Addison man charged after leading police on high-speed chase Three spike strip maneuvers, taser finally stop suspect

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Villa Park Chief of Police Michael Rivas have announced that Judge Joshua Dieden granted the state’s motion to deny pre-trial release for an Addison man accused of leading police on a high-speed chase.

Oscar Salazar, 35, of Addison, is charged with two counts of aggravated fleeing and eluding a police officer (Class 4 felony) and multiple misdemeanor and petty traffic offenses including aggravated speeding in a school zone.

On Wednesday, Jan. 17 at approximately 9:01 p.m., the Villa Park Police Department observed a vehicle in a grocery store parking lot that was suspected of fleeing from Bloomingdale police several days ago.

After a brief period of surveillance, the vehicle, allegedly driven by Salazar, pulled out of the parking lot and the officers followed the vehicle for approximately one mile before additional officers joined in. When the officers activated

21 defendants charged with stealing from DuPage County businesses since Jan. 1 DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Oak Brook Chief of Police Brian Strockis have announced that Judge Michael Burton granted the State’s motion to deny pre-trial release for an Ecuadorian migrant currently staying in Chicago charged with stealing merchandise from the Oak Brook Macy’s.

Jaime Ubaldo Obando-Andrade, 32, appeared in First Appearance Court and is charged with one count of burglary (Class 2 felony) and one count of retail theft (Class 3 felony).

On Jan. 13 at approximately 7:37 p.m., officers with the Oak Brook Police Department responded to a call of a retail theft at the Macy’s, located at 1 Oakbrook Center.

Following an investigation into the matter, it is alleged that Obando-Andrade entered the store, selected a jacket with an approximate value of $395, put the jacket on and then left the store without paying for the jacket. The area has taken a one-two punch to the solar plexus from Mother Nature the past week or so with heavy snow and bitter cold. However, the McGrath family from Lombard braved the elements and got creative with what Mother Nature left them. The McGraths built one of the snowmen after the first wet snowstorm Jan. 9, and then built the second following the second wet snowstorm Jan. 12. Each snowman took around eight hours to build. It’s the third winter that the McGraths have built a giant snowman, but this is the first winter they’ve built two. Mr. and Mrs. Snowman certainly have captured the attention of neighbors and passers-by. “We have only received compliments and kind words from neighbors,” said Mary Kate. “People who drove by when we were in the process of building gave us a thumbs up. Other people stop and roll down their windows and say how cool they are. We met a new neighbor walking her dog the other day, and she said thank you for spreading some cheer during these cold winter days. We do see people stop and pose with the snowmen; one of our neighbors has an annual photo with their kids. Others just take photos from their vehicles. Even our snow-plow driver stopped and got out to take a photo! It makes us happy to add a little whimsy to our snow-covered neighborhood.” Mary Kate said the giant snowmen will start to melt with the warmer weather this week, but she added they are resilient. “In previous years, it has taken many weeks for the snowmen to completely disappear,” she said.

As Illinois’ recreational cannabis industry once again reported record sales for 2023, the state’s attorney general is calling on the federal government to reclassify the substance.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency classifies cannabis as a Schedule 1 drug, meaning the federal government believes it has “no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse.”

But Attorney General Kwame Raoul and his counterparts in 11 other states are calling on a reclassification to Schedule 3, meaning it has “a moderate to low potential for physical and psychological dependence.”

Raoul and the other attorneys general said the reclassification would allow states to continue to “set the standard” for legal products, would allow businesses to take ordinary tax deductions, and would increase the ability to research the substance to fully determine its effects.

that have established robust regulatory frameworks for legal cannabis sales,” Raoul said in a news release.

“State-regulated cannabis industries protect consumers from the dangers of unregulated products and the illicit market. Rescheduling cannabis will remove obstacles for legitimate businesses and allow them to better collaborate with law enforcement and regulators.”

Last year, Illinois recreational cannabis dispensaries sold a record $1.6 billion of product, accompanied by a record number of sales to Illinois residents.

Sales to out-of-state residents, however, fell by $71 million from 2022’s total, marking the first drop in that category since cannabis was legalized on a recreational basis in January 2020.

The growth in 2023 marked a 5 percent increase from the year prior, meaning the pace of the industry’s

When searching Obando-Andrade’s vehicle, officers found approximately $3,000 worth of suspected stolen merchandise as well as rolls of tinfoil.

Officers also found an I.C.E. electronic monitoring device that the defendant had allegedly cut off, as well as a fictitious Washington driver’s license with the defendant’s photograph but a different name.

“With the new year, our mission to protect DuPage County businesses and patrons remains the same,” Berlin said. “Contrary to popular belief, retail theft is not a victimless crime and has a far-reaching effect on the entire community.”

“This was an excellent example of solid police work and looking beyond the initial incident,” Strockis said.

their emergency lights and sirens near Addison Road and Division Street to conduct a traffic stop, Salazar allegedly would not pull over.

It is alleged that after Salazar Oscar Salazar disobeyed a stop sign at Sunset Drive, an officer pulled up next to Salazar and deployed a mobile spike strip, disabling the right rear tire of the vehicle. Salazar continued to drive, disobeying multiple stop lights, and ultimately, traveling westbound on North Ave., reportedly reaching speeds of approximately 80 mph. It is alleged that as Salazar maneuvered through an intersection against a red light, officers again deployed spike strips, disabling the front right tire.

Salazar reportedly continued to drive toward I-355 and as he attempted to enter the I-355 southbound ramp, officers deployed spike strips for the third time, causing the vehicle to come to a stop. It is further alleged that officers gave multiple commands to Salazar to exit the vehicle and when he refused, officers were forced to deploy tasers. Salazar was taken into custody at this time.

“Public safety remains the top priority of my office and the allegations that Mr. Salazar ignored multiple traffic control devices and officers’ attempts to pull him over while driving a disabled car are outrageous,” Berlin said.

“Even more alarming are the allegations that Mr. Salazar drove the disabled vehicle at a high rate of speed through a residential neighborhood.

More in 2024

Someone I’ve never met (social media, where else?) came up with a phrase for the new year: “Let’s do more in 2024.”

I’ve decided to adopt it for my own, because it’s well-balanced, makes logical sense and has good meaning, purpose and intent.

Plus it rhymes; who doesn’t appreciate a good rhyme?

But what, exactly, do I want more of in the next year? What do we all want?

The basics, of course. Here’s my short list: More peace.

Isn’t this a nice thought? More peace: world peace, governmental peace, neighborhood peace, hippy peace, familial peace, marital peace and - most importantly— inner peace.

Peace is all-encompassing and all-good. There can never be too much peace. Unless you are talking an extra piece of pie after eating one already, but that’s a different kind of peace and doesn’t count, unless it’s in calories.

More kindness.

Kindness ranks right up there with peace; the two are twin equals, or at the very least kissing cousins. Kindness begets peace and vice versa.

Kindness is equally effective with family members, friends and strangers. It takes little to no effort and provides positive feel-goods to the giver as well as the receiver.

Kindness costs nothing and it is something we all possess in infinite amounts.

Not even chocolate can claim that many attributes.

More faith.

I’m not necessarily talking about the kind you get in church. Faith— and a deepened trust—reside far beyond church. That’s the faith I aspire to. Faith in nature—that trees will shed their leaves in the fall; dandelions will sprout optimistically each spring. Trust in the human spirit—people are innately good. Trust in the future.

Trust in today. Trust in yourself.

Trust in something bigger than yourself.

That’s faith.

More doing and participating.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve spent nearly a lifetime thinking about the things I’d like to do.

Now is the time to actually do them.

To participate for real. These bucket-list acts don’t need to be earth-shattering or life changing.

They just need to be you doing them. Maybe that means world

You do what means doing to you, just do it more, in 2024.

More connectivity.

But not to our phones or the internet. More than ever we need to realize and appreciate our connections to one another. We are all part of the whole. We may think of ourselves as individuals, be we are, truly, nothing without each other.

No one is an island. We not only need one another; we are better together. Connections enhance our lives and make the world a better place—one handshake, one hug, at a time.

More light.

Of the kind that requires no battery-power or electricity. True light is a beacon that knows no physical power source. We all have a light that shines from within however cliche or corny that may sound.

It’s true. Open up. Flip your inner light switch to “On.” Together we can illuminate the world, and that, my friends, can change everything.

More love.

You probably saw this one coming. The most basic tenet of all: we need more love. We can never overdose on love. We can never give too much of it. When we think about basic needs, we list food, water and shelter, but love should be at the top of the list— in both the giving and receiving mode.

Just like kindness, giving love provides just as much as receiving it does, perhaps even more so.

Doing more in 2024; More peace. More kindness. More faith. More participation. More connectedness. More light and more love. Seven aspirations for the year. Lofty? Perhaps. Doable?

I think so. Maybe take one each day of the week. Maybe try them all at once.

Either way, you can’t go wrong.

But even before that started, we were seeing a big backlash from industry incumbents. After all, if you have a solar panel on your roof, an EV in your driveway and a heat pump to keep you warm you won’t have any ongoing electricity, natural gas or gasoline bills. That’s great for you— but might not make your current fuel suppliers very happy.

Which means that for us to keep that amazing machine working (and to make sure that we pass a cleaner planet, with more reliable, lower cost energy onto our children) we’re going to have to build new transmission at three to five times the speed we have ever built them before and find a way to make sure that the wealth that is created is sufficiently shared to make sure every is rowing in the same direction.

Which is where the CETA Act comes in.

The CETA Act As Congressman Levin and I looked at this problem, we quickly came to the conclusion that there are three reasons transmission doesn’t get built fast enough. Too often, the people who are responsible for approving a new transmission line lose money if cheaper power comes onto their grid, or if new electricity generation eases congestion to reduce supply/demand pressures.

• The Participation model is broken.

Communities directly affected by new energy investments rarely get to participate effectively and often lack the regulatory and technical expertise to effectively engage.

• The Permitting process is broken.

As you read this, developers are trying to connect two million megawatts of electricity generation capacity to the grid. (That’s almost double the total installed capacity today.) This new capacity is overwhelmingly renewable and almost none of the developers

Hey, Lombard. Someone from the village needs to drive down St. Charles Road eastbound and westbound between Elizabeth Street and Grace. It is like skiing down moguls.

There are so many bumps. Holes, cracks. It’s disgusting and it makes Lombard look like a very poor ghetto town. Please fix the whole street, not just the sidewalks. Thank you.

The estimated cost of this project is $1,980,000, and the Village has received $1,205,000 in Federal funding to support this project.” *** Congresspersons Bill Foster, Sean Casten and Lauren Underwood are asking the Biden administration to provide federal funds for migrants arriving in Illinois. On the face of it, that sounds good, so Illinois doesn’t take on the full burden of the overall costs. However, for one, the federal funds are still our taxpayer dollars, and we have no say in how that money will be spent. Two, these legislators blame Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas, with Foster and Underwood calling him sending migrants out of Texas a “political stunt.” Underwood said, “Republicans have created this humanitarian crisis.” I had to read that twice. Last time I checked, it was the Biden administration that opened the flood gates. You can’t blame Gov. Abbott for not wanting his state to drown; he is just rerouting the overflow. *** There is a case in the Illinois Supreme Court over whether the smell

of cannabis, during a traffic stop, warrants a search. In two cases, a person was charged not with smoking it in the car, but for failure to transport it in an odor-proof container. One of those charged was a passenger. The police don’t know if the odor is coming from unused cannabis or if it has been consumed, the latter of which could lead to impaired driving charges. That seems logical.

But to say there is a “pretext like cannabis odor to disproportionately stop and search Black and Latino drivers,” according to the ACLU and a criminal defense lawyer group, is ridiculous. The police stop a vehicle because they smell cannabis? Boy, unless there is an open window in either vehicle, that must be powerful stuff. How does one prove why the police stop certain vehicles, if they can’t necessarily see the occupants?

And are these groups saying that Blacks and Latinos are more likely to be in possession of cannabis than white individuals? That seems racist in itself. How about, obey the law and give the police no reason to stop you in the first place? *** Watch out. Big Brother is at it again. The following is from the Associated Press: “It’s no joke. Humorous and quirky messages on electronic signs will soon disappear from highways and freeways across the country. The U.S. Federal Highway Administration has given states two years to implement all the changes outlined in its new 1,100-page manual released last month, including rules that spell out how signs and other traffic control devices are regulated. Administration officials said overhead electronic signs with obscure meanings, references to pop culture or those intended to be funny will be banned in 2026 because they can be misunderstood or distracting

Now here is an issue that should be left up to the individual states! *** Chicago is scrambling to create shelters for the arriving migrants. I will not say asylum seekers because I don’t believe all of them are. I can’t help but think of all the homeless people out there in these frigid temperatures, who may be able to find a warming shelter during the day, but what about at night? A sleeping bag and a cardboard box aren’t going to offer much warmth. The City of Chicago has not spent half as much energy trying to find a place for the homeless to stay warm in winter and cool in summer. Yet, the migrants get at least some warmth, even if it is in a police station waiting room. These people are knowingly bringing kids and the elderly to our country at the risk of their health and well-being— and placing a burden on our health care system alone. At what point will the city say enough is enough; send them elsewhere? *** It’s interesting that Illinois’ softon-crime SAFE-T Act went into effect at about the same time that there’s a flood of illegal immigration in our state. It almost seems like Democrats are trying to destroy our state. Thanks a lot, Democrats! *** Did you see the story that $1 billion in U.S. military aid for Ukraine is reportedly unaccounted for? How does $1 billion in aid go unaccounted for? How could one person defraud the U.S. Army of $100 million without being noticed for years?

If there were local grocery stores that would give seniors a break, it would be a relief to many. I don’t want to wait in long confusing lines to buy gasoline. I would like to buy groceries for one person at a reasonable price, pull up to a gas station and fill my gas tank without commotion and confusion. Yes, I’m rather tired and lonely.

Thankfully, I don’t need a food pantry. By the way. I volunteer in a food pantry. We seniors could use a little help in everyday purchasing of food and gasoline, please. Book club gets ‘sweet’ title for annual family read-aloud event

The annual Butterfield All School Book Club family read is under way, and organizer Stephanie Ganakos is just as enthusiastic about it as she is each year at this time.

In fact, the book she chose, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” is one that brought back a memory for her.

“This has been one of my favorite books that my third grade teacher read to me,” shared Ganakos, Butterfield Elementary School’s reading specialist.

She had thought about the book even as far back as last year and then again this spring, but said choosing a book for the annual school-wide read-aloud event is not as simple as just picking a good book.

“I have to appease kindergarten through fifth grade,” Ganakos explained. “And it has to be engaging to read aloud,” as well as containing acceptable content.

She pointed to budgetary considerations as well, saying, “I have to look at the price point. I started searching for the best deal.”

She said funding came in part from the Frank and Mary Discipio Memorial Fund, which was started by retired teacher Diane Discipio; and also from a Butterfield PTA donation.

Now in its eighth year, Ganakos started the book club after attending a literary conference, where she learned about an all-school book-reading program called “One School, One Book” by Read to Them.

The program came with scripts and outlines for activities to go along

with the book, she recalled, and remembers thinking after that first year, “I could do this myself.”

Since then, Ganakos has developed her own program for the threeweek read-alongs, from a school assembly to unveil the book, to skits, prizes and other activities that follow each book’s theme.

“I write the scripts, which is a lot of fun,” she added.

Ganakos said she was surprised to learn that other “Charlie” events were going on around her: the musical version at the Paramount Theatre in Aurora, and the prequel to “Willy Wonka,” called “Wonka,” out in theaters.

“I was so excited I chose this book and all this stuff was happening around it!” she exclaimed.

Ganakos said the students assembled in the gym when the read-along was launched, where clues as to the name of the book were uncovered and one student was chosen to reveal the title.

The excitement was palpable, she described, adding, “They were cheering. It was so cute.”

Upon returning to their classrooms after the assembly, the students found a copy of the book on their desk, although Ganakos said that due to budget constraints, if there were multiple siblings, the youngest one got the copy to bring home.

One book in each classroom also had a “golden ticket” in it, as per the theme of the story, and the recipient got a lollipop-shaped eraser as a prize.

Ganakos said all the students got a chocolate-scented pencil as well.

“We wanted to make sure everyone went home with something,” she related.

The family read-aloud began Jan. 9, and the reading specialist laid out a schedule for the few weeks of the event, adding that the school also has a website where students can hear the book being read aloud by some of the

teachers, and participate in activities related to the book.

She even surprised six lucky students in the cafeteria one day by placing a golden ticket under their seats, which could be turned in for a lollipop-shaped eraser.

During the weeks of the family read-aloud, which ends on Feb. 2, the fifth-graders get to read daily announcements at school about the

book, and students can participate in classroom activities related to “Charlie.”

When the event is over, she said, there will be a special activity day “to celebrate everybody reading the same book,” with a variety of activities.

“I really enjoy doing this,” she summed up. “It’s the highlight of my year!”

COD to receive Rev Up Initiative grant funding The Illinois Community College Board (ICCB), through its Rev Up EV! Community College Initiative has awarded $9.4 million to 25 Illinois community colleges to help support the state’s growing Electric Vehicle (EV) industry through job training and technology development programs.

Among the recipients was College of DuPage, which will receive $525,000.

Overall, the funding will promote

the development and growth of training programs that prepare individuals for careers in EV technology and EV-specific advanced manufacturing fields, with a priority focus on programs and training in areas that are most in demand by EV businesses and industry partners.

“Thanks to Governor Pritzker’s leadership, Illinois is at the forefront of change to vehicle electrification and continues to attract new EV industry companies. This funding

will allow our community college system to increase the trained workforce and create new technology that will support the growing needs of the industry for years to come,” said ICCB Executive Director Brian Durham.

The competitive grant program is intended to support the Climate and Equitable Jobs Act which established Illinois policy to equitably transition to 100 percent clean energy by 2050.

hicles and critical infrastructure for deployment, maintenance, and support, Illinois needs adequate training programs producing more talent in EV priority program areas.

New permanent rules will soon go into effect spelling out how people who own assault weapons and related items that are now heavily regulated in Illinois can register them with the Illinois State Police.

The legislature’s Joint Committee on Administrative Rules voted along party lines Jan. 16 to let the rules go into effect, ending months of negotiations and debate between supporters of the law and gun rights advocates.

“Obviously, this is an issue where there is a difference of opinion on a partisan basis, and I think you saw that play out today,” Sen. Bill Cunningham, D-Chicago, a co-chair of the committee, told reporters after the meeting.

The rules are the result of an assault

weapons ban that state lawmakers passed last year in the wake of a deadly mass shooting at an Independence Day parade in Highland Park in 2022.

That law, known as the Protect Illinois Communities Act, bans the sale, purchase, manufacture, or possession of a long list of firearms that are defined as “assault weapons,” as well as several types of attachments, large-capacity magazines and certain kinds of high-power ammunition.

Under that law, people who already owned such items before the ban took effect are allowed to keep them. But to do so legally, they were supposed to register those items with the Illinois State Police before Jan. 1.

Last fall, ISP published temporary “emergency” rules that went into effect Oct. 1, enabling people to begin filing

online registrations ahead of the Jan. 1 deadline. But many gun owners, gun rights advocates, and state lawmakers pushed back against the rules, complaining that they were too vague in some areas, too complicated in others, and generally impossible to comply with.

In response, ISP held additional public hearings in October and November as it worked to craft permanent rules.

One of the concerns raised during the discussions focused on how ISP planned to collect and store information about the items people registered, and what the agency would do with that information if the law is eventually overturned as unconstitutional.

So far, the law has survived legal challenges in both state and federal courts, but the National Association for Gun Rights, which is the major plaintiff in one of the federal lawsuits, has said it plans to file an appeal with the U.S. Supreme Court within the next several weeks.

Rep. Ryan Spain, R-Peoria, who also co-chairs the committee, said he was frustrated by the short timeframe used to adopt the new rules and by the way some issues were handled. He then offered a motion to prohibit ISP from adopting the rules, arguing that the rules do not meet a requirement in state statute that they be “simple and clear” so that people and groups affected by them can understand them.

That motion failed because it needed eight votes on the 12-member committee but only received six.

Spain then made a motion to “object” to the rules on the same grounds that they were not “simple and clear.”

An objection has little practical effect on the rule, except that it requires the agency to respond to the objection in writing within 90 days before the rule can take effect.

That motion, which only requires a simple majority of members taking part, passed on a 6-5 vote.

That vote allows ISP to move for-

ward by adopting the permanent rules and enforcing them into the future. But it remains unclear how many assault weapon owners will comply with the law by registering those firearms.

According to data maintained by ISP, just under 30,000 individuals had filed registration forms ahead of the Jan. 1 deadline. Those registrations covered roughly 69,000 firearms that fall under the ban as well as nearly 43,000 accessories.

It is not known what percentage that represents of the total number of assault weapons and banned accessories in circulation in Illinois, but many people have suggested that a large number of gun owners will refuse to comply with the registration requirement.

Cunningham, however, said he was not concerned about speculation of widespread noncompliance with the law. “I would just repeat what I said earlier, which is the law is in place, and I would encourage people to follow the law,” he said.

As recreational cannabis sales again hit record, Illinois AG calls for federal rescheduling CAPITOL NEWS ILLINOIS

As Illinois’ recreational cannabis industry once again reported record sales for 2023, the state’s attorney general is calling on the federal government to reclassify the substance.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency classifies cannabis as a Schedule 1 drug, meaning the federal government believes it has “no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse.”

But Attorney General Kwame Raoul and his counterparts in 11 other states are calling on a reclassification to Schedule 3, meaning it has “a moderate to low potential for physical and psychological dependence.”

Raoul and the other attorneys general said the reclassification would allow states to continue to “set the standard” for legal products, would allow businesses to take ordinary tax deductions, and would increase the ability to re-

search the substance to fully determine its effects.

“Illinois is one of several states that have established robust regulatory frameworks for legal cannabis sales,” Raoul said in a news release.

“State-regulated cannabis industries protect consumers from the dangers of unregulated products and the illicit market. Rescheduling cannabis will remove obstacles for legitimate businesses and allow them to better collaborate with law enforcement and regulators.”

Last year, Illinois recreational cannabis dispensaries sold a record $1.6 billion of product, accompanied by a record number of sales to Illinois residents.

Sales to out-of-state residents, however, fell by $71 million from 2022’s total, marking the first drop in that category since cannabis was legalized on a recreational basis in January 2020.

The growth in 2023 marked a 5 percent increase from the year prior, meaning the pace of the industry’s growth is slowing. From its first year of legalization to its second, sales grew by 106 percent, while in 2022, growth was marked at 12 percent from the year prior.

Lawmakers introduce bill to create state prescription drug price oversight board A new bill in the Illinois General Assembly would create a board of health care experts that would have the authority to set price limits on prescription medications.

House Bill 4472 was introduced Jan.17 by Rep. Nabeela Syed, D-Palatine, and Sen. David Koehler, D-Peoria. The bill had not yet been assigned to committee as of Jan. 17, although House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch signed on as a cosponsor.

In addition to more services now available online at ilsos.gov as a part of Giannoulias’ “Do-it-Online, Skip-the-Line” approach, the office has made design changes to its website to make all available online services more accessible and expanded eligibility for online driver’s license and state ID renewals.

Montini Catholic High School’s dance team—the Broncettes— will take part in this week’s IHSA competitive dance state meet at Grossinger Motors Arena in Bloomington. The Broncettes secured their state-meet berth with a third-place finish in the 1A level of Saturday’s IHSA sectional at Joliet West High School.

Fifteen teams competed in the 1A level at the Joliet West Sectional. The top six 1A teams at the sectional qualified for the state meet. Nazareth Academy delivered a first-place finish in the 1A level at the sectional. Providence Catholic finished second, while Montini placed third. The Glenbard East/South and Willowbrook boys bowling teams competed in Saturday’s 15-team IHSA sectional at Bertrand Bowling Lanes in Waukegan.

The top six teams at the sectional qualified for this week’s IHSA state meet, which will take place at St. Clair Bowl in downstate O’Fallon.

Additionally, the sectional’s top seven individuals who weren’t members of state-qualifying teams earned individual berths in the state meet.

The Glenbard East/South and Willowbrook teams did not qualify for the state meet.

Bowlers from the two teams were also unable to earn any individual state-meet berths.

Grayslake Central won the sectional title in Waukegan with its total score of 6,074. Vernon Hills (6,001), Glenbrook North (5,984), Glenbard North (5,862), McHenry (5,856) and Lake Zurich (5,847) also secured state-meet berths at the sectional.

The combined team of players from Glenbard East and Glenbard South, known as the Ramders, finished 10th at the sectional with its total of 5,377. The Willowbrook boys bowling program completed its inaugural season with a 12th-place total of 5,350 at the sectional.

Junior Nathan Dodmead led Willowbrook at the sectional with his six-game total of 1,214, which was 16 pins behind the total score (1,230) of the bowler who earned the seventh individual state-meet berth at the event. Dodmead opened the sectional with a 180 in his first game. He then fired scores of 265 and 228 in his second and third games. Dodmead completed the sectional with scores of 157, 189 and 195 in his final three games.

Willowbrook junior Tommy Whiting bowled a six-game total of 1,125 at the sectional. Junior Dean Romano compiled a six-game sectional score of 1,107 for the Warriors.

when the officer located the vehicle, later determined to be driven by Castro, Castro put his car in reverse and proceeded southbound on Route 83. It is alleged that as the officer pursued, Castro reached speeds of approximately 107 mph in a 45-mph zone and disobeyed three traffic lights.

It is alleged that near 16th Street, Castro completed a U-turn and continued driving northbound on Route 83 reaching speeds of approximately 100 mph in a 35-mph construction zone, at which time the pursuing officer lost sight of the vehicle.

A short time later, the vehicle was located abandoned in a school parking lot. Officers responded to the school parking and at approximately 8:42 p.m., located Castro approximately one block away from the school. He was then taken into custody after a brief struggle with the officers.

Castro’s next court appearance is scheduled July 27 for arraignment in front of Judge Telander.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Villa Park Chief of Police Michael Rivas announced that bond has been set for a Florida man accused of leading Omar Castro police on a high-speed chase.

Omar Castro, 22, appeared at a bond hearing where Judge Michael Reidy set bond at $100,000.

Castro is charged with two counts of aggravated fleeing and eluding a police officer (Class 4 felony) and multiple misdemeanor and petty traffic offenses including two counts of aggravated speeding in a construction zone, reckless driving and driving while license suspended, all Class A misdemeanors.

Reggie Meadows, died after suffering a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

Deputy Chief Eric Swanson of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office said in a news conference Sunday, June 18 that at least two other victims were in critical condition.

“The motive behind this incident is unclear,” Swanson said. “This is still an active investigation.”

“We are working around the clock to bring those responsible to justice,” the sheriff’s office said in a recent post on Twitter, urging anyone with information to call 630-407-2343.

The Juneteenth celebration started at around 6 p.m. Saturday, June 17.

According to the Daily Herald, DuPage County Sheriff’s deputies had been monitoring the celebration, but responded to a 911 call of a fight that had broken out nearby.

While deputies were investigating that call, they heard gunshots and

“Out of nowhere, there was a major gunfight for like 30 seconds,” eyewitness Bartosz Majerczyk told ABC 7 Eyewitness News. “I’d say, 60 plus rounds. You could tell it was two different groups of people shooting at each other.”

Another witness, who said she was at the celebration, told ABC 7 Eyewitness News “everybody started running” when the gunfire erupted.

“There was a man,” she said. “He fell on top of me. He had a gunshot wound to his leg. It was like something you can’t imagine.”

In a statement, Governor JB Pritzker said he is closely monitoring the shooting.

“Gathering for a holiday celebration should be a joyful occasion, not a time when gunfire erupts and families are forced to run for safety,” Gov. Pritzker said. “As I’ve said time and

health emergency in this country and I remain committed to banning these dangerous weapons and making our state safer for everyone.”

Meadows was described as a “devoted father whose life was tragically taken from us amidst a Juneteenth celebration” on a GoFundMe page set up to provide support to his two young children, RJ and Gabby.

Meadows was “a beacon of love and strength, who fell victim to a devastating crossfire incident that shattered the peace and joy of what should have been a day of celebration.

“Amidst the chaos, Reggie tragically lost his life, leaving an indelible mark of grief on his family and community. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the other victims who were injured, as we mourn the loss of Reggie, a remarkable individual who touched the lives of many.”

On the participation side, our good and dearly missed colleague, the late Rep. Don McEachin, has developed his “Environmental Justice for All” Act to help ensure that historically marginalized communities have a seat at the table. We’ve taken much of Don’s good work and applied it to the transmission system to make sure folks have the information and resources to participate on a level playing field. We’ve also leveraged existing FERC orders to help ensure that communities who bear a cost associated with a new energy investment also get to share in the profits from that operation should they choose to do so.

Snyder’s 3-point barrage leads Rams to thrilling win

After a scoreless first half against Willowbrook, sophomore drains four 3-point shots and scores 20 points in second half; his late 3-pointer lifts Rams to 66-65 win

The Glenbard East boys basketball team picked up two wins in a 24hour period to raise its overall season record to 8-13.

The Rams pounded Streamwood 76-49 in Friday’s Upstate Eight Conference game in Lombard. Glenbard East improved its conference record to 7-3 with Friday’s victory.

The Rams edged Willowbrook 66-65 in Saturday’s wild non-conference contest in Villa Park. Glenbard East trailed the Warriors 65-63 in the closing seconds, but sophomore Danny Snyder sank a 3-point shot with about two seconds to play to deliver what turned out to be the game-winning basket.

Snyder did not score any points in the first half of Saturday’s game.

He made five field goals, including one 3-point shot, in the third quarter.

He then drained three critical 3-point shots in the fourth quarter to produce a team-leading 20 points.

Glenbard East led Willowbrook 18-14 after one quarter of Saturday’s game. The Rams held a 31-24 halftime lead, and a 50-46 advantage at the end of the third quarter.

The Warriors took a 53-52 lead with a little more than 5:30 left in the fourth quarter. Two free throws raised Willowbrook’s lead to 55-52 with 4:58 to play.

Snyder’s first 3-point basket of the fourth quarter evened the score at 57-57 with 3:45 remaining. Willowbrook scored a basket to take a 65-60 lead with a little more than one minute to play. Snyder then delivered his second 3-point field goal of the quarter, which cut the Warriors’ lead to 65-63 with 1:01 on the clock.

Glenbard East missed a pair of free throws with 22.6 seconds remaining, but the Rams came down with the rebound after the second missed free throw. After taking a timeout with 17.5 seconds to play, Glenbard East worked the ball around the perimeter of the 3-point arc. The left-handed Snyder then launched a 3-point shot from the right wing. The ball hit the rim and bounced up in the air before rattling through the hoop to give the Rams a 66-65 lead and set off a raucous celebration on the Glenbard East sideline.

The game was far from over after Snyder’s go-ahead basket. After his shot went in, Willowbrook called a timeout with two seconds to play.

The Warriors then inbounded the ball from under their own basket. Glenbard East senior Aleks Jajic jumped to grab the long pass out of the air.

“We led the entire way in the first three quarters, then we gave up the lead,” said Glenbard East coach Eric Kelly after Saturday’s win in Villa Park. “It just shows the character of our team. Our guys stuck around.

We got really good leadership from

our seniors—Aleks Jajic and Ari Pierson—they were really big. Our sophomore—Danny Snyder—really stepped up.”

Jajic and Pierson complemented Snyder’s 20-point output by scoring 17 points each for Glenbard East in Saturday’s win. Sophomore Michael Nee contributed six points, while junior Devin Kraft added five points.

Junior Mateo Villalvazo contributed one point with a second-quarter free throw.

The Rams raced out to an ear-

ly 19-2 lead in Friday’s conference game against Streamwood. Nee provided 17 points in the victory over the Sabres.

Glenbard East’s schedule this week includes conference games against South Elgin and West Chicago, along with this Saturday’s non-conference matchup with Antioch in a shootout event in Richton Park.

The Rams will face West Chicago in this Friday’s conference meeting in Lombard.

Nine-game winning streak ends, but Montini rebounds from loss to post two straight victories

The Montini Catholic girls basketball team won two of three games last week to raise its overall season record to 17-5.

The Broncos’ nine-game winning streak ended with a 55-46 loss to Whitney Young in a Coach Kipp Hoopsfest game at Benet Academy in Lisle on Jan. 15. Montini bounced back from that loss to beat Fenwick 62-34 in Lombard on Jan. 18. The Broncos earned a 60-49 home win over a highly regarded Michigan team—Detroit Country Day—on Saturday.

Montini trailed Whitney Young 14-13 after one quarter of last week’s game in Lisle. The Dolphins led the Broncos 29-21 at halftime and 41-36 at the end of the third quarter. Montini trimmed Whitney Young’s lead to as few as four points during the fourth quarter.

Montini senior Victoria Matulevicius scored 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds during last week’s loss to the Dolphins. Junior Nikki Kerstein contributed 10 points and five assists for the Broncos, while senior Alyssa Epps provided eight points and six rebounds.

Montini improved its Girls Catholic Athletic Conference (GCAC) Red Division record to 4-2 with last week’s home victory over Fenwick.

The Broncos led the Friars 22-6 after one quarter and 43-15 at halftime.

Montini’s lead swelled to 60-26 by the end of the third quarter.

Matulevicius scored a team-leading 17 points during the Broncos’ Jan. 18 win over Fenwick. Junior Shea Carver drained a pair of 3-point shots and tallied 10 points for Montini. Kerstein supplied eight points, while juniors Peyton Farrell and Natalie Gartlan scored six points each. Epps netted five points. Junior Audrey Kinney added four points.

Juniors Lauren Mellish and Lily Spanos contributed three points each.

The visiting Yellowjackets from Detroit Country Day led Montini 18-14 after one quarter of Saturday afternoon’s contest in Lombard. The Broncos trailed Detroit Country Day 21-16 with three minutes left in the second quarter. Montini closed the quarter with an 11-4 burst to take a 27-25 halftime lead. Carver sank a corner 3-point shot during the 11-4 run. Her basket gave the Broncos a 25-21 lead with less than two minutes to play in the first half.

Montini led Detroit Country Day 36-34 with three minutes remaining in the third quarter. A pair of baskets from Matulevicius and a 3-point field goal from Kerstein helped the Broncos extend their lead to 43-36 with eight minutes to play.

Matulevicius scored two baskets early in the fourth quarter. Kerstein added a layup to raise the Broncos’

lead to 49-40 with 4:40 remaining.

Farrell made a pair of free throws with 3:30 left in the game. Kerstein and Carver sank two free throws each during the final minute to help Montini seal the win.

Matulevicius scored 20 points and pulled down eight rebounds in her team’s victory over the Yellowjackets. Kerstein contributed 17 points, six assists, four rebounds and four steals. Carver and Epps provided eight and seven points, respectively.

Farrell supplied six points and four rebounds. Kinney added two points.

The Broncos’ schedule this week includes games against Marist, Saint Ignatius, Rosary and Schaumburg.

The Rams led the Sabres 22-4 at the end of the first quarter and 3310 at halftime. Glenbard East’s lead stood at 47-20 at the end of the third quarter.

Johnson made two more 3-point shots during the game— one in the second quarter and one in the fourth quarter. Warriors win team championship at Riverside-Brookfield The Willowbrook girls gymnastics team outscored eight other teams to win the title at Saturday’s Riverside-Brookfield High School Bulldog Varsity Invitational.

The Warriors earned an overall score of 131.25 at Saturday’s invitational. Hinsdale South (128.95) finished second, while Glenbard South (126.825) and Riverside-Brookfield (124.5) placed third and fourth, respectively.

Willowbrook junior Naomi Campbell won the invitational’s allaround title with her score of 34.675.

Senior Mia McBride of the Warriors finished second in the all-around standings with her total of 34.225.

Campbell delivered a first-place score of 9.0 in floor exercises at

the invitational. She turned in second-place performances on the vault (8.8) and the uneven bars (8.575).

Campbell placed fourth on the balance beam (8.3).

McBride received second-place honors in floor exercises (8.95), finishing right behind Campbell in that event. McBride won fourth-place medals on the vault (8.6) and the uneven bars (8.475). She turned in a sixth-place finish on the balance beam (8.2).

Willowbrook sophomore Kaia Capulong contributed a 10th-place finish in the invitational’s all-around competition (31.475). Freshman Lillian Macias of the Warriors finished in a tie for 19th in the all-around standings (30.0). Freshman Mallory

Yeazel provided Willowbrook with a 21st-place score of 29.825 in the allaround totals.

Capulong earned a tie for sixth on the vault (8.5) and placed eighth on the balance beam (8.0). Yeazel tied for 10th on the vault (8.425). Macias finished 11th in floor exercises (8.0).

Two days before competing in Saturday’s invitational at Riverside-Brookfield, the Warriors faced Downers Grove South in a West Suburban Gold Conference dual meet in Downers Grove. The Mustangs defeated the Warriors 143.5-128.35 in the Jan. 18 meet.

Warriors end losing streak with win over Blazers One day after beating Addison Trail, Willowbrook suffers 66-65 loss to Glenbard East

The Willowbrook boys basketball team played a pair of interesting home games against nearby rivals on Friday and Saturday night.

The Warriors ended a seven-game losing streak when they beat Addison Trail 72-62 in Friday’s West Suburban Gold Conference game in Villa Park. Willowbrook raised its conference record to 2-3 with its 10-point win over the Blazers.

The Warriors’ overall season record slipped to 7-15 following Saturday’s 66-65 non-conference loss to Glenbard East. The visiting Rams trailed Willowbrook 65-63 in the closing seconds, but a 3-point basket from Glenbard East sophomore Danny Snyder gave the Rams the lead.

The Warriors then missed a last-second shot as the buzzer sounded.

Willowbrook’s losing streak reached seven games after four losses at Wheaton Warrenville South’s Martin Luther King Jr. Tournament.

After losing a pair of games at the tournament on Saturday, Jan. 13, the Warriors suffered two more losses at the event on Monday, Jan. 15.

Plainfield Central earned a 74-59 win over Willowbrook in one of the Jan. 15 contests. The Warriors closed out the tournament with a 72-51 loss to Glenbard North.

Addison Trail held a 23-15 lead after one quarter of Friday’s conference battle in Villa Park. The visiting Blazers led the Warriors 33-31 at halftime.

Willowbrook owned a 51-48 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Addison Trail junior Luke Smith made a 3-point shot in the first minute of the fourth quarter to even the score at 51-51. Willowbrook senior Noah Boyd drained a 3-point shot to give his team a 54-51 lead with 6:20 to play. Boyd’s long-range basket began a 16-2 run by the Warriors, who owned a 67-53 lead with a little less than two minutes to play.

Willowbrook sophomore Otis Powell provided 22 points and eight rebounds during Friday’s win over the Blazers. Senior Andrew Ciesinski contributed 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Warriors. Boyd scored 12 points, while sophomore Jaylen Griffin and junior Jaden Royal tallied nine and eight points, respectively.

Smith piled up 12 field goals, including three baskets from 3-point range, and sank 11 of 12 free-throw attempts to score 38 points for the Blazers in Friday’s loss. Smith scored 18 points in the first half and tacked on 20 points in the second half.

Addison Trail dropped to 6-14 overall and 1-4 in conference play following Friday’s loss to the Warriors.

Glenbard East led the Warriors 18-14 through one quarter of Saturday’s battle. The Rams led Willowbrook 31-24 at halftime and 50-46 at the end of the third quarter.

Warriors suffer three straight losses Team’s conference record falls to 6-3 after loss at Hinsdale South

The Willowbrook girls basketball team’s overall season record fell to 10-15 following three losses last week.

The Warriors began the week with a 54-15 loss to Hersey at the Coach Kipp Hoopsfest event at Benet Academy in Lisle on Monday, Jan. 15.

Willowbrook lost 53-33 to York in Elmhurst on Jan. 17. The Warriors completed the week with Saturday’s 51-36 West Suburban Gold Conference loss at Hinsdale South. Willowbrook’s conference record dropped to 6-3 following Saturday’s loss to the Hornets.

York held a 15-8 lead over the Warriors after one quarter of last week’s contest. The Dukes owned a 26-16 halftime lead. York extended its lead to 36-21 by the end of the third quarter.

Bruschuk supplied 11 points and nine rebounds in Saturday’s loss at Hinsdale South. McIntyre, who made a pair of 3-point shots, scored eight points. Gusman and Vish contributed seven and six points, respectively.

One week before facing Hinsdale South, the Warriors earned a 45-35 conference victory at Addison Trail on Jan. 13.
