Kate Drury likely didn’t think she’d wake up one day and find that her then-8-year-old son Charlie had seemingly become a different person; nor would she have known it was the beginning of a long journey that would end up in Springfield with a law partially named after him.

But, that’s where things are headed after a bill named Charlie’s Law, HB 2721, was slated to be signed by Gov. Bruce Rauner—at Drury’s Lombard home—on Tuesday, July 18.

The bill essentially states that individual and group insurance plans will be required to offer coverage for treatments of an illness referred to as PANDAS/PANS. Charlie’s own journey began with a strep throat in November 2012 and ended up—after many doctor visits—with a diagnosis of pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococci infections, or PANDAS. Symptoms of PANDAS vary but can include developing obsessive compulsive disorders, tics, an aversion to scents, phobias, behavioral aggression and age regression, to name a few.

Drury explained for “Out and About” back in 2013 how she sought psychiatric help for her son, but the medications increased his symptoms.

She then took Charlie to a doctor who discovered her son’s strep level was “off the charts.”

That doctor connected Drury with a local physician who happened to be an expert on PANDAS, and while a

‘Jumpstart Your Health’ helps head off diabetes for those at high risk When Doris Courts, 78, was diagnosed with pre-diabetes several years ago, she was determined to do all she could to avoid full-blown diabetes.

She had seen too many of her family members and acquaintances with the disease suffer serious complications.

The retired reading teacher started the battle by focusing on weight loss.

She used Weight Watchers and other weight management programs. She lost 22 pounds through those efforts, but did not improve her A1C level, a test used to diagnose diabetes and pre-diabetes.

In early spring 2016, Courts visited the Diabetes Learning Center at Elmhurst Hospital in search of programs that might help.

“I was able to get into the Center’s Jumpstart Your Health program,” Courts said.

Jumpstart Your Health is a free, one-year program for adults who

have prediabetes or risk factors for diabetes, such as a family history of the disease, high cholesterol or blood pressure, excess weight, or a history of gestaDoris Courts tional diabetes.

Registered dietitian Julie Sanfilippo, a lifestyle coach with the Center, leads the Jumpstart program, which follows guidelines of the Centers for Disease Control.

“Our goal is to help people reduce the risk of developing diabetes,” said Sanfilippo. “Research suggests that lifestyle changes are twice as effective as medications in preventing diabetes. That’s why we focus on nutrition, exercise, behavior modification and stress management.”

Sanfilippo says typical goals for individual group members might be to lose 5 to 7 percent of their weight and complete 150 minutes of moderate exercise each week.

Before joining Jumpstart, Courts had cut way back on her water aerobics and gym workouts. Once in Jumpstart, she committed to becoming more active again. Courts created her own at-home exercise program that she follows diligently five days a week.

Courts said, “I do an hour on the treadmill and 40 minutes of exercises based on the physical therapy routines I’d been given.”

Courts also faithfully attended her Jumpstart sessions, which were held at the Edward-Elmhurst Health Center in Lombard. Meetings were held weekly for the first three months, every two weeks for the second three months, and monthly for the last

half-year.

“The program led to a complete lifestyle change for me,” said Courts.

“Julie (Sanfilippo) is excellent and very nice. She taught us how to make healthy food choices and control portions. She also stressed the importance of tracking what we’d eaten. That included whether we stayed within the allowance of fat grams she’d given each of us. We tracked our exercise, too. We were given a pedometer and encouraged to walk 10,000 steps a day.”

How did Courts stay motivated?

“Being part of a group makes you feel more accountable,” she said.

“There was a lot of sharing of ideas, personal experiences and recipes.

Everyone was cordial, and several even brought in samples of food they thought the others would like.”

Courts is happy to report that she

met her personal goals.

“I’m no longer classified as pre-diabetic. My A1C is within the normal range,” Courts said. “My other numbers are good, too. Cholesterol is down 25 points, glucose is down and my sed rate (a measure of inflammation in the body) dropped. I also lost 21 pounds. I feel so much better.”

As a next step, she joined a support group of other Jumpstart graduates that will meet every two months at Elmhurst Hospital.

The Jumpstart Your Health program is funded by grants from the Lions Club International Foundation – in conjunction with the local Elmhurst Lions Club and Lions District 1J – and the Elmhurst Memorial Hospital Foundation.

Cronin remarks on County Board member named to State Senate

County Board Chairman Dan Cronin released the following statement about County Board member John Curran being named to the State Senate: “I would like to congratulate County Board Vice Chairman John Curran on being named to fill Christine Radagno’s vacant State Senate seat. ATHS alumna named All-American at Junior National Championship

Addison Trail alumna Sarah Petrbok (class of 2017) recently received All-American recognition during the 2017 AAU Girls Junior National Volleyball Championships.

That event took place from June 14 to 26 in Orlando, Fla. Petrbok said to earn that honor, she had to be selected by the coaches through a vote that was based on her performance throughout the season and at the National Championships. She also had to place in her age division at Nationals.

“It’s very humbling,” Petrbok said of being named as an All-American. “Participating in a travel sport requires a lot of time, and you have to be very committed. There’s a lot of sacrifice, as you sometimes have to miss out on other high school experiences, so it’s an amazing feeling to know all that hard work has paid off and others have noticed that dedication as well.”

Petrbok began playing volleyball when she was in sixth grade

and was a four-year member of the Addison Trail Varsity Girls Volleyball Team. She also plays for Sports Performance Volleyball Club in Aurora, which is a travel team that competes throughout the U.S. “What I love about the sport of volleyball is the team aspect – you need all six people on the court,” Petrbok said. “Each position needs to work together to make a play happen.”

In the fall, Petrbok will join the Women’s Volleyball Team at Minnesota State University Moorhead.

She said her experience at Addison Trail has prepared her for the college level.

“Our team started off struggling – we didn’t really have any leaders to guide the program,” Petrbok said. “My class came together to help build the program up and find a path to success. I’ve been through the lows and the highs, and I feel prepared for what’s next. From the day I started playing volleyball, I fell in love with the sport – and I can’t imagine my life without it.”

St. Joseph Church presents 4th annual festival Aug. 5-6 On the weekend of Aug. 5-6, St. Joseph Catholic Church at 330 E. Fullerton Ave., will host its 4th annual free festival known as Taste of St. Joseph. Kids will enjoy carnival rides, games, pony and camel rides, as well as things for the whole family like live music, cold beer, and food items like hamburgers, hot dogs, tacos, burritos, Italian beef sandwiches, pizza, nachos and much more.

Admission is free, but some activi-

District 4 food pantry distribution coming Aug. 7 There will be a Northern Illinois Food Bank Mobile Pantry food distribution on Monday, Aug. 7 from 10 a.m. – 12 noon at Indian Trail Junior High School, 222 N. Kennedy Drive. Food is free to low-income families who are in need and it will be distributed on a first-come, first-

served basis while supplies last.

Visitors to the pantry are asked to bring bags or boxes for packaging their food. This mobile food pantry is being sponsored by Money Managers Financial Group in partnership with the Addison Early Childhood Collaborative.

ACA plans annual Starving Artist Sale The Addison Center for the Arts is holding its Second Annual Starving Artist Sale from Wednesday, August 2 through Saturday, August 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. It will take place at the Addison Center for the Arts Gallery, 213 N. Lombard Road, (Addison Trail High School... door 4). Available will be framed/ unframed original artwork, jewelry, pottery, art supplies books and other odds and ends.

County Health Department: Use caution around floodwaters

Recent heavy rains caused flooding in areas of DuPage County and the Health Department is cautioning residents to try to avoid flood water because it may be contaminated.

Executive Director Karen Ayala says, “It’s important to protect yourself and your family because floodwater may look harmless, but could be a mixture of many things.”

The ground is saturated in many areas which can cause septic systems to fail, and waste water to mix with surface and ground water.

Floodwaters can contain bacteria, fecal material, viruses, and other organisms that may cause disease.

If you will be cleaning, volunteering, or around

floodwaters for any reason, take precautions to avoid injury and possible infections: Wear protective clothing, gloves, long pants, long sleeves and boots if you must be around floodwater to clean or volunteer.

If you have a cut or injury where the skin is broken and has been exposed to flood water, contact your health care provider about the need for a tetanus shot or other treatment.

Be sure to apply insect repellent containing DEET when outdoors to protect against mosquitoes and ticks.

See your doctor if you have a fever or rash after a tick bite.

Addison July 20 • Kevin Lopez, 18, of Palatine, was charged with possession of cannabis subsequent to a traffic stop near Park and Dale at around 11:56 p.m.

• General Willis, 51, of Milwaukee, was charged with deceptive practice in the 700 block of Annoreno at around 12:21 p.m. Police said Willis was charged after he purchased a vehicle on Dec. 15, 2016 with a fraudulent check.

• A 31-year-old Chicago woman was charged with domestic battery and aggravated assault in the 40 block of Green Oaks at around 9:31 a.m. Police said the suspect struck a victim in the face with her hand, and while holding a knife, swung her arm and cut the victim’s forearm.

July 17 Pebbles McCarthey-Williams, 22, of Carol Stream, was charged with retail theft at a store in the 1000 block of W. Rohlwing Road at around 5:30 p.m. Police said McCarthey-Williams was observed concealing items and leaving the story without paying for the items.

Loss prevention confronted McCarthey-Williams to which she refused to respond back to the store and fled the scene, according to police. On July 12, a warrant was issued for her arrest. On July 20, police said McCarthey-Williams turned herself into the Addison Police Department.

July 16 A 31-year-old Addison man was charged with domestic battery and interfering with the reporting of domestic violence in the 700 block of Briar Hill Lane at around 10:31 a.m. Police said the suspect slapped, choked, kicked and pulled the victim’s hair, pushed her to the ground and smacked the phone out of the victim’s hand, and then stomped on her face and head.

July 15 • Police said an officer responded to the Lombard Police Department to transport Lizbeth Medrano, 26, of Glen Ellyn, to the Addison Police Department for processing of an original warrant for failure to give aid or information from a traffic accident.

Hospital offers eight options for a more comfortable labor Many expectant moms worry about how they will cope with labor pain. Images on television and in movies don’t help ease those concerns.

“When you start to panic about how you will actually get this baby out of you, remind yourself that your body was made to grow and birth a baby,” said Lisa Chorzempa-Schainis, MD, an obstetrician-gynecologist (OB-GYN) with Elmhurst Memorial Medical Group. “It’s a natural process that women have been doing for centuries.”

Dr. Chorzempa-Schainis recommends being proactive to know what to expect during labor, including reading, attending childbirth classes and/or going on a hospital tour. She says the next step is to pick the right place to have your baby.

“Choose a hospital that meets your needs, with a balance of expertise and amenities, such as private birthing suites, and pain relief and alternative comfort measures, as well as prompt access to anesthesia services, if necessary,” she said.

Most importantly, plan to have someone there for support. Continuous emotional and physical support during labor, such as by a spouse or partner, family member, friend or doula, is associated with improved outcomes.

In addition, a certified nurse midwife (CNM) can offer significant benefits for expectant moms who want a positive, comfortable experience, according to Mary Saracco, CNM, MM, APN, Elmhurst Clinic.

“As advanced practice nurses, CNMs are trained and licensed in ways to help laboring women have a healthy birth using their own natural physiology, while avoiding unnecessary procedures that may interfere with that process,” said Saracco.

When the big day arrives, there are a number of ways — natural and pharmacological — to reduce pain and improve the labor and delivery experience: 1. Use attention-focused and relaxation techniques. Rhythmic breathing can help release tension and distract you from pain. You may also find comfort during and between contractions from a gentle massage on your hands, feet, shoulders or back, acupressure, music, aromatherapy and/or hypnotherapy.

2. Use warm and cold packs. Try a warm gel pack, hot moist towel or warm blanket in your low abdomen, low back or shoulders. The application of cold, such as an ice pack, frozen gel pack or cold moist cloth, can also help to reduce pain.

3. Take a shower or bath. Bathing in warm water during labor is a great way to relax and help relieve pain. Sit on a stool and direct a handheld showerhead on your front or back. Through its midwives, Elmhurst Hospital offers hydrotherapy or warm water immersion for labor and birth.

4. Try giving birth in alternative positions. It may be more comfortable and less painful for you to give birth in upright or side-lying positions rather than on your back. You may consider pushing when squatting, on your hands and knees, or

5. Move around and change positions. Moving during labor has been found to enhance comfort and reduce pain. It can also help labor progress by gently moving the baby through the birth canal. Try walking, rocking, swaying, kneeling over a birthing ball or sitting backward in a chair.

6. Consider nitrous oxide. Unlike systemic drugs that can cause unwanted effects, nitrous oxide (a tasteless, odorless gas inhaled through a mask) is considered safe to use during labor and can provide relief from pain and anxiety. It also has a quick onset and quickly exits both the mother’s and baby’s system.

While alternative comfort measures are encouraged, Elmhurst Hospital is the first in DuPage County to offer this pain relief option for women in labor, and it has been adopted by both the hospital’s OB-GYNs and the Elmhurst Clinic midwives.

7. Try other pain medications.

Some women prefer opioids to “take the edge off” of the pain instead of an epidural, since this option doesn’t interfere with the ability to push during labor. Pain medication can be given as a shot, intravenously (IV) or through a patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) pump, usually during the early stages of labor to avoid side effects for both mother and baby.

8. Choose an epidural. Epidural anesthesia is used by more than half of women giving birth. While it is the most effective form of pain relief for labor (as it “numbs” pain), an epidural has some disadvantages.

Talk with your physician to determine if this option is right for you.

Elmhurst Hospital Emergency Department to expand Construction of $600,000 project begins in August

Elmhurst Hospital is beginning a renovation and expansion project that will increase the size of its Emergency Department (ED) from 31 to 39 rooms. The new rooms will be built in what is currently the Centralized Admissions Area, a unit adjacent to the ED. Construction will start in August and is targeted for completion in the fall.

The additional rooms are needed because of a dramatic increase in the number of patients seeking treatment in the ED. In calendar year (CY) 2012, its first full year of operation following the opening of the new Elmhurst Hospital in 2011, the ED had 51,190 patient visits. In CY 2016, 65,405 patients were treated in the ED, a 28 percent increase over 2012. The ED was originally designed to handle an annual volume of 55,000 patients.

“The surge in volume has resulted in overcrowding and an increase in wait times,” said Adam Johnson, Service Line Director, Emergency Medicine & Urgent Care Services. “It became very apparent that we needed more space to handle the number of patients coming through the ED.” The $600,000 project is funded by the Elmhurst Memorial Hospital (EMH) Foundation.

School Districts 4, 45, 48 and 88 hold STEM Camp Cibulka: Program ‘helps students be college and career ready’

From June 19 to 30, nearly 90 students participated in a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Camp at Willowbrook.

During the camp, students learned how to code apps for android devices, as well as how to program robots. The event was led by Addison Trail science teacher Matt Lindgren, in partnership with LearnTEC, Inc. District 88 Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment Adam Cibulka said the districts are

thrilled to offer this experience.

“Providing a STEM Camp is a great opportunity for students to really dive into an area in which they’re interested,” Cibulka said.

“In the future, we hope to host more programs like this. We know this is the first step of many in terms of expanding this field to where we can engage students in this kind of next generation of technology, as well as the next generation of skills they need to be successful in these careers. We know these fields are in high demand in the workforce, and this camp aligns directly with our mission to help students be college and career ready.”

“The PANDAS moms are a force to be reckoned with,” the representative said of Drury and Nawara, adding that at least three families have come forward children needing treatment.

Rep. Peter Breen (R-Lombard) also contributed to the passage of HB 2721, saying he got involved this past March with encouragement from his wife, Margie.

He remembers there being some lingering opposition, and helped convince those legislators through “respectful contention” that the insurance companies were wrong not to cover IVIG treatments.

“It was the right thing to do,” Breen added.

Cullerton also pointed out how “it takes the federal government to set in motion a ‘standard of care,’ ” for which he and other legislators didn’t want to wait.

Now, the senator said proudly, other states are beginning to look to Illinois as a model for how to get such a treatment law enacted, and he credits Drury and Nawara for their tenacity.

They were “absolutely fantastic with sitting down with legislators from their home offices,” he praised, and said of his constituent, “I’m incredibly proud of the work Kate did.”

Drury is modest about her efforts, saying she did what any parent would do, including testifying in

Springfield a number of times.

“They got to hear our stories,” she added.

Besides Illinois families, “It’s really going to help other states,” Drury said, adding that the advocacy organization is getting calls from families looking for help.

In the meantime, “We’re going to move forward with education,” Drury said, for medical, therapeutic and educational professionals.

She said that while the outcome is rewarding for families and children, and that going to Springfield has been “empowering,” at the same time, “It’s so bittersweet.”

That is, Drury continued, other children affected by PANDAS/ PANS, and who did not get the diagnosis or treatment right away, have had to suffer while waiting for the legislation to pass.

“Now these kids are going to be able to have the tools,” she added.

As for Charlie, his mom says he remembers “bits and pieces” about his illness, such as being scared, not being able to eat or touch certain things, and the headaches.

At the same time, “Charlie’s excited; he’s proud,” Drury said.

The bottom line, though, for Drury, is, “These children are finally going to be recognized ... get their lives back.”

28-day regimen of Augmentin provided improvement, Charlie was not fully healed.

When it was suggested that Charlie be given a treatment known as IVIG, or intravenous immunoglobulin, which replaces blood antibodies and is used therapeutically to treat other illnesses, the Drurys found out their insurance company would not cover any of the cost—$12,000 for one treatment.

While fundraisers helped raise money to help offset some of the family’s medical costs, Drury decided that it was worth fighting to get the treatment covered, so other families didn’t have to go through her experience.

She learned about Wendy Nawara—also with a son named Charlie who was diagnosed with PANDAS—who had formed a private parent group.

They and some others then launched a non-profit organization called PANDAS/PANS Advocacy, which led to their approaching local government, through Rep. Deb Conroy (D-Villa Park) and Sen. Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) to hopefully get legislation passed to provide insurance coverage for IVIG treatments.

Cullerton recalled how the women went to Springfield campaigning for advocacy and awareness of PANDAS and PANS, or pediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome.

He and Conroy listened, Cullerton continued, and realized, “The need was there to get insurance coverage.”

First came a task force/advisory council to educate and inform, the senator recounted, which “kept bringing more people into the fold,” from insurance company representatives to doctors and other health professionals, and others affected by the illness.

Drury remembers experiencing resistance from both the medical and insurance fields, and through experience, learned how to get the necessary documentation and facts to combat the skepticism.

Cullerton said the idea was not to rush into legislation requiring that insurance companies pay for IVIG treatment, but to educate those involved—about diagnosing PANDAS early on to take a proactive approach, and on how there is scientific evidence that IVIG therapy works on PANDAS patients.

Doctors, he continued, became proponents of the treatment and “jumped on board” to help convince the insurance companies that the IVIG treatment was successful, and “that helped immensely.”

Drury related how it took some two months for her son to get the right diagnosis, after Charlie’s doctor at first did not believe PANDAS existed, especially after a follow-up

strep test came up negative.

However, Drury continued, by then the antibodies were already doing damage to his brain. So, with Charlie’s Law, not only will parents be able to get coverage for IVIG treatments, but PANDAS/PANS will be recognized as a bona fide illness.

For instance, Charlie’s doctor, who initially didn’t believe in PANDAS/PANS, ended up becoming a supporter, she related.

Charlie’s mom credits that turnaround for helping prevent a repeat of the illness after her other son Jack, then 4, developed symptoms—just weeks after Charlie’s IVIG treatment—that she recognized right away.

Early intervention with antibiotics, Drury emphasized, worked so that Jack did not require IVIG treatment.

After collaborating with such entities as the National Institutes of Health to work on developing standards of care, the medical profession will “have it in their toolbox,” Drury emphasized.

Four years may seem like a long time to work on enacting legislation, Cullerton acknowledged, but “we wanted to make sure we had a good, solid plan from the beginning.”

That plan, which will be called Charlie’s Law — for both Charlies —passed in both the House and Senate, said the senator, adding that there was “incredible bipartisan support.”

Conroy agreed, echoing how it was “unanimously supported by both parties in both chambers.”

She later commented, “It was a

The Addison Trail boys soccer program accumulated quite the win total during the recent summer season.

The Blazers’ varsity team finished summer league play with a 9-1 record.

Addison Trail lost 1-0 to York in its final summer league team.

The Addison Trail “Reserves” squad won back-to-back summer league titles after defeating York in penalty kicks. The “Reserves” team finished with an 8-1-1 record.

Addison Trail announces fall sports practice schedule The Addison Trail athletics department has released start dates, times and locations for fall sports teams.

Boys and girls’ cross country (all levels) will initially meet Aug. 9-11 (Wednesday and Thursday) from 7-9 a.m., at Door 5 by the field house.

From Aug. 14 on, athletes will meet at Door 5 with practice going from 3:305:30 p.m.

All levels of boys golf will meet Monday Aug. 7 at 7 a.m. at Salt Creek Golf Club in Wood Dale. On Tuesday, Aug. 8 golfers will meet at 8 a.m., at Salt Creek and a schedule will be given out for the season on Wednesday, Aug. 9.

Sophomore boys soccer players will meet Aug. 9-11 (Wednesday through Friday) from 9-11 a.m. on the east turf. On Saturday, Aug. 12 they will meet from 9-11 a.m., in the stadium and from Aug. 14 on (Monday through Friday) sophomores will meet from 3:30-5:30 p.m., at Blazer Park.

From Aug. 14 on (Monday through Friday), swimmers will meet from 4-6:15 p.m., at the Family Aquatic Center.

All levels of girls tennis will meet Aug. 9-11 (Wednesday through Friday) from 9-11 a.m., on the school tennis courts. From Aug. 14 on, (Mon. through Fri.), players will meet from 3:30-5:30 p.m., on the tennis courts.

Girls volleyball players either on the sophomore team or varsity team will meet Aug. 9-10 (Wednesday and Thursday) from 7:30-9:30 a.m. and from 10 a.m.-noon in the main gym.

On Friday, Aug. 11, players will meet at 10:30 a.m., in the main gym. On Aug. 14-15 (Monday and Tuesday), players will meet from 2-4:30 p.m., in the main gym and field house. And from Aug. 16 on, (Wednesday on forward), players will meet from 3:305:30 p.m., in the main gym.

Football practice schedule The Addison Trail football teams start double-session practice Aug. 7.

The varsity and sophomore team schedule for Aug. 7-11 and Aug. 1418 includes the training room opening at 4 p.m., a team meeting at 4:30 p.m., specialties practice period starting at 5:30 p.m., and then practice going from 6-9 p.m.

For Aug. 12 and 19, the training room opens at 8 a.m. A team meeting takes place at 8:30 a.m. Specialties period begins at 9:30 a.m. Practice then runs form 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

For freshmen players, the schedule from Aug. 7-11 and Aug. 14-18 includes the training room opening at 3 p.m. A team meeting takes place at 3:30 p.m., and practice goes from 4-8 p.m.

On Aug. 12 and 19, the training room opens at 7 a.m. A team meeting is scheduled for 7:30 a.m., and practice runs from 8 a.m. to noon.

Players must participate in 12 days of practice, per IHSA rule, in order to compete in the first game. Consent forms and physicals also must on record in order for players to participate.

Due to the fall BBQ on Aug. 9, practice times are to-be-announced.

Addison Trail reminds everyone players must park in the student lot and enter and exit at Door 5, which is the entrance by the circular drive and field house.

Willowbrook baseball team puts a wrap on summer season

The Willowbrook summer baseball team concluded its season with an 11-7 record.

After receiving a first-round bye in the regional portion of the state summer tournament, the Warriors dropped a 3-1 decision to Oak ParkRiver Forest in the second round of the regional.

“It was a great game,” said Willowbrook coach Vic Wisner. “Ryan Mintz was the starting pitcher and gave up only three hits. We had some opportunities to score runs, but didn’t. It was tough.”

Willowbrook led the game 1-0 heading into the sixth innings. “We made an error, they had a couple of hits and the next thing you know it’s three runs,” said Wisner.

Wisner tipped his hat to Mintz for his efforts on the mound.

“Ryan pitched great,” the coach said.

Jeremy Conforti drove in Willowbrook’s only run of the contest.

“We didn’t put the ball in play enough to generate offense,” said Wisner.

“We had our chances with some walks and errors, but we couldn’t get the big hit.”

Wisner labeled the summer a success when looking at the big picture.

“In the summer you really try to build chemistry and see what you have for next year,” he said. “We had an outstanding year, but we lost a ton of guys. We’re trying to find out who fits where and find chemistry as a team.

We did that for the most part here in the summer. It was a good summer.”

Willowbrook again will be loaded on the mound with Mintz, Jack Nilles, Jack Hines and Vince Ruchala all returning with significant varsity pitching experience.

“Our pitching is going to be very good again. We have guys who are throwing well,” said Wisner. “We have to find out if some of these younger guys can step up and fill in some holes both pitching-wise and offensively.”

Wisner said seniors Dan Gusel and Mason Kamp, along with juniors Mintz, Nilles and Hines have been named team captains for the 2018 season. The coaching staff selected the captains.

“It’s a big responsibility,” said Wisner. “We put a lot on our captains’ shoulders. We want them to develop leadership skills. We give them a lot of responsibility with the things they have to do in our program. Being named a captain here is a big deal. The coaches vote on it and you have to earn it. It’s a nice honor. These guys have worked hard to get it.”

Wisner also saw positives from the likes of Conforti at third base and multi-sport athlete Scott Tumilty out in center field.

“Jeremy had a good summer for us,” said Wisner. “Scott is another guy who jumped out at us and locked down a position. He’s a good competitor.

We were looking for someone to replace Ben Espinoza in center and lead off and Scott will do that for us.”

Overall, Wisner likes how things are coming into place for the 2018 spring season.

“We feel pretty good about where we are headed,” he said.

Fenton boys basketball team completes busy summer Coach Taft likes progress program is making

The Fenton boys basketball team made the most of its allotted summer contact days.

The Bison hosted several events on Wednesday nights while also playing in shootouts at Montini, Ridgewood, Glenbard East and

Maine East.

“We played a lot of games,” said Fenton coach Chaz Taft. “We hosted our own stuff on Wednesday nights and overall played about 40 games.”

Taft liked the team’s work ethic throughout the summer. “I liked how we came in every day and we worked hard,” he said. “We would go two hours for team camp and then sometimes go and play three games at night. The guys did a really good job with that especially with having some younger guys with us.”

Taft said he saw progress on both

the offensive and defensive ends.

“It was kind of even,” he said. “We had some good stretches where we played teams tough. We got out there and blended in a mix of guys and tried to find out if different guys could play in different roles whether they were starting a game or coming off the bench. We put them in different roles and looked at different lineups. We found out what works.”

In his second year as Fenton’s coach, Taft is seeing the program take the steps forward he was hoping for.

“We are on our way,” he said.

“It’s something we are building every day. We’re building a culture every day and it’s something we have to make sure we are instilling. It’s always been at the forefront with us. It’s something we work on every day.”

Taft declared the summer as an overall success.

“We all came together as a team and a program,” he said. “We have a bunch of hard-working guys who are pulling for each other. In the summer to play that many games

you are going to have some ups and downs. Guys are doing different sports and coming over from football and baseball so we were working with a different mix of kids on different days. It was nice to see that everybody had a good summer.”

And now Taft turns his attention to the 2017-2018 season.

“I like the group we have. I like the younger guys and the returning guys,” he said. “We have a good mix of guys. I’m excited about this coming season. I wish it would start today. I’m looking forward to it.”

Elmhurst American Legion baseball team concludes season

The Elmhurst American Legion Post 187 baseball team saw its season come to an end at the recent 2nd Division tournament hosted by Barrington.

Post 187, which was the runner-up at the 11th District tournament and earned a spot in the Division tournament, opened play with an 11-1 loss to Barrington Post 158.

Elmhurst jumped out to a brief 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning only to have Barrington counter with two runs in the bottom of the first.

Barrington scored two more in the bottom of the third, four in the bottom of the fourth and then single runs in the fifth sixth and eighth innings to enact the 10-run rule.

Barrington had 13 hits in the contest. Elmhurst was limited to four hits.

Neither team made a fielding error.

Fenton’s Alejandro Orosco had a hit. York’s Nick Lee also had a hit and drove in Elmhurst’s only run. York’s Tamaine Durr also had a hit and Brendan Connell had a hit and scored Elmhurst’s only run.

Of Elmhurst’s four hits, three went for extra bases. Lee had a double, while Orosco and Durr each had a triple. Connell stole a base.

Elmhurst struck out 13 times against Barrington pitching.

In that Elmhurst first inning, Connell singled to right. After two outs and Connell still at first, Lee doubled to center, scoring Connell.

Orosco pitched the first 4 1/3 innings and struck out two. IC Catholic Prep product Austin Reed pitched the final three innings and recorded a strikeout.

Elmhurst then forfeited its consolation bracket game to Elgin Post 57 and was eliminated from the double-elimination tournament.

“We had two players with injuries and a few others were sick who played in the extreme heat in the game against Barrington and some others had prescheduled vacations,” noted Post 187 coach Mike Biondo.

Post 187, after a multi-year hiatus from American Legion baseball, finished the season with a 13-10 record.

“For the first year I was pleased with how our season went,” said Biondo. “We will have players coming back next year who understand the competitiveness of American Legion baseball and the high level of play that must be brought to their game every day.”

Post 187 held a team awards banquet Tuesday at the Elmhurst American Legion hall. There, five team awards were given out for MVP, pitcher of the year, offensive player of the year, defensive player of the year and a hustle award. The Independent will have those winners in next week’s edition.

Biondo noted the Elmhurst Legion baseball program will expand next year with the addition of a 17U junior Legion team in addition to the traditional 19U senior Legion squad.

Tryouts for the 17U junior Legion team will be held in late August, Biondo noted.
