Man charged in crash that killed Lombard resident

According to a release issued by Elmhurst Police Chief Michael Ruth, Elmhurst police have reported the arrest of a driver involved in a fatal traffic crash that occurred at 2:15 p.m. on Aug. 10 on westbound Roosevelt Road, west of York Street in Elmhurst. On that date, Elmhurst Police and Fire Departments responded to the traffic crash scene and located two involved vehicles. One of the drivers, William Bartolucci, 69, of Lombard, was critically injured in the traffic crash, extricated from his vehicle and transported to Elmhurst Hospital.

The Elmhurst Police Department conducted an investigation of the traffic crash with the assistance of the DuPage County Accident Reconstruction Team and the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office.

The investigation revealed the other driver was operating his vehicle at a high rate of speed when he collided with Mr. Bartolucci’s vehicle, causing Bartolucci’s vehicle to leave the roadway and roll over. Mr. Bartolucci later succumbed to injuries resulting from the crash on Sept. 9, 2017, at Loyola Medical Center in Maywood.

The Elmhurst Police Department charged Wayne A. Veldman, 63, of the 4000 block of Highland Ave, Downers Grove, with one count of Reckless Homicide in relation to the traffic crash pursuant to an arrest warrant issued on September 19, 2017. Mr. Veldman surrendered himself on Thursday, Sept. 21 at the DuPage County Judicial Center where he posted bond and was released pending his next court date.

ATHS class of ’17 grad receives Golden Apple

Addison Trail alumnus Jeremy Sechan (class of 2017) has been inducted into the 2017 class of Golden Apple Scholars – a group of 234 aspiring teachers, all of Jeremy Sechan whom have dedicated themselves to teaching in an Illinois school-of-need for five years after graduation.

According to a press release, “The Golden Apple Scholars of Illinois is a scholarship program that identifies talented high school seniors and firstand second-year college students who have the promise and drive to be excellent teachers in high-need schools.”

The program provides tuition assistance to each future teacher while he or she pursues an undergraduate education. Beginning the summer after high school graduation and continuing throughout their undergraduate years, scholars benefit from multiple teaching internships, ongoing academic and career mentoring and coursework on the art of teaching delivered by Golden Apple Award-winning teachers.

IGMOA looks back on five years of video gaming Some call it an economic success story; others wonder why state still broke

This month of September marks the fifth year that Illinois has allowed video gaming at various communities throughout the state.

A report released by the Illinois Gaming Machine Operations Association (IGMOA) shows a positive report in terms of revenue for the state and the municipalities who have seized the opportunity to allow these money-making machines into their lives.

“In addition to providing a fun source of entertainment, the machines have also become a significant and crucial source of economic benefits across the state at a time when other leisure pursuits are stagnating or declining,” said IGMOA in a release issued on Sept. 20. “Today, [video gaming] is a proven economic driver for Illinois’ economy.”

The first introduction of video gaming in Illinois took place in September of 2012, when 13 establishments installed 61 terminals among them to begin the gaming experience to residents.

According to the IGMOA, the first month’s tax revenues were $27,000 for the state and local municipalities.

In the five years since, video gaming has produced more than $1 billion in state and local tax revenues. The IGMOA points out that the numbers grow month after month, “fueled by innovations in technology and millions of additional investment dollars

that help generate and maintain player interest and improve the overall entertainment experience.”

The association points out that the video gaming industry has allowed thousands of small businesses thrive while employing “tens of thousands of employees statewide, many in otherwise economically-challenged regions of our state.”

“In the 970 communities that permit video gaming, countless numbers of bars, restaurants, fraternal and veteran organizations have prospered from the games, while hundreds of new small businesses have been created and thrived with the entertainment offered to customers by the machines,” according to Ivan Fernandez, IGMOA’s executive director. “Our members have invested millions of dollars into the Illinois video gaming industry because they understood it could provide an economic lifeline for many small businesses, including their own, and would become an important revenue source for the state and local governments to shore up budgets and provide help for their communities.

“As we look back at all the good news generated through video gaming over the past five years, we are encouraged that more communities are embracing our form of entertainment and we look forward to providing new job opportunities in the hospitality industry while providing customers an entertainment option to have fun responsibly.”

To address the concerns of medical professionals hesitant to prescribe epinephrine to Elmhurst Police and police departments across the state as part of the new Annie LeGere Law, State Sen. Chris Nybo (R-Elmhurst) has filed an amendment to the law to offer greater liability protection for participating health providers.

“The Annie LeGere Law was a huge community effort, and we are getting so close to seeing it come to fruition,” said Nybo. “I’ve spoken with law enforcement, medical professionals and local officials to file an amendment that I believe will make health providers feel more comfortable prescribing epinephrine to law enforcement and get EpiPens into the hands of police officers all across Illinois. Come Legislative Session in January, I hope our community advocates will join me again in passing this life-saving legislation.”

The Annie LeGere Law (House Bill 4462), effective as of January 2017, allows for Illinois police officers to carry and administer epinephrine auto-injectors (EpiPens) on duty as an emergency measure to reverse life-threatening allergic reactions—following training and procedural requirements.

While the Elmhurst Police have

added EpiPens and extensive device training to their budget for implementation, they require a physician to sign off on the training course and prescribe the epinephrine—which has been an obstacle due to language in the law concerning medical professionals’ liability. Working with DuPage County Board Member Pete DiCianni, Nybo recently filed Senate Bill 2226, which states that a physician, physician’s assistant or advanced practice registered nurse with prescriptive authority who will provide a prescription or standing order for epinephrine for an Illinois police department will not be subject to civil or professional liability for law

Addison Sept. 21 Patrick R. James, 27, of Addison, was charged with DUI drugs near Lombard and Belmont at around 1:11 a.m.

Sept. 15 • Olivia M. Fleming, 28 of Clarendon Hills, was charged with obstructing identification at a hotel in the 1600 block of W. Lake St. at around 4:19 a.m. Police said officers responded to the hotel for an unclothed female suspect in the laundry room. According to police, Fleming provided officers with a false name to avoid arrest on outstanding warrants. Police said Fleming had two original warrants for retail theft out of the Warrenville Police Department—one an original warrant out of the Woodridge Police Department, and a failure to appear retail theft warrant out of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Department.

• A 39-year-old Glendale Heights man was charged with domestic battery in the 1600 block of W. Lake St. at around 11:30 a.m. Police said the suspect pushed the victim to the ground at a hotel, where the victim fell onto her face and elbows. The suspect then reportedly punched the victim in the eye.

Former Park Place employee gets 12 years for stealing from senior residents

Two men charged with armed robbery, aggravated vehicular hijacking DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced last week that bond has been set for a Chicago man accused of following a Wheaton couple on their way home and stealing their car at gunpoint.

Carlos Moore, 26, of 5226 W. Polk, appeared in Bond Court where Judge Joseph Bugos set bond at $250,000 with 10% to apply. Moore has been charged with one count of Armed Robbery With a Firearm and one count of Aggravated Vehicular Hijacking With a Firearm. Both charges are Class X Felonies punishable by up to 30 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

An accomplice of Moore, Phillip Smith 25, faces the same charges in regards to the alleged incident. Smith is currently being held in custody in the Cook County Jail.

It is alleged that on February 22, 2017, at approximately 10:10 p.m., Moore, Smith and an unnamed accomplice followed a Wheaton couple as they drove to their home. It is alleged that after the couple pulled into their garage, Moore, Smith and the accomplice pulled their vehicle into the driveway behind them. It is further alleged that Moore and Smith, wearing masks, got out of their vehicle. It is alleged that Moore then pointed a gun at the wife and demanded the keys to their vehicle. It is further alleged that the wife gave her entire purse to Moore and that he, Smith and the accomplice stole the couple’s vehicle. A short time later, officers spotted the allegedly stolen vehicle but eventually lost the vehicle following a high-speed chase. The vehicle was later located in a Chicago parking lot. An investigation into the incident, conducted by the Wheaton Police Department, led authorities to Moore and Smith. The third individual allegedly involved in the robbery is not yet in custody as the investigation into the matter continues.

Moore’s next court appearance is scheduled for October 16, 2017, in front of Judge George Bakalis. No court date is set for Smith at this time.

Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendants’ guilt.

A former assisted living employee was sentenced to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty on 11 counts of residential burglary. Eugene Dorsey, 31, of Chicago, stole Eugene Dorsey items from the homes of residents of an Elmhurst senior living facility he worked for in 2015.

Elmhurst Police first began their investigation in November 2015, after items including jewelry, were reported missing from a resident’s home in the independent living side

of Park Place senior living facility, according to a release. (The facility is divided into an independent living side and an assisted living side.)

According to DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, the investigation revealed that on several occasions between Nov. 4 and Nov. 25, 2015, Dorsey, a nurse’s assistant, entered at least 11 residents’ homes, all located on the independent living side of the facility, and stole items from the residents including rings, bracelets and necklaces. Dorsey then pawned the stolen items. Dorsey worked strictly on the assisted living side of the facility and should not have been present on the independent living side at all.

“Thinking only of himself, Mr. Dorsey stole thousands of dollars worth of valuables, many of which held significant sentimental value, from his victims,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in a release. “The fact that all of his victims are more than 80 years old and had placed a tremendous amount of trust in Mr. Dorsey, makes his crimes particularly appalling. As one of society’s most vulnerable populations, our seniors deserve our love and respect. They do not deserve to have their valuables stolen from them and pawned.”

Dorsey will be required to serve 50 percent of his sentence before being eligible for parole.

Health Dept. reports 5th case of West Nile Virus in county Residents urged to take precautions, be aware of symptoms

The DuPage County Health Department announced last week that there are now five human cases of West Nile virus (WNV) that have been reported in the county in 2017.

The most recent case is a woman in her 80s from Wheaton.

“The recent warm weather that followed a cool spell may have caused some people to be less cautious,” said Karen Ayala, Health Department Executive Director.

“Please protect yourself and your family because the mosquitoes that carry West Nile virus are still active.”

The Health Department is remind-

ing residents to “Fight the Bite” and protect against mosquitoes by following the 4 D’s of Defense: • Drain standing water around your home and yard; • Defend by using insect repellent containing DEET when outdoors; • Dress with long sleeves, long pants, and closed-toe shoes when outside; • Wear repellant from Dusk to Dawn, when mosquitoes are most active.

The Health Department’s Personal Protection Index (PPI) remains at Level 3 (high risk) because of the number of mosquito batches

testing positive for WNV. Level 3 indicates high numbers of infected mosquitoes in most areas, and multiple human cases of WNV disease in DuPage County. View the PPI at dupagehealth.org.

The PPI provides a real-time snapshot of WNV activity, which ranges from Level 0 (zero) meaning no risk, to Level 3 announcing a high level of risk with multiple human cases of WNV. The PPI is updated every Wednesday at 3 p.m. throughout the WNV season.

Village issues Roadside Safety Checkpoint Notice Westbound Lake Street to be effected Sept. 29-30

The Addison Police Department will conduct a Roadside Safety Checkpoint from 9 p.m., Friday, Sept. 29, to 1 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 30 on US Route 20 (Lake Street) at Maple Avenue.

Vehicles traveling westbound will be stopped in a pre-established, systematic fashion for a brief inspection of safety and driver violations.

Police will check vehicle registrations, driver’s licenses, proof of insurance, and driver sobri-

ety in addition to vehicle safety violations.

The purpose of conducting the Roadside Safety Checkpoint is to enhance the safety of the motoring public in the Village of Addison.

A statewide coordinated effort to reduce drinking and driving is underway and the Addison Police Department is a proud partner in this venture.

The police department hopes that citizens can look at this minor inconvenience as their contribution to the safety of the motoring public and their opportunity to be part of the solution.

Addison Trail boys soccer team defeats Willowbrook Blazers retain District 88 Soccer Derby trophy

The Addison Trail boys soccer team started off the West Suburban Conference Gold Division portion of its schedule on the right foot recently.

The Blazers were 2-1 winners against District 88 neighbor Willowbrook.

That win keeps the District 88 Soccer Derby trophy at Addison Trail for the next year. The Warriors also defeated Hinsdale South 3-2 to move to 2-0 in conference play.

In other recent play, the Blazers lost 2-0 to Metea Valley in the last game of the PepsiCo tournament.

Through late last week, Addison Trail was 3-5-3.

Of late, the Blazers have received key contributions from Luis Silva, Lukas Rodriguez and Matthew Moran.

“Luis has been really solid for us this season,” said Addison Trail coach Ryan Dini. “He is a junior center midfielder and is constantly working hard to get possession of the ball for us in the middle. Lukas has emerged as a dangerous forward for us. He is a junior and has excellent speed and makes dangerous runs to get himself into good scoring position. Matthew has been a rock for us in the back on defense. He has been very consistent and has made the game more simple for us with his leadership in the back.”

Through late last week, junior Melvin Mora was the team’s leading scorer with four goals. Rodriguez has two goals and two assists. Christian Garcia has two goals and one assist and Martin Juarez has two goals and

Willowbrook football takes control of first place in conference Addison Trail football team loses to Downers Grove South

One of two blemishes on Willowbrook’s conference record last year was a loss at home to Hinsdale South.

A year later, the Warriors turned the tables, scoring a 38-33 West Suburban Conference Gold Division win over Hinsdale South in Darien to take sole possession of first place in the league.

Willowbrook moved to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in conference play. The Warriors need one more win to become playoff eligible. Willowbrook made it to the Class 7A state quarterfinals last year.

Willowbrook led 21-14 after a high-scoring first quarter. The Warriors scored a field goal in the second quarter and led 24-20 at halftime. The two teams traded touchdowns in the third quarter with Willowbrook leading 31-27 heading into the final frame.

Willowbrook has won three games in a row after losing by six points to defending WSC Silver champion Hinsdale Central in the second game of the season. It was Willowbrook’s third game this season where it has scored 35 or more points.

The Warriors host 0-5 York Friday in Villa Park.

Addison Trail football The Addison Trail football team lost 28-0 to Downers Grove South in a West Suburban Conference Gold Division contest.

The Blazers dropped to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in WSC Gold play.

After a scoreless first quarter, Downers Grove South scored two touchdowns in the second quarter and single touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters.

Mike Ruffolo passed for 88 yards and also was the team’s leading rusher with 18 carries for 33 yards. Addison Trail was limited to 27 net-rushing yards in the game.

Dennis Ionikov caught three passes for 36 yards. Jacob Grygo had two catches for 20 yards and Nick Daudelin had one catch for 24 yards.

Also key of late for the Blazers has been sophomore Brian Hernandez and senior midfielder Luis Saucedo.

“We brought Brian up to play defense for us and he has been rock-solid in the back,” said Dini. “He has played the last four games for us and doesn’t come off the field. Luis has done a good job of getting assists for us from the outside midfield positions.

He has three assists in his last five games, so he has impressed.”

Dini has seen movement forward from his offense recently. “The offense is much improved over the past two weeks. We changed our formation due to two season-ending injuries for two of our senior starters.”

Dini noted Elvis Amezquita broke his clavicle bone and George Markopoulos broke his foot.

“This forced us to change our style a bit and our team has adjusted well,” said Dini. “We have a lot of interchangeable players who can play multiple positions, so depending on our opponent we have been able to make adjustments to help us succeed. This has been key in our last

two games. We have scored five total goals in those two games.”

Addison Trail has allowed 18 goals in its first 11 games (1.63 goals-against average).

“Our defense has been up and down this season,” said Dini. “We have been very solid in the back most games this season, but also have went up against some teams that have had top talent offensively.”

Jean Avila, a senior, and Sam Sandoval, a junior, are the team’s two goalies.

“They split time most games,” said Dini. “Jean is a senior who was part of last year’s successful playoff run.

Sam is a junior who is new to the team and has played well. Both goalies support each other and work really well together in training sessions and pregame warmups.”

Dini has been impressed with how the team has dealt with the injury aspect.

“Our team is doing a great job of the next-man-up philosophy,” he said. “We have had two guys out for the season with injuries and another who had to miss four games. Our

players play the positions our team needs them to play and they don’t ask why.”

Equally impressive, Dini said, is the conference start.

“I also like how our team has turned it up in conference play,” he said. “Our focus has turned to trying to finish as best as possible in conference and to get ready for the state playoffs. Our set pieces have improved as well because our players have taken this seriously and know we need to score on these to beat the really good teams.”

The coach also likes how his team is cognizant of going the extra step during close games. “I’m impressed with our resiliency,” he said. “We know every game is going to be close and we have to do the little things well to win such as 50-50 balls, extra effort on plays and we have to limit our mental mistakes. Those all are our key factors in these close games.”

Addison Trail was scheduled to play at Leyden earlier this week and will host York tonight at 6:30 p.m., for the team’s annual homecoming game.

Willwbrook boys golf team wins Leyden quad Warriors boys soccer team dealing with injuries

The Willowbrook boys golf team recently won the Leyden Eagle Quad at par-70 White Pines in Bensenville.

The Warirors shot a season-low 342, beating Fenton by seven strokes.

Junior Joey Guthrie and junior Taylor Sarovich each shot 85. Senior Buddy Martens and sophomore Logan Rattana each shot 86.

In other recent action, the Warriors lost 169-172 to Downers Grove South in a West Suburban Conference Gold Division contest at Village Greens of Woodridge (par 36).

Guthrie shot 41, while Martens had a 42 for Willowbrook. Sarovich shot 44 and Rattana had a 45. Guthrie earned meet medalist honors with his 41 showing.

Willowbrook then closed out its regular season with a 335-344 WSC Gold loss to Addison Trail at par-72 Prairie Bluff. The match was contested over 18 holes.

Martens and Rattana each had 83s to lead Willowbrook. Guthrie shot 89, as did junior Jackson Hathaway.

Willowbrook was scheduled to play in the WSC Gold championship earlier this week.

“These injuries continue to pile up for the team, but we’re getting two big players back which will help for our playoff push,” said Willowbrook coach Ed DeLaCruz.

With its starting goalie out, Willowbrook has turned to Hugo Gutierrez. “Hugo has been playing a lot better,” said DeLaCruz.

Senior central defenders Steven Creda and Tomas Hernandez also have been contributing on defense.

“They have been outstanding all year. Tomas is one of our captains,” said DeLaCruz.

On the offensive side, senior captain Miguel Correa leads the team with four goals and three assists.

Junior defender Aaron Guallpa also has been a key contributor.

“Aaron is a standout player and a utility player for us,” said DeLaCruz. “I can put him in anywhere and he knows how to play that position.”

Willowbrook has played without scoring threats Nico Hernandez and senior captain Patrick Florey. “Nico had a season-ending injury at the start of the season,” said DeLaCruz.

“He would have scored between 1520 goals. That’s tough for anybody to replace. He would have been one of the best players in the area. Patrick also was out for a month. Our forwards are young and a bit inexperienced.”

Willowbrook hosts its senior day against Downers Grove South on Tuesday, Oct. 3.

“We’re making sure we continue to fight and be competitive in every game,” said DeLaCruz. “We are starting to prepare for the final quarter of our season and playoff push.

We’ll have some injured players coming back who will help out.”

Willowbrook girls volleyball The Willowbrook girls volleyball team recorded a 25-15, 25-14 West Suburban Conference Gold Division win against Morton.

The win moved the Warriors to 7-9 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

Bison football team loses to Glenbard South

The Fenton girls volleyball team went to the recent Ridgewood tournament in Norridge and turned in quite a showing.

The Bison scored wins over Ridgewood, Lisle, Woodlands Academy and DePaul Prep to finish second in the tournament. Fenton’s only loss was to Chicago Taft.

Fenton also recently dropped a Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division contest to Glenbard South, leaving it at 10-11 overall and 0-5 in MSC Blue play.

At Ridgewood, Mackenzie Miller racked up 74 assists and as of late last week was approaching 300 for the season.

Vicky Krzyszkowski had 99 kills and also was the team leader in blocks with 26. Kukielko also was

the leading the team in digs with 85.

Fenton coach Kelly Kleidorfer has seen progress made on both offense and defense through 21 matches.

“The offense is really coming along,” she said. “We are running a lot of different options and the girls are executing at a high level. Our defense has really been improving.

The passing is beginning to improve which is allowing us to run more sets on offense.”

Kleidorfer also has seen a change in the team’s mindset. “We are learning what it takes to compete at a high level,” she said. “I’ve been impressed with our ability to close out matches.

It’s been fun to see.”

Payton Pugliese, Denisse Ramirez and Isa Lozada also have been key contributors of late. “All three of these girls started the season on the bench and have worked themselves into the lineup and are producing on the court. It’s great to see.”

The Warriors went to Darien in Week 5 and came away with a key five-point win that gave them sole possession of the West Suburban Conference Gold Division lead with three games to play against teams that had a combined 1-11 record heading into Week 5. The Warriors have been led on offense by running back Jack Jessen.

Fenton boys soccer The Fenton boys soccer team defeated Downers Grove South 4-0 in a non-conference matchup.

Angel Barriga scored a goal for Fenton on a penalty kick. Branny Salas scored two goals and Ivan Jaramillo added a goal as well.

Carlos Popoca earned the shut out in goal for the Bison.

Its Week 5 win was against a Wheaton Academy team that owned a 3-1 record. It’s previous four wins came against Morton (33-0), Wauconda (43-21), Ridgewood (35-7) and Aurora Central Catholic (48-16). Those four teams had a combined record of 3-13 heading into Week 5, the latter two being games against teams from the smaller-school Metro Suburban Conference Red Division.

The Don of A New Day in Sports I had a great interview last month with Dee Longfellow and Paul DelGuidice of the Addison Independent newspaper and learned a lot about the newspaper business. It’s not always glamorous having to deal with; long hours, harsh criticism and complaints about “Fake News.”

My prediction that the Chicago Bears would beat the Atlanta Falcons did not come true but they had a really chance to win at the end. I still think that they will win eight games. What do you fans think?
