During its May 23 meeting, the District 88 Board of Education, along with the District 88 administration, conveyed their heartfelt “thank you” to Addison School District 4 Superintendent John Langton for his years of dedicated service to the Village of Addison.

Langton will retire in June 2022, and the District 88 Board of Education and administration would like to

commemorate his leadership, friendship, spirit, teamwork and commitment to the Addison school community. Langton has served in public education for 34 years, and the District 88 Board of Education and administration honor the positive impact he has made on the lives of countless students.

The Board presented Langton with four resolutions – from District 88, the Village of Addison, Sen. Don Harmon and the Illinois House of Representatives (Deb Conroy, Terra Costa Howard and Kathleen Willis). Duckworth named Legislator of the Year by National Guard Association Keynote speaker explains Illinois Guard’s role in Ukraine

The National Guard Association of Illinois honored U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth as the NGAI Legislator of the Year during its annual awards ceremony on Friday, May 20.

“I’m so honored to receive this award from an association that has meant so much to me since I joined the Illinois National Guard so many years ago,” said Duckworth, who retired as a lieutenant colonel in the Illinois Army National Guard. “As your senator, I work hard to make sure our service members, veterans and families have the support they deserve.”

A double amputee who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom, Duckworth serves on the Senate Armed Services Committee and is the chairman of the Airland sub-committee.

She expressed pride that some of her provisions were included in the 2022 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).

“One of the provisions included requires the Air Force to maintain a sufficient fleet of C-130s to ensure there is inventory to carry out critical missions both domestically and overseas,” she said.

“This will ensure the 182nd Airlift Wings’ -- based in Peoria -- mission will remain for years to come.”

She added it would not only give Illinois the ability to respond to emergencies and domestic missions, but also would protect the jobs of 1,250 airmen and about 370 fulltime employees.

Praise for Duckworth: ‘She gets it’ Maj. Gen. Rich Neely, the Adjutant General of Illinois and Commander of the Illinois National Guard said Duckworth’s support of service members, veterans and families is the reason she was selected as the NGAI Legislator of the Year.

“She gets it. She has worn the same uniform as we do. She has served in the same formations,” Neely said. “It makes my job as TAG a lot easier when I walk in a room and explain our issues at hand to someone who has worn the uniform.”

Speaker addresses Illinois’ role in Ukraine Former U.S. Congressman and retired major general William L. Enyart, who served as the 37th Adjutant General of Illinois, began his keynote address with a nod to Duckworth.

“Having one of our own serving on the Senate Armed Services Committee is of critical importance to us,” he said. “Her selection is a well-earned honor for her. She is truly an advocate for the National Guard, Illinois, and national security.”

Enyart talked about the connection between the Illinois National Guard and the Ukrainian military.

ing the Ukrainian military. But we were there at the beginning,” Enyart said. “The Illinois National Guard’s support to Ukraine begin in the last century when we sent a platoon-size element to Ukraine in 1999. That was our beginning with Ukraine.”

Enyart explained that the State Partnership Program with Ukraine’s neighboring country Poland began in 1993 and at times, supported Ukraine and assisted the California National Guard with their SPP with Ukraine.

“With our training and assistance, Poland and Ukraine in the late 1990s formed the Polish Ukrainian Peace Force Battalion,” he continued.

“Those same units saw service in Kosovo with soldiers from the Illinois Army National Guard’s 106th Aviation Regiment in 2008-2009.”

Enyart said the Ukrainian soldiers and officers were becoming well-acquainted with the Illinois National Guard by that time.

“Even before the 2008 deployment, the Illinois National Guard sent battalion size units to NATO Peace Shield exercises in Yavoriv, Ukraine in 2000 and 2001 -- Yes, Yavoriv, the same city which was hit recently by Russian cruise missiles.”

Enyart stressed the training assistance did not end in 2001.

“In 2005, we sent an element to act as observers and controllers for NATO war games that took place at the then-new Ukrainian War College,” he said. “It was a challenge in the early days.”

He told the audience the soldiers from Headquarters Company, 33rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, which deployed to Ukraine in 2020, continued to build on the foundation the ILNG has laid for the past 23 years.

“The Pentagon thought Putin’s

grand land grab would succeed in very short order and most believed Ukrainian’s military would collapse under an armored assault,” he said.

“But Ukrainians have shown what well-trained and well-led soldiers can do in defending their homeland from an autocratic aggressor.”

Enyart said the training, mentoring and fellowship the Illinois National Guard has provided the Ukrainian military has played a critical role in the successful defense of their homeland.

ACA holds benefit for Ukrainian refugees Effort raises $5,000 to date; still time to donate

A group of art enthusiasts turned out on Saturday, May 21 when the Addison Center for the Arts (ACA) hosted an art sale and exhibition at the ACA Gallery as a benefit for Ukrainian refugees.

The event raised more than $5,000 to date from the sale of their artwork and generous cash donations. All proceeds from the sales and contributions were donated to the United Ukrainian American Relief Committee (UUARC), an organization that helps families emigrate to the U.S. from Ukraine. For Ukrainians seeking refuge in the U.S., the UUARC provides $1,000 for each refugee family and have purchased three ambulances to help those wounded in Ukraine. Other funds have provided medical supplies like tourniquets to help the displaced and injured citizens of Ukraine.

Among those who have reaped the benefits of UUARC is artist Tania Blanco, whose family emigrated to the U.S. from Ukraine when she was a child. She is living proof of the effectiveness of UUARC at shepherding displaced families such as hers. Blanco still has more than 20 relatives still living in Ukraine, which has become Tania’s main focus as she follows the news reports every day.

Tania’s artistic submission titled Reflection received Honorable Mention at the Addison Art Guild’s spring exhibition held at the ACA on Saturday, April 9.

Another artist who donated her artwork and expertise to the effort is Jennifer Hereth, a professional artist and retired art professor who is a compassionate and longtime international refugee activist. Hereth is Professor Emeritus at College of DuPage (COD) and was on the faculty at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Music at the reception was provided by self-proclaimed “aging rockstar” Joe Eddy Brown and his group of musicians.

There’s still time to help You too can still join the ACA, Tania Blanco and Jennifer Hereth in helping Ukrainian refugees. The Addison Center for the Arts will continue accepting donations through Saturday, June 18. Almost all of the art that was on display for the reception on May 21 was sold out, however, the artists made a few more original artworks, art cards, and prints available for purchase by donation at the ACA. Eagle Scout project dedicated to the late Dr. Helton Regan builds enhancements to Army Trail Nature Center During its May 23 meeting, the District 88 Board of Education recognized and honored Addison Trail alumnus Jackson Regan (class of 2022) for his Eagle Scout project.

Regan built a planter box and two doggie bag stations for the Army Trail Nature Center in Addison. The planter is dedicated in memory of the late District 88 Superintendent Dr. Scott Helton, who passed away on Dec. 10, 2020.

Dr. Helton was a true leader, ambassador and advocate for the students of District 88 and beyond. He was ingrained in the District 88 community and helped build positive futures for countless students through his contributions to public education and coaching football, wrestling and track. Dr. Helton had more than 33

years of experience in education and served in a variety of capacities, including as Principal of District 88’s Addison Trail High School for 11 years and as Superintendent of the district since 2012. For more information about Dr. Helton, visit dupage88.net/ScottHelton.

The Board presented Regan with a frame of photos from the unveiling of his Eagle Scout project this past fall, as well as a flag that was flown over the United States Capitol at the request of Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi.

Regan earned Eagle Scout status earlier this school year, which is the highest rank attainable in Boy Scouts of America. Regan is with Troop 408, and he joined Cub Scouts in 2010.

an informational meeting, where he saw and heard about the various fun activities and opportunities in which he could participate as a member of the troop.

His Eagle Scout project took three months to complete and involved proposing the idea to the committee of his troop, as well as the beneficiary.

Regan then planned each phase, gathered the necessary materials and led his fellow troop members in constructing the structures.

Regan said he hopes to stay involved with Boy Scouts through helping others complete their Eagle Scout project. He plans to attend Illinois State University and earn a degree in theatre technology or computer science.

New law invests in childcare for first responders The governor recently signed a plan into law led by State Sen. Suzy Glowiak Hilton to invest in childcare services for workers with non-traditional schedules, such as law enforcement officers, firefighters, EMS personnel and more.

“Finding reliable childcare can be difficult for first responders and other third shift emergency workers,” said Glowiak Hilton (D-Western Springs). “By creating the Off-hours Child Care Program Fund, Illinois is working to increase accessibility for parents in public service who work non-traditional hours.”

Under Glowiak Hilton’s law, the Department of Human Services is re-

quired to establish and administer an Off-Hours Child Care Program to assist first responders and other workers with access to off-hours, night, or sleep time childcare. The program is appropriated $2 million in the Fiscal Year 2023 budget.

“Many state childcare facilities don’t offer services outside of normal work hours,” Glowiak Hilton said. “This measure will help fund childcare for hardworking individuals serving our communities.”

Under the law, DHS must implement the program by July 1, 2023.

New Illinois law aims to deter catalytic converter thefts A new Illinois law adds stricter guidelines for catalytic converter sales to reduce help thefts. The law was signed with support from State Sen. Suzy Glowiak Hilton (D-Western Springs).

“Working families are suffering from catalytic converter thefts, and the reported crimes are rapidly increasing,” she said. “This new law is intended to impose stricter guidelines to prevent bad actors from getting away with crime.”

The law, filed under House Bill 107, adds catalytic converters to the definition of recyclable metal which requires businesses to keep record of

sales.

Under the new law, individuals seeking to sell a catalytic converter must provide the license plate number of the vehicle, a picture of themselves, a verified name and address, and a signed declaration stating the catalytic converter was not stolen.

In addition, the measure prohibits a recyclable metal dealer from purchasing a catalytic converter with a value $100 or more with cash.

The law is effective immediately.

Bensenville Park District to screen ‘The Goonies’ on June 11 Kremples Park to host 1985 cult classic at dusk

The Bensenville Park District will screen the 1985 adventure comedy film “The Goonies” at dusk Saturday, June 11, at Kremples Park, located at the intersection of Jacquelyn and Dolores Drives in Bensenville.

The screening kicks off the park district’s summer Movies in the Park series in association with its Park ‘n Play initiative, which brings more than 50 events to neighborhood parks throughout the district this summer. The event is free, and refreshments will be available for purchase.

“Activities like our Entertainment Dayz Movies in the Park series make people want to get outdoors, connect with their neighbors and have fun,” says Bensenville Park District Manager of Facilities and Special Events Todd Linder. “We invite residents to bring their families, lawn chairs and blankets and meet their friends for this special outdoor movie.”

The film stars young Sean Astin (“Rudy”), Josh Brolin (“W.”) and Corey Feldman (“Stand by Me”), among others, as kids who live in the “Goon Docks” neighborhood of Astoria, Oregon. In their attempt to save their homes from foreclosure, they discover an old treasure map that takes them on an adventure to unearth the long-lost fortune of One-Eyed Willy, a legendary 17th-century pirate. The kids are pursued by a family of criminals who want the treasure for themselves.

“The Goonies” features music by 1980s pop superstars Cyndi Lauper, REO Speedwagon, The Bangles and Luther Vandross, among others.

Two more park district movie screenings are scheduled this summer.

“Aquaman” will be shown at a Dive-In Movie event at the Bensenville Water Park & Splash Pad, 1100 W. Wood Street, at dusk Saturday, July 9. Admission to the water park for the event is just $10, and single-person rafts and floats are permitted but not supplied. “Sing 2” will close out the series at dusk Saturday, August 20, at Sunset Park, located on Grove Avenue between Judson and Barron Streets.

Part 2: Republican governor candidates on the issues GOP field talks Trump, Biden, ‘CRT,’ abortion and more

Part Two, in which the candidates address Critical Race Theory and schools; Trump, January 6 and Black Lives Matter; and COVID-19 policy, appears this week.

Abortion, January 6, Donald Trump, Critical Race Theory and whether Joe Biden is rightfully the president of the United States were the basis of questions asked to a field of six Republican candidates for Illinois governor last week.

A pair of debates took place on two stages in Chicago due to a scheduling conflict between two TV networks, NBC 5 and WGN. NBC’s 6 p.m. debate included Aurora Mayor Ricard Irvin, the polling and money frontrunner, along with former Waterloo state Sen. Paul Schimpf and suburban attorney Max Solomon.

The 7 p.m. WGN debate that followed included Sen. Darren Bailey, of Xenia, Petersburg venture capitalist Jesse Sullivan and suburban paving magnate Gary Rabine.

The following is a summary of some of the candidates’ response to the various debate questions.

On ‘CRT’ and schools At the WGN debate, Bailey, Sullivan and Rabine were asked to define “CRT,” short for Critical Race Theory.

Critical race theory is an educational framework aimed at analyzing the role race plays in the legal system and American history, but it is not required in Illinois law or statewide curriculum.

A state rulemaking body approved “culturally responsive teaching and leading standards” that call on Illinois colleges and universities, by 2025, to change the way prospective teachers and administrators are trained to make them more accommodating to diverse students.

Those rules, which passed on partisan lines, don’t apply to K-12 curriculum. Republicans have incorrectly cited those standards as being “CRT mandates” amid nationwide Republican scrutiny of the framework.

Rabine, instead of defining the term, described its “biggest problem.”

“From what I see, from again, nephews, nieces and the communities I’m in, is we’re teaching kids to be victims in so many ways, whether it’s their sex, their race, and it’s wrong. We have to be, we have to

teach our kids to be champions and embrace themselves.”

Bailey defined it as a “bunch of nonsense.”

“You know what I see? I see a lot of confusion,” he said. “It wasn’t even supposed to enter our schools until 2027. But mistakenly, it’s showing up in our lower classrooms and it is, it just, it’s worksheets that are being purported by the Illinois Education Association. It’s basically an idea that whatever I think, my right could be your wrong. Your wrong could be my right.”

Sullivan cited the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. “For me, the lens, the primary lens you should use to judge a person is not their racial identity. The primary basis that you should judge a person on is the content of their character,” he said. “We need to be doing more civics lessons for our teachers so that we can have a love of country rather than looking at and saying we have institutional racism built into the design of our country. That is not what we have.”

The NBC debate did not touch on CRT, but Solomon said parents should be writing curriculum, Irvin said parents and local school boards should be writing curriculum, and

Bond set for man charged in fatal DUI crash

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Lombard Chief of Police Roy Newton have announced that bond has been set for an Elgin man accused Raymond Griffin of causing a fiery crash that claimed the life of his 17-year-old passenger Byron Montgomery.

Raymond Griffin, 24, appeared in

court where Judge Margaret O’Connell set bond at $750,000 with 10 percent to apply in accordance with an arrest warrant issued on April 22.

Griffin has been charged with two counts of aggravated DUI causing death, a Class 2 felony, and one count of misdemeanor speeding 35plus mph over the speed limit.

On Aug. 15, 2021, at approximately 12:20 a.m., officers with the Lombard Police Department were dispatched to the Sonesta ES Suites located at 2001 S. Highland Ave-

nue, for security issues regarding a party that was broken up by security at the hotel.

Officers responding to the call observed a red BMW, allegedly driven by Griffin, fleeing the area northbound on Highland Avenue at approximately 73 mph in a 35-mph zone.

As officers followed the vehicle, it is alleged that Griffin continued driving northbound at a high rate of speed through the T-intersection of Highland Avenue and Roosevelt

Road where he lost control of the vehicle causing it to roll over, ultimately resting on the roof and becoming engulfed in flames.

Both Montgomery and Griffin were located near the car and transported to a local hospital where Montgomery was pronounced deceased upon his arrival. It is further alleged that Griffin’s BAC was more than .08 at the time of the crash.

“Like all alleged DUI cases, the case against Mr. Griffin was 100

percent avoidable,” Berlin said. “I offer my sincerest condolences to Mr. Montgomery’s friends and family on their loss.”

“I thank our patrol officers, Investigations Unit and evidence lab for their collaborative efforts on this case,” Newton said.

“I also thank State’s Attorney Berlin and his staff for their legal guidance.”

Griffin’s next court appearance was scheduled June 9 for arraignment in front of Judge O’Connell.

Westmont teen charged with shooting woman, carjacking

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin announced that a 16-year-old Westmont resident accused in juvenile court of shooting a woman in her leg and hijacking her car at gunpoint has been transferred to adult court.

Mitch Crawford made his first appearance in adult court in front of Judge Daniel Guerin. On Friday, May 27, Juvenile Court Judge Anthony Coco granted the state’s motion to transfer Crawford’s case to

adult court.

Crawford has been charged with one count of aggravated vehicular hijacking (Class X felony), one count of aggravated battery with a firearm (Class X felony), one count of aggravated fleeing and eluding (Class 4 felony) and one count of unlawful possession of a concealable firearm by a minor (Class 4 felony). His bond has been set at $250,000 with 10 percent to apply.

p.m., Westmont police officers responded to a call of a vehicular hijacking that had just occurred at the Suffield Gardens apartment complex.

Upon their arrival, officers found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound to her leg. She was immediately transported to a local hospital for medical attention and is currently recovering from her injuries.

It is alleged the victim was returning to her home and parked her car near her apartment. It is alleged that

when the victim opened her car door, Crawford was standing outside the door armed with a gun. It is further alleged that Crawford pointed the gun at the victim’s face and ordered her to get out of the car. It is alleged that Crawford then shot the victim in her leg, pulled her out of the car by the hood of her coat and then fled the scene in the victim’s car eastbound on 63rd Street.

At the WGN debate, Sullivan, Bailey and Rabine were asked what they would have done in March 2020 at the COVID-19 outset.

Sullivan said he would have treated the pandemic more like Florida did. “(Gov. JB Pritzker) harmed our small business owners. He shut them down without thought. He doesn’t understand how hard it is to set up a business and put your livelihood on the line,” Sullivan said. “Young kids in school, he made our most vulnerable suffer the most.”

Rabine said he would have kept businesses, churches and schools open.

Bailey touted his lawsuits against mask mandates which catapulted him to statewide notoriety. A Clay County judge ruled in his favor before the decision was thrown out at the appellate level.

“Gov. Pritzker’s tyrannical actions have destroyed lives. He’s … destroyed the futures of some of our children in schools. This is absolute nonsense and it can never happen again,” he said.

Rock ‘N Wheels returns with Fortunate Sons, Neverly Brothers

Addison’s “Rock ‘N Wheels” summer concert series continues Thursday, June 9 with “Fortunate Sons,” a Tribute to Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR) with “The Neverly Brothers.”

Based in Chicago, “Fortunate Sons” tours nationally and internationally to keep the tradition of CCR’s timeless music alive. Using original vintage gear and instruments, accurate costumes, and spoton musical ability, “Fortunate Sons” instantly conjures up the full experience of seeing Creedence in their prime.

Opening the night is “The Neverly Brothers,” a Rock ‘n’ Roll tribute from Elvis to the Beatles. “The Neverly Brothers” concerts are a tribute to one of the most exciting chapters in music history: the birth, near death and resurrection of Rock n’ Roll. Their one-of-a-kind high energy stage performances take you on a musical guided tour of rock history - from 1955 to 1965.
