State’s Attorney’s office launches military option diversion program DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin recently announced that his office had launched a new initiative aimed at helping youthful offenders charged with minor crimes who have a desire to serve in the military. The initiative will allow participants the opportunity to keep a conviction from being permanently entered on their record, which may preclude them from military service.

“I am very excited about facilitating this military option that will divert certain cases from the regular Court call and help qualified applicants with a desire to serve our country from having a criminal record,” Berlin said.

Once a month recruiters from the Navy, Marines and Army will set up a kiosk on the fourth floor of the courthouse. From there, the recruiters will be available to meet with potential participants and conduct a pre-screening to verify their abil-

In instances where the only impediment to enlistment is a minor criminal offense, the State’s Attorney’s Office will review the applicant’s case and determine if the case can be disposed of in an appropriate manner that will allow for enlistment. “The initiative is a win, win,” Berlin said. “First, it will provide participants the opportunity to avoid a criminal prosecution and begin what promises to be a more productive chapter in their lives by serving their country. In addition, offering participants a chance to avoid getting tangled up in the criminal justice system will not only reduce crime, it will allow my Assistants more time to concentrate their efforts on going after more violent criminals.”

The blood drive at Oxford Bank’s office on Addison Rd. comes after the 4th of July holiday, a time of year when the need for blood is the highest. This drive will help replenish those supplies.

LifeSource said many people may be able to donate, but think they cannot. But now, many medications are acceptable, as well as most cancer survivors and people with tattoos and diabetes can now donate. There is no upper age limit. Donors should be at least 17 years of age, 16 years of age with signed parental consent.

Donors will obtain a free Cholesterol Screening and free Blood Typing.

All blood types and all ethnicities are needed. Blood can generally be used by all patients, however for marrow it is a more defined process and the ethnicity of the patient is dependent on the donor.

Regarding the marrow drive, LifeSource, the largest blood center in Illinois, has partnered with Be the Match®, the largest registry of potential marrow donors, to reach more patients in need. Joining the bone marrow registry is simple. It involves providing a cheek swab, completing a consent form and making a commitment to patients in need.

Registration open for TCD Preschool for 2016-17 Registration for the preschool program at Technology Center of DuPage in Addison is open for the 2016-2017 school year. TCD Preschool, for children aged 3-5 years old, begins October 4, 2016 and runs through May 12, 2017 with the choice of a two-hour morning or afternoon session. The preschool is located in the Technology Center of DuPage building at 301 S. Swift Road in Addison. Registration is $20, and rates for the year vary according to the number of days per week the preschooler is enrolled.

TCD Preschool features a playbased learning environment that is also a lab school for high school juniors and seniors with a passion for teaching, early childhood education, and working with young children. These students, from among 24 DuPage area high schools, are enrolled in TCD’s Early Childhood Education & Care program as an elective part of their high school curriculum. All student teachers work in the lab preschool under the direct supervision of a highly experienced certified teacher, providing an average 3:1 preschoolerteacher ratio. TCD instructional staff members have over 50 years of combined experience in early childhood education.

The high school students are learning to plan and implement engaging and developmentally appropriate activities for preschool-

and replaced the north portion of the floor added an underdrain and sump pump to further protect from flooding. They replaced old wooden columns with new steel ones and moved the wooden gears so they could install new concrete pedestals.

Finally, they repaired the jib crane and installed a new motor and pedestal to turn the millstones.

“As a result of the DuPage Graue Mill Corporation’s support and dedication to the mill, visitors will again be able to see the gristmill operate,” said District Planning manager Kevin Horsfall.

The mill was closed to the public during the work, which also required closing the trail and underpass between the mill and York Road.

The Graue Mill and Museum is one of the area’s remaining authenticated Underground Railroad “stations” and the only operating gristmill in the Chicago area. It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in May 1975 and was recognized in 1981 as an Illinois Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the only gristmill so designated on a national or local level.

“Graue Mill is a very important part of DuPage County’s history, so we wanted to ensure it remains a beautiful cultural and educational landmark,” said Forest Preserve District of DuPage County President Joe Cantore.

Pokemon Go craze gets people out of the house

It’s all the rage and a cuttingedge craze – sweeping not only the nation, but the entire world. If you don’t have an inkling of understanding about what the verve is all about, chances are you’re aware of the buzz about Pokémon Go. And, if you’re like me, you wish you had the foresight to invest in the Nintendo Company a couple of months ago.

Pokémon Go is a new game played on mobile devices. On July 12, less than a week after it was first released, the app became the most active mobile game in the United States ever with 21 million users.

This thing is bigger than Candy Crush Saga.

Mobile apps are a dime a dozen (or often free, as is the case with Pokémon Go). Except this game is different from the others in one major way. It is location-based. You can’t play while sitting in your living room. The game requires that you go out. Into the real world. To

find and catch imaginary Pokémon (animal-like cartoon creatures) and hatch their eggs.

Makes perfect sense.

Hatching eggs requires a couple of things: a virtual incubator and walking. If kids (and kids who have already technically grown up) want to hatch an egg, they first place it in an incubator located on their phone.

Then they get moving. In the real world, in real time. Eggs take anywhere from two to 10 kilometers to hatch. For those of you not living on the metric side of things, one kilometer is a little more than half

a mile. The app keeps track of the distance you’ve traveled and hatches the egg accordingly.

And don’t even think about cheating the system. Distance counting stops when a player exceeds a certain speed, so driving in a car doesn’t count toward egg hatching.

You’ve got to hoof it.

Players travel between places like PokeStops and PokeGyms (located at various places around town) to capture and battle – all while they are outside, exercising without even realizing it. Here’s the Poké magic: they just think they are having fun.

There’s hasn’t been anything this ingenious since kick-the-can.

At least that’s this mom’s perspective. Pre-Pokémon, I was the one battling – to get my kids off the couch and away from the screen.

Now they’ve still got the screen, but at least they are off the couch.

Playing outside. With friends. Poke me.

Nothing this popular can skate

(or walk) by without some amount of criticism. People walking or biking while staring at their phone screens is like distracted driving without the car. Walking the streets after dark may put kids at risk of not being seen by motorists. And, players hunting Pokémon at places like museums, cemeteries, memorial sites and fire stations isn’t always embraced by the non-players visiting or working at those sites.

Still, I’m a proponent.

My kid hasn’t played any indoor video games in the last week. If you are the mom of a 14-year-old boy, you understand the immensity and nearly miraculous significance of that statement.

I’ve heard adults (myself included) lament nostalgically over the good old days, when summer and childhood meant getting on your bike and exploring the woods or going to a nearby park and whiling away the hours until it was time to go home for lunch, or maybe even supper if you’d eaten a big enough breakfast or packed yourself a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

My kid is doing that. His bike is broken, so he’s been riding mine – a no speed, over-sized, fender-laden mom bike if you’ve ever seen one.

He doesn’t care about his lack of fancy wheels because he is having fun. He leaves in the morning and makes a quick pit stop for lunch.

His face has developed a warm summer glow. He’s meeting up with friends and finding new ones. The game’s even taught him about kilometer conversion.

So, for now I can overlook the fact that his summer reading isn’t yet complete. We’ll get to that.

Summer should be a time of playing outside with your friends. This new game may not be perfect, but it isn’t a perfect world. I’ll take what I can get. And for this summer, at least, it’s all about the go. Pokémon Go. In our talks and in my journaling time with myself, we realized “dream house” for us, really meant “dream lifestyle”. So as we looked at properties, we asked ourselves if this felt like ease and fun (our guiding words.)

After a percussion ensemble performance in front of the park there was a chance to meet some of the park’s characters.

About 50 students, teachers, and chaperones spent one of the hottest days of the summer enjoying rides—especially water rides!

Expert on black military history to lecture at Cantigny The First Division Museum at Cantigny Park welcomes historian Anthony L. Powell on Wednesday, August 3. He will discuss the letters and ideas of Chaplain William S. Braddan, the only African-American officer from World War I, who left a first-person record of his service in France.

The free program begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Cantigny Park Visitors Center and all are invited. Parking also is complimentary for this event. (Doors open at 6:30 p.m.)

The story of William Braddan is rich and fascinating. He was born in a troop wagon of the 10th Cavalry Regiment of the U.S. Army on the

Texas frontier, his father being a sergeant with the regiment. At age 16 he enlisted with the regiment himself and eventually participated in the Great War as a member of 370th Infantry, the only unit commanded entirely by black officers.

After his military service, Braddan relocated to Chicago, becoming the pastor of Berean Baptist Church and Chaplain for the 8th Infantry Regiment of the Illinois National Guard.

Powell, of San Jose, Calif., has devoted more than 30 years to studying, teaching, collecting and writing about the American Buffalo Soldier, the nickname first applied

to 19th-century African-American enlisted men serving in the western United States. Powell curates “The Buffalo Soldier,” a national travelling exhibit, and lectures extensively on Black Military History at universities, colleges and museums.

This event is part of the First Division Museum’s Date with History, a monthly series featuring lively discussions with authors, panelists, historians and special guests.

No one has a view into our windows. Not that I roam around naked, but I could. The fireplace is not standard condo - it is floor to ceiling stone. We did a couple visits and pulled the trigger. We’re going condo.

It’s not tiny at 1750 square feet, but we’re being very selective what gets moved. The releasing of stuff is in full force. It feels good. The idea of a condo had appeal and we had looked before, but didn’t find.

When we took a breath and said let it be easy, this one appeared.

That’s our dream lifestyle motto, let it be easy. Things have been falling in to place seamlessly, with the sale of this one and the purchase of that one. Every morning I write in my journal, let it be easy.

Willowbrook summer baseball team reaches regional semifinals Warriors break 20-win barrier — second-most victories in program history

It was another banner summer season for the Willowbrook baseball team.

The Warriors advanced all the way to the semifinals of the 16-team Fenwick regional. During the summer season, there are no sectional or supersectional rounds in the state tournament. The regional winner advances to the state quarterfinals.

Willowbrook scored wins against Montini and St. Joe’s and then lost to Oak Park-River Forest in the regional semifinals.

“We had a great run,” said Willowbrook coach Vic Wisner.

The Warriors opened the summer playoffs with a 7-2 win over Montini. “It was a whole staff effort,” said Wisner. “We had some guys that had thrown over the weekend with their travel teams.”

Ryan Mintz started the game and went four innings. Will Hines, Scott Kohrt and Trevor Jaloszynski came in and threw in relief. “After Ryan, we threw a different guy each inning.

They all did a great job.”

Jon Kelso had four hits in the ballgame. “Jon hit the ball all over the place,” said Wisner.

The coach also was thrilled with his team’s defensive effort. “We made no errors,” he said. “We played great defense and overall played solid baseball.”

Catcher Dan Gusel added two hits for the winners.

Willowbrook then recorded a 2-0 victory over St. Joe’s in the second round. Jack Nilles started and pitched the first four innings. Kohrt entered in relief and threw the final three innings.

Kelso had a run-scoring triple, while Kyle Ferguson added an RBI

single that scored Kelso. “That was it for our runs,” said Wisner. “We played great defense again. We turned three double plays. We did a real good job defensively. Anytime a guy was on base, we were good.”

The Warriors then dropped a tough 4-3 decision in 11 innings to Oak Park-River Forest in the semifinals.

Alec Michaelson started the game on the mound for the Warriors.

“They got two runs on one hit in the first inning and then we started to chip away,” said Wisner. “After that first inning, Alec was dominant. He had 10 strikeouts and pitched a phenomenal game for us.”

Wisner noted the team had the bases loaded in the seventh inning with no outs and did not score. “In the eighth inning we had the bases loaded with one out and didn’t score,” he said. “I think in every inning in extra innings we had runners

in scoring position. It was a tough loss. The only error we made in the tournament, Oak Park turned into a run.”

Kelso had two hits and two RBI. Vince Ruchala, Ben Espinoza and Sam Pelsor also played key roles in Willowbrook’s offense against Oak Park-River Forest.

The Warriors finished the summer with a 20-6 record. “That’s the second-best summer record we’ve had,” said Wisner. “The summer is about finding out who we are and what our identity is. We saw that.

We will have some good pitching next spring. Alec has turned out to be a No. 1 pitcher and one of the best pitchers in our area.”

Wisner also likes the fact he has a versatile roster.

“We will be more moving parts next season,” he said. “We’re talented that way. We can move guys

all over the place and not skip a beat as if they had played the position the entire year.”

Wisner said the loss to Oak ParkRiver Forest opened plenty of eyes on the team as to what the future holds. “When they left the field after the Oak Park game there were some long faces,” he said. “But they came around. They enjoy being around each other. The team concept is very important. Someone once said is it chemistry that makes the winning or winning that makes the chemistry?

“The Oak Park loss was tough to take. It felt like it was our game.

From the second inning on we took control. We just couldn’t get the big hit. I’m proud of these kids. Guys made the most of the opportunities they were given and took advantage of the playing time. They stepped up and did a great job.”

Addison Trail boys basketball team busy during summer Blazers play close to 50 games

The Addison Trail boys basketball team sure didn’t sit around this summer.

Coach Brendan Lyons noted the team played in the neighborhood of 48 games during the recently completed summer season.

“We gained a ton of experience and we were able to play a ton of games,” said Lyons. “I think we played 48 games in the month of June. That’s more than we’ve ever played since I’ve been here. The kids had tons of opportunities and they took advantage of them. We had some nagging injuries pop up with a rolled ankle here and there. If someone missed a whole week that could have been 15 games. Kids stepped up when the opportunities were there. We had a very productive summer.”

Lyons welcomes back a trio of players who logged significant minutes on last year’s team. That group includes Jack Kalbas, Colton Noel and Michael Williams. “At times

they all demonstrated improvements in their game and the ability to carry the load for us,” the coach said.

Lyons also lauded the work of Bobby Daniels and Eric Lynch.

“Bobby and Eric are both seniors who stepped up. I would say they were our two most consistent performers. It was nice to see them take the next step with their games.”

Once again, Addison Trail took full advantage of its well-regarded facilities this summer. The Blazers hosted 12 events there. “That was a combination of a couple things,” said Lyons. “We got out of school earlier than we have before. We were out before Memorial Day and that allowed us to pick up some early summer dates. We also offered Tuesday night events and those filled up. We knew we had enough guys back and then we could possibly add some freshmen and sophomores, so we were able to handle the workload of three nights in a row for three straight weeks.”

Addison Trail also participated in the Stagg and Willowbrook shootouts. “We played 12 games between those two,” said Lyons.

After assessing the summer campaign, Lyons said the team’s offense is trending ahead of the defense.

“We know we have a lot of work to

do on the defensive end,” he said.

“We do return a little bit of size.

With Michael Williams and Desmond Carter those are kids who are 6-5 and 6-7 and will be able to do a lot of things inside. We’ll be able to do some high-low things with our offense. If we can get that inside-out game going that will help open up our perimeter offense. Right now the offense is definitely ahead of the defense. We know we have some ground to make up there.”

Lyons liked the fact his squad went up against a variety of defenses during the summer. “We saw more zone defenses this summer,” he said. “That’s not typically what we see, but it’s good to see that in the summer.”

The large quantity of games allowed Lyons ample time to assess each player on the roster. “The summer is what it is,” he said. “You don’t win any games or lose any games in the summer. We got a feel for what the team has. The summer is a good opportunity for the kids to play and get better. We accomplished that.”

Lyons noted the bar has been raised higher for the program in the wake of numerous years in a row of improvement.

“We’re coming off another double-digit win year,” he said. “We

have some guys coming back who enjoyed that success. Part of our success is going to depend on the leadership of our seniors and the example they set going forward. We’ve had classes come through here with

a high work ethic and good leadership and the younger guys emulate that. We want to continue to move forward and play for conference championships and regional titles.

They want to get to that next level.”

Fenton boys basketball team active during summer season Getting-to-know period for new coach Taft and Bison players

New Fenton boys basketball coach Chaz Taft had plenty of opportunities to become familiar with his squad this summer.

Among the Bison’s summer stops were leagues at Addison Trail and Glenbard East, as well as a shootout at Glenbard East.

“We played in a couple of summer

leagues and a couple shootouts,” Taft said. “Camp went well. It was good to get to know the kids. They understand the commitment it takes to raise the level of Fenton basketball.”

Taft takes over a team that is not short on players with program experience.

“We have seven seniors coming back from last year’s team,” he said.

“That helped. Everybody was pretty close in camp. We have a pretty tightknit group here. I was impressed with the way they like to play with each other and have fun with each other. That helps a lot when you are talking about things such as continu-

Elmhurst College baseball team earns academic honor

The Elmhurst College baseball team is the recipient of the American Baseball Coaches Association Team Academic Excellence Award.

Elmhurst was one of 32 NCAA Division III teams to earn the inaugural award from ABCA. In order to qualify for the award, teams were required to maintain a minimum 3.0 grade-point average for the 2015-

2016 academic year.

Elmhurst was one of two schools from the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin to earn the award. The Bluejays finished the season with 21 wins.

On a larger scale, more than 175 Elmhurst College student-athletes earned academic all-conference honors from CCIW in 2015-2016.

Six student-athletes were honored with the Jack Swartz Academic AllConference Award. Each member school selects one male and one female athlete from each season for the Swartz honor. A 3.50 GPA is required for the honor.

Swartz award-winners for Elmhurst this past school year included Andy Warsen (football), Shannon Burns (volleyball), Kenny Payonk (men’s basketball), Claire Monroe

(women’s basketball), Greg Struck (baseball) and Brianna Thompson (softball).

Male Athlete of the Year Wrestlers Jimmy Nehls and Blake Santi were selected as Elmhurst College’s co-male athletes of the year for the 2015-2016 season.

Both wrestlers finished the season as CCIW champions and NCAA All-Americans in helping the Bluejays win a CCIW title and earn a top10 national finish.

Nehls, a senior, was the national runner-up at 141 pounds at the NCAA Division III championships.

He finished 31-5 overall and won CCIW and NCAA regional titles.

He finished 4-1 at nationals and also was named CCIW’s most outstanding wrestler.

Santi finished his senior season

with a 26-3 record at 149 pounds. He captured titles at the UW-Parkside Open, the CCIW championships and the NCAA Midwest Regional. Santi went 4-2 at the NCAA Division III championships and took home fifthplace and All-American honors. He closed out his career with a 16-1 technical fall win in the fifth-place match.

Female Athlete of the Year Women’s volleyball player Hannah Nimrick was named the Elmhurst College female athlete of the year.

Nimrick, a junior setter this past season, helped Elmhurst to a 24-win season and a berth in the NCAA Division III tournament for the fifth year in a row.

Nimrick also had 67 blocks, ranking her third on the team. She registered nine triple doubles (double-digit stat totals in three categories), which ranked among the national leaders.

She is the first Elmhurst College setter to be named an All-American since the 2005 season.

Nimrick ranks fifth all-time in career attacking percentage (.347) and her 2,985 assists ranks fourth in program history, while her 8.0 digs per set average ranks second in Elmhurst history.

Taft, a graduate of Fenton, also is looking to the future of the program.

“We want to start a feeder basketball program with the younger kids,” he said. “When I played at Fenton there was a feeder system.

We want to get these kids excited about basketball.”

Taft noted the program ended the summer session on a high note with a special gathering for all the players.

“At the end of camp we had a barbeque for the kids,” he said. “That was my way of saying you busted it in the summer. They did a great job.

We cooked hot dogs and hamburgers for them. It was our way of saying thank-you. I’m proud of how the kids have embraced things already.”

Taft said that closeness will come in handy with the team’s new manto-man defensive strategy. “The man-to-man is new to everybody,” he said. “How hard you play shows a lot in this defense. If you don’t help out and play the style we play, it really exposes you to when you need to help a teammate out. They have to be there for each other on defense and have to want to play for their teammates. Things such as help recovery and help on the help line are the biggest transitions with the game and what we are teaching on the defensive end of the floor.”

“Baseball was the first sport I learned about and watched, and I just fell in love.”

The duo met at Illinois Media School in Lombard, where they produce “Northside Manner.” They coordinate all aspects of the show, including writing the content and script, filming, editing, prep and maintaining their website and social media outlets. Allen said they researched social media platforms for the Cubs and realized there was an opportunity for growth. They began filming “Northside Manner” every Friday and developed a Twitter and Facebook presence, as well as a website. Their posts have even received feedback from several Cubs players and their wives.

Allen and Garcia said the ultimate goal of hosting the show is to save up enough money from sponsorships to buy their own studio and work for the Cubs. But their focus remains on entertaining and educating their viewers.

“We hope our fans gain a better understanding of who the Cubs are through our show and social media outlets,” Allen said. “A lot of them don’t live in Illinois, so we are sometimes the only source they have for Cubs news.”

Willowbrook alumnus Michael Allen (class of 2014) and Addison Trail alumna Gabriella Garcia (class of 2009) have more in common than graduating from the same high school district. They also are both diehard Cubs fans – “born and raised.”

And they’ve taken their passion to the next level – in July 2015, they launched a YouTube show called “Northside Manner.” Allen and Garcia described the show as upbeat and interactive and said they constantly strive to come up with new and fresh ideas for segments – as long as the topics are focused on all things Cubs, of course.

“Just being around baseball and seeing the players – from little kids all the way to the professional teams – you see that all levels have one thing in common – everyone is smiling and having fun with the sport,” Allen said. “That’s what I love.”

Allen grew up playing on little league and youth baseball teams and later served as an umpire. Garcia played softball and has fond memories of watching baseball on TV with her dad.

“My dad taught me everything I know about sports,” Garcia said.

FURTHER, a copy of this Ordinance shall be published in The Independent within 15 days after the date of enactment in the form provided by law.

FURTHER, this Ordinance shall be in full force and effect from and after its enactment as provided by law.
