Student engagement ultimate mission for two Montini educators Two Montini Catholic faculty/ staff members are going above and beyond when it comes to student involvement at the Lasallian college preparatory high school. Student Government Director and Montini Maniacs Moderator Alexxis Johnson and Student Activities Director Andrew Weisenburger are doing everything they can to see that students get engaged during their high school years as Broncos.

About Alexxis Johnson Teacher Alexxis Johnson is enjoying her first year leading a team of energetic Bronco Student Government members who are determined to make this year a memorable one, especially in light of last year’s series of cancellations and postponed events (due to COVID-19 regulations).

“My goal is to offer events that students are excited to participate in,” she said. “I want to get our school community back together to celebrate all of the great activities that Montini has to offer.”

She stresses that her primary responsibility as director is to be an advocate for the student leaders making sure that their voices and opinions are heard.

Johnson and her team of faculty class moderators are determined to challenge Bronco students to step up and be a part of creating a spirit filled community.

“We want to plan great events and activities to keep our students excited and engaged,” Johnson added. “They should leave here with nothing but great memories of their Bronco experiences.”

(Currently in the works is the planning of Montini’s upcoming Homecoming Week which begins Saturday, Sept. 18. This year’s theme is Sweet Home Montini.)

“It is extremely rewarding to work with our student body to collaborate on ideas for Montini,” added Johnson, who works primarily with the officers elected to Student Government during the spring of last year.

“They are all so eager to bring back some of the traditions that they were not able to participate in last year, and they have so many amazing ideas about how to raise school spirit! I am so lucky to learn from them what ‘Bronco Pride’ really is!”

moderators conduct student government meetings twice a week (Executive Board on Tuesdays and individual class meetings on Wednesdays) “All students are encouraged to attend their class meeting each Wednesday and to share their ideas for how to better the school community here at Montini,” she shared.

“We want everyone to feel like their ideas are valued. You never know who will have the next great idea!”

Student Government and Montini Maniacs go hand in hand in regards to student engagement. One group plans the events and the other goes all out in making sure all Broncos are inspired to take part. It made sense for Johnson to also take on the role of moderating the Maniacs spirit team.

The group decorated the hallways for Montini’s first football game of the season (Aug. 27) and themed their pre-game kick-off party - the Bronco Gold Rush! The spirited Bronco fans dressed the part for their first Friday Night Lights game and helped lead cheers throughout the evening.

About Andrew Weisenburger Montini’s Student Activities Director Andrew Weisenburger oversees all of the school’s non-athletic clubs and organizations. He is also one of two Deans of students at Montini Catholic.

“This year, I hope that our students can enjoy a somewhat ‘normal year,’ in that they have the opportunity to take part in many events, unlike last year,” he said. “One of the great things about Montini is that we are very receptive to new clubs and ideas and it is really a great empowering lesson for our students. They are encouraged to suggest new clubs and to find and recruit members with similar interests.”

He is in awe of the resiliency he has witnessed in Bronco students over the last year and a half, with COVID-19 restrictions regulating, canceling and postponing many events.

“I’m excited for them to have a high school experience this year that is defined by what they can do rather than what they can’t do,” he said Weisenburger acknowledges that these days many students are pulled in several different directions, with memberships to several clubs, athletics and outside jobs.

Addison Trail set to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month Addison Trail is gearing up to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month starting on Sept. 13!

National Hispanic Heritage Month takes place from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 each year. It began in 1968 and was originally observed as “Hispanic Heritage Week” under President Lyndon Johnson, but was later extended to a month during President Ronald Reagan’s term in 1988.

According to www.hispanicheritagemonth.gov, “(This month) traditionally honors the cultures and contributions of both Hispanic and Latino Americans as we celebrate

heritage rooted in all Latin American countries. (The goal is to) share history, heritage and accomplishments of Hispanic and Latino Americans of past and present.”

This is the fifth year Addison Trail will celebrate the occasion, and the school is continuing to plan events.

A Spirit Week is scheduled for Sept. 13 to 17, which will culminate with the boys soccer game on Sept.

17 (varsity will begin at 6:30 p.m. at home against Oak Park and River Forest). All community members are invited to attend the game to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.

He feels blessed to be able to work with students in this capacity and greatly enjoys witnessing them as they develop their own leadership skills over the course of their four years of high school. Weisenburger hosted a special Club Day on Wednesday, Sept. 1, educating fresh-

“Our students really take ownership and feel like they are a part of something much bigger than themselves,” he said.

Senior Michael Carver receives Montini’s ‘Bumber’s Corner Locker’ honor Tradition now in its fourth year honoring extraordinary alumnus

Montini Catholic has announced its 2021 ‘Bumber’s Corner Locker’ recipient, named after 1989 Montini graduate and football standout Brad Bumber.

This year’s honor went to senior Bronco (LB/FB) Michael Carver.

Michael received the news during the football team’s weekly dinner on Thursday evening, Sept. 2.

“Michael truly embodies the everyday character and spirit of Brad Bumber,” said Varsity Football Coach Mike Bukovsky, who selected Michael for the honor. “Like Brad was, Mike is a tough hardnosed player, and can always be counted on by his teammates. He is a year-round leader and one of the hardest workers on the team. He is a perfect choice to carry on Brad’s legacy with his everyday words and actions and positive influence on his teammates and the Bronco Football Program.”

Montini Catholic student Brad Bumber ‘89 played linebacker for the Broncos from 1985 to 1989. He passed away on Sept. 26, 2015 due to complications from his long battle with cancer. The interesting idea to honor a current football player each year with the use of this special locker was the brainchild of Brad’s teammate, Montini Catholic alumnus Brian Forde from the class of ‘89. Brian wanted to commemorate the memory of his friend.

In the summer of 2018, during the renovation of Montini’s locker rooms, Brian initiated the plan to create “Bumber’s Corner Locker.”

“It’s such an honor to have received this honor,” said Michael.

“I know it means so much to Coach Bukovsky and the Montini football program. To be selected to represent (Brad) as a player and to have my name forever associated with this award is like a dream come true!”

Michael’s parents, Kevin and Barbara Carver (from Wheaton/ members of Sacred Heart Parish in Lombard) were also thrilled upon hearing the news.

“Their faces lit up when they found out that I won the award,” Michael said. “I could tell how

to develop the spiritual, intellectual, social and physical development of students. During and after his time at Montini, Brad Bumber became a living example of the LaSallian traditions both on and off the football field, and how those traditions and values positively influence and shape students during and after high school, throughout their entire life.

Thanks to Brian Forde and his former Bronco teammates from the Class of 1989, each year, a Montini Catholic Bronco varsity football player will receive the honor to use the locker in Brad’s honor.

“Dedicating a football locker in his memory is the best way our class could think of to honor Brad’s memory,” said Forde. “The player chosen by his coaches to receive ‘Bumber’s Corner’ each year should feel extremely honored to be recognized for demonstrating similar attributes and qualities as Brad, and for the privilege to play Montini Bronco Football under the banner of his name and memory.

“Brad Bumber was the definition of a blue-collar player. He was never the fastest, strongest, or most naturally talented player on the field. Nobody outworked, out hustled or outperformed him and he never gave anything less than 100% - in the game, or at practice. “ According to Forde, Bumber genuinely loved being on the gridiron, and wanted to make every tackle on every play, but was also the first to congratulate his teammates when they made a play.

“Brad became our team captain, not only for his performance on the field, but equally because of the positive way he carried himself off the field,” Forde said. “Through his daily commitment, work ethic, consistency, and good nature in the locker room, he earned the admiration and respect of his foot-

ball teammates. He exemplified good sportsmanship, hard work, determination, and the confidence those traits naturally engender. He was a loyal teammate, and a morally-grounded friend.”

Forde also recalled that Brad would go out of his way to take freshmen players under his wing, encouraged them to work hard, and made them feel a part of the football brotherhood.

“He wanted every Bronco who wore the jersey to love the game as much as he did, and for his entire team to succeed, together,” he said.

Teammate Guy DeFeo ‘89 agrees about Brad’s extraordinary demeanor on and off the field.

“He was the ultimate teammate who didn’t need, or want, praise.

He made everyone around him better just by his example,” DeFeo said.

“Brad really took Coach (Chris) Andriano’s speeches, about good sportsmanship, to heart,” Forde recalled. “We were playing Driscoll, who we hated. I mean hated. After every play he would amble over, smile and offer a hand to help the guy to his feet, the opposing ball carrier—who he just knocked into next week! And he did it again and again, with his huge grin. I’m pretty sure the Driscoll guys all thought he was kind of crazy.“ For all of these reasons, Brad Bumber was admired and respected amongst his teammates, coaches, and classmates. Montini Catholic remained so important to him personally, as well.

One of Brad’s last wishes was to return to Montini to see one last football game and spend time with his old friends and coaches. On Friday, Sept. 18, 2015, that dream was realized.

“At the time, he was in the final stage of a long battle with cancer,” Forde recalled. “He had lost almost 90 pounds and was in excruciating pain. In typical Bumber fashion, and against all odds, he showed up!”

Sadly, Brad passed away exactly one week after that final homecoming game at the age of 45.

“His natural everyday disposition was truly inspired by the Gospel’s golden rule, the traditions of the Catholic Church, and the spiritual teachings of St. John Baptist de La Salle,” said Forde. “In the truest sense possible, Brad lived the principles instilled in us each day while at Montini.”

August 5, 2021 To the Village of Bensenville, I have an offer that I believe the Village of Bensenville would be interested in pursuing. I would like to offer to pay for two of the Village planners to take two courses on the basics of city planning to help advance their educational development in the field of zoning and planning.

It became clear to me that this would be something that the Village and Village planners would be interested in because good planning would not permit the construction of a car wash next to apartment homes when you have 300,000 square feet of land available to put it elsewhere. I believe some classes on the basics would make it apparent that one should not place a car wash so intrusively close into the lives of working people. Grand Subaru wants to put their car wash operation away from their sales operation and the village allowed them to put it 40 feet away from our tenant’s, including children’s, bedrooms. Permitting commercial construction close to a residential environment is disruptive and unsuitable planning.

Viewpoint Continuing Trump fervor explained

By Jim Nowlan and Allen Andersen In central Illinois, we live in Trump country.

Seven of 10 voters in our respective central Illinois counties voted for Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election. We are not Trump fans, yet many of our friends are.

Trump will go away; his base won’t, so what gives with our friends?

Based on chats and overheard conversations over the past year at our Legion post, country club, pubs, coffee shops and outdoor cookouts, we sum up here the continuing Trump loyalties as we have heard them, but in our words.

Our Trump friends range from working stiffs to successful entrepreneurs living in once-proud, now hollowed out cities like Peoria and Decatur. As both of us are retired, our sample is skewed toward the mature set, yet not wholly so.

Our overall “finding” is that of a profound disenchantment with America’s political, business, academic and social policy leadership, across both political parties—our elites, you might say.

The roots of disenchantment go back as far as the Vietnam War, which coincides roughly with the beginnings of American Decline, certainly as perceived by older Trump fans.

For example, our political leaders have taken us into long, drawn-out wars, of immeasurable cost in men and treasure—only to keep losing them and pulling out with our tails CLUES ACROSS 1. More recently, we have been educating China’s future tech wizards on our best engineering and science campuses, shoveling invaluable technological know-how into the laps of our primary competitor.

In addition to saving our allies’ bacon in the Big War, we continue to spend jillions protecting Europeans from harm. In return, Europeans look down their noses at us with barely concealed contempt. At home, Trump fans yearn for the good old days of two-parent families, with some respect and discipline in the home. Yet, our social policy experts push Congress to adopt scores of costly social programs that appear to diss traditional family life, instead encouraging dependence on government handouts, rather than building the resilience needed in the home.

All the while, the political and economic classes reap the benefits.

Washington is seen as a widening cesspool of big-paying jobs for politicians, lawyers, lobbyists and staffers. Some of the staffers go on to Wall Street, to assist in knowingly pushing such things as toxic mortgages onto unsuspecting investors and ill-suited homeowners—never to pay a price for their criminality or for

Worse, the nouveaux elites, from the Clintons to the Obamas, appear to feel good about the jobs they think they have done, seemingly oblivious to the national decline that angers the Trump base.

To add insult to injury, a clueless Hillary Clinton describes the Trumpers as “deplorables,” which is like arousing caged lions with red meat.

So, “Make America Great Again” continues as the perfect rallying cry against the failures of the American power structure, say Trump fans.

The Trump base, at least those around us here in struggling central Illinois, can overlook the personality flaws of Trump because he talks a blunt, unvarnished, bar-room language in stark contrast to the hyper-political correctness that smothers direct conversations about America’s problems.

We think his fans cling to Trump because they fear when he goes, our elite will again go unchallenged, and American decline will continue.

We are not Trump fans, yet in reflecting on what we hear, we think the Trump base makes an arguable case that we deserve better than we’ve been getting.

Montini Peer Tutors welcome the opportunity to help others Montini Catholic recently announced its National Honor Society (NHS) Peer Tutors for the 2021-22 school year. Each year this group of dedicated leaders volunteer to make themselves available to help their peers, who are struggling with certain courses, work toward self-responsibility and self-direction with their school work.

“Students and tutors are partnered with one another and schedule times to work together either before or after school based upon their respective schedules,” explained Mr. Mike Dailey, co-moderator of Montini’s National Honor Society this year.

“Our designated NHS tutoring time is every Thursday after school in our Learning Resource Center. We also try to schedule students together who have the same study hall period for convenience.”

“If a student needs a tutor for multiple subjects, they’ll be provided with NHS members who excel in those subjects,” explained Emily Labno who initially applied to be a tutor due to her enjoyment of helping others. “It’s something that makes me feel helpful and part of something bigger than just myself. Knowing that you’ve helped someone is one of the most refreshing and heart warming feelings.”

“I wanted to be a Peer Tutor because I genuinely enjoy helping others when they are struggling,” said Audrey Kekstadt. “I value education and having the opportunity to teach friends and classmates is fulfilling to me. I also believe that if I can explain a certain concept or idea to someone else, then I will be able to grasp that subject better than before.

of aggravated battery/discharge of a firearm (Class X felony) and one count of attempt armed robbery/discharged firearm (Class 1 felony).

On Aug. 29 at approximately 2:11 p.m., Naperville police officers responded to a call of shots fired in a parking lot located on Amersale Drive.

Upon their arrival, officers located two .40 caliber shell casings and more than $100 cash in the parking lot.

While at the scene, the officers were notified that the Aurora Police Department had located a vehicle with two gunshot victims inside the vehicle at McCoy Drive and Vaughn Road. One victim had been shot in the left leg

and the other victim, later identified as Coreon Davis, had been shot in the head and his left hand. Both individuals were transported to a local hospital for medical attention. Davis was later transported to Loyola Hospital where he subsequently died.

It is alleged that Davis and the second individual went to the parking lot on Amersale to sell a gun to Chatman-Jones. It is alleged that upon their arrival at the parking lot, a man, later identified as Chatman-Jones exited a vehicle and approached their vehicle.

It is further alleged that when Chatman-Jones gave Davis money for the gun, Davis, who remained in the ve-

hicle, told Chatman-Jones that he was “short” on the amount of money the two had agree upon to complete the transaction.

It is alleged that a struggle between Davis and Chatman-Jones began and that at this time, Chapman-Jones discharged a weapon, striking the two occupants of the vehicle. It is further alleged that both the victims’ car and Chatman-Jones and Gray fled the scene at this time. Following an investigation into the murder led by the Naperville Police Department, Chatman-Jones and Gray were taken into custody without incident the following day from an Aurora apartment com-

Bond set for two accused in Naperville murder DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Naperville Interim Chief of Police Jason Arres have announced that bond has been set for two individuals charged with first-degree murder following an altercation in a Naperville parking lot.

Robert Chatman-Jones, 20, of Bellwood, and Desire Gray, 19, of Aurora, each appeared at a bond hearing where Judge Ann Celine O’Hallaren Walsh set bond at $4 million with 10 percent to apply for Chatman-Jones and $1.5 million with 10 percent to apply for Gray.

Both have been charged with one count of first-degree murder, one count

September is Suicide Prevention Month

Every year, during National Suicide Prevention Month, individuals and organizations come together to highlight the problem of suicide and advocate its prevention.

The DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) will be providing suicide prevention training for all staff and encourages residents to raise awareness in their communities—it could save a person’s life.

Suicide is a serious public health problem that can have lasting harmful effects on individuals, families, and communities.

According to the Centers for Disease Control

and Prevention (CDC), suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States.

From 1999 to 2019, suicide rates increased 33 percent nationally and 34 percent locally in DuPage County. In 2019, suicide was responsible for more than 47,500 deaths across the country and 90 deaths in DuPage County.

Sadly, deaths by suicide increased an additional four percent in 2020 for a total of 94 deaths among DuPage County residents.

However, suicide is preventable, and everyone has a role to play in ecognizing warning signs and risk factors for suicide. In recognition of

this, the DCHD has adopted the Zero Suicide philosophy.

This framework has allowed DCHD to improve identification of individuals at-risk for suicide and provide better care to individuals experiencing suicidality.

All employees of the DCHD will receive training in line with these objectives to help support this important initiative.

For anyone experiencing difficult or suicidal thoughts, or anyone who knows someone who is, there are various resources available, including:

• National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. The Lifeline is available 24/7 at 1-800-273-8255 for free and confidential support for people in distress, prevention and crisis resources for you or your loved ones.

• Crisis Text Line—The Crisis Text Line is available 24/7 for free crisis support by text message. Anyone in a crisis can connect with a Crisis Counselor by texting “Reach” to 741741.

• Call4Calm—A free text line is available if for anyone seeking emotional support. Text TALK to 552020 for English or HABLAR for Spanish, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

COVID-19 transmission level remains ‘High’ in DuPage County DuPage County continues to see increased COVID-19 cases and individuals requiring hospitalization causing the county to remain at the highest level of community transmission, “High”, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) reminds residents that vaccines continue to provide the highest level of protection against COVID-19, including the Delta variant, and help prevent severe illness, hospitalization, and death.

According to the latest CDC COVID-19 vaccination data, 87 percent of eligible residents 12 years and older in DuPage County have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose, and 70 percent are fully vaccinated.

Of residents 65 years and older, 99.9 percent have received at least one

COVID-19 vaccine dose, and 84 percent are fully vaccinated.

However, among 12 to 17-year-olds in DuPage County, 77 percent have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose, and only 58 percent are fully vaccinated.

To help reduce spread in schools and the community, all unvaccinated persons aged 12 years and older are urged to get vaccinated against COVID-19 as soon as possible.

Currently, individuals with moderately to severely compromised immune systems are recommended to receive a third dose of a mRNA COVID-19 vaccine. Individuals who believe they are eligible for a third vaccine dose should talk to their healthcare provider.

Third-dose vaccinations are available through local pharmacies or healthcare providers and can be giv-

en 28 days after receiving the second dose.

The DCHD is actively monitoring the situation regarding COVID-19 boosters for fully vaccinated people.

Although booster shots are expected to begin this fall, the FDA must first authorize a third dose of the Pfizer and Moderna mRNA vaccines. The CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) also must issue booster dose recommendations based on the evidence presented. As more information becomes available in the coming weeks, DCHD will share additional updates.

Robert Jans is a longtime supporter of military education and the current

chairman of the Defense Orientation Conference Association (DOCA), a nationwide nonprofit that educates civic and business leaders on defense, foreign policy and national security issues. Over the years, as Jans visited military installations for his work with DOCA, he frequently heard about the need for more enlistees with STEM backgrounds and wanted to do something to better connect talented students with potential careers in the military.

NAMI DuPage will present its 2nd annual Octoberfest at the DuPage County Fairgrounds in Wheaton on the following dates: Friday, Oct. 1 from 6-11 p.m.; Saturday, Oct. 2 from 8 a.m. - 11 p.m. (carnival opens at 12 noon); and Sunday, Oct. 3 from 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. (carnival opens at 12 noon).

This year’s event will include carnival rides and kids’ activities, two car shows (Saturday and Sunday), a pancake breakfast (Saturday), our Un-

corked and Uncapped wine and beer tasting (Saturday from 4 – 7 p.m.), live music, and much more.

New telehealth legislation co-sponsored

by Cullerton signed into law State Sen. Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) was a co-sponsor in the Senate of House Bill 3308 legislation expanding telehealth services in Illinois and recently signed into law.

“From initial consultations with a specialty doctor to mental health check-ins with a therapist, the use of telehealth throughout this pandemic has provided so many more opportunities for people to access health care,” Cullerton said. “I am so glad to see this legislation signed today, because without it, so many people would lose their ease of access to health care.”

Telehealth services were largely used during the COVID-19 pandemic due to emergency federal and state orders. This legislation will maintain and expand telehealth services by requiring insurance companies to utilize similar billing processes for both in-person and telehealth services.

During the pandemic, telehealth services reduced the number of missed appointments while increasing care plan adherence and improving chronic disease management. For those who are homebound or find it difficult to leave the house, telehealth services allow them to check in with their doctors without the stress of leaving their home. Additionally, telehealth services give people easier access to counseling for mental health.

The law is effective immediately.

On Sunday, Sept. 5, Villa Park Village President Nick Cuzzone and his daughter, Alexandra, took part in the Elmhurst Walkin Assistance Network’s ‘Cue for a Cause, an annual barbecue competition and family festival to benefit the organization. This year’s ‘Cue for a Cause also included a baking contest. Alexandra helped out Elmhurst resident Dan Gibbons, who went on to take first place for best ribs.

In addition, Alexandra won the pie-baking competition.
