The 5th was a 1st for the Addison Cup Golf Invitational ‘The Don of Sports’ event won by Ron Bruns

Hosted by Don Figarelli, “The Don of Sports,” the Addison Cup Golf Invitational was held on May 1 for its 5th year in a row. The day proved to be historic as, for the first time, there was a tie after regulation play. On beautiful sunny and warm May Day, Addison’s mayor, The Honorable Rich Veenstra, was on hand to throw the ceremonial first pitch. Prior to that, the Boy Scouts from Pack 420 opened the event with the Presentation of the Colors and by leading of the Pledge of Allegiance. Then, “The Don’s” granddaughter Isabelle Figarelli graciously performed Our National Anthem. Also helping with the event was Julia Figarelli and grandson, Nicholas. Charles Sims, the Addison Cup’s Inaugural Champion and Super Supporter, and Donald Ortale were on hand to assist with the scoreboard updates.

On the third hole, Sisto’s aggressive tee shot hit the green and bounded well over and into the bushes. This seemed to invigorate Munro and Bruns as they played very consistently through the first three holes. It was the 6th hole where things really got interesting. shot approximately 110 yards in the air to clear the picturesque lake in front of them and still avoid the treacherous sand traps to the left of the green. Grigsby’s tee shot effectively took him out of the match as he pushed it right and “splat; that was that!” Many in the crowd expected Sisto to make a change at the 6th to move for the lead, but this would not be Nick’s

The competition is tight Two-time defending champ, Nick Sisto started the competition with a tee shot on the opening hole, landing about 20 feet from the cup. Would this be another repeat of the last two years crowning Nick as champ? It seemed so, as Nick planted his tee shot squarely on the green on the second hole. The other competitors had yet to reach the green in regulation, however several good putts kept Mike Munro and Ron Bruns in contention. Nick’s putter was failing him and he was unable to take advantage of his stellar iron play. Mike Grigsby was a distant 4th after a few mishaps on the prior holes.

year, as he too found the water with his tee shot. Munro gained another stroke on Hole #7 and eventually headed into the final hole with a two-shot lead. Munro, who competed in the inaugural Addison Cup Invitational back in 2013 (finishing second) was now in line to win the prestigious title. He confidently landed his tee shot on the green of the ninth hole.

Match ends in three-hole playoff Bruns also found the green, but was much further away so he putted first and nearly made a birdie with a 40-foot putt. He tapped in for a par-3. Needing a score of 4 for the win, Munro stood over his putt and nervously left it about 12 feet short.
