Community rallies around St. Philip student on Sept. 6 Match sought for first-grader who needs bone marrow transplant By Dee Longfellow For The Independent

ADDISON — A first grade student at St. Philip School was recently diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia and is currently in dire need of a bone marrow transplant. Six-year-old Sophia Trujillo has a diverse mix of nationalities, being half Filipino and a mix of Italian, Spanish and Irish, making it difficult to find a match, according to doctors. A report was recently published which included comments from Dr. William Goodell, Sophia’s oncologist/ hematologist at Advocate Children’s Hospital in Park Ridge. “Aplastic anemia is really bone marrow failure,” Dr. Goodell said. “And, like any other organ failure, this is a life-threatening disease.” He further explained that Sophia has low platelets, which doesn’t allow her blood to clot the way it should, so she bruises easily. He said a bone marrow transplant was the best treatment for severe aplastic anemia, which are most commonly obtained from volunteer donors. “Stem cells for bone marrow transplantation must be matched perfectly to prevent

rejection or serious reactions in the recipient,” Goodell added. “Bone marrow transplant teams look for the best available match. If a perfect

match is not available, many times there is availability of an ‘acceptable’ match.” The local community, not only at St. Philip but also the

Addison community at large, is stepping up to help Sophia on Sunday, September 6, between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. at St. Philip The Apostle

Church in Addison. There will be a blood drive along with a bake sale to benefit Sophia,
