Bond set at $50,000 each for Addison brothers charged with forging court documents

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced that bond has been set for two brothers accused of submitting false court-ordered documents to DuPage County officials.

Brett Cronan, 21, and Jack Cronan, 18, both of Addison, appeared in bond court last week where bond was set at $50,000 with 10% to apply for each.

It is alleged that on August 16, 2017, Brett Cronan appeared in court at which time he indicated that he had completed public service employment as ordered by the court regarding a guilty finding on a previous Manufacture/Delivery of Cannabis charge. Upon receipt of this information, officials with the Department of Probation attempted to verify the community service allegedly performed by Brett Cronan but could not do so.

It is further alleged that Brett Cronan did not complete the court-ordered public service employment and that he falsified a manager’s signature indicating that he had.

On August 14, 2017, Jack Cronan presented alleged forged documents to the court as well attesting to public service employment he had allegedly performed.

Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendants’ guilt. The defendants are presumed innocent and are entitled to a fair trial in which it is the government’s burden to prove their guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Cross Country gets under way at Indian Trail

Indian Trail Junior High students got a head start on the cross country season by participating in a summer running camp offered the first three weeks of August. Coaches Dave Pytko and Sherri Perez are running the camp which allows 6th, 7th and 8th graders some extra time to work on their training.

EEH system plans to reduce costs by $50 million over next year Mastro: Existing cost structures not sustainable; more efficiency needed

On Tuesday, Aug. 15, Mary Lou Mastro, System CEO for Edward-Elmhurst Health, held a news conference to discuss the company’s plan to reduce costs by $50 million over the next year.

“In order for Edward-Elmhurst Health to continue to be the strong, stable organization that it is today, we must carefully manage our financial situation,” said Mastro. “Hospitals recognize that our existing cost structures are not sustainable. We must become more efficient and ensure that our expenses are well-managed.”

Reductions will include both labor and non-labor expenses and will represent approximately 4 percent of total expenses, according to Mastro.

It’s no surprise that hospitals across the country are facing many kinds financial pressure. Those that specif-

ically challenge Edward-Elmhurst Health include: • The number of patients in both Medicare and Medicaid has increased.

These government programs do not cover the costs of patient care.

• Insured patients do not always have the resources to pay their higher co-pays and deductibles, which has contributed to increasing bad debt.

• There has been an increase in charity care.

• The number of individuals with commercial insurance has declined.

Even for those who have it, commercial payments typically do not keep up with medical inflation.

• Costs of pharmaceutical and medical supplies have increased dramatically.

On Sept. 23, College of DuPage (COD) will host a Food Truck Rally & Sunset 5K, and a portion of the proceeds will benefit District 88 students. Pictured are new staff who were introduced at the New Teacher Orientation held at Addison School District 4 last week for 35 people joining the district. Representing many aspects of education, including music, social work, intervention and a wide range of classroom teachers, these professionals spent three days learning about the operations of District 4. The new teachers also took a school bus tour of Addison, getting a feel for the community and the location of the district’s nine school buildings. On the last day of orientation, the new staff learned about the mentoring program, met with their mentors and enjoyed lunch with administrators and school board members before starting work in their classrooms.

‘Gathering Grains and Grooves’ coming to Center for the Arts The Addison Center for the Arts has announced its latest exhibit, “Gathering Grains and Grooves” by Benjamin F. Calvert III. The exhibit will be on display Aug. 23 - Sept. 23 with an artist reception Friday, Sept.

8 from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m.

Ben is a printmaker with a passion for nature and the interpretation of what is familiar. His art is created by carving images into wood, inking the wood, burnishing paper by hand onto the inked block, then pulling up the paper to reveal the print. Ben

states “pulling that first print off the block is pure joy. The excitement multiplies when there are multiple blocks for each color involved. Each successive color is a layer that informs the mystery and appeal of the final image.”

Besides the creation, Ben also takes much pleasure in the interpretations of his work and sharing the process with others. Ben will be at the gallery on Saturdays to answer questions. If you would like to try your hand at printmaking, the artist

will be offering a mini workshop during his exhibit for a nominal fee.

Works by Calvert have recently been shown at the Riverfront Gallery in Yonkers, New York, the Elmhurst Artists’ Guild Gallery, Porter-County Museum and public library in Valparaiso, Ind. Addison Aug. 17 Savannah White, 20, of Berwyn, was charged with retail theft at a store in the 1000 block of N. Rohlwing Road at around 5:14 p.m. Police said White placed $200 in her pocket, which fell onto the floor from the register.

• Shannon Shaughnessy, 22, of Aurora, was charged with possession of a controlled substance in the 400 block of Wesley at around 5:45 p.m.

• A 25-year-old Addison man was charged with domestic battery and criminal damage to property in the 600 block of N. Swift at around 2:51 a.m. Police said the suspect grabbed a victim’s wrist, causing a bruise, and then proceeded to damage the victim’s vehicle, breaking most of the windows.

Aug. 12 Richardo Ramirez, 26, of Addison, was charged with possession of a controlled substance, an expired license and no insurance near Mill and Wrightwood at 8:01 p.m.

• Nathan L. Swapsy, 37, of Milwaukee, Wis., was charged with obstructing identification and driving while license suspended in the 1-100 block of E. North Ave. at around 8:50 p.m.

• Battery was reported at a church in the area. Police said that between 1:45 and 2 a.m., two unknown male teens and one female teen approached and started yelling at a male sitting on a park bench. When the male got up and started to jog away, one of the male teens chased and battered him.

An ankylosed permanent tooth need not necessarily be extracted unless the surrounding teeth start to move around the ankylosed tooth, causing malocclusion.

A way to determine if a tooth is ankylosed is by a visual exam. An ankylosed tooth will appear as if it’s not erupting or is sinking back into the gum tissue. Tom Cullerton’s measure to save police dogs signed into law Illinois’ smallest heroes will soon be able to receive medical attention.

State Senator Tom Cullerton’s measure HB 2661 was signed into law last week.

House Bill 2661 allows for the transport of a police dog injured in the line of duty to be transported to a veterinary clinic or similar facility by emergency professionals. The bill stipulates that injured persons receive medical attention first, prior

to a police dog’s transport; however, this will allow medical professionals to transport them when necessary. The average cost for the initial training for a police K-9 can cost from $20,000 to $29,000. This does not account for maintenance, training, and general living expenses for the dog.

House Bill 2661 passed the Senate and House with bipartisan support and goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2018.

Addison Trail hosts Blackhawks Blind Hockey program On Aug. 17, nearly 40 youths with visual impairments had the opportunity to play hockey at Addison Trail through the Blackhawks Blind Hockey’s “Try Hockey” program. Many of the participants were from the School Association for Special Education in DuPage County (SASED).

The Blackhawks provided an inflatable rink, and participants received instruction to enhance their skills with stick handling, passing and understanding the game of hockey.

Willowbrook football team to be tested early Warriors open against three straight playoff opponents

The front end of the Willowbrook football team’s schedule this season will be no walk in the park.

The Warriors, coming off a 2016 state-quarterfinal run, will face three teams out of the gates who all made the 2016 state playoffs and had a

combined record of 24-7.

Willowbrook kicks off the season Friday at home against Grayslake North from the Northern Lake County Conference. Grayslake North went 8-3 last season and advanced to the second round of the playoffs. North beat Willowbrook 27-12 in Week 1in Grayslake last season.

Week 1 Preview Grayslake North at Willowbrook When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Where: Willowbrook High School, Villa Park Last year: Grayslake North 27, Willowbrook 12 Outlook: The Warriors, who advanced all the way to the Class 7A state quarterfinals last year, will be tested hard right out of the gates. Grayslake North advanced to the second round of the state playoffs last year and defeated the Warriors in Week 1 in Grayslake. Willowbrook is bolstered by the return of standout running back Jack Jessen. The Warriors then tackle defending West Suburban Conference Silver Division champion Hinsdale Central in Week 2 in Hinsdale.

Where: Glenbard South High School, Glen Ellyn Last year: Addison Trail 22, Glenbard South 20 Outlook: Blazers coach Paul Parpet Jr. is excited about the talent he has on both sides of the ball this season. The Blazers are coming off a 2016 season where they went 4-5. One of their victories was in Week 1 against Glenbard South. The Raiders play in the Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division and made the state playoffs last season with a 5-4 record, losing in the first round of the postseason to finish 5-5.

The Warriors then head to Hinsdale to start a two-year West Suburban Conference crossover series with Hinsdale Central on Friday, Sept. 1.

Hinsdale Central won the West Suburban Conference Silver Division and went 9-0 in the regular season but lost its first playoff game.

The Warriors stay on the road in Week 3 when they head to Leyden for their Friday, Sept. 8 contest. Leyden went 7-3 last year and made the playoffs. Leyden defeated Willowbrook 21-9 last year.

Week 4 on Friday, Sept. 15 sees the annual District 88 game take place at Willowbrook against Addison Trail. The Blazers went 4-5 last year. Willowbrook won last year’s meeting 38-7.

In Week 5 on Friday, Sept. 22, the Warriors head to Darien to face Hinsdale South. The Hornets went 4-5 a year ago, but won the meeting with Willowbrook by a 30-27 count.

Week 6 on Friday, Sept. 27 sees Willowbrook play its annual neighborhood game with York in Villa Park. The Dukes went 2-7 a year ago and lost 17-0 to Willowbrook in the 2016 meeting.

Willowbrook then plays its final regular-season road game in Week 7 on Friday, Oct. 6 when it heads to Morton for a game played at the Morton West campus. Morton went 1-8 last year. Willowbrook downed Morton 49-20 in the 2016 game.

The Warriors conclude the regular season with home games in Weeks 8 (Friday, Oct. 13) and 9 (Friday, Oct. 20) against Proviso East and Downers Grove South respectively.

Proviso East went 0-9 last year and lost 42-0 to Willowbrook. Downers South went 3-6 and lost 31-7 to the Warriors.

Willowbrook is coming off a 2016 season where it went 8-4 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Class 7A state playoffs, going 2-1 in the postseason.

This year, Willowbrook will face three playoff teams (all in the first three weeks of the season).

Fenton girls volleyball team looking to take the next step

The Fenton girls volleyball coaching staff has been candid about the fact it has struggled in the Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division the last few years.

And the Bison have plans to change that this season.

“Our main goal is to continue to improve every day,” said Fenton coach Kelly Kleidorfer. “After that, the one goal we as coaches have is we are looking for that elusive first

conference win. We have finished 13-23 (overall) each of the last two seasons and are looking to improve on that recored as well this season.”

Fenton returns a trio of juniors who saw time as sophomores a year ago. Junior Ashley Lira returns at libero after posting 191 digs and 41 aces in 2016. Junior Mackenzie Miller had 212 assists and 42 aces in the backup setter’s role, while junior Vicky Krzyszkowski had 127 kills and 41 blocks in the middle.

Key newcomers to the team include sophomore middle Julianna Krebasch and junior right-side hitter Hanna Matuszewski.

Kleidorfer points to serving as one of the team’s assets this fall. “Our serving is going to be one of our strengths,” she said. “We have many girls who are strong servers and we have different types of serves. We

certainly will be looking to our serving to score us a lot of points. Another big strength is our front-row attacks. We are looking very good all across the front row. We like that we are able to execute our offense in a couple different ways. We are able to run a few more options at this point in the season compared to the past few years.”

Fenton also will be improved on the defensive end at the net, Kleidorfer added. “Our blocking looks to be very improved this season,” she said.

“We are going to be able to block a lot more attacks this season.”

The Bison are hard at work improving their passing and serve-receive skills. “As for our passing and our serve-receive, we are spending a lot of time each day to develop those two areas,” Kleidorfer said. “We have room for improvement in both

areas. Once we get those two areas to become strengths, we will be in a great spot.”

Kleidorfer has been impressed with the team’s work ethic thus far in practice. “We love the way the girls have really come together as a team,” she said. “They have been working very hard to improve both their volleyball skills and togetherness as a team.”

Individually, Miller takes over the setting positions from graduated all-conference performer Paulina Milanowski. “Mackenzie has spent the last two seasons on the varsity learning from Paulina,” explained Kleidorfer. “When given the chance to play the last two seasons, she really responded.”

year, but has really taken a huge step forward,” said Kleidorfer.

Fenton once again will compete in a tough MSC Blue Division. “Our conference is extremely tough for volleyball,” the coach said. “We have really been improving the last three seasons but have yet to break through with that conference win. Riverside-Brookfield, Glenbard South, IC Catholic Prep and Aurora Central Catholic all are teams that are really successful each season.”

Fenton hosts its annual Bison Blast-Off Saturday.

“We have finished in second place each of the last two seasons, losing to Deerfield in the championship,” Kleidorfer pointed out.

“The tournament is a great opportunity for us to get five matches on our home floor in the early part of the season.”

District 88 welcomes new Board member Mark Turk sworn in at recent meeting

During its Aug. 14 meeting, the District 88 Board of Education appointed Mark Turk to fill a seat that opened after Lisa Lullo resigned from the Board. Turk will assume that position until the next Consolidated General Election on April 2, 2019.

Turk might be new to the Board, but he’s a familiar face in District 88 as the parent of two Addison Trail alumni – his daughter Sara, who graduated in 2005; and his son, Matthew, part of the class of 2009. Turk and his wife Denise have lived in Addison for more than three decades.

“I truly enjoy working with students and have a passion for education,” he said. “As a new member of the District 88 Board of Education, my focus is to enhance the educational experience for our students, as well as parent involvement.”

Turk has served on several committees that benefit Addison Trail pupils as: • Member of the Teacher-Parent Organization (TPO) and the Athletic, Music and Theatre booster clubs;

• Co-President of the Citizens Advisory Council (a group that discusses current issues prevalent in the high school and serves as a liaison between the Mark Turk community and the school board); • District 88 steering committees for curriculum, activities and athletics; • Co-Chair of the Building The Future Committee (a $104.7-million referendum proposal to modernize the infrastructure and learning environment of District 88, which passed in April 2007); • Board Member of the Partnership for Inspired Education (PIE) Foundation (a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that serves public school students in District 88, Addison School District 4, School District 45 and Salt Creek School District 48); • Board Member of the Addison Center for the Arts (a 501(c)(3) organization inside Addison Trail that was created to advance the arts through promoting community involvement, personal development, skill enhancement and interconnect-

According to a new research series released by the Illinois Economic Policy Institute (ILEPI), billions of dollars in state and local tax subsidies for corporations have yielded far fewer economic benefits than the same level of investment made in infrastructure and education. Also, it likely comes as no surprise that instead of aiding blighted areas most in need of economic development, Illinois subsidies have largely favored affluent communities.

While ILEPI is focused on the history and performance of more than $5 billion in Illinois corporate tax subsidies, the research comes on the heels of two neighbor states, which have caused eyebrows to raise over their own programs to draw businesses. Wisconsin has been called out for offering a $3 billion package to lure electronics manufacturer Foxconn. In addition, Indiana recently offered a $7 million subsidy to save jobs at a Carrier plant.

“The enormous strain on public budgets across the Midwest and the intensifying efforts to lure or retain employers with large tax subsidies cry out for review,” said ILEPI Policy Director Frank Manzo IV. “The fact is, taxpayers are too often not getting a good return on their investment and, absent much stricter accountability standards on the companies that receive these handouts, other spending priorities would do far more to benefit the economy and improve the region’s economic competitiveness.”

According to Good Jobs First, Illinois has given a sizable number of state and local tax subsidies to three of Illinois’ largest companies — Sears, Mitsubishi and Motorola. Those three corporations have received almost $900 million or roughly 20% of all tax subsidies in Illinois since 1985. One of the co-authors of the study claims taxpayers’ investment in these three companies have actually resulted in the elimination of jobs.

“In all three cases, massive amounts of money were provided to companies either threatening to leave the state or locate elsewhere,” noted study co-author Mary Craighead. “In the case of Sears, the impact was even more devastating, since the company moved more of its operations into the suburbs, eliminating jobs that were once accessible to the state’s most disadvantaged urban communities.”

Overall, ILEPI noted that the distribution of subsides is not necessarily tied to population trends or socio-economic needs of given communities or neighborhoods. One example cited

was Hoffman Estates, a village which accounts for just 0.4% of Illinois’ population, received 26% of all state corporate tax subsides ($520 million).

Meanwhile, southern portions of Chicago and Cook County — where population density, poverty, and unemployment rates are higher than state averages — have seen a disproportionately smaller share of tax subsidies than their more affluent neighbors to the north.

“The data suggest that Illinois’ state and local tax subsidy policies favor municipalities that are majority white, have poverty rates below the state’s average, and median incomes above the state average,” Craighead said.

“Instead of lifting disadvantage and undeserved communities, these policies appear to be expanding social and economic inequality.”

Using industry standard software, ILEPI compared the economic impact of the inflation-adjusted $288.5 million that Illinois taxpayers have annually spent on business tax subsidies since 2000, against comparable investments in infrastructure, education, and middle-class tax relief.

“When compared to the impact of other potential investments that state and local governments could be making, it is clear that Illinois’ current business tax subsidy policies have been an inefficient economic development tool, at best,” said Manzo. “Alternatively, if Illinois had used the $288.5 million per year they are currently spending on business tax subsides to help balance public budgets, it could have potentially avoided credit rating downgrades that have already cost taxpayers and reduced investor confidence.”

ILEPI’s analysis includes a detailed set of proposed reforms to improve the success and accountability of tax incentive programs to corporations.

The Institute suggests tying receipt of subsidies to more specific job creation goals and wage and benefit standards; more consistent and uniform enforcement of accountability measures; developing a comprehensive economic development strategy which would better focus on communities most in need; and, the reallocation of subsidy dollars into infrastructure or job training programs that improve overall economic competitiveness.

“As the state continues to grapple with over $251 billion in unfunded pension liabilities and $15 billion in overdue bills, effectively using taxpayers’ money is of the utmost importance,” Manzo said. “Ultimately, we believe it is in the state’s best interest to continually evaluate its subsidy practices and promote balanced policies.”
