Hospital awards ‘Run of the Month’ to first responders

Elmhurst Hospital’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) has awarded its “Run of the Month” for June, 2017 to the Bensenville Fire Protection District, Bensenville Police Department and Elmhurst Fire Department.

Fire and police personnel were recognized for their care of a patient who was in cardiac arrest outside the Jew-

el-Osco, 1127 S. York Rd. in Bensenville. Bensenville Police officers, who arrived first, performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and shocked him twice with their automated external defibrillator (AED). Upon their arrival, paramedics continued CPR and performed a third shock with the AED, after which the patient became

responsive.

The paramedics provided additional treatment in the ambulance while on the way to Elmhurst Hospital’s Emergency Department. The patient was admitted to Elmhurst Hospital and released ten days later.

reviews ambulance runs by pre-hospital providers and selects one to be recognized based on the following criteria: • Excellent communication from the field that resulted in the timely delivery of pertinent clinical information to the Elmhurst Hospital Emergency Department staff

Experience fall harvest at Kline Creek’s ‘Corn Harvest’ Visitors help with the harvest at free family events

Everyone’s invited to 1890s fun in the fields during the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County’s “Corn Harvest” Oct. 21 and 22 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Kline Creek Farm at 1N600 County Farm Road in West Chicago.

Visitors will hear the history of this valuable crop at “Corn College” before hitting the fields to pick some of the corn that will feed the cows and sheep over the winter at this living history farm. They can help load the wagons and may even help store the harvest in the corn crib.

Throughout the day, visitors can tour the 19th century farmhouse, where they can make corn-husk dolls, explore the barn, chicken coop, sheep fold and other buildings on the 200-acre farmstead. Volunteer

beekeepers will be on hand to answer questions in the honey house, and a blacksmith will demonstrate the tools and techniques of the trade in the wagon shed on Saturday from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Registration is not required for this program. Admission is free and activities are ongoing. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes for walking in the fields and be prepared to handle corn and stalks.

Montini Catholic’s Volley for the cure raises money for Young Survival Coalition

It was a sea of pink, pink and more pink on and off the volleyball court on Tuesday evening, Sept. 26 at Montini Catholic High School’s Annual Volley for the Cure event. Every year the girls team up to play for this very important cause.

Montini’s girls volleyball team members and their mothers sold baked goods before and during the game against Glenbard West. In a show of solidarity for the cause, Glenbard West’s teams purchased Montini’s “Fight On” t-shirts, which added a substantial amount to dollars earned for the cause.

Under the leadership of the team members, and with the assistance of dedicated parents and friends, the school surpassed their amount raised last year by netting more than $2,400 for breast cancer research. The Elmhurst Memorial Hospital (EMH) Foundation will host its Hope. Lives. Here. Luncheon on Wednesday, Oct. 25, 11 a.m. at the Butterfield Country Club, 2800 Midwest Rd. in Oak Brook. The annual event is held to increase awareness and raise funds for the Nancy W. Knowles Cancer Center and Elmhurst Hospital’s oncology services.

Proceeds from the luncheon are used to provide patients with educational materials to learn more about their specific needs, provide community screenings for early detection and prevention, and offer the latest therapies, such as the use of the DigniCap Scalp Cooling System to lessen hair loss during chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer.

Speakers at the luncheon include Christina Lavin, MS, LCGC, Genetic Counselor at the Nancy W. Knowles Cancer Center and Deborah Lindner, MD, FACOG, LCGC, Chief Medical Officer for Bright Pink, an organization with the mission of saving women’s lives from breast and ovarian cancer by empowering them to live proactively at a young age.

Groundbreaking ceremony held for Brunner & Lay On Oct. 2, Brunner & Lay held a groundbreaking ceremony at 300 Evergreen Street to celebrate the construction of their new 10,000 square foot office warehouse.

Brunner & Lay, Inc., a manufacturer of pneumatic and hydraulic tool accessories for the construction, mining, and demolition industries opened their original blacksmith shop in 1882.

The ceremony celebrated the construction of their newest location opening in Bensenville.

Representatives from the Village of Bensenville, the Bensenville Fire Protection District, Brunner & Lay and the Bensenville Chamber of Commerce were all present for the event. During the ceremony, Pete Gallagher, the President of the Bensenville Chamber of Commerce

and Village President Frank DeSimone welcomed Brunner & Lay to the Village.

“Being in business for 135 years is an amazing accomplishment.

We are happy to have you here in Bensenville and hope to have you here for another 135 years,” commented Village President Frank DeSimone.

Bensenville Park District seeks community input ATHS alumna, 2016 Miss Addison crowned Miss Mexican Heritage

The Bensenville Park District is conducting a series of focus group meetings and a community-wide interest and assessment survey to learn their present and future needs for Park District programs, facilities and open lands. The information from the meetings and surveys are to help prioritize projects and will assist the District to implement their Strategic Master Plan. “It’s a great opportunity for the community to be a part of the direction and the future of the Park District,” states Rich Johnson, Bensenville Park District Board President. “These results will play into the long-term planning schedule over the next ten years.”

A Community Workshop Meeting will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 18, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Oak Room at the Deer Grove Leisure Center located at 1000 W. Wood Street in Bensenville. The meeting will serve as focus group for the general public.

The Bensenville Park District’s Strategic Planning process focuses on developing a tactical and adap-

tive working plan linking the mission, vision, and core values with the District’s organization and policy making. “The Plan will ensure the operational goals fall within the parameters of our mission and vision,” states Joe Vallez, the District’s Park Operations Manager. “Our strategic initiatives focus on providing exceptional facilities and parks, along with being leaders in land preservation and open space. The initiatives also concentrate on the District’s provision of the very best in recreational opportunities for the community while being fiscally responsible and developing a team that will assure success and carry out the directive of the plan.”

Community members and stake holders are prompted to be active in the survey and utilize the public outreach tool which allows residents and stakeholders to provide feedback and comments.

If you had asked Addison Trail alumna Bianca Reyes (class of 2016) how she felt about pageants a year ago, you might not get the most favorable answer.

But her perspective and understanding of the pageant world have changed in the last year, as she was crowned Miss Addison in 2016 and Miss Mexican Heritage on Sept. 8. The Miss Mexican Heritage Scholarship Pageant Program is a fourmonth professional development program hosted by Mexican Cultural Center DuPage that ends in the Scholarship Pageant, where three participants are awarded a college scholarship.

“I never really wanted to be in pageants, because I thought all they cared about was physical looks,” Reyes said. “But I now know there’s so much more to these competitions. The judges are looking for more than beauty – they really care about the whole package, including academics and volunteer work.”

Having never participated in the Miss Mexican Heritage Scholarship Pageant before, Reyes was excited to share her culture with others. Contestants had to participate in workshops on various topics such as motivation, poise, financial independence, interview skills and politics and attend events

Reyes was not only crowned Queen, but she also won the “Best Essay,” “Best Dressed” and “Most Photogenic” titles. She focused on Jalisco, where her parents were born.

“I truly didn’t think I was going to win,” Reyes said. “I was really shocked, and I also was very excited, because I knew my parents were proud I showcased our heritage.

“Getting this title means a lot to me, as it’s an opportunity to represent Latinos. My parents have sacrificed a lot to be here, and I wanted to compete in this pageant to show when you put your mind to it, you can achieve anything – no matter your background.”

One of Reyes’ first duties as Queen was to participate in the Mexican Independence Day Festival on Sept. 16 and 17, which was presented by Mexican Cultural Center DuPage, with support from the City of West Chicago. Reyes said she looks forward to other events and opportunities she will get to experience.

• Angel G. Saavedra, 20, of Addison, was charged with failure to give aid or information, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, driving while license suspended, illegal use of an electronic device and no insurance near Armitage and Rohlwing at around 5:36 p.m.

• A 51-year-old Addison man was charged with domestic battery in the 1500 block of W. Holtz at around 8:40 p.m. Police said the suspect pushed a victim against a door, struck him several times and grabbed his right bicep.

Lake St. at around 5:58 p.m. Police said officers responded to a well-being call of a subject blocking the drive-thru at the restaurant. Vela was found to be DUI and illegally transporting open alcohol, according to police.

Villa Park Sept. 30 • A 24-year-old Chicago man was charged with two counts of domestic battery, battery and theft at around 11:06 a.m. Aug. 30. The original

complaint and arrest warrant was issued on Sept. 30.

• A juvenile suspect from Frankfort was charged with possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia near Route 83 and St. Charles at around 12:22 a.m.

In response to the recent Equifax data breach, State Rep. Deb Conroy (D-Villa Park) is co-sponsoring a bill that will prevent credit agencies from charging consumers fees to freeze their credit.

“Consumers who trusted the security of Equifax should not foot the bill for freezing their accounts due to the carelessness of a large corporation,” said Conroy. “Personal information of millions of Illinoisans was put at risk, and consumers need to be able to take steps to protect their identities and sensitive information.”

Equifax announced it had suffered a massive data breach of sensitive consumer information from May to July of this year, impacting as many as 143 million Americans. In Illinois, the breach is believed to have jeopardized the personal and financial

information of more than 5.4 million residents.

In order to protect oneself from identity theft, Attorney General Lisa Madigan is encouraging residents to consider placing a freeze on their credit and sign up for free credit reports.

House Bill 4095 would require agencies like Equifax to provide this service for free.

“The massive leak of information

by Equifax puts millions of Illinois residents at risk and should be taken very seriously,” Conroy said. “The Attorney General’s office has been working diligently to educate people on the steps they need to take to protect their personal information. I encourage all residents to seek out the resources and information put out by the Attorney General’s office.”

Home grocery delivery: Will it last?

It’s no secret; technology is changing the way we do things. I don’t trust myself to get dressed in the morning before checking my weather apps (I have three). And I’m not sure how I survived prior to having the find my family app at my fingertips.

But retailers are attempting to influence us in a new way (or at least new for me). They want us to purchase our groceries online. There are even incentives – free shipping or discounts, for instance. The largest retailers are in competition for our grocery dollars. Whoever wins us over first gets the prize – ka ching!

It’s an interesting concept: shopping for groceries without ever entering a store. I’m not sure how I feel about it. There are some things I simply prefer to pick out myself. Bananas. Steak. Bread. Ice cream. A cart.

But there are a slew of other products I buy over and over – week in, week out – that I’d be glad to have someone deliver to my door.

whim, I decided to try it. Why go to the store when you can have the store come to you?

During the process I discovered a few fun, useful and interesting facts I thought I’d share.

First, you should know your prices. Many items were the same price online as in the store, but some were not. Those cheap packs of noodles we all ate in college cost about 20 cents at the store, but nearly a dollar online. Chicken noodle soup, however, is the same both places.

Despite the advertisements claiming you can choose from millions

of items, not everything is available online for home delivery. You can purchase toilet paper, but not my preferred brand and type (I’m fussy that way). Some things still require a trip to aisle 12.

Shipping is free if you order a certain amount. When my cart didn’t total enough to get the free shipping I threw in a pack of paper towels (because my toilet paper wasn’t available).

I ordered a variety of random items: the aforementioned paper towels, shampoo, cat treats, potato chips, coffee, vitamins, sports drinks and assorted canned goods including soup, crab meat, tomato sauce and those spicy diced tomatoes.

The store guaranteed delivery in two days and came through on its promise. Delivery itself was surprising.

I was expecting one box – perhaps two. I got seven or maybe even more; I quit counting.

All my items arrived unscathed

and undamaged. Even the potato chips, which were wrapped on four sides cocoon-style in a sort of fitted cardboard box and then placed in a larger box. Cans of tomato sauce were placed end-to-end and wrapped in bubble wrap. Most boxes contained at least one (or more) inflated plastic packing pillows to cushion items.

Products packaged together were not what I would have logically expected.

The coffee arrived first – a day early – in a box with the vitamins and a string of plastic pillows. The rest of the order came the next day. One box contained most of the canned goods, along with the potato chips, which were remarkably uncrushed. The sports drinks came with the cat treats.

The shampoo came with one can of crabmeat.

Perhaps most surprising were the spicy tomatoes. I’d ordered four cans, what with it being football season – which is just another name for

spicy tomato and cheese dip season.

The cans arrived together, but not in the same box. Each one came in its own box, with a cushioned plastic packing pillow and nothing else. One 12-ounce can per box. The packaging and delivery had to cost more than the profit margin on the tomatoes, but I’m no grocery (or tomato) expert.

This was an experiment of sorts.

I’d probably do it again – with certain items, especially heavy or bulky ones (with apologies to delivery persons). But I’m not sure the concept itself will last – unless they figure out a way to pack items in a more streamlined manner.

Until then I’d advise doing one thing: invest in packing pillows.

Reader contemplates Las Vegas ‘act of evil’

Recently, we experienced an act of evil with the mass shooting in Las Vegas.

As we watched the details of the horror unfold, the people injured, and the deaths of the innocent, we were mortified and saddened.

Something happened though, as evil rained from the sky.

As people realized what was happening and ran for their lives, they helped their fellow man.

They helped each other over fences. My nephew was one of them.

They stopped to help those who were shot. They took off their shirts to minister to the wounds of their fellow

Some days the dark side of me says no one really seeks out wisdom these days, and folks would rather have fleeting fame on some reality show or tool around town in a Ferrari. And the “wise” part of me says it does not matter. What other people do or want or think about is none of my concern.

If I want to seek “wisdom,” that’s my doing. If I want to find it via history, comedy, or in the bottom of a Cracker Jack box, so be it.

We each are our own philosophers, and it never hurts to read the funnies.

County Health Department reminds it is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the DuPage County Health Department reminds women that early detection and regular testing are the best defenses against breast cancer.

The Health Department offers an important program to women who are underin-sured or have no health in-surance. The Illinois Breast and Cervical Cancer Pro-gram (IBCCP) offer free screenings to detect breast cancer or cervical cancer, both of which have better treatment results if detected early. Although IBCCP is available throughout Illinois, the Health Department only serves DuPage County resi-dents. For more information about IBCCP and enrollment forms, visit dupagehealth.org.

In 2016, the Health Department’s IBCCP served 657 clients, and provided 1,386 screenings, including breast exams, mammograms and pelvic/pap exams.

There are more than 3.1 million breast cancer survi-vors in the United States, including women being treated and those who have com-pleted treatment.

Women should be aware that: • Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women.

• Hispanic women have fewer mammograms than Caucasian women and African American women.

• Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Hispanic women.

• Women below the poverty level are less likely than women at higher incomes to have had a mammogram within the past two years.

Legislative leaders consider using state tax dollars for Obama museum Funds part of budget meant for road repairs

ILLINOIS NEWS NETWORK Democrat leaders in Springfield are signaling that they plan to propose using state road dollars to help build President Barack Obama’s museum in Chicago. Rauner said he supports both road spending and the library, but wouldn’t commit to the idea.

In the last couple days, both Senate President John Cullerton (D-Chicago) and House Speaker Michael Madigan (D-Chicago) said they’d support using state road funds on Obama’s presidential library that will be built over the next three years on Chicago’s south side.

The presidential center would need

to have one road demolished and others altered to be completed. On Thursday, Rauner said he supports more infrastructure spending as well as Obama’s library, but he didn’t say he’d commit public funds to the project.

“No. 1: I am very supportive of more investment in infrastructure,” Rauner said. “No. 2: I am very supportive of the Obama library.”

But Rauner said that he would like to see further government spending restraints before the state invests in tourism attractions such as the library.

A Chicago Tribune poll from 2014 showed that more than half of likely voters polled didn’t support state taxpayer funds being used on the Obama library project. Opposition

for using state funds on the project was 2-1 outside of Chicago.

State Rep. C.D. Davidsmeyer (R-Jacksonville) said Obama should be more than capable of raising that money himself.”It’s just amazing that one of the most prolific fundraisers in the history of politics can’t come up with the money to build their library,” he said.

Davidsmeyer, who is also vice president of Illinois Road Contractors Inc., says the state’s roads are in dire need of repair.

“I don’t think we’re in any situation to spend another penny somewhere else let alone $100 million,” he said.

Democrats pushed in 2014 to offer $100 million in road funds to persuade Obama’s foundation to put

the library in Chicago.

Rauner has long expressed support for the Obama library, but he has been skeptical of public funds going into it.Last month, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said that there should be a state commitment to helping build the Obama Presidential Center just as they have the Abraham Lincoln Museum in Springfield.

In 2014, then gubernatorial candidate Rauner said that the state has more pressing needs and thought that the Obama library should be privately funded like other presidential museums. In 2015, Rauner signed a bill that would make lawsuits against the building of the Obama Presidential Center and the now-relocated Lucas Museum more difficult.

The American Red Cross urges eligible donors of all races and ethnicities to give blood to help ensure a diverse blood supply for patients in need.

Some blood types are unique to certain racial and ethnic groups, so a diverse blood supply is important to meeting the medical needs of an increasingly diverse patient population.

Patients who need repeated transfusions must have blood that is matched very closely. Patients are less likely to have complications from blood donated by someone with a similar ethnicity.

Donors of all racial and ethnic backgrounds, as well as all blood types, are needed to help patients fight sickle cell disease, alpha thalassemia and other illnesses.

Illinois getting $2 million to buy anti-overdose drugs ILLINOIS NEWS NETWORK Some of Illinois’ smallest counties are in-line for their share of $2 million to fight overdose deaths.

Health Director Nirav Shah says the opioid crisis is one of the biggest public health and public safety threats in Illinois history.

Opioids, whether they be prescrip-

tions pills, heroin, or the synthetics of fentanyl or carfentanyl, are one of the state’s biggest killers.

“Last year in Illinois, there were approximately 1,900 opioid deaths,”

Shah explained. “That is more than twice the number of fatal car crashes, and one and a half times the number of homicides.”

Illinois is getting a grant to fight

overdose deaths in some of the state’s rural counties. Shah said most of the money will go to buy the anti-overdose drug naloxone for police officers and first responders.

Addison Trail Theatre Department to present Peter Pan Members of Addison Trail Theatre invite you to travel back in time to your childhood and join them as they fly to Neverland during the school’s upcoming fall play, “Peter Pan.” Performances will be held on Oct. 19, 20 and 21 at 7 p.m. at Addison Trail High School. There is also a 2 p.m. matinee performance on Oct. 21.

The play takes audience members on a magical journey to Neverland – a world filled with fantastical adventure. The story follows Peter Pan (played by senior Juan Jakoby Bracamontes) as he meets Wendy Moira Angela Darling (played by sophomore Dominika Zdanowicz) during a visit to the real world. Peter faces many obstacles in Neverland – including battling his nemesis Captain Hook (played by senior Nicolas Montgomery) – but discovers his biggest struggle is between never wanting to grow up and watching as Wendy continues to age.

“I want every individual who walks into the theatre to get the full impact of the play and to connect with the story,” Bracamontes said.

“Children and adults will enjoy this show, as there are many levels to the messages it shares.”

He added it has been a fun challenge to portray such a classic and well-known character.

“Everyone grew up with ‘Peter Pan,’ and there

are so many versions of the story,” Bracamontes said. “It’s an amazing honor to portray this character, and I know I have a responsibility to bring him to life on the stage.”

Zdanowicz said she remembers reading the book and watching the movie when she was younger, and she hopes this performance will provide a sense of wonderment for children and a nostalgic escape for adults.

Theatre Director Anna Jakubka said she chose “Peter Pan” at the request of the senior class.

Members of that group saw a performance of “Finding Neverland” on Broadway during a trip to New York two years ago and have wanted to do a similar show ever since. She said the school will use an adapted version by Jon Jory, from the novel by J.M. Barrie. In this version, the script allows for creative effects to provide the illusion of flying, including the use of a Star Curtain (a black curtain with LED lights to simulate stars). It also scripts Wendy as an only child.

Although the play is designed for children, Zdanowicz and Bracamontes said all ages will be entertained. “‘Peter Pan’ reminds us that even when we’re older, there will always be a part of us that has a sense of adventure and longs for the time of

childhood innocence,” they said. “We’re never too old to believe in a world of magic and dreams.”

On Oct. 3, eight Addison Trail students in English teacher Katie Inzinga’s creative writing class read their children’s books to two groups at Stone Elementary School.

To create their stories, the students analyzed published children’s books and interviewed kids ages 3 to 9 about their likes and hobbies. They then spent a few weeks drafting, editing and publishing their works based on that research. The goal was to have clear character development, a conflict to which young children could relate and a theme to help teach a valuable life lesson. Addison Trail art students helped illustrate the books.

The authors are sophomore Kayla Berns, junior Andrea Perez, senior Juan Jakoby Bracamontes, freshman Khayr Ahmed, sophomore Julie Zaborowski, sophomore Britney Galeana, junior Isea Cabrera and senior Nykolis Roldan. They read to fourth-graders in Stephanie Sorrentino’s class and students in Jennifer Fletcher’s class.

The adrenaline was pumping at Montini Catholic’s Duffy Memorial Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 24 as the school’s traditional Powder Puff Football Games kicked off the much anticipated Homecoming Week.

Each year the games serve a dual purpose of raising money for a designated cause. This year students voted to get a head start on collecting food and money for the school’s annual Golden Gobbler Food Drive.

Fans seeking an evening of powder puff entertainment were asked to either pay a ticket fee with all money earned donated toward the food drive, or to donate a canned good.

Willowbrook football team headed back to playoffs Warriors down Morton 56-6 in Week 7 action

It’s back to the playoffs for the Willowbrook football team.

The Warriors scored a recent 56-6 win over Morton in a Week 7 West Suburban Conference Gold Division game at Morton West Stadium in Berwyn.

The win moved Willowbrook to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in WSC Gold play. Not only did the Warriors remain atop the WSC Gold standings with two games to play, but they earned an automatic playoff berth with its sixth victory.

In the Morton contest, the Warriors gained 274 yards on the ground and had seven rushing touchdowns.

Jack Jessen ran nine times for 122 yards and scored two touchdowns.

Chris Diaz ran seven times for 72 yards and scored three touchdowns.

Franshun Jordan ran three times for 65 yards and scored a touchdown,

while John Taylor had a 10-yard touchdown run.

Taylor completed 5 of 6 passes for 88 yards. Chase Cavanagh also threw a 79-yard touchdown pass to CJ Harris. Sikander Zafar caught three passes for 56 yards.

Through seven contests, Willowbrook was averaging 308 rushing yards per game.

Taylor has completed 81 of 135 passes for 1,181 yards and eight touchdowns against only four interceptions.

Jessen has rushed for 1,277 yards on 180 carries and has 15 rushing

touchdowns. He’s averaging 182 yards per game on the ground and has six 100-yard rushing games.

Diaz has 373 rushing yards and six touchdowns, while Taylor has 305 rushing yards and three touchdowns.

Zafar has caught 25 passes for 428 yards and one touchdown. Jacob Entwistle has 18 catches for 212 yards and two touchdowns, while Diaz has 14 catches. Martique Barksdale has 15 catches for 188 yards and two touchdowns.

On defense, Jessen leads the way with 52 total tackles. Kevon Dob-

bins had 45 total tackles and three quarterback sacks. Entwistle and Christian Washington each have 37 tackles, while Nick Rushing has 36 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 quarterback sacks.

As a team, Willowbrook has 59.5 tackles for loss.

Scott Tumilty has a team-leading four interceptions, while his sophomore brother, Sam, has three interceptions that have been returned for a total of 119 yards.

Willowbrook returns to action Friday at home against Proviso East in another WSC Gold game.

Addison Trail’s Morris, Gagliano qualify for golf sectionals Blazers football team loses to Hinsdale South

Addison Trail junior Blaise Morris was the team’s lone sectional qualifier out of the recent Class 3A Elk Grove regional at Fox Run Golf Links in Elk Grove Village.

Morris shot an 83 to qualify as an individual. Addison Trail finished seventh as a team with a 362 score.

Morris competed earlier this week in the Class 3A New Trier sectional at Winnetka Golf Club for a chance to advance to the Class 3A state finals.

Senior Sara Gagliano was the team’s only individual to advance to the sectional round. She shot a 92 for 18 holes at Fox Run. Gagliano competed earlier this week in the Class 2A Wheaton Academy sectional at Pheasant Run in St. Charles for an opportunity to advance to the girls’ state finals tournament.

IC Catholic Prep football team steamrolls Wheaton Academy Knights secure playoff berth; set to defend state championship

Another game and another 50-point outburst by the IC Catholic Prep football team.

This time, the Knights were 59-7 winners on the road in West Chicago against Wheaton Academy in a Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division Saturday matinee game.

The win moved IC Catholic Prep to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in MSC Blue play. The Knights, the defending Class 3A state champions, now will officially be able to defend that crown after having earned an automatic playoff bid with its sixth victory of the season.

In the game against Wheaton Academy, quarterback CJ West completed nine passes for 150 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions.

Freshman Kyle Franklin continued his strong play. He ran 14 times for

214 yards and three touchdowns. He had a long run of 62 yards. Senior Lazerick Eatman had nine carries for 41 yards and a touchdown. The Knights ran for 310 yards on only 30 carries, averaging more than a first down per carry (10.3 yards).

Junior Jacob Lytton caught three passes for 58 yards and a score. Junior Sean Hipskind caught one pass for 54 yards and a touchdown, while junior Khali Saunders caught a nineyard scoring strike.

On defense, the Knights needed to make only 44 tackles in the game, led by sophomore Kevin Cooke and junior Kemon Reese who each had seven. Sophomore Kevin Akins had five tackles. Junior Declan Barney, Reese and Akins each had one quarterback sack. Those three sacks totaled 19 yards in losses.

The Knights also were in top form on the takeaway front, recovering

three fumbles. Saunders, Cooke and Barney each had a fumble recovery.

Reese had a forced fumble, while sophomore Koby Reed had a pass deflection.

Eatman had a kickoff return for 30 yards. Khalil Saunders had a twopoint rushing conversion.

On the season, Franklin is leading the Knights with 705 rushing yards and eight touchdowns, while Eatman has 663 rushing yards and 10 scores.

The Knights have run for 2,131 yards on 224 carries through seven games and are averaging 9.5 yards per carry.

Hipskind is tops on the team in touchdown catches with six. Khali Sanders has four, while West and Eatman have three each.

IC Catholic Prep returns to action Friday at home against Glenbard South in a MSC Blue game. The Knights and Raiders both are tied at 3-0 atop the conference standings.

Addison Trail football The Addison Trail football team lost 23-15 in Darien to Hinsdale South in a Week 7 West Suburban Conference Gold Division contest.

Addison Trail led 7-6 after the first quarter thanks to Jacob Grygo’s touchdown reception. Hinsdale South led 6-0 at one point.

However, Hinsdale South scored 10 points in the second quarter to take a 16-7 lead into halftime.

Both teams were scoreless in the

third quarter. Hinsdale South scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter to take a 23-7 lead. An Addison Trail touchdown and two-point conversion accounted for the final margin.

The loss dropped Addison Trail to 2-5 overall and 0-4 in WSC Gold Division action. The loss officially eliminated Addison Trail from playoff consideration.

Addison Trail, which has lost five games in a row, returns to action Friday at home when it hosts Morton in a Week 8 contest.

The Addison Trail boys soccer team has received numerous key contributions in recent weeks.

Senior forward Luis Saucedo had three goals in a recent four-game stretch. “Luis is really stepping up of late,” said Addison Trail coach Ryan Dini. “He is a senior forward who is finding ways to score. This is much-needed for us. We hope it continues for the rest of the regular season and into the playoffs.”

Also helping the Blazers on the scoring front are Melvin Mora, who had four goals through late last week out of his midfield position, and Mar-

tin Juarez who had two goals and two assists.

Addison Trail was 3-9-3 through its first 15 games of the season and had a 2-1 record in West Suburban Conference Gold Division play through its first three league games.

In recent action, Addison Trail lost 2-1 to Glenbard West and 2-1 to York.

The Blazers also lost a pair of 3-1 contests to Leyden (conference) and Neuqua Valley.

Overall, the Blazers continue to work on their offensive game. “Offense has been a struggle this year,” said Dini. “We have only scored two or more goals in three games this year (out of the first 15). We have lost a lot

of 2-1 games this season. Our inability to score goals has hurt us. We have moved some players around to try and find a spark on offense. We aren’t finishing like we have in years past.”

Dini has seen improvement in the corner-kick department. “Our set plays have improved as well on corner kicks so this will help get more goals on the board,” he said.

On the flipside, Dini has been quite pleased with the team’s defensive efforts. “Our defense has been pretty solid all year,” he said. “We have let up two or fewer goals in nine out of the 15 games. We are playing many top teams in the area and state so that is pretty impressive. Of our six de-

We just need to score more goals to get the job done.”

Other coaches have taken notice. I really like how he has competed to become the starter for us.”

The Willowbrook boys soccer team broke a streak it had been wanting to shed for a long time.

The Warriors recently scored a 4-3 West Suburban Conference Gold Division win against Downers Grove South on senior night. It was Willow-

brook’s first boys soccer win against Downers South in more than 15 years.

“It was our biggest win of the season,” said Willowbrook coach Ed DeLaCruz.

Senior transfer Efren Gomez had two goals in the game. Miguel Correa had a goal and an assist, while senior Patrick Florey tallied two assists. David Rizzo, a junior, had one goal.

Downers South scored first and then Willowbrook knotted it up at 1-1 with 30 seconds left in the first half.

Willowbrook came out in the second half and scored three unanswered

goals to go up 4-1.

“We were winning 4-1 and then got complacent thinking we won the game and Downers Grove South scored two goals in two minutes with five minutes left in the game,” DeLaCruz noted.

Willowbrook junior goalie Mario Giase made two key saves in the closing minutes.

“Mario made two ridiculous saves in the final two minutes to keep the lead and win the game,” said DeLaCruz.

DeLaCruz was thankful for the support the team received on senior night.

“The stadium was rocking with fans for senior night,” he said.

Through late last week Willowbrook was 5-10 overall.

“We have been playing better as of late with our injured players returning,” said DeLaCruz. “The bulk and middle of our schedule we were missing four starters, which is why we struggled.”

In other recent action, Willowbrook lost 2-1 to Addison Trail and defeated Proviso West 8-2.

Following up a strong showing at the recent West Suburban Conference Gold Division meet, the Willowbrook boys golf team turned in another good performance at the recent Class 3A Hinsdale South regional.

The Warriors qualified two golfers for sectional play at the regional held at par-72 Prairie Bluff Golf Club.

Joey Guthrie shot a 77 and Taylor Sarovich shot 80 to become the first Willowbrook boys golfers to advance to the sectional round since Doug Miceli did it in 2010.

Sophomore Logan Rattana narrowly missed making it into the

playoff for the final qualifying spot, shooting an 83.

As a team, the Warriors fired another season low, finishing with a 324. The Warriors took fifth place in the regional field. The top three teams advanced to the sectional.

Buddy Martens, a senior, added an 84 for the Warriors.

Guthrie and Sarovich advanced to the Class 3A sectional that was contested earlier this week at Glendale Lakes Golf Club.

Fenton girls volleyball team putting up impressive statistical numbers Miller sets school assist record against ICCP

The Fenton girls volleyball team has put up some impressive numbers in recent times.

In the Bison’s 25-23, 23-25, 26-24 Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division loss to IC Catholic Prep, Mackenzie Miller set the school record for assists in a single match with 26. Also in that contest, Julianna Krebasch had 14 kills, while Vicky Krzyszkowski had eight kills and Agata Kukielko had seven kills.

In other recent play, the Bison lost 25-18, 23-25, 25-13 to Illiana Christian in another MSC Blue match.

Through late last week, Fenton was 11-19 overall and 0-9 in conference play.

Through the team’s first 30 matches, Kukielko was leading the team with 50 aces. Krzyszkowski was the team-leader in kills with 150. Miller was the leader in assists with 359, while Krzyszkowski was tops in blocks with 40 and Kukielko was leading the team in digs with 118.

Fenton coach Kelly Kleidorfer has seen her team make progress on the offensive end of late. “The offense really has been clicking,” she said. “We are putting up stats that haven’t been seen with Fenton

volleyball in many years. We are executing at a pretty high rate right now. The best thing we are doing well right now is executing our offense at a very high level between our setters and middles.”

Fenton also is progressing on the defensive side of the net. “We are showing improvement in all of these areas most of the time,” said Kleidorfer of the team’s defense, blocking and passing skills. “We still have a few moments of not executing like we want, but for the most part we are playing good volleyball.”

Kleidorfer also cited recent strong play from Isa Lozada. “Isa has really stepped up lately,” she said.

“We promoted Noha Zaggoti, a sophomore, to be our second setter

and Isa has made a great transition to becoming a defensive specialist.

She spent the summer and the first month-plus of the season working on setting, but has quickly moved into a defensive-specialist role.”

Kleidorfer was thrilled with how the team competed against IC Catholic Prep. “I’m most impressed with the fight we showed in the ICCP match,” she said. “It is always tough to play them there and they always are a high-level team. We had our chances, but we came up just a little short.”

The Bison played Wheaton Academy earlier this week in a conference match and will host Glenbard South today in another MSC Blue match.

Fenton boys soccer team defeats St. Edward Bison girls crosscountry team third at Leyden invitational

The Fenton boys soccer team recorded a pair of big wins recently.

The Bison were 5-1 winners over a highly touted Elgin St. Edward team.

Angel Barriga had two goals for Fenton. Branny Salas, Darwin Medina and Fernando Arias each added a goal.

Fenton also downed Glenbard South 3-1 in Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division play. The win secured third place in the conference for the Bison.

In the Glenbard South win, Salas recorded two goals, while Barriga had one goal and two assists.

At Leyden, Jessica McCauley placed third individually. Charity Bullis was 12th at Leyden, while Ruth Kirkwood was 15th.

Bison coach Sarah McDougal pointed to her team’s competitive attitude, endurance and speed as three areas of improvement throughout the season. McDougal also has been impressed with the team’s top three runners and a strong freshman contingent that is “improving rapidly,” she said.

Some of those freshmen include Audrey Benitez, Lupita Honorato and Angelika Gasior. “They are realizing their potential,” said McDougal. “We have hope for future years with the freshmen gaining experience.”

Up next for the Bison is the Metro Suburban Conference meet on Saturday followed by regionals.

“We’re hopeful for postseason success at the IHSA level,” said McDougal.

Illinois blood donations climb in wake of Las Vegas shootings ILLINOIS NEWS NETWORK Illinoisans are responding this week to the mass shooting in Las Vegas that killed 59 and injured more than 500 others at a country music concert by helping bump up local blood donations by about 10 percent.

Local blood centers did not send any units of blood to Las Vegas in the wake of the shooting. However Kirby Winn, spokesperson Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center which runs Community Blood Services of Illinois and Central Illinois Community Blood Center, says he’s seen the community realize the importance of donations this week.

“Donors in our region know that

their donation is going to be used locally and isn’t being shipped to support patients in Las Vegas, but I think people do look for something they can do that can be helpful,” Winn said.

Winn says the centers have seen a 10 percent or more increase in people donating blood this week, with fewer “no shows” for donation appointments.

The donation increase could mean an additional 100 units a day, according to Winn.

“Our show rates are much higher now,” Winn said. “It’s that level of motivation -- the level of commitment to give blood seems to be higher.”
