ACA receives grants to fund programs for students

The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) has awarded the Addison Center for the Arts $10,000 in the discipline of “Arts Engagement in American Communities” including Reaching Out Through the Arts, a multi-faceted arts education program for elementary and middle school students for 2017-18. In 20142015, the ACA also received $10,000 for the same grant proposal.

Three projects will be fulfilled for this grant: • Arts Alive: A n After School Program is an ongoing program for students in grades 6-8 at Indian Trail Junior High School bringing in professional artists in the disciplines of music, dance, theater, creative writing and visual arts during the hours from 3 to 5 pm during several workshops in a safe environment. (three workshop sessions) beginning in September, 2017.

• Lyric Opera in the Neighborhoods which will include two performances by the Lyric Opera of Chicago on October 26, ,2017 with “Scorpions Sting”. Approximately 1,800 students in grades 4-6 will be afforded this opportunity taking place in the auditorium of Addison Trail High School.

• Salt Creek Ballet Company will perform the ballet “Carnival of the Animals” by Saint-Saens in April, 2018. Two performances will take place in the auditorium of ATHS for students in grades 2-5.

Other grants • Another grant was received from the Illinois Arts Council Agency (IACA) for $1,200 which will cover general expenses and marketing. ACA programs are partially supported by the IACA through federal funding by the National Endowment for the Arts.

• The JCS Fund from the DuPage Foundation awarded ACA a grant for $3,700 for the “Arts Alive: An After School Program” which has been given grants from them yearly since 2012.

Addison Trail, Willowbrook host District 88 Foundation Nights On Aug. 18, the fields at Addison Trail and Willowbrook were filled with Blazer and Warrior Pride, as more than 3,000 District 88 students, parents/ guardians and community members came together to celebrate the beginning of the 2017-18 school year with the 2nd annual Blue and White/Silver and Blue Community Nights.

The events featured a showcase of the schools’ athletic teams and extracurricular activities. During the evening, Addison Trail had a soccer scrimmage and a football scrimmage; performances by the Marching Band, Color Guard, Orchesis Team, Cheerleading Team and Blazettes; and introductions of the fall sports teams.

Willowbrook had a soccer scrimmage and a football scrimmage; performances by the Marching Band, Color Guard, Cheerleading Team and Poms Team; and introductions of the fall sports teams. The Villa Park Youth Warrior Football and Cheerleading teams also were announced to the crowd.

The community nights were sponsored by the District 88 Foundation, which raises funds to benefit Addison Trail and Willowbrook students. The District 88 Foundation is a member of the Partnership for Inspired Education (PIE) Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that serves public school students in District 88, Addison School District 4, School District 45 and Salt Creek School District 48. Gov. Rauner vetoes Democrats’ $15-an-hour minimum wage hike votes.

In his veto message, Rauner cited a recent study by the University of Washington that concluded an increase of Seattle’s minimum wage to $13 an hour led to significant job cuts and hour reductions for workers.

“The most thorough research to date, published earlier this year by researchers at the University of Washington, found that for every 10 percent increase in the hourly earnings of lowwage workers, there was a 30 percent reduction in employers providing those jobs,” the governor said. “This research implies that Senate Bill 81 will result in a net reduction of earnings for low-wage Illinoisans in excess of $1,500 per year.”

Democrats criticized Rauner’s veto.

“Governor Rauner’s veto doubles down on his stance against some of our most vulnerable communities,” State Rep. Kimberly Lightford (D-Maywood) the sponsor of the increase, said in a statement. “There is no reason why a single parent working full-time should qualify for food stamps and Medicaid. Our workers deserve financial independence and the empowerment that comes from being able to provide for a family.”

Others applauded the governor’s action.

“Illinois retailers applaud Governor Rauner for standing up for Main Street businesses by vetoing SB 81, legislation that would have forced

employers to reduce hours and eliminate jobs,” a statement from the Illinois Retail Merchants Association says. “The state’s minimum wage is already the highest in the Midwest and if this measure had become law it would have put Illinois retailers at a competitive disadvantage compared to neighboring states.”

Downstate businesses, where the cost of living is substantially lower than in Chicago, were worried that such an increase would devastate southern Illinois.

“You’d have to turn around, and to stay in budget, you’re going to have to lay people off,” George Sheffer, owner Murdale Tru-Value in Carbondale, told Illinois News Network earlier this summer. “The median wage in many downstate Illinois communities is less than $15 an hour. In Carbondale, it’s less than $14.”

Included in the bill is a tax rebate for businesses with 50 or fewer employees, but that break ends in 2025.

A report released earlier this summer says a statewide pay hike might

cost an already lagging state what little jobs they planned to create.

“There will be 382,200 fewer jobs than there would be otherwise without a minimum wage increase,” Ben Gitis, director of Labor Market Policy with the American Action Forum, said last month. “That wipes out, essentially, all projected job growth Illinois is planned to have over the next decade.”

Gitis said the tax rebate offered in the bill also doesn’t go far enough to protect small businesses from the economic hit to their bottom lines.

ILLINOIS NEWS NETWORK Gov. Bruce Rauner on Friday, Aug. 25, vetoed Democrat-approved legislation that eventually would increase Illinois’ minimum wage to $15 an hour.

The legislation was opposed by business groups across the state who said it would lead to layoffs and fewer work hours for those who can afford such cuts the least.

“Helping low-income families and individuals get out of poverty is a top priority, and I share the passion of many members of the legislature for improving the well-being of those struggling to make ends meet,” Rauner said in his veto message. “However, mainstream economic theory and mainstream economic evidence strongly suggest that an increase in the minimum wage of this magnitude will hurt the very individuals it seeks to help.”

Illinois’ minimum wage currently is $8.25 an hour. Under the legislation passed in May on party line votes, the minimum wage would rise to $9 an hour next year and include several step increases until it hits $15 an hour after that.

An override of Rauner’s veto requires two-thirds majority votes in both chambers. Neither the House nor the Senate would have enough votes for a successful override unless a handful of lawmakers who initially opposed the measure change their

Little Italy Fest West came to Addison over the weekend of Aug. 24-27 and while there, Emily, 14, and Benny, 11, had some fun with Julius Caesar. The event included live musical entertainment, food, booths, games, and much more.

The Addison Center for the Arts (ACA) concluded another Free Concerts in the Park series with a line-up of music of all genres for audiences young and old.

They were held on Tuesday evenings in the Gazebo on the Addison Village Grounds over the summer of 2017.

The weather was beautiful, thus, no concert had to be held indoors in the Rotunda due to rain.

Thank you to all the bands that performed: Lake Effect, Reunion Jazz Orchestra, Melodeers, Limited Edition Big Band, and Transformation.

The ACA is especially grateful that the Limited Edition Big Band has performed in concert in Addison for the past 29 years under the direction of Dick Gulbrandsen.

A charter member of the ACA, the band’s repertoire includes music by Count Basie, Stan Kenton, Maynard Ferguson, as well as many contemporary arrangers.

Almost every member of the Limited Edition Big Band holds a BA and/or Master’s degree in music from top schools such as Northwestern University, DePaul University, NIU, Loyola, Michigan State and Roosevelt University.

The ACA is already looking forward to another season next year.

The Indian Trail Junior High students who developed the “Write Idea” lamp were recognized at Addison’s Village Board meeting that was held on Monday, Aug. 21. School District 4 Superintendent John Langton spoke about the Indian Trail summer school program, the Innovations Alive Challenge (IAC), in which 28 incoming 8th graders participated during June and July.

Langton shared that the program began with a conversation that Addison Mayor Rich Veenstra had about a year ago with representatives of the Science and Entrepreneurial Exchange (SEE), whose vision it is to bring real-world experiences to young people.

The program is designed to have students create an item in order to learn about product design, development, manufacturing and marketing. At Indian Trail, seven teams of students were given the assignment of developing a lamp for a child’s room. The teams came up with ideas they eventually pitched in a setting like the TV program, “Shark Tank,” to executives from the Land of Nod. At the end of the program, the girls that created the “Write Idea” lamp were declared the winners. Their pencil lamp with a whiteboard base will be manufactured and sold in a future Land of Nod catalog.

Mayor Veenstra complimented all the students who had participated in the IAC program and he presented the winning team members with certificates and gift cards.

IC Catholic Prep girls volleyball team opens season with a win

Sometimes smaller numbers are better.

Such was the case with the iC Catholic Prep girls volleyball team in its season opener against Lisle.

The Knights were 25-11, 26-16 non-conference winners against Lisle thanks to a balanced effort.

Nailah Landon, a junior, had seven kills and three blocks. Junior Maya Stovall had eight kills and six service aces. Freshman Sophie Hurt had 21 assists and two digs. Freshman Kaya Hood had five kills and one block.

Freshman Kristen Brachmann had one kill and four blocks. Senior Sophie Zanoni had five digs. Sophomore Bella Leslie had seven digs and one service ace, while senior Josie Lyt-

ton had seven digs, one kill and one block.

“I really liked how balanced we were,” said IC Catholic Prep coach Nancy D’Amore. “I kind of felt that in the match but when I looked over the stats, we were incredibly balanced across the board with passing, serving, digging and attacks. The only category where one person was way ahead was blocking. I liked the balance. It means we are moving the ball around. It means a lot of girls are stepping up and doing various jobs on the court. That’s what I like to see. We aren’t reliant on one or two players.”

Back for the Knights from last year’s squad are Lytton, a six-rotation outside and right-side hitter, Zanoni, a defensive specialist, Landon, an outside hitter-middle blocker, Stovall, an

outside hitter, and junior Olivia Hurt, a defensive specialist.

Newcomers to the team include the freshmen trio of Sophie Hurt (setter), Brachmann (middle blocker) and Hood (middle blocker), along with sophomore libero-defensive specialist Leslie.

“The freshmen already are contributing,” said D’Amore. “They were a part of that balanced outcome against Lisle. They will be a big part of the team. You couldn’t tell they were freshmen on the court.”

As always with IC Catholic Prep teams, defense will be a big strength.

“We’ll be strong with defense and passing. We spend a lot of time on it,” said D’Amore. “This year will be no different. It’s an expectation. But what I’m excited to see is we’re adding a

powerful offense on top of it. We have some big players (Brachmann is 5-11, Landon is 6-0 and Hood is 6-3) in the front row. Time will tell, but I’m excited about what we’ve put together in the offensive area. Our fundamentals have to be there and we have to stay consistent with our serving and we have to have the passing and the team defense working for us in order to be successful.”

D’Amore noted the Knights have not been at full strength in the early going of the season with Landon, Hood and Sophie Hurt missing time.

“Those three haven’t really worked together a lot,” she said. “Going into that Lisle match we had our setter and two hitters who hadn’t worked with each other, but you couldn’t tell. Once we get them working together we’ll

see what that offense looks like. I’m excited. We’ll have an opportunity to move some attackers around and create some different looks with our offensive attack. That’s what we’ll be focusing on the next few weeks. I feel like I’m just getting to look at them offensively right now.”

D’Amore sees a competitive Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division.

“It’s interesting this year. There is no big standout,” she said. “I think it’s going to be tough across the board.

On paper, the teams are pretty wellmatched. Glenbard South always is strong and Riverside-Brookfield is always good and Illiana Christian is a good matchup for us as well.”

The Knights head to the Westmont-Timothy Christian tournament this weekend.

The value of today’s libraries goes beyond books. Librarians are leaders in their communities – helping people of any age to find what they need to help improve their quality of life. This September, Addison Public Library is joining with the American Library Association and libraries nationwide for Library Card Sign-up Month, an initiative to make sure that every student has the most important school supply of all – a free library card.

Libraries build a foundation for children’s future success starting from the earliest stages of development. Librarians play a key role in helping children develop the basic tools for school readiness by teaching families the components of early literacy.

As of 2010, children’s programs accounted for nearly two-thirds of library programming in the United States, with more than 2.3 million children’s programs nationwide.

Older students can also find tools for success at their local libraries, where they can access high-speed Internet and digital tools, as well as working with trained professionals on how best to use these resources.

As new technologies evolve, libraries continue to lead the way in providing equity of access to digital tools and media, which has become increasingly important in high-poverty areas where students are less likely to have a computer or internet service at home. Close to 90 percent of libraries offer digital literacy training to help students of all ages navigate today’s changing world; many also offer high-tech innovations like laser cutters and 3D printers, providing hands-on opportunities for creative exploration.

Resources at the Addison Public Library are available to anyone with a library card. Students can turn to the library for materials, programs and knowledgeable library staff that support academic achievement. A few of our resources that support lifelong learning are Homework Help, Senior Computer Camp, Office Skills, and Gale Courses.

Conroy legislation creates committee on mental health conditions Illinois will now have a volunteer advisory committee comprised of legislators and healthcare experts dedicated to the early identification and treatment of mental health issues thanks to legislation sponsored

by State Rep. Deb Conroy (D-Villa Park) that was signed into law Friday.

“The passing of this bill shows us that our legislature is serious about taking on the challenges of treating and bringing awareness to mental health conditions,” said Conroy. “As chairman of the House Mental Health Committee I am committed to working with legislators to create a robust

statewide mental health system.”

Conroy worked with Thresholds, a national mental health provider and advocacy group, to create this advisory committee responsible for reviewing evidence based practices and initiatives on regular screenings and identification of mental health conditions in young people. Members of the committee, who will serve without compensation or reimbursement, will also be responsible for identifying barriers to access of services such as insurance coverage issues and lack of adequate resources. The General Assembly voted unanimously to create this committee.

Addison Trail and Willowbrook football teams victorious in Week 1 Hernandez rejoins Addison Trail boys’ soccer team

Both the Addison Trail and Willowbrook football teams got the season started on the right foot.

Addison Trail traveled to Glen Ellyn and scored a 28-0 non-conference win against Glenbard South.

The Blazers led 7-0 at halftime after a second-quarter touchdown.

Addison Trail made it 14-0 after three quarters and then tacked on 14 additional points in the final stanza.

Senior Nick Dambrose ran 26 times for 224 yards and scored two touchdowns. Junior quarterback Nick Daudelin went 10-for-17 for 143 yards. He also ran seven times for 40 yards and scored a touchdown. Pablo Mosely ran seven times for 29 yards.

Christian Cici caught one pass for 62 yards. AJ Parnell caught three passes for 48 yards, while Mosely had three catches for 23 yards.

On defense, Cici had an 18-yard interception return.

Randy Petrbok scored the team’s other touchdown via a fumble recovery and Jacob Grygo kicked four extra points.

Addison Trail travels to Elmhurst to face York in Week 2.

Willowbrook football The Willowbrook football team recorded a 42-0 non-conference win against Grayslake Central in Week 1.

Dating back to last season, the Warriors have now won seven of their last nine contests.

Willowbrook faces Hinsdale Central in a West Suburban Conference crossover game Friday.

Addison Trail boys soccer As an addendum to last week’s story on the Addison Trail boys soccer team, coach Ryan Dini noted senior standout Jonathan Hernandez is back on the team.

“It was a pleasant surprise hav-

ing one of our top players from last year back for his senior year,” said Dini. “Jonathan was going to go the academy route but decided to finish his senior season with Addison Trail.”

Hernandez was an all-conference performer last year after scoring 14 goals and tallying 13 assists. He has 24 career varsity goals and 30 career assists as a four-year starter.

“Jonathan is 5-11 and is a holding forward for us up top,” said Dini.

“He is very unselfish and creates a lot of chances for himself and his teammate. It is a huge addition for us and should allow for us to have another solid year.”

Willowbrook boys golf The Willowbrook boys golf team dropped a 161-171 non-conference match to West Chicago at Sugar Creek in Villa Park.

Senior Buddy Martens, sophomore Logan Rattana and junior Joey Guthrie each shot 42 to lead Willowbrook. Junior Jackson Hathaway had a 45.

Addison Trail girls volleyball team returns Muell entering third season on varsity

The Addison Trail girls volleyball team is coming off a 2016 season where it went 22-13 and took second in the West Suburban Conference Gold Division with a 5-1 record.

Back for the Blazers and coach Dan Styler are 5-7 junior outside hitter Nina Muell, who started as

a freshman and sophomore, senior 5-10 middle blocker Nicci Scorza (starter from last year), senior 5-7 outside hitter-middle blocker Giovanna Scarabaggio (returning starter), senior 5-3 outside hitter Sofia Susa and sophomore 5-6 outside hitter Jessica D’Ambrose. Susa was a defensive-specialist last year and will take on the starting libero job this year, while D’Ambrose played some last year but will see more time as a starting six-rotation player this season.

Key newcomers to the team include junior 5-6 setter Sam Pocie-

cha and junior 5-10 middle blocker Serena Gilliam.

“We have a nice blend of key returners and newcomers working together in the gym,” said Styler. “We look forward to competing with teams to help fuel our growth this season.”

Styler also has been pleased with the team’s gritty play on the defensive end of the floor, as well as the squad’s progress offensively.

“Our key returners on the offensive end have improved their court vision and are more explosive than they were a year ago,” said Styler.

“We have a strong core of primary passers that helps us establish a solid foundation. However, we have tremendous room for growth to get better in this skill area.”

Styler is impressed as well with the leadership he’s seen displayed on the court. “Players are taking the lead on carrying over program-established habits and traditions,” he said.

On the individual front, Styler noted Muell has added four inches to her vertical. “She is hungry to carry more responsibility on her shoulders as she heads into her third

year as a starter,” he said.

Scorza, Styler noted, is a strong physical presence at the net “and has become more aggressive as an attacker,” he added.

Susa was hard at work on her game in the off-season. “Sofia worked tirelessly on her game in the offseason and has taken on the role as our leader on the court in the back row,” said Styler.

Styler said the team’s goal is to maintain its top-tier position in the West Suburban Gold.

“Our goal is to get better every day,” he said.

Willowbrook girls tennis team returns No. 1 singles player Wachholz

It never hurts to have a top player returning to a team.

That’s the case this year with the Willowbrook girls tennis team, which welcomes back junior No. 1 singles player Grace Wachholz.

“Grace is playing No. 1 singles again this year. She worked very hard over the summer and has improved a lot,” said Willowbrook coach Christy Scardina. “I am excited to see all of her hard work in action.”

Senior Hailey Vogt will play doubles with senior Millie Zachariah.

Both played doubles last year, but their partners graduated.

Senior Cate Storck and junior Andrea Zulawski are returning doubles partners who will be teaming up this year. It’s their third year together.

Scardina noted the program has grown in numbers with 10 more players on the squad this year. “There are a lot of athletes out for the team so we are excited to see what they can do on the court once the matches

The Willowbrook girls volleyball team opened the season with a 25-18, 19-25, 25-19 non-conference loss to Bartlett.

Hanna Konrath had one ace and nine digs for the Warriors. Taylor Balsitis had six kills, one solo block and one dig. Payton Ceh had one kill, six aces and 11 digs. Jenny Krenzel had one kill and two digs. Teresa Noah had one ace and 10 assists to go with four digs. Katie Smith had one kill.

Cailiegh Tuma had four kills and one solo block. Katelyn McCann had two kills, two aces, one assist and 16 digs. Emma Barrington had five kills and two digs. Marissa Marcello had two digs, while Jessica Ragucci had five kills, 11 assists and two digs.

The Warriors are under the direction of new coach Irene Mason.

She takes over a team that went 1522 overall in 2016 and 3-3 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division play (tied for third).

Ceh is the team’s top returning player. The 5-4 sophomore was the starting libero last year as a freshman, earning all-conference honors after posting 261 digs and 67 aces.

Mason has 10 juniors on the squad.

“On any given day any one of them could be the player to step up and help lead our team to a victory,” she said. “All of them have been working hard to compete and improve.”

Mason said Barrington (5-8, right side), Noah (5-3, setter), Tuma (5-7, middle blocker) and McCann (5-8, outside hitter) stood out in the preseason, while defensive specialists Konrath and Krenzel “have been pushing themselves to play the type of relentless defense that we’re looking to bring to every game. I’m expecting both of them, along with Payton, in the back court to lead the team through their defensive intensity.”

Willowbrook also will benefit from the senior presence of Balsitis (middle blocker), Marcello (setter), Smith (outside hitter) and Ragucci (right side).

“I’m looking for the four seniors to provide leadership and I’m expecting another standout season from Payton,” said Mason. “In addition to the five returning players, I’m counting on many of the 10 juniors to rise to the occasion and fill big roles. All the girls are getting on board with the new system and seem pumped and ready to compete.”

Mason said her first year as head coach has gotten off to a strong start thanks to the players on her roster.

“I’m extremely excited to have the opportunity to take over as head coach of the program this year,” she said. “The players have been working hard and pushing themselves to compete and improve every single day. The defensive energy and overall enthusiasm in the gym have been awesome. We’re looking forward to every match on our schedule. We are hoping to upset some teams and improve on the record and conference finish from last season.”

Hegner said the thing he likes most about the team is its ability to mix fun and tennis together. “They are hard-working but also have a lot of fun,” he said. “They know when to get down to business and when to have a good time. You have to have both when you are practicing and competing.”

Hegner noted the team’s goal is to get third or higher in the West Suburban Gold and to try to have a player qualify for state.

Fenton boys soccer team defeats Illiana Christian

Bison football team loses to Leyden

The Fenton boys soccer team recorded a recent 6-1 victory against Illiana Christian.

Angel Barriga had two goals to lead the way for the Bison. Abraham Sanchez, Ivan Jaramillo, Cesar Mendoza and Johnny Chavez each added a goal.

The Bison also dropped a close 4-3 contest to Hinsdale Central. Jaramillo, Moises Noyola and Barriga each had a goal.

Fenton is coming off a 2016 season where it went 8-10-3.

New coach Victor Ruiz (also the school’s girls soccer coach) returns senior Barriga who had 12 goals and 11 assists last year and is a three-year all-conference player.

Barriga earned all-sectional honors his junior and senior years.

“Angel is our best player and leader of this team,” said Ruiz. “We will look for his leadership to guide the new team.”

Other contributors for Fenton will include the likes of freshman Jaramillo, sophomore Sebastian Palacios, junior Ethan Rojas, junior Ismael Ibarez and junior goalie Carlos Popoca.

Fenton returns to action Friday when it heads to Palos Heights in the south suburbs to face Shepard High School in a non-conference game at 7 p.m. Fenton then has Metro Suburban Conference crossover games with Guerin Prep and Walther Christian before opening conference play in Week 5.
