Early Childhood Collaborative plans family fair Topic: Keeping kids safe on social media, Internet

Addison families are invited to attend the Addison Early Childhood Collaborative’s (AECC) free Fall Family Fair on Thursday, Sept. 21 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Indian Trail

Junior High, 222 N. Kennedy Drive.

The theme of the fair is “Social Media and Internet Safety” and it will focus on how the internet has changed the way that children interact with the

world. Parent talks in both English and Spanish will be offered from 6-7 p.m. on how to keep children safe on social media and the internet.

Community organizations will be

providing information and access to a variety of services for families including family health and nutrition; child, family and relationship support; car seat checks and more. Refreshments,

children’s activities, and raffles will also be available to make this event fun for the entire family.

Montini Catholic welcomes the Class of 2021 at Quest orientation event tomed to the school before their first day of classes on August 16. Montini’s student ambassadors, along with Campus Minister Mike Blanchette, and Activities Director Jill Smith, were on hand to guide the new students through their exciting day. The student volunteers also helped out by sharing their own experiences as freshmen and providing advice and encouragement.

The program concluded with a prayer session with each attendee re-

ceiving a special cross to remember his/her day. Before leaving, students lined up to sign a list of goals they planned to accomplish during their four years as Montini Broncos. The

list and signatures will be framed and displayed at the school. “For many freshmen entering into their first year of high school, the experience can be very stressful and overwhelming,”

said Montini’s Admissions Director, Kim Richmond. “Montini’s Quest event is designed to make this experience as fun and memorable as it can be.”

Students at Indian Trail Junior High are participating in coding classes this year as part of the school’s new exploratory class rotation. In an effort to expand students’ exposure to more technical studies, the curriculum was developed and classrooms were reconfigured over the summer to give students the opportunity to learn more about computer coding.

Last week, students did some dancing in order to understand the concept of sequence and the importance of performing steps in a prescribed order. Other students were

introduced to concepts important in coding like ‘algorithm’ and ‘sequence’ through a classroom word wall. Down the hall, Mr. Kelly’s coding class was participating in a computer-based activity.

Exploratory classes — including art, coding/STEM, computer, health, family and consumer science, general music, geometry workshop and writing explorations -- are scheduled for students who are not enrolled in performing arts or foreign language classes. Students rotate to a new exploratory class each quarter (nineweek sessions).

Police announce roadside safety checkpoint The Addison Police Department will conduct a Roadside Safety Checkpoint from 9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 15 until 1 a.m. on Saturday Sept. 16, on US Route 20 (Lake Street) at Ninth Avenue.

Vehicles traveling eastbound on US Route 20 on will be stopped in a pre-established, systematic fashion for a brief inspection of safety and driver violations. Police will check vehicle registrations, driver’s licenses, proof of insurance, and driver

sobriety in addition to vehicle safety violations.

The purpose of conducting the Roadside Safety Checkpoint is to enhance the safety of the motoring public in the Village of Addison. A statewide coordinated effort to reduce drinking and driving is underway and the Addison Police Department is a partner in this venture.

Villa Park Sept. 2 • Luke D. Alesia, 21, of Lombard, was charged with disorderly conduct and criminal damage to property, and Ryan J. Walega, 20, of Lombard, was charged with unlawful possession of a fraudulent driver’s license at the Great Western Trail/Euclid at around 1:54 a.m.

• Nicola A. Lappo, 23, of Elmhurst, was issued a citation for unlawful possession of cannabis near

Route 83 and North at around 4:10 p.m.

• Christian Martinez, 22, of Addison, was charged with consumption of alcohol on public property near Vermont and Iowa at around 5:30 p.m.

• Jose Munoz, 18, of Glendale Heights, was charged with unlawful possession of cannabis, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and violation of park hours at Rotary Park at around 12:05 a.m.

Aug. 8-Sept. 2 Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 400 block of E. Roosevelt. Police said that between 9 a.m. Aug. 8 and 4 p.m. Sept. 2, an unknown suspect stole the backpack camera and radio/head unit from a vehicle parked on the property.

March 1-Sept. 1 Retail theft was reported in the 200 block of W. Roosevelt. Police said that between the above dates, an unknown suspect stole $600 worth of high-hat cymbals.

VFW to host veteran benefits event

On Saturday, Sept. 23, all veterans and their friends and families are invited to the Villa Park VFW from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. for the for the 7th Annual Veteran Benefits Event, sponsored by Welcome Home All Veterans (WHAV). Admission is FREE and everyone is invited to attend.

Addison Sept. 7 • Police said Eddie R. Boens, 19, of Joliet, had an original warrant out of the Addison Police Department for armed robbery. An Addison police officer responded to the Will County Sheriff’s Department to transfer Boens to Addison, according to police.

• Keisha M. Hoye, 26, of Chicago, was charged with retail theft at a store in the 1000 block of N. Rohlwing, at 12:17 a.m.

Conroy appointed to Advisory Council on mental health State Rep. Deb Conroy, D-Villa Park, has been appointed to serve on the newly formed Advisory Council on Early Identification and Treatment of Mental Health Conditions.

This committee was created through legislation passed by Conroy in August.

“I am honored to have been appointed to serve on the new Advisory Council on Early Identification and Treatment of Mental Health Conditions,” said Conroy, who chairs the House Mental Health Committee.

“Identifying and starting treatment as soon as possible is the key to leading a full life for all people struggling with mental health issues. The creation of this council is one step of many Illinois must take in order to ensure that our children and young

adults with mental illnesses have access to the best care so that they can lead happy and productive lives.”

This advisory council is responsible for reviewing evidence based practices and initiatives on regular screenings and identification of mental health conditions in young people. Members of the committee, who will serve without compensation or reimbursement, will also be responsible for identifying barriers to access of services such as insurance coverage issues and lack of adequate resources. The General Assembly voted unanimously to create this committee.

“The creation of this committee signifies how seriously we are going to address mental health issues here in Illinois,” said Conroy. “Mental

health issues cross party lines and face every community regardless of geography or economic standing.

Now more than ever, we need to get

rid of the antiquated idea that we can’t talk about it. Mental health is about our brains and brain health. If a child was diabetic, we would make

sure that child received the insulin they needed. This council will bring us closer to real solutions to mental health issues.”

Forest Preserve District seeks public feedback Plans community meetings to get input on five-year master plan

The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County invites residents to contribute to a new five-year development plan by sharing their thoughts on natural areas and educational and recreational programs at the county’s 62 forest preserves at six upcoming community meetings.

The meeting closest to readers of the Independent will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 26 from 7 – 8:30 p.m.

Elmhurst Hospital, in partnership with the Elmhurst Police and Fire Departments, held an Active Threat Education/Functional Exercise on the morning of Wednesday, Aug. 30.

The drill was a precursor to a FullScale Active Threat Drill that will take place in the fall, which will also involve the Elmhurst Police and Fire Departments.

Staff were asked to participate in the exercise to give each employee the opportunity to learn how to use “RUN, HIDE, FIGHT” in their own area to be better prepared and to keep themselves and their patients safe.

An “active threat” refers to a person or persons coming into the hospital unauthorized with the intent of harming people, such as an armed shooter. In this particular case, the “drill” was a disgruntled employee attempting to cause harm in the Human Resources department.

Once the drill was announced, all the employees gathered in “huddles,” that is, met together at the supervisor’s workstation to determine the next course of action.

Elmhurst Police Sgt. Matt Himpelmann was on hand to explain the procedure in assisting during an active threat, pointing out the one of the biggest challenges is actually

getting the police to the hospital.

“We’re in the center of town and you’re in the south part of the City, so right off the bat, we’re behind,” he said. “Sometimes the event is over before we arrive.

“Otherwise, we will have officers pour in from every possible entrance as fast as possible. At that point, the entire hospital is considered a crime scene. Our plan is to give you another patient [meaning the criminal].”

He pointed out there were 32 doorways to the hospital, half of which are accessible to the public.

What staff are trained to do Employees were advised to plan ahead and find a safe place in advance of any threat where they can be barricaded in, if necessary. Anyone who can should bring along a cell phone to maintain communication.

The rule to follow is: RUN, HIDE, FIGHT. If confronted by an offender, Himpelmann advised that the worker should do anything possible to knock the offender to the ground. Workers should also consider in advance what they could grab to break glass to potentially use to fend off a suspect. A heavy object could also be used to strike the person.

“If the suspect has a gun and you are able to strike that person to the ground, don’t pick up the gun, leave it there,” Himpelmann said. “Otherwise, when police arrive, they could mistake you for the shooter.”

type of situation, the people who get out of the building are most likely to survive, followed by those who are barricaded inside a closet or room.

“The worst thing you can do is hide under a desk and hope they won’t see you,” Himpelmann said. “You’re just waiting to get shot.”

It was explained that the patients were more or less on their own, but that staff needed to keep themselves safe in order to continue to serve the

patients.

“If something happens to one of us, then who will help the patients?”

Lumpkin said. “We’ve been taught to take care of ourselves first, then tend to the patients when we can. But that can be the hardest part because we are so used to NOT leaving the patients. In this case, we have to.”

Police said most of the time, active shooters coming into a hospital are not looking to harm the patients, they’re usually wanting something from the staff or the hospital itself.

Dr. Michelle Meziere, an ER physician and associate medical director of emergency medicine for Elmhurst Hospital, spoke with the Independent following the drill.

She added that many times if there was an incident at a hospital, it was someone looking for drugs.

ATHS career fair offers guidance to students On Wednesday, Sept. 6, Addison Trail hosted the school’s annual Student Activity Fair. The event allows students to learn more about the activities and clubs offered at Addison Trail, and 36 groups participated this year.

“The Activity Fair is an opportunity for students to see all Addison Trail has to offer with regard to student clubs,” said Principal Michael Bolden. “We know student success is directly related to their involvement in school beyond the classroom, and this event allows students to find a club that interests them to become more engaged.”

More than 65 percent of the students at Addison Trail participate in activities, athletic programs and clubs. If students cannot find a club in which they are interested, they have the opportunity to start a new club.

Lincoln 5th graders tie-dye shirts for school spirit The fifth grade students at Lincoln School took advantage of a beautiful September morning to work on project that would help show their school spirit. The students took turns dipping their rubberbanded white t-shirts into buckets of yellow and blue dye in order to make tie-dyed shirts in Lincoln’s school colors.

After dipping the shirts into the paint, the students lined up the freshly dyed shirt ‘balls’ on the grass to air dry. Each class made a line and students were told to remember their shirt’s position in the line so that everyone would end up with their own t-shirt creation.

Addison Trail football team loses to Glenbard West Blazers girls volleyball team takes second at Willowbrook

The Addison Trail football team dropped to 2-1 overall after a 35-10 loss at home to Glenbard West in West Suburban Conference crossover action.

Glenbard West led 7-0 after the first quarter. The game was tied 7-7 at halftime and Glenbard West led 14-10 after three quarters before blowing the game open with three touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

Nick D’Ambrose ran 32 times for 224 yards to lead the way for the Blazers. He averaged 7.0 yards per

carry and had a long run of 55 yards.

Quarterback Nick Daudelin completed 13 passes for 93 yards and a touchdown. Pablo Mosely caught five passes for 32 yards and a touchdown. D’Ambrose had three catches for 24 yards and Dennis Ionikov had three catches for 20 yards. Jacob Grygo had one catch for 11 yards and AJ Parnell had one catch for six yards.

Grygo hit a 27-yard field goal, while Angelo Pahopos had a fumble recovery.

Addison Trail held a 32:31-15:29 time of possession advantage in the

game.

The Blazers (2-1) return to action Friday in Villa Park for the annual District 88 game against Willowbrook.

Addison Trail girls volleyball Through late last week, the Addison Trail girls volleyball team was 6-8 overall and 0-1 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division action.

The Blazers recently took second in the Willowbrook invitational, losing to Metea Valley in the championship.

Nina Muell had 21 kills in the team’s recent match against Maine

“Our girls have proven to be resilient with numerous lineup changes with girls playing different positions and responding to injuries,” said Addison Trail coach Dan Styler. “We are certain we will be competing at a higher level during the second half of our season if we stay healthy.”

Sophomore Jessica D’Ambrose was lauded for her recent play. “Jessica has been challenged to be our most versatile player,” said Styler.

“She has been challenged to transition between three different positions during the first month of the season.

She is a consistent leader in our lineup.”

Sophomore Amy Reyes was recently promoted from the sophomore team to the varsity. “She assumed the role of setter on the varsity team and played a significant role in leading our team to a season-high 41 kills in our match against Maine East,” Styler pointed out. “She will continue to grow and thrive. She has a very bright future in our program.”

Addison Trail played Willowbrook earlier this week in a battle of District 88 schools. It was Addison Trail’s annual Go Pink match.

The Willowbrook football team opened West Suburban Conference Gold Division action on the right foot with a 20-13 victory on the road against defending conference champion Leyden.

The win pushes the Warriors to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in WSC Gold play.

Senior running back Jack Jessen led Willowbrook with 35 carries for 222 yards (6.3 yards per carry). He scored three rushing touchdowns.

Quarterback John Taylor ran five times for 68 yards and completed four passes for 43 yards.

Willowbrook returns to action Friday with the annual District 88 game against Addison Trail in Villa Park.

Willowbrook girls volleyball The Willowbrook girls volleyball team took seventh place at its own Willowbrook Invitational.

The Warriors lost 25-13, 25-18 to West Chicago and defeated Walther Christian 25-14, 25-15 before losing to Metea Valley 25-8, 25-10 on the first day of competition.

On the second day, Coal City defeated Willowbrook 25-18, 25-22 and Willowbrook defeated Walther Christian 25-15, 25-23.

Juniors Gavin Hitzeman and Taylor Sarovich, along with sophomores Jordan Rust, Joey Zopel and freshman Andrew Rugg played for Willowbrook. Hinsdale South won the tournament with a 10-under score.

At the Fenton Bison Invitational at the par-70 White Pines East Course in Bensenville, the Warriors were 21st. Senior Buddy Martens shot 83.

Fenton football team defeats Guerin Prep Barriga scores four goals in Bison boys soccer win

The Fenton football team snapped a season-opening two-game losing streak with a 43-6 Metro Suburban Conference crossover win against Guerin Prep at home.

Fenton jumped out to a 36-0 lead after the first quarter and racked up its 43 points by halftime. Guerin Prep scored its only points in the second quarter.

Fenton (1-2) concludes its MSC crossover games Saturday at 1 p.m. with a contest against Walther Christian in Melrose Park ahead of opening conference play in Glen Ellyn on Sept. 22 against Glenbard South.

current strengths are its midfield play and finishing opportunities.

Ruiz said the team has been bolstered by the scoring punch of Barriga and Jaramillo. “Angel and Ivan are linking up top and scoring goals,” he said. “This 1-2 punch is hard to stop once they get going.”

Ruiz also has been impressed with the play of midfielder Johnathan Chavez, sophomore defender Sebastian Palacios, junior goalie Carlos Popoca and midfielder Abraham Sanchez.

“Johnathan helps the team with his fierce defensive work, breaking

up plays and distributing balls to our forwards,” explained Ruiz. “Sebastian’s leadership and command of the back has made our defenders better in getting in rhythm. Carlos has gotten more confident in the net and Abraham is doing well with his ball distribution out of the midfield.”

State Rep. Deb Conroy (D-Villa Park) supported bipartisan legislation that increases the number of hours an elected official must work to become eligible for a pension through the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF).

“This bill is one step of many that our state needs to take in order ensure that our local governments are doing their part to ease the burden of rising property taxes,” Conroy said.

“Residents should not be on the hook for a part time elected official’s pension.”

Conroy supported House Bill 3122 which will increase the required amount of hours for local elected officials to become pension-eligible from 600 hours of work per year to 1000 hours. This bill was created in an effort to ease the rising costs of the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF), which is paid for by both state and local property taxes.

This bill passed the general assembly unanimously.

DIY, laughter and olive oil

Do-it-youselfers will attest to two universal truths: projects beget projects and the outcomes are often funny if you are willing to laugh at yourself or others. Both phenomena happen to me all the time. This week at our house it involved stickers.

My husband and I recently updated our bathroom by framing the mirror. With the mirror framed and looking lovely, it became apparent (to me) that our soap dispenser was lacking. Or better put, we were lacking a soap dispenser. We were simply using the bottle the soap came in when purchased from the store. Next to the newly framed mirror it looked practically plastic (because it was). We were in need of an upgrade.

I found a suitable plain white ceramic dispenser and put it in the bathroom next to the sink. It was an improvement, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was missing. And then it hit me: what we needed was a label.

I didn’t trust my artistic prowess enough to paint a label on the ceramic. Instead I opted for stickers.

I got some nice black letters and placed four of them on the dispenser to spell SOAP. It was perfect. So perfect that I got two more dispensers – one for the other bathroom and one for the kitchen – and labeled them with SOAP stickers as well.

ects and for most DIYers the story would end here. But I am not only a DIYer; I am a penny-pincher. And in this case, I had extra, unused stickers. I looked around the kitchen for something else to label.

Next to the sink, I have a spray bottle filled with rubbing alcohol to clean the stainless steel and other surfaces needing disinfecting.

There wasn’t enough space to spell out rubbing or alcohol so I took three letters – A, L and C – and placed them on the bottle. I wasn’t done yet.

There was a similar spray bottle on the stovetop that held olive oil – of the extra virgin variety. Again, space was an issue, so I went with the well-known (or so I thought) abbreviation: EVOO. (Extra virgin olive oil, for those who have never heard of Rachel Ray.) I still had some stickers left, but it was time to make supper so I put my projects on hold. And here’s where the funny part comes in.

As we were prepping for our meal, my husband (who is a Rachel

Ray fan) reached for the olive oil and reacted with a start.

“What the heck is ee-vu?” he asked (He pronounced EVOO as though it rhymed with emu.) Then he repeated his question, sort of.

“Ee-vu? That’s not even a word.

I’ve never heard of ee-vu. Is this some sort of joke?”

By this time, I couldn’t answer him because I was laughing my eevu off.

Sensing an opportunity to laugh at a parent, the kids gathered nearby. None of them let my husband in on the joke. God bless the children.

My husband remained incredulous. “Ee-vu? Are you messing with me? Ee-vu, really?”

Each time he said the “word” we all burst out in laughter. The kitchen was a very happy place, unless you were my husband.

Finally one of the kids took pity and let him in on the secret. We all got a good laugh out of that one and my husband learned a new vocabulary word.

All in all it was a good day. Especially for a DIYer. And I’m not done yet. I still have a few stickers left.

I just have to figure out what I can spell and where I can put them.
