health epidemics. Those with substance use disorders deserve no less,” says AMA president, Dr. Patrice A. Harris. “Most people agree we need access to treatments that include medication. Unfortunately, that’s not readily available for many patients, and this epidemic will not be reversed until we deal with access issues and stigma associated with opioid misuse.”

The AMA stresses that while doctors are leading in areas where they can have an influence, they cannot end the epidemic alone. To combat the issue at the state and national

level, the organization has issued a national “roadmap” to policymakers focused on these specific actions: • Patients and physicians should have conversations about safe storage and disposal of opioids and all medications; and increase access to the opioid overdose reversal medication, naloxone, to patients at risk of overdose.

• Insurance providers should remove barriers that prevent patients from obtaining affordable medication-assisted treatment combined with counseling.

• Policymakers and regulators should enforce laws that require mental health benefits to be on par with other health benefits, thereby broadening access to treatment related to mental health and substance use disorders.

• Health insurance providers and pharmacy benefit managers should ensure patient access to affordable, non-opioid pain care.

Montini Catholic High School has recognized 18 freshmen from the Class of 2023. Montini offers scholarships to incoming freshmen who excel on the Freshman Placement Exam.

“All prospective students are encouraged to take the exam,” said admissions representative Jennifer Long Kavanagh (Montini class of ‘97). “This year’s exam, for the Class of 2024 will be on Saturday, Dec. 7.”

Scholarships are awarded based on national percentile ranking of the placement exam scores. Students scoring between the 95th to 99th percentiles are granted a $2,500 scholarship; those between the 90th to 94th receive $1,500; those between the 85th to 89th percentiles earn $1,000.

Kavanagh said all awards are renewable as long as students meet the renewable criteria each year.

In a concert of music to stir your soul, the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Music Director and Conductor Stephen Alltop, continues its 59th season with Tchaikovsky’s Pathétique on Sunday, Nov. 10 at 3 p.m. at Elmhurst Christian Reformed Church.

Filled with familiar melodies, Tchaikovsky’s beloved Symphony No. 6 in B minor (Pathétique) is one of the most expressive and moving musical works ever written and was the composer’s final testimony to his art and life.

The concert also features award-winning sibling violin virtuosi Isabella and Joshua Brown.

Isabella Brown recently won third place in the Cooper International Competition sponsored by the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and The Cleveland Orchestra and performed with the Orchestra in a concert following the competition.

Lawmakers call for probe of College Board for selling student data

Nine Democratic lawmakers are calling on Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul to investigate the business practices of the College Board and sale of data it collects from students who take the SAT and PSAT exams.

The action comes about a week before high school students throughout the state are due to take the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test, or PSAT, which among other things is used to determine eligibility for National Merit Scholarships.

Next spring, high school juniors throughout the state will take the SAT, a college entrance exam that the state mandates as part of its school accountability program.

The College Board’s practice of selling student data through its program called Student Search Service was the subject of national news reports by the New York Times and Washington Post, among others.

In May, a representative from the College Board, Todd Iverson, confirmed to the state Senate Judiciary Committee that the company sells access to data from Illinois students for 45 cents per student. That testimony came as the panel was considering legislation to strengthen the state’s Student Online Personal Protection Act. But Sara Sympson, a spokeswoman for the College Board, said in an email Thursday the nonprofit company does not “sell” the data but, rather, makes the information available “un-

der strict licensing agreements with colleges, scholarship partners, and nonprofit organizations.”

The program is voluntary, she said, and students must “affirmatively declare” they want to have conver-

sations with schools and scholarship providers.

Those who access the data, she said, must adhere to precise rules that require the data be used for only noncommercial, education-related

purposes. They also must agree not to share student information with third parties, other than mail service providers and other contractors, and they must destroy the data once their agreement expires.

Warriors clinch another playoff berth with a win over York Victory extends Willowbrook’s winning streak to six

The Willowbrook football program locked up its fourth straight IHSA playoff berth with Friday’s 35-21 victory over York in Villa Park.

The Warriors, who earned their sixth straight win, improved their overall season record to 6-1 with the victory over the Dukes of the West Suburban Silver Conference.

The Warriors will finish the regular season with a pair of West Suburban Gold Conference contests. Willowbrook, which holds a 4-0 conference mark, will play at Morton (0-7, 0-4) this Friday. The Warriors will complete the regular season with a home game against Proviso East.

Willowbrook won the 2017 and 2018 conference titles with perfect 6-0 records. Victories over Morton and Proviso East will give the Warriors their third straight unblemished conference season.

The Warriors began Friday’s game against York with a flurry. Willowbrook received the opening kickoff and needed just four plays to drive 80 yards for a touchdown. Senior Deandre Holliday rushed for 18 yards on the game’s first play from scrimmage.

Senior quarterback Sam Tumilty connected with senior receiver Everett Stubblefield on a 55-yard pass on the next play. One play later, senior Ta’Vion Geanes ran six yards for a touchdown to give the Warriors a 6-0 lead barely one minute into the game, which took place in chilly and clear weather.

Sophomore kicker Izzy Manning made the first of her five extra-point kicks to raise Willowbrook’s lead to 7-0.

York (3-4) punted the ball away on its first offensive series. The Warriors

then drove 70 yards for a touchdown to take a 14-0 lead with 5:03 left in the first period. Tumilty scrambled and threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to senior Alessio Battaglia on a fourthdown play.

“We definitely started off fast,” said Tumilty after the game. “We slowed down a little in the middle of the game.

Our coaches always preach—start fast, finish fast.”

Both teams turned the ball over on interceptions later in the opening quarter. Junior Mohammad Ayesh of the Warriors intercepted a York pass.

Willowbrook failed to score on its subsequent drive.

The Warriors scored their third touchdown of the night with 3:34 left in the second quarter. Geanes scored on a short run across the goal line. A 33-yard pass from Tumilty to sophomore Nick Mabutas set up the touchdown.

The Dukes scored their first touchdown of the night with 32.8 seconds left in the first half. Willowbrook’s halftime advantage stood at 21-7.

Geanes scored his third touchdown of the game late in the third quarter.

His short burst helped the Warriors to a 28-7 lead with 1:47 left in the third period.

York kept battling in the final quarter, scoring a touchdown to cut Willowbrook’s lead to 28-14 with 11:01 to play. The Dukes then intercepted a pass, which helped them begin a drive at the Warriors’ 39-yard line. The drive ended when Ayesh broke up a pass near the goal line on a fourth-and-goal play from the 16-yard line.

If Willowbrook can win its last two regular-season games, it will post a perfect 6-0 conference record for the third straight year.

“We got off to a quick start,” added Hildreth. “After that it was kind of back and forth. There are a lot of things we need to clean up. We turned the ball over twice, and we lost some points out there.”

York scored the game’s final touchdown with 2:28 to play.

The Warriors have advanced to the state quarterfinal round of the playoffs in each of the last three seasons. They won’t know their 2019 playoff standing until Oct. 26, when the IHSA releases the playoff pairings. They don’t know who they will play in the 10th week of the season, but they know they will be playing.

“It feels good,” said Tumilty of clinching the playoff berth. “I love being out with this team and these coaches. I think it’s great for us that we’re guaranteed another week with each other.”

Addison Trail boys soccer team goes toe-to-toe with state power Morton

The Addison Trail boys soccer team gave state power Morton all it could handle and then some.

The Blazers dropped a tough 2-1 West Suburban Conference Gold Division game on the road at Morton.

The game was tied 0-0 at halftime.

Addison Trail scored three minutes into the second half to take the lead, but Morton rallied and put two in during the last 11 minutes of the game to record the win.

“We played so hard and came so close to pulling off the upset against the No. 2 team in the state on the road,” said Addison Trail coach Ryan Dini. “To be honest, it was a heartbreaking loss.”

Addison Trail also scored a 6-2 WSC Gold win against Downers Grove South. The Blazers scored four goals in the first 20 minutes of the game to take control. Through late last week, the Blazers were 11-4-2 overall and 4-1 in WSC Gold action.

and three assists. Senior midfielder Leo Acosta had six goals and 14 assists.

“We are competing very hard as a team,” said Dini. “Our seniors know their high school soccer careers are coming to an end. There is urgency in the tone that is being set that it is now or never.”

Dini likes the way his team has ratcheted up the pressure against opposing teams of late. “Our team is doing an excellent job in pressing and forcing other teams into costly mistakes,” he said.

“We have worked on this in practice and are seeing results in game. We have improved on our preparation before game. We have more focus at practice and are doing a nice job of implementing our game plan against teams we have scouted.”

On the offensive end of things, Dini said the team is “still not where we want to be on this,” he said. “We are lacking some buildup in the middle of the field so we can get numbers up on the attacking end. Our team speed has made up for this at times, but we are lacking some consistency. We need to do a better job of combination passing and getting the ball to our playmakers in space.

We will continue to drill this and hope for improvements down the stretch.”

Dini has seen positives defensively.

“Our team defense has been pretty good this year,” he said. “We start three out of four players who are juniors, so that is exciting for the future.”

Addison Trail has surrendered 22 goals in 17 games this season. “We have played some of the best teams in the area, so that is impressive. Martin Murillo is back to his top form and is our leader in the back. We are going to need our defense to be really good in regionals, since we will play some explosive teams. I have enjoyed the progress our defense has made this season.”

Goalie Ernesto Padua was injured in the Morton contest. “Ernesto has been having a really nice season and has played all but 20 minutes in the net for us,” Dini noted. “This is a big loss, but he should be back for the playoffs.

junior Angle Gomez and sophomore Anthony Dionne. We need both guys to step up for us and give us quality minutes. It will be a good learning experience for both players.”

Hernandez was cited for his continually improving leadership skills. “Anthony has become a leader for us and is playing at an unbelievable work rate on the field and is scoring huge goals for us,” said Dini. “I like how has really stepped up. It’s showing on the field.”

Hernandez has four goals in his last two conference games. “They have been really good goals and he is finishing his opportunities,” said Dini. “He has equaled his goal total from last year already, and we still have three games left plus the playoffs. And he is only a junior, so that is exciting.”

Acosta has been key for the Blazers in the middle of the field. “Leo demands so much attention in the middle for us,” said Dini. “He has 14 assists and is such a playmaker for us. He has grown into the player that we knew he could become. His size and athleticism really gives us consistency in the midfield.”

Addison Trail has games this week with Hinsdale Central and Leyden on the road before starting the Class 3A playoffs Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 5 p.m. at St. Charles North.

“We have had a nice season so far,” said Dini. “We currently are tied for second place with Leyden in the conference. Leyden plays at Morton (this week), so we need Leyden to beat Morton if we want to have a chance to share the conference title. If not, we will play Leyden for second place on Thursday at their place in the last game of the regular season.

“I predicted we would be 12-6-2 this season going into the playoffs. Right now, we are 11-4-2 so we are about where I thought we could be coming into the year. We play such a tough schedule, so I am pleased with the season. It would have been really special to win at Morton, but we fell just a little short. Hopefully, we can be special in the playoffs and pull off some big wins.

Willowbrook girls golfer Rattana advances to sectional Donovan competes in boys golf playoff for sectional berth

Willowbrook sophomore Emma Rattana’s quest for a second straight berth in the IHSA Class 2A girls golf state tournament continued after her strong showing in last week’s regional.

Rattana finished sixth among all individuals at the IHSA Class 2A Glenbard East Regional, held Oct. 10 at Glendale Lakes Golf Club in Glendale Heights.

Rattana carded an 18-hole round

of 82 (41 on each nine) and earned one of the individual sectional-qualifying sports. She played earlier this week in the Class 2A Hoffman Estates Sectional at Bridges of Poplar Creek Country Club in Hoffman Estates, where berths in the state finals were on the line.

Willowbrook senior Alexis Masseo tied for 31st, shooting a 100.

Freshman Mickey Martens tied for 37th with a 103. Junior Peyton Mitrick tied for 40th with a 106 while Senior Julianna Paulsen tied for 45th (109). Junior Kayla Raue-Lease was 51st with a 123.

Boys golf The Willowbrook boys golf team concluded its season at the Class 3A Hinsdale South regional held at Carriage Greens of Darien (par-70 from the blue tees).

The Warriors shot 374 and finished sixth as a team.

Junior John Donovan shot an 18-hole score of 91 and lost in a playoff to qualify for the sectional. Senior Utah Keehner and junior Andrew Rugg each shot a 94, while senior Logan Rattana shot a 95.

The Addison Trail boys golf team finished fourth at its own Class 3A Addison Trail regional held recently at The Preserve at Oak Meadows.

The Blazers finished with 369 strokes, 31 behind Oak Park-River Forest, which snagged the third

and final team sectional-qualifying spot.

However, Addison Trail qualified three individuals for this week’s Class 3A Glenbrook North sectional at Sportsman’s in Northbrook.

Senior Jimmy Cerven advanced as an individual after shooting an 82. He tied for second among the individual sectional qualifiers not on sectional-qualifying teams.

Junior Peter Markopoulos shot 90 and advanced to sectionals, while sophomore Eli Aquinos shot 96 and made the sectional cut.

Willowbrook’s Deci scores two goals against Hinsdale South Warriors readying for upcoming state playoffs Saturday

While his team didn’t get its desired result, Willowbrook boys soccer coach Dan Riskind was happy with how his team played in a tough 3-2 double overtime loss to Hinsdale South in West Suburban Conference Gold Division play Oct. 10.

In that game, senior Norm Deci had both Willowbrook’s goals.

“It was a good game,” Riskind said. “We played with a man down

for most of the game.”

Willowbrook led 2-1 late, but Hinsdale South tied it with 24 seconds left in regulation on a play off a long throw-in.

The Hornets won the game in the second overtime period with eight seconds left with a goal off a free kick.

“Wow, a gut punch,” said Riskind of the two late goals, “but our guys played well.”

Willowbrook was coming off a 7-0 WSC crossover loss to Glenbard West.

“We worked a lot on defense,” Riskind said. “We worked hard defensively against Hinsdale South and did not give up a goal during run of play. Defensively, we are

trying to stay compact. We are trying to work together as one defensive unit. We’re trying to work on helping defenders push people to the flanks. We did a good job of that against Hinsdale South.”

Riskind labeled the team’s offense as a continued work in progress.

“We have been focusing in more on the defensive because we have been giving up a lot of goals,” he said. “We are trying to hit people in the channel. Norm has done a great job of finishing his chances and has used his speed to score a couple goals. He’s been playing really well lately.”

Junior Kevin Kapica and senior Brian Fuentes also have stepped

things up of late for the Warriors.

“We moved Kevin to center back and he has played really well,” said Riskind. “Brian also has been playing well. Norm, Kevin and Brian have done well for us.”

Willowbrook hosted Proviso East on Tuesday. The Warriors wrap up their regular season hosting West Chicago Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

Willowbrook improved to 5-101 overall with Saturday’s 1-0 non-conference home win over Montini.

This week’s match against Proviso East closed out the WSC Gold schedule. The Warriors entered the match with an 0-5 conference record.

“We have two games here where

the competition is right around where we are at,” said Riskind.

“Hinsdale South was ranked right around where we were. I thought that would be what it was, a close game. I expected us to put in a good effort and be competitive and that is what happened.”

Willowbrook opens the IHSA Class 3A state playoffs Saturday at Wheaton-Warrenville South. The Warriors are the No. 18 seed in the Class 3A St. Charles East sectional, while Wheaton South is the No. 14 seed.

The winner moves on to play No. 2 seed St. Charles East on Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 5 p.m. at Lake Park’s East Campus on Medinah Road in Roselle.

Fenton girls swimming team improving as it prepares for Maine East relays Bison boys golfers wrap up season at regional meet

Fenton girls swimming coach Jeff Baeder has seen plenty of progress from his squad throughout the fall season.

The Bison were 3-5 overall in dual meets through late last week as they prepare for the upcoming Maine East relays Saturday.

At the recent IMSA invite, Adrianna Modelska finished in the top four in the 100 backstroke. “Adrianna is one of our leaders in the stroke events, especially the back and breaststroke where we seem to do well,” Baeder said.

In addition to Modelska, fellow seniors Gabby Molinaro, Hannah Tibbets and Hannah Ceaser have stepped up as leaders.

“Adrianna, Gabby, Hannah Tibbets and Hannah Ceaser have really stepped up and have shown great leadership with a transition to a new head coach,” said Baeder, in his first season leading the program. “They really have made things very easy for the coach to

take over the role. They have allowed the coach to come in with new ideas and have accepted them and incorporated them into a new team culture they are creating. The four of them have created a positive and very supportive culture for the future teams.”

Baeder has been pleased with the team’s improvement on stroke technique and building better endurance.

“It has been paying off,” he said.

“Every week we have a long list of girls with best times, some with amazing time drops. The girls have been putting in a lot of hard work to get where they are.”

Sophomores Alex DeVito and Abby Niehoff also were cited for their contributions.

“The biggest surprise so far is from our two sophomores, Alex and Abby,” Baeder pointed out.

“These two girls have been asked to swim many different events and have knocked it out of the park each time. We will be looking to these two swimmers for our future.”

Junior Kyle Peterson also has been hard at work in the pool and in the leadership department for the Bison. “Her work ethic and ambition have served her well,” Baeder said. “She is another swimmer we are looking forward to working

with for the rest of the year and next. She will be one that will help continue the culture that the seniors have helped to create.”

Boys golf The Fenton boys golf team took seventh at the recent Class 2A Montini regional at Village Links of Glen Ellyn (par-72, 6,770 yards). The Bison finished with a team score of 394.

Patrick Block finished tied for 22nd with a 92. Taylor Siekierski tied for 31st with a 97. Sig Garza took 35th with a 100 and Andrew Hoffing was 39th with a 105. Joe Puzzo was 41st with a 107 and Ivan Astorga tied for 45th with a 114 for 18 holes.

Boys soccer The Fenton boys soccer team is the No. 5 seed in sub-sectional A of the upcoming Class 2A Burlington Central sectional.

The Bison open the playoffs Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 6:30 p.m. at Glenbard South against host Glenbard South, the No. 4 seed in the sub-sectional. The winner plays either No. 1 seed Benet Academy, No. 10 seed Plano or No. 8 seed Wheaton St. Francis on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 5 p.m. at Glenbard South for the regional title.
