Victim of recent DUI crash dies from injuries

On Nov. 24, 10:30 p.m., Bensenville police officers responded to a personal injury crash at Route 83 and Thorndale Avenue involving a 2003 black Ford Expedition and a 2005 silver Jeep Renegade.

The preliminary investigation indicated that the Ford allegedly driven

by Nestor Navarrete, 25, of Melrose Park, failed to yield for a red light on southbound Route 83 and collided with the Jeep that was driven by Jerold Lasaine, 79, of Hanover Park, that was traveling westbound on Thorndale. Both parties from the crash were transported to Alexian Brothers Medical Center for treatment.

Navarrete was released from the hospital on the night of the crash. He was transported to the Bensenville Police Department where he was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, possession of drug paraphernalia, no insurance, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, disobeying a traffic control device (red light) and driver’s license not on person.

On Dec. 27, the Cook County Examiner’s Office advised that Lasaine had died on that date from the blunt force injuries that he had sustained from the crash. Upgraded charges against Navarrete are pending further investigation in cooperation with the Du Page County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Chairman proposes merger of DuPage Election Commission and County Clerk’s Office Combined functions offer reductions in cost and increased customer service

In collaboration with DuPage County Clerk Paul Hinds and Election Commission Chairwoman Cathy Ficker Terrill, DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin proposed a consolidation of the DuPage Election Commission and the Office of the County Clerk on Tuesday.

The proposed consolidation would merge the functions of the two offices while maintaining and increasing the independent bi-partisan oversight that offers public access to the decisions made regarding election policy.

The proposal, announced during the regular DuPage County Board meeting, describes the new model of governance which increases efficiency, transparency and the accountability of elections in DuPage County.

Chairman Cronin said, “Merging the functions of two County offices that experience a high volume of public inquiries and interactions on a daily basis, allows for a smoother customer experience, eliminates redundancy and increases efficiency.”

The operations would be consolidated into an Election Division in the DuPage County Clerk’s Office.

In addition, Chairman Cronin’s proposal would create a five-member Board of Election Commissioners which would set election policy, hold public meetings and receive

public comment. The County Clerk would serve as Chairman of that Board.

“I believe this proposal fulfills our commitment to increase accountability, consolidate functions where it makes sense, and improve transparency for our residents.

There is no higher priority for us than ensuring an open, efficient and accessible election system in DuPage County,” said Cronin.

DuPage County Clerk Paul Hinds commented, “From a resident perspective, the merged offices will provide ‘one-stop shopping’ for our customers. The goal is to allow them to complete a number of transactions in one trip and to provide answers to as many of their questions as possible.”

DuPage County Election Commission Chairwoman Cathy Ficker Terrill highlighted the importance of the bi-partisan representation featured in the plan. “An integral part of all of our discussions has been the need to retain and enhance both political parties’ representation within the Election Commission. I believe all voters are well-served in DuPage County under this proposal.”

A public hearing on the proposal will be held following the Jan. 10 DuPage County Board meeting at approximately 11 a.m. in the DuPage County Board Room, JTK Administration Building, 421 County Farm Road, Wheaton.

Kathleen Willis, D-Addison, will be meeting with local residents at the Wood Dale Public Library, located at 520 North Wood Dale Road in Wood Dale on Wednesday, January 18 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

“I have been spending much of my time talking to constituents at their doors, on the phone and at public events because some people may have difficulty finding the time to visit our district office in Northlake,” said Willis. “Busy schedules, prior commitments, and transpor-

Moody’s: Illinois’ continued outbound migration a credit negative ILLINOIS NEWS NETWORK With Illinois’ bottom-of-the-barrel credit rating, Moody’s Investors Service says the state’s continued population decline will make it more difficult to pay for government debt — and that could make the state’s credit rating even worse.

The most recent U.S. Census data indicate Illinois lost more than 37,500 people from July 2015 to July 2016.

That marks the third straight year of declines, more than any other state in the country.

Moody’s Vice President and Senior Credit Officer Ted Hampton believes

the continued trend is a bad omen.

“They’re symptoms of factors that may affect the state’s credit over time,” he said. “If the economy continues to be sub-par, that’s going to make it more difficult for the state to raise revenue, to balance its budget, to provide for its pension funding.”

Illinois owes more than $10 billion in unpaid bills and nearly $130 billion in unfunded pension liability. The state hasn’t had a truly balanced budget in more than a decade.According to Hampton, states like Arizona outside of the region do draw Illinoisans away, but a lot of the migration data show

people moving just across state lines.

“If the neighboring state has more employment opportunities than your state, then that is clearly one reason people might want to make that kind of move,” he said.

Hampton noted that both Indiana and Michigan saw faster job growth over the period when Illinois lost over 37,500 people.

Gov. Bruce Rauner and Republicans have been pushing for reforms to the state’s business climate to spur on more job growth, without much help from the Democratic majority in the legislature.

The scheduled two-day session could open with a deal being revealed to possibly solve the state’s 18-month-long budget impasse.

the income tax and a tax on sugary drinks.

Rauner said Friday he’s been briefed on the summary by leading Republican state Sen. Christine Radogno, R-Lemont.

“I’m not familiar with all the detail. I think it’s still being worked out. I think some legislation is still being drafted. But I’m heartened by that,” Rauner said. “I’m optimistic that Democrats and Republicans are negotiating in good faith to come up with changes to our system so it’s not

broken anymore.”

Several lawmakers in the House confirmed rumblings about the deal.

Leading Republican state Rep. Jim Durkin, R-Western Springs, said there’s a lot of speculation of what leading Senators will produce. “They may be poised to present and vote on a budget possibly Monday or Tuesday, but that is all the whispers that are going on the chambers right now because it’s very tight lipped.”

Messages seeking comment from Senate leaders were not successful.

Crime news around the county

22 years for man found guilty of burglary from Wheaton apartment complex DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced that on Wed., Jan. 4, a Melrose Park man was sentenced to 22 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for stealing a universal remote control from a Wheaton apartment complex common area. A jury found Eric Bramwell, 35, guilty of Burglary following a two-day long trial. The trial was held in front of Judge Robert Miller, who handed down the sentence. Because of sentencing guidelines in relation to the defendant’s past criminal history, Bramwell was eligible for Class X sentencing, or up to 30 years behind bars.

On August 1, 2015, Bramwell entered the common area of the Wheaton apartment complex located at 121 Cross Street. Once inside, Bramwell stole the remote control to the television set in the common area and then fled the scene. While at the complex however, Bramwell dropped a glove which was later recovered by Wheaton police officers. Authorities were led to Bramwell when a DNA match

was made from DNA collected from the glove to the State’s convicted felon DNA database. He was taken into custody on October 2, 2015 and has remained in custody at the DuPage County Jail since that time. At sentencing, prosecutors offered evidence that beginning in 2014, through his arrest, Bramwell had committed similar burglaries at other apartment complexes including stealing televisions off the wall. Those complexes are located in Wheaton, Lisle, Aurora, Bloomingdale, Downers Grove and Oakbrook Terrace.

Bramwell will be required to serve 50% of his sentence before being eligible for parole.

Man charged for alleged robbery in grocery store lot Berlin also announced that bond has been set for a Bellwood man alleging he stole a woman’s purse outside the Jewel grocery store located in Clarendon Hills. Enkhbold Naidandavaa, 20 (d.o.b. 6/14/1996) of 3604 St. Paul Avenue, appeared in bond court this morning where Judge Richard Russo set bond at in the amount of $100,000 with 10%

to apply. Naidandavaa has been charged with one count of Aggravated Robbery, a Class 1 Felony and one count of Aggravated Battery, a Class 3 Felony.

It is alleged that on January 5, 2017, at approximately 8:30 p.m., Naidandavaa, wearing a ski mask and dark clothing, approached his victim from behind while she was loading groceries into her vehicle. It is further alleged that as he snatched the woman’s purse from her, he pulled a gun on the woman and then pushed her to the ground. The gun was later determined to be an air-soft pistol. After stealing the woman’s purse, Naidandavaa fled the scene.

He was apprehended by officers with the Willowbrook Police Department four blocks from the store approximately ten minutes later and taken into custody without incident.

Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt. The defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the government’s burden to prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Reader recalls watching football with Mom

As I watched the Alabama-Washington football game Saturday on TV, I realized, and not for the first time, what a lucky guy I have been to have married a wife who really enjoyed watching the same sports as I did, namely college and NFL football and college basketball. During Michael Jordan’s glory years we were also HUGE Bulls fans and built our social calendar around the Bulls’ schedule. But after Michael retired, we quickly lost interest in the Bulls, and we haven’t watched any of their games for many years.

However, until Mom’s memory began to fail, we continued to spend a good part of our weekends watching college football and basketball, and particularly the Wisconsin Badger games. We also enjoyed watching the NFL games, and particularly the Bears and Packers. So why did I enjoy so much having Mom as a fellow spectator? It gave me someone

to talk to who was reasonably knowledgeable about the sports we were watching. I talk out loud a lot during every game, generally questioning the officiating, the play calling or other decisions the teams make. And I still do, but now there is no one to share or challenge my comments. I end up talking to myself, unlike the good old days when Mom and I often had heated discussion on my comments.

Yes, Mom was a big sports fan and often had strong opinions about strategy that sometimes differed from mine. She was not just one of those wives who faked her interest in sports in order to appease her husband.

Up until the last few years she really did enjoy watching football and basketball on TV, almost as much as I did. If I am wrong, she was a better actress than any of those who ever won an Oscar. As I said, I was one very lucky guy! And this is only one of the many reasons!

Symphony Orchestra presents ‘1-2-3-4 Baroque’ on Jan. 22 In a musical feast for lovers of the Baroque, the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra presents “1-2-3-4 Baroque” at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 22 at Elmhurst Christian Reformed Church.

You will be taken on an adventure through the genre of the Baroque

concerto in this program featuring concertos for one, two, three and even four soloists.

The program opens with Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach’s Sinfonia No. 3 in A major, followed by J. S. Bach’s Concerto for Harpsichord in A major and Vivaldi’s Concerto for

Two Cellos in G minor. Concluding the program are J. S. Bach’s Concerto for Flute, Violin and Harpsichord and Vivaldi’s Concerto for Four Violins.

Elmhurst Symphony Music Director, Conductor and harpsichordist Stephen Alltop leads a group of stel-

lar musicians—flutist Jodi Taylor, violinists Rika Seko, Kate Carter, Kristen Wiersum, David Petersons, and William Greenlea, and cellists Jean Hatmaker and Ruth Mudge—in what promises to be a thrilling Baroque experience.

Sponsors of concert soloists are John and Mary Mallon, Darlene Van Meir, and an anonymous donor. Music costs are underwritten by a generous gift from Richard and Jane Kiep.

Proceeds from a bake sale at the concert will benefit the Symphony’s Youth Outreach Program, which sponsors annual performances by Elmhurst Symphony musicians at area elementary and middle schools.

The Elmhurst Symphony performs at Elmhurst Christian Reformed Church, located at 149 W. Brush Hill Road.

The church has accessible parking and facilities; parking is free. The concert experience at ECRC is enhanced by the informative and lively discussion, Behind the Music Stand,

led by audience favorite Dr. Ted Hatmaker, which takes place at 1:45 p.m. prior to the concert.

Concert tickets are $32 for adults, $30 for seniors, and $9 for students.

Willowbrook’s Jessen wins prestigious Dvorak wrestling title Warriors girls basketball team scores two victories

Willowbrook junior wrestling standout Jack Jessen picked up a major title over the holidays.

Jessen won the 182-pound weight class at the prestigious Dvorak invitational tournament, regarded as one of the top tournaments in the state during the high-school season.

Jessen, who remained undefeated through late last week, pinned Wisconsin state-champion Billy Pitzner

in the 182-pound final.

Jessen recorded three pins and one technical fall victory in the tournament. He won the title with a pinfall win in 3:53.

Through late last week, Jessen was ranked No. 2 in the state in Class 3A

by Illinois Matmen. He has tournament titles this year at Hoffman Estates and Dvorak. Jessen finished third in the state at 182 pounds as a sophomore and second at 170 pounds as a freshman.

Addison Trail boys basketball team competes in Centralia tournament

By Mike Miazga, CORRESPONDENT The Addison Trail boys basketball team had mixed results at the recent Centralia holiday tournament.

The Blazers went 1-2 in games against Alton, Mt. Vernon and Jacksonville. “We played OK,” said Addison Trail coach Brendan Lyons.

Addison Trail dropped a 62-49 decision to Alton in the first game and then scored a 62-47 victory over Mt. Vernon before losing 61-51 to Jacksonville.

“The two games we lost were similar to each other,” said Lyons.

“We didn’t come out and have a good start. The name of the game was turnovers. We had 20-plus turnovers in each game we lost. If you look at the Jacksonville game, they scored 31 points off our turnovers. Taking care of the basketball was the deciding factor. We did some nice things on offense and defense, but we couldn’t recover. We were chasing points and started doing things we don’t usually do. That can only last so long.

Turnovers were the big thing.”

Lyons saw progress in the Mt. Vernon triumph. “That was a nice win,” he said. “We have been stressing more and more the team basketball aspect and making the passes and controlling the tempo. We did that against Mt. Vernon. Guys were sharing the basketball. We were getting points from a variety of people. That was a key to our success offensively.

We shared the ball and got to the offensive glass. You have to remember those three things, taking care of the basketball, sharing the ball and getting to the offensive glass.”

Jack Kalbas had a strong tournament for the Blazers. “Jack has been shooting it better of late, which is good for us. He’s found a good rhythm,” said Lyons. “He gives us a good outside presence.”

Michael Williams and Colton Noel were key contributors as well.

“Michael had some nice scoring games,” said Lyons. “He can score for us in a variety of ways. He’s shooting it better. His bread and butter is getting to the basket and getting some put-backs. Colton is a consistent presence for us down low. He had a nice tournament as well.”

Addison Trail also benefitted from the debut of Breydon Hargrove, who recently became eligible to play, Lyons noted. “He was a spark plug for us and played a couple nice games,” said Lyons. “He was in double-digit scoring in the two games he played. He gives us a lot of energy.”

Addison Trail also scored a 77-74 non-conference win over Mundelein Carmel recently. Hargrove led the Blazers with 21 points.

In addition to Hargrove’s output, Noel had 19 points, while Williams scored 15 and Kalbas had 11 in the Carmel contest.

“Anytime you have balanced scoring like that it usually bodes well for you,” said Lyons. “That was a nice game coming out of Christmas. We got the win and hopefully we can get the ball rolling in the right direction with some consistency.”

After the Carmel game, the Blazers were 7-5 overall and had an 0-3 record through their first three West Suburban Conference Gold Division games.

“Neither side in the Carmel game played much defense, but it was a nice game for us offensively,” said Lyons. “We had been stuck in the 40s and low 50s for points.”

Willowbrook freshman boys basketball The Willowbrook freshman A boys basketball team won the Downers Grove North tournament to improve to 11-0 on the season.

The Warriors defeated Waubonsie Valley 44-38 to advance to the championship where they downed DeKalb.

Trent at Nebraska-Kearney Willowbrook graduate Yashua Trent is now a member of the University of Nebraska-Kearney men’s basketball team.

Trent has helped the Lopers get out to an 11-4 start on the season (4-2 in conference).

Through 15 games, Trent was second on the team in scoring at 14.3 points per game. He was averaging 29.5 minutes of playing time (11 starts) and was shooting an impressive .627 from the field (74-for-118), .538 from the 3-point line (7-for-13) and .674 from the free-throw line

(60-for-89). He also was averaging 3.8 rebounds per game and had a team-high 67 assists against only 43 turnovers to go with a team-best 26 steals.

Trent has led the team in scoring three times this season. He had 26 points in a win against Southern Arkansas and also scored 15 points in a victory over Henderson State. Trent had 19 points in a loss to Colorado Mines. In a recent game against Central Missouri, Trent had 11 points, two rebounds and three assists to go with two steals.

Against Southwest Baptist, Trent had eight points, four rebounds, six assists and two steals.

Girls basketball team splits pair of games over holidays

The Addison Trail girls’ basketball team split its four games over the holidays at the Lisle tournament.

The Blazers recorded a 37-32 victory over host Lisle where Diamond Pikulyk had 12 points.

“Diamond played really well against Lisle,” said Addison Trail coach Rob Schader Addison Trail lost 63-47 to an Elgin St. Edward team that ended up playing the championship game of the tournament.

The Blazers also defeated Aurora Christian 58-52 in overtime and lost to Chicago Christian 33-28.

The 2-2 showing left Addison Trail at 8-7 overall through its first 15 games.

In the Aurora Christian game, the Blazers found themselves down by

two points at halftime.

“We played really well in the third quarter,” said Schader. “We were up by seven or eight in the fourth quarter and then they hit a couple of 3s and we kind of fell apart. We shot 40 percent from the free-throw line.

We missed some 1-and-1s. The good thing is we played well in the overtime.”

Schader said the team had a tough outing against Chicago Christian.

“We couldn’t score,” he said. “It was 10-9 at halftime. They stayed in a zone and we were in zone. We missed a ton of layups. It was one of those games where you couldn’t hit anything. We didn’t play that well.

We won two games at that tournament but it wasn’t one of our finer moments.”

Schader noted the team was resting up after the tournament in prepa-

ration for the second half of the season. “We needed the time off. We were tired and needed to rest up,” he said. “We’re looking forward to getting back into the swing of things.”

Looking at the first half of the season, the coach, overall, was pleased.

“We are above .500, which is great,” he said late last week. “We won some games and there were probably three games out there that we could have won, but we didn’t take care of it.

Overall, we’re doing pretty well.”

In addition to Pikulyk, Schader also cited strong recent play from Alyssa Pham and Jasmin Mehmeti.

“The three of them have been solid all year,” he said.

Addison Trail’s sophomore team won the Lisle sophomore tournament and had won eight games in a row through late last week.

“That’s huge for us,” said Schader.

Fenton girls basketball team third at Northside Prep

Fenton girls basketball coach Tim Anderson liked what he saw over the holidays.

The Bison took third at the Northside Prep tournament, going 2-2.

“We played four really good games,” said Anderson. “It’s what I’ve been waiting for.”

Fenton opened the tournament with a 53-22 win over Chicago Kelly.

“We played very well,” said Anderson. “It was our first win of the year and it came at a great time. It was a great team effort.”

Fenton then lost 41-33 to DePaul Academy. “DePaul Academy used to be Gordon Tech and is very good.

They ended up winning the tournament,” Anderson noted. “They pulled away in the last minute-and-a-half of the game. It was a three- or four-point game until then. They made a couple 3-point plays. We had a great effort against a very good team. We’ve been

waiting for this sort of thing to happen. We got a sense of, ‘Hey, wow!

We can be very competitive.’”

The Bison also lost 44-41 to Northside Prep. “They had a terrific player,” said Anderson. “We had a chance with three seconds left to tie, but a 3-pointer rimmed out. It was a very good effort on our part.”

Fenton wrapped up the tournament with a 49-32 win over Chicago Perspectives/IIT Joslin.

“It was another great effort from our kids,” said Anderson. “I’ve always believed in this: that players and teams take quantum leaps and you can see when they do. We’ve had five games now starting back with IC Catholic Prep where we aren’t the same team we were before we played IC. We lost by a ton of points to Riverside-Brookfield on Dec. 15. We’re not the same team now. Everybody looks different out there. It’s a great feeling. I’m really excited about this.

There’s that old saying with accomplishment comes confidence and

with confidence comes belief. They see what they are doing and they are building off it.”

Anderson said he also saw progress on the defensive end, even in the loss to tournament-champion DePaul. “DePaul, my gosh, had three girls over 6-feet,” he said. “We don’t have anybody taller than 5-9, but we put a defensive plan in place that had them confused. For us everything is clicking and it’s really been a team effort on defense. They are doing a good job and hopefully we can keep it going.”

Fenton’s Amari Benbow and Ashley Lira were named to the all-tournament team. “And deservedly so,” said Anderson of Benbow and Lira’s awards. “Amari is kind of the catalyst of all this. She’s leading us in scoring and rebounding and doing a great job.”

Anderson is excited about the second half of the season.

“I’m anxious to see what we can do,” he said.
