Villa Park man charged with robbing bank in Lombard FBI: Suspect duct-taped sticks of Airborne Troop Parachute fireworks around his waist that looked like a bomb

A Villa Park man has been charged with robbery after the FBI said he walked into a West Suburban Bank location in Lombard on Oct. 4 with sticks of Airborne Troop Parachute fireworks reportedly duct-taped around his waist that looked like a bomb, took $800 that was handed to him by the branch manager, and left the bank.

Jason Bradley was taken into custody early that night at his home in

Villa Park. He remains in federal custody.

The FBI affidavit filed in U.S. District Court on Oct. 5 stated that video surveillance showed Bradley entering the bank, located in the 700 block of N. Main St., at approximately 1:17 p.m. wearing a red T-shirt, blue jeans, a gray zip-up hoodie and a blue medical face mask. He allegedly handed the branch manager a note saying, “I need everything from your drawer or WE ALL DIE!!!”

The FBI said Bradley then unzipped his sweatshirt, and revealed a device strapped to his waist that resembled a bomb. He gestured toward his waist to the device which appeared to be duct-taped and contained multiple white sticks and one red stick with black wires connected to them, according to the FBI. The branch manager handed the note to the teller behind the window because the teller was the only one with access to the money. The teller

pressed a distress button on the Teller Cash Recycler, which dispenses a predetermined amount of cash in specific denominations, and gave the suspect $800, the FBI said.

After being handed the money, the FBI said Bradley left the bank and entered a silver Chevrolet Cruze which was registered to him. The FBI said Bradley ditched his car in Elmhurst and walked back to his home.

According to the FBI, Bradley texted his wife a photo of him holding a

handful of cash with the text saying, “Nobody has been looking for me?

Nothing? Wtf.” At approximately 2 p.m., the FBI said it began conducting surveillance outside Bradley’s house in Villa Park. According to law enforcement officers on surveillance, they saw Bradley return to the house on foot at approximately 4:30 p.m. wearing the same red T-shirt and blue jeans

On Friday, Oct. 1, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held for GEM Car Wash’s brand-new facility located at 904 Irving Park Road in Bensenville.

Village President Frank DeSimone and GEM Car Wash Owner Mirjan Sadik cut the ceremonial red ribbon while joined by Gem Car Wash Staff, Community Development Commission members, Village Board members and staff, and representatives from the Bensenville Chamber of Commerce.

“This is a great addition to our Irving Park Road commercial corridor,” DeSimone said. “Not only does this facility look tremendous, but it provides residents with another great option to get their cars washed in Bensenville. We are excited to welcome GEM Car Wash to the community.”

Cantigny Park visitors have something new and thought-provoking to check out during their next visit.

Four DuPage nonprofit agencies, selected by Cantigny Horticulture, have created a themed “CAREcrow” display outside the park’s Visitors Center.

“This is a seasonal twist on the popular Community Trees display inside the Robert R. McCormick House in December,” said Liz Omura, senior horticulturist. “With the mansion still under renovation, the trees program is not possible this year. So instead, the CAREcrows add something fun and educational for our visitors while allowing us to continue supporting local nonprofits that are doing important work in our neighborhoods.”

CAREcrow creators each receive a $1,000 grant from the Robert R. McCormick Foundation. They also collect 100 percent of optional donations made by Cantigny Park visitors, who are encouraged to vote for their favorite CAREcrow display.

The agency gathering the most votes receives an additional $1,000.

The four organizations described below were chosen for their commitments to environmental issues and sustainability, alleviating hunger, and building self-sufficiency in our communities. Cantigny is aligned with their goals and proud to support them.

State’s Attorney Berlin partners with DuPage Legal Aid to assist victims of domestic violence DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin has announced that his office has partnered with DuPage Legal Aid in an effort to further aid victims of domestic violence and their families.

In a recent ceremony held at Berlin’s office, Clerk of the Circuit Court Candice Adams swore in Executive Director Cecilia Najera and Ann Russell, both attorneys with DuPage Legal Aid, to serve as special assistant state’s attorneys to assist the office’s Victim Services and Child Support units.

Presently, the state’s attorney’s office assists victims of domestic violence in obtaining a protective order against an alleged abuser. The protective orders however, are only enforceable for a limited time and do not address any long-term issues that may arise, particularly if children or other household members are involved.

If there are children involved, the office’s Child Support Unit, in conjunction with the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services, works to obtain financial support from the non-custodial parent. These court-enforced child support orders not only ensure financial support for the child, but also provide for further assistance if needed.

This new partnership will better allow the state’s attorney’s office to further assist victims with non-monetary issues covered by the court’s order by providing the necessary legal guidance victims may need to make responsible

decisions.

“My office remains committed to utilizing any and all resources at our disposal to assist victims of domestic violence who are struggling to raise their children without any support, monetarily or otherwise, from an absent parent,” Berlin said. “With this new partnership and the nearly thirty years of cumulative expertise offered

by Cecilia and Ann, we are now extremely well-positioned to further assist those in need in addressing custody, health, education and other longterm issues involving their children.

“I would like to thank DuPage Legal Aid as well as Chief Judge Kenneth Popejoy and his office for their work in helping us create a seamless, more comprehensive approach to assisting victims of domestic violence and their families.”

“The judicial system can be intimidating and confusing at times,” Popejoy said. “This collaboration between the state’s attorney’s office and DuPage Legal Aid will provide a tremendous amount of help to all involved to better understand their rights as well as responsibilities in cases that affect DuPage County families.”

“DuPage Legal Aid is excited to expand the services that we already provide in civil order of protection cases to individuals seeking criminal protective orders,” Najera said. “We are looking forward to serving and helping domestic violence survivors by working side by side with State’s Attorney Berlin

The FBI said Bradley went inside the house, and at approximately 6:40 p.m., exited the house and sat on the front steps to smoke a cigarette. Bradley was then taken into custody. According to the FBI, law enforcement searched Bradley pursuant to his arrest and found approximately $747 on his person.

The FBI said Bradley’s wife signed a written consent form authorizing a search of the house, of which she is the sole owner, and also forwarded the texts from Bradley.

According to the FBI, Bradley’s wife told the agency that at around

5:45 p.m., Bradley had called her and told her he had robbed a bank and ditched his car in Elmhurst.

The FBI said his wife stated that he told her he strapped fireworks to his chest, handed a note to the teller and then texted her the picture of him holding the wad of cash.

The FBI said a red shirt that appeared to be the one worn during the course of the alleged robbery, fireworks wrappers, a notepad consistent with the demand note, and a roll of duct tape were recovered upon searching the home.

The FBI also said it recovered Bradley’s vehicle in the area of the 100 block of N. Walnut St. in Elmhurst.

“Every year we like to find new ways to invite our alumni and their children back on campus for a fun time,” said President Jim Segredo, or “Gomez.” “Last year’s event was

such a success, so there was no hesitation when making the decision to do it again. It’s great to have an opportunity to reconnect with our alumni and their children and create these special memories!”

Addison Library presents its ‘Superfans’ Thanks to library, reader finds research materials, oldie films, more

(Editor’s note: Today the Addison Independent and the Addison Public Library brings the third in a series of stories about patrons of the Addison Public Library who are known as ‘Superfans.’ This effort is to spotlight Library Card Sign-up Month.

More will appear in future editions of the Independent.)

Mary Ann Spina is an avid reader who knows firsthand that the library is more than just a building full of books.

“I think the library is one of the best things we have in Addison,” said Spina. “Even if you’re not a reader, there’s so much here, there’s such a diversity of options that you’d be hard pressed to find someone who couldn’t find anything they wanted.”

Spina is often happy to browse the materials on shelf at the library, but she quickly figured out she could lean on library staff to find items that weren’t readily available to her.

“I’m the kind of reader who will go through everything an author has written,” said Spina.

“When I’m ready for the next book, I’ll go on the [library’s] website, see if the library has it.

If they don’t, I’ll put in a request.

“Sure enough, three or four days later, there it is! It’s terrific. I don’t know why people don’t use it more.”

Addison Public Library cardholders are able to use a service called Find More Illinois to search other Illinois-based libraries’ catalogs and borrow items from their collections if the item is not available at Addison. But the search isn’t just limited to Illinois; library staff can also search for items across the United States, even across the oceans.

Pictured is Mary Ann Spina, another Addison Library Superfan, who reminds the community that the library “is more than just a building full of books.” An avid reader of as many as three books at a time, she finds the library staff most helpful at finding materials unavailable in Addison at other libraries in the county, across the U.S., or even over the oceans.

“When I needed books for research, I could get basically anything I wanted from any library and have it show up [at Addison], even if it was some really esoteric strange thing,” Spina said. “I have several degrees in theology, some of that material I needed was not something the library would normally carry, but they got everything for me. I don’t think there was anything I wasn’t able to get.”

Spina reads so much that she sometimes reads as many as three books at the same time: one audiobook for cleaning the house, one audiobook for the car, and one print book for everywhere else in-between.

“My favorite way to use the library is books

on CD and playaways,” she said. “When I was working, I drove 60 miles round-trip per day, and books on CD transformed my life.

No matter how bad the traffic was, I’d say ‘It’s OK, I get to listen to my book!’ It made a drive that could have been horrendous much more bearable.”

When she retired, Spina joined the Friends of the Addison Public Library, a group of volunteers who raise money for the library and volunteer their time to be supportive. The Friends have backed a number of projects over the years, such as maintaining the Little Free Libraries at Community and Centennial Parks, donating prizes for summer reading programs, funding scholarships for the Career Online High School program, sponsoring library programs, purchasing replacement furniture, and attending community events like Rock n’ Wheels and the AddisonMedinah Shriners parade to help promote the library.

“One of the reasons I’m in the Friends is that I feel unbelievably fortunate that we live in a place that our library systems are so good that we can get anything through the library,” said Spina. “Yes, my taxes are paying for the library, but I figure the least I can do is donate and give back. I’ve borrowed so much and I get it all for free.”

One experience that has stuck with Spina was her quest to find an old movie from the 40s for her brother, who had been eager to watch the film again.

“The library didn’t have the film—it’s an oldie—but they got it for us all the same. My brother said, ‘That was really good, I can’t believe I got to see that again,’ and I said, ‘Courtesy of your library!’”

While most of Spina’s library visits involve

borrowing items from the shelves, she is also a big fan of library programs, especially cooking, art, and crafting programs. When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, Spina was relieved to find the library moved its programming online.

“I was impressed with how quickly the library was able to shift and offer so much over Zoom,” said Spina. “I did miss interacting with people, but there are some advantages [to virtual programs]. I could do programs in my pajamas and just relax and enjoy.”

Spina has lived in Addison since 1974 and has seen the library go through a lot of changes. With each new addition to the library’s services, Spina is delighted to find something new, whether it’s the film-to-digital converters, accessing Consumer Reports for free, and everything in-between.

“My parents were immigrants, so the fact that people can come and learn English as a second language, people can use the library and it’s open to everybody, is really amazing,” she said. “It really is miraculous when you think about it.”

Spina encourages everyone to come to the library to experience it for themselves and discover all the things their library card can do.

“If you haven’t been to the library, come.

If you don’t know what you’re looking for, ask one of the people that work there. Hook up with one of the Friends, we’d be happy to show you around! You can get everything you want from the library. Just come and explore.”

County accepting applications for water quality grant The DuPage County Stormwater Management Planning Committee voted Tuesday to begin accepting grant proposals for projects aimed at improving the quality of the County’s waterways.

In its 23rd year, the Water Quality Improvement Program (WQIP) grant provides funding to projects exhibiting a regional water quality benefit, including restoration and green infrastructure projects.

“We’ve seen some remarkable projects implemented throughout DuPage County over the years with the help of these grant funds, and I’m

so pleased we can offer them annually,” said DuPage County Stormwater Management Committee Chairman Jim Zay. “In addition to improving local waterways, these projects often reduce flooding, support beneficial wildlife and beautify communities.”

Under the program, organizations and individuals may apply for reimbursement of up to 25 percent of costs for projects that improve water quality. Over the grant program’s last two decades, DuPage County has awarded nearly $6 million to 96 projects such as permeable paver parking lots, green roofs and native vegeta-

Now in its fourth year, Everyone Thankful is an evening of food and fun designed to raise funds to provide Thanksgiving dinners for families in need. The event, to be held Saturday, Oct. 16 at 5 p.m., has as its centerpiece a team trivia contest, hosted by “Baig of Tricks Entertainment.” A full barbeque dinner and gift basket raffles round out the evening. Funds raised at this event will directly benefit the local community. In past years funds from the event have been able to feed over two hundred families annually.

Willowbrook senior Emma Rattana concluded her career with the Warriors’ girls golf team by playing in last week’s IHSA Class 2A Hinsdale South Sectional at the Village Greens of Woodridge. Rattana posted an 18-hole score of 84 on the par72 layout at the Oct. 4 sectional.

She fell a few strokes short of earning an individual berth into the IHSA Class 2A State Meet, which took place on Friday and Saturday. Rattana qualified for the sectional as an individual with her strong performance at the Glenbard East Regional on Sept. 30. She is pictured at the regional, where she turned in an 18-hole score of 84 on the par-71 course. Rattana was a four-year member of Willowbrook’s varsity team. As a freshman, she earned an individual berth in the 2018 IHSA Class 2A State Meet.

• A homeless man sitting on the street corner. (Why is he there where we all have to see him?)

• A homeless man sitting on the street corner begging for money.

(Really? He can’t get a job?)

The list could go on. It’s human nature. We have the tendency to judge everything. Honestly, it makes me a little sad; it took no time at all for me to come up with the above list. We judge others and ourselves so quickly and so harshly.

I’m trying to change this in myself. It isn’t easy, because judging is so ingrained into our human psyche. Instead of judging, I’m attempting empathy. It’s the whole “walk a day in their shoes” thing.

To start with, I’m walking a day in mine.

And in doing so, I’m trying to

change the inner voice that I’ve been listening to for far too long.

Not judging others starts with not judging ourselves. If we can learn to be easier on ourselves, then maybe we can also learn to give others the benefit of the doubt.

We are all walking the path of life, and we are all doing the best that we can with what we have. Realizing the truth of that one sentence can change outlooks; it can change lives.

When we judge ourselves or others, whom does it benefit?

In a word, no one.

Be kind. I’m in your corner. Find someone you care about and be in their corner and we’ll all make the world a better place — one judgment (or hopefully lack thereof) at a time.

What is a COVID-19 booster dose?

To date, 185 million people in the U.S. have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19. They received one of three vaccines: the twodose Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna mRNA vaccine, or the one-shot Janssen (J&J) vector vaccine. All three vaccines are protective against COVID-19.

In August, research found that immunocompromised people don’t always build the same level of immunity after two mRNA vaccine doses like those with healthy immune systems do.

A third dose was added to the initial vaccination series for individuals who are moderately to severely immunocompromised. The third shot applies to the mRNA vaccines and is recommended at least four weeks (28 days) after the second dose.

Now, what about a COVID-19 booster shot?

With many people several months out from being fully vaccinated, experts are recommending booster shots to stay protected. In September, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) amended the emergency use authorization (EUA) for the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine to allow for use of a single booster dose for certain adults at least six months after full vaccination with the Pfizer vaccine.

What is a booster dose and why is it needed?

“The Pfizer booster dose is essentially a third vaccine dose, the same vaccine used in the first two doses,” says Jonathan Pinsky, M.D., medical director of infection control and prevention at Edward Hospital.

“The booster is intended to ‘boost’ immunity, as research suggests that the level of virus-fighting antibodies starts to wane several months after getting the vaccine. Some research also suggests that with each new dose, the body makes higher quality antibodies that are better at blocking new variants.”

Who is eligible for a booster right now?

Currently, booster shots are only available for Pfizer vaccine recipients who completed their vaccination series at least 6 months ago and are: • Age 65 and older; • Age 18-and-older who live in long-term care settings; • Age 18-and-older who have underlying medical conditions; • Age 18-and-older who work or live in high-risk settings.

Regarding the criteria above, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends certain adults should get a booster shot, while others may get a booster shot considering their individual risks and benefits.

The CDC states: “With the delta variant’s dominance as the circulating strain and cases of COVID-19 increasing significantly across the United States, a booster shot will help strengthen protection against severe disease in those populations who are at high-risk for exposure to COVID-19 or the complications from severe disease.”

“As more data become available, additional populations may be recommended for a booster shot,” says Dr. Pinsky. While the booster shots are only for specific groups for now, everyone age 12 and older is recom-

mended to get vaccinated with the primary series. The COVID-19 vaccines approved and authorized in the United States continue to be effective at reducing the risk of severe disease, hospitalization and death.

What about a booster dose for the Moderna or Janssen (J&J) vaccines?

More data on the effectiveness and safety of Moderna and Janssen (J&J) booster shots are expected soon. It’s estimated that a booster shot will be needed for these products as well.

Law enforcement steps up efforts to fight online child exploitation

Raoul expects climb to 23 percent this year

State Attorney General Kwame Raoul has joined local and federal prosecutors to announce new efforts to combat a rise in online child exploitation in Illinois.

The efforts include greater outreach and education for parents and teachers, and a new mobile computer forensics unit that will be deployed throughout the state, he said.

“The pandemic has wreaked havoc on all of our lives, shuttering schools and businesses and isolating us and our children,” Raoul said at a news conference outside his office in Springfield. “Children have been affected in unprecedented ways.

During this time in particular of separation from their peers, they’ve turned to technology for schooling,

for connecting with old and new friends and alleviating the boredom and the social isolation this crisis has forced upon them. And child predators are there to try to take advantage of this.”

The efforts are being coordinated through the state’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, a federally funded project within the attorney general’s office that includes state, federal and local law enforcement agencies.

It receives tips from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, investigates child sexual exploitation crimes, trains law enforcement agencies, and provides online safety education to children and adults. The task force operates in all Illinois counties except Cook County, which has its own task force.

In 2018, Raoul said, the attorney general’s office managed over 3,300 cyber tips. That increased to 4,300 in 2019 and to 5,100 in 2020. This year, that number is expected to grow 23 percent, in part due to increased reporting and awareness by social media and apps.

“The threat is out there, and with our children’s increase in use of the internet for education, entertainment and social interaction, it is growing,” he said. “Police and prosecutors alone cannot stem the tide of rising sexual images of children on the internet. We all have a role to play.”

Neither Warrior qualifies for Class 3A state meet Willowbrook juniors Brett Vandergrift and Vince Guajardo both competed as individuals in last week’s IHSA Class 3A boys golf sectional at the Village Links of Glen Ellyn.

Vandergrift shot an 18-hole score of 83 on the par-72 course at the Oct. 4 sectional. Guajardo posted a score of 94. Neither of the Warriors qual2

ified for the IHSA Class 3A State Meet, which took place on Friday and Saturday in Bloomington.

Vandergrift and Guajardo earned the sectional berths with their solid performances at the recent IHSA Class 3A West Chicago Regional.

Vandergrift shot an 18-hole score of 80 at the Sept. 29 regional, while Guajardo fired an 83.
