The DuPage County Board voted on Jan. 15 to officially dissolve the DuPage Election Commission into the County Clerk’s Office, completing a multi-year process to consolidate the sixth unit of government under the County’s ACT Initiative. The action comes as a result of the enactment of Public Act 100-0628, which was passed by the General Assembly in May 2018 and signed by Gov. Bruce Rauner in July 2018.

“Today marks the conclusion of our efforts to bring greater oversight to the Election Commission and the election process by folding its operations into the County Clerk’s Office,” said County Board Chairman Dan Cronin. “The Election Commission staff performed admirably during the latest election, and we have faith the transition to the Clerk will be a smooth process.”

DuPage County began soliciting public input on the proposed consolidation of the DuPage Election Commission in 2017. In March 2018, a majority of DuPage County voters said they were in favor of consolidating the Election Commission into the Clerk’s Office.

Through this merger, DuPage County taxpayers can expect the County to save at least $300,000 annually. The County Board approved the consolidation by a vote of 11-7.

Pappas seeks public input Innovative ideas for legislation from community welcome

State Rep. Diane Pappas (D-Itasca) is reaching out to local residents for the purpose of getting new ideas to assist her in creating new legislation and making fixes to current laws for the 2019 legislative session.

“The best legislation comes from local citizens and community leaders,” said Pappas. “I hope to hear from local residents on what issues and legislative ideas will directly impact our families and neighborhoods. It’s my responsibility to listen to the requests of the people I serve and to make sure that I advocate for what matters most to our community. That’s why I’m reaching out to citizens across the district to give them the opportunity to be involved in the legislative process and to offer their ideas. Residents will always have a voice on the legislation I introduce and support.”

Pappas is requesting local residents to submit new ideas for legislation to her constituent service office for review. Residents will also have the opportunity to testify on their ideas in a committee hearing if their ideas are introduced as legislation. Pappas believes it is essential to seek community input on legislative ideas in order to provide the best representation possible for the 45th district.

“There is power in your voice, and I encourage all residents to submit potential ideas,” said Pappas. “All the residents in the community I represent will have a platform to make their voices heard. As the new state representative, my door is always open, and I encourage anyone in the district to stop by my office with ideas, concerns or any other matters where I could be of assistance. I look forward to working with the residents to improve our district and the state of Illinois.”

Lombard citizens save 96-year-old woman from being struck by train Lombard Police Officer Dan Herrera responded to a call of a car on the railroad tracks at the intersection of St. Charles Road and Grace Street in Lombard, at approximately 8:15 on the evening of Jan. 14.

Herrera was close to the location and was on scene within two minutes of the original call.

Upon arriving, Herrera identified the vehicle on the tracks and two citizens who had left their own vehicles to assist the driver.

The driver, Antoinette Lazarra, 96, of Burr Ridge, had been reported missing earlier that morning by her family. She was driving a 2006 Lincoln Zephyr eastbound on St. Charles, attempting to make a right hand turn on Grace Street, when she lost control of her vehicle and drove onto the tracks.

Stephen Spapperi, 19, of Lombard,

was driving northbound on Grace Street, approaching the intersection, when he observed a car lose control and drive eastbound onto the railroad tracks.

Justin Mueller, 24, of Lombard, was driving behind Spapperi and also observed the car drive onto the tracks and get stuck. Both citizens exited their vehicles to assist the driver before police arrived.

Herrera, along with Spapperi and Mueller, assisted Lazarra out of her vehicle and off of the tracks. Shortly after that time, Metra Train #134, traveling westbound on the tracks, collided with Lazarra’s vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle was treated at the scene by Lombard paramedic/firefighters. She appeared disoriented and was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital for tests and observation.

Police Reports Area police departments recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Addison Jan. 16 Police said Luis E. Maldonado-Nunez, 28, of Aurora, was found to have a failure to appear warrant out of the Kane County Sheriff’s Department for driving while license revoked in the 200 block of N. Kennedy at around 11:18 a.m. Maldonado-Nunez also was charged with driving while license revoked and no seat belt.

Police said Braulio P. Reyna, 34, of Bensenville, had a failure to appear warrant out of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Department for driving while license suspended, and uninsured motor vehicle in the 1200

block of Capitol Drive at around 5:12 a.m.

Police said Orlando Sanchez-Torres, 45, of West Chicago, had an original warrant out of the Indiana Parole Board for fugitive of justice in the 700 block of W. Winthrop at around 11:05 a.m.

Jan. 15 Police said a 25-year-old man from Berkeley had an original warrant out of the Addison Police Department for domestic battery at around 10:56 p.m.

Jan. 14 Luis F. Lool-Jacobo, 25, of Addison, was charged with DUI, leaving the scene of an accident, no valid driver’s license and failure to reduce speed to avoid and accident subsequent to officers responding to a hitand-run accident in the 400 block of S. Park at around 10:18 p.m.

Jan. 12 Selvin A. Lopez-Lopez, 34, of Addison, was charged with DUI and improper lane usage near Lake and Mill at around 11 p.m.

Jan. 11 Police said Deonta D. Upchurch, 22, of Villa Park, had a failure to appear warrant out of the Will County Sheriff’s Department for a traffic offense near Mill and St. John at around 8:47 p.m.

Jan. 7 Gregory J. Clark, 22, of Villa Park, was charged with theft in the 400 block of N. Ardmore at around 9:34 a.m.

A 34-year-old Elmhurst man was charged with two counts of domestic battery in the 800 block of S. Grant at around 1:07 a.m.

Man found guilty of First Degree murder of Wheaton woman Further examination of the area revealed a shallow grave in which officers discovered Valez. She had been stabbed 39 times. An investigation led by the Glen Ellyn Police Department and the Major Crimes Task Force revealed that at some time in the evening of Sept. 24, 2013, Valez and Ester had gone to Panfish Park together.

Joy in our 70s and 60s and 80s and 50s and 90s and 40s….

An article that appeared in the New York Times on Jan. 12, written by Mary Pipher, a clinical psychologist and author, was sent to me by a friend who said, “This sounds just like you!” (Thanks, Don!).

Mary states that happiness is a skill and a choice. Amen. I’ve been preaching that to clients and myself for the last decade or more. She also writes, “Our happiness comes from self-knowledge, emotional intelligence, and empathy for others.”

What is fascinating is that her vantage point and the title of the article is “The Joy of Being a Woman in Her 70s.” We absolutely do not have to wait until we are in our 70s to expand our capacity for happiness.

The key to all things in life is awareness. What are you paying attention to?

If you look for idiots, you will find them. If you look for kind people, you will find them. If you seek beauty, love, trust, fun, compassion, you will roll around in it. If you choose to look for the worst, that is what you will see.

It’s always our choice.

learned to look every day for humor, love and beauty. Happiness is built by attitude and intention.”

At any age, it is never too late to be intentional!

I just had a visit with my friend Bernice who will be 95 in April.

Every other word out of her mouth is “I have been so blessed. I have had such a good life.” She is sprite and chipper and healthy because of her attitude and intention.

This article quotes jazz great, Jane Jarvis, “I have everything I need to be happy right between my ears.”

Yes. My sweet Prince Charming shares that same sentiment regularly and he is a mere lad in his 50s.

Mary rattles off a list of things that women in their 70s can do now with the gift of aging and several decades of life experience, “We can be kinder to ourselves as well as

more honest and authentic….We can listen to our hearts.”

I agree with every fiber of my being AND I am equally adamant that it starts this second, ladies and fellas. However old you are, it is time to be you, fully you, unabashedly you, unapologetically you. It is time to be kind to you. It always is time to listen to the heart.

My workshops now all focus on listening to your heart, be it a life visioning workshop or write your book workshop. The answers are within. Our guidance system for life comes equipped at birth. We simply are not taught how to operate it.

If you want to feel more at peace inside, start paying attention to what you pay attention to. Make a point to look for kindness or beauty every day for the next week. (For the rest of your life.)

Simple gestures of kindness, little bits of beauty, everything is in the eye of the beholder. What do you behold? What do you want more of?

Focus on that.

This seemingly simple exercise in attention has a profound impact.

Perhaps you just ask yourself while you are brushing your teeth in the morning, “What will I look for today?”

See what happens. Do you want to be happier as you age? This is where it begins.

Bettering bacon: Make the grease into a candle

There’s a saying: “Everything’s better with bacon.” And it’s true.

Bacon is greasy and crunchy. It’s chewy and salty. It’s delectable and balanced. Bacon is akin to nature’s perfect food.

I’d never contemplated the idea of improving bacon. I don’t think many people have. Bacon is great flying solo or combined with any number of foods – both savory and sweet, from the traditional breakfast fodder to sprinkled on a luncheon salad or draped around a dinner steak. You can even dip it in chocolate for a flavor combination that’s just about beyond this world.

When God created bacon it was a good day.

So making bacon better? It should be impossible, or nearly so. At least that’s what I thought.

Then, last weekend, I made bacon.

And I was left with the dilemma most baconistas encounter: What to do with the inevitable grease?

Since the beginning of time, I’ve been using heat proof containers – empty soup cans, milk cartons and pickle jars – to dispose of the grease before placing it in the garbage. You aren’t supposed to wash that bad boy down the sink, unless you want to clog your sink. (Reference my plumbing column from November

2018 for my views on that unneeded adventure.)

Anyhow, last Sunday Funday it was just the two of us - me and the grease.

I looked around the kitchen for an empty can or otherwise suitable vessel for discarding purposes. Seeing none, I hit upon my Eureka moment.

Quick sidebar here: I’ve recently taken to making candles. As I scanned my kitchen for a suitable place to get rid of the bacon grease, I spotted an empty candle jar waiting for its wax. I knew exactly what I was going to do and where I’d pour my bacon grease.

You’re right in guessing the candle jar. Yep. I made myself a little, albeit delectable, bacon grease candle. It hardened up nicely – not as hard as a regular candle, but hey, on previous occasions the bacon grease would have been garbage. I call that nothing

short of magic.

I let the candle cure for a few days before lighting the wick. It burned nicely. It didn’t smell like bacon, but I never claimed this is a perfect world.

I suppose this exposes my inner weirdness. Who makes a candle out of bacon grease? Someone not wanting to clog her sink or add unneeded garbage into her can. Someone who makes something out of nothing.

Someone who sees the candle jar as half full. Someone who thinks outside the box in ways that take bacon from a great addition to breakfast to a multi-tasking two-fer.

Bacon – it’s not just for breakfast (or lunch or dinner or dessert) anymore! It’s an accessory to your tablescape! It’s a candle for goodness sake! That is a wow in my world.

(Again, inner weirdness but when

you’re going for broke you might as well go all the way.)

I could go on and on, but I probably already have.

I’ve since made more bacon candles. What can I say? My family likes bacon. It’s a Sunday treat. Not to mention an ingredient for candles. I’ll take a two-fer product anyway of the week. But I’m not done. My bacon has been elevated beyond even that.

It’s the topic of this column. That, my friends, brings it to the trifecta level of a three-fer.

Elgin woman gets 28 years for burning Roselle townhome

Following a brief verbal altercation, Odio stabbed the woman several times with a sharp knife-like object and attempted to suffocate her with a plastic bag. The woman was able to free herself from the attack and retreated to an upstairs room. Odio then started a fire on the first floor of the townhouse before fleeing in a vehicle that was parked in the driveway that did not belong to her. The woman and another occupant of the townhome were forced to jump from the second floor of the townhouse to escape the fire. An investigation led to Odio who was taken into custody the following afternoon without incident.

On July 27, 2017, Judge Brian Jacobs set bond at $2 million with 10% to apply. She has remained in custody since that time.

“In the middle of the night, Chavez Odio broke into a Roselle townhome, stabbed and attempted to suffocate one of the occupants and then set fire to the home forcing two occupants to jump from a second story window to escape,” Berlin said. “This afternoon, Ms. Odio learned that for this outrageous behavior she will spend the next 28 years of her life behind bars. Thankfully, neither of the victims were seriously injured. … Ms. Odio was

identified as a suspect and taken into custody later that same day.”

Odio must serve 85% of her sentence before being eligible for parole.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced on Thursday, Jan. 17 that an Elgin woman will serve 28 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections Chavez Odio for setting fire to a Roselle townhouse and attacking one of the occupants of the residence in 2017.

Chavez Odio, 30, appeared in court this afternoon where she entered a plea of guilty to one count of Attempt Murder and one count of Aggravated Arson. Both charges are a Class X Felony. Odio entered her plea in front of Judge George Bakalis who will formally sentence Odio on Feb. 14, 2019.

At approximately 2:30 a.m. on July 25, 2017, firefighters with the Roselle Fire Department responded to a call of a fire on Circle Avenue in Roselle. An investigation into the matter led by the Roselle Police Department and the DuPage County Fire Investigation Task Force found that at approximately 2 a.m. Odio entered the townhouse and was confronted by a female occupant of the home.

Deferral program helps seniors meet property tax obligations Application period is now open On Tuesday, Jan. 15, DuPage County Treasurer Gwen Henry announced the opening of the application period for the Senior Citizen Real Estate Tax Deferral Program.

The Program allows qualifying seniors, aged 65 years and older, to defer up to $5,000 of their property taxes until the time they sell their home.

“To qualify, the applicant’s household income cannot exceed $55,000,” said DuPage County Treasurer Gwen Henry. “Additionally, the property must be used exclusively for residential purposes. The deferral is treated as a loan and accrues at 6 percent simple interest until paid.”

Unfortunately, many seniors are unaware of this worthwhile program.

“To increase awareness, our office is once again working with local churches and other organizations to help inform seniors about the existence of the Senior Citizen Real Estate Tax Deferral Program,” Henry added.

Henry said that application forms were automatically mailed to last year’s participants.

County Coroner releases 2018 opioid statistics DuPage County Coroner Richard Jorgensen, M.D. has completed evaluation of the Opioid related deaths for 2018.

“The Opioid epidemic continues to escalate and destroy the lives of too many DuPage County residents,” Dr. Jorgensen said. “The influx of potent synthetic opiates including fentanyl has increased significantly, and now represents a higher percentage of illicit drug usage and cause of death than heroin alone.

“I and my office remain committed to continue our efforts to fight against this plague through education, support of drug treatment and the DuPage County Narcan® Program.”

Fun with Robots at Indian Trail fosters creative thinking

Staying after school isn’t usually thought of as fun.

However, on Wednesday, Jan. 16, students at Addison Dist. 4 Indian Trail Junior High School were eager to stay late. Why? One word: Robots!

Representatives of the DuPage County Regional Office of Education visited the school to lead students in an after-school robot workshop.

The students used “Ozobots” which follow pathways drawn on paper. Participants learned the color code combinations that make the little robots perform different functions including turning, rotating

in place speeding up and sowing down and even changing colors.

The first exercise was setting up miniature bowling pins and learning how to draw pathways to make the Ozobot’s knock down all the pins. The next project had students drawing individual pathways and connecting them into one giant maze on the classroom floor.

Problem solving and creative thinking were emphasized as students thought of ways to connect their mazes and have their robots chase each other.

District 88 Board submits resolution in support of statewide access to property tax relief grants As District 88 has previously shared, Illinois recently implemented a school funding law that looks to achieve adequacy and equity in education funding throughout the state.

That Evidence Based Funding law also provides money for a Property Tax Relief Grant.

The intent of that program is to assist communities in Illinois that are experiencing a significant local property tax burden due to limited local property wealth. It’s an opportunity to lower the property tax burden on local taxpayers, with the state replacing a portion of foregone tax revenue with state funds.

District 88 has applied for this grant on behalf of the property taxpayers of the district

and Illinois. However, the district is concerned there isn’t sufficient funding allocated to fully and effectively implement this program to support all eligible communities. During its Jan. 14 meeting, the District 88 Board of Education approved submitting a resolution to address concerns regarding the underfunding by the state for property tax relief. That resolution was sent to State Senators Tom Cullerton and Don Harmon; State Representatives Deb Conroy, Deanne Mazzochi, Terra Costa Howard and Kathleen Willis; Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker; State Superintendent Dr. Tony Smith; and Peg Agnos, Executive Director of Legislative Education Network of DuPage (LEND).

Sports Addison Trail girls basketball team defeats ICCP and Hoffman Estates Birmingham hits game-winning 3-pointer against ICCP

The Addison Trail girls basketball team scored recent non-conference wins against IC Catholic Prep and Hoffman Estates.

The Blazers were 43-42 winners over IC Catholic Prep when freshman Quiana Birmingham hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

“We ran a play and they covered it, all three options to get the ball,” said Schader. “We were able to get the ball back and Q banked in a 3 at the buzzer to win it.”

Serena Gilliam led the Blazers with 14 points. Birmingham had eight points.

“It was a battle,” said Schader.

“We were up seven or eight points and maybe even a little more, but they came back and took the lead.

We battled back and took the lead.

We missed six free throws in the fourth quarter.”

Addison Trail then downed Hoffman Estates 52-28 in a non-conference game. “We dominated,” said Schader.

Mia Johnson led the Blazers with 14 points. Birmingham had 11 points, while Demi Koulogeorgas

had 10 points. Addison Trail shot 6-for-8 from the 3-point line.

“It was a breakout game for us,” said Schader.

The Blazers then lost 49-45 to Morton in West Suburban Conference Gold Division action. Johnson had 12 points. Koulogeorgas had 10 points, while Gilliam and Karime Martinez each had eight points.

“We were up 22-11 at one point and then Morton went on a run,” said Schader. “They cut it to four and then it was a battle back and forth and they took the lead. We missed a bunch of layups and easy buckets. We didn’t play terrible, but we struggled at times. It was a tough game that we hoped to pull out.”

The loss put Addison Trail at 9-12 overall. The Blazers were slated to play Proviso East and Willowbrook (Friday) this week before facing Maine East next Monday.

“We have a tough week ahead,” said Schader late last week. “We are getting better. Offensively we are shooting more and scoring more and defensively we are playing a little better. We struggled offensively against Morton, but it was a long week for us. We’re starting to spread the scoring out more and other kids are getting involved. We’re playing pretty well but we have a tough couple weeks coming up.”

The Fenton girls basketball team split a pair of recent contests with Ridgewood and Elk Grove.

Fenton was victorious 56-22 against Ridgewood in a Metro Suburban Conference Red Division game and also lost 75-56 to Elk Grove in a non-conference game.

The split put Fenton at 11-10 overall and 6-3 in MSC Red Division action.

Coach Dave Mello noted one recent positive has been the play of freshmen Hailey Miller and Sophia Haska.

“It’s really exciting watching our two freshmen develop and start to assert themselves at the varsity level,” he said. “Both Hailey and Sophia have started to string together really strong games. Both of them are shooting the 3, rebounding, playing

“We are consistently getting deflec-

tions that are either leading to steals or taking the other team out of their normal offensive flow. Even against Elk Grove, we were happy with the pressure we applied. We have been really happy with our defense. We are much-improved from last season.

The girls are getting much better at reading what the offense is trying to do against us.”

Fenton shot 8-for-65 from the 3-point line against Ridgewood, but made 11 in the game against Elk Grove. “We really struggled shooting the 3 at Ridgewood,” said Mello. “We went 4-for-39 in the first half and then followed that up with a 4-for-26 second half. However, at Elk Grove, we shot our best percentage of the season. We finished with 11 made 3s, but we just couldn’t get our usual number of attempts up as they were making an effort to take away the 3. That allowed us to use

our inside game, which has really been improving.”

Mello said Fenton must continue to work on its game from the foul line. “We will always need to get better at free throws,” he said. “We are working more and more free throws into our practices, and the girls are spending time before and after practice trying to improve our percentage.”

Senior Teagan Hausen and junior Ashley Milano also have been key contributors to Mello’s squad. “Teagan is really creating a lot of problems at the point of our defense with her length,” he said. “She is getting all kinds of deflections and steals On offense, she is consistently finishing around the rim when given the opportunity. Ashley has been locked in from the 3-point line. She has had back-to-back games with four made 3s, and even her misses have looked

like they were going in. She is another one that is all over the court on defense.”

Mello also is excited about the program’s weight-room usage and the benefits it has provided. “For the first time in the program’s history, we consistently use the weight room. We build in 30-45 minutes in each practice for the girls to get in the weight room. Tara Lawson, my assistant coach, developed a great program and the girls are doing an amazing job with it. We have seen all kinds of improvements in terms of their strength and their overall athleticism.

It has become a huge part of our season.”

Fenton played over this past weekend in its inaugural Martin Luther King tournament against Chicago Academy and Thornridge. The Bison played two more games in the tournament this past Monday.

Addison Trail-Willowbrook boys swimming team places second at Shepard invitational Also celebrates senior night against Morton as Burns, Zimmerman and Fagan honored

The Addison Trail-Willowbrook boys swimming team recently celebrated senior night during its West Suburban Conference Gold Division contest against Morton.

The team honored seniors Jack Burns (Willowbrook), Evan Zimmerman (Addison Trail) and Robert Fagan (Willowbrook).

“Each of these guys swam real-

ly well and had personal bests in each race,” noted AT-Willowbrook coach Neil Wahlgren. Robert Fagan dropped six seconds in the 200 IM and three seconds in the 100 free. It was a good senior meet for Robert.

Jack and Evan are two of our top guys and we kind of expect them to have fast times, but they dropped more time against Morton, which was good to see.”

AT-Willowbrook then took second out of 10 teams at the Shepard invitational. “Each of our guys swam well and dropped time in pretty much every event,” said Wahlgren.

“These last two meets we feel

like we are coming together and are becoming the team we expected to be. We’re showing growth and that has been fun. It will be fun watching these guys the rest of the year as we head into conference and sectionals.”

At Shepard, the AT-Willowbrook 200 medley relay team of Zimmerman, Willowbrook’s Aidan Nichols, Addison Trail’s Marco Chaidez and Burns won the event.

“Aidan Nichols also swam well in the 100 breaststroke and got second and was fourth for us in the 100 free,” said Wahlgren.

Burns was second in the 100 free and third in the 50 free.

“Each of our other relays got second place,” he said. “The nice thing about this invite is they have two frosh-soph relays and that shows how good the future of our team can be.”

Wahlgren also has been pleased with the progress of freshman Michael Niemirski from Addison Trail. “He’s been down mad time in every one of his events,” he said.

“He’s a freshman who is becoming a top-four guy competing for spots on those sectional relays. He’s also been a utility guy for us. We’ve used him in the 500 where he is a top-two guy and in the 100 free where he’s a top three or four guy.

He’s getting better and better as the year goes on.”

Willowbrook’s Sean Pienkos also has been a key contributor. “He’s a sophomore who was second in the 500 free. He’s another guy who works very hard in practice and is right behind our fastest guy. I know he will have an awesome taper and finish the year very strong.”

AT-Willowbrook swam against Fenton earlier this week. “We’re coming together at the end here,” said Wahlgren. “We have a smaller group than we’ve had in the past, but everybody is clicking into their places and everybody is getting in good shape for the end of the year.”

Timothy Christian boys basketball team scores two wins in Arizona Trojans playing well after holiday break

The Timothy Christian boys basketball team recently headed to Arizona as part of the school’s annual Renew initiative that engages students in discipleship opportunities through coursework, internships and service and/or travel experience not available to students during the academic semester.

While there, the Trojans played a pair of non-conference games and downed Gilbert Christian and Rancho Solano. Timothy defeated Gilbert by five points and defeated Rancho Solano by six points.

“We played a quality Gilbert Christian team and also played a talented Rancho Solano team,” said Timothy Christian coach Scott Plaisier. “We played two good games down there.

We rebounded the ball much better overall in both games. We’re doing a better job on the glass. Defensively we are kind of coming around a little.

The guys are getting in good position and they are doing a better job with individual defense.”

Plaisier was impressed with the play of Danardo Jones in Arizona.

“We are getting good minutes from Danardo,” the coach said. “He’s playing hard on the defensive end and is getting some big rebounds on the glass. The other guys get energized by that.”

Plaisier also has been pleased with the scoring balance of the team. “We are getting balance,” he said. “Josh Harris has had some nice nights and Matt Owens had good games both nights down there. AJ Vos is another guy who is stepping up and scoring a little for us.”

Timothy returned to Metro Suburban Conference Red Division play and downed Ridgewood by 19 points.

“They beat us at our place earlier in the season by three points,” said Plaisier. “The guys came out and played with good energy. Josh had another good scoring night with 22 points and Matt Owens gave us 13 points and 15 rebounds. Danardo had a good game defensively and a bunch

of other guys are chipping in for us.

We had some good minutes off the bench from Chris Brooks and Marquis Johnson defensively.”

The Ridgewood win pushed the Trojans to 4-2 in MSC Red play.

Ridgewood and Wheaton Academy each had 5-1 records through late last week. Timothy holds a win against Wheaton Academy already.

“We needed that Ridgewood game to stay in the running for a possible conference championship,” said Plaisier. “We’ll take them one at a time and see if we can put ourself in a good spot at the end. We know we have to take care of business with some of these games coming up. We kind of control our own destiny.”

The Timothy Christian girls basketball team finds itself in the thick of a conference race.

With a recent win over Fenton, the Trojans moved to 8-2 overall in Metro Suburban Conference Red Division action. Timothy trails Aurora Christian by one game in the loss column with Chicago Christian having two losses as well.

“It’s been a crazy conference,” said Timothy coach Mark Baumbach. “We beat Aurora Christian in conference and Chicago Christian had our number twice. It’s been wild.

But the good thing is you want to be playing for something right now leading into the playoffs.”

During a recent three-game stretch, the Trojans were 38-32 winners over Lisle in non-conference play.

“We came out to a great start,” said Baumbach. “We led 15-2 and Lisle made a nice comeback. It was a gritty effort by us against a team that played hard man-to-man defense.

Hannah (Schuringa) made some nice free throws down the stretch and Lauren Gehrke had a big basket down the stretch. It’s one of the few games where we played a team that played hard man-to-man defense,

“We were very well-balanced,” said Baumbach. “We played great defense as well. That game helped get us prepared for Fenton.”

“That was 16 more than the first time we played them,” Baumbach pointed out. “It was a crazy game. Our transition game was outstanding. Defensively, you hope shots aren’t going in against them. You can defend and get a hand up on someone but it seems they always are getting a shot off and then you have rebounds going all over the place. We did a nice job with our guards and forwards getting rebounds and Greta (Hoogstra) and Hannah (Schuringa) rebounding as well. It was a nice effort. Fenton is such a different team. We decided to play the same strategy and that’s to outscore them. You have to get the rebound and be ready to run and push the floor. Sureya singlehandedly beat their press. We did a great job finishing. It was senior night for us and we were pumped up.”

Timothy was 16-5 overall after the Fenton win.

In the Lisle victory, Schuringa had 15 points and 12 rebounds. Strube had six points and two steals. Alex had six points and Hoogstra had six points and 14 rebounds.

Against Fenton, Schuringa had 24 points and 15 rebounds (11 offensive). Alex had 19 points (2 threes).

Strube had 17 points and Hoogstra had eight points. Carstensen had eight rebounds and four assists. Timothy shot 46 percent from the field and attempted 80 shots in the game.

In a 63-56 win over Gilbert Christian, Timothy trailed 21-16 after one and 32-30 at the half.

Timothy outscored Gilbert 33-24 in the second half.

Owens hit for 21 points and six assists. He drained three 3-pointers. Vos had 10 points, while Jones had eight points and nine rebounds.

Baldridge had seven points and Harris had six rebounds.

Timothy played Aurora Christian earlier this week in a Martin Luther King shootout event at Timothy and will face Elmwood Park this week as well.
