Local food pantry receives $10,000 from Canadian Pacific Holiday Train As part of the Canadian Pacific’s 2021 holiday train celebration, they donated $10,000 to the Bensenville-Wood Dale Food Pantry. This is their fourth consecutive year donating to the pantry.

The Canadian Pacific Holiday Train aims to raise awareness of local hunger issues in the United States and Canada. The train first stopped in Bensenville in 2018 and typically features free live musical entertainment, giveaways, refreshments, food donations, and a check presentation to the food pantry.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, CP Rail hosted a virtual concert and continued donating to food pantries around the country. Their virtual event took place on Saturday, Dec.

The Bensenville-Wood Dale Food Pantry has been a volunteer-based organization for more than 50 years.

Willowbrook’s boys basketball team won three of four games last week to improve its overall season record to 14-9. The Warriors began the week with a 73-69 victory over Libertyville in the championship game of Lake Zurich High School’s Martin Luther King Jr. holiday tournament on Monday, Jan. 17. One night later, the Warriors beat Addison Trail 73-61. Willowbrook extended its winning streak to nine games with last week’s West Suburban Gold Conference win over the Blazers. The Warriors’ winning streak ended with Friday’s 82-74 conference loss at Proviso East. Willowbrook bounced back from Friday’s loss to beat Glenbard East 72-40 in Saturday’s non-conference game in Villa Park. The Warriors led the Rams 27-13 at the end of the first quarter and 54-26 at halftime. Senior Marquel Saleek (above - No. 3) scored all of his team-leading 17 points during the first half. Local artist passes knowledge on to Bensenville Park District youth Little did Bensenville resident Theo Deming-Grant know that a freshman art class at Fenton High School would inspire a colorful career in art and design that has come full circle. Now she is passing along her knowledge to a new generation of artists as an instructor with the Bensenville Park District.

College of DuPage is offering free adult classes for English Language Acquisition starting in the next few weeks.

Learning reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills can improve career opportunities and more.

English classes are available in the morning at the Bensenville Public Library, 200 S. Church Road, and in the evening at Fenton High School, 1000 W. Green Street. All participants are required to take a placement test so the teachers can determine students’ current skill level before classes start.

Classes at the Bensenville Library start on Tuesday, Mar. 1 at 9:15 a.m. Interested participants can take their placement test at 9:15 a.m. on either Tuesday, Feb. 22 or Thursday, Feb. 24 at the library.

Classes at Fenton High School begin on Monday, Jan. 31 at 6:30 p.m.

“I always knew I wanted to be an artist from the time I was very young,” says Deming-Grant. “It was a matter of discovering my medium, and in high school I found I loved painting in all mediums. However, I find acrylic to be the easiest to work with.”

Her extensive portfolio includes oils, texture and acrylic painting, in addition to photography. Her work— including custom portraits and larger-scale murals—has been sought after by private collectors and corporations and has been featured in several Chicago art galleries.

“I am beyond excited to be able to contribute to my hometown,” Deming-Grant said. “Throughout the years, I have discovered that the area is full of rich artistic talent, and I’m hoping to inspire it in others as well.”

She is teaching four fine arts classes as part of the park district’s winter-spring offerings: Beginning Painting, Winter Workshop, Painting &

Extra SAT available at Fenton; register by Feb. 11

Fenton will be offering a National SAT Exam on Saturday, Mar. 12 at 8 a.m. This test is an optional opportunity to take the SAT an additional time, as all Juniors will take the SAT at Fenton during the

regular school day on Wedneday, Apr. 13. If you are interested in taking the exam you can register at sat.org.

The exam is free to students who qualify for free or reduced lunch.

High-flying Warriors finish brilliant week by winning an invitational title Successful week also includes a team score of 138.95 in a win over Addison Trail

The Willowbrook High School girls gymnastics team completed a superb week by winning the team title at Saturday’s Bulldog Invite at Riverside-Brookfield High School.

The Warriors earned a first-place team score of 135.325 at the event, which included nine teams.

The host team from Riverside-Brookfield earned second in the team standings with its total of 130.850.

Senior Bella Naumovsky led Willowbrook to the team title at Saturday’s event by winning the first-place medal in the individual all-around competition with her score of 35.750.

Junior Sarah Ball of the Warriors finished third in the all-around standings with her total of 34.675. Senior Tess Placek of Willowbrook claimed fourth in the all-around standings with her score of 33.90. Junior Hanna Mitrick contributed an all-around total of 30.75, which was good for 17th place.

Naumovsky turned in first-place efforts on the uneven bars (9.1) and balance beam (8.9) at Saturday’s meet. She placed fourth in both the vault (8.85) and floor exercises (8.9).

Ball won the event’s vault competition with her score of 9.4. She also placed third in floor exercises (8.95), sixth on the uneven bars (8.075) and eighth on the balance beam (8.25).

Placek provided the Warriors with second-place performances on the uneven bars (8.3) and the balance beam (8.7). She claimed sixth in floor exercises (8.6) and tied for eighth on the vault (8.3).

Willowbrook began the week with a 136.7-128.05 victory over Leyden in a West Suburban Gold Conference dual meet in Villa Park on Jan. 18.

Two days later, the Warriors beat Addison Trail 138.95-109.85 in a con-

ference dual meet in Addison. Willowbrook’s total of 138.95 reportedly earned the program’s highest meet score in over 25 years.

The Warriors improved their season dual-meet record to 6-2 with their win over Addison Trail. The victory gave Willowbrook a conference dual-meet record of 4-1.

Naumovsky won the all-around title at the Jan. 20 meet in Addison with her score of 36.65. That total included a first-place performance in floor exercises that received a score of 9.5—a score that tied Willowbrook’s all-time program record in that event.

Naumovsky also posted a firstplace score of 9.3 on the uneven bars in the Jan. 20 meet against the Blazers.

Ball earned the top vault score (9.2) in last week’s meet at Addison Trail. She also delivered a second-place score of 9.35 in floor exercises. She and Placek tied for second on the balance beam with their scores of 8.8.

Mitrick’s first-place effort on the balance beam (8.9) helped the Warriors to their score of 138.95 in Addison. Placek’s contribution to that team total included an 8.5 on the bars, an 8.8 on the balance beam, an 8.65 in floor exercises and an 8.4 on the vault.

Sophomore Mia McBride joined Naumovsky, Ball, Placek and Mitrick in the Warriors’ varsity lineup during last week’s victory at Addison Trail. McBride recorded scores of 8.4 on the vault, 7.7 on the uneven bars, 7.7 on the balance beam and 7.4 in floor exercises for an all-around total of 31.2.

The Warriors will compete in this Saturday’s West Suburban Gold Conference Meet at Downers Grove South.

Willowbrook’s girls gymnastics team earned victories in three separate meets last week. The Warriors began the week with a 136.7128.05 win in a West Suburban Gold Conference dual meet against Leyden on Jan. 18. Two days later, Willowbrook defeated Addison Trail 138.95-109.85 in a conference dual meet at Addison Trail. The Warriors completed the week by winning the team title in Saturday’s Bulldog Invite at Riverside-Brookfield High School. Willowbrook produced a first-place team score of 135.325 at Saturday’s nineteam meet. Senior Bella Naumovsky of the Warriors won the individual all-around title at Saturday’s invite with her score of 35.750.

The Willowbrook girls basketball team won two of three games last week to run its season record to 19-3.

The Warriors finished the week with Friday’s 69-34 West Suburban Gold Conference victory over Addison Trail in Villa Park.

Willowbrook improved its conference record to 10-0 with that win, while Addison Trail fell to 15-8 overall and 8-2 in conference play. The Blazers’ only two conference losses have come against the Warriors.

Willowbrook needs to win its last two conference games to post a perfect 12-0 West Suburban Gold record. The Warriors will play a conference home game against Hinsdale South this Friday. Willowbrook will close out the conference season with a Feb. 1 contest at Downers Grove South.

The Warriors began their week with a 58-51 loss to Libertyville at the Coach Derril Kipp’s Hoopfest event at Benet Academy. Willowbrook held a double-digit lead during the second half, but Libertyville overtook the Warriors with a huge fourth-quarter surge.

Willowbrook rebounded from the Jan. 17 setback against Libertyville by earning a 51-46 win at York on Jan. 19. The Warriors overcame a 2923 halftime deficit against the Dukes.

Sophomore Calli Kenny provided a team-leading 19 points for the Warriors in their win over York. She also handed out five assists. Senior Sophie Sullivan supplied 13 points and four rebounds. Freshman Hannah Kenny contributed 10 points and three steals, while sophomore Elle

Viewpoint Two-income households spur income inequality and polarization

By Jim Nowlan Household incomes in America have become more and more unequal over recent decades, as measured by the Gini Index of Inequality. American society has also become more sharply polarized, as measured by Donald Trump’s continuing, intense support in small town and rural America.

I know why, or at least know some of the key factors.

From my perch in rural Illinois since just after World War II, I have seen the causes at play: women now work, at any jobs they can achieve, and like kinds marry; unions are often shadows of their former strength and numbers, and singleparent households have tripled since my childhood, to about 30 percent of all.

Growing up in the 1940-50s, I recall that most married women stayed at home, and single women worked in limited fields until they

married. Indeed, school boards required female teachers to stop teaching when they wed, to open a job for a man. Obviously, all is dramatically different today.

I illustrate with two families, composites of many households I have known personally.

Post WWII, Dr. Sam Smith, the local family doctor, and his family lived on the same block as Joe Jones and his brood. Doc Smith had a good income. His wife Sally, an RN, stayed at home with their children.

Joe Jones worked “on the line” at CAT in Peoria, a good UAW job.

His wife Joan stayed at home with the children.

The ratio of the doc’s income to that of the CAT worker was about 2- or 3-1. Both solidly middle-class families back then. Sam and Joe were in the local Lions Club; they coached each other’s kids in Little League. Sally and Joan were active in the American Legion Auxiliary.

Fast forward to the present.

Dr. Smith’s granddaughter Susan is herself an MD. She married, not unsurprisingly, an MD. Their income is, say, half a million

annually. One-time CAT worker Joe’s grandson Bob has little access to good union jobs. The crawler company has moved most of its jobs out of Illinois, to the non-union South, and the jobs aren’t as good as they once were, anyway. So, Bob now works at the local hog slaughtering plant, making around $35,000 a year. Of necessity, his wife Emily works at Walmart, making, say, $15,000 a year.

Now, the ratio of the medical family income to the worker stiffs is probably 10-1. The doctor-doctor couple is long gone from their grandparents’ small town, living far away in a leafy suburb or gated community. Bob and Emily are still in the small town, and depending on their cultural values, live in either a neat bungalow, or a sloppy small house with two rundown pickups in their yard. The twain of the doctorworking stiff families today shall never meet. And unfortunately, there are no young docs or other professionals left in the small town to strengthen the community leadership pool.

Bob is honked off about the

situation. He sees on TV what the wealthy have. It doesn’t seem fair.

He backs Trump.

But there is worse, such as the single-parent household, headed by often ill-educated mother Marilyn (father has been absent since conception). Marilyn lives in a trailer on the edge of the small town, or in a low-income, federally subsidized apartment building, with lots of other single-mother households.

On either minimum-wage work or a panoply of welfare programs, Marilyn receives about $15,00020,000 per year in income or benefits. Thus, the income of the gated-community docs to Marilyn is about 30-1! But kids of the single mom still want the same Nike sneakers as the docs’ children.

Trying to handle a rambunctious family on her own, Marilyn is hyper-stressed. Any resilience she may have had is about shot, for she lacks the strong support network the better off tend to have. Marilyn is so far behind in the race for stability and comfort that she is thinking about giving up—

maybe already has—to a life of welfare, drugs and alcohol.

What to do, to build stronger families in the struggling middle and at the bottom, and to reduce inequality?

Democrats favor replacing the income provided by a second person in the household in my youth with a range of government programs, which runs the risk of increasing long-term dependence on Uncle Sam. Republicans say more education is the answer. I propose incentive-driven, stair steps of increased government support in return for increased efforts in the household at better parenting and more education and skill development.

Women work today, and at whatever jobs they qualify for, and they marry like kinds, if they marry.

Nothing wrong with any of that. Yet, it has consequences with which we need to grapple.

Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act’s bridge funding for Illinois

By U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi Recently, I was delighted to join my colleagues in Congress and local representatives on the Rand Road bridge in Des Plaines to announce the funding that Illinois will be receiving from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act to repair our bridges.

Illinois will receive $1.4 billion over five years to repair or replace bridges in poor condition. Of the more than 2,000 bridges in our Congressional district, about 12 percent are classified as structurally deficient.

With this funding, we will begin to repair our bridges, keeping our communities and economy running smoothly and safely. I was proud to vote for this infrastructure bill so that Illinoisians can truly come together

DHS establishes Homeland Security Academic Advisory Council The Department of Homeland Security is establishing the Homeland Security Academic Advisory Council (HSAAC), a body that will consist of homeland security and academic experts aimed at preventing the exploitation of the American higher education system to advance foreign interests.

Last Congress, I proudly introduced the bipartisan and bicameral Homeland Security Higher Education Advisory Council Act with Sen. Dick Durbin and Rep. Ralph Norman to reestablish this important council, and we successfully passed the key components of this legislation in the FY21 Appropriations Bill.

“It was close for awhile,” said Willowbrook coach Terry Harrell after Friday’s game. “They [the Blazers] show up spirited against us. Our

girls kind of made an attitude adjustment in the second half. We came out a lot more aggressive in the second half. We played a good second half defensively.”

While disappointed with last week’s loss to Libertyville, Harrell said the game should provide valuable experience for the Warriors in the upcoming post-season.

“We came out in the second half and we played really good defense, and then it was like we hit a wall,” said Harrell of last week’s loss. “Our girls are talented. I think we learned a lot from the game. That will go a long way, especially when we get into the playoffs.”

My bill to rename Schaumburg Post Office in honor of the veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars I recently introduced a bill to rename the Schaumburg Post Office at 450 West Schaumburg Road as the “Veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan Memorial Post Office Building.”

This renaming would honor veter-

ans who risked their lives to defend America in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. When we visit this post office during our daily lives, this new name will remind us to reflect on the courageous sacrifices of these veterans.

In her latest letter, Alice shared a bit of advice about life and this column. When a 97-years-young friend is kind enough to offer guidance based on their own life lessons you should understand it’s high time to listen. I sure did.

Alice suggested that if I was looking for something to write about, I might tackle this credo: “Don’t sweat the small stuff and always think on the positive side.” It’s a mantra that Alice lives by, so it must be a pretty good one. In fact, it’s so good I think I may have heard it before. Writers may have already covered the subject, maybe even in a book.

Still, the words are appropriate and worthwhile to ponder, as I did.

They’ve served Alice for many years and have proven themselves not only enduring but true. I will keep them in mind and think of Alice when I do.

This advice from Alice, while appreciated, was not, for me, the most important part of her letter. That came at the very end, when she told me that if and when she makes it to 100 years old she is going to go for a ride in a hot air balloon.

There’s something about a new year that often has me reflecting on time. I guess that’s fairly natural.

For many of us, January is a time of assessing priorities, setting goals, wrapping up the old year and planning for what’s to come.

This year, those thoughts were punctuated by a note I received in the mail from my friend, Alice, in Ohio, who is a regular reader of this column.

Alice originally reached out to provide kind words of support after the loss of my husband and we became friends. She was 96-yearsold at the time.

Alice has since had a birthday and is currently 97. I hope she doesn’t mind my divulging her age; it should be a source of pride. Not many of us have the opportunity to grace this planet for 97 years—and remain in good health. Alice has managed to do both.

Warriors’ nine-game winning streak ends with an 82-74 loss at Proviso East The Willowbrook boys basketball team completed a busy week with Saturday’s decisive 72-40 win over Glenbard East in Villa Park. The Warriors improved their overall record to 14-9 with the non-conference win over their neighborhood rival from Lombard.

One night before playing the Rams, Willowbrook traveled to Proviso East for a West Suburban Gold Conference battle with the Pirates.

Proviso East defeated the Warriors 82-74. The loss snapped Willowbrook’s nine-game winning streak.

The Warriors began last week’s action by defeating Libertyville 7369 in the championship game of Lake Zurich’s Martin Luther King Jr. holiday tournament on Monday, Jan. 17. Willowbrook won all three of its games in the holiday event.

The Warriors pushed their winning streak to nine with a 73-61 conference win at Addison Trail on Jan. 18.

Friday’s loss at Proviso East moved the Warriors’ conference record to 5-2.

Saturday’s game marked the Warriors’ 10th game of January. Willowbrook has won nine of those games, which were played in a span of 19 days. After the Warriors built a 5426 halftime lead over Glenbard East, Willowbrook head coach Chris Perkins rested the team’s starters for the entire second half.

“Ten games in 19 days; that’s a

lot of minutes on those legs,” said Perkins, whose team continues its season with this Friday’s conference game at Hinsdale South.

Senior Noah Campbell and junior Joey Tumilty both scored 21 points in Willowbrook’s win over Libertyville in the title contest of Lake Zurich’s holiday tournament. The Warriors held a 31-28 halftime lead over Libertyville. Willowbrook’s lead stood at 50-49 at the end of the third quarter.

Tumilty’s 21-point output featured five 3-point baskets. He made at least one long-range shot in each quarter and connected on a pair of 3-point attempts during the second period.

Campbell, who drained a 3-point shot in the first half, scored 18 of his 21 points in the second half. He provided five baskets, including a 3-point field goal, in the third quarter. Campbell, who grabbed five rebounds in the game, made two field goals and sank three free throws during the fourth quarter.

Senior Marquel Saleek contributed 12 points and five rebounds in Willowbrook’s win over Libertyville.

Junior Isaac Sobieszczyk provided 11 points and seven rebounds.

The Warriors led Addison Trail 19-8 through one quarter of last week’s conference game in Addison.

Willowbrook led the Blazers 38-27 at halftime and 57-49 at the end of the third quarter.

Campbell provided 20 points in

the Warriors’ victory over their District 88 rival. Saleek added 17 points, while Sobieszczyk delivered nine points and nine rebounds. Senior Terrell Walker contributed nine points.

Proviso East, which beat Willowbrook 75-60 in the championship game of St. Charles East’s Thanksgiving tournament on Nov. 27, held a 39-32 halftime lead over the Warriors in Friday’s conference game.

The Pirates maintained a 62-51 edge at the end of the third quarter.

Campbell scored 22 points in Friday’s loss at Proviso East. Saleek supplied 19 points, eight rebounds and five assists, while Sobieszczyk piled up 15 points and 16 rebounds.

Senior Evan Stubblefield contributed 11 points and six rebounds.

“We had a tough loss last night [against Proviso East],” said Perkins after Saturday’s win over the Rams.

“We came out tonight and tried to get things back on track. Our goal was to try to apply pressure without fouling.

We were able to force a lot of turnovers in the first half, and we only had six fouls.”
