One suspect in alleged murder of 7-year-old girl briefly in Lombard Suspect at an apartment before allegedly fleeing Chicago police

A shooting at a west side Chicago McDonald’s drive-thru that left a 7-year-old Chicago girl, Jaslyn Adams, dead and her father, Jontae Adams, wounded Marion Lewis on April 18 made national headlines.

Devontay Anderson, 21, one of three suspects allegedly involved in

the shooting, has been charged with first-degree murder, but is believed to have fled Illinois and remains atlarge.

However, the other two suspects are in custody. Demond Gouty, 21 and Marion Lewis, 18, have been charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder and are being held without bond.

Donald’s showed a silver Audi pull up behind Adams’ car. Two men with hoodies covering their faces, alleged to be Anderson and Gouty, jumped out of the Audi and shot into Adams’ vehicle before getting back into the Audi. Lewis was allegedly driving the Audi.

Jaslyn was shot multiple times and pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital of Cook County, while Adams was shot in the abdomen and survived.

Lewis was the first suspect arrested on April 22, and the process of bringing Lewis to justice took Chicago undercover police officers into Lombard at one point that day.

According to CBS Channel 2, officers tracked Lewis through the suspect’s Facebook account to an apartment complex in Lombard where a female acquaintance of Lewis’ was living.

A silver Audi outside the apartment matched one that Lewis posted to a social media video before the shooting. That silver Audi also

matched the vehicle picked up on surveillance at the McDonalds drive-thru where Jaslyn was shot.

Chicago police said Lewis exited the apartment, got into a Dodge Durango that was allegedly stolen and fled from Chicago undercover police officers who were outside the apartment.

Police said that led to a high-speed chase eastbound on Roosevelt Road through Lombard, Villa Park and Oakbrook Terrace, and then onto the eastbound Eisenhower Expressway.

The suspect reportedly crashed the Durango into a median on the Eisenhower near Mannheim Road, but then police said Lewis ran from the scene and attempted to carjack an SUV with a family inside. Police arrived, and an officer fired on Lewis, wounding Lewis on the left shoulder.

Lewis was removed from the vehicle, was treated for the wound and arrested.

Afterward, the eastbound Eisen-

hower was closed between Mannheim and 25th Avenue for around five hours.

Police Chief Roy Newton said the Lombard Police Department was not directly involved in either the chase that ensued on Roosevelt Road or apprehending Lewis. He did say Chicago police notified the Lombard Police Department, telling Newton that officers were going to sit outside the apartment, wait for Lewis to come out and then try to take him into custody.

“He (Lewis) went into an apartment here, whether it was to hide out or what,” Newton said. “Chicago police, through their intel network, knew he was here and they notified us. When he (Lewis) came out (of the apartment), he ran to a car, got in and took off.”

Newton said Lombard police assisted the Chicago Police Department in searching the apartment after Chicago police obtained a search warrant.

Over 1 million COVID-19 vaccine doses administered to DuPage County residents

Bond set at $1 million for homeless man accused of road rage shooting DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Glen Ellyn Chief of Police Philip Norton have announced that bond has been set for a homeless man charged with shooting at a moving vehicle while traveling on Roosevelt Road in Glen Ellyn.

Carlos Pagan, 25, with a last known address in Waukegan, appeared in bond court where Judge Kenton Skarin set bond at $1 million with 10 percent to apply. Pagan has been charged with one Carlos Pagan count of aggravated discharge of a firearm, a Class 1 felony.

On June 4 at approximately 5:21 a.m., Glen Ellyn police officers responded to a call of shots fired near Roosevelt Road and Lambert Road.

Following an investigation into the matter led by the Glen Ellyn Police Department, it is alleged that the victim was traveling westbound on Roosevelt Road near Finley Road when a small black pick-up truck driven by Pagan cut him off.

It is alleged that the victim drove around Pagan and that once Pagan was behind him, Pagan rear-ended the victim causing damage to both vehicles.

It is further alleged that Pagan then passed the victim and positioned his truck in front of the victim. It is alleged that Pagan then slowed to a stop, put his truck into reverse and backed into the victim’s vehicle.

It is alleged that the two vehicles continued to drive westbound on Roosevelt Road and that near the intersection of Roosevelt Road and Park Boulevard, Pagan fired multiple shots out of the rear window of the truck at the victim’s car, striking the vehicle on the front hood, front grill and on the roof.

At approximately 5:38 a.m., officers located Pagan near the corner of Roosevelt Road and Lambert Road where he was taken into custody without incident.

“The recent increase in roadway shootings that we have experienced throughout the Chicago area is very alarming and in DuPage County this type of violent behavior will absolutely not be tolerated,” Berlin said.

Pagan’s next court date is scheduled for Monday, June 28, for arraignment in front of Judge Brian Telander.

Since COVID-19 vaccines became available in DuPage County on Dec. 17, 2020, approximately 1,005,620 COVID-19 vaccine doses have now been administered to DuPage County residents.

The DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) remains committed to educating and encouraging all eligible residents who are not yet vaccinated against COVID-19 to get their vaccination as soon as possible as Illinois moves to Phase 5 of the Restore Illinois Plan. The state fully reopened on Friday, June 11.

As of June 9, more than 51 percent, or 480,551, of all DuPage County residents have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Of those DuPage County residents 12 years and older who are currently eligible to be vaccinated, 70 percent have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose, and 61 percent have been fully vaccinated.

Additionally, 90 percent of DuPage County residents age 65 years and older have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose, and 87 percent are fully vaccinated.

In the past week, more than 27,000 vaccine doses were administered into the arms of DuPage County residents for a total of 1,005,620 doses.

Addison Trail welcomes new School Resource Officer A new School Resource Officer (SRO) is joining the team at Addison Trail – but he’s a familiar face to the community.

Marcus Rivera will succeed Larry Biles as the SRO, Detective who has been in Marcus Rivera that role since 2019. Rivera might be new to Addison Trail, but he has been with the Addison Police Department for 14 years and serves as a detective.

Growing up, Rivera saw firsthand the positive impact his father had on the lives of students as an eighth-

grade teacher, as well as his wife in the classroom as a sixth-grade teacher.

“I often express how proud I am of the work my father and wife do,” Rivera said. “Now I have the opportunity to do the same with our students at Addison Trail as the SRO.” Rivera has been shadowing Biles and also completed a week-long training to ensure he’s successful as Addison Trail’s SRO. He said he looks forward to working with the students, staff and community in his new position.

“When the 2021-22 school year begins, I want to show our students that behind the vest and badge is a person who can relate to them,” Rivera said. “My goal is for them to realize I am approachable. I hope the rapport that is built between the students and I will extend to my fellow officers as well, as I want to build a positive relationship between the police and our students.”

District 88 Superintendent Dr. Jean Barbanente said Addison Trail said she was pleased to welcome Rivera,

and knows he will continue the excellent work Biles and previous SROs have established.

“Our No. 1 priority is the safety and security of our students and staff, and the School Resource Officer position is a way for us to ensure the well-being of everyone in our building,” Barbanente said. “We look forward to working with Rivera and continuing our tremendous partnership with the Addison Police Department.”

Although Rivera’s job is to enforce the law and school policies, he knows the role encompasses so much more, and he is thrilled to help develop a culture of trust and understanding.

A complainant in the 300 block of N. Princeton told police at 3:38 a.m. that their unoccupied vehicle was fully engulfed in flames in the driveway away from the complainant’s house.

GOP leaders sue over new district maps

Case alleges use of ACS data unconstitutional

Republican leaders in the Illinois House and Senate filed a federal lawsuit Wednesday challenging the constitutionality of the new legislative district maps that Gov. JB Pritzker signed into law June 4.

Senate Minority Leader Dan McConchie, of Hawthorn Woods, and House Minority Leader Jim Durkin, of Western Springs, filed the suit in U.S. District Court in Chicago, arguing that the maps are based on survey data rather than official U.S. Census numbers and therefore violate the U.S. Constitution’s “one person, one vote” requirement.

“Today’s filing should come as no surprise to Illinoisans,” Durkin said in a news release. “The partisan process upon which the legislative maps were drawn flies in the face of strong recommendations made by countless advocacy groups and citizens who testified at the redistricting hearings.”

Durkin was referring to groups who urged lawmakers to wait for the release of official data from the 2020 census, which is due for release in mid-August. That, however, would have pushed lawmakers beyond the Illinois Constitution’s deadline of June 30 for the General Assembly to adopt maps before the process is turned over to a bipartisan commission.

So instead, House and Senate Democrats based the new maps on population estimates derived from the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey, which Republicans

and a number of voting rights advocacy groups, including the League of Women Voters of Illinois and Illinois Common Cause, argued is not accurate enough to be used for redistricting.

Democratic leaders also said they used data from previous elections to determine the partisan tilt of each district.

Throughout the process, Republicans pushed unsuccessfully for the appointment of an independent redistricting commission that would have been fashioned along the lines of one that was proposed in a 2016 constitutional amendment, but which the Illinois Supreme Court removed from the ballot that year under a legal technicality.

“Today we are entering court on behalf of the thousands of families, small business owners, workers, and taxpayers who said they wanted an independently drawn map, not the one handed down by political insiders desperately clinging to power,” McConchie said in the news release.

“We believe this is our best option to advocate for the 75 percent of voters who were refused an independent process and a map created with accurate data.”

During the spring legislative session, House and Senate redistricting committees held a series of more than 50 public hearings focusing on different areas of the state. Most of those hearings, however, were either virtual meetings or hybrid meetings

Police said officers responded to a retail theft that had just occurred at a store in the 1-100 block of W. St. Charles, and subsequently, Joseph A. A complainant reported that multiple areas around town were defaced by black, gray, white and red spraypaint by an unknown suspect.

June 1 Theft was reported at a fitness center in the 200 block of W. Roosevelt at 5:45 p.m. A complainant told police that their cellphone was removed from an unsecured locker by an unknown suspect.

May 31 Police said Rocky A. Berrier, 23, of Villa Park, was arrested on a failure to appear warrant out of DuPage County at 10:17 p.m.

Police said a suspect drilled a small hole from one motel room into another causing approximately $1,900 in damage at a hotel in the 1-100 block of W. Roosevelt at 1:17 p.m.

Burglary was reported in the 300 block of N. Cornell at 9:24 p.m. A complainant told police that their back door was kicked in by an unknown suspect. The complainant stated that nothing in the home

Former dentist gets 270 days in jail for practicing without a license May have to pay restitution to victims On Wednesday, June 9, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin announced that James D’Alise, 78, of Burr Ridge, has been sentenced to 270 days in the DuPage County Jail for practicing dentistry without a license.

Following a bench trial on Wednesday, May 26, Judge Monique O’Toole found D’Alise guilty of seven counts of Unlicensed Practice, a Class A Misdemeanor.

The verdict and sentencing stem from allegations that from Aug. 2018 through April 2019, D’Alise provided dental care to patients without a valid dental license at his Oak Brook office. On July 31, 2018, the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation revoked D’Alise’s dental license following an investigation into his practice prompted by hundreds of complaints from victims regarding D’Alise’s dental procedures and business practices. The investigation revealed that in addi-

tion to practicing without a license, several patients were forced to seek additional dental care at their own expense to repair work performed by D’Alise.

“When people visit their dentist, they expect that the dentist providing services to them is licensed and in good standing with the State,” Berlin said. “For one-and-one-half years, Mr. D’Alise ignored this requirement and will now be held accountable for his actions.”

D’Alise was taken into custody immediately following Wednesday’s proceedings to begin serving his sentence. He will be required to serve 50% of his sentence. In addition to his jail sentence, D’Alise was ordered to pay fines and court costs totaling $964 and will serve two years of conditional discharge following his release from custody.

On Thursday, July 29, D’Alise’s case will be in court for a hearing regarding restitution to his victims.

Montini Catholic High School has announced opportunities for grade school sports enthusiasts to develop skills and gain confidence and discover their passions.

Bronco Sports and Academic Summer Camps are still available for registration at Montini Catholic High School.

Camps offere a great opportunity for grade school sports enthusiasts to develop skills, gain confidence and discover their passions.

“Wherever one’s athletic interests lie, we are sure that they will find that there is something here for them,” said athletic director Tom Lentine. “We offer a wide variety of fundamental

camps for all ages, as well as specific camps in several sports. Our coaches really look forward to conducting our athletic camps each summer and are committed to working with campers to hone and improve their knowledge and skills. The House and Senate approved new maps on Friday, May 26, less than 24 hours after the final drafts had been introduced. Pritzker signed them into law a week later, on June 4.

The lawsuit alleges that the maps violate the equal protection clause of the 14th amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which federal courts have frequently cited as the basis for requiring state legislative districts to be drawn so they are substantially equal in population.

That has generally meant that districts cannot vary in population by more than 10 percent between the largest and smallest districts, but variations of less than 10 percent have also been found unconstitutional if the lines are drawn in an arbitrary or discriminatory manner.

McConchie and Durkin argue in their lawsuit that the use of survey data to craft the new maps resulted in districts that are both arbitrary in how they were drawn and discriminatory because the surveys that were used tend to undercount certain subgroups of the population.

They are asking the court to declare that the new maps violate the U.S. Constitution and for an injunction to prevent state officials from implementing the new maps.

In addition, they are asking that if valid maps are not adopted before the Illinois Constitution’s June 30 deadline, that the court either order the appointment of a bipartisan commission, as provided for in the Illinois Constitution, or appoint a special master to oversee the drafting of valid maps based on official 2020 census data.

The suit names House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch, of Hillside, Senate President Don Harmon, of Oak Park, and the Illinois State Board of Elections, along with its individual members, as defendants.

Sens. Omar Aquino, D-Chicago, who is chair of the Senate Redistricting Committee, and Elgie Sims, D-Chicago, who is vice chair of the Senate Redistricting Committee, issued a joint written statement June 9 stating they “stand by” their maps.

“It is disappointing but not surprising Republicans would seek to strike down these new maps, which reflect the great racial and geographic diversity of our state. Throughout this process, they have done nothing but delay and obstruct efforts to ensure our communities are fairly represented, as seen by their refusal to even draft their own proposals,” the statement reads.

As of June 9, the case had not yet been assigned to a federal judge.

ACA hosts free summer concerts on Tuesday evenings Aaah...Fresh air and music! Get your lawn chairs and coolers full of your favorite relaxing beverages (sorry, no liquor) ready for a summer of free music under the stars at the Addison Village Green Gazebo at One Friendship Plaza. The concerts are from 7 to 9 p.m. In case of rain these Tuesday night concerts will move inside to the Village Hall rotunda.

The Tuesday night concerts start on July 6 with the Reunion Jazz Orchestra.

The Reunion Jazz Orchestra has in its ranks doctors and architects, information technology professionals, music educators, executives, and entrepreneurs. The band has as authentic a swing as you’ll find anywhere, but it also plays ballads, progressive, some Latin, and some powerful big band rock.

The RJO is a volunteer alumni organization of Notre Dame High School that raises funds for their alma mater’s music program and scholarships.

Mancini and Ray Charles and the band showcases many fine soloists from all sections. One of their featured players, Cary Davids, moonlights as a nuclear physicist.

“Expanding qualified tuition plans supports working families as they explore education goals with their students,” Glowiak Hilton. “By creating a simpler path to afford tuition, our state is actively working to encourage more Illinoisans to enroll in higher education.”

The Villa Park Mariners did not compete in 2020. The swim team’s home venue— Jefferson Pool—was closed throughout last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Mariners are part of the DuPage Swim and Dive Conference, which canceled its entire 2020 season because of the pandemic. The Mariners returned to action with Saturday’s modified event at Jefferson Pool. The Mariners’ regular-season meets in the DuPage Swim and Dive Conference are normally dual meets between two teams. This year’s

meets will be virtual events. Teams will only swim at their home pools. Results will be scored against two other conference teams. The Mariners’ results from Saturday will be scored against teams that swim at a later date. A 2021 Willowbrook graduate, Braden delivered a ninth-place finish in the 400-meter run, which she completed in a personal-best time of 58.25 seconds. Ayala wins sectional title in discus throw Senior earns a berth in this week’s state meet

Willowbrook’s boys track and field team battled in Friday’s 16team IHSA Class 3A sectional at Hoffman Estates High School. Two Warriors—seniors Sergio Ayala and Enrique Cruz—secured state-meet berths with their performances at

the sectional. Ayala and Cruz will compete in this Saturday’s IHSA Class 3A state meet at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

Ayala won the sectional title in the discus throw. His best throw at the sectional traveled 47.35 meters.

Cruz earned his state-meet berth

with his second-place sectional effort in the shot put. His finest attempt at the sectional covered 16.23 meters.

Ayala delivered a sixth-place finish in the shot put at the sectional. His best attempt measured 15.09 meters. The Class 3A state-qualify-

ing standard in the shot put is 15.97 meters.

Cruz placed eighth in the sectional’s discus throw competition.

His best throw sailed 42.06 meters.

The Class 3A state-qualifying standard in the discus throw is 46.71 meters.

Illinois enters Phase 5, full reopening

Illinois began Phase 5 of the COVID-19 reopening plan June 11, meaning businesses and organizations can resume normal activity, although some limited restrictions will remain in place.

Under Phase 5 guidelines, capacity limits are being lifted for both indoor and outdoor activities while people who have been fully vaccinated are no longer required to wear face cov-

erings in most settings and businesses are no longer required to enforce mask mandates or maintain social distancing rules, although they may continue to do so if they choose.

People who have not been fully vaccinated are still encouraged to wear face coverings, and all people are still required to wear face coverings while traveling on public transportation, in congregate settings, in health care settings as well as in schools, day cares and educational institutions.

Those changes come 15 months after Gov. JB Pritzker first issued a disaster declaration in response to the pandemic which, as of June 10, had infected nearly 1.4 million people in Illinois and claimed 23,014 lives.

Due to the wide availability of vaccines, which first became publicly available in January, new infections and hospitalization rates have reached their lowest points since the pandemic began.

Health reported June 10 that 68 percent of Illinois adults had received at least one dose of vaccine and 51 percent were fully vaccinated.

IDPH also reported that only 366 new cases of COVID-19 had been detected in the previous 24 hours. That drove the seven-day average case positivity rate to just 1 percent, the lowest since the state started reporting daily test results.

As of late in the day June 9, 764 people in Illinois were reported to be hospitalized with COVID-19. Of those, 209 patients were in intensive care units, and 103 of those patients were on ventilators. That was the lowest number of hospital beds in use since the state began reporting the numbers as well.

During an interview with Capitol News Illinois last week, Pritzker said that even though the state was ready to enter the final reopening phase, he was not yet prepared to lift the disaster proclamation he first issued on March 9, 2020, which has served as the legal basis behind scores of executive orders such as a ban on residential evictions and utility shutoffs. It has been extended monthly since that date.

“It’s a new chapter, of course, in the pandemic but we aren’t quite ready yet to remove the disaster declaration,” Pritzker said.

“There are things that need to be ramped down and, you know, making sure of course that we actually are seeing continued decrease of cases and hospitalizations.”

The March 9 disaster declaration was followed on March 15 by an executive order closing K-12 schools to in-person learning. In the following days Pritzker issued an order closing bars and restaurants to on-premises service and, on March 20, a general stay-at-home order that effectively shut down major parts of the state’s

economy.

By April, the state’s unemployment rate had spiked to a modern-day high of 16.3 percent as tens of thousands of workers each week filed first-time unemployment claims. But as economic restrictions were gradually relaxed over the summer, the jobless rate began to subside, falling to 7.5 percent in October and, most recently, 7.1 percent in April.

Asked during his interview with CNI whether, in retrospect, he wished he would have handled things differently, Pritzker said he had to work with the information he had at the time.

“I can tell you that if I knew then what I know now, I’m sure I might have made some different decisions,” he said. “But that just wasn’t something available to me. What we had was a novel coronavirus.”

Pritzker added that just a few days before he issued the stay-at-home order he received projections—a copy of which he said remains on his desk—that said if the state took no action, Chicago alone would see 20,000 deaths from COVID-19 by August of that year.

“So we had to make decisions quickly. We had to be decisive about it,” he said. “I needed to be transparent and communicate at 188 press conferences during the year 2020. And it was my job to not only give people the facts, but do that in the face of the president in Washington, D.C., who was lying to people about this. And I think people needed to hear from somebody, somebody that they would be willing to listen to, that they trust.”

“And people did the right thing,” he added. “I mean, this is the amazing thing about Illinois, that we put the mitigations in place, and then people actually followed them and did the right thing, the result of which is many, many lives were saved.”

At Silverado Grill you can enjoy dining al fresco even when the weather is rainy. We have an outdoor patio that is completely undercover, including an awning so you don’t have to run indoors on a cloudy day or when sprinkles surprise us. We’ll also have additional patio tables with umbrellas outdoors. With plenty of parking available, dining al fresco at Silverado is the perfect place for gathering with family and friends all summer and into the fall.

The entire menu — from those tasty hand-carved steaks, juicy burgers, gourmet salads, and cold beer — is available to outdoor enthusiasts.

All steaks are carved on premises. All top sirloin cuts, strip cuts and filet cuts can be increased to the size the diner prefers. So if the 11-ounce top sirloin just doesn’t seem right to you, ask for a 16-oz. cut. It will be done on the spot. Steaks are hand-cut daily, so whatever you order, you know it will be fresh.

HB Jones features Elmhurst’s largest outdoor eating area with room for 100 diners in our main patio and 30 in our front patio.

Thursday nights at HB Jones have become an Elmhurst event featuring all 80 of our craft, domestic and draft beers for half price and live music on the patio. “Thursdays are a great night to sit at a table or at our outdoor bar and enjoy the weather and the tunes,” says the enigmatic Jones.

Local Elmhurst resident and Pit master Joey Calcagno is applying his passion to authentic slow smoked Texas BBQ. In 1976, Angelo Battaglia and his wife, Rosalia, purchased an Elmhurst storefront to start their restaurant.
