Library named one of Illinois’ 200 Great Places by AIA Illinois Addison Public Library has been named one of Illinois’ 200 Great Places by The Illinois Council of The American Institute of Architects (AIA Illinois), in honor of the state’s Bicentennial in 2018. Each of the 200 Great Places are accessible to the public, holds significance for local communities and creates a unique experience for visitors.

The announcement was made as part of National Architecture Week, which showcases the innovative and talented architects who’ve made positive contributions to society and coincides with the birthday week of the nation’s first president-architect, Thomas Jefferson, on April 12.

“Illinois holds a unique place in the history of American architecture and our people lead with a strong tradition of design innovation that is recognized worldwide,” said Governor Bruce Rauner. “The AIA list recognizes Great Places all around our state and tells the collective story of great imagination, sheer will, and skill.”

All of the 200 Great Places are featured at illinoisgreatplaces.com AIA Illinois’ Illinois Great Places recognition program was created in 2007 to commemorate AIA’s 150th anniversary and was designed to broadly include the “built environment,” which includes civil, landscape and engineering places, as well as architecture.

Enjoy music, art, theater and nature at ‘Discover Mayslake’ July 21

Free open house spotlights year-round events at the estate Take a self-guided tour of Mayslake Hall and enjoy live music and theater, art, nature hikes, archery and fishing at “Discover Mayslake” on Saturday, July 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County’s Mayslake Peabody Estate, 1717 W. 31st St. in Oak Brook.

The free, all-ages open house spotlights programs and events offered throughout the year at the 87-acre estate, which is home to the 1920s Tudor Revival-style Mayslake Hall, a national historic landmark.

Two Mayslake regulars will perform during the event, Sinfonietta Bel Canto at 12 p.m. and Acappellago at 1 p.m. First Folio Theatre — Mayslake’s resident theater company and the western suburbs’ premier nonprofit professional theater — will give short performances at 12:30 and 1:30 p.m.

Visitors can take in the beauty of Mayslake on naturalist-led hikes through the forest preserve’s high-quality prairie, oak savanna and woodland and on garden walks led by volunteers who care for the estate’s heritage garden.

They can stop by exploration stations featuring bugs and letterboxing (a type of outdoor treasure hunt), or try archery and fishing with Forest Preserve District rangers.

“We are so lucky to have this historic icon right in our backyard,” said Forest Preserve District of DuPage County President Joe Cantore. “It’s just one of the many cultural attractions that connect people to nature in DuPage County.”

Other open house features include historical talks about the forest preserve and the ongoing restoration of Mayslake Hall, tours of the mansion, an art exhibit of Mayslake-inspired works, and art activities, including one where visitors’ completed images will be posted on Mayslake’s Facebook page.

Throughout the year Mayslake Hall hosts theater and musical productions, art classes, tours, exhibits, workshops, summer camps, special events and private functions.

Col. Ulysses S. Grant passed up a chance to have his soldiers ride in train cars. Instead, he thought it best that they march to war.

So, on July 3, 1861, Grant mounted a horse and led his first Civil War command out of Camp Yates in Springfield, en route to Quincy.

The 39-year-old Grant had molded his somewhat unruly troops—members of the 21st Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment—into a disciplined fighting force.

“There was direct railroad communication between Springfield and Quincy, but I thought it would be good preparation for the troops to march,” Grant wrote in his “Memoirs.”

The approximately 1,000 men of the 21st Illinois marched about 8 miles the first day before setting up camp just west of present-day Riddle Hill near what is known today as the Old Jacksonville Road in Sangamon County.

On the Fourth of July, Grant led his men to Island Grove in western Sangamon County, where they stopped for a while at the home of Capt. James N. Brown, a wealthy farmer and Shorthorn cattle raiser.

“My father, Capt. Brown, sent (my brother), William Brown, out to meet Col. Grant and tell him the people wished him to stop and the troops could rest and enjoy the day with them,” wrote Benjamin Warfield Brown in 1927. “The exercises soon began and Col. Grant and a great many of the soldiers listened very intently to the exercises. Hon. David A. Brown read the Declaration of Independence and the Rev. Peter Cartwright delivered the main address.”

The march on the Fourth covered about 17 miles and ended on the Corrington farm, 9 miles east of Jacksonville.

Years later, William Corrington recalled the soldiers’ encampment on his father’s farm.

“I well remember that 4th of July as I watched Grant and his regiment go in camp just across the road from my father’s home … on the head of the Mau-

vaisterre (Creek),” Corrington wrote.

“Another reason that I remember it so distinctly was I had my pockets full of firecrackers; had been celebrating the 4th, when by some means, the crackers got on fire, and before I could get them out, they had burned a hole in my new cotton trousers; and as I was standing in front of Grant’s tent that evening, he said, ‘Son, what’s the matter with your pants?’ My answer was: ‘I had firecrackers in my pocket, and they got on fire,’ He laughed and said: ‘I bet you are a Union man,’ and I said, ‘Yes, sir.’ I was all through the camp, and the soldiers gave me several little keepsakes I prized very highly. They were a tired, footsore lot.”

Morgan County Fairgrounds just west of Jacksonville and rested. During the Civil War, the fairgrounds was called Camp Duncan and was used for drilling soldiers.

In 1910, A.Y. Hart of Mattoon, who served in the 21st Illinois, remembered the regiment’s brief stay at the fairgrounds.

“Col. Grant stationed himself at the gate at the fairgrounds and examined our canteens for whiskey,” Hart said.

“One man of my company bought a coffee boiler, stopped the passage between the boiler and spout with wax, filled the boiler with whiskey and the spout with milk, and Col. Grant passed him in.”

The regiment passed through Jacksonville on State Street late on the morning of July 5. As the soldiers passed the Joshua Moore family home on West State Street, 15-year-old Ensley Moore asked what regiment it was.

“The reply was ‘the 21st Illinois.’

And to the question who is your colonel, the reply was ‘Grant.’ Grant! I had never heard of him, and probably no other citizen of Jacksonville had,” Moore said years later. “But there he was, riding along up the street, his horse moving at a slow walk, an officer on each side of the colonel.”

This enamel-trimming procedure is usually carried out on narrow teeth so that they can achieve the desired placement with regard to adjacent and opposing teeth. For instance, the malocclusion (“bad bite”) known as “overjet” refers to upper teeth that are protruded (the lower teeth are situated some distance behind the upper ones). In some cases, narrowing with tooth shaving enables the orthodontist to pull back the upper teeth so that they are in a more regular alignment with the lowers.

the 21st Illinois marched southwest to Allinson’s Grove, about 7 miles from Jacksonville. The soldiers camped there the night of July 5.

The next day, Grant and his command covered about 15 miles, marching from Allinson’s Grove, through Exeter in Scott County and camping that night on the northern edge of Naples, near the east bank of the Illinois River.

On July 8, the regiment was ferried across the river and then marched west on the Perry and Naples Road. Grant later received orders to return to the west bank of the Illinois River and wait for a steamboat that would carry them to St. Louis. From there the regiment was to board a train for Ironton, Mo. Grant and the regiment waited for the steamboat, but it never arrived because it got hung up on a sandbar downstream. On July 10, the 21st Illinois crossed the Illinois River and caught a train for Quincy. Grant’s men then went to Missouri to reinforce Union troops who were under attack from secessionist guerrillas.

Grant left the 21st Illinois in August 1861, when he was promoted to brigadier general. He would later lead all Union forces in the war.

Members of the 21st regiment, most of whom were from eastern Illinois, later participated in the battles of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Chickamauga, Ga., where they suffered many casualties.

July 1 Waldemar Jankowski, 62, of Addison, was charged with DUI subsequent to a traffic crash in the 200 block of Mill Road at around 8:18 p.m.

Villa Park June 30 Ricardo Gonzalez, 20, of Des Plaines, was charged with unlawful consumption of alcohol and being stopped in the left lane near North and Oaklawn at around 6:44 p.m.

Man sentenced to 18 years in drug-induced homicide Berlin reminds public 31 overdose deaths so far in 2018 in DuPage

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced on Tuesday, July 3 that a Melrose Park man had been sentenced to 18 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) for selling heroin that ultimately led to the overdose death of 26-year-old Naperville resident Marcus Penton.

Kevin Liszka, 34, of Melrose Park, appeared in court last week, where Judge George Bakalis handed down the sentence.

On March 1, following approximately half an hour of deliberations and a three-day-long trial, a jury found Liszka guilty of one count of Drug Induced Homicide, a Class X felony punishable by a minimum of six/up to 30 years in the IDOC. He has been held in the DuPage County Jail awaiting trial since his arrest on a bond of $2 million with 10 percent to apply.

heroin. Further investigation into the death revealed that Sabala purchased the fatal dose of heroin from Liszka. On October 4, 2016, Sabala entered an agreed plea of guilty to one count of Manufacture or Delivery of a Controlled Substance, a Class 2 Felony, and was sentenced to seven years in the IDOC. “This case is yet another very sad reminder that we as a society are still facing a very dangerous and deadly opioid crisis,” Berlin said.

“To date this year, DuPage County has suffered 31 overdose deaths.

With this case, and today’s sentencing, we are again sending the message to drug dealers that if you provide illegal drugs that lead to the death of another person, you will face a significant amount of time in the penitentiary.

“This morning Mr. Liszka learned that his decision to sell that fatal dose of heroin will land him behind bars for nearly two decades.”

Liszka will be required to serve 75 percent of his sentence before being eligible for parole.

Texas couple accused of breaking into locker at L. A. Fitness Also suspected of using stolen credit cards DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Elmhurst Chief of Police Mike Ruth announced recently that two Houston, Texas men have been arrested for allegedly breaking into lockers at an Elmhurst Health Club and stealing credit cards, which they later used to purchase gift cards.

Azeez A. Aweda, 31, of Westheimer Road, and Tasiu A. Jimoh, 31, of Bellaire Road, both appeared in Bond Court where bond was set at $100,000 with 10% to apply for each man. Jimoh and Aweda have each been charged with two counts of bur-

glary, a Class 2 Felony, and one count of Identity Theft, a Class 3 Felony. In addition, Tasiu has been charged with one count of Possession of Burglary Tools, a Class 4 Felony.

On June 25, Elmhurst Police officers responded to a call at L. A. Fitness on York Road regarding a report of offenders breaking into a locker.

The victim reported that his locker had been broken into and that his car keys were taken. The victim also reported that his car, which was parked in the LA Fitness parking lot, was burglarized and that three credit cards had been taken.

It is alleged that at approximately 1:30 p.m., that afternoon, Aweda and Jimoh entered the health club and

once inside broke into the victim’s locker, stealing his car keys. It is further alleged that the pair then used the keys to burglarize the victim’s car. It is alleged that Aweda and Jimoh then used the stolen credit cards to purchase gift cards from the Elmhurst Mariano’s in the amount of $3,045.

An investigation into the matter conducted by the Elmhurst Police Department led to Aweda and Jimoh.

The two were arrested and taken into custody without incident on Thursday, June 28, at an area hotel where they were allegedly found to be in possession of $47,125 worth of gift cards. Tasiu was also allegedly found to be in possession of bolt cutters capable of breaking into a locked lock-

er.

“When members of the public are in a facility that requires them to lock their valuables, they have every right to expect that their valuables will be there when they return,” Berlin said. “It is alleged that by whatever means, these two defendants gained access to a restricted area of a health club where they never should have been, broke into a locked locker and helped themselves to whatever they could find. Thanks to the outstanding investigation conducted by the Elmhurst Police Department however, Mr. Aweda and Mr. Jimoh, who apparently have no ties to the Chicagoland area, were taken into custody and charged before they left the area

entirely.”

Aweda’s next court appearance is scheduled for July 23, and Jimoh’s next court appearance is scheduled for July 16. Both men are scheduled to be arraigned at their next court appearance. Tasiu has posted the necessary 10%, or $10,000, and has been released from custody. Aweda remains in custody at the DuPage County Jail.

Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendants’ guilt. The defendants are presumed innocent and are entitled to a fair trial in which it is the government’s burden to prove their guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Addison Trail summer baseball team accomplishes plenty Blazers focus on quality practice time

The Addison Trail baseball team tried a different approach to its summer season and the results were nothing but positive.

The Blazers played only five summer games—going 4-1—and instead focused more on workouts and practices during the month of June.

“We had a great summer,” said Addison Trail coach Mike Kennedy.

“We knew what we wanted to accomplish and we got it done. Playing five games is not important to us. We had 60 kids in camp and that’s a very good number for us. The guys put in the work this summer and it was an eye-opening experience for the guys who are going to be seniors. They perceived that they are in charge now. We graduated a great group of seniors and the juniors followed their lead. Now they are the leaders, which is a good thing. They took the opportunity right now and used it to grow as leaders.”

With those graduations, Kennedy had spots to fill and saw plenty that he liked. “We have positions to fill and guys came out and showed what they can do,” he said. “It will be nice next spring when we have those spots on the field to fill. We got a good idea of what we have.”

Kennedy lauded the work of returning players such as Michael Scali, Vince and Nick Daudelin, along with AJ Carlson.

“We also have some junior guys who were on the sophomore team last year who are stepping up such as Alex Conrad,” said Kennedy. “He was part of the sophomore team last year and he will play a big role on the varsity. He’s a pitcher and outfielder who will put himself at the top of the order. He’s also a great base runner.

He’s another guy who really stood out.”

Kennedy said the new approach to the summer was met with good acceptance. “These guys are playing six to eight games a weekend with their travel teams,” he said. “Now you are asking them to come back during the week and play up to eight games with the high-school summer team. That’s tough. I want these guys to take swings and get their swings right instead of just playing games.

The Elmhurst American Legion Post 187 U17 Muddogs team has had no shortage of competition this summer.

Post 187 was 14-10 through late last week after competing in four games at the Junior Classic tournament hosted by Wheaton Post 76 at the Carol Stream Legion Post 76 Baseball Stadium.

In a 7-1 win over Wheaton, Elmhurst scored three runs in the third inning and added four more in the seventh.

Tyler Gelsomino scored two runs.

Jose Alvarez had a hit and a run scored. Dave Sykora went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI. Joe Orrico went 3-for-3 with two RBI. Justin Lomax and Nathan Kriz each had a hit. Orrico and Sykora each tripled, while Orrico stole three bases and Jack Ryan had two thefts.

Elmhurst stole eight bases in the game.

Sykora also helped his cause on the mound where he threw a complete-game. He allowed eight hits and one earned run while striking out seven.

Elmhurst then lost 12-2 to Ford

Post 21. Ford led 5-2 after three innings and then scored three in the fifth and four in the seventh. Elmhurst made five errors and had only three hits.

Gelsomino, Kriz and Nick DeSimone each had a hit. Massimo Cortez and Gelsomino had two stolen bases each. Elmhurst stole seven bases in the game. Jack Schlitz took the loss.

He struck out three. Andrew Pietrucha, Michael Hilgart and Orrico also pitched in the contest.

Post 187 also dropped a 6-5 game to Moline Post 246. Elmhurst scored three runs in the third and led 5-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh only to have Moline score four runs to win it.

Gelsomino went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Alexis Cotto had a hit and a run scored. Sykora had two RBI. Alvarez went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Tommy Ryan had a hit, as did Jack Ryan. Alanzo Howard had a hit and a run scored, while Andrew Pietrucha had two hits and a run scored. Two of Gelosmino’s three hits went for doubles. Cotto took the loss.

Elmhurst rebounded to notch a 7-6 win over Alton Post 126 at the Junior Classic in eight innings. Elmhurst tied the game at 6-6 in the bottom of the seventh and won it in the bottom of the eighth when Alvarez singled home Cotto with the winning run.

Gelsomino was the winning pitcher in relief. He pitched 5 1/3 innings and allowed no earned runs on two hits.

In earlier action, Post 187 lost 5-2 to Longhorns 17U in Tennessee.

Longhorns led 3-0 after the first inning. Gelsomino, Cotto (1 RBI), Howard and Cortez each had a hit.

Cotto and Gelosmino doubled. Cortez took the loss.

Post 187 also downed the Mt. Juliet Riverdogs 7-5 in Tennessee tournament play in eight innings. Elmhurst scored four runs in the eighth inning and held off a Mt. Juliet rally in the bottom of the eighth.

Gelsomino went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Cotto was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Alvarez went 1-for-4 with two RBI. Kriz was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Cortez had an RBI. Hilgart went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Pietrucha went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Lomax scored a run and DeSimone had a hit. Alvarez, Kriz and Pietrucha each had a double.

Gelsomino was the winning pitcher.

He struck out seven in an eight-inning complete-game effort.

Elmhurst led 2-0 after three innings and then broke the game open with six runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth.

Orrico went 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Dan Gusel Jr. went 1-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI. Jack Enright had a run scored and two RBI. Tim Beecroft had a hit and three RBI. Tamaine Durr had two hits and a run scored. Ivan Lozada had a hit and a run scored. Mason Kamp had a hit, a run scored and two RBI. Brad Howard scored two runs and walked twice. Beecroft doubled and Orrico tripled in the game. Durr and Pietrucha each stole two bases. Elmhurst stole nine bases.

Jordan Vogel was the winning pitcher. He went five innings and allowed three hits, no earned runs and struck out four.

Post 187 was slated to play the Illinois Hammerheads 22U team at the Stuart Sports Complex in Montgomery earlier this week. Post 187 concludes the regular season tonight at 6 p.m. at Deerfield Post 738.

Play in the 11th District American Legion Baseball Tournament is slated to begin next Tuesday at Carol Stream Legion Post 76 Baseball Stadium.

“It was a good summer,” said Tyrrell. “We have pretty much a whole new group with nine seniors having graduated. We lost a lot of great leaders and there will be some big shoes to fill.”

Two players who saw key minutes last year and are returning are senior-to-be Khali Saunders and junior Ryan Wojtalewicz, along with junior Dom Gaudio. “Even though they are younger, they got a lot of experience last year,” said Tyrrell.

The Knights also brought up freshman Chauncey Lee during the playoffs last season. “He gained some valuable experience and we will look to leverage that,” said Tyrrell.

With such a high volume of turnover, Tyrrell said the summer season was key in terms of getting the team to come together as a unit. “Chemistry-wise it’s a whole new group,” the coach pointed out. “Guys are getting comfortable with each other.

The summer is a process where you develop those relationships and work on that with each other. From where

we started to where we finished I was extremely pleased. I’m extremely optimistic about what is to come for this group.”

Tyrrell also saw strong play from Mike Carpanzano. “We expect him to be a key guy,” Tyrrell said. “Ryan Asmussen is another guy who has worked on his game and loves the sport of basketball. We will look to get him a positive role going forward.”

Back with the team this summer is Saunders’ brother Khalil. “He was with us freshman and sophomore year and he expressed an interest in being part of the program again,” said Tyrrell. “He did get hurt, but he has stepped right into a leadership role.

He’s a natural leader. We’re excited that he came out.”

In addition to Lee, Tyrrell also saw plenty to like from sophomores Justin Hall and Johnny Falduto. “We’re all very high on those three sophomores,” he said. “They are going to contribute this season. They did good things that reassured us about our decision to give them the opportunity to play varsity basketball. They are hard-working athletes.”

Junior Zach Jordan also will be a contributor. “Zach is a natural scorer who has outstanding shooting ability,” said Tyrrell. “He has a good basketball IQ. We’re expecting him to be one of our key scorers this year.”

In addition to four weeks of camp, the Knights played in the summer league at Ridgewood. “We saw some good competition there,” said Tyrrell.

The Knights also headed to Michigan where they attended the Ferris

WB announces start dates for fall sports practices/tryouts First day of Willowbrook fall athletics

Willowbrook has announced start dates for all its fall sports for the 2018-2019 school year.

Practices/tryouts start Aug. 6 for football and boys and girls golf and Aug. 8 and 13 for all other fall sports.

Girls golf will meet Aug. 6 at 3 p.m. on the varsity softball field on the east side of the school. Boys golf will meet Aug. 6 at 3 p.m. with the freshman at Sugar Creek in Villa Park and the varsity at a yet-to-bedetermined site.

Cheer begins on Aug. 13 in the fieldhouse at 4:30 p.m., while Poms start Aug. 13 in the auxiliary gym at 3 p.m.

Boys and girls cross country starts Aug. 8 at 3 p.m. at Willowbrook Park.

Girls tennis begins Aug. 8 on the south tennis courts at 3 p.m., while boys soccer kicks off Aug. 8 at Ardmore Field at 3 p.m.

Girls volleyball starts Aug. 8 at 3 p.m. in the main gym, while girls swimming also will begin Aug. 8 at a site yet to be determined.

Football starts Aug. 6 at the stadium and west practice fields at 3 p.m.

In order for student-athletes to participate in interscholastic sports the first semester of the 2018-2019 school year, the athlete must have passed five academic subjects in the prior high-school semester (spring/ summer 2018). No such requirement is made of freshman athletes.

Additionally, the athlete must take and maintain passing grades in five academic subjects each semester.

Grades will be checked on a weekly basis once the school year has started, Willowbrook pointed out. An academic subject is any subject that receives one credit a semester.

The athlete also must have a current physical and must be registered online with all the documents checked off at https://willowbrook8to18.com.

Incoming freshman physicals will be accepted for the freshman year and should be turned into the nurse when registering for school. New
