A 31-year-old truck driver who lived in Villa Park was arrested Thursday, Aug. 31, at his home in Villa Park on federal terrorism charges filed in New York. The man is accused of being part of a U.S. network that raised money for would-be terrorists to travel to Syria to join Islamic State militants and another designated terrorist group, the al-Nusrah Front.

Dilshod Khusanov, who is married and originally from Uzbekistan, made an initial appearance in U.S. District Court in Chicago hours after his 6 a.m. arrest at his Villa Park home. He stood before the judge in a red-checkered shirt with his ankles shackled above red tennis shoes.

Several relatives looked on from courtroom benches.

When the U.S. Magistrate Judge M. David Weisman asked if he understood the process by which he would likely be sent to Brooklyn, New York, to answer the charges, Khusanov responded: “I don’t understand what this means. ... Can you explain in more detail?” The judge then did explain further.

In a two-count indictment unsealed Thursday in U.S. District Court in Brooklyn, Khusanov is charged with one count of conspiracy to provide material support to foreign terrorists and one count of attempting to provide material support to foreign terrorists. Each count carries a maximum 15-year prison term.

Court papers supporting his detention argue Khusanov poses a danger to the community and is a risk to flee the United States, because he is a citizen of Uzbekistan and still has family in the Central Asian nation. Judge Weisman scheduled another hearing in Chicago for Sept. 7.

Filings link Khusanov to four others indicted in New York previously for being part of the same network, as well to two others who aspired to go to Syria. One, Abdurasul Juraboev, pleaded guilty in 2015. He allegedly threatened attacks in the U.S., mentioning killing the president or possibly setting off a bomb at Coney Island.

Khusanov did not enter a plea Thursday and his federal defender, Jushua Kutnick, asked for more time to discuss the case with his client.

The attorney declined to comment to reporters following the hearing.

Ronald McDonald House charities help ease medical transfers for young patients

When a child is hospitalized it’s stressful for the whole family. Complex cases that require a transfer to a second hospital can add more stress, especially if the parents plan to stay at the hospital overnight.

Edward-Elmhurst Health is easing the transition for families whose child is being transferred from Elmhurst Hospital’s Emergency Department or Pediatrics Department to a higher level of pediatric care at Edward Hospital in Naperville, including its Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chicagoland & Northern Indiana (RMHC-CNI) is supporting this effort by providing “welcome bags” for young patients and their families.

The process begins with a conversation between the nursing staff and family at Elmhurst Hospital.

“When a transfer is necessary it usually means something unexpected has happened, so the families are anxious about what’s next. We tell them about Edward, and that we are all part of the same organization,” said Lucette Gregory, RN, clinical coordinator of the Pediatric Inpatient unit at Elmhurst.

The inception of the welcome bags Welcome bags were started with

an idea from Diane Long, RN, director of Children’s Services at Edward, who requested input from Brittany Rhyne, manager of the Ronald McDonald Family Room at Edward, on what else could be done to reduce stress for these families.

Rhyne looked into RMHC-CNI donating welcome bags, and Lisa Mitchell, vice president of Programs and Services for RMHC-CNI, approved the idea as an ongoing program.

The first set of welcome bags were delivered to Elmhurst Hospital on Aug. 11. Now, each child being transferred receives a bag before he or she leaves the hospital.

Each large canvas tote is filled with items to comfort the young patient, including a fuzzy blanket, stuffed animal, crayons and coloring book, toiletries, notecards and a pen for the parents.

The bags and their contents had all been donated from people across the country, and packed by local RMHC-CNI volunteers and staff. Some items are created by local groups, such as the fleece blankets, made by Girl Scouts.

People at Hamburger University in Oak Brook who are in leadership training classes included a personally written notes of encouragement to the recipient family.

Forest Preserve District kicks off ‘Take 5 Photo Contest’ Visitors invited to share photos for chance to win prizes

The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County is kicking off its second annual “Take 5 Photo Contest” on Friday, Sept. 1, giving visitors a chance to win great outdoor prizes when they show how they “Take 5” in DuPage County forest preserves.

Through Oct. 27, participants can submit up to 10 photos of plants, animals, landscapes, people, structures and sculptures, or weather. Photos must be taken in DuPage County forest preserves but can be from any time of the year. Complete contest rules, instructions on how to submit photos and help pick the “Juried Voter’s Choice” winner, and a gallery of photo submissions are online at dupageforest.org/take5.

Last year’s contest resulted in more than 4,000 photo entries and 7,000 online votes.

The contest is part of the District’s

larger “Take 5” campaign, which promotes spending time in DuPage County’s forest preserves for a “healthier body, sharper mind and happier you.” Most visitors know the forest preserves offer great ways to exercise, but many may not realize that just five minutes in nature can improve mood and reduce stress and that an hour can boost memory by 20 percent.

Prizes include two bikes with helmets for the winners of the “People” and “Places” categories. Other prizes include a camping package with a tent, two-person sleeping bag and LED lantern for the winner of the “Plants” category and a snowshoeing package with a pair of snowshoes, poles and a backpack for the winner of the “Animals” category.

The winner of the contest’s “Juried Voters’ Choice” competition will win a fishing rod and reel with assorted gear.

The contest will also have random drawings for a pair of running shoes, a private horse-drawn hayride at Kline Creek Farm, a picnicking package, and a round of golf for two with a cart at the Maple Meadows Golf Course in Wood Dale.

Montini recognizes 26 AP scholars Montini Catholic High School is recognizing 26 outstanding students honored as AP Scholars, AP Scholars with Honor, and AP Scholar with Distinction. One senior also achieved National AP Scholar recognition.

Scores were announced by The Advanced Placement Program over the summer. Montini Catholic students achieved an average score of 3.35.

“A total of eighty-seven (87) of our students completed 155 Advanced Placement Examinations,” said President Jim Segredo. “Thirty-three perfect scores of 5 were reached!”

One Montini Catholic student from the class of 2017, Jin Liu earned the prestigious achievement of National AP Scholar. The honor is granted to students in the U.S. who receive an average score of at least 4 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 4 or higher on 8 or more of these exams.

District 88, Addison Trail hold Sister Cities golf event On Aug. 23, District 88 and Addison Trail staff members participated in the Village of Addison Sister Cities Golf Adventure at Links & Tees Golf Facility in Addison.

The golf outing was a fundraiser for the village’s Sister Cities program with Triggiano, Italy. Through that student-exchange program, Addison hosts students from Triggiano, and AT students travel to Italy.

The Village of Addison Sister Cities Committee continues to raise funds on behalf of AT students to provide scholarships for them to go to Italy.

The members of the winning golf team were Career and Technical Education (CTE) Department Chair Juliann Boudouris and CTE teacher Mike Maaske. As the winners, they received the Village of Addison Sister Cities Mayor’s Trophy.

Aug. 28 Krystine M. Caputo, 20, of Glendale Heights, was charged with failure to give aid or information, no valid driver’s license and making an improper turn in the 600 block of W. Army Trail Road at around 8:23 p.m.

Aug. 27 Carlos D. Mejias, 28, of Addison, was charged with DUI, driving on the wrong side of the street, improper passing, no valid driver’s license and no insurance near Lake and Lincoln at around 2:06 a.m. Police said officers witnessed Mejias make several traffic violations prior to driving off the roadway and striking a cement parking pylon.

Aug. 25 Police said Peter Spear, 25, of Itasca, had an original warrant out of the Addison Police Department for DUI, unlawful possession of a controlled substance and traffic violations.

Villa Park Aug. 26 • Luis R. Chagoya-Ibarra, 26, of Villa Park, was charged with two counts of aggravated DUI, unlawful transportation of liquor, driving while license revoked, improper lane usage and failure to use a turn signal near North and Michigan at around 1:04 a.m.

• Brian M. Fernandez, 37, of Chicago, was charged with retail theft at a store at around 2:38 p.m.

• Ricky D. Richeson, 36, of Bellwood, was charged with criminal trespass to real property in the 300 block of S. Oakland at around 3:30 a.m.

• Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 300 block of E. North Ave. at around 5:26 p.m. Police said an unknown suspect entered a vehicle that was left unsecured and unattended and stole a brief case from the vehicle.

Aug. 25 • Andre B. Gonzalez, 34, of Villa Park, was charged with disorderly conduct and battery at Westland Park at around 6:21 p.m.

• Criminal damage to a vehicle was reported in the 400 block of N. Douglas. Police said that between 1 and 7 a.m., an unknown suspect shattered the passenger side window on a vehicle that was parked in the driveway.

The glove box was open and contents were taken and thrown along the parkway of the residence.

July 15-Aug. 25 Criminal damage was reported in the 600 block of N. Third. Police said that between the above dates, an unknown suspect damaged the door jamb and several windows of a residential property.

Aug. 24 • Kevin M. Wagner, 21, of Lombard, was charged with disorderly conduct near St. Charles and Ardmore at around 5:13 p.m.

• A female juvenile from Franklin Park was charged with retail theft at a store at around 3:14 p.m.

• Retail theft was reported in the 100 block of W. Roosevelt at around 2:20 p.m. Police said an unknown female suspect removed items from the

display shelf and left the store with the items without paying for them.

• Criminal damage was reported in the 400 block of W. St. Charles at around 10:15 p.m. Police said an unknown suspect punched and broke a window on the south side of the building.

• Battery was reported in the 200 block of Kenilworth at around 5:45 a.m. Police said an unknown suspect battered a resident when she was getting into her vehicle.

Aug. 23 Armed robbery was reported in the 1-100 block of S. Villa at around 10:46 p.m. Police said an unknown male suspect entered a store displaying a weapon, forced the clerk to open the register and hand cash to the suspect. The suspect ordered a clerk and patron to the rear of the store and fled on foot.

Aug. 22-23 Burglary was reported in the 400 block of S. Yale. Police said that between 5 p.m. Aug. 22 and 8:30 a.m.

Aug. 23, an unknown suspect entered an unsecured vehicle parked in the driveway and removed tools and items for HVAC. Aug. 21-Aug. 23 Theft was reported in the 200 block of W. North. Police said that between 3 p.m. Aug. 21 and 8 a.m. Aug. 23, an unknown suspect stole two ladders that were left by the dumpsters.

Aug. 21 • Robert C. Brock, 33, of Lombard, was charged with two counts of DUI, disobeying a traffic control device and failure to signal when required near Jackson and Yale at around 10:36 p.m.

County warns residents: be aware of West Nile virus

The DuPage County Health Department is urging residents to protect against mosquito bites that could lead to West Nile virus (WNV) infection.

“The health department reminds you to “Fight the Bite” and protect yourself and your family from West Nile virus, an illness spread by mosquitoes,” said Karen Ayala, Health Department Executive Director.

There have been three reported human cases of WNV in DuPage County this year and the Health Department is asking residents to stay active but to protect against mosquitoes, especially when traveling.

The Health Department recommends following the 4 Ds of Defense: • Drain standing water around your home and yard; • Defend by using insect repellent containing DEET when outdoors; • Dress with long sleeves, long pants and closed-toe shoes when outside; and, • wear repellant from Dusk to Dawn, when mosquitoes are most active.

The Health Department’s Personal Protection Index (PPI) is at Level 3 (high risk) because of the number of mosquito batches testing positive for WNV. Level 3 indicates high numbers of infected mosquitoes in most areas, and multiple human cases of WNV disease in DuPage County. View the PPI at dupagehealth.org.

The PPI provides a real-time snapshot of WNV activity, which ranges from Level 0 (zero) meaning no risk, to Level 3 announcing a high level of risk with multiple human cases of WNV. The PPI is updated every Wednesday at 3 p.m. throughout the WNV season.

The Health Department monitors WNV activity by collecting and testing mosquitoes from traps located throughout the county from May through Oct., the West Nile virus season.

It looked so easy on Pinterest – as most Pinterest projects do. The title was ingenious: “Thirty-seven quick and easy ways to dress up your bathroom mirror.” The only hard part was picking just one. I was hooked – line and sinker.

Suddenly my bathroom mirror was lacking. It looked naked. Definitely in need of a frame.

I picked a fairly simple concept consisting of four wooden planks to flank the edges of the glass. When it comes to home projects, I excel at planning. My husband helps with execution. It was time to reel him in.

He proved a fairly simple catch.

He likes projects, especially when they involve wood and power tools – not necessarily in that order.

Before beginning, we stood in the bathroom, gazing at the mirror. There was a metal trim piece running along the bottom of the glass, which helped affix the mirror to the wall, so we had to leave it in place. The trim protruded outward, providing a bump for our project to work around – literally.

We were stumped by the bump. I suggested routering a groove in the backside of the wood, but my husband rejected that idea in favor of shims, which are thin wooden pieces used to bridge the gap between the wood and the wall and keep the boards from leaning kittywampus.

Now it was time to get to work.

I watched as my husband cut the wood. He watched as I spray painted it. Together we waited for the paint to dry.

The beautiful Pinterest frame attached to the mirror using adhesive-backed Velcro. We stuck the rough side of our Velcro to the mirror and the soft side to the wood. Easy, peasy.

When we attached the first plank to the mirror and stood back to admire our work we saw the problem immediately. The strips of Velcro were clearly visible, creating an appearance nothing short of tacky.

My husband looked at me. I looked at him. Piece by piece we began removing the extremely powerful adhesive-backed Velcro from the wood and mirror.

After much pulling and prodding of the sticky stuff, we were adhesive-free. While peeling Velcro, my husband had devised a plan for screwing the frame into place. That came next and went without a hitch.

Except for the screws, which were even more visible than the Velcro had been. We put putty in the screw indentations to create an even surface. Then we needed to paint to disguise the putty.

(outside) before we assembled the planks into the frame (inside). I didn’t think spray painting in our bathroom was a good idea. For once my husband agreed with me.

The frame was a matte black. How complicated could matching it be?

In a word: extremely, tremendously, incredibly and considerably. The flat black craft paint we used to cover the screws was flatter than the matte black spray paint already on the boards, making the screws as obvious unwanted Velcro.

We had no choice. We had to use the spray paint.

But don’t go there just yet. I’m not foolish enough to use spray paint in the bathroom. I came up with a solution more creative (and foolish) than that.

I went outside with the paint and a small plastic disposable cup. I directed the nozzle into the cup and sprayed like an angry skunk. I kept at it until I had a small amount of black paint accumulated in the bottom of the cup. Then I went inside and brushed it on over the screws. One, by one – eight in all; the paint covered nicely.

I was putting the final touches on the eighth screw when the spray paint ate through the plastic and the bottom of the cup fell off onto the white counter, dispersing black paint onto both it and the sink.

I grabbed a nearby towel and tried to contain the flowing black liquid.

My husband ran to get rags. The paint on the surfaces dried instantaneously.

We tried countertop cleaner, rubbing alcohol and nail polish remover but still the black remained. Finally, I grabbed a white eraser sponge and you know what? Those things really are magic. The black disappeared and our project was complete.

Almost. Next weekend we’re going to tackle the mirror in the other bathroom. It’s going to be Pinterest perfect.

Tom Cullerton fights veterans’ suicides with series of new laws State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) is tackling another obstacle found during the Veterans Suicide Taskforce hearings.

Cullerton’s measure, Senate Bill 1693, to allow deceased veterans with military service to include their veteran status, branch of military and the period of time served in the military on their death certificate, was signed into law last week.

The idea was suggested by DuPage County Coroner Richard Jorgenson, who indicated that veteran suicide

has been under-reported since Illinois death certificates do not include information on the history of U.S. military service.

Senate Bill 1693 is the second measure signed into law that originated from Cullerton’s Veterans Suicide Taskforce hearings. The Illinois Veterans Suicide Task Force was formed by a measure Cullerton led in 2014. As co-chairman Cullerton held six hearings throughout the state to investigate the causes of veteran suicide and released a report to the Gen-

eral Assembly in December of 2016.

The Federal Department of Veterans Affairs and Army state that 10% to 18% of returning veterans are likely to have Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after they return.

Some studies suggest that suicide risk is higher among those who experienced trauma due to the symptoms of PTSD. Senate Bill 1693 passed the Senate and House with bipartisan support.

This new law goes into effect on January 1, 2018.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced on Monday, Aug. 28, that Judge Joseph Bugos has set bond at $75,000 with 10% to apply for an Elmhurst lawyer charged with possession of child pornography. Ralph Tellefsen, 62 (d.o.b.

10/4/1954) of 172 Berkley, appeared in Bond Court Monday morning where he was charged with seven counts of Possession of Child Pornography, a Class 2 Felony.

On Sunday, August 27, an employee at Tellefsen’s Ralph Tellefsen law firm, reported to police that she had allegedly found images depicting child pornography on the printer at the office.

Upon their arrival at the office, officers allegedly found a banker’s box containing thousands of images of child pornography. The defendant was present at that time and was taken into custody.

“The sheer number of child pornography images allegedly possessed by Mr. Tellefsen is nauseating,” Berlin said. “Each one of these disgusting photographs represents yet another innocent victim of child pornography. The filing of today’s charges against Mr. Tellefsen sends the message that my office will move swiftly and vigorously to prosecute any allegations of child pornography. I would like to thank the Elmhurst Police Department for their ongoing efforts in protecting our children from child pornographers.”

Tellefsen’s next court appearance is scheduled for Monday, September 18 in front of Judge John Kinsella. Additional conditions for Tellefsen should he be able to post bond include no contact with children under 18 years of age and no computer or Internet access.

Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt. A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the government’s burden to prove his or her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Bond set at $75,000 for Elmhurst lawyer accused of possessing child pornography

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced last week that former Wheaton College Professor Donald Ratcliff, 66, formerly of Warrenville, has been Donald Ratcliff sentenced to three years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for violating his conditions of sex offender probation by downloading a movie featuring images of naked children. On February 25, 2014, Ratcliff was sentenced to 48 months sex offender probation for possessing child pornography, a Class 2 Felony.

On May 18, the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office filed a petition to Revoke Ratcliff’s Probation.

In the petition, the State alleged that on April 23, 2017, Ratcliff had accessed a website containing sexually stimulating images of minors in violation of conditions of his probation.

On June 8, 2017 Ratcliff was found guilty of violating conditions of his parole.

“As one of the conditions of his probation, Mr. Ratcliff was ordered by the Court not to possess or view any material deemed sexually stimulating,” Berlin said. “Simply put, he could not help himself and soon found himself viewing the same type of repulsive images that had already earned him forty-eight months of probation.”

Ratcliff will be required to serve 50% of his sentence before being eligible for parole.

Hinsdale man sentenced to 70 years for 2014 Bloomingdale murder

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin announced recently that Jeffrey Keller, 54, formerly of Hinsdale, has been sentenced to 70 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for the 2014 shooting death of then 37-year-old Nathan Fox of Bloomingdale. On May 26, 2017, a jury found Keller guilty following a six-day-long trial in front of Judge George Bakalis.

On January 16, 2015, Keller appeared in Bond Court and was denied bond.

He has remained in custody since that time.

On December 22, 2014, at approximately 9:34 p.m., officers with the Bloomingdale Police Department responded to a call of a person shot at 237 Tamarack Lane, Fox’s residence he shared with his girlfriend. Upon their arrival, officers found Fox in his vehicle parked in his garage suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, one to his right wrist and one to his left shoulder in which the bullet had traveled through his body. Fox was immediately transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

An investigation into the murder led by the Bloomingdale Police Department revealed that at some time prior to the shooting, Keller went to Fox’s home, unscrewed an outside light bulb and waited outside for him to return. When Fox returned to his home, Keller approached Fox after he pulled into the garage and shot him

just as he opened the door to exit his vehicle. After murdering Fox, Keller then fled the scene.

“In Jeffrey Keller’s mind, Nate Fox was a threat that had to be eliminated,” Berlin said. “So, three days before Christmas 2014, Jeffrey Keller’s evil plot of eliminating Nate Fox, a man he had never met yet considered a romantic rival, came to fruition.

“In an act of extreme cowardice, Keller went to Nate’s home, and waited in the shadows for Nate to return.

When Nate arrived home, Keller ambushed him before he could even get out of his car, shooting him two times, and fled. Following the murder, Mr. Keller attempted to cover his tracks, but thanks to the outstanding police work by the Bloomingdale Police Department, he was taken into custody approximately three weeks later. Keller’s defense for the murder was that Nate Fox was accidentally killed in a struggle. The jury however, rejected Mr. Keller’s absurd attempt to avoid responsibility for the cold-blooded murder of Nate Fox. …It is my sincerest hope Nate Fox’s family and friends will now be able to gain some measure of closure with the knowledge that the man who killed Nate Fox will spend the rest of his life behind bars.”

Keller will be required to serve 100% of his sentence before being eligible for parole.

Forest Preserve District kicks off ‘Take 5 Photo Contest’ Visitors invited to share photos for chance to win prizes

The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County is kicking off its second annual “Take 5 Photo Contest” on Friday, Sept. 1, giving visitors a chance to win great outdoor prizes when they show how they “Take 5” in DuPage County forest preserves.

Through Oct. 27, participants can submit up to 10 photos of plants, animals, landscapes, people, structures and sculptures, or weather. Photos must be taken in DuPage County forest preserves but can be from any time of the year. Complete contest rules, instructions on how to submit photos and help pick the “Juried Voter’s Choice” winner, and a gallery of photo submissions are online at dup-

ageforest.org/take5.

Last year’s contest resulted in more than 4,000 photo entries and 7,000 online votes.

The contest is part of the District’s larger “Take 5” campaign, which promotes spending time in DuPage County’s forest preserves for a “healthier body, sharper mind and happier you.” Most visitors know the forest preserves offer great ways to exercise, but many may not realize that just five minutes in nature can improve mood and reduce stress and that an hour can boost memory by 20 percent.

Prizes include two bikes with helmets for the winners of the “People”

and “Places” categories. Other prizes include a camping package with a tent, two-person sleeping bag and LED lantern for the winner of the “Plants” category and a snowshoeing package with a pair of snowshoes,

poles and a backpack for the winner of the “Animals” category.

The winner of the contest’s “Juried Voters’ Choice” competition will win a fishing rod and reel with assorted gear. The contest will also have ran-

dom drawings for a pair of running shoes, a private horse-drawn hayride at Kline Creek Farm, a picnicking package, and a round of golf for two with a cart at the Maple Meadows Golf Course in Wood Dale.

DuPageCounty makes safety improvement at County Farm-Army Trail intersection

DuPage Department of Transportation engineers joined County Board Vice Chairman and District 6 Board member Jim Zay at the corner of Army Trail and County Farm roads to discuss recent signal changes to enhance safety at the intersection.

Traffic signals were modified to only allow left turns only during a green arrow. In addition to changes to the signal phasing, signs were installed to advise motorists of the improvements.

AT senior receives several jazz music honors When watching Alejandro Salazar perform on the drums, his passion and love for music are immediately clear. His facial expressions reflect the mood of the piece he’s playing, and audience members can often be seen smiling in response to his enthusiastic movements.

Salazar, a senior at Addison Trail, began playing the drums about eight years ago, and he also is a pianist and a recreational singer.

“Music gives me a feeling of escape and allows me to express my emotions,” he said. “I couldn’t imagine my life without being a musician – it’s a beautiful thing to see how your performance affects people and makes them dance and smile.”

Throughout his high school career, Salazar has been a staple in the music program at Addison Trail, and he can be seen in nearly every music and theatre production at the school. And his talents recently earned him several recognitions.

• Kiewit-Wang Mentorship Award: Salazar is one of three 2017-18 recipients of this award, which is given to high school students who show excellence in musicianship as jazz instrumentalists. Candidates who have participated in Jazz Links programs compete by auditioning, and recipients are awarded free music lessons with a Chicago jazz musician of their choice.

• NextGenJazz Emerging Artist: Salazar is one of three recipients of this honor, presented by Jazz Institute of Chicago. The NextGenJazz Emerging Artists Project promotes leadership, creativity and a founda-

ACA hosts docent coffee talk Coffee, sweets and savories were enjoyed while listening to exhibiting artist, printmaker Ben Calvert at the docent “Coffee Talk” on a recent Saturday.

“Volunteers are such an integral part of Addison Center for the Arts,” said ACA executive director Cherylyn Gnadt. “We wanted to host a special event, most likely to become a regular event, to thank and educate them personally on the inner workings of an artist. Ben gave an in depth lecture on his craft and where his ideas come from.”

District 88 honors summer graduates Before its Aug. 28 meeting, the District 88 Board of Education recognized Addison Trail and Willowbrook students for graduating from District 88 during its Summer Commencement celebration.

lem for drivers trying to legally pass a bicyclist with at least three feet of clearance. The travel lanes of most roads lack the width needed for drivers to safely and legally pass a cyclist with at least three feet of clearance while staying within the lane.

In this common situation, most motorists do cross solid centerlines to pass cyclists anyway. However, some drivers choose to pass the cyclist too closely to obey the no-passing zone, and in doing so, illegally squeeze by within the same, too-narrow lane - a scary maneuver sometimes leading to sideswipe crashes.

For long no-passing zones, those drivers obeying both the no-passing zone and the three-feet passing law may not be able to pass a bicycle for a long time.

Under the new law, when there is sufficient distance to do so, drivers in this situation will be allowed to cross into the oncoming lane to safely pass a cyclist who is riding at less than half the posted speed limit. The driver must pass with at least three feet clearance and not exceed the speed limit.

The new legislation will also legalize bicycling on shoulders, a common safety practice of biking.

Current Illinois law largely restricts vehicles driving on a shoulder, with some specified exceptions (e.g. farm tractors and equipment), and the new legislation will add bicycles to the list of exceptions. Having this legal clarity will benefit cyclists as well as road agencies desiring to sign or otherwise designate bicycle routes having paved shoulders.

Addison School District 4’s youngest students started school this week as Preschool for All and Early Childhood classes had their first day on Tuesday, Aug. 29. Most of the districts preschool classes are held at the Addison Early Learning Center, where 140 students attend classes in brightly colored classrooms that were designed specifically for these 3 to 5 year old students. District administrators and ELC teachers and staff welcomed the students to school with smiles and warm greetings as parents took pictures and said their goodbyes.

Addison Trail football team now 2-0 after defeat of York Blazers boys cross-country team showing promise

The Addison Trail football team made it 2-for-2 on the young 2017 season after recording a 14-7 West Suburban Conference crossover win at York.

The victory moved the Blazers to 2-0 overall.

After a scoreless first quarter, Addison Trail led 7-0 at halftime and 14-0 after three quarters. York scored its only touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Addison Trail won the game despite having the ball for only 18:15 compared to York’s 29:45.

Junior quarterback Nick Daudelin went 7-for-11 for 151 yards and threw two touchdown passes with no

interceptions.

Senior running back Nick Dambrose ran 18 times for 50 yards and had a long run of 13 yards. Daudelin had six carries for 52 yards, including a long run of 42 yards. Addison Trail gained 108 yards on the ground (4.2 yards per carry).

Daudelin connected with five different receivers. Christian Cici caught a 67-yard touchdown pass.

Junior Dennis Ionikov had three catches for 32 yards. Dambrose had a 29-yard reception, while Jacob Grygo caught a 13-yard pass and AJ Parnell caught a 10-yard ball.

“We have a committed group of varsity runners that trained hard all summer,” she said. “We’ve improved on our commitment to summer running, ambitious goal-setting and increasing our weekly mileage.”

McDougal added two keys for the Bison will be staying healthy and the continued improvement of the 4-7 runners at the varsity level.

The coach also is looking for big things from McCauley and Bullis.

“They are experienced seniors and are aggressive runners with their eyes on the state meet.”

In terms of team goals, McDougal would like to see the Bison advance either individuals or the team to the state meet. “Another goal is an improvement of time for our top 7 runners and continuing to increase our runners’ strength, speed and endurance.”

Willowbrook boys soccer team looks to take next step

The Willowbrook boys soccer team gave new coach Eddie DeLaCruz a nice present recently.

The Warriors opened the season with a 3-2 non-conference victory against Elmwood Park, making the new varsity coach a winner in his debut.

“The elephant is now off my back being my first year as head varsity coach,” said DeLaCruz.

DeLaCruz takes over a Willowbrook team that went 8-9 last season and 2-4 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division play (fifth-place).

Returning for Willowbrook is senior captain Miguel Correa, who earned all-conference and all-sectional honorable-mention awards last year.

“Miguel is an attacking center-mid who will lead our team in assists this year. That’s what I’m hoping for,” said DeLaCruz.

also returns for his third varsity season. DeLaCruz said he’ll hold down the defense as the team’s center back.

Senior captain Patrick Florey also returns at a forward position. “Patrick will be scoring most of our goals this season and will have a big season as well,” the coach predicted.

In goal for Willowbrook is returner Mario Giase. “Mario is one of the best in our area and will be destined for a big year as well after last year starting as a sophomore,” DeLaCruz pointed out. “He is destined for big things in his final two seasons. He’s one of the best in the area in my opinion. The sky is the limit with this player. He has grown to 6-1 and will continue to grow academically and athletically. He is the total package as a student-athlete.”

A key newcomer to the team is senior forward Efren Gomez. “He just started and will be a great 1-2 punch at the top with Patrick,” said DeLaCruz.

“He has a ton of skill on the ball and

great field presence.”

Depth in the midfield and forward positions will be a key strength for the Warriors. “Rotating players in and out will keep players energized and staying healthy,” said DeLaCruz.

DeLaCruz said one thing he’ll have to keep an eye on is depth on the defensive side. “We have great players on defense but not as much depth as my attackers,” he explained. “Our two senior center backs will help out adjusting our team tactically when pressure mounts up when the other team goes off on runs.”

DeLaCruz knows the WSC Gold will be competitive once again. “Our soccer conference is one of the hardest in the state,” he said. “Morton can’t be dethroned in the conference the last seven years. My outlook on this year is to be above .500 record-wise and we’re also looking to improve on our fifth-place finish in conference.”

The Willowbrook football team went toe-to-toe with defending West Suburban Conference Silver Division champion Hinsdale Central in a 27-21 setback in Week 2 action in Hinsdale.

The loss put the Warriors at 1-1 overall.

The IC Catholic Prep football team saw its 15-game winning streak come to an end after a 26-23 non-conference loss to St. Laurence at Lewis Stadium at the Plunkett Athletic Complex in Elmhurst.

The loss put the defending state champions at an even 1-1 on the season. The Knights hadn’t lost a game before the St. Laurence contest dating back to the end of the 2015 season.

Quarterback Luke Ricobene went 11-for-21 for 108 yards and two touchdowns. Junior Khalil Saunders completed 4 of 7 passes for 47 yards.

On the ground, Lazerick Eatman ran 14 times for 45 yards. Ricobene ran seven times for 63 yards and Saunders ran five times for eight yards and had a touchdown.

Viewpoint Reader says Harvey devastation intensified by climate change This week watching the devastation of Hurricane Harvey in Southeast Texas has been extremely sad.

It is even sadder that the severity of the storm was intensified by climate change, and many of the extreme effects probably would have been avoided if the U.S. and the rest of the world were addressing climate change effectively.

In the case of Harvey, the storm was stronger because of warmer ocean water. In recent years ocean temperatures have increased consid-

erably, and this warmer water provides fuel to increase storm strength.

Experts like Kevin Trenberth, a senior scientist at the U.S. National Center for Atmospheric Research, confirm this link. Trenberth has stated that the main fuel for Harvey was warm water in the Gulf (as much as 7.2 degrees F above average). This warm water also is present at greater depths than ever before, so that during the hurricane, even when the water was churned up by the intense winds, there was no colder water to

rise and quench the storm as usually happens during storms in the Gulf.

Trenberth, in a recent article in The Atlantic, said that research indicates that up to 30% of the total rainfall from Harvey can be attributed to human actions that have resulted in climate change.

It is time for Congress to make the link between the emission of greenhouse gases and catastrophic storms.

Making this connection is not “politicizing” disasters; it is common sense to accept the evidence, and for Con-

gress to enact legislation to address this most pressing crisis of our time.

Some conservative Republicans are already supporting action on Climate Change. The Climate Leadership Council, which is led by Republican statesmen James Baker, Henry Paulson, George Shultz and others, favors pricing carbon and returning the revenue to Americans to “strengthen our economy, reduce regulation, help

working-class Americans, shrink government, and promote national security.” Additionally, 26 Republicans in the House of Representatives have joined the bipartisan Climate Solutions Caucus. These members of Congress know that we can’t give up on passing sensible legislation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Congress needs to act soon.

About 1 in 10 children has asthma, a chronic lung disease that irritates and narrows the airways. It can lead to missed days of school, limits on activities, and even in some cases, life-threatening episodes.

Fortunately, good asthma management can help most kids with asthma lead a virtually normal life, including being physically active.

“The key to keeping these children out of the hospital is education,” said Michelle Vermeland, RRT, a respiratory therapist at Edward Hospital.

“And if you can make the lesson fun, it’s more likely to stick.”

This line of thinking is what led to Camp Breathe Easy, a program that Edward Hospital runs each summer for 7- to 11-year-old kids with asthma. The 2017 Camp was held July 31 – Aug. 4, on the Edward campus in Naperville. The camp is funded by the Edward Foundation.

One of the camp’s popular and physically active learning activities was the obstacle course. In order to advance from challenge to challenge, the kids had to correctly answer one of the questions based on the day’s lessons.

Another activity tied in to kids’ fascination with all things gross.

Campers learned about mucous while making a concoction out of corn starch and water – coloring options were white, yellow or green.

Better looking products came out of other craft activities, such as tie-dyed tee shirts.
