The Addison Park District’s new on-line registration system went live on August 1, and the technology promises to make signing up for programs easier than ever.

“RecTrac… allows you to sign up for programs anytime- 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” according to Park District staff.

The ‘user-friendly’ system is accessed via laptop, desktop or mobile device and allows residents (and non-residents) to sign up and pay for programs using credit or debit cards.

First time users of the system must set up a new household account online. Every account will be considered non-resident (and receive non-resident pricing) until proof of residency can be verified. This validation of residency is accomplished by visiting any Park District facility.

After verification, the process to register for programs is “very intuitive, you will have options to print or save a receipt from your home computer” promises the Park District.

Access to the system is through www.addisonparks.org. Click ‘Create an Account’ and follow the instructions. Once set up, head over to a Park District facility with a Photo ID (driver’s license or passport) and a property tax statement or current utility bill from the Village.

Police Reports

Area Police Departments recently reported the following arrests and citations. Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Addison Aug. 2 Giovanni B. Nardulli, 69, of Addison, was charged with disorderly conduct and criminal damage to property in the 200 block of N. Mill Road at around 8:12 p.m. Police said Nardulli exposed himself in public, and while in the booking room, he slammed a telephone to the ground, damaging the phone.

Aug. 1 Police said Giovanny Saucedo, 26, of Addison, had a failure to appear warrant out of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Department for a traffic violation.

July 27 David Nunez-Gonzalez, 23, of Chicago, was charged with burglary at around 12:23 p.m. Police said the suspect entered upon the property of a car dealership and took merchandise without permission or authority.

Police said Rodolfo Balderas-Martinez, 35, of Rockford, had a failure to appear warrant out of the Hoffman Estates Police Department. Subsequent to investigating a traffic accident in the 100 block of W. Lake St. at around 7:21 p.m., he was additionally charged with failure to reduce

speed to avoid an accident and driving while license revoked.

Police said a 29-year-old Addison man had an original warrant out of the Addison Police Department for domestic battery.

Villa Park July 29 Disorderly conduct was reported at a restaurant at around 11:50 p.m.

Police said an unknown suspect pulled the fire alarm at the restaurant after being asked to leave.

Theft was reported at an entertainment center. Police said that between 1:15 and 4:30 p.m., an unknown suspect stole credit cards, cash and an ID from a purse that was inadvertently left unattended.

July 28 A 36-year-old Villa Park man was charged with two counts of domestic battery in the 300 block of N. Mission at around 11:37 p.m. That day, the same suspect also was issued a complaint and arrest warrant for two counts of domestic battery that reportedly took place on June 17.

Criminal damage was reported at a bus company. Police said that between 10:30 a.m. and 4:58 p.m., an unknown suspect scratched the hood of an employee’s car while the vehicle was parked in the lot.

July 27 Kyle J. Siebert, 31, of Villa Park, was charged with public indecency in the 300 block of W. North Ave. at around 1:06 p.m.

Theft was reported in the 300

block of W. North Ave. Police said that between 2:30 and 6 p.m., an unknown suspect stole a wallet from behind a desk at a vendor’s booth at a local market.

July 26 Rene Manuel G. Zerrudo, 57, of Bloomingdale, was charged with possession of methamphetamine, violation of driving restrictions, improper lane usage and no insurance in the 300 block of W. Roosevelt at around 2:07 a.m.

July 25-July 26 Criminal damage was reported at a church. Police said that on July 25, an unknown suspect damaged the “Little Free Library” box on the southwest corner of the lot. Book pages were also cut up from approximately 15 books. At 10:43 a.m. July 26, between five and 10 more books were found to be damaged with the pages cut up.

July 25 Jose M. Chavez, 44, of Villa Park, was issued local adjunctions for unlawful possession of an alcoholic beverage and possession of alcoholic liquor in a public place in the 100 block of W. North Ave. at around 9:36 a.m.

Criminal damage was reported in the 400 block of W. Division. Police said that between 12 noon and 4:24 p.m., an unknown suspect put super glue in the door lock of a laundry room.

male suspect stole a vehicle that was parked in the lot with the keys left in the ignition. The vehicle was later recovered in Oak Brook with the assistance of Onstar.

July 24 Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 100 block of E. Park at around 10 p.m. Police said an unknown suspect entered a vehicle parked in a driveway and removed $100 cash and personal information.

July 23 Marcos Montano-Figueroa, 35, of Villa Park, was charged with two counts of DUI, improper parking on a roadway, no valid driver’s license and no insurance near Roosevelt and Summit at around 4:04 a.m.

Eric Oanes, 29, of Addison, was charged with interference with police, possession of an alcoholic beverage in public and littering in the 300 block of E. Kenilworth at around 1:45 a.m.

Jorge Velasquez, 32, of Lombard, was charged with two counts of DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol, speeding, improper lane usage and failure to use a turn signal when required near St. Charles and Route 83 at around 11:42 p.m.

July 22-July 23 A stolen vehicle was reported in the 100 block of N. Third. Police said that between 5:30 p.m. July 22 and 11:30 a.m. July 23, an unknown suspect stole a black Chrysler Sebring that was parked in the roadway.

Criminal damage was reported in the 700 block of N. Bierman. Police said that between 9:30 p.m. July 22 and 12:59 a.m. July 23, an unknown suspect scratched a vehicle parked on the front lawn in the area.

July 22 Rebecca A. Garcia, 43, of Harwood Heights, received local adjunctions for possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia near North and Kramer at around 11:57 p.m.

State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) issued the following statement in response to Governor Rauner’s veto of Senate Bill 1, a school funding reform overhaul that is widely supported by school superintendents, educators, advocates and professional and community organizations statewide: “Once again the governor chose campaigning over our children. Using catch phrases to pit folks throughout the state against each other is not leadership, it is posturing and it hurts our entire state. The governor agreed with 90% of the school funding legislation yet vetoed it. He called negotiating an outrageous tactic. I will continue to work in a bipartisan manner to find solutions for our state as I have done in the past. I encourage Governor Rauner to do the same.”

Addison District 4 hosts BBQ

Addison School District 4’s fulltime staffers welcomed back school office personnel at the annual Welcome Back BBQ/Potluck luncheon held at Indian Trail on Friday, Aug. 4. After everyone had the chance to enjoy lunch and swap summer vacation stories, Superintendent John Langton thanked everyone for their dedication to District 4 and reminded them that the first day of school is right around the corner.

All ASD4 school offices will be open Aug. 15-17 from 9-11 a.m. and 1-3 p.m. for parents who need to complete student registration.

The first day of school for 1st – 8th grade students in District 4 is Wednesday, Aug. 23. Kindergarten students begin classes on Friday, Aug. 25. The first day of school for Early Childhood and Preschool for All students will be Tuesday, Aug. 29.

Parents are also reminded that every Monday this year will be a Late Start Monday, with classes at Indian Trail beginning at 8:25 am and classes at the elementary schools beginning at 9:30 am on Mondays.

Scheduling a later start once a week for students allows more regular meeting and professional development time for teachers.

Mid-year review shows continued strong economic indicators for DuPage County County boasts lowest unemployment and industrial vacancy rates in the region

Choose DuPage has released its 2017 Second Quarter Economic Indicators Report, showing continued success for business and industry in DuPage County during the first half of 2017. Maintaining the lowest unemployment rates in the region at just 3.3 percent, DuPage County’s skilled and educated workforce continue to present opportunities for job creators and entrepreneurs seeking to build, expand operations in the county. Data suggests DuPage County offers a business-friendly environment for a variety of industry sectors while the state and surrounding communities continue to navigate struggles with high taxes, pension challenges and a hostile

business climate.

“DuPage office vacancy rates have held steady around 16-17 percent in 2017, with industrial vacancy rates running around 5.4 percent – the lowest industrial vacancy rate in the region,” said John Carpenter, president and CEO of Choose DuPage.

“Our low taxes and operating costs, strong labor demographics, proximity to hotels and dining, as well as shopping, golf and recreational activities are just a few of the benefits our community provides to businesses considering opportunities in DuPage.”

Christine Lange, 47, of 7442 W. 56th Place, Summit, appeared in Bond Court yesterday morning where Judge Brian Jacobs set bond at $250,000 with 10% to apply. On March 23, 2017, an arrest warrant was issued for Lange. Lange was apprehended on Saturday, July 30.

Lange was employed as an account executive at Trust Company of Illinois (TCI) located in Downers Grove. In her position with TCI, she had access to customers’ bank accounts. It is alleged that from Sept.

State unsure if Illinois will receive federal flooding help ILLINOIS NEWS NETWORK

Illinois’ emergency managers say no one should expect help from the federal government once the flood waters in northern Illinois finally go down.

It is still very much a question of if Illinois will get any federal flood help, not when.

Patti Thompson, a spokeswoman for the Illinois Emergency Management Agency, said last week that most of the state’s flooded rivers are dropping, but there are still lingering pools of water. Thompson said it will take some time to assess the damage left behind.

But Thompson said there’s also the issue of whether there will be enough damage for local governments to qualify for help.

“For all of the counties that were impacted, all of their costs and the costs to the state of Illinois for the help we are providing would have to total $18.3 million.” Thompson said.

The Federal Emergency Manage-

ment Agency has per-capita thresholds for states and counties to qualify for help. Illinois must see $1.43 in damage a person before the state qualifies for help. Counties must see $3.61 per person before they qualify for federal aid.

Thompson said that’s just government costs for things like overtime, sandbags, and repairs to things like roads and bridges.

She said people who have damage to their homes have to rely almost entirely on insurance.

“Insurance is your best bet to be made whole,” Thompson said. “The important thing for people to remember is that flood insurance is not a part of your normal homeowners’ insurance policy.”

Thompson said IEMA is asking communities in Lake, Cook, McHenry, and Kane counties to start to assess their flood damage, and get some preliminary estimates to Springfield this week.

Illinois schools need at least 1,000 teachers ILLINOIS NEWS NETWORK

Students across Illinois are ready to come back to school in a few weeks, but there may not be enough teachers in some areas to greet them.

Emily Fox, the Illinois State Board of Education’s Division Administrator for Educator Effectiveness, said the state is about 1,000 teachers short to start the next school year.

“Our most recent data shows that more than 1,000 teaching positions remain unfilled,” Fox said. “I know that doesn’t sound like a lot compared to the total number of teachers in Illinois, which is about 130,000.

But these open positions are often concentrated in small schools and districts in rural areas.”

Chad Hoesman, the assistant regional superintendent in Macoupin County, said schools in central and

southern Illinois are scrambling to hire teachers ahead of the first day of school.

“From what we understand is, every single area on the list is facing a shortage,” Hoesman said. “Everything from elementary ed teachers to high school PE teachers, there’s a shortage right now.”

Hoesman said prospective teachers, if they have their teaching license and they passed their basic skill test, can essentially name the community where they want to work.

Both Hoesman and Fox blame Illinois’ teacher shortage on a number of factors, including that there are too few young teachers coming out of college. And, they say, enticing new teachers to smaller communities in rural parts of Illinois is sometimes tough.

Illinois ranked 3rd worst for breathable air ILLINOIS NEWS NETWORK

The environmental advocacy group Natural Resource Defense Council listed Illinois as the third worst in the nation for amount of population living in counties with poor breathable air.

Connecticut and Rhode Island are the only states with higher percentages.

The report shows a number of highsmog days in the Chicago and St. Louis areas are a large source of poor air quality days in Illinois.

If Washington D.C. were a state, it would have ranked No. 1 due to both heavy ragweed pollination that typically starts in the coastal southeastern portion of the country and works its way north and east and the number of

ozone action days they have in a year.

“So far this year, [Illinois] already had a dozen days where we’ve had unhealthy air quality, according to the U.S. EPA,” said Brian Urbaszewski, director of Environmental Health Programs for the Chicago-based Respiratory Health Association.

High smog levels are relatively common for urban areas in the United States. What put Illinois so high up the rankings that nearly every rural county in the state has had levels is ragweed pollen, which has sent people with hay fever scrambling for the Benadryl.

“It is one of those many plant allergens that can contribute to an asthma episode, but it’s also responsible for hay fever, which makes a lot of people miserable,” Urbaszweski said.

“This kind of reminded me of my first summer with the program where we had new kids,” he said. “We graduated pretty much everybody from last year. Everybody has new

roles and it’s pretty much a clean slate. A lot of different guys contributed in the summer. I thought we did OK this summer. Our numbers were good and we ended up playing fewer games than we have in the past.

The summer is for getting guys reps and getting a feel for what we have going into the new season. We accomplished those things.”

From the spring National Letter of Intent signing period, Angelo Duvall will continue his football career at the University of WisconsinStevens Point.

Bryan Larsen is headed to Aurora University to play baseball, while Cassidy Feddersen will compete in track and field at Elmhurst College.

Taylor Spizzirri will play softball at Aurora University, while Jenna Geraci is headed to Elmhurst College to play softball.

Noel Lopez will continue his soccer career at Division I Northern Illinois University, while Ethan Guerra and Javier Sanchez will play volleyball at Judson University in Elgin.

Patton at Drake Fenton alum Taylor Patton finished up her track and field career this season at Division I Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.

In the classroom, Patton was named to the 2016-2017 Missouri Valley Conference honor roll. To qualify for the honor roll, a studentathlete must have recorded a minimum 3.2 grade-point average for a specified term, must have been a member of an athletics team and must have a minimum of 12 hours of enrollment during the fall.

In the high jump this season, Patton tied for 10th at the MVC championships in Wichita, Kan., with a leap of 5-1 3/4. She also took 13th with a mark of 5-1 at the Musco Twilight hosted by the University of Iowa.

Earlier, she was fourth in the high jump at the Arkansas Spring Invitational and took fifth at the Central Invitational.

Indoors this season, Patton was seventh in the high jump at the MVC championships and also took seventh at the Missouri Invitational and fourth at both the Messersmith Invitational and the Holiday Inn Invitational.

Echeverria at Concordia Fenton graduate David Echeverria has two track and field seasons under his belt at Concordia University Chicago where he is a thrower.

This year at the Ted Haydon Invitational outdoor meet he took 10th in the shot put with a throw of 38-0.

During the indoor season, Echeverria was fifth in the weight throw at 36-2 3/4 and also took fourth in the shot put with a throw of 35-10.

Last year, Echeverria took 10th at the NACC outdoor championships in the hammer throw with a mark of 111-5.

Also in 2016, he was sixth in the hammer throw (93-3) and sixth in the discus (96-7) at the Lewis Twilight meet.

Pugliese at Benedictine Brady Pugliese, a 2015 graduate of Fenton, finished his sophomore season on the Benedictine University baseball team in Lisle.

“He’s our only real consistent contributor coming back on the varsity level,” said Lyons. “We have some other returners who saw a ton of time on the JV last year.”

Lyons said this year’s team will have a different look to it. “Based on what we saw in the summer, this team will have a different feel,” he said. “The tallest guy we had in the summer was 6-4. We’ll have to do some things differently to compete.”

Addison Trail hosted eight onenight shootouts on the varsity where each team played three games per night. The Blazers also headed over to District 88 neighbor Willowbrook for a shootout.

“That was our summer,” said Lyons. “We played 33 games all in all.

We were down about 15 games from the last two years.”

Lyons saw plenty of positives

heading into the 2017-2018 season.

“It’s a very coachable group,” he said. “We played to what our personnel dictated. I thought we shot well from the outside and defensively we made some positive strides and pretty much played man-to-man defense. We’re not going to rule out playing different defenses based on what will be readily apparent with our lack of size.”

Pudlo missed part of the summer due to injury. “We liked what he brought to the table when he was in there,” the coach said.

Lyons also was impressed with seniors Connor Palesch, AJ Parnell and Albert White.

“Connor shot it well all summer,” said Lyons. “He was shooting seven, eight and nine 3s a game. He is working on developing his all-around game. But he provided consistency from the arc. AJ had a rough summer. He’s a three-sport athlete with football, basketball and baseball.

His plate always was full. We took it easy on him. He showed glimpses of being a major contributor for us. Albert is the younger brother of Tyler and Taylor and his game has grown by leaps and bounds. He competes hard and he plays hard. We never worry about his effort. He grinds every time he’s out there. It was nice to see those three seniors in particular have strong summers.”

Younger players Adam Mehmeti and JT Daniels also played well.

“They both had good summers,” said Lyons.

Lyons is looking forward to the continued development of this group once the 2017-2018 season starts.

“It’s definitely going to be a mix of moving pieces early in the season,” he said. “We will find combos that will work. Our size is going to be different this year, but we will find ways to make up for it in other areas.”

Youthful Willowbrook girls basketball team has productive summer Warriors could have as many as nine juniors on roster

While the Willowbrook girls basketball team technically qualifies as young, the Warriors are far from bereft of varsity experience.

The Warriors have a trio of returning juniors-to-be in Maureen Schmid, Katelyn McCann and CeCe Lizasuain, all of whom saw time on the varsity as sophomores last year.

“They all played last year and this year they will look to be starters,” said Willowbrook coach Terry Harrell.

Harrell said overall the Warriors made progress during the recent summer season.

“We are really young,” he said.

“We’ll have as many as nine juniors on the team. We had a lot of people finding their way. This summer we saw some good player development.

It was very encouraging.”

Harrell noted the Warriors went 10-17 during the summer, not that he’s too concerned about wins and losses in June.

“I look at it as a successful summer,” he said. “The girls played hard

and played well for the most part.

They are getting accustomed to the varsity level. They got better and they were enthusiastic during our time together. They will be ready for the season.”

Harrell also was impressed with the summer participation level. “We had really good participation in the summer,” he said. “The girls were quite excited about camp.”

Willowbrook played in the Montini summer league. “Virtually everybody in the area plays there,” Harrell pointed out.

The Warriors also headed down to Bradley University in Peoria to play in an event where they went 2-2.

“We saw some typical central Illinois schools where they are good shooters and well-disciplined,” said Harrell. “Our girls fought through the games and won. They were challenged there.”

The team also performed well at a shootout at Loyola Academy where it lost to the host school by a basket. “We played pretty well there, too,” said Harrell. “We are emerging as shooters. Our shooters are led

In terms of younger players, Emma Barrington and Sydney Verdino impressed during the summer.

“Emma played at the sophomore level last year,” said Harrell. “She will be a bigger guard for us. She has some skills. She can attack the basket and has some quickness and should see a lot of time this year. Sydney would be a big guard. She’s 5-8 or 5-9. She also attacks the basket.

That’s what we are looking for. Once we spread the floor we’re looking for people who are open and can spread the floor and have that ability to attack the basket and get some scoring out of it.”

Willowbrook no longer will host a beginning-of-the-season tournament.

Instead, the Warriors will head to Marist High School for a tournament.

IC Catholic Prep football team faces same schedule in 2017 The IC Catholic Prep football team, which won the state title a year ago, won’t have to jog its memory too much when it comes to this season’s schedule.

The Knights will play the same nine opponents it did a year ago en route to the Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division title, a 14-0 record and the aforementioned state title.

In fact, IC Catholic Prep will play those same nine teams in the same order it did a year ago. The only change will be the venues.

Bowen will help attendees prepare for the 2017 fantasy drafts with detailed player breakdowns, rankings and projections. Along with a unique insider’s look at NFL playbooks and schemes, Bowen will answer questions and provide feedback to help build a championship fantasy football season, the school said.

Tickets are $100 per person and includes a buffet-style dinner and an open bar.

There also will be two raffle drawings at the event. One raffle winner will receive a custom IC Catholic Prep bags set and a second winner will receive a YETI Tundra 75 cooler. Winners must be present to win.

Proceeds from the event go toward the funding of IC Catholic Prep football and other IC Catholic Prep athletic programs.

Nybo statement on Bellock retirement from House of Representatives

State Senator Chris Nybo (R-Elmhurst) released the following statement today on the retirement announcement of Deputy Leader Patti Bellock (R-Hinsdale).

“It has been an honor to serve with my good friend Patti Bellock for the last six years. As a new House member, I sat right in front of Patti, and she was generous with her time and advice as I grew into my new position. There could not have been a better role model for what makes a good legislator than Patti Bellock. She was our very first female House Deputy Leader. She has been a strong advocate on crucial healthcare and disability issues for Illinois families, takes the lead on complex budgetary legislation, and always makes herself available for anyone who needs her time. I would like to thank Leader Bellock for her service. We will all miss her dearly.”
