Addison businessman Charles Weigel, Jr. passes away July 6

Owner of Weigel-Miller Inc. in Addison dies at age 94

Charles “Chuck” Weigel, Jr. passed away on Friday, July 6, 2018, at the age of 94.

Weigel was born in Chicago in 1924 to Charles and Edith Weigel. He grew up on the northwest side of Chicago, attending Steinmetz High School and attended the University of Wisconsin and the University of Illinois after his service in the US Army Air Corps in World War II. He graduated from the University of Illinois in 1947 with degrees in Charles chemistry and math.

Weigel, Jr. Weigel and his wife Mary Ruth “Pris” purchased a home in Elmhurst in 1948, where he continued to reside through March 2018. Mary Ruth passed away in December 2014.

The Weigels had four children: Mary Jo (Chastain), Charles III, Vicki (Cobb) and Mark. Weigel was recalled to the service during the Korean War. He was an officer and active in the management of a small manufacturing company, Weigel-Miller Inc. in Addison.

Charles Weigel, Jr. was active in the surrounding area, serving as President & Chairman of the Board of the Addison Industrial Association (1957-1959); member of the Board of Directors of the Addison Chamber of Commerce (1954); member of the Business & Professional Men’s Club of Elmhurst; Vice President and member of the Board of Directors for the Elmhurst Rotary Club; member of the Board of Directors to the Elmhurst YMCA; member of the Board of Governors of Elmhurst Memorial Hospital; and, Vice-Chair of the DuPage County Industrial Development Committee; and member of the Board for Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Arts.

Weigel was elected Alderman of the 5th Ward in Elmhurst and served on City Council 1957-1961. He was elected Mayor of Elmhurst in 1961, 1965 and 1969. While Mayor he served as President of the DuPage Mayors and Managers Conference (1964-65); Vice President and Director of the Illinois Municipal League and on the Executive Committee of the Illinois Municipal League.

Charles Weigel, Jr. was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws from Elmhurst College in 1965 and was given the Elmhurst Jaycees Distinguished Service Award in 1972.

Bensenville Summer Concerts continue in downtown

Bensenville’s Music in the Park continues to offer family fun, great food and a variety of music that will keep you humming a tune all summer long.

Enjoy music, art, theater and nature at ‘Discover Mayslake’ July 21 Free open house spotlights year-round events at the estate

Take a self-guided tour of Mayslake Hall and enjoy live music and theater, art, nature hikes, archery and fishing at “Discover Mayslake” on Saturday, July 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County’s Mayslake Peabody Estate, 1717 W. 31st St. in Oak Brook.

The free, all-ages open house spotlights programs and events offered throughout the year at the 87-acre estate, which is home to the 1920s Tudor Revival-style Mayslake Hall, a national historic landmark.

Two Mayslake regulars will perform during the event, Sinfonietta

Bel Canto at 12 p.m. and Acappellago at 1 p.m. First Folio Theatre — Mayslake’s resident theater company and the western suburbs’ premier nonprofit professional theater — will give short performances at 12:30 and 1:30 p.m.

Visitors can take in the beauty of Mayslake on naturalist-led hikes through the forest preserve’s high-quality prairie, oak savanna and woodland and on garden walks led by volunteers who care for the estate’s heritage garden.

They can stop by exploration stations featuring bugs and letterboxing (a type of outdoor treasure hunt), or try archery and fishing

with Forest Preserve District rangers.

Other open house features include historical talks about the

forest preserve and the ongoing restoration of Mayslake Hall, tours of the mansion, an art exhibit of Mayslake-inspired works, and art

activities, including one where visitors’ completed images will be posted on Mayslake’s Facebook page.

State groups eye signs from Trump’s Supreme Court nominee on key issues ILLINOIS NEWS NETWORK President Donald Trump’s most recent nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court could make decisions that affect Illinois on everything from gun rights to privacy, and state groups such as the ACLU of Illinois are closely watching the process with an eye toward what it means for this state.

Trump nominated D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals judge Brett Kavanaugh for a lifetime appointment to replace Justice Anthony Kennedy.

Kavanaugh could shift the court to the right, which has the potential to impact a wide range of issues in Illinois, including cases from Illinois that could go before the Supreme Court.

One significant case from Illinois from the most recent court term was Janus vs. AFSCME, which ultimately freed public sector workers from forced union agency fees. Several years before that another Illinois case, Harris vs. Quinn, dealt with the same issue for home healthcare workers.

Raines said Illinois voters can’t wait for another case to be punted.

“Illinois is still able to reform their maps without needing the United States Supreme Court to be involved in this process,” Raines said. “The citizens and the General Assembly both have a voice and the ability to change the system and should.”

Newly-appointed DuPage Mayors and Managers Conference (DMMC) President Annunziato “Nunzio” Pulice’s top priority is to unify municipalities on key issues and to safeguard local tax revenue.

“The past several years of having to go to Springfield every year and demand that we keep our tax dollars in our communities reinforces the need for Illinois mayors to become more united and speak in one voice,” said Pulice, who also serves as the Mayor of west suburban Wood Dale.

“If we don’t stick together and find common ground and solutions to the challenges confronting local cities and villages, we become divided and municipalities and residents lose in the end. Each town in the Conference has its individual needs but we need to find ways to work together as one.”

Pulice took over as President of DMMC after Addison Mayor Richard Veenstra recently completed his one-year term. In addition, Naperville Mayor Steve Chirico, who served last year as DMMC Legislative Deputy Director, was named Vice President.

“DMMC is a powerful voice that speaks out for the needs of municipalities, and by extension, their residents,” Chirico said. “By working together to identify our shared goals and needs and move those forward in Springfield, our cities and villages are achieving far more together than we would apart. I look forward to continued success as a coalition in the coming year as we continue to work together for our region’s needs.”

The DMMC has worked successfully with partner organizations to reduce the amount of local funds the state had sought during the spring legislative session, Pulice noted.

Municipalities throughout the state banded together this year to cut the amount of local government distributive fund dollars the state threatened to take from 10 percent to 5 percent. Mayors also reduced the state’s share of the sales tax collection fee charged to municipalities from 2 percent to 1.5 percent. Both initiatives saved Illinois municipalities a total of nearly $80 million.

Re-elected as Wood Dale’s mayor for a second term in April 2016, Pulice previously served as an alderman. Having lived in Wood Dale with his family for the past 30 years, he was asked to run for alderman after volunteering for a number of city committees and local issues.

Pulice pledges to work towards policies that best serve all residents, including the ability to enact crime free housing programs and use existing hotel-motel tax revenues to pay for infrastructure projects.

Wood Dale mayor seeks more collaboration among municipalities

Addison July 12 Police said an officer responded to the Oswego Police Department to transport and process John A. Torgusen, 42, of Oswego, on an original warrant out of the Addison Police Department for retail theft.

July 9 Jose R. Hernandez-Vallejo, 34, of Chicago, was charged with DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol by the driver and speeding subsequent to a traffic stop near Fullerton and Yale at around 12:55 a.m.

July 8 Nicholas M. Greco, 19, of Hoffman Estates, was charged with unlawful consumption of alcohol by a minor, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident subsequent to a traffic accident investigation near Lake and Swift at around 9:27 a.m.

A 33-year-old Addison man was charged with domestic battery in the 400 block of Stevens Drive at

around 10:26 p.m. Police said the suspect grabbed a victim’s left arm and punched her twice on the top of her head leaving scratch marks on her forearm and a bruise on her bicep.

A 27-year-old Addison man was charged with domestic battery in the 600 block of N. Lincoln Ave. at around 4:51 a.m. Police said the suspect grabbed the victim by her hair, dragged her across the floor and repeatedly punched victim on her face, shoulders, and chest. The suspect also allegedly grabbed victim tightly by her arms causing bruising, and choked her by putting her in a headlock.

July 7 Lawrence A. Calicchio, 60, of Addison, was issued a citation for disorderly conduct at a restaurant at around 1:16 a.m. Police said officers responded to the restaurant after receiving a call of an intoxicated person that was creating a disturbance and refused to leave.

Calicchio knelt down in the middle of the street, used profanity and refused to obey officer’s orders to leave the area, according to police.

Incoming ITJH students take IDEA Challenge A total of 44 soon-to-be 7th and 8th grade students came to Indian Trail Junior High this week to begin The IDEA (Innovators, Designers, & Entrepreneurs of Addison) Challenge.

This three-week summer camp exposes student to real world innovation and design; collaborative teamwork; positive role-modeling; hands-on engineering; and practice in entrepreneurial practices and presentation skills.

Based on the success of last summer’s Innovation Alive Challenge, this year’s program has students working to conceive of, design, and

market a desk feature. Students researched by visiting classrooms and offices to see a variety of desks and ways in which they are used.

Teachers Janelle Bledsoe and Tracy Vitale are leading the camp again this year, with additional assistance from paraprofessional David Nguygen and local business partners, Pioneer Services and Legat Architects, who are sharing professional expertise and business experience with the students.

Students will be creating prototypes of their designs and will present their finished products in a ‘Shark Tank’-like setting on July 26.

Watching my stepfather slowly deteriorate as he got older was the main reason I opened Dynamic Strength.

Several years ago, I noticed my stepfather starting to slow down. His daily tasks were becoming more difficult for him and I noticed he started to shuffle a little bit when he walked. I knew if I could get him to exercise he would be able to do more and feel better. Although, having not worked out a day in his life, I knew that it would be almost impossible to get him into a gym.

That’s when I knew that Slow Motion Strength Training would be an excellent type of exercise for him and it would provide others who are not accustomed to exercising the opportunity to regain their muscular strength, become fit and healthy again.

Michigan’s downtowns offer vibrant art and music scenes, tastes that reflect global diversity and nightly entertainment that help visitors get to know the city. Pure Michigan is celebrating the dynamic and authentic urban environments across the state with a new digital campaign launching today.

Aimed to inspire millennial travelers by highlighting the unique ecosystems that combine art and culture with people and foods, the Urban DNA campaign utilizes influencers and video to introduce travelers to Detroit, Ann Arbor, Flint, Lansing, Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids, encouraging them to ‘Seek Authenticity.’

“The Urban DNA campaign highlights the unique cultures found in each of our state’s largest cities,” said Dave Lorenz, vice president of Travel Michigan, part of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. “We hope that in seeing what Michigan’s cities have to offer through the lens of residents with passion for their communities, travelers will be inspired to experience the foods, cultures and arts that Michigan cities have to offer.”

A key component of the campaign is a series of videos hosted by Detroit native and co-founder of Slow Roll, Jason Hall. The six-part series will take viewers on a tour of urban cores in Detroit, Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Kalamazoo and Flint – telling each city’s story through business owners and residents of these distinct destinations. The videos will be promoted in advertising and can be watched at michigan.org/cities.

Hall’s voice will also be heard on spots running on Expedia and Spotify as part of the Urban DNA campaign.

The campaign, with a budget of $1.2 million, seeks to attract and inspire visitors from key markets across Michigan and the Great Lakes region – including Chicago, Ill., Fort Wayne, Indianapolis and South Bend, Ind., Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus and Toledo Ohio; Green Bay and Milwaukee, Wis.; and Pittsburgh, Pa. – to take an overnight trip get to know one of our vibrant Michigan cities.

Pure Michigan will also work with social media influencers to help spread the Urban DNA story. These influencers have an affinity for travel and are millennials with an interest in arts and culture. In addition, custom content will be created for Thrillist with articles highlighting each city, and two murals will be painted on walls in the Wicker Park and Uptown neighborhoods of Chicago to further generate awareness of Urban DNA. These components will complement traditional digital and social advertising.

Two new members join District 88 Administrative Team Dr. LaTonya Wilks During its June 11 meeting, the District 88 Board of Education approved the administration’s recommendation to name Dr. LaTonya Wilks as the district’s new Director of Student Services. Dr. Wilks will succeed Dr. Sam Bentsen in that position, who will serve as the new Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources and Operations at Fenton Community High School. Bentsen joined District 88 in 2006 and served as Director of Deans and Assistant Principal at Willowbrook and as Di-

rector of Student Services for the district. District 88 wishes him well in his new role.

Dr. Wilks earned her doctorate in special education from Nova Southeastern University and is pursuing her Chief School Business Official degree from Concordia University as she works toward her superintendent license.

“I was eager to join District 88, because I am very interested in working in a school district that is committed to community involvement and one that embraces the pivotal role in the inclusion of all children,” Wilks said.

“I hope to influence the growth and development of all students based on data-driven best practices in education. It is my hope as Director of Student Services that I will provide exemplary educational opportunities to students that lead to academic success.”

Wilks lives in Country Club Hills with her husband of 20 years.

“My educational philosophy is based on the belief that all children can learn, but each learns in a different way and at different rates,” Wilks said. “I believe with hard work and

perseverance, we can touch each child’s life in a special way. Keeping the atmosphere positive is the key to success, as well as keeping the lines of communication open among staff, students and parents.”

Ryan Domeracki During its May 14 meeting, the District 88 Board of Education approved the administration’s recommendation to name Ryan Domeracki as the district’s new Director of Business Services. Domeracki will succeed Bob Flemming in that position, who has retired after 14 years of service to District 88. Flemming also is the proud parent of six District 88 alumni (who graduated from Addison Trail), and he served as a District 88 Board of Education member from 1997 to 2004.

Domeracki earned his bachelor’s degree in finance from Western Illinois University and his master’s degree in educational administration from Northern Illinois University.

He also received his Chief School Business Official certification from Northern Illinois University. Prior to coming to District 88, Domeracki was the Assistant Director of Finance & Operations for North Chicago Community Unit School District 187 since July 2016 and was

a financial analyst and Operations Manager with Aon Hewitt from 2011 to 2016.

“After learning about District 88 and the communities it serves, I Ryan felt its educational Domeracki system was one that best matched my experiences and abilities,” Domeracki said. “The opportunities afforded to students in District 88 demonstrate a progressive district and one that is very attractive to me. I look forward to establishing a professional relationship with the staff to understand their needs and work collaboratively with all members of District 88.”

Domeracki lives in McHenry with his wife, Amanda, and their two children, William and Charlotte.

“I’m very pleased with the Board’s decision to approve our recommendations to appoint Dr. Wilks and Domeracki to these positions,” said District 88 Superintendent Dr. Scott Helton. “Their experience, work ethic and commitment to the students of District 88 will help ensure we accomplish our mission of working for the continuous improvement of student achievement.”

Addison Braves baseball team wins pair of games Squad winding down 2018 season

The Addison Braves men’s semipro baseball team recorded a pair of recent victories.

In Wisconsin State League action, the Braves were 3-2 winners against the DePere Dodgers. The Braves scored all their runs in the second and third innings.

Jake Bilotta went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Ryan Trokey, Chris Wido and Josh Dryden each had a hit. Wido and Matt Kostro each had an RBI. Eric Ryan was the winning pitcher. He went five innings and allowed one earned run on five hits, while striking out five and walking one.

Ben Wessel pitched one inning and struck out two, while Chris Hawks pitched the seventh inning and struck out three to earn the save for the Braves.

The Braves also lost 14-0 to West Allis in Wisconsin play.

Back in Chicago Suburban Basball League action, the Braves dropped an 8-4 game to the Crystal Lake Cardinals in a contest played at Judson University in Elgin.

In a 6-2 win against the Oswego Cats at Community Park in Addison, Austin Wright was the winning pitcher. He threw eight innings, allowing only two earned runs on four hits while striking out 16 and walking four. Hawks pitched the ninth inning and struck out two.

Earlier this season Wright set what is believed to be a CSBL single-game record when he struck out

24 Westmont Red Sox batters in a nine-inning complete-game effort.

On July 1, Wright threw a seven-inning no-hitter against the Hammond Lakers. He allowed one Hammond batter to reach base in the game (on a hit-by-pitch).

The Braves also dropped a 3-1 CSBL game to the Homestead Ranchers and lost 16-6 in the nightcap to the Ranchers.

Through late last week, the Braves were 5-14 in CSBL play and 12-15 in WSL action.

Mike Rostine was leading the team in hitting at .419 with 26 hits in 62 at-bats. He had two homers and 21 RBI through late last week.

Diego Rincon was hitting .385 with five doubles and eight RBI. Bilotta had two doubles, two triples, one homer and 18 RBI in 105 plate appearances through late last week.

Elmhurst American Legion baseball teams ready for postseason play

The Elmhurst American Legion Post 187 junior and senior baseball teams began play this week in their respective postseason tournaments.

The U19 Muddogs team started play Tuesday in the 11th District playoffs held at Carol Stream Legion Post 76. Elmhurst opened play against Elgin Post 57.

If Elmhurst won that game, it faced Wheaton on Wednesday in Carol Stream. If Elmhurst lost it played in the consolation bracket Wednesday against either Wheaton or Elgin.

This year, the 11th District features only three communities with American Legion baseball: Elmhurst, Elgin and Wheaton. The championship game is slated for tonight at 6 p.m. in Carol Stream with the if-necessary second game taking place at 8 p.m.

The U17 Elmhurst American Legion team opens play Friday in the 2nd Division Junior South playoffs held at Shabbona School in Morris.

Post 187 faces Wheaton at 4 p.m. in Morris. The winner advances to a Saturday 12 p.m. game against Steger Post 521. The loser returns at 8 p.m.

Friday against either Morris Post 294 or Gardner Post 663.

The 2nd Division Junior South features five teams.

The U19 team finished the regular season with a 7-5 record. In recent action, Post 187 was a 9-6 winner against the Hammerheads 22U team in a game played at Stuart Sports Complex on U.S. 30 in Montgomery.

Elmhurst trailed 1-0 in the second inning before scoring four runs in the bottom of the second and three more in the bottom of the third to take a 7-1 lead.

Vince Bilotti had two RBI. Joe Orrico had a hit and two RBI. Brendan Russ had an RBI. Mason Kamp had a hit and a run scored.

Tim Beecroft had a hit and two runs scored. Jose Alvarez had a hit and a run scored. Dan Gusel Jr. had a hit and two RBI. Bryan Larsen had two hits, three runs scored and an RBI, while Tamaine Durr had two hits and a run scored. Ivan Lozada had a hit, a run scored and a walk. Kamp and Alvarez each doubled. Larsen stole two bases.

Russ was the winning pitcher. He went four innings and struck out five, while allowing three hits. Nick Lee pitched the final three innings and struck out three to earn the save.

Post 187 concluded the regular season with a trip north to face Fox Lake Post 703. Elmhurst came away with a 6-3 win.

Fox Lake led 3-1 after five innings, but Elmhurst scored five runs in the sixth to pull ahead for good.

Durr had a hit, a run scored and an RBI. Kamp had two hits, a run scored and two RBI. Beecroft had an RBI. Jordan Vogel scored a run, while Lee went 2-for-2 with two runs scored.

Larsen went 1-for-2 with a run scored and two RBI. Russ had a hit. Lee and Kamp doubled, while Kamp also homered.

Durr was the winning pitcher in relief. He pitched the final 2 2/3 innings and allowed one hit and no earned runs while striking out two. Vogel started and struck out two in 3 1/3 innings.

The Elmhurst junior American Legion team finished the regular season with a 14-10 mark.

In the final two games at the Junior Classic tournament at Wheaton, Elmhurst lost 6-5 to Moline Post 246.

Elmhurst led 5-2 but gave up four runs in the bottom of the seventh. The Muddogs had 11 hits in the game.

Linden Oaks offers programs for those struggling with opioid addiction Uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms can be a major barrier for those attempting to recover from addiction to opioids.

“You might experience bad flulike symptoms, such as muscle aches and fatigue,” says Aaron Weiner, PhD, Director of Addiction Services at Linden Oaks Behavioral Health in Naperville. “There are ways of managing these symptoms. Although withdrawal from opioids can’t kill you, it can be extremely unpleasant, stopping many from wanting to move forward towards health.”

The first option, ongoing medication-assisted therapy, can be initiated either in an inpatient or outpatient environment. Some addiction programs administer methadone, but at the Linden Oaks MedicationAssisted Therapy (MAT) Clinic, patients receive Suboxone, which is a combination of buprenorphine and

naloxone, which is used to reverse overdoses.

“Buprenorphine is less sedating than methadone and easier than methadone to taper off from when the person is ready to stay sober without any pharmaceutical assistance,” says Dr. Weiner.

According to the Merck Manual Consumer Version, “In many countries, buprenorphine has replaced methadone in detoxification programs.”

It’s been a busy summer for youth wrestling in Elmhurst.

IC Catholic Prep wrestling coach Kevin Sliva recently announced the formation of MCK Wrestling, an Illinois/USA Wrestling-affiliated spring-summer club formed in collaboration with former world team member Jimmy Kennedy and ICCP coaches Sliva, Corey Stanley and Matt Mulvihill.

Kennedy moved to the area this past winter from Ann Arbor, Michigan where he had been training for the past five-plus years at the University of Michigan Regional Training Center while competing internationally and being sponsored by Cliff Keen.

Kennedy led MCK Wrestling’s first free clinic at Redeemer Church in Elmhurst (home of MCK) on June 30, which attracted more than 40 kids.

On July 7, MCK hosted current world team member, 2016 world champion and four-time NCAA champion Logan Stieber. More than 50 wrestlers attended the clinic from all over the Chicago area.

In addition to the spring/summer wrestling club, MCK also will be forming a youth IKWF club with former York, Elmhurst Junior Dukes and current Willowbrook High School coaching staff member Gary Walker, who Sliva noted brings a wealth of coaching experience and passion.

Walker most recently spearheaded and led an Illinois wrestling coaches’ task-force meeting in May at Willowbrook to address issues with the sport. The meeting was attended by upwards of 100 coaches and guest speakers.

IC Catholic Prep grad Bianchini headed to St. Cloud State

The IC Catholic Prep wrestling program hit the recent trifecta in the good-news department.

For starters, recent graduate Joey Bianchini will become the first IC Catholic Prep wrestler to continue his athletic/academic careers at the college level. Bianchini will wrestle at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota.

Under coach Steve Costanzo, the Huskies have won three of the last four national titles at the Division II level. In addition to its 2018 title, St. Cloude State had 12 National Wrestling Coaches Association all-academic honorees, which tied it for fourth-highest among all Division II schools.

We are lucky to have such great coached with an incredible skill set and the ability to teach young people wrestling and life lessons. We want to make sure we are putting in the same amount of time with the kid who has been wrestling for eight years as we are with the kid who is stepping on the mat for the first time.

“We’re working on many ideas and plans for the future on how to increase participation and retention while continuing to make it fun for everyone. We’re excited about this.

Sliva, who noted the club will follow the USA Wrestling long-term athlete development model, said the club’s mission is simple.

“We want this to be a place where young people of all ages and all skill levels can receive consistent worldclass instruction on basic skills to advanced training, nutrition education, mental preparation, strength and conditioning, networking, fun, friendships, games, camps and more,” he said.

“It’s an exciting time for wrestling in Elmhurst. This is something that is super-special that will grow wrestling for everyone regardless of school, age or experience level.”
