The Village of Addison and the Medinah Shriners will be holding a parade in Addison on Sunday, Aug. 26. This will be the first community wide parade in Addison since 2008.

The theme of the Parade is “Addison Celebrates the Illinois Bicentennial.”

The Medinah Shriners have committed 25 of their parade units to the parade, including flying carpets, clowns, motor corps, big wheels, Highlanders, fire, police, patrol, military, chanters and shrine clubs. The Addison Trail High School Marching Blazers band will perform. State and local dignitaries, and more than 40 Addison-based local taxing bodies, not-for-profit organizations, businesses and community groups are also expected to participate.

The parade route will follow 1.7 miles east on the two eastbound lanes of Army Trail Boulevard from Addison Trail High School to Kennedy Drive. The parade route will be closed to traffic at 1:30 p.m. The parade will step off at 3 p.m. Due to road construction, the parade will be viewable from the south side of Army Trail Boulevard only.

Fall Art Exhibition at college explores artist’s large-scale prints, more

Jeanine Coupe Ryding presents ‘Coda For The Day’

Artist Jeanine Coupe Ryding is best known for her richly layered, inventive, and often monumental, woodcut prints. Her forms and color record her observations of nature and of daily life, described in her expressive gestural cutting into the wood block plate.

Elmhurst College will present “Coda for the Day,” an exhibition of her work, beginning on Aug. 15. Her exhibition comprises a selection of 15 large-scale relief prints, 11 artist books and eight collages from the last 10 years. The exhibition is curated by Doug Stapleton, associate curator of art at the Illinois State Museum.

“I am thrilled to host this exhibition of Jeanine Coupe Ryding’s work curated by Doug Stapleton,” said Suellen Rocca, curator and director of exhibits at Elmhurst Collee. “Both the curator and artist will discuss the exhibition at the public reception, which should provide great insight into the work.”

Ryding’s prints and artist books are in museum and

private collections throughout the U.S., Europe and Japan. She received her B.A. degree from the University of Iowa and her MFA from Universitat der Kunste in Berlin. She has received various awards and residencies, including from the Illinois Arts Council Award, Arts Midwest, Frans Masereel Center, Belgium and Anchor Graphics, Chicago. Ryding has been an adjunct associate professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago since 1991.

Lizzadro Museum plans fossil trip, volcano program

On Sunday, Aug. 19, the Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art located at 220 Cottage Hill in Elmhurst’s Wilder Park, is hosting a Fossil Collecting Field Trip. Travel by motor coach to a quarry in Rockford, where recent blasting at this quarry has revealed a new layer of collectable fossils. These dolomitic limestone rocks are Ordovician in age and contain abundant fossils including brachiopods, cephalopods, corals, crinoids, gastropods, and more.

The motor coach departs from the Museum at 8 a.m. and plans to return about 2 p.m. This event is recommended for ages 8 years through adult. The fee is $45 payable in advance and reservations are required. To register, call 630-833-1616.

On Saturday, Aug. 25 at 2 p.m., Lizzadro welcomes Geologist Sara Kurth who will present a 60-minute interactive lecture on volcanoes. Lincoln learned how to deal with a divided press just as he did with a divided country. “Mr. Lincoln understood the power of the press. He well understood the excesses of the media, especially during his presidency. On the whole, he was thick-skinned, but he did object to falsehoods, calumnies, libel and slander,” noted Lewis Lehrman, author of “Lincoln at Peoria: The Turning Point.”

“Lincoln’s genius with the press consisted primarily in presenting arguments for the Union cause and emancipation which prevailed over the common prejudices of the day. His fairmindedness, even in the face of vicious press attacks, was apparent to all—in the end, even to his enemies,” Lehrman said.

Holzer suggested that a lifetime of reading, writing and negotiating with newspapers laid the groundwork for what Lincoln was able to do as president: reach the public with letters to the editor spelling out his positions on some of the much-debated issues of the day.

“With his dramatic letters of 1862 and 1863, Lincoln in some ways wrote the big three New York editors out of the equation when it came to molding public opinion,” the historian noted.

Lincoln’s habit of maintaining close ties with members of the press as president didn’t always set well with members of his Cabinet.

Writing in his diary in 1864, Navy Secretary Gideon Welles complained: “It is an infirmity of the President that he permits the little news mongers to come around him and be intimate, and in this he is encouraged by (Secretary of State William) Seward, who does the same, and

even courts the corrupt and the vicious, which the President does not. He has great inquisitiveness.

Likes to hear all the political gossip as much as Seward. But the President is honest, sincere and confiding—traits which are not so prominent in some by whom he is surrounded.”

When it came to using the technology of the day, Lincoln learned about sending messages by wire from Charles Tinker, a telegraph operator he met at the Tazewell House hotel in Pekin in 1857. By the time he moved to Washington in 1860, Lincoln was well aware of how the telegraph operated and ways he could use it, stated Tom Wheeler, author of “Mr. Lincoln’s T-Mails: The Untold Story of How Abraham Lincoln Used the Telegraph to Win the Civil War.” Lincoln not only installed a telegraph office at the White House but used that office as a situation room, allowing the president to communicate with field commanders in the nearest thing to real time that was available in the 1860s, noted Wheeler, adding that Lincoln sent out almost 1,000 telegrams during his time in the executive office.

But speed of transmission wasn’t the only factor that made Lincoln a great communicator.

“Lincoln was a master political strategist.

He understood what it took to get the message out to people,” said Peter Schnall, a filmmaker whose “Lincoln@Gettysburg” program was shown on PBS in 2013.

The president’s 272-word Gettysburg Address was a good example of adapting his message to the media, Schnall said, “(Lincoln) knew the speech would be telegraphed across the nation; within 48 hours every newspaper as far as California had printed the speech straight on the front page, which is exactly what he was aiming for.”

Health department says ‘Fight the Bite’ to protect against West Nile virus Increase in infected mosquito samples raises risk level A spike in mosquito samples testing positive for West Nile virus (WNV) has the DuPage County Health Department reminding residents to protect themselves from mosquito bites and the risk of contracting WNV. The number of mosquito samples testing positive for WNV rose to 56 percent for the week ending Aug. 4, compared to 38 percent the previous week. The key factors in determining the degree of West Nile virus activity are temperatures and rainfall. In hot, dry weather, mosquitoes that carry West Nile virus (primarily Culex mosquitoes) breed in stagnant water like street catch basins and ditches, where they multiply rapidly.

“With the high number of mosquito samples testing positive for West Nile virus, it’s important to ‘Fight the Bite,’” said Karen Ayala, Health De-

partment Executive Director.

To protect yourself and your family, and help prevent mosquitoes from breeding around your home, follow the “4 Ds of Defense:” • Drain: Drain those items that collect standing water around your home, yard or business. Scrub and refill pet water dishes and bird baths regularly.

• Defend: Use an insect repellent containing DEET when outdoors and reapply according to directions.

• Dress: Wear long pants, long sleeves and closed-toe shoes when outside to cover the skin.

• Dusk to Dawn: Wear repellent outdoors during these prime times for mosquito activity.

Residents should check the Personal Protection Index (PPI) on the DuPage County Health Department’s website for the current WNV activi-

ty. The PPI ranges in risk level from zero-to-three, with zero being no activity and three announcing multiple human cases of WNV in DuPage County.

The current level is “2: Moderate Risk,” defined as high numbers of infected mosquitoes in most areas, at least one human case. The recommended actions: Drain, Defend, Dusk to Dawn.

Many community partners including townships, municipalities and park districts, also have the PPI widget posted to their homepages.

The PPI is updated every Wednesday at 3 p.m. all during the WNV season by the Health Department’s vector-borne disease surveillance experts. WNV activity generally decreases in the fall when cooler temperatures arrive and especially after the first frost of the season.

District 88 Board welcomes new member Haralambopoulos fills vacancy left

Tina Haralambopoulos might be new to the Board of Education, but she’s a familiar face to District 88.

In 2002, she graduated from Addison Trail High Tina School, where she was a member of Haralambopoulos the Varsity Girls Swim Team, the Blazettes and the Art Staff. Many of her family members are alumni of Addison Trail as well, including her parents, Art and Lisa Haralambopoulos; her sisters, Marissa Haralambopoulos and Nicole (Haralambopoulos) Katavic; her brother-in-law, Christian Katavic; several cousins, aunts and uncles; and her great-uncle, who is a member of the school’s very first graduating class.

At a Special Meeting of the District 88 Board of Education held on Aug. 2, Tina Haralambopoulos was appointed to the seat left vacant by the resignation of Timothy Gillen.

She will remain in that position until the Consolidated Election on April 2, 2019. She is an Addison Trail alumna (class of 2002), and she resides in Addison.

‘No greater gift than giving back’ “There is no greater gift than giving back to the district that played a large part in my life,” Haralambopoulos said. “I have been a resident of Addison for the majority of my life and attended Addison public schools for eight years – including being an alumna of Addison Trail.”

After earning her associate degree in science from C.O.D., her B.A. in elementary education from NIU, and her M.A. in curriculum and instruction from Concordia University, Haralambopoulos continues pursuing her doctoral degree in organizational leadership. Seven years ago, she began her career as an elementary teacher at a private school in Schaumburg. Haralambopoulos now teaches English as a Second Language (ESL) at a hybrid charter school in Chicago. Through those positions, she has served on the

Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) as a member and as President, as a member of the Curriculum Committee, and as President of the Staff Leadership Committee.

“My career is my passion, and this is a great opportunity to bring a teacher’s perspective to the District 88 Board of Education,” she said.

“I am looking forward to working with a great team to continue the district’s work of focusing on creating the best school environment for students and staff. My personal philosophy with education always puts students in the driver’s seat of their learning. I believe my philosophy of student education aligns very well with District 88’s Mission and Vision.”

District 88 Board extends welcome Haralambopoulos will be officially sworn in during the Aug. 27 meeting.

“It’s always fulfilling and a great testament to the district to have alumni come home and step up to serve their alma mater,” District 88 Board President Donna Craft Cain said. “The experience Haralambopoulos will share and bring to the table through her education and career background will be a tremendous asset to our Board, to our students and to our school community. She will expand our collective knowledge and perspective and will help ensure we remain student-focused.”

District 4 returns to school Aug. 21

Students in Addison School District 4 will be returning to classrooms soon. The first day of school for students in grades 1 - 8 is Tuesday, Aug. 21. Kindergarten students have their first day in the classroom on Thursday, Aug. 23. All ASD4 kindergartners attend fullday classes. Those in preschool and the early childhood program will begin their school year on Tuesday, Aug. 27.

While many ASD4 staff members have attended professional development activities over the summer, their first day is Monday, Aug. 20. The opening institute day will begin with a breakfast meeting at the Medinah Shrine Center where author Tom Murray will be the keynote speaker, focusing on transforming learning for our students and being “future ready.”

Ten international students graduate from EC’s Summer Immersion Program As part of Elmhurst College’s ongoing efforts to become a more global campus, the College recently celebrated 10 international high school students who took part in the second annual Elmhurst College 2018 Summer Immersion Program.

During the nearly month-long academic and cultural program, international students experienced what college life is like by immersing themselves in the fun and excitement of a busy Chicago summer.

They took a course in global business and learned about choosing and attending a college in the U.S. They also plunged into a whirlwind of cultural activities that included Major League Baseball, high-end shopping, Chicago sight-

seeing, and a camping trip.

At the program’s graduation ceremony on Aug. 1, the students, who have come from different cities and high schools in Vietnam and Greece, received a certificate of achievement, college credit for their coursework and a $2,000 scholarship. They also were enthusiastically invited to rejoin the Elmhurst College community one day, as full-time students.

“We created this program because we wanted to provide international students with a unique experience,” said Timothy Ricordati, vice president for admission.

“America always has been, and always will be, a place that welcomes everyone from around the world.

Hopefully, over the last three and

a half weeks, Elmhurst College has provided a little of that welcome to you. What you have seen here is truly what America is about.”

President Troy D. VanAken said the Summer Immersion Program is “paving the way for Elmhurst College to become even more of a

global campus,” and he applauded the students for working and playing hard throughout the program.

“We hope many of you will choose to study here,” he said.

That’s the wish of 16-year-old Evelyn Do, from Da Nang, Vietnam. Once she finishes high school

in two more years, she plans to come back to study criminal justice or law.

“I really appreciate that Elmhurst College gave me a lot of opportunities to develop my academic and communication skills,” she said. “I loved it so much.”

Craft vendors needed for DuPage Care Center’s fall festival The DuPage Care Center located at 400 N. County Farm Road in Wheaton is currently seeking craft vendors for the 51st annual Fall Festival to be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15 in the Center’s west parking lot.

Community Parade to cause road closures on Aug . 26

The Village of Addison and Medinah Shriners are co-sponsoring the first community-wide parade in Addison since 2008 on Sunday, Aug. 26.

The theme of the parade is “Addison Celebrates the Illinois Bicentennial.”

The parade will proceed from Addison Trail High School along Army Trail Blvd. to the Village Hall complex by Kennedy Drive.

The following roads will be closed to all vehicular traffic starting at 1:30 p.m.: • Army Trail Blvd. east from Route 53 to the cul-de-sac including all road intersections along the route • Kennedy Drive north to Lake St. • Lombard Road north from Diversey. to Stone Aves.

• May St between Natoma Ave. and Army Trail Blvd.

• No parking on Church St. from Moreland. to Natoma Aves.

Roads are not expected to be reopened until early evening with the exception of Army Trail Blvd. between School St. and the cul-de-sac and May St. between Natoma Ave. and Army Trail Bld. for the Bicentennial Bash festival from 4-9 p.m.

Returning home after an anniversary vacation

My husband and I recently indulged in a couple days away as a couple to celebrate our anniversary. When we partake on such expeditions (which isn’t often) we both understand the significance of the outcome. That is, the outcome upon returning home – to a house inhabited by our three sons, some official adults, some nearly so.

They try. Oh, we know they try.

They even keep tabs on the exact timing of our return so they can make an attempt at a clean up. We appreciate their efforts.

But we also fully appreciate there will be disarray. And crumbs. And a surprise or three.

Sometimes the surprises are even good ones.

They did not disappoint.

First the disarray: Of the three bathrooms they had access to (this does not include the backyard), only one was left with shreds of toilet paper. In the other two they’d been using facial tissues as a backup.

The paper towels were depleted as well. I only hope they didn’t flush them. Fearing the answer, I didn’t ask. (Don’t ask. Don’t tell.)

Nerf bullets were scattered on the floor. It was no surprise. We come home to Nerf bullets all the time. Thankfully there was no blood. Nerf bullets typically do not produce blood.

Speaking of fluids, we were completely out of milk. Half and Half was out of the question. As I didn’t notice this until the morning following our return I was forced to drink coffee of the high-octane version. My boys owe me.

It only follows we were out of food. Imagine life without frozen pizza.

They’d been forced to make their own omelets. After the eggs ran out they’d been relying on peanut butter for sustenance and we were even depleted of that.

Living conditions for them had become pretty dire. Luckily they still had running water and canned soup.

There was a broken light bulb in the bathroom garbage can.

Unfortunately I discovered it when my foot discovered a shard of errant light bulb glass on the floor.

Ouch! The bulb in question came from a ceiling fan above our bed. I don’t even want to speculate as to how it became broken, but it’s safe to say a Nerf bullet couldn’t do that sort of damage.

a full-sized bed pillow? I’ve yet to find the answer (or the pillow).

Now for the surprises: The cat treats were all gone (not much of a surprise). To their credit, they’d been treating the cats with a backup: tuna.

Further to their credit, they did have the tuna can carefully covered with plastic wrap and in the fridge. Two points for responsibility toward pets and healthful food handling practices.

All the goldfish were alive. The boys hadn’t overfed them, which they are wont to do. Another pet responsibility point.

The lawn was freshly mowed.

Exclamation point. Their dad was mowed over by that. They hadn’t run over any of my gardens, which in turn mowed me over. They’d moved the wheelbarrow in order to mow and it, in turn, was filled with rainwater, but we’ll ring this one up as an overall good surprise.

They’d done a couple loads of laundry. By laundry, I mean washing and drying. Folding was still on their to-do list, if they had one.

The sink was empty of dishes – because they’d loaded them into the dishwasher! And they are very good – talented even – at dirtying dishes in extremely large numbers so this was no small feat.

They’d brought the garbage down to the curb and (bonus point here) it was actually garbage day. Who says they aren’t paying attention?

Some would call it ill advised to leave three young men in charge of the household for a couple of days.

They’d probably be right.

But, it was our anniversary, and sometimes an anniversary trumps a house of disarray because disarray can be arrayed, but an anniversary can’t be rearranged.

It only comes around about once a year and if you miss it you lose it. Sort of like that one bed pillow.

Wisdom from simpler times, Laura Inglals Wilder Laura Ingalls Wilder was born Feb. 7, 1867, in Pepin County, Wis. My honey and I are just back from another visit to Pepin. I have been to her homes in South Dakota and Mansfield, Mo. as well.

Laura died Feb. 10, 1957 so she saw a lot of change in the world during her ninety years.

I am taken by her quotes about how we should appreciate the simple things as life moves too fast.

Most of us now would think life was pretty simple in 1957.

Willowbrook football team to play five homes games this season Warriors open with three in a row in Villa Park

The Willowbrook football team will get plenty of opportunities to play in front of its fans this year, particularly in the first third of the season.

The Warriors, who won the West Suburban Conference Gold Division title last year with a perfect 6-0 mark and advanced to the quarterfinal round of the state playoffs, will play five games at home this season, including the first three of the year.

Willowbrook will open the season at home Friday, Aug. 24 at 7:30 p.m., against Chicago Curie. The longtime traditional opener against neighbor

Glenbard East is no more. Glenbard East now is a member of the Upstate Eight Conference (that has 10 teams) and must play an entire conference schedule.

The Warriors then host Hinsdale Central in a West Suburban Conference crossover game on Friday, Aug. 31 at 7:30 p.m.

Willowbrook begins defense of its Gold Division title with a Friday Sept.

7 game at home against Leyden (7:30 p.m. start).

The Warriors will head to Addison in Week 4 for the annual District 88 meeting on Friday, Sept. 14 at 7:30 p.m.

More than 50 players earn all-academic honors

Addison Trail student-athletes excelled both in the classroom and on the field this past spring.

The Blazers had 51 student-athletes earn spring allacademic conference honors, while many others were honored for their athletic achievements.

In girls badminton, Mary Grace Mutia, Kasiz Czepiel and Bianca Piscopo earned all-conference honors, while Mutia, Czepiel, Thannia Arteaga, Martyna Bednarska, Edith Cabral, Robessa Llanto, Karina Lopez, Magdelena Marek, Emily Onorato, Piscopo and Destiny Reyes were all-academic honorees.

In baseball, Angelo Pahopos, Trevor Fulmer, Simon Marinelli, Michael Scali and AJ Parnell earned allconference honors, while Pahopos, Fulmer, Marinelli, Parnell, Matt Crandell, Michael Ruffolo and Bryan Peters were all-academic award winners.

For boys gymnastics, Caleb Michaliska, Matt Wojdak and Jakub Sitko were all-conference selections. Wojdak earned an all-state award for his performance in the state meet.

Sophia Hawkins was an all-conference pick for the Addison Trail softball team. Katie Lacni, Nicolette Scorza, Gianna Fugarino, Ramon Casey Jr., Gianna Trippiedi and Alexa Giometti were all-academic picks.

Jacob Grygo, David Zielinski, Bryan Florian and Mikey Strycharz were all-conference selections in boys volleyball. Grygo, Zielinski, Florian, Strycharz, Michael Chiarmonte and Michael Pudlo were all-academic picks.

Grygo earned all-state and all-area honors from other media outlets.

Eric Grygo to Brazil Jacob Grygo’s older brother, Eric, was chosen earlier this summer to be part of the USA DIII Basketball 2018 Brazil tour. Eric Grygo plays basketball at Benedictine University in Lisle.

The U.S. men’s teams started their tour July 16 in Orlando with a team orientation and then flew to Sao Paulo, Brazil to begin practice on July 17. Games started on July 18. While in Brazil, the team experienced educational, cultural and social aspects of Brazilian life through city, school and sports club visits, USA DIII Basketball said.

Grygo’s teammate at Benedictine, Kenny Bogus, also made the trip.

“I am so proud of Eric and Kenny,” Benedictine coach Keith Bunkenburg said in a Benedictine news release. “They have worked so hard this past year and they are very deserving of this honor, not only to represent Benedictine, but also represent the United States.”

The first week of high-school football practices in Illinois always is filled with plenty of anticipation.

Fenton High School was no exception last week.

“The first week of football always is a blessing,” said second-year Fenton coach Matt Lynch. “It went well. I have no complaints. The guys worked hard and they are learning. That’s all I can ask for. That first day of practice, there always is a big excitement to get started. It’s great to get back into the swing of things. Everything is good.”

Lynch said the biggest difference between his first summer as coach last year and now is knowledge-based.

“It’s the learning curve,” he said.

“Last year we got started late and there was a lot of coaching the coaches and getting the kids up to speed. Now, everybody is up to speed and we can focus on preparing the players.”

Lynch liked what he saw during the first week of practices. “I liked how hard our kids competed,” he said. “I also liked our retention, for sure. We were able to retain a lot of knowledge from the summer. That’s a pleasant thing to deal with.”

Lynch also is excited about the versatility and depth the program has developed in a short timeframe. “We have a lot of different players here,” he said.

“That’s been a positive this summer to have the number of different players we have who can play in a game. Instead of using the same kids over and over, we’re able to play a lot of different players. It makes a huge difference and it’s become a huge benefit for us, for the kids and for the program. Lynch said that depth comes from hard work. “I attribute it to the development of the players,” he said. “We’ve done a lot of hard work developing kids in the offseason to get them ready.”

Fenton will face a new challenge this season when it shifts to the Metro Suburban Conference Red Division, which features more of the smaller-enrollment schools in the conference, including St. Edward, Elmwood Park, Chicago Christian, Guerin Prep and Ridgewood.

“I haven’t spent much time thinking about it,” said Lynch. “It’s so new to me. I will take this as a learning experience and see how the structure of the conference goes. As the season goes on, I’ll have a better understanding of it. Right now, it’s kind of a wait-andsee approach. We’ll see how the conference lines up.”

Fenton used its 25 contact days throughout the summer, including competing in several 7-on-7 events.

“We spread our contact days out throughout the summer,” said Lynch.

“We did a fair amount of 7-on-7s and saw a fair amount of competition. We wanted to get a good mix of competition. We concentrated on schools our size and bigger.”

One of the 7-on-7 events occurred at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Looking ahead, Lynch is excited about the 2018 season and one of the reasons is the makeup of his roster.

“They are great kids who get along together,” he said. “They work together quite well. Every coach (wishes) to have that. They like being around each other and they encourage each other. That’s a huge plus to have for any team.”

Called Elmhurst One 95, the project will feature 20 elegant, maintenance-free residences located close to City Centre. All residences feature large open floor plans, three bedrooms plus a den, 2.5 baths, 10-foot ceilings and private outdoor terraces.

Each unit is flooded with natural light and contains almost the same square footage as a single-family home with no wasted space.

Prices will range from $799,900$1,100,000. Elmhurst One 95 is appointed with designer finishes, including Wolf/Sub-Zero and Kohler products.
