Reunion Jazz Orchestra to perform July 6

The Addison Center for the Arts (ACA) has announced that the organization has received four grants from the Illinois Arts Council Agency’s “Arts Tour Music Live” program. The Arts Tour Music Live provides support to eligible Illinois not-for-profit organizations who present Illinois performing artists, companies or groups for performances.

These grants partially fund the five free Tuesday evening concerts ACA plans for its 2021 concert season which include: Tuesday, July 6 Reunion Jazz Orchestra Tuesday, July 13 The Limited Edition Big Band Tuesday, July 20 Blue Buddha Band Tuesday, July 27 Felix Pham Trio Tuesday, Aug. 10 ROKKOR The Reunion Jazz Orchestra will perform on Tuesday, July 6 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Gazebo on the Addison Village Green, One Friendship Plaza.

More about Reunion Jazz Orchestra There are many “Big Bands” out there, but none quite like the Reunion Jazz Orchestra. All members of the RJO share an interesting background in that each member is a “Son of Notre Dame.” Members are either from Notre Dame College Prep in Niles, Ill., or from Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind. Out of this creative environment have come many famous and award-winning musicians, such as: Jim Pankow (Chicago), Grammy

nominated composer and pianist Jim McNeely (Vanguard Jazz Orchestra), Dick Sisto, and a long list of Chicago music scene stalwarts including Joe Sonnefeldt (Poi Dog Pondering), Larry Lecover (Rhythm City), Dan DeLorenzo, John Kornegay, Bob Sutter, Dave Creighton, and Mark Madsen.

The Reunion Jazz Orchestra has among its ranks doctors and architects, information technology professionals, music educators, executives and entrepreneurs. The band has as authentic a swing as you’ll find anywhere, but it also plays ballads, progressive, Latin, and some powerful big band rock.

The Reunion Jazz Orchestra has performed at Navy Pier Winter Wonderfest, Addison Days, Niles Family Funfest, Arlington Heights Unplugged, Cantigny Park Labor Day Festival, Mount Prospect Summer Veterans Bandshell Concerts, Art in the Barn, Good Shepherd Hospital Benefit Banquet, Collegiate Jazz Festival, Oak Street Beachstro, Del Webb Sun City, Glen View Club, Windsor Manor, and a variety of other benefits, dinners, and parties in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. In addition to their many single appearances, the RJO has reigned as the “house band” at the Sphinx Cafe in Niles, and Papa’s Pub in Roselle.

The RJO is a volunteer alumni organization of Notre Dame College Prep (www.nddons.org). All the money raised from performances and the sale of CDs is donated to Notre Dame College Prep for the support and enhancement of the music program. As a result of their efforts, and the support of fans and friends, the Reunion Jazz Orchestra has established a scholarship program at Notre Dame College Prep for students of the music department.

The Villa Park Sportsmen’s Club held its annual Youth Fishing Derby at North Terrace Park on Saturday, June 12. The award winners at the recent fishing derby included Bryce Raffen (above left, age 11) of Villa Park, who received the award for catching the most fish.

Bryce caught exactly 100 fish during this year’s three-hour event.

Another photo shows Cristina Mildyn (above right, who just turned 7 years old) of Villa Park, who won the award for the most unusual catch—a large turtle. Mickey’s Drive-In, located at 105 W. St. Charles Road, and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) were the fishing derby’s two main sponsors. All of the children who took part in the event received some type of prize. Those prizes included rods, reels and tackle boxes.

Earlier this year, Elmhurst U. received a record-setting philanthropic gift from Alfred Koplin, who has

served as a University trustee since 1981. His gift represents the largest made by a living donor in the University’s history and was the latest of at least 50 significant gifts the Koplins have made to Elmhurst over the years.

Villa Park’s ice cream social returns; this year’s event takes place July 3 The Villa Park Historical Society and the Villa Park Historical Preservation Commission are co-sponsoring the return of their traditional ice cream social. Last year’s event was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This year’s social will begin at 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 3, at the Villa Park Historical Museum and Pavilion, located at 220 S. Villa Ave., along the Illinois Prairie Path.

In addition to ice cream, the event

will feature live music, vintage cars and several craft tables. Members of the Villa Park Historical Society Board will be inside the museum to answer questions about the museum’s exhibits.

Elmhurst University has renamed a prominent campus building to honor businesswoman and philanthropist Jean Koplin, who, with her husband, business leader and University trustee Alfred Koplin, have been supporters of Elmhurst for more than 40 years.

During a dedication ceremony on Friday, June 11 that was attended by members of the Koplin family and University trustees, the building formerly known as Circle Hall was renamed Jean Koplin Memorial Hall.

The DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) reached a momentous vaccination milestone after administering its 100,000 COVID-19 vaccination at the DuPage County COVID-19 Vaccination Clinic this week. As COVID-19 vaccination progress continues in DuPage County, DCHD strongly encourages residents who are not yet vaccinated against COVID-19 to help protect themselves and others by getting vaccinated at the earliest opportunity as more transmissible variants are on the rise.

“Providing more than 100,000 COVID-19 vaccinations at our community vaccination clinic is an incredible achievement and one that would not have been possible without a true team effort. I want to thank our wonderful staff for their unwavering commitment to keeping the people of DuPage County safe and protected against this deadly virus,” said Karen Ayala, Executive Director of DuPage County Health Department. “As a reminder, I strongly encourage everyone to get fully vaccinated as soon as they can. Montini Catholic grads reflect on historic senior year Seniors from Montini Catholic’s Class of 2021 celebrated four years of hard work, discipline and achievement on Friday evening, May 21 at the Lasallian college preparatory high school’s 52nd graduation ceremony. One-hundred and twenty-three (123) graduates crossed over from Bronco student to Bronco alumni under the clouds and stars at Duffy Memorial Stadium.

“You are approaching a pivotal point in your lives, a unique opportunity to look back and look ahead, to be grateful and to be hopeful,” said Principal Kevin Bierne as he reminded the students of a challenging school year that will go down in history for all high school, grade school and college students alike. “This year has truly been a year like no other. What an exercise in “Never before....” “How can we….?” “Should we…..?” “Let’s try….” We have all adjusted, pivoted, worked hard, and

problem solved together, in solidarity as a Montini community.”

Students and families were very grateful to be able to celebrate in person this year. (Last year’s graduation event was a drive-thru celebration due to COVID-19 regulations.)

“What a wonderful night of Bronco Pride,” said parent and alumna Melissa Doucet ‘94. The event was held outdoors to accommodate the CDC’s guidelines for social distancing and was limited to four family members per graduate.

“It was a great night to be a Bronco!” said Mr. Segredo, who said his prayers were answered with beautiful, breezy weather for the ceremony. He was joined on stage to present diplomas by School Board Chair and Montini graduate Jan Orlowski ‘74.

“We congratulate the graduates of the Class of 2021 and recognize their outstanding families,” said Orlowski.

“These seniors have accomplished

so much over these last four years and have endured even more during this historic Covid age. On behalf of Montini Catholic faculty and staff, I want to thank all of the families and loved ones who have helped these graduates to not just survive, but to thrive during this historic year.”

Valedictorian Nora Sypkens simply and elegantly thanked her fellow peers for persevering together as a class and coming out on top despite the many hurdles and setbacks.

“This year was one which called for greater unity, flexibility,and creativity, and this class certainly rose to the occasion,” she said. “This class was placed into an environment of extreme hyper-awareness—awareness of how fortunate we were to be in school, the stakes of how careful we had to be to maintain this, and how precious each and every day was at Montini.

“Rather than discouraging us, this

situation had the opposite effect: little things like eating lunch in the cafeteria - or the main gym - seeing friends in the hallway or getting to go outside for even part of a class became so much more special and we approached each day with the mentality to make it count while we still could.”

As a drone flew above Duffy Memorial Stadium to capture the moment, 123 mortarboards were tossed into the air as Montini’s graduates spent their last few moments together as a class.

“Life has a consistent way of reminding us that the path will be winding and bumpy at times, and that we must journey together, with grit, with hope, with stamina,” said Principal Beirne in conclusion. “You’ve all shown those qualities this year and that empathetic service to others matters. How we live this life we’re given matters. You matter!”

FOID bill strengthening enforcement for revoked cards will head to Pritzker Measure maintains $10 renewal fee, allows for voluntary fingerprinting to expedite renewals CAPITOL NEWS ILLINOIS

The Illinois house on June 16 passed a Firearm Owner Identification card law change that would strengthen law enforcement’s ability to retrieve guns from those with suspended or revoked FOID cards and allow for voluntary fingerprinting to expedite renewals.

Renewals FOID card applicants would not be required to submit fingerprints, but if they do, or they share with the Illinois State Police the fingerprints they filed to receive their Concealed Carry License, they would be eligible for the automatic renewal process, which is to be established by ISP by 2023.

That process would allow applicants who submit fingerprints to be automatically renewed without a renewal fee, provided they purchased a gun sometime within the 10-year period between renewals and passed the ISP background check in the process.

Otherwise, the application fee for renewal would remain at $10 every 10 years, but the bill would direct $5 of each renewal to State Police Firearm Services Fund and $5 to the State Police Revocation Enforcement Fund.

Under current law, only $3 went to the Firearm Services Fund, with $6 going to the state Wildlife and Fish Fund and $1 going to the State Police Services Fund.

The law already passed the Senate on May 31 by a 40-17 vote and it passed the House Wednesday by a vote of 75-40. Its Senate sponsor was Dave Koehler, D-Peoria, and its House sponsor was Jay Hoffman, D-Swansea. While a lawmaker put a procedural hold on the bill, Hoffman said Wednesday night he expects it to soon head to Gov. JB Pritzker for a signature.

FOID card renewal delays have been an ongoing problem in Illinois, with gun rights groups filing lawsuits regarding the delays and lawmakers frequently citing the issue as the main reason they are contacted by constituents.

The State Police supported the FOID bill, House Bill 562, and has long advocated for the redirection of funds from the renewal fees to fund a more targeted approach to renewals and enforcing revocations.

Revocation enforcement The bill also strengthens enforcement mechanisms for removing guns from the hands of those who have had FOID cards revoked.

That includes creating a “prohibited persons portal” to track people who have had their cards revoked or suspended. Law enforcement agencies would have access to that portal, and the bill requires ISP to have it online within 90 days of the bill’s effective date, which is January 2022.

The bill also requires ISP to establish the Violent Crime Intelligence Task Force to aid in enforcement of FOID card revocation or suspension enforcement. The task force would “conduct enforcement operations” for those with suspended or revoked licenses, with a priority on individ-

uals “presenting a clear and present danger to themselves or to others,” according to the bill.

The task force would be a law enforcement entity, not a legislative task force, and the ISP director would have the authority to execute intergovernmental agreements with other law enforcement agencies to create it. Any agency that is part of the task force could apply for grants through the State Police Revocation Enforcement Fund, which receives half of the FOID fee money.

Another portion of the bill would require ISP, by July 2022, to create a publicly searchable database that contains the serial numbers of weapons that have been reported stolen. Anyone purchasing a gun from a private sale could search the database to ensure it was not stolen.

The measure also requires the State Police to monitor state and federal databases for residents charged with firearm-related crimes and to correlate the measure with FOID and Concealed Carry Licenses to identify individuals that should not be allowed to own a gun.

Floor debate The bill was backed by Illinois State Police Director Brendan Kelly. Its passage came more than two years after a shooting at an Aurora warehouse left five people dead and others injured. In starting a push for new FOID laws in 2020, Kelly said that shooter should not have had a gun because there was a 1995 felony

aggravated battery conviction on his record.

During floor debate, Rep. Keith Wheeler, R-Oswego, said he had issues with some of the language in the bill, but he would vote for it because of its increased enforcement mechanisms. Wheeler said he had family connections to two people killed in the Aurora Shooting at the Henry Pratt Company warehouse.

“And just so it’s clear to everyone, that (shooter) had his FOID card revoked, almost five years before that horrible incident occurred. Five years before the shooting, but law enforcement had no tools to be able to recover that (gun),” he said.

Trevor Wehner, who was killed in the shooting on his very first day as an intern, Wheeler said, was the son of his high school classmate, Tom Wehner. Wheeler said he voted for the bill per Tom Whener’s request.

“There are a lot of things in this bill that I don’t love, that I don’t think are going to work the way they may be intended,” Wheeler said. “And I commit to all my friends in the (Second Amendment) community that we will work on getting those corrected before this bill takes effect... But this bill gives law enforcement the actual chance that necessary tools to prevent another tragedy.”

Otherwise, the floor debate mirrored much of the public discourse on guns, with Republicans challenging the constitutionality of the FOID card in general and Democrats citing the need for enhanced safety measures.

Rep. Deanne Mazzochi, R-Elmhurst, said the bill does not do enough to target those who own guns illegally without a FOID card.

“It’s not going to fix the outstanding problems that people are experiencing when it comes to actually getting their FOID cards,” she said. “It’s also not doing anything to increase the penalties on individuals who are arrested for gun crimes without a FOID cards. It’s not doing anything to mandate prosecution of people who are arrested for gun crimes without possessing a FOID card.”

Once again, much more was said than done by Illinois lawmakers

By Roger Eddy The spring session of the Illinois General Assembly is now history.

At the beginning of the session, there was renewed hope that critical aspects of Illinois government might change. After all, for the first time in decades, the House had a new speaker. After nearly 40 years as House speaker, interrupted by a short two-year stint

by Lee Daniels, Michael Madigan resigned as speaker and soon thereafter as a House member.

Madigan is at the center of a highly publicized scandal involving Commonwealth Edison, as were several of Madigan’s lobbying cronies. Recently, Madigan’s former chief of staff, Tim Mapes, was indicted by a federal grand jury.

The news of Madigan’s departure as speaker was barely believable at first. Mike Madigan stepping aside?

When the reality of his departure became real, there was optimism and anticipation that substantive change might take place to the House rules which had basically created a legislative process allowing for one-person control.

Newly elected House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch made statements hinting at the possibility of changes to the House rules that would allow for a more bipartisan, democratic approach.

Also facing the General Assembly this spring was the issue of redistricting. Maybe this onceevery-decade practice of drawing legislative and judicial maps would change? Perhaps some type of fair, independent process could be established free of political pressures by either party? There was widespread support for creating an Independent Map Commission that

would be responsible for drawing fair legislative boundaries free from political gerrymandering.

As a candidate for governor in 2018, JB Pritzker was quoted as saying, “We should amend the constitution to create an independent commission to draw legislative maps, and I have supported this effort for years.”

Back in 2014, Pritzker even donated $50,000 to a fair maps initiative. New House Speaker Welch publicly stated support for fair maps, although he did mention that his interpretation of fair might be different than someone else’s.

Another topic of interest this spring was ethics reform. After the past year and a half, during which a couple of former House members were indicted on various charges related to payments received from lobbyists, there was renewed optimism that a strong ethics bill might pass.

The concern over legislators retiring from the General Assembly

and then becoming lobbyists the next day was possibly going to be addressed with a strong revolving door law.

While a minor ethics bill passed this spring, the governor described the legislation this way: “It isn’t perfect, and more work definitely remains. …” The changes have been described as baby steps. Most babies have longer strides. Let’ see if the governor uses his amendatory veto power to make it tougher. It did pass 113-5, which means it has some improvements included, but it is a far cry from the type of reforms that were discussed and are needed to renew some trust in state government.

What about budget transparency?

With a new speaker and relatively new Senate president, hopes were high that a more transparent budget process would take place.

Unfortunately, we got more of the same sneaky process. The

practice of adding budget language consisting of thousands of pages to an empty shell bill just hours before a vote on the budget is not transparency.

Neither lawmakers nor the public had an opportunity to review, discuss and question the way our tax dollars were being spent. In the future, how about at least a 72-hour sunshine period prior to any final version being voted on?

Regretfully, the reality is that after all was said and done this legislative session, much more was said than done.

‘Juneteenth’ becomes official state holiday Day marks anniversary of last enslaved Americans learning of freedom

The day that marks the anniversary of the day in 1865 when some of the last enslaved Americans learned that they had been freed is now an official state holiday in Illinois.

At a bill signing ceremony in front of a signed copy of President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, Gov. JB Pritzker signed House Bill 3922 into law, designating June 19 as Juneteenth National Freedom Day in Illinois.

Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863. It declared that all slaves held in states that were in rebellion against the United States were immediately and permanently free.

however, for slaves held in states like Kentucky and Maryland that had not seceded from the Union. They would not become free until after ratification of the 13th amendment in 1865.

It also did not immediately free slaves who were held in territory that was still under the control of the Confederacy. Those slaves had to wait until Union forces captured their territory which, in many cases, did not happen until near the end of the war.

Most historians date the end of the war as April 9, 1865, when Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee, who led the Army of Northern Virginia, surrendered to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox. But not all Confederate

armies surrendered at that time.

It was more than two months later, on June 19, 1865, when federal forces reached Galveston, Texas, and informed enslaved people in that city, and throughout Texas, that they had been freed.

Juliana Stratton, Illinois’ first Black lieutenant governor and a descendent of enslaved people from Mississippi, spoke about her own ancestors who continued to be held in bondage even after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed and said that for them, Juneteenth was “the true Independence Day.” “Juneteenth is a time of celebration,” she said. “Juneteenth is a time of telling our stories of hope. June-

teenth is a declaration of faith that despite chattel slavery, we will never stop fighting for freedom; that despite black codes right here in Illinois that discouraged free blacks to live in this state, we will never stop fighting for freedom; that despite lynchings and other forms of racialized violence that happened two blocks away from where we stand right now, that we would never stop fighting for freedom.”

Under the new law, June 19 will be recognized as an official state hol-

iday and all flags covered by the Illinois Flag Display Act will be flown at half-staff. In addition, a Juneteenth flag will fly over the State Capitol in Springfield.

Juneteenth will also be a paid holiday for state workers and public school employees whenever that day falls on a weekday, which will happen first in 2023.

Currently, 48 states recognize Juneteenth as either a ceremonial or official state holiday.

The Abraham Lincoln Presiden-

tial Library and Museum is currently displaying a rare signed copy of the Emancipation Proclamation. It is one of 48 copies that were made and sold to raise money for sick or wounded Civil War soldiers in 1864, all signed

by Lincoln, Secretary of State William Seward and Lincoln’s aide John Nicolay.

Of those copies, only 27 are known to still exist.

The original, hand-written version that Lincoln signed in 1863 was destroyed in the Chicago Fire of 1871.

Mariners in action

The Villa Park Mariners participated in Saturday’s virtual event at Jefferson Pool. The Mariners’ regular-season meets in the DuPage Swim and Dive Conference are usually dual meets between two teams competing at the same venue, but this season’s meets will be virtual events. Teams will only swim at their home pools, with results eventually scored against two other conference teams. There are no relay events in this season’s meets. The photos show a pair of Mariners during the last two races of Saturday’s competition. Grace Roscoe is pictured (above left) during the 50-meter breaststroke in the 15-18 girls division. Aidan Nichols is shown (above right) during the 15-18 boys level’s 50-meter breaststroke. Nichols is a 2020 Willowbrook High School graduate who is now a member of the men’s swimming team at Valparaiso University. The Mariners’ entire 2020 season was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Swimmers who were supposed to swim their final season as a Mariner in 2020 have been allowed to compete this year. Villa Park’s season continues with another virtual meet this Saturday. There is no meet on Saturday, July 3. The Mariners will complete their 2021 season with meets on the last four Saturdays in July (July 10, July 17, July 24 and July 31).

Cruz earns All-State honors in the shot put

Senior delivers an eighth-place effort at the state meet

Willowbrook seniors Enrique Cruz and Sergio Ayala competed at the IHSA Class 3A boys track and field state meet, which took place on Saturday at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

Cruz, who will play football at Syracuse University, completed his Willowbrook athletic career with an eighth-place finish in the shot put event at the state track and field meet. Cruz’s best effort on Saturday covered 16.06 meters. Cruz earned All-State recognition for his eighthplace performance at the state meet.

Ayala closed out his career as a Warrior with a 16th-place finish in the discus throw at Saturday’s state meet. Ayala’s longest throw at Saturday’s competition traveled 42.63 meters.

Jonathan Kelso earns All-American distinction at UW-Platteville Baseball standout graduated from Willowbrook in 2017

Jonathan Kelso, a 2017 Willowbrook High School graduate, piled up numerous honors during his record-breaking 2021 season with the University of Wisconsin-Platteville baseball team.

Kelso was recently recognized as the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Player of the Year. He was also named to the American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings All-American second team.

Kelso led the WIAC in hits (69), batting average (.442), slugging percentage (.782), on-base percentage (.532) and stolen bases (27) during the Pioneers’ 2021 season. Kelso finished second in the conference in runs (55), total bases (122), doubles

(18) and triples (4). He placed fourth in the conference in home runs (9).

The Pioneers completed the 2021 season with an overall record of 1526.

Kelso broke the UW-Platteville program’s single-season records for hits and total bases this season. He recorded the Pioneers’ best batting average in a season in 25 years.

“The UW-Platteville baseball program has been around a long time,” said Chad Harris, the head coach of the Pioneers. “For Jonny to be earning this program’s first All-American honor, this is very special. It is special for his current teammates and coaches, and for all the players and coaches who have come before us. For those of us who

saw him every day, this award is a no-brainer. When people who did not see him routinely still recognized how great his season was, that says it all. Personally, it is hard to put into words how proud of him I truly am. He has 100 percent earned every honor he has received.”

Kelso recorded a hit in 36 of the 41 games he played during the 2021 campaign. He had a career-best 13game hitting streak during the season. He finished the season with a 10-game hitting streak. Kelso recorded 25 multi-hit games, including seven games with three or more hits. Kelso, who was the starting center fielder in all 41 of the Pioneers’ games, did not commit a single error in 115 defensive chances.

Kelso hit nine home runs and scored 55 runs during the season. He broke the UW-Platteville baseball program’s single-season records for hits and total bases (122). The Willowbrook High School Athletic Booster Club held its annual Senior Athletic Celebration on May 24. Several Willowbrook seniors received awards and scholarships during the event, which was held in the school’s main gymnasium.

Two of the honored studentathletes from Willowbrook’s Class of 2021 were Hayden Kingsbury and Allison Smith, who both received the Lauren M. Kiefer Memorial Scholarship.

Kiefer Memorial Scholarship for Willowbrook High School seniors, the foundation makes donations to local families and non-profit groups for specific needs and projects.
