Addison Trail celebrates the graduation of its preschool class

Last month, parents/guardians and Addison Trail students and staff members gathered to celebrate the graduation of students in the school’s Little Blazer Preschool program. The preschoolers wore graduation caps and gowns and received a certificate for their hard work. After the ceremony, they enjoyed treats with their parents/guardians and the Addison Trail students who taught them during second semester. The 10 children in the class are from the surrounding communities.

They spent two mornings a week with the Little Blazer Preschool class, during which Addison Trail students conducted lessons in math, science, art, music, language arts and large/small muscle.

Registration for Addison Trail’s 2025-26 Little Blazer Preschool is open. What: The preschool class is taught by Addison Trail students in the Preschool I, Preschool II and Preschool Internship courses.

Participants experience lessons in math, science, art, music, language arts and large/small muscle.

When: The fall preschool session will run from SUBMITTED PHOTO Addison Independent October to December (nine weeks). Class will take place from 8:20 to 10 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. District 88 recognizes Board of Education president for being honored as an INSPRA Distinguished Service Celebration recipient During its May 19 meeting, the District 88 Board of Education, along with the administration, recognized and congratulated Board of Education President Donna Craft Cain for being named as a Distinguished Service Celebration (DSC) recipient by the Illinois Chapter of the National School Public Relations Association (INSPRA).

That program recognizes individuals and groups throughout the state who partner with their school communications

Craft Cain was honored during INSPRA’s annual DSC event on May 16 at Maggiano’s Little Italy in Oak Brook.

resent all stakeholders, while staying focused on what’s best for all students.

Craft Cain has served on the District 88 Board of Education since 2004 and has been board president since 2011. She also is an alumna of Willowbrook, is a parent of three district graduates and is a longtime resident and business owner in the District 88 community.

Those experiences enable her to see the district from various perspectives and excel as board president.

Glendale Heights man sentenced to life for 2021 murder DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin has announced that a former Glendale Heights man Richard has been Goodwin sentenced to two concurrent natural life sentences in the Illinois Department of Corrections for the 2021 murder of

Hanover Park resident Marek Krywko.

Richard Goodwin, 59, appeared in court in front of Judge Ann Celine O’Hallaren Walsh, who handed down the sentence. On Jan. 16, following a four-day-long trial, a jury found Goodwin guilty of four counts of first-degree murder and one count of aggravated battery with a firearm, a Class X Felony. On Aug. 31, 2021, Goodwin appeared in Bond Court where his bond was

set at $500,000 full cash, in accordance with a previously issued arrest warrant. He has remained in custody at the DuPage County Jail since that time.

On Aug. 2, 2021, at approximately 7:47 p.m., Hanover Park police officers responded to a residence on Pebblebeach Drive for a gunshot victim. As officers responded to the scene, a second call came for another gunshot victim, later identified as Marek Krywko,

at the same location.

Upon their arrival, officers located the initial victim outside the residence with a gunshot wound to her left thigh. Inside the residence, officers found Marek Krywko with a gunshot wound to his left thigh striking his femoral artery. First aid was administered to both victims, but Krywko remained unresponsive and was transported to a local hospital for medical attention. He was pronounced deceased a short

time later.

Following an investigation, authorities learned that Goodwin and two females were at the residence to purchase marijuana from Krywko. The investigation further found that when the female victim gave Goodwin a bottle of water, he shot her.

Goodwin then shot Krywko before fleeing the scene with the two females.

He was taken into custody on Aug. 25, 2021, from his home without incident.

New art programs for adults coming this summer The Bensenville Park District is introducing three new cultural and fine arts programs for adults ages 18 and over this summer, providing unique opportunities to connect with others while exploring personal creativity and wellness through art, dance and hands-on craftsmanship.

Starting June 19, Landscapes in the Park invites participants to embrace the beauty of nature while honing their artistic skills. Held from 10 a.m. to noon on Thursdays through July 10 at various scenic parks, the program offers guided drawing and painting sessions for artists of all skill

levels. The outdoor setting encourages mindfulness and relaxation while sparking creativity.

Those looking to stay active and meet new people can sign up for Social Dancing, offered every other Thursday evening from June 19 through July 31 in the Oak Room of the Deer

Grove Leisure Center.

This class explores a range of styles, including ballroom, swing and line dancing. Designed for all experience levels, the program promotes physical health, coordination and social engagement in a fun and supportive environment.

For a more hands-on artistic experience, Intro to Stained Glass will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. Mondays, July 14 through Aug. 4, in the Cedar Room of the Deer Grove Leisure Center. Participants will learn how to cut, shape and assemble vibrant glass designs while developing new skills and discovering a rewarding creative outlet. The class is perfect for beginners and seasoned crafters alike.

“These programs are a fantastic way for adults to explore their creative side, learn something new and enjoy a welcoming community atmosphere,” said Kaitlyn Whitehead, Cultural & Fine Arts supervisor for the Bensenville Park District. “We’re thrilled to offer something for everyone—whether it’s painting in the park, dancing to great music or creating something beautiful with stained glass.”

Blazer Battalion JROTC program participates in Addison Memorial Day Parade

On May 26, Addison Trail students participated in the Village of Addison’s annual Memorial Day events. Twenty-two members of Addison Trail’s new Blazer Battalion U.S. Army Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) program (which was implemented earlier this past school year) marched in the Memorial Day Parade and displayed their skills. The students (referred to as cadets) also posted the flags and placed wreaths representing the branches of the military at Saint Paul Lutheran Cemetery, along with members of the Addison VFW Post 7446. The group was commanded by Cadet/Lieutenant Colonel Sophia Barragan (class of 2026). “They represented Addison Trail, the U.S. Army, their parents and themselves with the utmost respect and professionalism,” said MSG William E. Slices of life

The increments of life We measure things in increments. A cup of flour. A glass of wine. 98.6 degrees for a normal human body temperature. A standard sheet of paper is 8.5 by 11 inches.

The wind is blowing at 11 miles per hour. You fill your tires to 33 pounds per inch.

The barometric pressure at my house right now is 30. A pound of butter weighs in at 16 ounces. So does a pound of feathers and a pound of concrete.

So many numbers, so little time.

And therein lies the topic of this column.

But I’m getting ahead of myself. This column is about numbers, but it isn’t, really.

It’s about time. Your time.

My time. We measure life in increments of time.

I read somewhere that humans are battling time.

We each are granted a finite amount of it on this earth.

Therein lies the war.

We can’t know how long our time will be, exactly, but we can look at averages.

The life expectancy of the average human in the United States right now is 77.5 years.

That equates to 930 months, 4,030 weeks or 28,210 days.

That means each of us, on average, can expect about 28,210 days on this earth.

(Even though each of us knows we are certainly not average.)

Of those days, and weeks, 18 years are spent in childhood.

Childhood is a wonderful time of growth and jejunity.

I’ve often heard the phrase that youth is wasted on the young.

I’m not saying childhood is a waste (just the opposite, in fact.) But for the purposes of this discussion, let’s consider time on earth spent as an adult.

Adult life begins at 18, so if we consider just our adult life we each have about 3,094 weeks.

We sleep about eight hours each night, or the equivalent of one-third of our time on earth.

If we take sleep out of our equation, we have 14,439 days of awake time. (About 2,063 weeks, if we are counting.)

Most people work about 40 hours a week from age 18 to (optimistically) 65. You can have lots of fun at work, but it’s still “work” so if you minus that time out, you are left with 1,481 weeks. Those make up roughly 10,367 days That makes 248,808 hours,

which sounds like a lot until you do the math a little further and realize it equates to 341.7 months, or about 28.5 years.

When you break it down like this, life doesn’t seem so infinite anymore.

And simply realizing that is pretty monumental.

I lived most of my life as though I had an infinite number of days, because it felt that way.

But then.

But then you graduate from high school and while you probably don’t think about it at the time, you will never, ever be there or do that again, and high school is a pretty big time in life.

But then you fall in love and get married and both life and love feel big and tall and wide. And somehow you find yourself celebrating your 30th birthday and you feel older, until your 40th birthday, when you feel a new version of older. And you think about it, but don’t really think about it; you’ll never be 30 or 40 ever again. And then 50. And so on.

Amongst all this, the weeks are being spent. And if you are like me, you remain oblivious.

And maybe that’s how it rolls all the way to the end. Or maybe something happens, somewhere along the way, to change you—to alter the way to see things in the most fundamental of ways.

And maybe you start living life like it is finite rather than infinite.

Like every week, every day, every hour, every moment, truly matters.

Because it does.

You might think this all sounds depressing, but I propose that when you really grasp the truth of time, it is the exact opposite of depressing.

It is enlightening and liberating. It is like learning to fly because you suddenly realize you had wings all along.

Trump’s cuts will make our communities less safe; Illinois legislators must act

By Rev. Violet Johnicker and Pastor G. Joseph Mitchell President Donald Trump and the Republican Party appear committed to making us less safe.

The Trump administration has cut at least $811 million in funding that supported domestic violence victims, community violence intervention, systeminvolved kids, and those suffering from addiction; gutted SAMSHA, the agency that administers the National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline; and massively downsized the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, where critical violence prevention research was occurring.

This president and members of the unelected DOGE seem hellbent on devastating communities and creating chaos, which could pave the way for more policing, more prosecution, and more people in jail and prisons.

The only people capable of filling the hole left by the federal government and protecting safety are our state elected officials. They, too, are responsible for keeping us safe, supporting victims and preventing violence.

And they, too, have large

budgets where officials can shift priorities to ensure that protecting the health and safety of communities is at the top. Unfortunately, Illinois, although a resistor of this administration in many ways, is falling short in its public safety responsibilities. If it doesn’t change, we will all suffer.

Illinois is set to cut key public health and safety programming at a time when more support is needed.

For example, the Illinois Department of Public Health and the Illinois Department of Human Services plan to cut funding for mental health and substance use treatment because the state is losing federal funding. Illinois’s own budget proposal takes away health care from immigrant adults, and fails to adequately increase funding for homeless services and health services for all.

Illinois is failing to step up.

As faith leaders, we denounce these proposed cuts and call upon our elected officials to invest in services for those most in need.

Gov. JB Pritzker recognizes that “[t]his decision to terminate already awarded federal funding will cause immeasurable harm and disruption to the health and safety of the people of Illinois and generate larger expenses in the longer run.”

He is right, and we should also applaud him for his consistent opposition to the Trump administration, something

an insufficient number of politicians are doing. But right now, his actions on the budget do not reflect the urgency we need in this moment, and the long-term consequences will be morally repugnant and economically costly, as he himself said.

We don’t have unlimited money, but there are solutions.

Ultimately, the state must consider new progressive sources of revenue. In the meantime, one way to free up budget space is to rightsize other spending areas.

The state has allocated $452 million for state police who work alongside large police departments that exist throughout the state and local levels and are well-funded (and receive federal support). It also has budgeted over $2 billion in spending for our correctional system, including an additional $900 million to create new prisons even though everyone previously incarcerated at the shuttered Stateville prison has been safely rehoused elsewhere without creating overcrowding. Illinois does not need so many people in its prisons, and it does not need so many people locked up for what often amount to small offenses. Investing in treatment and a safety net support would keep us far safer.

What we cannot do is what the Trump administration wants us to do—revert to more policing and incarceration when crime inevitably spikes because of these cuts.

Trump is trying to destabilize

our communities so that people’s situations become so dire that chaos ensues and crime increases. Then, the administration can sweep in and justify even more authoritarian measures and retain power under the guise of locking people up “to keep us safe.”

We know from decades of research where this will lead—we tried it in the 1980s.

Such policies and investments won’t stop crime, but they will lead to entire generations of Black men incarcerated, followed by far too many mothers, children, and other vulnerable people who will have their lives destroyed.

Communities are still feeling the long-term devastation from the policy choices of the past.

If we naively choose to repeat those mistakes, we will never recover.

Right now, leaders from Illinois are in many ways modeling what it means to stand up to an authoritarian, lawless administration. We are proud to live here. But if our leaders do not do the same with their budget, then in the end they will have failed to protect us. We know they can rise to the occasion and look forward to seeing the results.

Northwest Lombard calling. To the person(s) who left the two bags of dog waste in my garbage can, while I thank you for at least picking it up, I definitely did not appreciate your stinking up my garbage can. *** Did Elon Musk not think his buddy Trump would eventually turn on him? I was a Trump supporter only because I couldn’t stand the thought of Kamala Giggles Harris being our president, and thinking we would get the first-term Trump back, but now, he has turned into an arrogant tyrant who is just plowing through and over anyone who disagrees with or criticizes him; and taking away funding where it is needed. I am guessing his Cabinet and other Republicans are too afraid to try to wrangle him back in line, for fear of losing their jobs. Well, I would rather face that possibility and be a martyr than a kiss-Trump’sbehind kind of legislator. Remember who elected you, and do your job, even if it means an “intervention” to bring the president back to reality. *** There is a fair amount of talk on Facebook about parents who intend to let their kids continue riding e-scooters, despite now knowing about the law prohibiting riders under the age of 18— which I don’t agree with but it is the law. I wouldn’t rat out kids riding e-scooters on the sidewalks around my neighborhood, but near-misses are being reported all over town on the streets and intersec-

tions. What kind of lesson is that when parents are teaching their kids it’s okay to break the law? Instead, maybe use that energy to rally together and convince your representatives to lower the legal age, and maybe that will teach your kids a different kind of lesson. *** So Trump is fighting several different court orders to keep doing his illegal “executive orders.” I hope “Trumpers” are starting to realize he said he would take apart our country and he is doing it—to all of us! *** True story, only in America.

I sent a small package through the United States Postal Service. I paid $33 to send it to Belfast, Ireland, on Jan. 7 of this year. The tracking indicates the package went to Chicago, Newark, Dublin, New York, Indianapolis, Chicago, New York, Dublin, Newark, Indianapolis, Denver, Phoenix, Los Angeles then to Chicago. The package was returned to me on April 26, after 109 days, not delivered. I have not gotten my money back. It’s an amazing trip for this package. I would trade the refund of my money for the frequent flier miles! *** I read with enthusiasm the short piece by the contributor in the May 29 edition of Speak Out recognizing the sad state of affairs of Americans who have very little knowledge of the facts of our governments, both nationally and local. dig deeper on this critical issue. Yes, people vote on emotions, not reality. Our state legislators, as of this writing, have been “hard at work” (last minute efforts as usual) in Springfield to pass bills that they deem we need, not bills that we want (assisted suicide; more firearms restrictions toward law-abiding citizens, not criminals; more possible budget shortfalls which will result in more taxation, and the list goes on). They often use legislative “tricks” to bypass legislative rules then get, again, what they want passed, usually against the majority of their constituents’ wishes.

But they know better than us, of course, what is best for us commoners. Get informed, get involved, especially locally, and hold their feet to the fire for accountability. Yes, it’s more important than your sports teams. The worst scenario for them is to get voted out. *** What do the elected officials in Illinois do all year?

They always wait until literally the last minute to pass a budget. A $55 billion budget is passed by both houses without any legislator having time to read or question what’s in it. That’s wrong. That is irresponsible. Illinois does not have a revenue problem, it has a spending problem. The state budget has gone up $15 billion in six years! This has to stop, but it won’t. The same tax-and-spend politicians keep getting re-elected. That’s the definition of insanity. *** Many of us were born and branded Democrats because our parents and grandparents were Democrats. The Demo-

crat Party has changed to the point is not about what is best for America but a gross power grab. Criticizing everything president Trump does and not having any platform of our own is not going to win future elections. Our last four years have been a disaster. Let’s wake up before it’s too late. *** Hi, I was just reading the June 5 Speak Out and someone was talking about mailing something from the Lombard Post Office. I mean, we all know we don’t do that; but my problem is, what happens when you live in Lombard and they have to deliver your mail? That does not work out very well. I mean yes, I’ve gone to Villa Park for years because I want the person that I’m sending the mail to get it.

The total so far is about 300,000 people according to Boston University Infectious Disease Department.

No, Mr./Ms. self-entitled snowflake, I don’t believe many out here (though there may be a few) believe that just because they choose to self-checkout and, heaven forbid, bag their own groceries, they are entitled to a discount. I prefer self-check-out.

As for you, if you told me that to my face, I would just laugh in your face at your ridiculous remarks. Suck it up, powder puff; either stand in line and get a life, or dig deep within your inner self, hum a mantra, and bag your own groceries.

Self-entitlement is one of the cancers of our society. I suggest to stop, “just saying.”

Bye. *** I can understand gas prices varying from town to town because of local taxes, but I find it confusing that a gas station, say on North Avenue, and the same one on Roosevelt—both in Lombard—have prices with as much as 20 cents a gallon difference. Gas stations in general along North Avenue are higher than those on St. Charles and Roosevelt, where the gas taxes are all the same. And don’t get me started about how Wisconsin’s gas is so much cheaper, and even in Indiana it was 30 cents a gallon cheaper a week or so ago. Brace yourselves for a gas tax increase come July and also gas price increases for the “summer blend,” if it hasn’t been imposed already. *** I find it interesting how JB Pritzker blames Trump for the state’s fiscal challenges. The state budget has gone from

$40 billion to $55 billion on your watch, so you own this, Mr. Pritzker! That’s right! In January of 2023, their salaries went from $73,345 to $85,000.

Since 2023, their salaries have steadily increased to $93,712. Now, as part of this big, beautiful $55.2 billion Illinois budget that is over 3,000 pages long, the pay for state reps and senators will be $98,304 a year. Let that sink in—they have received nearly $25,000 in raises in 2½ years! I think it’s a slap in the face to average constituents.

Many of us are lucky to get an annual cost-of-living pay increase, and we continue to struggle to make ends meet.

But we will be footing the bill to cover their excessive pay raises. Next year, I plan to vote for whoever opposes my state rep and senator. If my state rep and senator run unopposed, I’ll make sure to leave their spot on my ballot blank. When they send me campaign literature telling me how hunky-dory everything is in this state because of what they’re doing, I won’t even look at it. It will all get tossed.

Lt. Dan Band will be ‘ROCKIN’ FOR OUR VETS’ at Cantigny July 12 WSFDV, Gary Sinise fundraiser to honor our troops, veterans

Michelle Senatore has a deep affection for our nation’s military and veterans; so much so that she launched a nonprofit foundation to help those individuals who have sustained a service-related disability.

As the Wheaton resident tells it, back in 2004, she was invited to a ceremony to welcome home one of Wheaton’s own—Wheaton Warrenville High School graduate U.S. Army Sgt. Joel Gomez, who was injured in the Iraq War. After the event, Gomez asked her to stick around so he could tell her his story.

Senatore went on to learn that Gomez, confined to a wheelchair, was living in a basement apartment, with essentially a plank of wood for a wheelchair ramp.

Gomez’s was “one of the first really big stories of the war in Iraq,” Senatore re-

called.

“There was no way this hero should live like that,” she remembers thinking, and the seeds of the nonprofit West Suburban Foundation for Disabled Veterans, or WSFDV, were planted.

Senatore, WSFDV co-founder and president (along with Robert Quinn, co-founder and vice president), said another significant event that led her to form the WSFDV was the death of U.S. Marine Lance Cpl. Nicholas Larson—a graduate of Wheaton North High School—which also hit close to home.

“He paid the ultimate sacrifice,” she emphasized.

Her vision was for Gomez to be able to live in a wheelchair friendly home, and “the community wanted to help,” so fundraisers such as a wheelchair basketball game

and contributions from local VFWs and fire departments, as well as contacts in the construction business, made that home a reality for the disabled veteran, also thanks to Airhart Construction.

“We had help from everywhere,” she noted, including Dick Portillo, then-owner of Portillo’s restaurant chain, who contributed funding for a wheelchair-accessible van.

Besides continuing to care for Gomez, who passed away in 2022, the WSFDV has assisted with mental health care and utility bills on a small scale, because, as Senatore explained, “We’ve worked very hard to stay a small, community foundation,” with a focus on veterans who have a disability rating from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

In doing so, the WSFDV has built relationships and networking opportunities with other local organizations, she said, because “we’re all community charities.”

The inspiration to have actor Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band perform at Cantigny came from the founder of another organization dedicated to veterans—Deb

Rikert (now retired), who launched Operation Support Our Troops-America in 2003.

She had arranged for Sinise to perform at Cantigny.

Senatore, who got to know Rikert, said she reached out to her in 2023. They both wondered, “Wouldn’t it be great to have Gary back?”

“We’ve been working toward this idea for quite some time,” she continued, adding that after speaking with Sinise’s people, “Last September I got the call!”

Senatore gave kudos to Lombard’s VFW Lilac Post #5815 after members made a public service video that was sent to Sinise not long before she got that call.

The WSFDV has been planning for the July 12 concert since January, Senatore outlined. “It’s quite a task but it’s exciting.”

It is “a very rare treat,” she added. “We’re very grateful.”

Senatore said that in honor of the WSFDV’s 20th anniversary, proceeds will be shared with 20 local organizations which also assist disabled veterans in some way.

One of them is the Lombard-based nonprofit Guardian Corps of America (GCA,

usaguardian.org), which assists homeless veterans and other homeless individuals by providing basic necessities.

GCA founder and Executive Director Anthony La Piana said his organization has been helping promote the concert, adding gratefully that “GCA will receive tremendous exposure to the public.”

“Also to be a part of such an important event for our homeless veterans and veterans in need is exactly what GCA is doing for those veterans,” he added.

“It is a great opportunity and we really do not know when Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band will be back in our area [DuPage County].

Therefore to be a part of a select group of charities is an honor,” La Piana commented.

“The Rockin’ for Our Vets Concert will be a memorable event!”

La Piana praised Senatore for her work, saying, “She’s doing a great job. She’s really working hard.”

Sinise, on his website (www.garysinisefoundation. org), explained of his foundation that “My life’s mission has been to honor and support our nation’s veterans,

service men and women, first responders, our most severely wounded heroes, the families of our fallen and those suffering from the invisible wounds of war.”

When asked why she has dedicated herself to helping veterans, Senatore said she comes from a multi-generational family of veterans, including her late father, who was a Vietnam veteran.

The way she was raised, it was considered “our job as American citizens to take care of those who have served.”

The concert Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band will celebrate and entertain our heroes and their families at Cantigny on Saturday, July 12. Gates open at 2 p.m.; the opening act, Stolen Silver, begins at 6 p.m. Tickets are $54 (including a $4 fee), and are now on sale. All proceeds will benefit the WSFDV. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Joseph, son-in-law Daniel Ehlers and seven brothers and sisters. She is survived by Michael (Patricia) Doran, Maureen Ehlers, Patrick (Carolyn) Doran, Kevin (Lisa) Doran and Colleen (Robert) Schuelke. She leaves behind her 13 grandchildren Sean Doran, Kelly (Joel) Adams, Bridget Doran, Molly (Michael) Mayor, Brendan Ehlers, Bryce Ehlers, Hannah Doran, Colin Doran, Sarah Doran, Jack (fiancée Hannah Byrom) Doran, Katie Doran, Ronan Schuelke and Erin Schuelke. She was the proud great grandma to Levi and Mabelle Adams as well as an aunt to countless nieces and nephews.

Kathleen was a native of Arranmore Island, County Donegal, Ireland, where she left home and moved to Scotland as a teenager, eventually being sponsored by an aunt in Chicago and immigrating to the States.

Once in Chicago, she met the love of her life Joseph, married, had five children and ended up in Lombard in 1965 in the same house on Edson Place she proudly raised the kids and took care of until the day she died.

Even at 90, she was still cutting her own grass, shoveling the driveway and bringing up everybody’s trash cans on garbage day much to the disbelief of her neighbors. She was loved and adored by many and will be greatly missed.

She never understood why people loved to hear her talk in that lovely Irish brogue she claimed wasn’t there.

The DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) has confirmed the first mosquito batches to test positive for West Nile virus (WNV) this year in DuPage County.

The first WNV-positive pools of mosquitoes were collected in Roselle, Medinah, Clarendon Hills, and Burr Ridge on May 27.

Illinois State Police deploys new command vehicle

The Illinois State Police (ISP) have announced the deployment of a new state-of-the-art command vehicle designed to improve emergency response coordination, enhance public safety, and provide crucial on-site support during critical incidents across the state. ​The command vehicle was provided by the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Radiological Security. The new command vehicle, a 2025 Freightliner, replaces an 18-year-old vehicle with antiquated technology. The new command vehicle is equipped with high-definition cameras and monitors, state-of-the-art communications technology, real-time data access, and dual slide outs for a large conference room. It will serve as a central hub for ISP officers during emergencies such as natural disasters, large-scale accidents, public events, and search-and-rescue operations. Beyond emergency situations, and to further strengthen the connection between ISP and the people it serves, the new command vehicle will be used for community outreach programs, safety demonstrations, and public events. Additionally, the vehicle will be used for training ISP officers on response to hazardous materials incidents.

IDOT seeks public’s help to ‘Put a Lid on Litter!’

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is once again asking the public to be on the alert for crews picking up litter across the state, encouraging everyone to help keep Illinois roads clean and protect the environment by putting trash where it belongs and remembering to “Put a Lid on Litter!”

“Just a little litter might seem harmless, but it can create a big, expensive problem,” said Illinois Transportation Acting Secretary Gia Biagi.

“At IDOT, we’re determined to put a lid on litter, but we need your help. Hang onto your garbage until you can get to a trash can. Tie down loads and cargo that can get caught in the wind. Let’s work together and keep our state and our communities litter free.”

Last year, IDOT spent approximately $26.9 million statewide picking up litter and removing large debris. That’s the equivalent of buying 100 maintenance trucks that also plow snow in winter or purchasing all of the salt that IDOT spreads in an average winter, with money left to spare. It also could pay to resurface 22 miles of interstate

Litter comes with hidden costs as well, including blocking drainage systems that prevent flooding, harming critical landscaping and putting the public’s safety at risk.

During the warmer months and when weather permits, with operations ramping up in the spring, IDOT will deploy teams dedicated to litter removal, focusing on ramps, interchanges and known problem areas. Although lane closures will not be required, equipment and workers may be present on the shoulders.

If you encounter maintenance vehicles and workers, please

slow down, move over and give them space—it’s the law.

While IDOT is committed to maintaining a positive impression of the state by keeping its more than 150,000 miles of roadsides clean, the public can play a part as well.

Remember to use bags and receptacles in your vehicle to collect and dispose of trash.

Consider reusable bags for shopping and refillable bottles for beverages to cut down on waste. Properly secure loads with rope, straps, tarps and netting.

Litter facts Roadside litter causes distractions that can lead to dangerous crashes. It also requires maintenance operations that put workers in potentially hazardous situations amid live traffic.

Litter kills plants and animals. It’s also unsightly. No one likes litter in their community.

Littering is illegal and subject to a fine of up to $1,500 in Illinois. In addition to other penalties, violators may be required to maintain litter control over a portion of highway for 30 days. (415 ILCS 105/5)

Loads must be tarped and secured, with permits required for certain cargo. Violators can face penalties that include a fine up to $250 in Illinois. (625 ILCS 5/15-109) Littering is a problem that’s easily controlled and preventable. You wouldn’t throw garbage on your front lawn. Use a trash can instead.

Last year, volunteer groups in IDOT’s Adopt-A-Highway program reported that they logged 794 hours with 1,928 volunteers helping with cleanup activities. More than 1,700 bags of garbage were collected, with a kitchen sink, sardines, car parts and a fake $100 bill among the items collected and properly disposed.

Glenbard District 87 names new assistant superintendent and director of communications On May 27, the Glenbard To w n s h i p High School District 87 Board of Education appointed Dr. LeViis Haney as assistant suTyler perintendent Carter for Teaching and Learning and Tyler Carter as director of Communications.

Both appointments are effective July 1.

“I am deeply honored to join Glenbard District 87 as the Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning,” Haney said. “Glenbard has a strong reputation for academic excellence, and I am excited to build on that foundation by advancing educational equity, fostering innovation, and strengthening community partnerships. I believe every

student—regardless of background, identity, or life experience—deserves access to high-quality, engaging learning Dr. LeViis that prepares Haney them for a meaningful future. I look forward to collaborating with our educators, families, and community members to create inclusive, forward-thinking learning environments where all students can thrive.”

Haney has served as the director of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion at Stevenson High School District 125 since 2020. He is also an adjunct professor at both Loyola University Chicago and Northeastern Illinois University.

Haney has been featured in

several professional publications and has delivered presentations across the country on the implementation of personalized learning models and transforming school culture.

His prior administrative experience in the Chicago area includes serving as principal at Rich Central High School (2019-20), The Joseph Sears School (2018-19) and Joseph Lovett Elementary School (2012-18).

Haney’s educational career began in the classroom, teaching middle school social studies and language arts at Hayt Elementary School in Chicago. He went on to assume the dual roles of history teacher and dean of students at Best Practice High School.

Incoming Glenbard Superintendent Jessica Santee said, “We are thrilled to welcome Dr. LeViis Haney to Glenbard District 87 as assistant sSu-

Haney earned his doctorate in administration and supervision from Loyola University Chicago. He also holds a master’s degree in administration and supervision and a bachelor’s degree in history, both from Northeastern Illinois University.

Carter arrives in Glenbard following a six-year tenure with the Columbus City Schools in Columbus, Ohio.

She was the executive director of Communications (2023-25) for the largest public school district in the state, which serves 46,000 students across 113 schools.

In her role as executive di-

rector, Carter oversaw internal and external communications, media relations, crisis communications and digital social media strategy. She first joined the district in 2019 as the Multimedia Digital Content producer.

“I’m honored to join Glenbard Township High School District 87 as director of Communications and thrilled to return home to Illinois,” Carter said. “I’m especially excited to become part of an educational community that is deeply committed to preparing students for the future—one that values career exploration, innovation, and helping every student find their path. Under the bill, if the FDA pulled its approval of a drug any time after Jan. 1, 2025, it can’t be considered “adulterated” as long as it’s still recommended by the WHO. “This current administration has made it very clear that there are certain drugs that they would like to pull approval from,” Avelar said.

When a drug is considered adulterated, that means it’s generally not normal or made to “conform with good manufacturing practice,” like an FDA approved drug.

Doctors, nurses and other medical providers can lose their licenses for providing adulterated drugs.

But the bill would make it so the providers would not be subject to the penalties provided in law for prescribing such drugs.

House Bill 3637 aims to protect medical providers who prescribe drugs that were previously approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration but had the approval revoked, provided the drug is still recommended by the World Health Organization.

The bill is part of a larger trend of blue states adopting “shield” laws—legislation guaranteeing the legal backing of medical providers from federal and interstate litigation, typically over abortion medications or vaccinations.

Local P.E.O. chapter awards scholarship to recent Glenbard East graduate P.E.O. Chapter IR-Lombard recently awarded its annual scholarship to Brissa Sarabia, who recently graduated from Glenbard East High School. Brissa will be attending Elmhurst University and majoring in Business Administration this fall.

Experience in AP classes such as Economics and Environmental Science has led Brissa to dream about starting her own business in land management. She credits her years of working in her family’s landscaping business as the motivation to make that her life’s work.

Brissa, an outstanding student, is quick to praise the

Glenbard East instructors for encouraging her to build her academic foundation and her communication skills.

In Brissa’s own words, “My relationships with my peers and the unfailing support of my instructors, have been invaluable, in making the most of my time at East. I am driven to make the most of my opportunities and I’m ready to take the next step.”

Brissa’s Glenbard East High School’s activities include being a member of the Glenbard East Principal Advisory Committee, basketball, all conference honors in girls varsity soccer and cross country and nominee for member-

ship of the Girls Committee of the Illinois Council on Women and Girls in Springfield.

Brissa commented that the connection with teammates to achieve a common goal and shared memories on and off the athletic fields, are major benefits of her participation in her various athletic activities.

The P.E.O. International Sisterhood maintains six educational projects in the form of grants, scholarships and loans, as well as the stewardship of Cottey College, a liberal arts and sciences college for women in Nevada, Missouri, which has been owned/ supported by P.E.O. since 1927.

Montini’s state-champion girls basketball team visits Wrigley Field

Montini Catholic High School’s state-champion girls basketball team was recognized before the Chicago Cubs’ May 27 game at Wrigley Field. The Broncos won the 2025 IHSA Class 3A state title on March 8. Montini defeated Saint Ignatius 50-44 in the Class 3A state-championship contest at Illinois State University’s CEFCU Arena in Normal. The Broncos, who completed their 2024-25 season with seven post-season victories, finished their season with an overall record of 27-10.

Broncos win sectional title on their own field Montini knocks off Fenwick and St. Francis in successive days to advance to this week’s super-sectional in Lisle

The Montini Catholic softball team continued its post-season run by claiming an IHSA sectional title on its home field last week.

The Broncos opened the IHSA Class 3A playoffs by winning two games to capture the championship at the DePaul College Prep Regional in Chicago. After beating the Rams of DePaul College Prep 4-0 in the regional final on May 30, Montini advanced to last week’s sectional on its home field.

The Broncos crushed Fenwick 12-3 in a sectional semifinal game in Lombard on Thursday, June 5. One day later, Montini pounded St. Francis 13-2 in a five-inning sectional final.

Montini raised its overall season record to 19-16 with Friday’s victory over St. Francis. With that win, the Broncos advanced to this week’s Class 3A super-sectional battle against St. Laurence. The winner of that contest, which took place at Benedictine University in Lisle on Monday, June 9, moved on to this week’s IHSA Class 3A state semifinals in Peoria. Both Class 3A semifinal games will be played this Friday. The winners of those two games will square off in this Saturday’s Class 3A title game.

The Broncos won the title at their own 14-team sectional by beating the sectional’s top two seeds in successive days. Montini, the sectional’s No. 3 seed, defeated Fenwick, the sectional’s No. 2 seed, in an afternoon battle on June 5. About 24 hours later, the Broncos knocked off St. Francis, the sectional’s No. 1 seed, in Friday’s five-inning contest.

The Montini program, which won IHSA Class 3A state titles in 2016 and 2018, had never won a sectional championship on its home field before Friday’s runaway win over the Spartans of St. Francis. The Spartans entered Friday’s game with a season record of 23-4.

Montini did not face St. Francis during the 2025 regular season. The Broncos did square off against Fenwick in two regular-season meetings.

The Friars won both contests, beating Montini 19-4 on April 11 and outscoring the Broncos 10-5 on May 15.

“We play in the upper division of the GCAC [Girls Catholic Athletic Conference], so we play some really good teams all the time. We know it prepares us for anybody that we’re going to see in the post-season, even though some of them are in our conference. Our conference record does not look too pretty, but we know it prepares us for the post-season.”

Montini’s regular-season opponents in the GCAC Red Division include Fenwick, St. Laurence, Providence Catholic and Loyola Academy. The Broncos posted a 1-11 division record during the 2025 regular season. That record included the two decisive losses to Fenwick.

Montini turned the tables on the Friars in last week’s

sectional semifinal, which was originally scheduled to be played on Wednesday, June 4, but wound up being pushed back one day due to rain.

The Broncos, who played the game as the visiting team because Fenwick was the better seed, scored one run in the top of the first inning. Montini added three more runs in the top of the second inning and picked up two more runs in the top of the third inning. Montini produced two additional runs in the top of the fourth inning to raise its lead to 8-0.

Fenwick scored its first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning to reduce the Broncos’ lead to 8-1. Montini picked up one run in the top of the fifth inning and tacked on three more runs in the top of the sixth inning to boost its lead to 12-1. Fenwick scored two runs in the bottom of the

sixth inning to trim Montini’s lead to nine runs and extend the game to the seventh inning. Neither team scored in the seventh inning.

Montini sophomore Aubry Raffen bashed a three-run home run in the top of the second inning to give her team an early 4-0 lead in the sectional semifinal.

Montini senior Kat Filkowski—the team’s leadoff hitter—went 5-for-5 in last week’s win over Fenwick.

Filkowski drove in two runs and scored three runs. Raffen went 1-for-2 and drove in three runs with her threerun homer, which was her 11th home run of the season.

Freshman Cameron Fox went 4-for-5 and drove in two runs.

Senior Liliana Aumann went 2-for-2 with one RBI. Sophomore Cedona Barrett went 2-for-5 and drove in two runs.

Fox, who pitched complete-game victories in both of last week’s sectional triumphs, allowed three runs and seven hits during seven innings in the circle against the Friars. Fox issued three walks and recorded seven strikeouts in the sectional semifinal.

Immediately after the Broncos beat the Friars, Montini’s coaching staff began to prepare the team for the next day’s matchup against St. Francis. Montini’s coaches told the Broncos that they would have to bring the same energy and intensity to the sectional final that they brought to the sectional semifinal.

For the second straight day of sectional action, Montini played as the visiting team on its home field. For the second straight day, the Broncos

delivered an early offensive eruption to take a sizable lead.

Montini scored four runs in the top of the first inning of Friday’s sectional final. St. Francis scored one run in the bottom of the first inning, but the Broncos piled on six runs in the top of the second inning to extend their lead to 10-1.

Montini added two more runs in the top of the fourth inning and plated one run in the top of the fifth inning. St. Francis scored its second and final run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Fox allowed one earned run and five hits in Friday’s five-inning performance against the Spartans. She didn’t issue any walks, and she rang up six strikeouts.

Sophomore Alex Kalins went 1-for-2 with two RBIs. After cranking out 14 hits in their win over Fenwick in the sectional semifinal, the Broncos laced 17 hits in Friday’s five-inning destruction of St. Francis in the sectional final.

Montini freshman right fielder Danika Lucadello made a running catch to record the final out of the sectional semifinal. Lucadello caught another fly ball to right field to secure the final out of Friday’s sectional final.

After Lucadello made the catch to end Friday’s game, the excited Broncos gathered together on the middle of the field to celebrate their victory.

Moments later, Montini’s three seniors—Aumann, Filkowski and Macias—accepted the sectional’s championship plaque to trigger another boisterous celebration.

“We’ve talked a lot about mentality and the confidence level and trusting in each other,” said Bukovsky after Friday afternoon’s dominant victory over St. Francis. “We’ve really bought in to that mentality, and that’s why we’ve been able to find success in the post-season. We want to attack. We want to be aggressive, and we want to put the pressure on the other team.

We’ve been able to do that in the last couple of games.”

The 2024 National Fitness Hall of Fame (NFHOF) Induction Ceremony & Awards Dinner was held on Sunday, March 10 at the Medinah Shriners Banquet Hall in Addison. The event included a celebration of the NFHOF’s 20th anniversary this year.

The room was packed with visitors, some of whom traveled across the nation to attend this special evening.

It began with Governor JB Pritzker extended a warm virtual welcome to the group.

“As Governor of the state of Illinois, I am pleased to welcome everyone gathered for the 2024 National Fitness Hall of Fame Ceremony,” he said. “I commend the work you have done to help make Illinois a stronger and more enjoyable state. On behalf of the people of Illinois, I offer my best wishes for an enjoyable and memorable occasion.”

NFHOF Founder John Figarelli welcomed the crowd and invited a star-studded line-up to introduce the current year inductees and award winners.

As of Saturday afternoon, the bill drew overall opposition from at least one union, although several others indicated via “witness slips” that they were neutral on the bill.

“These are critical issues to get right for consumers and working families that shouldn’t be forced by a deadline,” Joe Duffy, executive director of the labor-affiliated group Climate Jobs Illinois, said in a statement. “We look forward to continuing conversations over the summer to take the time needed to get it right.”

That program also drew serious concerns from some industrial groups. The Illinois Manufacturers Association worried the rate increases to pay for the battery program would have cost businesses too much.

An estimate from the American Petroleum Institute, who represents businesses that operate refineries, pegged the cost of the program over the next 11 years at about $9 billion.

“My main argument at the macro level is that it’s very expensive for very little return,” Jim Watson, who handles API’s efforts in Illinois, said. “And it does little to address capacity issues.”

An analysis from the Solar Energy Industry Association, a solar trade group, found the savings from a battery storage program would outweigh the costs, saving consumers money in the long run.

A solar industry insider said lawmakers will “stay at the table” to reduce energy prices as federal support is “incredibly unlikely” under the current political climate.

“Unfortunately, Illinois’ spring legislative session ended without a lasting solution to the continued and unprecedented energy cost increases that are taking money out of families’ wallets,” Lesley McCain, head of the Illinois Solar Energy & Storage Association, said in a statement.

“While this was a disappointing conclusion to the session, we have every reason to believe leaders in Springfield remain committed to moving Illinois’ clean energy transi-

tion forward.”

Several other provisions of the bill drew significant attention as the pitch made its rounds in Springfield. One such aspect of the bill would have outlined an “integrated resource plan” process for the Illinois Commerce Commission.

This would have been a major shift at the ICC, giving the regulatory agency more authority over the state’s electric grid and more ability to alter the emissions-reduction goals of the state. Since the passage of CEJA in 2021, the ICC has become a primary enforcer of the state’s climate goals.

But, like other elements of the plan, it faced pushback from business groups. The Manufacturers’ Association was concerned that lawmakers would be ceding too much authority to state regulators.

While the bill contained several other provisions, another major issue on the table was lifting the state’s longstanding moratorium on new nuclear power developments.

Two years ago, the state loosened restrictions, allowing for the development of small nuclear reactors—the type that has only become possible in recent years thanks to technological breakthroughs. Those remain in the early stages of commercial development.

Ending the nuclear moratorium for large nuclear reactors was one of the least controversial issues in the bill. While some environmentalists were opposed, others did not feel strongly about it.

Business groups were broadly in favor of it.

Like other aspects of the bill, it may return in a future legislative session. But for a broader reform package, it’s back to the drawing board.

Environmental and consumer advocates, union organizers, utilities and energy companies all indicated that negotiations would continue into the summer and that there is, broadly, a desire from lawmakers to move forward in some way to lower energy prices raised by data centers’ demand.

But what that could be, and when it might happen, is now up in the air.

“If you kick the can down the road, even a month, things could have pretty significant impact,” Nannicelli said. “We need to make a clear decision: who’s going to pay for these costs of unprecedented load growth that’s coming in large part from data centers?”
