Students in Addison School District 4 will be experiencing increased exposure to instrumental music this year thanks to two grants from the JCS Fund of the DuPage Foundation. Stone School general music teacher Kristine Brokos and Indian Trail Junior High School orchestra teacher Diane Morrill applied for the JCS Fund grants in spring when they worked to develop a wish list of instructional materials and experiences that could enhance the district’s music education program. A seven-year grant in the amount of $100,000 has been awarded to ASD4’s elementary schools, with Addison’s younger students reaping the benefits of a $50,000 donation the first year. With this funding, students at seven elementary schools and the Addison Early Learning Center will be scheduled to participate in Salt Creek Ballet’s Orchestra Outreach Program. This program, which has been implemented for the past two years at Stone School, gives children exposure to orchestral instruments, music, and dance. Additionally, ukuleles, Orff xylophones, and small percussion instruments will be purchased for each elementary school to increase students’ hands-on instrumental music learning opportunities. Indian Trail Junior High School received notification that they have been awarded a $50,000 grant over a period of seven years. The first year’s allocation of $25,000 donation is designated for use in three areas according to Morrill. The instrumental music teachers will purchase gently used instruments for the performing arts classes in order to help students where there may be a financial need. The second portion will be used to purchase ukuleles for
