Addison man arrested in Carpentersville Accused of stealing jewelry, attacking two women in their home

An 18-year-old from Addison stands accused of breaking into the home of a Carpentersville family last week, stealing jewelry and attacking a teenage girl and another woman.

Kevin D. DimasZacarias, of the 300 block of West Dale Street, was charged Tuesday, June 14 with residential burglary, aggravated domestic battery and unlawful restraint, all felonies, Kevin D. along with battery, Dimasa misdemeanor, acZacarias cording to Kane County court records.

Carpentersville police reported that the charges stem from an attack that took place on June 9.

That morning, police allege that a teen girl walked her younger sister to school, came home and saw a man running from a bedroom in the home.

The girl reportedly recognized the suspect as Dimas-Zacarias because he was dating a relative of hers. The suspect covered the girl’s mouth and told her not to resist, but she tried to scream and began scratching and kicking him.

The altercation woke another woman in the home, who reportedly

came out to see Dimas-Zacarias on top of the girl, attempting to choke her. The suspect then charged at the woman, causing her to fall, before fleeing from the home. The suspect returned and knocked the woman down a second time -- into a bird cage -- before grabbing a backpack

that he had left behind. Police said he then drove away from the area.

Using the suspect’s vehicle description and other information, Dimas-Zacarias was found in Bensenville on Tuesday, June 14, and brought him to the police station in Carpentersville. While

there, Dimas-Zacarias gave a video-recorded statement in which he admitted to stealing two necklaces, a Lady of Guadalupe pendant, and a wireless cellphone charger, according to police.

Dimas-Zacarias was being held at the Kane County jail on $80,000

bail. He is due in court June 30 and faces a punishment ranging from probation to 15 years in prison, if convicted.

The public is reminded that a complaint contains only charges and is not proof of a defendant’s guilt.

DuPage Convalescent Center named for Judge Ken Moy Was first-ever Asian-American elected to county government in state

Jim Healy, District 5 County Board Member said in making the motion to rename the Center, “I am confident Ken Moy’s legacy will be to inspire people to become involved in our community,” said District 5 County Board member Jim Healy.

“We are pleased to honor this public servant who paved the way for so many.”

The DuPage Convalescent Center has been in operation since 1888, providing quality care to elderly and disabled residents. Approximately 75 percent of its residents receive Medicaid funding.

The DCC Foundation was established in 1993 to provide support and supplemental funding to improve the quality of life for Convalescent Center residents.

On Tuesday, June 14, the DuPage County Board voted to name the County’s Convalescent Center in honor of former County Board member Kenneth Moy, citing his decades of service as a barrierbreaking elected DuPage County Board member and as a member of the 18th Circuit Court.

Ken Moy became the first Asian-American elected to county government in the state of Illinois when he won a seat on the DuPage County Board in 1984. He won reelection to the Board in 1988 and 1994. During that time, he also served as a DuPage Forest Preserve Commissioner.

He then served as a member of the 18th Circuit Court for 11 years from 1996 to his retirement in 2007.

On May 10, Judge Moy announced he was making a $2 million gift to the Convalescent Center, prompted by his “deep desire to help seniors and disabled adults,” related to his own experience with his wife, who is battling Alzheimer’s disease. Moy said he

Caputo’s Fresh Market looks to remodel Asks for $750,000 sales tax break from Village

The Addison Building, Zoning and Development Committee heard a presentation from Caputo’s Fresh Market during their meeting on Monday, June 13.

Improvements to the store, located at 510 W Lake St., will include removal of the red roof and updating the store’s facade. The store entrance will also be moved east. A 10,000 square-foot addition for hot food will be built on the site currently occupied by the store’s garden center.

“Caputo’s wants to update the center, but mainly update the grocery store to compete with other grocery stores that are growing in the Chicago area,” said John Berley, Director of Community Development/Assistant Village Manager.

“A 10,000 square-foot addition is contemplated as well as interior upgrades to the store.”

The store was moved to its present location in 2002 and entered into a sales tax rebate agreement with

the Village. That agreement, which rebated $600,000 over the 15-year time frame, will expire in 2017.

Caputo’s requested a new sales tax rebate agreement with the Village of Addison with a cap of $750,000 over 15 years. The agreement calls for construction to be completed

by June of 2017. Additionally, the grocery store is seeking waiver of building permit fees. If approved, Caputo’s will also separately be seeking a liquor license to serve alcoholic beverages at the store and an outdoor dining permit, according to Berley.

“This is a trendy new thing you are seeing in stores now, they do it at some of their other locations,” he said.

Chairman McDermott asked if the signage in the shopping center would be included in the update.

“We plan to redo the stores signs on Lake and Mill, to update them and be more consistent over the entire shopping center,” said the Caputo’s representative.

The Committee voted unanimously to approve the project and recommend it to the Addison Village Board. The first reading of the Ordinance was scheduled for the Monday, June 20th Village Board meeting.

AECC Breakfast deemed successful The Addison Early Childhood Collaborative (AECC) held its third annual Community Breakfast on Friday, June 17 at the Addison Public Library. Among the participants were Chuck Wartman, Assistant Superintendent for Addison School District 4; Lenny Rivota, AECC Project Director for Metropolitan Family Service DuPage; and Kelly

VonZee, Community Engagement Head for the Addison Public Library.

Rivota introduced DuPage County Judge Robert Anderson who spoke about the impact education has early in a child’s life. Joanna Su, Community System Policy Director for the Illinois Governor’s Office of Early Childhood, then spoke about the importance of local collaboratives in a

community. Following Rivota and Wartman, Susan Barrons, Center Director of Kinder Care in Addison, and Marianne Pokorny, Child Care Resource and Referral Manager of YWCA, offered information about the AECC and the work that is being accomplished to ensure that all Addison children are safe, healthy and eager to learn.

Elmhurst Hospital’s new disinfection system deadly to ‘superbugs’ Elmhurst Hospital is now using a powerful new weapon against hospital-acquired infections – the Altapure HJ-30i high-level disinfection system. Altapure® targets highly drug-resistant organisms, such as Clostridium difficile (C. diff), that pose the most urgent threat and can survive on surfaces for weeks.

Top DHS officials exempted from ban on personal e-mail

Waivers reportedly given despite heightened security concerns cial government business.

The records were obtained in response to a February 2016 court order by the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia following a Judicial Watch Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit (Judicial Watch v. Department of Homeland Security (No. 1:15-cv-01772)).

The Judicial Watch lawsuit was filed in October 2015 after the Department of Homeland Security failed to comply with a July 2015 FOIA request.

Included among the records is a February 19, 2014 memorandum from security officials at the Department of Homeland Security strongly warning: “According to the Office of the Chief Information Officer, access to webmail using DHS networks is responsible for almost half of all attempts to compromise DHS network security.” The memo ex-

plains that webmail use resulted in 14 Trojan-Horse attacks in August 2013 and 25 attacks in December 2013 on Homeland Security computer networks.

As a result, in the same memo, Department of Homeland Security officials imposed a total ban on employee use of web-based email systems: “New restrictions are being implemented that will no longer allow employee access to personal webmail sites from government computers [Emphasis added]. Effective tonight, access to webmail sites like AOL, Hotmail, Comcast, Gmail, Yahoo, and other email services will be prohibited.”

This order came the same day a Bloomberg story was published regarding Homeland Security officials’ “bending the rules” on personal email use on government computers. The next day, Secretary Johnson’s webmail access also was blocked.

“Jeh Johnson and top officials at Homeland Security put the nation’s security at risk by using personal email despite significant security issues,” said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton.

According to a report released from the publication Judicial Watch, Secretary Jeh Johnson was granted a special waiver to access his personal email at work on the first day of the official ban. The practice continued even after then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton email revelations.

Judicial Watch announced last week it had obtained 693 pages of Department of Homeland Security records revealing that Secretary Jeh Johnson and 28 other agency officials used government computers to access personal web-based email accounts despite an agency-wide ban due to heightened security concerns.

The documents also reveal, according to Judicial Watch, that Homeland Security officials misled Rep. Scott Perry (R-PA) when he specifically asked whether personal accounts were being used for offi-

She learned to press the pedal to make the car go. It even had a reverse option and it was amazing how quickly she became proficient at backing up and maneuvering in tight spaces. As her parents, we were impressed (of course we were). She delighted in giving her little brother rides up and down the driveway, enjoying an independence not yet experienced.

Her third car was cute as a bug and her favorite color – yellow. It required a valid driver’s license, registration and gasoline. Footpower was no longer enough. She was 16, or in the words of her little brother, “almost a grown-up.” She continued to delight in giving her brothers rides – to exotic and exciting places that reached far beyond the driveway and most often served ice cream or French fries.

It was an independence not previously experienced.

Her fourth car was purchased

by her own volition and the cute yellow bug was passed down to a younger (and much taller, longlegged) brother. (We’re still not sure how he fits.) With her purchase, she learned about tax and license fees, along with loan rates, monthly payments, insurance, deductibles, comprehensive and collision – all responsibilities she hadn’t experienced before. She caught on to the new vocabulary words and terminology almost as quickly as she learned to maneuver in reverse when she was in kindergarten.

She still gives her brothers rides sometimes, but for the most part they drive themselves where they need to go. Like her, they are “almost grown-ups.”

Since she was 2, she’s been driving. And in a sense, driving away.

It’s how things are meant to be.

That’s the master plan, anyway; to have them become “almost grownups,” or at least grown up enough to leave and pay their own car insurance and find the independence they’ve been moving toward since they first crawled, or walked or peddled away on their own.

As she backs down the driveway and heads out on the big highway called life we know, although bittersweet, things are as they should be.

And when she comes back to visit, which we are counting on, it will not be bitter at all – only sweet. So. Very. Sweet.

I remember the day we bought her first car. It was promoted as being the best-selling vehicle in the U.S. that year and came complete with a flashy red body and a yellow roof. We brought it home and it sat on the driveway prinstinely clean, with that new car smell and all. It was a cute little coupe, with room for just two – passenger and driver. In a word, cozy.

There wasn’t any horsepower to speak of. More like foot power, Flintstone-style. She could barely see over the steering wheel and her feet could just reach the ground to push the little plastic car along the driveway.

The car was for our daughter.

She was 2 years old. It was a toy, but it gave her an independence not yet experienced. She loved opening and shutting the door and it was amazing how quickly she mastered the steering wheel. She pushed her feet against the cement, “driving” away from us, laughing with a new sense of freedom.

Her second car was a little red convertible. We bought it when she wasn’t yet old enough for kindergarten. She saved most of the money for it herself - from birthdays and other gifts. Pretty good for a preschooler. This second gem had an operational foot pedal and was battery-powered – a pretty gutsy

Spirito! Singers currently accepting auditions for 2016-17 Spirito! Singers, an elite choral organization located in the Western Suburbs of Chicago, is currently accepting auditions for the 2016-17 season for the Ragazze and Bravura ensembles.

The Ragazze Ensemble comprises girls between 5th and 8th grade, and the Bravura Ensemble features young women in the 9th-12th grade. Members are only admitted at the beginning of the season, so this is the only time of year members can join one of the most coveted musical ensembles in the area.

Fresh off of a highly successful season Spirito! continues to attract some of the area’s most talented voices. Drawing singers from throughout the Western Suburbs, including La Grange, Western Springs, Elmhurst, Hinsdale, Oak Brook, Westmont, Downers Grove and beyond, this respected choral society sings musically rich and challenging choral repertoire from a variety of genres.

In addition, its Ragazze Ensemble incorporates curriculum based music theory training as a part of its weekly rehearsals. All ensembles rehearse weekly with a schedule that mirrors the school year. Spirito! also puts the community first, providing members and their families with a number of opportunities to give back to the local community.

“Our goal is to not only create an environment for our girls to learn and experience exceptional repertoire, but to grow as musicians and to thrive within the community,” said Artistic Director Molly Lindberg. “We create an opportunity for our members to perform the music they love, while building civic awareness, and establishing friendships with other young women in the area.”

Committed to creating memorable experiences for its singers, Spirito! Singers-Bravura Ensemble just returned from a four-day excur-

sion to Nashville, TN. Combining performances and fun, the group of roughly 60 participants took in all of the music history Nashville has to offer, including touring the Country Music Hall of Fame, visiting the historic Ryman Theater, recording at Studio B and an impromptu performance on the stage at the Grand Ole Opry.

“Spirito! Is quickly becoming a staple organization throughout Chicagoland, which means we can create unforgettable opportunities for our girls within their ensembles,” said Lindberg. “We have a lot planned for next year and are so excited about the 2016-2017 season.”

All Spirito! auditions are held in a non-intimidating, and relaxed setting. Spirito! does not require preparation of an audition piece.

Below are a handful of the upcoming audition dates, though additional dates are avail-

able upon request. All auditions will be held at the Spirito! Office, located at 900 Jorie Blvd., #102 Oak Brook, IL 60523.

Since Spirito! Singers was founded in 2008, it and has quickly become one of the staple musical groups in the Chicagoland area.

The following is a list of citations and arrests written by the police at the Addison Roadside Safety Checkpoint held on Friday June 10 from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. at Addison Road and Moreland Avenue.

Total Citations/Arrests: 20 The goal of the checkpoint was to educate the public on the dangers of driving while impaired. While the checkpoint may be a brief inconvenience to motorists, the benefits to the motoring public outweigh the inconvenience. More than 550 drivers pulled up to the checkpoint. Only 147 of them were directed into the checkpoint. Most were back on their way in less than two minutes.

The Addison Police Department was happy to see there were no impaired motorists on the roadway in the vicinity of the safety checkpoint. Sports Willowbrook’s Betts earns outstanding male athlete honor High-honor roll student headed to St. Olaf’s to study pre-med

Recent Willowbrook graduate Lucas Betts hopes his time at the school as a student-athlete made a lasting impression.

Betts recently was named the Willowbrook Athletic Booster Club’s outstanding male athlete for the 2015-2016 school year.

But that award has much deeper meaning to Betts.

“It means a lot to me because I get a chance to be a good example to other up-and-coming students about what it really means to be a student-athlete, play multiple sports and excel academically in the classroom,” he said.

Betts played boys’ soccer and volleyball at Willowbrook. He was a three-year varsity performer on the soccer team and played two years of varsity volleyball. As a senior, he was a captain on both teams.

Betts earned all-West Suburban Conference Gold Division honors as a senior in soccer (he played center midfielder) and in volleyball (outside hitter). He also was named to the Chicago Fire all-state academic team as a senior.

“I like both sports equally,” he said. “I couldn’t pick between them, which is why I had to do both of them all four years.”

Betts started playing soccer at the age of five at the park-district level and then moved up to the club level. He still plays for the Lombard Typhoons club team.

“With soccer I really enjoyed the bond I had with my teammates,” he said. “I grew up with my fellow Typhoons players and some of them went on to play at Willowbrook. Our bond and chemistry was strong when we played, which is why we had a good winning season our senior year.”

Betts picked up volleyball in seventh grade at Jackson Middle School. “I liked how I really improved in volleyball because I didn’t play at the club level,” he said. “I liked improving with my teammates and helping them improve by working hard in practice.

We had some success because we put our strength together and improved as a team and improved our chemistry as a team.”

Betts was equally up to the task in the classroom at Willowbrook where he sported a 4.6 cumulative grade-point average and ranked sixth in the school’s senior class of 483 students.

“Studies always have been a great priority for me,” he said. “I wanted to learn as much as possible with the advanced-placement classes so I could get a head start in college. I know there still is a lot of work ahead for me.”

Betts is headed to St. Olaf in Minnesota to study and play club volleyball there.

“I am primarily focused on studying pre-med,” he said. “I’m looking at emergency medicine or radiology. I still have a lot of time to decide. I have a lot of family in medicine, a lot of nurses with my aunts and uncles and I have a cousin who is a doctor. I love the aspect of helping people in their greatest time of need.”

Looking back, Betts said his greatest sadness in leaving Willowbrook is remembering the athletic competitions he played in.

“I will miss the game nights,” he said. “I’ll miss the late nights with the soccer team under the lights on the field or being in the main gym for volleyball with a big crowd and playing as a team and working our hardest to get a win.”

Addison Trail baseball team seeing positives during summer season Coach Kennedy focuses on development

Forget the Addison Trail summer baseball team’s 0-5 record out of the gates.

Coach Mike Kennedy is looking at the bigger picture.

“We’re 0-5 right now but we are playing very competitive ball,” he said. “The summertime is for development. Some of our regular pitchers are pitching on their summer travel teams so that’s given other guys the opportunity to showcase their abilities. I’m very pleasantly surprised with how some of our younger guys are competing right now. Our last three games we’ve been losing by one or two runs. Different guys are getting work. It’s all a growth process and I’m happy with how we are playing so far.”

Kennedy also likes the competitive nature of his pitching staff. “We have guys pitching who aren’t in our top end of the rotation and could end up playing key roles as relief pitchers or spot starters,” he said. “They

are going in there and throwing the ball well and effectively. And hopefully that pushes guys and they are looking over their shoulder and thinking, ‘I better be good or someone is going to take my spot.’ Guys know they are competing for a spot in the rotation or a spot on the staff.

They are taking the ball and throwing it with authority. It’s been fun to watch them.”

Kennedy also is seeing his Blazers’ squad make strides at the plate.

“Our hitting is starting to come around as well,” he said.

In particular, Kennedy has seen good progress from the likes of Ricky Perez and Simon Marinelli.

“Ricky is off to a good start this summer,” said Kennedy. “He’s our returning center fielder and our No. 3 hitter. Ricky is as solid as they come. Simon is behind the plate and leading off for us. He’s been on a tear and continues to get better.”

Trevor Fulmer also has been a key offensive contributor. “Trevor has been swinging a good bat for us,” said Kennedy. “He pitches for his summer team as well. He’s at the top end of the rotation and swings the bat effectively.”

Senior-to-be Mitch Gomez has provided an additional spark. “Mitch

has been a pleasant surprise,” said Kennedy. “He’s a utility guy for us.

Last week he had games like 3-for-3, 3-for-4 and 2-for-3. He’s driving the ball, dropping a bunt down and did this playing third, short and second for us. With versatility like that going into his senior year, he’s going to be very enjoyable to watch grow into that role.”

Kennedy noted both Fulmer and standout pitcher Nick Villasenor recently played in the Chicagoland Showcase event representing the West Suburban Conference at Triton College. Fulmer played first base and Villasenor was on the pitching staff.

“Hopefully they will be back throwing for us this week,” said Kennedy late last week.

Addison Trail was scheduled to play Streamwood, Elgin Larkin and Geneva earlier this week.

“We aren’t putting the wins up yet like we would like, but it’s all about development right now,” said Kennedy. “Those juniors-to-be are getting accustomed to the speed of the varsity game. And our juniors last year are getting to take the reins as seniors. They have an opportunity to shine and they are taking the opportunity to do just that.”

Timothy Christian boys basketball team finishes strong at Braidwood Trojans win final three games of shootout

Things didn’t start out the greatest for the Timothy Christian boys basketball team at the recent Braidwood shootout at Reed-Custer High School.

The Trojans lost their first two games, but came back on the final day to win all three of their games and leave the event with positives to ponder.

“We lost the second game by two points and I don’t know if we should have lost that one,” said Timothy Christian coach Jack LeGrand. “But the guys came back and won the last three games.”

Timothy also has been playing in leagues at Riverside-Brookfield and Westmont. “It’s been a summer that has been packed full,” said LeGrand.

“Between camps and playing games, we’re going Tuesday through Saturday and we’re playing some good competition. At R-B, we’ve had a good summer so far.”

And LeGrand is seeing his team take steps forward. “The guys are showing flashes and playing very good basketball,” he said. “We have good chemistry and the kids share the ball well. The problem is trying to get consistency the entire game.”

LeGrand said one big boost has been the sophomore class that will be juniors this fall. “The juniors who were sophomores had a lot of success at the lower level,” he said. “It’s been fun watching them get acclimated to the bigger-school pace of varsity basketball. In our first game you saw that ‘eyes in headlights look’, but that’s long gone now.

They are getting better every day.”

Timothy has been led this summer by senior captain Joey Davidson.

“Joey is our leader and captain and is having a great summer so far,” said LeGrand. “He was a good leader for us last year.”

The Trojans also have been bolstered by the play of Jonny Strube and Trayvon Williams. “Both of them have played very well,” said LeGrand, who also lauded the contributions of returning seniors Nick Tameling and Jon Hoekstra.

Juniors-to-be Brandon Orange and Ty Merrick have come out strong this summer. “Brandon is 6-5 and has a real nice touch around the basket,” said LeGrand. “Ty also has been playing very good basketball.

He has a nice feel for the game. He sees the floor very well and does a lot of intangible things.”

Other contributors this summer include Michael Thomas, Michael Martens, Nick Huisman and Jimmy Allen. “Michael Thomas is playing good basketball,” said LeGrand.

“Michael Martens was on the state soccer team and is a good guard for us who has played good minutes.

The Willowbrook summer baseball team has picked things up in recent days.

The Warriors, who play two squads during summer doubleheaders, were 8-4 through their first 12 games after starting 4-3.

“We are playing good baseball right now,” said Willowbrook coach Vic Wisner. “Our first group hasn’t lost yet. Having the two groups helps build camaraderie and team chemistry. Everyone is getting to know each other.”

Wisner said keys during the summer have been no different than other years—being aggressive at the plate and turning in strong pitching performances.

“We are doing the little things like moving guys along and we are throwing the ball well,” he said. “We are getting guys on and moving them over. We’re seeing guys get more confident and getting better and better.”

“As always, we are throwing the ball well,” said Wisner.

In a recent doubleheader against Glenbard East, Wisner noted Ruchala took a 2-1 lead into the seventh inning, but found himself in a secondand-third jam with no outs.

“Vince got ahead in the count to the next batter and got the strikeout,” he said. “We intentionally walked the next guy (to load the bases) and Vince had a great changeup and he got a guy to beat the ball into the ground and we turned two and won the game. It was nicely done and cool to see.”

Wisner also cited recent strong play from Jack Hines (Will’s brother), Jon Kelso (center field), Kyle Ferguson (second baseman, threeyear varsity player) and Ben Espinoza.

“We have good talent at the underclass levels and we have good senior leaders,” said Wisner. “We lost some awesome kids that went out as seniors this spring. They taught these new seniors how to be leaders and how to run a team.”

Wisner has been especially impressed with Espinoza’s development. “Ben hit a huge homer for us against Glenbard East,” he said.

“He’s hitting about .600 for us and has two homers from the leadoff position. He has a .700 on-base percentage. He’s putting up crazy numbers. He’s always one of the hardestworking guys. It’s awesome to see a kid like that get rewarded.”

Wisner again lauded the work of his assistant coaches. “My coaches at the lower levels do a great job of getting guys ready to the point when they come up and expect to win,” he said.

Allen is a three-sport athlete for the Trojans. “Jimmy is very athletic and plays the three sports, so he’s only been with us a couple days,” said LeGrand. “He’s a piece to the puzzle for us as well.”

Timothy had shootouts on its remaining schedule at Westmont and Willowbrook. The Trojans also are wrapping up play in the R-B league.

“We are making progress,” said LeGrand. “And that starts with seeing more consistency. If we can be more consistent we can take the next step. We definitely are improved.”

According to organizers, Z Games is a sporting and cultural tradition that attracts amateur Zoroastrian athletes from around the world. The event includes competitive tournament brackets in basketball, volleyball, swimming, track, tennis, table tennis, and, for the first time ever,

golf.

“We look forward to welcoming new and returning Z Games athletes, fans and supporters to the beautiful city of Chicago for what promises to be an unforgettable four days of camaraderie and intense competition,” said Eric Elavia, who leads the Z Games 2016 operating team. “Our group has worked hard with the ZSC to put together a high-quality sporting and cultural experience for what can easily be considered one of the Zoroastrian community’s marquee international events.”

Counteract the fear and confusion with acts of kindness

M

aybe I’m a simpleton, but I still profess love is the answer. In the face of tragedy, terror, and events I cannot fathom or even begin to try to or want to understand, I do know that my response is up to me. That power can never be taken away. My reaction is always my choice.

I don’t know how to solve the problems of this world. I only know that I do not have to add to them. I don’t have to relentlessly talk about the madness. Rehashing the horrible events that occur does nothing to add new insight. There is never a satisfying “answer” to why someone would rape, murder, or hate.

The background of such a person can be said in one word: disturbed.

Something is not right within them; end of discussion. A privileged white male horrifically rapes a young woman. Oh, have you forgotten about that already in the wake of the Orlando nightclub attack? What about the shooting at UCLA? Or the Paris attack? Or….. no need to go on. One tragic event usurps the limelight of the previous one and we are off and running to argue and debate

the next topic of the moment.

We all agree that raping and killing and hating is wrong, yet we hate the attackers. We do. We hate. We stay in the energy of hate. Certainly the terrorists know that. They count on it. Fear and hate are more powerful than any gun or weapon.

With all the uproar on social media every time a new event takes center stage, the rhetoric is still the same. We want to tar and feather the bad guy. Somebody done somebody wrong so now let me go kill him and make it “right”. Many times the bad

guy blows himself up too or the police kill him, so we are happy. We feel avenged. He deserved to die, didn’t he?

We are wonderful armchair quarterbacks. We play judge, jury, and God all in one tweet. But is hate the answer? Does that stop the cycle? I shudder to think that there will be a new headliner atrocious event before this goes to print and our attention will be on yet another tragedy. But we know that to be the case.

Hate breeds hate. Fear breeds fear.

Distrust breeds distrust. No argument there. So why can’t it also be true that listening breeds listening?

Love breeds love. Calm breeds calm.

The very smallest of effort can have a ripple effect. Instead of joining the throngs of hate talk, I can stay quiet. I can simply send loving calm energy to all those who feel lost. I know that is why we join together in

these discussions, online and offline.

We seek comfort and answers.

The monsters have come out from under the bed and they are real and they hurt people. We feel a sense of panic, just like the little kid who is afraid of the monsters in the closet.

There is no reasoning with that child in that moment. Talk is futile. So what do you do? You simply hold your little one and quietly stroke their hair and calm them. Words don’t sway in this case. It is the quiet calming energy that shifts the mood and chases the fear away.

The state of the world may seem like chaos but we can chase the fear away. Instead of talking ourselves in circles, let us seek calm. Let us seek not to be up in arms, but to have outstretched arms. So many feel lost and hopeless in a world that doesn’t make sense. Counteract the fear and confusion with acts of kindness. No

matter how small or seemingly irrelevant, kindness can turn the tide one person, one neighborhood, and one community at a time.

How many times have you heard someone remark after a kind gesture that it is good to know there is still is good in the world? Now more than ever, we can be that force of good.

Yes, call me a simpleton, but join in this experiment. No need for words.

Tiny actions of compassion and caring are how we can soothe each other. That is how we once again believe in our fellow man.

Make eye contact. Smile. Hold a door. Show respect, compassion, and trust. Those tiny actions are indeed huge. We can turn the tide, one tiny act at a time. Let’s start now.

Who are the Zoroastrians?

Founded circa 1500 BCE, Zoroastrianism is credited to be one of the oldest monotheistic religion, influencing post-exilic Judaism, which adopted some Zoroastrian beliefs such as the ultimate victory of good over evil and the resurrection of souls.

These percepts were then transmitted through Judaism to Christianity, and later to Islam. Zoroastrianism flourished as the imperial religion of three Persian empires, those of the Achaemenians, Parthians and Sassanians, and was the dominant religion from Turkey, and eastward to China during those times. North America’s Zoroastrian community includes those who arrived from the Indian subcontinent, known as Parsis, and those who came directly from Iran seeking religious freedom.
