This summer, the Village of Bensenville was officially welcomed into the EPA’s Green Power Community Partnership Program. Being a part of this program recognizes that the Bensenville community is using more than 10,025,000 kilowatt-hours of green power annually - 25 percent of Bensenville’s electrical use.

Green Power is defined as electricity produced from solar, wind, geothermal, biogas, eligible biomass, and low-impact small hydroelectric sources. Green power offers zero emissions and helps reduce our carbon footprint.

Purchasing of the green energy comes at no additional costs to residents; residents continue to pay the base ComEd rate for electricity.

Joining the Green Power Community is just one of many ways the Village of Bensenville is working to reduce our carbon footprint. Some of the Village’s other environmentally friendly initiatives include the creation of the Village Arboretum, energy-efficient street lighting projects, establishing several recycling programs, being named a Tree City USA, hosting paper shredding events, pumpkin smash events, and much more. Becoming an EPA Green Power Community is a welcome addition to these initiatives.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) observed Fire Prevention Week last week, during the week of Oct. 4-10. The NFPA has sponsored the public observance of Fire Prevention Week since 1922.

Fire Prevention Week is observed each year during the week of Oct. 9, in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire, which began on Oct. 8, 1871. The fire killed more than 250 people, left over 100,000 homeless, destroyed approximately 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres of land.

The goal of both Fire Prevention Week and Fire Prevention Month (October) is to raise firesafety awareness, and to help ensure that families have a plan and are ready for the unexpected.

The Villa Park Fire Department normally observes Fire Prevention Week with an open house at Fire Station 81, located at 1440 S. Ardmore Ave. The department was unable to hold its open house this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The theme of this year’s Fire Prevention Week was “Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen.”

According to the NFPA, cooking is the No. 1 cause of home fires and home fire injuries.

Unattended cooking is the leading cause of fires in the kitchen.

The NFPA and the Villa Park Fire Department share the following safety tips to keep you from having a fire in your kitchen: • Never leave cooking food unattended. Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, grilling or boiling. If you have to leave the kitchen, even for a short time, turn off the stove.

• If you are simmering, baking, roasting or boiling food, check it regularly. Remain in the home while food is cooking, and use a timer to remind you that you are cooking.

• You have to be alert when cooking. You won’t be alert if you are sleepy or have taken medicine or drugs that make you drowsy.

• Always keep an oven mitt and pan lid nearby when you are cooking. If a small grease fire starts, slide the lid over the pan to smother the flame. Turn off the burner and leave the pan covered until it is completely cool.

• Have a “kid-free zone” of at least 3 feet around the stove and areas where hot food or drinks are prepared or carried.

Fire Prevention Month is an ideal time to test your smoke alarms, change your alarms’ batteries or upgrade to 10-year sealed battery alarms. Three of every five home fire deaths are reportedly related to fires in homes with no working smoke alarms.

County Stormwater committee seeks applications for water quality grant

The DuPage County Stormwater Management Planning Committee voted Tuesday to begin accepting grant proposals for projects aimed at improving the quality of the County’s waterbodies.

In its 22nd year, the Water Quality Improvement Program (WQIP)

grant awards funding to projects exhibiting a regional water quality benefit, including restoration and green infrastructure projects.

“I’m proud that DuPage County is offering this grant funding to our local communities who have faced unprecedented hardships this year,”

Applications now open for COVID-19 Response Fund grants

The DuPage Foundation announced last week that it was accepting applications for a fourth round of DuPage Foundation COVID-19 Response Fund grants. Applications are due no later than Friday, Oct. 23 at 5 p.m.

Only qualified charitable organizations located in DuPage County and serving DuPage County residents can apply.

“Staff from many of our local organizations have worked tirelessly during the past six months to ensure that critical services and meaningful programs continue to meet the increased needs resulting from the pandemic,” said Barb Szczepaniak, vice president

for programs, DuPage Foundation.

“While some agencies have received governmental funding to support their operations and services, the work of many organizations does not fit into those funding priorities. Through this round of grants, we hope to fill some of the emerging funding gaps.”

Organizations interested in applying for the grants are urged to download the COVID-19 Response Fund guidelines and preview the grant application questions prior to completing an application. Applications are being accepted online at dupagefoundation.org/Apply4 through Friday, Oct. 23 at 5 p.m.

October is Infant Safe Sleep Awareness Month Unsafe sleep is a leading cause of death for children one year old and younger; and with families spending more time at home together or making plans to safely visit relatives as the holiday season approaches, Illinois DCFS is reminding parents of three simple steps they can take to ensure their infants are put to sleep safely.

“It is critical for parents and caregivers to learn and use the ABCs of Safe Sleep,” said Illinois DCFS Acting Director Marc D. Smith. “A baby should sleep Alone, on his or her back, in a safe crib—every time.

Infant safe sleep deaths are preventable, and we are all responsible for ensuring parents and caregivers are aware of the danger to their child when they do not create a safe sleeping environment.”

Under the program, organizations and individuals may apply for reimbursement of up to 25 percent of construction costs for portions of projects that improve water quality.

County has awarded more than $5 million to 88 projects such as permeable paver parking lots, green roofs and native vegetation, with approximately $300,000 awarded annually.

“Although these grants represent a small percentage of funding, communities can leverage them to secure state and federal funding.

Last year alone, we awarded funding to six recipients with projects

totaling nearly $20 million,” added Zay. The WQIP grant webpage also includes past projects and common water quality enhancement practices, as well as guidance on applying for the WQIP grant.

Nashville coming to Elmhurst American Legion Inaugural Nashville Songwriter Fundraiser coming Oct. 30 The Elmhurst American Legion THB Post #187 has announced that it will host the Inaugural 2020 Nashville Songwriter Fundraiser on Friday, Oct. 30 from 7-10 p.m. at the Post home at 310 W. Butterfield Rd. in Elmhurst. Face-covering masks and social distancing required.

According to the Legion, Nashville hit songwriters are coming for a special benefit filled with dozens of hit songs Nashville-style from the writers themselves. The evening’s special guests include Steve Bogard

and Jason Sever, who have written songs performed by George Strait, Dustin Lynch, Dylan Scott, Tim McGraw, Martina McBride, Dierks Bentley, Gary Allen, Rascal Flatts, Luke Bryan and many others. Come out and hear the stories behind the songs.

Guest speaker from Pittsburgh to give 3 lectures at St. Demetrios

In 2019, 108 infants in Illinois under the age of 1 died as a result of being put to sleep unsafely; 87 were found in locations other than a crib, bassinet or ‘pack and play;’ 76 were found in positions other than on their back; and 71 were co-sleeping with another individual at the time of death.

Infants sleep safest alone in a crib with a firm mattress and tightly fitted sheet. The crib should be free of pillows, blankets, bumper pads, stuffed animals and toys. Infants should never be placed on an adult bed or couch to sleep.

If parents of young children are traveling, they should call ahead to make sure their accommodations include a crib or bring a ‘pack and play’ to their hotel or relatives’ residence if one is not available.

The chairman of the Special Investigating Committee probing Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan’s alleged role in a bribery scheme said Oct. 6 that he will delay any further meetings of that panel until after the Nov. 3 general election.

“The committee will meet again in person on Nov. 5 in Springfield—without the backdrop of a political campaign,” Rep. Emanuel “Chris” Welch, D-Hillside, said in a statement.

That statement, which came exactly four weeks before the Nov. 3 general election, infuriated Republicans on the panel who accused Welch of stonewalling the investigation in order to protect the powerful Democratic speaker.

“Chairman Welch’s decision is an utter insult to the people of Illinois who want and deserve the truth,” Rep. Deanne Mazzochi, R-Elmhurst, said during a virtual news conference later in the day. “Chairman Welch has now become Chairman Squelch.”

Madigan, a Chicago Democrat who has served as speaker of the House for all but two years since 1983, was implicated in a bribery scheme in July when officials at Commonwealth Edison, the state’s largest electric utility, admitted to federal prosecutors that over a period of nine years, they handed out no-work jobs and lobbying contracts to close associates of Madigan as part of a concerted effort to curry his favor for legislation that benefitted the company.

Madigan has not been charged and has denied any wrongdoing, saying that all he did was recommend people for jobs.\ Regardless, Republicans in the House, led by Minority Leader Jim Durkin of Western Springs, filed a petition to launch a disciplinary process on the grounds that Madigan may have engaged in “conduct unbecoming to a legislator or which constitutes a breach of public trust.” Under House rules, that charge could lead to disciplinary action, up to and including expulsion from the House.

The special committee last met on Tuesday, Sept. 29, and heard testimony from ComEd Executive Vice President of Compliance and Audit David Glockner who said he could not specifically

confirm whether the company’s actions had, in fact, influenced Madigan or whether Madigan was even aware of its intent to influence him.

Also during that meeting, Republicans on the panel sought to issue subpoenas to multiple other potential witnesses who had declined requests to testify voluntarily, including Madigan.

Welch, however, ruled that request out of order, calling it “premature.”

Since then, Democrats and Republicans have engaged in back-and-forth criticism of one another, with Welch accusing Republicans of trying to use the hearings for “political theater,” while Republicans have accused Welch of stonewalling the process in order to protect the speaker politically.

“At every step of this process, our cooperation has been accompanied

with the proviso that we will not allow this committee to be used as a stage for political theater – an admonishment our Republican colleagues appear to have taken more as a challenge than as a reflection of this committee’s serious work,” Welch said in a statement.

Asked via email how he distinguishes between political theater and a legitimate request for relevant information, Welch replied: “The (Special Investigating Committee) convening on Nov. 5, 2020 in the Capitol, after the election, removes this process from the backdrop of an election where two members of the committee are in the middle of contested political campaigns.”

That was a reference to two of the GOP committee members, Mazzochi and Rep. Grant Wehrli, of Naperville.

Earlier Oct. 6, Rep. Tom Demmer, R-Dixon, the ranking Republican on the special committee, released a statement noting that Welch, in lieu of issuing subpoenas for testimony, had sent a letter to ComEd seeking what Demmer called a “data dump” of all communications over the last decade between ComEd, its parent company Exelon, “and any staff member, employee, contractor, or consultant” of former Govs.

Pat Quinn and Bruce Rauner, current Gov. JB Pritzker, former Senate President John Cullerton, current Senate President Don Harmon, Speaker Madigan and other current and former Republican state lawmakers.

“This request involves hundreds of people and could take months for ComEd to respond,” Demmer said in the statement.

Fenton is distributing free meal bundles twice per week to anyone age 18 and younger (or their parents). The food is free of charge and can be picked up using Fenton’s bus lane at any time between 8:30 and 10 a.m. or 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on either day. Tuesdays will consist of three breakfasts and three lunches. Thursdays will consist of four breakfasts and four lunches. For those who cannot make it during the daytime hours, there will also be a 4 to 6 p.m. distribution on Tuesdays only.

Mazzochi to host ‘COVID in Flu Season’ webinar As the public and public health communities brace for a possible wintertime resurgence of COVID-19, State Representative Deanne Mazzochi (R-Elmhurst) is hosting an informational webinar for district residents.

The webinar will feature a discussion between Rep. Mazzochi and doctors from AMITA Health in Hinsdale who will discuss what you need to be aware of and precautions to take as flu season ramps up. Rep. Mazzochi, as a scientist who has been monitoring the progress of the possible COVID-19 vaccines, will also give an update on the latest clinical trial data.

This will be highly informative for residents concerned about

what the changing season will mean for COVID’s spread.”

Durkin calls on Democrats to demand Madigan answer questions or resign GOP worries delay tactics will thwart investigation

During a virtual news conference, Minority Leader Jim Durkin, of Western Springs, openly accused the investigating committee’s chairman, Hillside Democrat Emanuel “Chris” Welch, of deliberately stalling the investigation until after the Nov. 3 election, a move that Republicans warn could thwart the entire investigation.

“There is one person who is in charge, and that is Gov. Pritzker, and he is the leader of the state Democratic Party,” Durkin said. “I call on him to immediately demand those answers he has been requesting from Speaker Madigan or demand that he resign immediately.”

Durkin is one of three House Republicans who filed a petition calling for the investigation after Madigan was implicated in a bribery scheme involving utility giant Commonwealth Edison. In a deferred prosecution agreement filed in federal court in July, ComEd officials admitted that, over a nine-year period, they awarded no-work jobs and lobbying contracts to Madigan’s close associates in order to curry his favor for

legislation that benefitted the company.

Republicans argue that Welch, by postponing any further hearings until after the election, has put the investigating committee under a severe time constraint. That’s because under House rules, all committees are automatically dissolved when the General Assembly adjourns its biennial session, which is currently scheduled to happen in January.

That means Republicans would have to petition again for a new committee after lawmakers convene in January for the start of the 102nd General Assembly if they want the investigation to continue.

Welch has said he postponed further hearings because he did not want the investigation to be used as “political theater” leading up to the election. As evidence of that, he pointed to the fact that two Republican committee members—Reps.

Deanne Mazzochi of Elmhurst and Grant Wehrli of Naperville—called out their Democratic challengers in a news conference this week, demanding they state publicly whether or not they would vote for Madigan

for another term as speaker if they are elected.

But Durkin responded Oct. 8 by insisting the investigation is not political.

“This isn’t politics. This is one of the most serious scandals that we’ve ever experienced in Illinois, and it’s just going to get larger,” he said. “It has nothing to do with politics. And it’s unfortunate that the Democrats look at this as politics.”

Madigan himself has not been charged in the bribery scheme and he has denied any wrongdoing. On Friday, Sept. 25, he issued a letter saying he would not testify before the investigating committee, again asserting that all he did was recommend some people for jobs at the company.

Days later, on Sept. 30, Pritzker said during a virtual news conference that he thought Madigan should testify.

“I strongly believe that the speaker should take any opportunity, and this is one, to present answers to the questions that I think all of us have,” Pritzker said.

That being said, there is a legislative process underway and as a co-equal branch of government, members of the General Assembly have used this process before and they are capable of managing it on their own.”

In addition to delaying any further hearings until after the election, Republicans have also complained that Welch is stalling the process by requesting what they call a “data dump” from ComEd, including records of all communications between the company and state officials—including former governors—over the past 10 years.

Republicans say the request could take months to fulfill, and Durkin called it “a fishing expedition” that was irrelevant to the work of the special committee.

“The committee’s charge is to investigate Speaker Madigan in his role with the deferred prosecution agreement,” Durkin said.

Mazzochi seeks to preserve all of Graue Mill State Representative Deanne Mazzochi (R-Elmhurst) recently filed legislation inspired by local residents who united to defend a DuPage County historical staple, Graue Mill.

The Graue Mill on Salt Creek in Oak Brook was a water-powered grist mill built in 1852. It is now part of a museum campus that includes the original Frederick Graue House, the Mill and the dam on Salt Creek, all owned by the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County and operated by a nonprofit preservationist group.

Recently efforts have been revived to remove the Graue Mill dam, which is essential to the portrayal of the history of the Mill.

According to Bonnie Sartore, President of the Graue Mill & Museum board, the group licensed to operate the Mill & Museum on behalf of the Forest Preserve District, the “Mill is an Illinois Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark, honored as such in 1981 by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.” They recognized that Graue Mill uniquely represents “original engineering features of the mill in the mid-19th century.” The then water-powered mill mechanism introduced the modern industrial era to this part of the country. Sartore explained that the “water impounded by the dam is what provided the power for those early settlers to operate their mill.”

Mazzochi reiterated that when it comes to preserving the area’s history, “the dam and accompanying waterfall is a vital part of the history we are striving to preserve; the local history we are eager to teach our children.”

Mazzochi emphasized that the “Mill is one of just three authenticated stops on the Underground Railroad. The roar of the water overtopping the dam is an important part of the annual theatrical production re-enacted on the Mill grounds each year. It is an incredible way for our residents, young and old alike, to learn about that important part of our history.”

Mazzochi’s legislation, House Bill 5836, seeks to continue the work of preserving the mill and all of its surrounding grounds and historical components. The legislation was prepared in response to proposals before the Forest Preserve to destroy the existing dam. The legislation forbids the reduction, demolition, or removal of any structures associated with the mill and the dam without the approval of an oversight board that includes representation from the surrounding towns and historical society.

“With their recent petition, the community has made it clear they want the mill preserved as it is,” Mazzochi continued. “It should be left as it is for future generations to enjoy it, and learn from it as we have. And if any changes need to be made, any solution needs to account for all of our neighborhood stakeholders, because altering this history can have irrevocable downstream consequences.”

As of 8 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 11, there were 19,269 total cases among DuPage County residents, including 583 deaths. Since Saturday, there were 145 new cases and four deaths related to COVID-19 reported, two females in their 70s and two females in their 90s.

EEHealth: Does your child have COVID-19, flu, cold or something else?

Flu season will begin soon. Children will get sick just like they always have, but this year is different since the coronavirus is also circulating.

“Since COVID-19 symptoms overlap with symptoms of other common illnesses like colds or the flu, kids with symptoms of COVID-19 may actually be ill with something else,” said Uzma Muneer, DO, a board-certified pediatrician at Elmhurst Clinic. “In typical circumstances, it’s common for young children to have up to eight respiratory illnesses, or colds, every year.”

Unfortunately, there is no symptom or set of symptoms that only occurs in children diagnosed with COVID-19. So, if a child gets sick this fall or winter, how can parents

rule out COVID-19?

In a common cold, children may have: • Cough • Sore throat • Fatigue • Congestion or runny nose • Muscle or body aches With a common cold, children likely will not have: • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing • Nausea or vomiting • Diarrhea In children, fever has been the most frequently reported symptom of COVID-19. Other symptoms of COVID-19 in children may include cough, fatigue, headache, nasal congestion, loss of taste or smell, sore throat, shortness of breath or diffi-

culty breathing, muscle aches, gastrointestinal issues, nausea or vomiting, or poor appetite.

A fever could also be a sign of strep throat or the flu. A cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, sore throat or nasal congestion may be present in children with chronic conditions like asthma or allergies.

Parents worry about multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), but this illness, although serious, is not common. Symptoms of MIS-C include a persistent, prolonged fever, skin rash, red eyes, lips and tongue, and swollen hands and feet.

Scientists are still learning how the virus spreads and impacts children. Findings suggest children

are less likely to get COVID-19 than adults, and if they do contract COVID-19, they generally have less serious illness than adults.

There are children who are infected with the coronavirus and don’t develop any symptoms. These children can spread the virus to others who are at risk of complications.

Families should continue taking precautions to limit exposures, including wearing masks in public, frequent handwashing and physical distancing.

“You know your child best. Let your child’s doctor know if your child has a fever, is lethargic, won’t drink fluids, has any difficulty in breathing or has any other symptoms that concern you,” says Dr. Muneer. “When in doubt, call the

It’s important for children to have regular wellness check-ups with their doctors and stay up-to-date with all recommended vaccinations, especially the flu shot this season.

Reader offers ‘logical cynics guide’

1. We Illinois residents are in hot water in a debt-ridden state.

2. Politicians of both parties, over the decades, put Illinois in debt with short-sighted decisions.

3. Cuts to solve the debt problem will be scalding and painful.

4. Illinois taxes will inevitably go up – somehow.

5. Politicians can raise the Flat Tax on everybody right now or next year.

6. Poor and middle- income people will suffer more from a raise in the Flat Tax than a raise in the graduated tax.

7. Other tax increases (property, sales, alcohol, tobacco, gambling) will affect low-income people more than high-income people.

8. The graduated tax is the only way that high-income people will pay more than others to bail Illinois out of hot water.

9. Like the proverbial frog in the heating water pot, some Illinois folks will inevitably hop off to Southern climes to trade sweatier summers for IL freezing winters.

Many voters, like me, will choose the Fair Tax hoping that the rich will take some of the heat.

Willowbrook golf teams wrap up season at regional events Warriors take seventh in boys competition; girls team finishes sixth

The Willowbrook boys and girls golf teams completed their 2020 seasons at last week’s IHSA regional events at Glendale Lakes Golf Club in Glendale Heights.

Willowbrook’s boys team played in the nine-team Class 3A Glenbard East Regional at Glendale Lakes on Oct. 6. The Warriors placed seventh in the event’s team standings with their score of 360. Hinsdale Central won the regional’s team title with its score of 295. Glenbard West (304) placed second. Those two teams advanced to this week’s Oswego Sectional.

Senior John Donovan and sophomore Brett Vandergrift led Willowbrook’s regional lineup. Both Warriors posted 18-hole scores of 86 on the par71 course. Senior Andrew Rugg fired a 93, while sophomore Nick Chivilo shot a 95. Senior Nick Cipriano (100)

and junior Dominic Faillo (105) rounded out the Warriors’ regional squad.

The regional’s top four individuals who weren’t members of sectional-qualifying teams advanced to the sectional as individuals. Two players from Downers Grove North and two players from Downers Grove South earned those individual sectional berths. The individual qualifiers posted scores of 74, 75, 81 and 81.

Willowbrook’s girls team played in the 10-team Class 2A Glenbard East Regional at Glendale Lakes Golf Club on Oct. 7.

The Warriors earned a sixth-place finish in the team standings with their score of 375. Hinsdale Central won the regional title with its score of 306.

Naperville North (334) placed second.

Those two teams advanced to this week’s Sandburg Sectional in Orland Park.

Junior Emma Rattana posted the Willowbrook girls golf team’s best individual score at last week’s IHSA Class 2A Glenbard East Regional at Glendale Lakes Golf Club in Glendale Heights. Rattana shot an 18-hole score of 88 on the par-71 course to lead the Warriors to a sixth-place finish in the team-standings of the 10-team event. Willowbrook completed its 2020 season at last week’s event. The regional’s top two teams—Hinsdale Central and Naperville North—advanced to this week’s Sandburg Sectional. The regional’s top four players from teams that didn’t qualify for the sectional earned individual berths in the sectional. Rattana wound up a couple of shots short of her third straight sectional appearance. The four players from the Glenbard East Regional who advanced to the sectional as individuals shot rounds of 76, 82, 85 and 86.

On Thursday, Oct.1, Elmhurst University welcomed Olympic gold and silver medalist Laurie Hernandez to present this year’s Roland Quest Lecture where she discussed her experience as an Olympic gymnast, her Latin heritage, social equality, and mental health awareness.

Hernandez’s dream of wanting to go to the Olympics began at the age of 5 after watching gymnast Nastia Liukin, Shawn Johnson, and Carly Patterson compete in Nationals. After starting her journey in level four gymnastics at 6 years old, there were a handful of key moments throughout her career that separated her from the rest.

By 8 years old, she was the number one strongest kid in the country after testing her skills at the USA gymnastics’ Talent Opportunity Program known as TOPS. At 9 years old, she had the opportunity to go to developmental camp, a path that would take her to the Olympics.

After qualifying for classics (pre-nationals), she made elite nationals in 2012, placing 22nd out of 23 girls.

With rigorous training, hard work, and determination, Hernandez went on to make elite nationals again in 2013, placing second and moving up 20 places in just over a one-year span.

career threatening injuries that put a halt to her career success -- a true turning point in her career. With strength and resilience, Hernandez came back from her injuries in 2015, making junior national championships, where she won first place.

Later that year, she set on to compete in international competitions in Italy and in Japan, winning both of those as well.

After competing in senior national championships, Hernandez qualified for the Olympic trials in 2016 -- another defining moment in her career.

Out of only 13 girls who competed, she placed in the top five.

In 2016, Hernandez’s life changed when she was chosen to be a part of the U.S. Olympic gymnastics team, one of only a handful of Latinas (with Tracee Talavera, Annia Hatch, and Kyla Ross) to represent the U.S. in more than 30 years, since 1936.

Gymnastics is a complete mental game, and for someone who struggles from anxiety herself, “Being able to openly talk about [mental health] and to rip the stigma away and to pull away the taboo, has been such a big deal,” she said.

“How are we supposed to help and provide resources over a conversation that’s hushed and that’s talked about in whispers.”

Since competing as a member of the “Final Five” United States women’s gymnastics team at the 2016 Rio Olympics, where she won gold and silver, Hernandez has found continued success as a competitive dancer, author, and fierce mental health advocate. Now in 2020, she is currently training for the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo after taking a two-year break.

Sharing wisdom along the way For a sport that has given her so much, Hernandez says she has remained humble and grateful throughout her journey. To Hernandez, the impact that she has made on others and the safe space that she has created through her platform is far greater than any Olympic win. It’s allowed for open conversations about mental health to come to the forefront.

By sharing her journey to gold and beyond, along with her fair share of struggles and triumph, Hernandez hopes to inspire, motivate, and make you believe that dreams can come true. Just as they have for her, since the age of 16.

“The biggest thing is that when things get hard, it doesn’t mean you stop or quit,” she said. “I have thought about quitting multiple times but that was never the answer, it never gave me that fulfilling feeling.”

She knew it was not going to happen overnight.

“The end goal of anything you do isn’t going to be happiness, it’s balance because it’s quite unrealistic to be happy all the time but the strive for that and the time that you invest to be balanced is so worth it,” Hernandez said. “You are the greatest project that you will ever work on.

So, remember that the journey is kind of the fun part. Of course, you want to reach the destination, but if the journey’s not fun, then what’s the point?”
