Elmhurst police investigate aggravated vehicular hijacking Suspects flee, victim’s car later found abandoned in Chicago

According to a release issued by the City of Elmhurst and Elmhurst Police Chief Michael Ruth, there was an incident of aggravated vehicular hijacking that reportedly took place in the parking lot of the 7-11 convenience store at

574 S. York St. in Elmhurst.

The release indicated that on Friday, Sept. 17 at 8:45 a.m. Elmhurst Police were dispatched to the parking lot of the 7-11 on a report of a vehicular hijacking involving the display of a firearm. Upon arrival, officers met with the victim who said his vehicle had

been stolen by two men who were last seen driving it south on York Street.

The victim reported no injuries.

Investigation of the incident has determined that four men occupying a Black Porsche Cayenne SUV pulled into the parking lot of the 7-11 as the victim was entering his parked car. A

male suspect exited the Porsche and approached the victim while holding a black handgun. The suspect demanded his car, key fob, and entered the driver seat of the car. A second male suspect exited the Porsche and entered the front passenger seat of the victim’s car. The victim’s car and Porsche then

COVID-19 cases, related hospitalizations decrease in DuPage County Last week, COVID-19 cases and related hospitalizations were headed in the right direction as decreases are reported across DuPage County.

Still, community transmission remains at a “High” level with a 7-day average of 145 new cases per 100,000 reported, per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) encourages residents to continue following the mask guidance, maintain physical distancing, and get vaccinated at the earliest opportunity to prevent further community transmission.

“The decrease in COVID-19 case activity is encouraging and an early sign that the prevention actions we are taking are working,” said Karen Ayala, executive director of DuPage County Health Department. “I want to thank the municipalities, businesses, schools, community organizations, and residents who have done their part, including the more than 500,000 residents who have been fully vaccinated and all those who continue wearing a mask in indoor public settings. Our message now is for everyone to keep working together to help our community emerge from this pandemic.”

According to the latest CDC COVID-19 vaccination data, DuPage County ranks 218th out of 3,283 counties, which is in the top 10 percent among U.S. counties with residents fully vaccinated. Currently, 88 percent of eligible residents 12 years and older in DuPage County have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose, and 70 percent are fully

vaccinated.

Of residents 65 years and older, 99.9 percent have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose, and 85 percent are fully vaccinated. However, among 12 to 17-year-olds in DuPage County, 77 percent have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose, and only 58 percent are fully vaccinated.

To help reduce spread in schools and the community, all unvaccinated persons aged 12 years and older are urged to get vaccinated against COVID-19 as soon as possible.

Currently, people with moderately to severely compromised immune systems are recommended to receive a third dose of a mRNA COVID-19 vaccine. Those who believe they are eligible for a third vaccine dose should talk to their healthcare provider.

Third-dose vaccinations are available through local pharmacies or healthcare providers and can be given 28 days after receiving the second dose.

DCHD is actively monitoring the situation regarding COVID-19 boosters for fully vaccinated people.

Although booster shots are expected to begin this fall, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) must first authorize a third dose of the Pfizer and Moderna mRNA vaccines and the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) must issue booster dose recommendations based on the evidence presented.

The FDA scheduled a meeting with its vaccine advisers Sept.

17 to discuss booster doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. As more information becomes available, DCHD will share additional updates.

U.S. News ranks Elmhurst University’s nursing program among best in nation this year, to No. 146, on U.S. News’ rankings of the country’s Best Graduate Schools. The graduate nursing program ranks sixth in Illinois, again behind much larger institutions such as the University of Illinois at Chicago and Rush University.

“For a smaller nursing program to be in the top 40 percent nationwide, and ranked sixth in the state of Illinois with large and well-known programs, speaks to the quality of the nursing programs at Elmhurst University,” said Diane Salvador, executive director of the department of nursing and health sciences.

“As we maintain our focus on student-centeredness, academic rigor and high-quality faculty, we look forward to continued success for the program and our students.”

Elmhurst rose several spots this year in the Best Value Schools category, from 23rd to 17th among universities in the Midwest region. Elmhurst University’s undergraduate nursing program ranks among the best in the nation, according to the latest rankings by U.S. News & World Report.

Published on Sept. 13, U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges for 2022 announced its first-ever rankings of bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) programs. Of 694 top nursing programs across the country, Elmhurst’s ranks 288th, with the very top spots occupied by far larger, research-based institutions such as the University of Pennsylvania, Duke University, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.

Among Illinois schools, Elmhurst ranks sixth. The rankings are based on the judgments of deans and senior faculty members of nursing schools and departments, and institutions around the country.

Addison VFW Post 7446 celebrates 75th anniversary

Harry Truman was President of the United States. A first-class postage stamp was three cents and a gallon of gas was 21 cents. Notorious and Gilda were on the screens of the movie theaters and on the radio, one might hear The Ink Spots performing “The Gypsy,” or Frank Sinatra crooning, “Five Minutes More.” Gals (or “Cookies”) wore shoulder pads and defined waistlines, while gents wore “Zoot Suits,” lace-up oxfords and fedora hats.

The year was 1946 and it was the year the Addison VFW Post 7446 was first established, on May 25, 1946 to be exact. The first Post Commander was Warren Mosley and, some 60 Post Commanders later, Mike Henkelman is currently at the helm.

The evening began with a Call to Order by Henkelman, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance led by Royal Woolfolk and others. Lynda Grossi, VFW Auxiliary Chaplain, delivered the invocation and described the “Missing Man Table,” set at the center of the room – a reminder of those who didn’t make it back home after serving their country..

Library to present program on ghost hunter

Addison paranormal investigator to present ‘Ghostology and Ghost Hunting in Chicagoland’

At 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 18, at the Addison Public Library, Addison resident Tony Szabelski will present “Ghostology and Ghost Hunting in the Chicagoland Area” with fellow paranormal investigator Jack Chavez.

When Szabelski and Chavez visit the library for their program, they’ll talk about the technology that comes along on paranormal investigations and share stories of the places they’ve been.

Ahead of their presentation, Szabelski gave the library a 1-on-1 interview to share his experience as a paranormal investigator.

Szabelski originally hails from the Old Town neighborhood of Chicago and has been living in Addison for over 20 years now. He frequently uses the library to research ahead of his paranormal investigations.

“Usually people don’t know how much research goes into it,” said Szabelski. “I used to get old newspapers through interlibrary loan and look at them through microfilm readers.

We’re always looking for stories, for history, to back up the ghost stories and sightings.”

Szabelski’s interest in the paranormal started at a young age. After his father passed away when Szabelski was just 14, he began wondering if there could be life after death.

“At his funeral, I was the only one [near his casket] and I just thought in my head, ‘if he can give me some sort of sign that he’s OK, that I wouldn’t worry about him anymore,’” said Szabelski. “And in that moment, the lights in the funeral parlor went off and came

right back on. That was my sign right there.”

It wasn’t until years later that Szabelski met other people who were in-

terested in investigating the afterlife.

He started joining some paranormal groups and eventually found a professional avenue for pursuing his interest

in the paranormal. At a paranormal conference in Decatur, he met Diane Ladley, then-owner of a company who ran historic haunted tours of Naperville, and after going on a few of her tours he received a job offer from her.

He worked for Ladley from 2011 to 2017 as a tour guide, putting his research skills and charisma to great use.

Szabelski now works for Chicago Hauntings and has been exceptionally busy with tours, lectures, and other events in the last year. When he isn’t giving tours, Szabelski enjoys going on paranormal investigations with fellow enthusiasts, travelling to haunted locales in Illinois and neighboring states.

“There are two different kinds of investigations: ones where you pay to go to an old, historic place that uses the money to keep the building running, and ones in private homes where people are experiencing something weird,” said Szabelski, “But for both, you’re looking for the same thing: the possibility of life after death, something still existing there.”

Szabelski has visited a number of famously haunted places in the Midwest, including the Rhodes Hotel in Atlanda, Ind.; Ashmore Estates in Ashmore, Ill.; and the Congress Hotel in Chicago. At each, he’s experienced things he couldn’t explain, like shadow figures lurking across the room and watching colleagues head down a hallway only to for them to disappear when Szabelski followed them. And while these experiences may scare some, Szabelski is unfazed.

“Most of the people I know aren’t

terrified by it. We’re curious, maybe even excited by it,” Szabelski said.

“The investigation experience varies place by place. You can never really expect anything to happen. You have to go in with an open mind to see what’s going to happen.”

In addition to visiting larger buildings like historically haunted hotels, Szabelski has also done a number of private home investigations, even in Addison.

“Years ago we did an investigation of a lady’s house who lived out near the bowling alley. She was haunted in the place for years, so much so that she always felt depressed when she was at home,” Szabelski said. “We came in and brought a medium who said he got rid of the spirit, and she said she felt much lighter afterwards. A lot of times, with hauntings, it’s more about feelings that affect you than things like slamming doors.”

Whether it’s a tour or lecture through his job or a paranormal investigation done as a hobby, Szabelski gets great satisfaction from his work and looks forward to his program on Oct. 18.

“People want to know if there’s more to this existence than what we see. Did we come from somewhere, are we going back to somewhere when our life is done? With every tour, I hope people come away a little more educated about what we do and a little more open-minded,” said Szabelski.

“It’s just a passion. It’s a lot of fun to give the tours and be out there with people and tell stories to them. And it’s always new, always different.”

Reflections on the 20th anniversary of 9/11 updates from my COVID-19 Global Vaccination Caucus. I was pleased to see last week that President Biden is making plans for a global summit on COVID-19 vaccine supplies, manufacturing, and distribution.

Given that the COVID-19 virus has wreaked havoc across the globe, it is only logical that we would form international coalitions to defeat it.

My COVID-19 Global Vaccination Caucus was also encouraged to see last week that the House Energy and Commerce Committee passed its portion of the Build Back Better Act, which included $2 billion to expand global and domestic vaccine manufacturing.

While we need more support to vaccinate the nearly 60 percent of the world yet to receive a single dose of any COVID-19 vaccine, this is still an

important step in our goal of ending this pandemic. The COVID-19 Global Vaccination Caucus is committed to efforts that aggressively attack the virus, such as my NOVID Act which would create a U.S.-led program to vaccinate populations in the 92 poorest countries. This will save lives in those impoverished countries, as well as protect our country from further deadly COVID-19 variants arriving at our shores.

Provisions from my Tobacco Tax Equity Act included in Build Back Better Act Last week, the House Ways and Means Committee passed its portion of the Build Back Better Act, which included provisions from my Tobacco Tax Equity Act. I introduced the Tobacco Tax

Equity Act alongside Senator Durbin to close loopholes in the tax code, raise cigarette taxes for the first time in over a decade, and apply federal taxes on e-cigarettes—such as JUUL products—for the first time.

As the co-founder of the Congressional Caucus to End the Youth Vaping Epidemic and Chairman of the Oversight Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy, I was a strong advocate for updating our tobacco tax code in this package.

E-cigarettes have grown in popularity among our youth population, with 20 percent of high school students reportedly using them in 2020, and it is time they are taxed like cigarettes to discourage their use among kids and teens.

Judiciary Committee heeds my calls for reforming employmentbased green card system After much advocacy efforts, I’m pleased to report that the

House Judiciary Committee passed its portion of the Build Back Better Act this week, which included relief to individuals in the employment-based green card backlog.

As an original cosponsor of the Equal Access to Green Cards for Legal Employment (EAGLE) Act (H.R. 3648), I led 40 Members of Congress in sending a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer on the importance of including this reform in this package.

The provisions included in the Judiciary Committee’s bill include measures to make the system faster, simpler and aid the over 1.2 million individuals stuck in the backlog. I hope that the Senate follows through on the next step and passes this portion of the Build Back Better Act. Raja Krishnamoorthi represents Illinois’ 8th Congressional District, which includes portions of Addison, Wood Dale, Bensenville, Elmhurst, Villa Park and Lombard.

Crime prevention tips you can use

The National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) offers the following crime prevention tips that can help prevent crime at home: • Consider installing motion-sensored lighting that will come on if someone is walking around your yard. Outside doors should have a motion-sensored, bright, working light to illuminate visitors.

• All entryways should have a working, keyed entry lock and sturdy deadbolt lock installed into the frame of the door.

• Keep bushes and trees trimmed so that you can see into your yard and neighbors can see your house.

• Look into an alarm system. A basic system can be purchased for less than $100, plus a monthly monitoring fee.

• Keep spare keys with a trusted neighbor, not under a doormat or planter, on a ledge, or in the mailbox.

• House numbers should be clearly displayed so police and other emergency vehicles can find the house quickly.

• Set at least two light timers to turn lights on and off in a logical sequence when away from home for an extended time period.

• Make sure sliding glass doors have strong, working key locks. A dowel or a pin can be installed to prevent the door from being shoved aside or lifted off the track. Lock the sliding door at night and when leaving the house.

• Stop mail and newspaper deliveries or make arrangements for a neighbor/friend to pick them up when going away from home for a period of time.

Foundation celebrates 35 years of charitable support in DuPage On Sept. 30, 1986, The DuPage Community Foundation was officially introduced as the new charitable conduit for DuPage County, starting out with a $100,000 matching challenge grant as a donor-advised fund of The Chicago Community Trust.

Thirty-five years later, DuPage Foundation’s total charitable capital has grown to more than $185 million, of which $60 million has been distributed in cumulative grants to succeed the Foundation’s vision to raise the quality of life in DuPage County.

Within the last four years, the Foundation doubled its charitable impact, distributing $60 million in cumulative grants, compared to awarding $30 million in cumulative grants as 2017 came to a close. Since its inception in 1986, the Foundation distributed a total of 8,812 grants to 1,493 not-forprofit agencies serving the residents of DuPage County and beyond.

During the last decade, the Foundation’s total annual grant distributions have increased from $1.4 million in 2011 to more than $8.9 million today. Through the Community Needs Grant Program, special initiatives, donor-advised grants and designated grants, the Foundation is committed to supporting local not-for-profit organizations in all areas of service to help DuPage residents in need.

Montini Catholic congratulates freshmen earning academic scholarships Montini Catholic is recognizing 15 freshmen from its Class of 2025. The students are recipients of Montini Catholic’s Freshman Placement Exam Scholarships which are offered to incoming freshmen excelling on the Freshman Placement Exam (when taken at Montini Catholic). “All prospective students are encouraged to take the exam at Montini in order to be eligible for the scholarships,” said Jennifer Long Kavanagh, admissions representative. Scholarships are awarded based on national percentile ranking of the placement exam scores: Students scoring between the 95th to 99th percentiles receive a $2,500 scholarship; students scoring between the 90th to 94th percentiles receive a $1,500 scholarship; students scoring between the 85th to 89th percentiles receive a $1,000 scholarship. Kavanagh explained that all awards are renewable as long as a student meets the renewable criteria each year.
