ILLINOIS NEWS NETWORK In response to the epidemic of gun violence in Chicago, Illinois lawmakers passed a new law coming into effect next week that some say will help crack down on repeat gun offenders. Reform advocates argue that they’re missing the point.

Gov. Bruce Rauner signed into law new mandatory minimum sentences for people arrested more than once for gun crimes. The bill is seen as Springfield’s answer to rampant gun violence plaguing Chicago’s south and west sides. The new law requires at least seven years in prison for repeat gun offenders instead of three.

Republican Minority Leader Jim Durkin sponsored the bill. He admitted that it would not solve the problem, but it was a start.

“This is the start of something to stop this plague of violence which we pick up and read in the newspaper on a daily basis,” he said in June.

But Clark Neily, CATO Institute vice president of criminal justice, said putting more people behind bars for a longer period of time is not a move in the right direction.

“All you’re doing is locking people up for much longer periods of time,” he said.

“It’s very costly and has a terrible effect on their lives as well as their families and the people who depend on them.”

The best cure for crime, Neily said, is gainful employment.

“When people have work that they find meaningful, then they truly feel that they’re part of something,” he said.

Illinois has the highest unemployment rate in the Midwest and the highest black unemployment rate in the nation.

More than 3,500 people were shot in Chicago this year with over 600 dying.

Elmhurst College to host annual high school artwork showcase Schools include York, Willowbrook, Addison Trail

Elmhurst College will celebrate young artists and public school art programs from across the Chicago area when it hosts the 19th Annual High School Exhibition starting on Jan.13.

Every January, the entire space of the Founders Lounge in the Frick Center is hung from floor to ceiling with artwork created by students from 10 high schools. The exhibi-

tion will feature hundreds of paintings, prints, sculptures, videos and computer art, and works in other media.

“There are so many very talented high school students taking part in this exhibition,” said Suellen Rocca, director of exhibits at Elmhurst College, adding that each year an enormous crowd attends the reception for the participating artists.

Conroy, Raja to offer satellite office hours

Continuing the effort to remain accessible and bring constituent services to every part of her district, State Rep. Deb Conroy (D-Villa Park) is partnering with Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi to host a satellite office hours on Monday, Jan. 22 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Carol Stream Library located at 616 Hiawatha Dr. in Carol Stream.

“As your State Representative, I will continue to host mobile office hours to ensure that all residents have the opportunity to access our state constituent services and have their questions regarding state issues answered,” Conroy.

Conroy’s office will be available to answer questions about state issues and assist residents with issues with departments and agencies in the State of Illinois. A representative from Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi’s office will also be available for constituents who have questions about federal issues including Social Security, Medicare and immigration services.

surer’s office will be available to help residents search the state’s ICash system for unclaimed property owed to them by the state. The State Treasurer’s office holds $2.5 billion in unclaimed property, which can include checking and savings accounts, uncashed wage and payroll checks, uncashed stock dividends and stock certificates, insurance payments, utility deposits, customer deposits, accounts payable, credit balances, refund checks, money orders, traveler’s checks, mineral proceeds, court deposits, uncashed death benefit checks and life insurance proceeds.

“In addition to our constituent services, the Treasurer’s office will be joining us to provide access to ICash as well as a representative from Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi’s office,” Conroy said. “With all that is going on in Washington as well, we want to ensure all constituents have the opportunity to have their questions answered and have access to federal constituent services.”

An artists’ reception will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 17, from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

DuPage County and Will County leaders propose ban on sale of commercially bred animals in pet stores

DuPage County joined with Will County and Illinois State Senator Michael Connelly (R-Naperville) to call for a ban, in those counties, on the retail sale of animals obtained from commercial breeders, which can have lower health and welfare standards. Senator Connelly announced details of Senate Bill 2280 at a news conference at the Naperville Area Humane Society on Friday.

Senator Connelly’s legislation is the result of a joint effort between leaders in DuPage County, Will County, The Humane Society of the United States, The Puppy Mill Project and several other local animal advocacy groups. The bill would bring state laws regulating the retail sale of animals obtained from commercial breeders in line with similar ordinances already enacted in Chicago and Cook County to protect the consumer, improve animal welfare standards, encourage pet adoption and responsible breeding and bring about an end to animal cruelty for profit.

“Commercial breeding can be a sad and abusive industry,” said Sen. Connelly. “Not only will this bill help stop inhumane practices, but it will also encourage pet stores to partner with animal shelters and rescue organizations. This legislation will not make it illegal to breed pets. People will still be able to purchase an animal directly from a breeder.”

Representative David Olsen (R-Downers Grove) will be the sponsor of the bill in the state House of Representatives.

“The cruel practice of breeding animals on a

mass scale for retail sale with no regard for the health and welfare of the animals must stop,” said Representative Olson. “Senate Bill 2280 would improve animal care standards, encourage more pet adoptions and responsible breeding practices and protect consumers. Today, consumers are largely unaware of the inhumane treatment many animals are subjected to before they are sold.”

“DuPage County, Will County and our residents have seen past the lies told by the pet store owners who profit handsomely while misleading consumers and contributing to the needless suffering of animals in puppy mills and catteries.” said Brian Krajewski, Chairman of the DuPage County Animal Care and Control Committee.

“We stand with Cook County, Chicago, the growing number of suburban municipalities, and hundreds of other cities and counties across the nation who know, like we do, that there is no shortage of animals in need of homes and that businesses can be both successful and humane if they are willing to adapt.”

DuPage County Animal Care and Control is an open-admission shelter obligated by state statute to accept any animal surrendered to the facility, including sick and ill-tempered animals from puppy mills. Krajewski said passage of this bill would result in greatly enhanced consumer protections against large-scale breeders that breed for volume rather than animal health or temperament, and a decrease in animal homelessness, and public health and safety issues.

Conroy wants residents to be aware of heating center locations

State Rep. Deb Conroy (D-Villa Park) encourages residents to seek out designated heating centers throughout DuPage County and check in on elderly neighbors during the bitter cold.

“The weather has turned cold very quickly and it is important that residents are aware of the heating centers available throughout DuPage County as a resource for those in need,” she said. “I encourage residents to check in on seniors to make sure they are safe and reach out to anyone who

might be in need of these warming centers or extra assistance in this dangerous cold.”

Exposure to extended periods of cold can cause frostbite or hypothermia. Dozens of heating centers are available to residents of DuPage during these winter months. These centers include libraries, municipal buildings, police stations, and community centers. Residents should call ahead of time for hours, or contact Conroy’s office at 630-415-3520 for more information.

Frigid weather causes damage at Bensenville Public Library

Damage occurred when a water pipe burst between the ceiling and the roof of the Library building on Wednesday, Dec. 27. Library and school district staff acted quickly to turn off both the electricity and the water, and the Bensenville Fire Department responded to the alarm that sounded in the building. However, only the computer lab, which at the time of the incident was only occupied by one staff member, was immediately closed to the public. There was only a minor disruption to regular library services. Computers remained available for public use in the Children’s Department, which was entirely unaffected.

Bond set at $50,000 for Chicago woman charged with stealing vehicle in Elmhurst

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Elmhurst Chief of Police Michael Ruth announced last week that bond has been set for a Chicago woman accused of stealing a woman’s car from the driveway of an Elmhurst home. Jamesha McChristine, 19, of 7942 S. Langley, appeared in Bond Court recently where Judge Joseph Bugos set bond at $50,000 with 10% to apply.

It is alleged that on Wednesday, Dec. 20, at approximately 3 p.m., McChristine was in a vehicle traveling on Grantley in Elmhurst with

seven other people when she saw the victim exit her car and left the car running in the driveway. It is alleged that upon seeing this, McChristine got out of the car she was in and entered her victim’s car through a door that was not fully closed.

Allegedly, McChristine then drove away in the victim’s car and that the other seven individuals also fled the scene. The victim witnessed McChristine steal her vehicle and that she immediately contacted the Elmhurst Police Department. It is alleged that as she drove the stolen ve-

hicle, McChristine crashed the stolen vehicle into two parked cars in Elmhurst as well as a fence and landscaping owned by the city of Elmhurst.

McChristine was eventually apprehended following a car chase in Forest Park. It is further alleged while driving in Forest Park; McChristine crashed her vehicle into an apartment building and then attempted to flee on foot before being apprehended. The seven other individuals allegedly with McChristine were all apprehended and charged with misdemeanor offenses.

Man charged in alleged smash and grab from Bloomingdale Best Buy DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Bloomingdale Director of Public Safety Frank Giammarese, announced last week that bond has been set for one of several individuals accused of stealing merchandise in from Best Buy located in Bloomingdale.

Arthur Holmes, 35, of 720 E. 93rd Street, Chicago, appeared in Bond Court, where Judge Alex McGimpsey set bond at $100,000 with 10% to apply.

On Monday, Dec. 25, at approximately 4:30 a.m., Bloomingdale police officers responded to an alarm call at Best Buy. Upon their arrival, officers observed the front door and windows of the business completely smashed. It is alleged that at approximately 4:21 a.m. that morning, Holmes and several accomplices crashed their car into the Best Buy and, once inside, stole merchandise including a laptop computer and a gaming laptop. It is alleged that once police officers arrived, Holmes and his unknown accomplices fled the scene in two separate vehicles. It is further alleged that police officers began following one of the vehicles which had its license plate covered with a piece of cardboard. Following a brief chase, the vehicle ran out of gas at which time Holmes and three other individuals allegedly exited the vehicle and attempted to get into the other vehicle. Holmes was taken into custody at this time.

The Addison Trail-Willowbrook co-op boys swimming team recently tied for eighth place at the 12th annual York Invite in Elmhurst.

AT-Willowbrook was two points out of seventh place.

AT-Willowbrook’s Jack Burns won the 50 freestyle in 22.95. Mikey Strycharz was 11th in 24.56. Burns also took fifth in the 100 with a time of 52.43.

Zachary Thompson tied for 20th with a time of 57.11.

Kyle Haake was 16th in the 200

with a time of 2:04.85, while Strycharz was 20th in time of 2:10.04.

Haake was 15th in the 500 with a time of 5:39.94. Eric Hoda was 21st with a time of 6:13.34.

Thompson placed seventh in the backstroke with a time of 1:01.93, while Jack Wentworth was 22nd in 1:09.53.

Aidan Nichols was 21st in the breaststroke with a time of 1:16.19.

Thomas Holmes was 23rd in 1:16.85.

Marco Chaidez was 19th in the butterfly with a time of 1:06.79, while Salvatore Ciaccio was 21st with a time of 1:07.63.

Willowbrook girls gymnastics team faring well in early going Warriors off to 3-1 start in conference action

The Willowbrook girls gymnastics team continues to make improvements as the calendar heads into the final third of the season.

Through late last week the Warriors were 3-3 overall at the varsity level in dual meets and 3-1 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division action. Willowbrook’s junior-varsity team was 3-2 overall and 3-0 in WSC

Gold meets.

In recent action, the Warriors took fourth at the varsity level at the Glenbard West quad meet, while the JV team took third.

At the Downers Grove North trimeet, Willowbrook was second at both the varsity and JV levels.

In a recent loss to Hinsdale South in WSC Gold action, Willowbrook recorded a season-high 125.2 at the varsity level.

The Warriors also were winners against WSC Gold foe Leyden at the varsity level and they took fourth at

the Addison Trail invitational with a 121.7 score, finishing ahead of their District 88 counterparts.

Top returning gymnasts from last year’s team include sophomore all-arounder Karli Wilson and junior Autumn Palacios, who competes on beam and floor exercise.

Key newcomers to the team include freshmen all-arounders Maeve Costello, Alexis Fitzgerald, Kylie Rodgers, Riley Wieringa and Abby Wrenn.

Willowbrook coach Deanna Zuchowski said one thing she’s

been impressed with thus far is the group’s embracement of the team concept. “That encourages the athletes to push one another to make each other better,” she said. “We talk a lot about bettering yourself for your teammates. ‘Once you get better, we all get better.’ It’s easy for a team concept to get lost when gymnastics is such an individual sport, but at the high-school level it’s important for them to help each other. They are assisting each other with their routines, what to do in each of their routines and important critiques they all

can learn from. The girls have been working on connecting their skills on beam. Now they just have to perfect them and start hitting their tricks during a meet.”

Thus far, the Warriors have excelled on beam and vault. “They all have tried new and more difficult routines and have been successful in accomplishing the new skills,” said Zuchowski. “The girls also have been trying new skills on beam and trying to do their connections with

District 4 welcomes Salt Creek Ballet Outreach program Students at all eight elementary schools in Addison School District 4 had the opportunity to learn about orchestral music, when the Salt Creek Ballet (SCB) brought its Orchestra Outreach program to Addison recently.

Kelly Stokes, the Community Engagement Coordinator for SCB introduced the students to cellist Sara Sitzer and French horn player Kelly Langenberg who, in turn, shared information about their instruments— including how they produce sound and what materials they’re made of.

They spoke to the students about music composition and how music can be used to tell a story or set a mood, before working with the students to compose a short piece of music. Stokes then talked with the students about Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite and demonstrated some ballet movements before teaching them a brief dance routine. The musicians played while the students danced.

This program has been held at Stone School for the past two years.

A grant from the JCS Fund of the DuPage Foundation provided funding for the program so that all District 4 elementary students could participate.

“Karli has stepped up and has really become an important asset to this young group of girls,” said Zuchowski. “Karli is an all-around great teammate. She comes in early, stays late to perfect her skills she may have missed the previous meet and she encourages her teammates at all levels. She has goals not only for herself, but for the team as a whole. She always is looking toward the future of the team and how she can help each individual.”

Zuchowski likes the progress her squad as made this season. “We have a young team again this year,” she said. “We have had to overcome some early obstacles with injuries and sicknesses with this young team to get them ready for the quick season. The new freshmen have stepped up of late and are starting to feel more comfortable. From the top down, the girls have progressed.”

Fenton wrestlers continue to rack up victories Bison boys basketball team scores win against Walther Christian

The Fenton wrestling team continues to put check marks in the win column.

Late last week, the Bison won a quadrangular meet against Metea Valley, Blue Island Eisenhower and Rolling Meadows. Fenton downed Metea Valley 43-30, defeated Eisenhower 48-15 and scored a 36-28 win against Rolling Meadows to move its overall mark to 14-3 in dual meets.

Earlier, Fenton dropped matches to Addison Trail, Montini and Chicago Brother Rice.

The Bison lost 47-24 to Addison Trail in non-conference action, dropped a 66-15 contest to Montini in non-conference competition and also lost 41-33 to Brother Rice in another non-conference affair. Montini recently was ranked No. 5 in the nation.

“Those three squads (Addison Trail, Montini and Brother Rice) are talented and have many experienced wrestlers, but we did not wrestle to our potential or with much toughness,” said

On the individual front, Hastings has been thrilled with the performances of many.

Through late last week senior Dylan Butts was 20-1 with 17 pins at 182 pounds. Senior Jack Butts was 17-5, while sophomore Danny Ramirez was 14-5 at 132 pounds.

Sophomore Jeremy Piskorz was 13-6 at 126 pounds with 10 wins by pin. Senior Isaiah Brock was 14-6 at 285 pounds with 11 pins.

Senior Anthony Park was 10-2 at 170 pounds, while freshman Jonah Koskiewicz was 9-2 at 106 pounds.

Senior Carlos Mercado was 11-8 at 145 pounds. Senior Danny Sotelo was 10-6 at 145 pounds, while senior Mateo Valdez was 11-8 at 220 pounds. Freshman David Burch was 7-5 at 126 pounds.

Conroy extending Winter Clothing Drive to benefit DuPage PADS To help families in need stay warm this winter, state Rep. Deb Conroy is collecting winter weather clothing to benefit DuPage PADS through Friday, Jan. 12.

“I want to thank everyone who has already donated to this wonderful organization.

DuPage PADS is fighting everyday to end homelessness in DuPage,” said Conroy. “We wanted to make sure that we are doing everything we can to support them. I am extending our collection drive through Jan. 12 to ensure that we are best helping those in need this winter.”

Conroy is collecting waterproof hats, gloves, boots, sweat shirts and cleaning supplies which can be dropped off at her constituent services office located at 28 S. Villa Ave. in Villa Park Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Collected items will be donated to the DuPage Pads, which provides housing and supportive services to help end homelessness in DuPage County.

New Illinois bicycle traffic laws in effect as of January 1 According to a release from Ride Illinois, three new Illinois bicycle traffic laws went into effect Jan. 1.

The most notable change in traffic law allows drivers to pass bicycles in a no-passing zone in order to improve cyclist safety and traffic flow on the road. Under certain conditions when it’s safe to do so, it is now legal for drivers to cross the a solid no-passing centerline into the oncoming lane in order to pass a cyclist by at least three feet, the minimum legal clearance.

The new legislation also officially legalizes bicycling on road shoulders, a common safety practice of cyclists, and allows cyclists to use a rear taillight instead of the legally required rear reflector when bicycling at night.

The traffic bill, House Bill 1784, was proposed by Ride Illinois, a nonprofit bicycle advocacy organization dedicated to improving bicycling conditions and safety throughout the state. Filed back in January, HB1784 unanimously passed both chambers in May, and was signed into law by the governor in September. The new legislation went into effect on Jan. 1.

“This new legislation legalizes some common motorist and bicyclist traffic practices,” said Ed Barsotti, Ride Illinois’ Chief Programs Officer. “The intent is to make the roads safer while improving car-bicycle interactions.”

Rear red taillights approved The last provision of the new legislation allows cyclists to use a rear, red taillight instead of (or in addition to) the currently required rear red reflector when bicycling at night. Today’s improved bicycle light technology has much greater visibility than reflectors, and many bicyclists solely use rear lights already. Eight states and the City of Chicago already allow either a light or reflector in their vehicle code, and Illinois will join the group beginning Jan. 1.

IC Catholic Prep boys basketball team wins own holiday tournament

The IC Catholic Prep boys basketball team had itself a fine holiday season.

The Knights won their own IC Catholic Prep-Westmont tournament by going a perfect 4-0. IC Catholic Prep defeated Montini 56-52 to win the championship. The win moved IC Catholic Prep to 11-4 overall.

In earlier action, the Knights defeated Christ the King 41-22 in the semifinals of the tournament. After playing to a 4-4 tie in the first quarter, the Knights outscored Christ the King 12-3 in the second quarter

and 14-6 in the third quarter to pull away.

Khali Saunders led the Knights with 12 points and 13 rebounds.

Nico Gaudio had eight points, while Kevin Cheng had seven points. Alex Meurer had four points, eight rebounds and five assists. Kris Askew had five points and hit a 3-pointer.

The Knights also were tournament winners against Elmwood Park and Chicago Latin School.

In a 44-41 win against Latin, IC Catholic Prep used a 13-10 second quarter to take a 21-18 lead into halftime. The two teams each scored 12 points in the third quarter and 11 points each in the fourth quarter.

Saunders paced IC Catholic Prep with 14 points to go with 10 rebounds. Cheng had 11 points (1 three-pointer), while Meurer had 10 points (1 three-pointer). Gaudio had five points.

Passing laws updated Long no-passing zones on twolane roads commonly present a problem for drivers trying to legally pass a bicyclist with at least three feet of clearance. The travel lanes of most roads lack the width needed for drivers to safely and legally pass a cyclist with at least three feet of clearance while staying within the lane.
